JANUARY 2016

“We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. … Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.” (Misericordiae Vultus 2.)

Please help our mission through your prayers, your personal involvement and your moral and material support. Leave a legacy of goodness after your death. Remember us in your WILL. Talk to your Solicitor or Trustee of how you can include our mission as beneficiary of your estate.

A clause like this will be sufficient: “I give, devise and bequeath to the Missionary Society of St Paul, 477 Royal Parade, Parkville Victoria, the sum of $.......... for the use of the said Society.”

Dear Friends and Benefactors, I do hope you are well and that this year, now coming to an end, has been one marked with encounter and enrichment with the Lord. Once again, on behalf of my Paulist brothers here in Australia and overseas, I wish to thank you for your love and friendship, collaboration in ministry, prayers, financial support and witness of faith. This partnership in mission, here in Australia and beyond, gives us strength and encouragement in our own witness. As you read this, the whole Church is about to begin, or has recently begun, the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, starting on 8 December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. We celebrate God’s Mercy which is greater than sin and our human brokenness. The Holy Year will conclude on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King, when we celebrate the promise that His Mercy will reign supreme. The Year of Mercy has been proclaimed by Pope Francis (cf Misericordiae Vultus) so that, reflecting on God’s Mercy made living and visible in Jesus, we can become “a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives” (MV2). Thus, the motto of the Jubilee Year is “Merciful like the Father” (cf Lk 6:36). This Year has been called so that all members of the Church can live and be witness to God’s mercy in a world often deprived of it.

I was privileged to meet the group in Manila and join them on their retreat where I could see that, once again, it had been both a challenging and enriching experiencefor them and all involved. Some have joined the Young Paulist group centred at St James Parish. They continue to grow in their missionary charism through reflection and action in the local community. At the end of August we were blessed with the arrival of a new member to ourAustralian community. Fr Lonnie Borg has joined us in our ongoing mission to be signs and sources of the Love and mercy of our Lord in our community life and ourdifferent ministries. Fr Lonnie has spent twelve years in our mission in Pakistan, where, as a student, I met him for the first time. He then spent seventeen years in our mission in the Philippines where we shared the first four years. I am glad that we will be working together again. I am sure his many years of experience and his ongoing witness will benefit us all and, in turn, continue to help him in his own growth. In Peru Br Carlos Pacherres was ordained a deacon earlier in April and a priest on 6 November. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, seven pre-novices accompanied by Fr Stephen, from Peru, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam and Malta have gathered as they continue to discern their vocational journey. God-willing, some will take the next step and commence an international Novitiate in Manila early in the new year. They will be accompanied by Fr Martin Galea who was with us for a few weeks in October. I ask you to keep them all in your prayers.

It is in this spirit of rediscovering, embracing and sharing the mercy of God with others in this Jubilee Year, that I present to you our Paulist Missionary Calendar for 2016. Each month has a quote from Pope Francis to encourage our reflection and our living of God’s Mercy. I also encourage you to read and reflect on Misericordiae Vultus (Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy). Together with the Calendar, I would like to share with you some important events of the past year for us Paulists here in Australia and overseas. In January, a second group of young adults, accompanied by Fr Jude and our Mission liaison Sheryn, went to the Philippines for a two-week mission immersion experience, Mission 15, with our MSSP brothers in Manila and our parish in Dinalupihan. Some were blessed with the opportunity to join an estimated six million Philippinos at the Papal Mass during Pope Francis’ visit.

Lastly, on behalf of my Paulist Missionary brothers I pray that you and all your loved ones have a Blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with the experience of His mercy. May it be a source of inspiration in your ongoing mission to share that mercy with all those you may encounter. Your brother in Christ and mission,

Fr Ivano Burdian MSSP Provincial Superior
