The President’s Message
MARCH 2024 MESSAGE
Dear Mu Lambda Brothers,
As we bid farewell to Black History Month, and welcome Women’s History Month, I am compelled to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering dedication to service and the profound impact you have made within our fraternity and community. Throughout February, we honored the legacies of remarkable individuals, both past and present, who have paved the way for generations to come.
From our esteemed former Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall to the visionary Brother Charles Hamilton Houston, the late Mayor Marion Barry, and our very own Brother and Ambassador Horace G. Dawson, alongside Brother Sean Plater, GM of WHUR FM and WHUT Howard University Television, we celebrated the contributions of these trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on history.
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Brother Marcus Spells, Chair of our Health and Wellness Committee, for his outstanding leadership in organizing the Brothers Only Mental Health Conversation in February. This program provided a vital space for over 40 brothers from around the world to come together, share experiences, and support one another—an invaluable initiative that underscores the importance of mental health within our fraternity.
Additionally, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the brothers of Beta Chapter as we supported them in hosting their 30th annual Brother to Brother Youth Conference in February. Your dedication to empowering the next generation is truly commendable, and it is an honor to stand in solidarity with you in this impactful endeavor.
Looking ahead into the month of March, I am thrilled to announce our upcoming Voteless People is a Hopeless People kick-off event with Eric Holder, the first African American Attorney General, at Howard University Law School. This event promises to be an inspiring and enlightening occasion as we continue to champion the importance of civic engagement and voting rights.
As a chapter, we are truly moving the needle with our programs, initiatives, and events, and I encourage each and every one of you to continue your steadfast support. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of others and upholding the legacy of excellence that defines Mu Lambda Chapter.
Stay tuned for more upcoming events tailored for families, young men, and, most importantly, our beloved brothers in Washington D.C. Your continued participation and commitment are what make our chapter truly exceptional.
Fraternally,

MARCH 2024 MESSAGE
As we gather here in March, it’s undeniable that time seems to be sprinting by. With each passing day, we witness the relentless battle between winter and spring, eagerly awaiting the moment when spring emerges victorious. Let’s hope for a swift TKO in favor of spring’s warmth and vitality.
I’m thrilled to share some exciting updates for the coming months. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
CELEBRATING OUR QUEENS - HERSTORY
As we embark on Women’s History Month, it is not merely a time to reflect on the achievements of extraordinary women, but also an opportunity to celebrate the indomitable spirit and resilience that have propelled them forward in the face of adversity. In the March 2024 edition of the Mu Lambda Torch, we proudly showcase a constellation of luminaries whose stories serve as testament to the
transformative power of courage, determination, and perseverance.
Gracing the cover of this special edition are trailblazers who have not only shattered glass ceilings but have also paved the way for future generations of women to dream big and soar to new heights. At the forefront stands Vice President Kamala Harris, a symbol of hope and possibility for women of all backgrounds. Born to immigrant parents of Indian and Jamaican descent, Vice President Harris’s journey from Howard University to the highest echelons of American politics is a testament to the limitless potential of the human spirit. Her historic ascent to the second highest office in the United States Executive branch serves as an inspiration to countless young women across the nation, reaffirming their belief in the power of perseverance and the importance of representation at the highest levels of government.
MU LAMBDA TORCH 2024 | 6 ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC, MU LAMBDA CHAPTER
Joining Vice President Harris are icons whose contributions to society have left an indelible mark on history. Oprah Winfrey, the media mogul and philanthropist, has not only revolutionized the entertainment industry but has also used her platform to advocate for social justice and empowerment. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, with her grace, intellect, and unwavering commitment to public service, continues to inspire millions around the globe to lead with compassion and empathy. Allyson Felix, the highly decorated track and field athlete and former Olympian, has not only dominated the world stage with her athletic prowess but has also emerged as a fierce advocate for gender equality in sports. Mae Jemison, the pioneering NASA astronaut, shattered barriers as the first African American woman to travel in space, paving the way for future generations of women in STEM fields. And Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whose journey from a refugee camp to the United States Congress embodies the resilience and strength of the human spirit, continues to champion the rights of marginalized communities and amplify their voices on the national stage.
In a year marked by both triumphs and challenges, it is imperative that we honor the contributions of women who have defied expectations, challenged the status quo, and made invaluable contributions to society. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us not only reflect on the achievements of these trailblazing leaders but also reaffirm our commitment to advancing gender equity and empowering women from all walks of life. In the face of ongoing battles to protect reproductive rights, ensure gender parity, and dismantle systemic barriers, let us stand together as allies and advocates for our women, our queens, and continue to pave the way for a more just and inclusive society.
Here’s to the women who continue to inspire us with their resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for all. May their legacies serve as guiding lights for generations to come, illuminating the path toward a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and succeed on her own terms.

As Mu Lambda Chapter continues to forge connections and partnerships with undergraduate brothers at Howard University, we look forward to more collaborative efforts aimed at the betterment and empowerment of men. Through mentorship, guidance, and shared experiences, we strive to nurture the next generation of leaders and instill in them the values of brotherhood, service, and excellence that define our fraternity.

ENHANCING HOME SECURITY
Ensuring the security of your home is a vital aspect of safeguarding your cherished belongings and, more importantly, protecting the well-being of your loved ones. Here are some proactive measures you can take to fortify your home security:
1. Secure Your Entrances
Make it a habit to always lock your windows and doors. In today’s world, leaving entry points unlocked is no longer a safe practice. Prioritize checking locks regularly to ensure they’re functioning effectively, providing an added layer of protection for your family and property.
2. Limit Access Points
Embrace the habit of securing all windows and doors consistently. In today’s world, ensuring every entryway is locked isn’t just a precaution; it’s a necessity. Regularly verify the integrity of locks to fortify your family’s safety and safeguard your home from potential threats.
3. Illuminate Your Surroundings
illumination is essential for deterring potential intruders and maintaining a secure environment.
4. Maintain & Clean Your Yard
Keep your yard free of clutter by storing gardening and lawn tools in locked storage spaces. By eliminating potential tools that could be used for intrusion, you can effectively deter unauthorized access and bolster the security of your home.
5. Tailor Security Solutions
Invest in a personalized home security system or customize existing measures to suit your needs. Whether installing new equipment or updating access codes, prioritize confidentiality and vigilance to uphold the integrity of your home’s defenses.
6. Prune for Perspective
Maintain clear sightlines by trimming overgrown foliage and shrubbery. Unobstructed views enable swift assessment of external activity, empowering informed decisions and enhancing overall vigilance.
By proactively implementing these measures, you can enhance the security of your home, providing peace of mind and ensuring the safety and well-being of those you hold dear.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA
Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

BLEEDING DISORDER AWARENESS

Symptoms of a disorder may include:
• Frequent or prolonged bleeding
• Excessive bruising

• Extended bleeding after minor cuts, blood draws or vaccinations, minor surgery, or dental procedures
COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer type worldwide. It is the second most common cause of cancer death, leading to almost 1 million deaths per year. Colorectal cancer is a disease of the colon or rectum, which are parts of the digestive system. Unlike most cancers, colorectal cancer is often preventable (90% of the time) with screening and highly treatable when detected early. Most cases of colorectal cancer occur in people ages 45 and older, but the disease is increasingly affecting younger people. Each year, about 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with this disease and more than 50,000 die.
Colorectal cancer often develops without symptoms. When they occur, symptoms may include:
• Blood in or on stool
• Persistent unusual bowel movements like constipation or diarrhea
• Stomach pain, aches, or cramps that don’t go away
• Losing weight for no reason

Let’s also recognize the Jewels who laid the foundation for our fraternity, embodying unity and progress. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
Alpha is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
