TWO JEWELS & TWENTY MEN OF ALPHA OUR CHAPTER

Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

FIRST OFFICERS

The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold Stratton-President, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor Daly-Secretary, Brother Daniel W. Edmonds-Treasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,

Welcome to the new Brothers who have entered the House of Alpha through the Mu Lambda Chapter. As representatives of the Fraternity as a whole and the Mu Lambda Chapter specifically I am confident you all will hold that banner high and adhere to our customs and ideals. Congratulations are in order to you non-Neophyte Mu Lambda Brothers on your successful execution of IMDP. As it is often said it takes quite a bit of personal initiative and drive to actively participate in IMDP once you are already a Brother. But we all know that a new line does not make itself. So now what, what is next? For the neophytes holding yourselves accountable to those ideals and rationale for wanting to be a Brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and you all have done that already. Coming out the gate already volunteering and engaging in our existing programs and events. Actively interested in getting to know Brothers beyond your sponsor and recommender. Bravo! To all my Brothers in Mu Lambda we are about to enter into some exciting times - we are about to have our first in person/virtual Chapter meeting in over two years, Alpha Phi Alpha Way is a reality with the street name ceremony to be conducted within several weeks, golf tournament later this year, preparations for our centennial celebration well under way, collaborations and events with our area Alpha chapters and other D9 organizations, active in person community service projects, in person interaction with our youth, expansion of the Henry Arthur Callis Academy to an additional school in the district, renovations to the Mu Lambda Foundation House,…. And nothing is possible without your active participation and dedication to Our Dear Fraternity. Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message Spring is here!

It is with great pride that I welcome the ten new initiates of the Spring 22 Mu Lambda Iine to the HOUSE OF ALPHA! March saw us bring in these assets successfully into our ranks and over the last few intake cycles, Brother Lucas has managed a process to usher extremely noble men to join the ranks of our Mighty chapter. These men are hard workers, tenacious spirits and a true force of brothers who are geared and ready to help the causes of our mission. In the essence of creating Mu Lambda traditions, the chapter’s first event since covid celebrated on the 1st of April was one built to welcome these new brothers to the networks we are building in Washington DC. This “Happy Hour” event that was birthed from an idea I had in the midst of our 2022 IMDP and I am happy to witness that Brother Bruce and the social committee put in diligently work to host at our house. This event was reminiscent of years past. A true reflection of the power of our chapter. The laughter, the pictures, the guests, the food and drinks was a pleasure to see produced. Last month was extremely active in the world of Alpha & Mu Lambda. The MAAC celebrated their 30th Anniversary in Dover Delaware with remarks from our General President and a celebration fit for kings. It was well attended by the brothers of Mu Lambda including our neophytes. At this event, we celebrated that Beta Chapter continues to lead the district academically and also have won the chapter of the year. As our chapter continues to guide these younger brothers toward a future of excellence, I want to encourage our chapter to lead in all aspects of our Alpha. We need to continue to lead in the MAAC, showcase our leadership in the Eastern Region, and mark our leadership in the work places and beyond. As we look into the future I would like to continue to encourage our brothers to step up to the plate of leadership here at Mu Lambda. Representing our chapter in all facets of our operation. This is an integral secondary function of our services. The excitement of intake cannot overshadow the importance of our duties. We have to maintain our chapter, our house, our programs and the communities we serve. Our activities are dependent on YOU. Lets us continue the work of Alpha in the spirit and power of Mu Lambda. Happy April brothers, Happy Spring. Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler speaks out after being mistakenly suspected of attempted robbery By Chloe Melas and Tina Burnside, CNN Updated 10:35 AM ET, Thu March 10, 2022 Source: https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/09/entertainment/ ryan-coogler-arrested-bank-robbery-mistaken/index.html

He was released shortly after they verified his identity, the police report states. “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on,” Coogler said in a statement to Variety. CNN has reached out to Coogler’s representative for comment. Director Ryan Coogler at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. (CNN)Ryan Coogler was detained by police in January after being mistaken for a bank robber. The “Black Panther” director was in Atlanta, attempting to make a withdrawal from his account with Bank of America. The teller received an alert on his account, according to the police report obtained by CNN, because the amount was more than $10,000. The teller notified her superior that she thought Coogler was trying to rob the bank and 911 was called. Coogler had written a note on the back of his withdrawal slip stating that he wanted the money to be counted discreetly, given the amount, according to the report. When police arrived, two of Coogler’s colleagues, who were waiting for him in a parked vehicle outside the bank, were detained and placed in the back of a police car. Coogler was placed in handcuffs while police investigated the call.

“We deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler,” Bank of America said in a statement to CNN. Coogler was in Georgia at the time of the incident, working on production of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to his 2018 blockbuster. The film is set for release in November. Message from the Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC) Health and Wellness Committee Mu Lambda Brothers,

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, National Autism Month, and Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Below are some articles of interest addressing these topics. Please click on the links or cut and paste into your browser to read the entire articles.

Health and Wellness Focus on African Americans Alcohol and Drug Abuse Among African Americans

The U.S. Bureau of the Census estimates that there are 44 million people of African origin living in the country, comprising 13.4% of the total population.1 African Americans are overrepresented among drug abusers in the United States, but they are also more likely to seek treatment for their drug addiction.

Unfortunately, studies show that this population experiences less favorable outcomes upon the completion of substance abuse treatment. Here we will discuss the statistics of substance abuse among African Americans and explore treatment options and outcomes. Substance Abuse Among African Americans The rates of substance abuse among African Americans are similar to those of the general

population, although there are some slight differences. Findings from the 2018 National Survey

on Drug Use and Health include:2 • 6.9% of African Americans have a substance use disorder compared to a rate of 7.4% among the total population. • 3.4% of African Americans have an illicit drug use disorder compared to a rate of 3% among the total population. • Past month illicit drug use among African Americans (13.7%) is more than Caucasians (12%) and Hispanics (9.7%). • Past month marijuana use among African Americans (12.2%) is higher than the general population (10.1%). • African Americans report lower lifetime use of cocaine (8.5%) compared to Caucasians (17.6%) and Hispanics (11.1%). • Alcohol use disorders are less common among African Americans (4.5%) than the total population (5.4%). • Binge drinking among African Americans (23%) is slightly less common than in Hispanics (24.6%) and Caucasians (25.7%). • The rate of heavy drinking among African Americans (4.3%) is much less than the general population (6.1%) and Caucasians (7.2%). African American children with autism experience long delays in diagnosis Diagnosing autism in children as early as possible is essential to improving their language, social and cognitive skills. But often the diagnosis is made relatively late — even after some children begin elementary school. In the United States, diagnostic delays and barriers in access to developmental therapy for those with autism are particularly pronounced among children from minority groups. A new study led by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis highlights the nature of those obstacles and the high stakes of health disparity for African American children affected by autism spectrum disorder, who typically face longer delays in diagnosis than white children. Although it’s now possible to diagnose autism in children before age 2, most kids are 4 or older when they receive a diagnosis. In this study involving 584 African American children at four autism centers across the United States, the average African American child already was almost 5½ years old at the time of diagnosis, despite the fact parents first had expressed concerns about their kids’ development more than three years earlier. Nationally, white children are diagnosed an average of six months earlier than African American children. children-with-autism-experience-long-delays-in-diagnosis/ 10 Mouth Cancer Symptoms

The term cancer refers to the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in one part of the body, that can end up damaging other cells of surrounding tissues and organs. Mouth cancer is any cancer that affects the oral cavity and other tissues within it. It includes cancers of the mouth itself, the tongue, the gums, the lips, cheeks, palates, and the pharynx. Close to 50,000 cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed in the United States annually. It is more common in people older than 40 years with two-thirds of the cases occurring in men compared to women. Studies indicate that most oral cancer cases result from the use of tobacco and alcohol, and due to infection with human papilloma virus, also referred to as HPV. The following are mouth cancer symptoms, some of which may also be present in other conditions.

Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC) Symptom #1: Ulcer That Does Not Heal An ulcer that occurs anywhere within the mouth and does not easily heal may be a sign of oral cancer. This is a common mouth cancer symptom that is present in about 8 of every 10 cases. While other mouth diseases may also be accompanied with oral sores, these tend to heal rapidly with proper treatment. However, mouth sores associated with mouth cancer remain unhealed for more than three weeks. Another differentiating factor is that while non-cancerous sores are normally soft and do not usually bleed, cancerous sores are hard, red, thick and will usually bleed. Symptom #2: White Patches Sometimes, white patches on the tongue, gums, floor or roof of the mouth, the inside surface of the cheeks or any other parts of the mouth can be considered premalignant lesions of oral cancer. The condition, known as leukoplakia is usually caused by smoking or other irritants. The thick, flat, white patches are normally painless, and can’t be scrapped off. Other premalignant lesions can be red (erythroplakia), red and white (erythroleukoplakia), or verrucous (verrucous leukoplakia). However, not all cases of leukoplakia transform into cancer. Message from the Brother’s Keeper Committee Nothing helps us build our perspective more than developing compassion for others. Compassion involves two things: intention and action. Intention simply means you remember to open your heart to others. Action is simply what you do about it. You might donate time on a regular basis to a cause near to your heart. It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed in the chaos, responsibilities and goals of life. Once overwhelmed, it’s tempting to forget about those brothers most near and dear to us. Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brothers, their spouses, and widows who are retired, are elders, have

disabilities and are ailing. Upon identification of need, the Brother’s Keeper Program also provides assistance to mature and ailing members of its communities. Limitations caused by advanced age place demands on family members, caregivers, and the larger community to ensure that elders remain independently functional. The goal of the Brother’s Keeper Program is to promote dignity and independence among Alpha family and community members who need help in keeping their lives and homes functional. There are seven objectives to the program: • • • • • • •

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land! And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!

WILL SMITH DID A BAD, BAD THING Slapping Chris Rock was also a blow to men, women, the entertainment industry, and the Black community. Kareem Abdul Jabbar on Will Smith. Interesting: "Some have romanticized Smith’s actions as that of a loving husband defending his wife. Comedian Tiffany Haddish, who starred in the movie Girls Trip with Pinkett Smith, praised Smith’s actions: “[F]or me, it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives.”

Actually, it was the opposite. Smith’s slap was also a slap to women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, Smith’s intervention would have been welcome. Or if he’d remained in his seat and yelled his post-slap threat, that would have been unnecessary, but understandable. But by hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself—against words. From everything I’d seen of Pinkett Smith over the years, she’s a very capable, tough, smart woman who can single-handedly take on a lame joke at the Academy Awards show. This patronizing, paternal attitude infantilizes women and reduces them to helpless damsels needing a Big Strong Man to defend their honor least they swoon from the vapors. If he was really doing it for his wife, and not his own need to prove himself, he might have thought about the negative attention this brought on them, much harsher than the benign joke. That would have been truly defending and respecting her. This “women need men to defend them” is the same justification currently being proclaimed by conservatives passing laws to restrict abortion and the LGBTQ+ community. continued on the next page

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Worse than the slap was Smith’s tearful, self-serving acceptance speech in which he rambled on about all the women in the movie King Richard that he’s protected. Those who protect don’t brag about it in front of 15 million people. They just do it and shut up. You don’t do it as a movie promotion claiming how you’re like the character you just won an award portraying. But, of course, the speech was about justifying his violence. Apparently, so many people need Smith’s protection that occasionally it gets too much and someone needs to be smacked. What is the legacy of Smith’s violence? He’s brought back the Toxic Bro ideal of embracing Kobra Kai teachings of “might makes right” and “talk is for losers.” Let’s not forget that this macho John Wayne philosophy was expressed in two movies in which Wayne spanked grown women to teach them a lesson. Young boys—especially Black boys— watching their movie idol not just hit another man over a joke, but then justify it as him being a superhero-like protector, are now much more prone to follow in his childish footsteps. Perhaps the saddest confirmation of this is the tweet from Smith’s child Jaden: “And That’s How We Do It.” The Black community also takes a direct hit from Smith. One of the main talking points from those supporting the systemic racism in America is characterizing Blacks as more prone to violence and less able to control their emotions. Smith just gave comfort to the enemy by providing them with the perfect optics they were dreaming of. Many will be reinvigorated to continue their campaign to marginalize African Americans and others through voter suppression campaign. As for the damage to show business, Smith’s violence is an implied threat to all comedians who now have to worry that an edgy or insulting joke might be met with violence. Good thing Don Rickles, Bill Burr, or Ricky Gervais weren’t there. As comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted: “Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy

clubs and theaters.” The one bright note is that Chris Rock, clearly stunned, managed to handle the moment with grace and maturity. If only Smith’s acceptance speech had shown similar grace and maturity—and included, instead of self-aggrandizing excuses, a heartfelt apology to Rock. ~ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Sources:

STICKY PINEAPPLE CHICKEN Link: https://www.cookingprofessionally.com/post/sticky_pineapple_chicken

The first thing you notice with Sticky Pineapple Chicken is the sauce. This lick-your-fingers, lick-your-plateclean sauce is tangy and sweet, with wonderfully tropical notes of pineapple throughout. Once it coats the juicy, savory chicken, you have a match made in heaven, especially when served over a cloud of rice. Since it only takes 30 minutes to make, Sticky Pineapple Chicken completely upends the weeknight dinner routine in the most delicious way! This is one recipe you’ll want to stick by! INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup pineapple juice • 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce • 1/3 cup low-sodium chicken stock • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 8 chicken

thighs, boneless, skinless, and cut into 1-inch cubes • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste • 1 cup pineapple, diced • 1/2 cup cashews, optional, roasted, and salted • rice, optional, cooked, to taste, for serving DIRECTIONS • Step 1 - In a medium saucepan, whisk together the pineapple juice, soy sauce, chicken stock, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and cornstarch. • Step 2 - Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. • Step 3 - Cook the mixture until it has reduced to about 1 cup and has a thick, syrup-like consistency, about 5-7 minutes. Set the sauce aside. • Step 4 - Add the olive oil to a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.

• Step 5 - Once the oil is shimmering, add the chicken. • Step 6 - Season the chicken with salt and pepper. • Step 7 - Cook the chicken, stirring constantly until it is no longer pink and is cooked through, for about 5 minutes. If you are using a meat thermometer, the temperature should read 165 degrees F when inserted into the thickest section of the meat. • Step 8 - Drain off any liquids from the skillet. • Step 9 - Add the sauce to the pan and stir to combine. • Step 10 - Add the pineapple and cashews and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. • Step 11 - Serve atop the rice. COCONUT RUM CAKE

INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup pecans, chopped • ½ cup sweetened flaked coconut, toasted • 1 (15.25 ounce) package butter cake mix • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant coconut cream pudding mix • 4 large eggs • ½ cup coconut-flavored rum (such as Malibu®) • ½ cup coconut milk beverage (such as Silk®) • ½ cup coconut oil, melted • 1 teaspoon coconut extract Glaze: ½ cup ½ cup ½ cup ½ cup ¼ cup

butter coconut-flavored rum white sugar brown sugar water

DIRECTIONS: • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray a fluted tube pan (such as Bundt®) with cooking spray.

• •

Stir pecans and coconut together. Spread evenly in the prepared Bundt® pan Combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, rum, coconut milk, coconut oil, and coconut extract in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer for 3 minutes, or until well incorporated, about 3 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 45 to 55 minutes. Set on a wire rack until completely cooled, about 30 minutes. Run a table knife around the edges of pan to loosen cake. Invert carefully onto a serving plate. While cake is cooling make glaze. Combine butter, rum, sugar, brown sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes. Using a skewer, poke holes throughout cake. Carefully spoon glaze over cake.

PURPLE PEOPLE EATER COCKTAIL

A tasty (and creepy!) cocktail that gets its purple hue from blue curacao, grenadine, and cranberry juice. A perfectly purple cocktail for any party!

• Vodka – Any non-flavored type or brand will do. • Blue Curacao – A sweet liquor with a blue hue. Flavored from the dried peel of bitter oranges. • Cranberry Juice – This helps add some fruity flavor to the drink as well as some strong coloring. • Sweet and Sour Mix – A standard in many mixed drinks, this adds some sweetness with a dash of tartness. • Grenadine – Another mixed drink favorite, this helps smooth out the flavor while also adding a strong dose of red coloring. Also helps sub some of the tartness of the cranberry juice. • • • • •

1.5 oz vodka 1 oz blue curacao 1 oz sweet and sour mix 1 oz grenadine 1 oz cranberry juice or grape juice

• This recipe calls for cranberry juice, and if you use it, the drink may turn out a tad more maroon than purple. If you’re okay with sacrificing a bit of the intended taste for a better color, you can either substitute cranberry juice with cran-grape juice or grape juice OR double the amount of blue curacao used. Make a test drink first to be sure you still like the taste with these adjustments! • Like the mason jar cocktail shaker used in the recipe video? You can get a near identical one here: Mason Jar and Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker Set. And if you already have a ton of mason jars and just need a cocktail shaker lid, you can pick one up here: Mason Jar Cocktail Shaker Lid. • Or maybe you like the glasses it’s served in? You can get a similar set here: Stemmed Beer Glasses. • And don’t forget the black and white striped straws! Brother Kenneth Williams MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancer-free. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
