MARCH 2018

My experience in working with the MSSP in both Manila and Bataan was one filled with unity, love and support. Even though we were all coming from different parts of the world, there was no division or segregation among us. Everyone wanted to get to know us and our story. ….If I needed to share the pain and tears, they were there. Never once judging me or telling me how to feel and react. The spiritual guidance that they shared with us will not be forgotten. (Mission 13 reflection by Sheryn)

JULY 2018 “Our mission was not long enough to change the world, but it was long enough to form a special bond with the people we worked with – fellow missionaries and locals alike. No amount of money will help the orphan child I spent a morning playing with, but a loving parent will. I did not build a hospital for the youth that we worked with, but I learnt more than I ever could have imagined by journeying with them.” (Mission 13 reflection by Tristan)

NOVEMBER 2018 “The Mission 17 trip opened my eyes to the constant struggle to survive for those living in impoverished conditions. However, I learnt that it is during these struggles that God is most prominent. I learnt that God is present especially in the most bleak of situations – that He is able to bring people together for a common cause. There is hope where we search for it and God is always present in hope.” (Mission 17 reflection by Diana)

Please help our mission through your prayers, your personal involvement and your moral and material support. Leave a legacy of goodness after your death. Remember us in your WILL. Talk to your Solicitor or Trustee of how you can include our mission as beneficiary of your estate.

A clause like this will be sufficient: “I give, devise and bequeath to the Missionary Society of St Paul, 477 Royal Parade, Parkville Victoria, the sum of $.......... for the use of the said Society.”

Dear Friends and Benefactors, I do hope you are well. Once again, on behalf of my Paulist brothers here in Australia and overseas, I wish to thank you for your love and friendship, collaboration in ministry, prayers, witness of faith and financial support. This partnership in mission, here in Australia and beyond, gives us strength and encouragement in our own witness. August 2018 will mark 70 years of our MSSP presence in Australia, working in union with the mission of the local Church. On 3 December 2017, the First Sunday of Advent, the Church in Australia will launch a Year of Youth with the theme “Open new horizons for spreading Joy: Young People, Faith and Vocational Discernment. This will lead up to the Synod of Bishops on Youth to be held in Rome in October 2018. We will be celebrating and reflecting on the significance of ministry to youth and the important part youth have, within the mission of the Church, in making known the joy of the Good News in both word and witness. This was close to our Founder's heart. Joseph De Piro understood the importance not only of nourishing and witnessing to our youth, but also to invite and encourage them in embracing their missionary vocation, which we all share in and through our baptism. Thus throughout the 70 years we have been in mission in Australia, an essential part of our ministry has been to walk with and nourish our youth, be it in our Parishes, Maltese Chaplaincy or the many Youth and Christian leadership groups we have been part of. One recent particular endeavour was the Mission immersion experience with our missionaries in the Philippines, in 2013, 2015 and in 2017. Through these profound experiences, young adults have had the opportunity to enter into their own vulnerability through the experience of the vulnerability of the poor and marginalized in Metro Manila and our Parish in Bataan Province, and so to discover God in their midst. Quite a few of the participants, after returning to Australia, have joined the Young Paulist group based at St James Parish. Here, they continue to grow in awareness of their mission through reflection and action in the local community. Mission 17

It is in this spirit that I present our 2018 MSSP Calendar to you. With this in mind and to assist you on your journey and mission, the monthly quote is both from our recent popes who call the young to embrace their mission as well as a selection of reflections from some of the young people who have been on the Mission immersion experiences. Together with the Calendar, I would like to share with you some important events of the past year for us Paulists here in Australia and overseas. Apart from the Mission-17 group going to the Philippines, accompanied by Fr Jude and Taryn (Young Paulist core leader), in February our Superior General Fr Mark Grima MSSP arrived for his

canonical visit of the members and our mission in Australia. He joined us in March as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of missionary priesthood of Frs Denis Carabott and Tarcisio Micallef. In late May, Fr Mark together with the General Council and the leaders of our Missions in Malta, Philippines, Pakistan, Peru and myself for a leaders' meeting at SPMC in Wantirna South, as part of our preparation for the General Chapter meeting to be held in Peru in mid-2018. In May Brs Alex and Giovann were ordained deacons in Philippines and soon after came to Sydney and Melbourne for two months of experience in our parishes and to meet our community. They returned to Philippines to finish their studies and will be ordained in Malta in May 2018. In June, after many years in mission in Australia, Fr Emmanuel Adami left our community to continue his mission with our community in Malta. He will be missed by many. Also after many years of ministry in Australia, Fr Claude Borg died on June 17th at the age of 91. He was in his 72nd year of Paulist Missionary life and 65th year of priesthood. In all those years he has served in Malta, Melbourne and Sydney. We wish to thank all those who cared for Fr Claude over the years. He will be Fr Emmanuel fondly remembered as an energetic, jovial and caring pastor by all who knew him and whose lives were touched by him. Fr Claude

February was a special month overseas. In the Philippines our 6 novices made their first profession. Our mission in Cuba was officially opened and, in Malta, Fr Alfred Cachia, who had been a part of our mission in Australia for many years, passed away. Lastly, on behalf of my Paulist Missionary brothers, I pray that you and all your loved ones have a Blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with the Joy of our Lord's presence.
