The President’s Message

APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

Dear Mu Lambda Brothers,

As March gracefully transitions into April, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for your unwavering commitment to service and the profound impact you’ve had within our fraternity and community. However, amidst our celebrations, we also mark a somber moment as we bid farewell to one of our notable figures, Brother Arthur King. His presence and contributions to our chapter will be deeply missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

On a brighter note, we also rejoice in the celebration of our Chapter Centurion Brother, Arlester Brown. As he reaches this incredible milestone of 100 years, let us honor his dedication, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to our fraternity. Brother Brown’s legacy serves as a beacon of inspiration for us all, reminding us of the lasting impact we can make when we dedicate ourselves to service and brotherhood.

As we navigate through both moments of sorrow and joy, let us lean on each other for support and strength. Together, we will honor the memory of Brother Arthur King and celebrate the remarkable life of Brother Arlester Brown.

I am also delighted to extend heartfelt congratulations to the brothers of Mu Lambda and Beta Chapter for being recognized and awarded the Charles H. Wesley Award for our joint service efforts. This honor speaks volumes about our collective dedication to empowering the next generation of Alpha men, and it is a testament to the outstanding leadership within our ranks. Special thanks to Brother James Harmon III, Beta Chapter advisor, for his instrumental role in showcasing the impact of our joint service projects at the upcoming Eastern Regional Convention in April.

Looking forward, I am thrilled to see the impact of our Voteless People is a Hopeless People kick-off event with Eric Holder, the first African American Attorney General, at Howard University Law School. This event was both inspiring and enlightening as we continue to advocate for civic engagement and voting rights within our communities.

As a chapter, we are truly making a difference with our programs, initiatives, and events, and I urge each of you to continue your unwavering support. Together, we are not just moving the needle; we are setting the standard for excellence that defines Mu Lambda Chapter.

Stay tuned for more upcoming events tailored for families, young men, and, most importantly, our beloved brothers in Washington D.C. Your continued participation and commitment are what make our chapter truly exceptional.

Fraternally,

Vice President’s Message

APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

Dear Brothers,

I trust you all are enjoying a great start to the spring season. As we navigated through a bustling March and gear up for an eventful April and May, it’s crucial for us to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of life itself. From bidding farewell to our dear Brother Arthur King, to celebrating the centennial year of Brother Arlester Brown, these moments remind us of the preciousness of our time here on Earth and the strength of our brotherhood.

Our calendar is packed with activities for April, beginning with community service to spruce up our house for the Alpha Move next week, followed by the Mu Lambda House/Block Clean-up, and culminating with the March for Babies and the Eastern Region Convention in Philadelphia. These endeavors may seem daunting, but rest assured, we are more than capable of rising to the occasion.

Let’s embrace these opportunities to serve, bond, and make lasting memories together as brothers. Together, we are unstoppable.

Lastly, special thanks to Brother David Gaston for orchestrating and execution of the Adopt the Block Clean-up this past Saturday. We had such a great turnout that the work time was cut in half.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

ROUNDING THIRD BASE FOR OUR FRATERNAL YEAR

Picture, if you will, the streets of Washington DC awash in the ethereal hues of cherry blossoms, casting a spellbinding spectacle upon our beloved city. These once-per-year blossoms, with their delicate petals, serve as a poignant reminder of the fleeting beauty and preciousness of life itself.

Dear Esteemed Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter,

As we find ourselves amidst the vibrant blossoms and rejuvenating energy of spring, I extend warm greetings to each and every one of you. I trust that you are all relishing the joy of this transformative season, for it is a time of renewal, growth, and infinite possibilities.

March has bid us farewell, leaving behind a trail of bustling activity and momentous occasions

that have set the stage for the spectacular journey ahead. But before we charge headlong into the adventures that await us in April and beyond, let us pause for a moment to reflect on the magnificent list of events that have unfolded.

Mu Lambda Chapter has been a beacon of light and inspiration, igniting the flames of progress and transformation in our community. Throughout March, we embarked on a series of impactful endeavors that have reverberated far and wide, leaving an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of witnessing our efforts.

From hosting the esteemed First African American Attorney General, Eric Holder, for a virtual seminar at Howard Law School, to conducting a DC Voter Registration Seminar that ignited a flame of political activism in our communities, we have sprung into action with unwavering determination and fervor.

But our journey does not end here, dear brothers. Oh no, it is merely the beginning of an odyssey that promises to push the boundaries of what we once deemed possible. As we march boldly into April, our calendar brims with a plethora of activities designed to uplift, inspire, and empower.

We shall kick off the month with our Alpha Move community upliftment event on April 13th where we immerse ourselves in health focused activities. We invite you to bring your friends, family and other brothers to participate. Following closely on its heels is the Mu Lambda

House/Block Clean-up, where we shall endeavor to beautify our surroundings and leave a lasting legacy of love and care on Alpha Phi Alpha Way!

But perhaps the pièce de résistance of our April agenda lies in the March for Babies and the Eastern Region Convention in Philadelphia. These monumental events serve as a testament to our unwavering commitment to service, brotherhood, and excellence.

It is in times like these, dear brothers, that the true essence of Mu Lambda Chapter shines brightest. We are not merely a fraternity; we are a force to be reckoned with, a beacon of hope and inspiration in a world fraught with uncertainty and chaos.

So let us march forward, dear brothers, with heads held high and hearts ablaze with passion and purpose. Let us seize the opportunities that lie before us and embrace the challenges that

dare to stand in our way. For together, united as one, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

As we continue to navigate the exhilarating journey that lies ahead, let us remember the words of Shakespeare, who once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Let us be the architects of our own destiny, forging a path of greatness that will echo through the annals of time.

The event, held in the historic Moot Courtroom of Charles Hamilton Houston Hall, featured a riveting panel discussion led by none other than the First U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder.

A PIECE OF 60 YEAR OLD MU LAMBDA HISTORY

Our Legacy Preserved!

60 Years ago... Imagine being handed a black die-cut or hand cut black Alpha Phi Alpha Shaped document with a crown on the top.... How much time did it take for brothers to sit and meticulously make these mystery pamphlets...... Imagine, you are fortunate enough to recieve one! Yes, you eagerly pry it open to notice that this is an invitaion!.... Fit for a king perhaps.

Imagine in the height of the civil rights movement, National Guard troops with upthrust bayonets surround integrationists

kneeling in prayer as approximately 100 made a peaceful attempt to challenge the no-demonstration edict of the military commander in Cambridge, Maryland on May 13, 1964. Yet the 25th President of Mu Lambda Elgy Johnson stands firmly before our chapter, encouraging brothers to invite their wives, friends, and associates to join us for an Annual Spring Dance! To normalize, to feel like the kings and queens we are!

Imagine on a Thursday Night, yes a school night, in the nation’s capitol on the beautiful Spring Evening of May 21st, 1964, the Sheraton Hotel was abuzz with Black Ties, fancy hats, drinks, food and music. 1 am, probably came “too soon”.

10 years ago, I had the pleasure of engaging monthly with Brother Julius H. Brice, Chair of this event. I imagine, he would want us to revive events with this mystique and grandieur. I imagine it would bring a smile.

I imagine that his legacy will live on! I shall continue to preserve this legacy, for Elgy. But most importantly for Bro. Brice!

DECOR FOR MEN

Decorating For Men: Creating A “ManFriendly” Space

When you begin thinking about decorating, usually a man-friendly space is not what springs to mind. The décor of a space popular with men is usually a large screen television and sports paraphernalia, and while this may seem to be the limit of their creativity, there are a lot of other options for creating a space that will appeal to a more masculine taste. Here are a few tips for creating a space in which any man will feel at home!

Define A Function

The most important element of any space for a man is whether or not it will serve his needs. Whether it's an office or living room, understanding how they want to use the space, and including all the elements that they will need to function in that space, is essential.

Choose Warmer And Darker Colors

While light, airy colors can give a room a nice appeal, often men are drawn to darker,

Select Durable Fabrics And Upholsteries

Fabric choices for window treatments and furnishings should reflect the function of the space and be durable. Choices like leather, micro-suede, and corduroy are all great choices because they look masculine and can withstand whatever your man will put them through.

Think Big

Furnishings for any space that is designed for a man should have large, bold pieces, whether it is furniture or accent items. Also think functional. Men prefer a sofa they can lie stretched out on, a recliner rather than a dainty chair, and entertainment units in which they can store all their high-tech gadgets.

Ask For Input!

While most men don’t get excited about redecorating, if you are designing a space that is especially for your man, or even just want make your shared spaces more manfriendly, asking them what they want is the easiest way to make sure that all your money and effort will not go to waste.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.

The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.

The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?

As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.

Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitivebehaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today. Autism is a spectrum disorder with many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently. Signs of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.

Brother Henry L. Dickason, 5th General President

April is widely recognized as synonymous with the arrival of spring, a season marked by renewal, rejuvenation, and the promise of warmer days ahead. As nature awakens from its wintry slumber, April unfolds with a vibrant display of blooming flowers, budding trees, and the melodious songs of birds returning from their winter migrations. The air becomes infused with the sweet scent of freshly cut grass and the earthy aroma of rain showers, breathing life into the surroundings. With each passing day, the sunlight lingers a little longer, casting a golden hue upon the awakening landscape. April encapsulates the essence of transformation and growth, inviting us to embrace the beauty of change and the endless possibilities that come with the turning of the seasons.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Mu Lambda Chapter

2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
