Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers, Happy Founder’s Day!!

While we celebrate the 115th founding year of our dear fraternity on December 4th, this time of celebration is also a great time for reflection on the year that has just passed and anticipation and preparation for the next year to come. As the year 2021 comes to a close I think collectively we have had a good year despite of challenges we faced and overcame as members of the overall society. We remain engaged and recognized for the works we do and Brotherhood we exhibit in a real way. Our number of financial active Brothers has increased by 32% and have reclaimed and continue to reclaim Brothers exceeding the goals we have set for ourselves. This is all owed to you Brothers being examples in our communities and being examples to our fellow Brothers. Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Vice President’s Message Giving Thanks, A gratuitous deed that is expressed in a variant of ways. This kind gesture can be expressed through gifts, a card, or a message that lets a person know how grateful you are for an act or service that has passed or is yet to come. For most of us, we were blessed with the good fortune of families, warm meals and memories over the Thanksgiving break of 2021. For some, these conveniences were more modest as we regained trust in normalcy hosting smaller gatherings, and preparing knightlike spreads and reminiscing on the two years of Covid Past whilst Dallas fought valiantly in their prime-time NFL defeat. During this weekend, I had time to reflect on some of the things the last 8 years of Alpha has given to me & that I should be thankful about, so id like to share as we move quickly toward 115 years since our founding. For those who have not had the pleasure of meeting me in person, I’d start from the beginning. I came into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, through this, the MAGNIFICENT 111th House - Mu Lambda. In a time of Crab Feasts and Beautillions, On the heels of the late Brother Brice holding memoirs of his journeys in the brotherhood, where Brother Miller handled our hospitality and Christmas was met with parties. Yes, for this time and those experiences I am thankful. I eagerly jumped to service and in the 8 years of dedication to this chapter I have not fallen off of the executive board. Having served as the Social Chair, Editor of the Torch, Corresponding and Recording Secretary, Archivist, and now working through a second full term as the chapter’s Vice President - I am grateful for the lessons in leadership, the experiences I have gained in timemanagement, intrapersonal people skills and all of the brotherhood bonds that I have made as I continue to grow along this journey as an Alpha Man in the nation’s capital. In 8 years I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the ebbs and flows of every brother in the chapter and I am ever eager to learn more about each member as we build a better bond of brotherhood. I also want to encourage through my actions similar service to moving our chapter forward.

December is usually a perfect time for REDEDICATION. and I always enjoy welcoming reclaimed brothers to this fold as we continue to build our chapter into the strongest force in the fraternity. To the newest members of Mu Lambda, do know that I am appreciative of your willingness to dedicate yourself to the alignment of our chapter’s service. Please continue to push the brand of Mu Lambda’s excellence HIGH as we move toward our own future milestone centennial. I am looking forward to the thanksgiving-like festivities for 2023 and hope to see the best of our chapter in the upcoming years. Solemnly, Upon the passing of both Chadwick Boseman and most recently, artist Virgil Abloh, I would like to express thanks to all of the brothers in the chapter for always keeping small things like our health panel discussions and expressing interest in both our physical and mental health alive through the torch. Brother Butts continues to play an integral role in our chapter and I would be remiss if I didn’t express my gratitude for his efforts. I would assume that the two fallen artist’s choice in privacy for their ailment was to their own personal benefit, but in Mu Lambda, I am grateful that we have made safe spaces for conversations and education around topics like prostate cancer, and other illnesses - I continue to encourage support around black male health as a chapter, we have the power to champion more public discussions, events and screening opportunities to become the beacon of light in our community around the things that affect us the most. Let us raise our glasses and give thanks! Because together we aspire to the Magnificence of Mu Lambda.... and together, WE WILL ACHIEVE IT! To 115.... Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Project Give Back November 20, 2021

Spearheaded by Brother Samuel Armstrong here are highlights of our November's community service event as we supported Project Give Back for a second year. Brothers met at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD to pack food baskets/ boxes that was disturbed to needy families. Over the last 26 years Project Give Back has been making a difference in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. They are committed to helping low-income constituents and those who have fallen on hard times.

Brother Justin Hansford ML SP21 will join the “Race and Justice in America: From Ahmaud Arbery to Kyle Rittenhouse” panel disccussion. My Brothers, I email to invite you to a few upcoming web events and ask you to share the details with brothers in your chapter. Below is an invitation to a webinar several brothers and I are hosting on racial justice in America. Second, on December 6, at 8:00 p.m. EST, I will co-host a virtual meet and greet for former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice and Alpha Kappa Alpha sister, Cheri Beasley, for her bid for the United States Senate. This event will be shared with all 120,000 D9 members on my email list. Third, on December 11, at 2:00 p.m. EST, I will co-host a webinar on the parameters around 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(7) entities and their implications for Alpha. There will be some of Alpha's national leadership as panelists. Expect details for the latter two events sometime next week. Race and Justice in America: From Ahmaud Arbery to Kyle Rittenhouse Monday, 11/29/21, 7:00 p.m. EST In 1903, in his book, The Souls of Black Folks, Brother W.E.B. DuBois stated, "The problem of the Twentieth

Century is the problem of the color-line." Almost 30 years ago, in his book, Faces At The Bottom Of The Well, the founding father of Critical Race Theory--Derrick Bell-underscored that racism is a permanent fixture in American life. Together, their assessments suggest that the problem of the TwentyFirst Century is the problem of white supremacy--its virulence, persistence, and ubiquity. This includes, but is not limited to, our justice system. We come together as Alpha brothers, advocates, and scholars to make sense of this moment and where we might go from here. I, Brother Gregory Parks, will moderate a discussion with the following panelists: • Bro. Justin Hansford, J.D. - Professor of Law Director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center, Howard University School of Law • Bro. Rashawn Ray, Ph.D. - Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research, University of Maryland-College Park • Bro. Jamie Riley, Ph.D. Director, Race & Justice, N.A.A.C.P. • Bro. Roy Tatem - Former President, East Valley,

Arizona N.A.A.C.P. • Bro. Etienne Toussaint, J.D. - Assistant Professor of Law, University of South Carolina School of Law • Bro. Gregory Vincent, J.D., Ed.D. - Professor, Department of Educational Policy Studies & Evaluation, University of Kentucky You are invited to a Zoom webinar. • When: Nov 29, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) • Topic: Race and Justice in America: From Ahmaud Arbery to Kyle Rittenhouse Register in advance for this webinar: https://wakeforestuniversity.zoom.us/ webinar/register/WN_ FYlrNm2kSXWFyeZQvRLlmw Meeting ID: 914 8102 6130 Passcode: 028878 After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Message from Mu Lambda and Wellness Committee (MLHWC) the Health andHealth Wellness Committee Mu Lambda Brothers, Welcome to December 2021! December is World Aids Day (Dec. 1st), International Day of Persons w/Disabilities (Dec. 3rd), and National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 6-12) Awareness Month. Below are some articles of interest addressing these topics. Please click on the links or cut and paste into your browser to read the entire articles.

HIV/AIDS and African Americans December 1st is World AIDS Day, reminding us that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is still a worldwide challenge. This year’s theme is “Equitable Access, Everyone’s Voice.” According to HIV.gov, 2021 marks 40 years “since the first five cases of what later became known as AIDS were officially reported.” In the US, more than 700,000 people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the start of the epidemic. Significant strides have been made since the 1980s in terms of prevention and treatment, and new discoveries in research continue to aid in reducing new HIV transmission rates so that patients can live longer and healthier lives. HIV.gov notes, “globally, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has saved more than 20 million lives.” Despite the progress, communities of color continue to be disproportionately affected with higher rates of HIV, and many socio-economic factors can increase risk for transmission. In 2018, Black/African American people accounted for 13% of the US population but 42% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States and dependent areas. “Cultural biases like stigma, discrimination, and homophobia place many African Americans at higher risk for HIV. These barriers prevent many from seeking routine HIV testing or receiving HIV preventative care and treatments due to fear of judgment from family and peers.” (HIV.gov) Although Black/African Americans represent almost 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 42.1 percent of HIV infection cases in 2019. • • • • •

In 2019, African Americans were 8.1 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV infection, as compared to the white population. African American males have 8.4 times the AIDS rate as compared to white males. African American females have 15 times the AIDS rate as compared to white females. African American men are 6.4 times as likely to die from HIV infection as non-Hispanic white men. African American women are 14.5 times as likely to die from HIV infection as white women. Highlighting African-Americans With Disabilities In Honor Of Black History Month As we celebrate Black History Month, which takes place every February, RespectAbility recognizes the contributions made and the important presence of African-Americans to the United States. It is important to note this includes more than 5.6 million African-Americans living with a disability in the U.S., 3.4 million of which are working-age African-Americans with disabilities. Therefore, we would like to reflect on the realities and challenges that continue to shape the lives of African-Americans with disabilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC) Only 28.7 percent of working-age African-Americans with disabilities are employed in the U.S. compared to 72 percent of working-age African-Americans without disabilities. This is in line with the rest of the country, with fully one-in-five Americans having a disability and just 30 percent of those who are working-age being employed, despite polls showing that most of them want to work. This leads to approximately 40 percent of African-Americans with disabilities living in poverty compared to 22 percent of African-Americans without disabilities. Deafblind lawyer Haben Girma advocates for inclusion in both education and Hollywood. For many of the 1,199,743 black students (K-12) with disabilities in America today, the deck is stacked against them. Frequently “invisible disabilities” such as ADHD are not diagnosed and students do not get the supports they need to achieve. Frustrated, they can act out and become suspended. African-American students with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by suspension in schools, with more than one in four boys of color with disabilities — and nearly one in five girls of color with disabilities — receiving an out-of-school suspension. Studies show that when students miss too many days, either for being truant or just being absent, they get so far behind in class that it can lead to them dropping out of school. As documented in Disability & Criminal Justice Reform: Keys to Success, this can lead to the school-to-prison pipeline. Today there are more than 750,000 people with disabilities behind bars in America. Many of them do not have high school diplomas, are functionally illiterate and are people of color. Harriet Tubman did not let her epileptic seizures stop her from risking her life to free slaves through the underground railroad. Overall, only 65 percent of students with disabilities graduate high school compared to 84 percent of students without disabilities. However, only 57 percent of black students with disabilities graduate high school compared to 74.6 percent of black students without disabilities. Guide to a Healthy Holiday Dinner

HOW TO CREATE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY DINNER

Let’s start with a few items we can ditch. A traditional turkey dinner is often filled with ingredients that you want to avoid and keep out of your kitchen. Foods to Avoid 1. Alcohol I understand cocktails can be a staple for family events and parties, but consuming large amounts of alcohol can lead to many health issues and a lot of guests that can’t remember how delicious their dinner was! There are plenty of alternatives to enjoy throughout your holiday get together. More on those alternatives shortly. 2. Gluten Let’s face it, gluten is in everything. Everything you don’t make from scratch, that is. Even if you are purchasing packaged items marked “gluten free”, I bet the ingredients they contain still aren’t something worth writing home about. Gluten can add to that bloated and lethargic feeling most people experience after a holiday dinner. With growing sensitivities to the ingredient, it’s best to keep it off your menu so everyone can enjoy all your tasty dishes. 3. Refined Sugar Typically, at the end of a holiday feast, everyone reaches for a sugary treat to bring them back to life. But that spike in sugar will lead everyone even further into

a zombie-like haze fighting over that last drip of coffee (ok, maybe a little dramatic, but you get the point). Try to create a delicious dessert with naturally sweet, whole foods like dates, maple syrup and raw honey. 4. Damaged Oils Cooking unstable oils and fats damages our health and there’s no room for them in your holiday dinner. Use coconut oil or organic, grass fed butter for your dishes that require heat. Save olive and nut oils for dressings and cold dishes. For more info, check out this handy guide to choosing healthy cooking oils. HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY HOLIDAY SWAPS When you’re avoiding certain items, it’s best to look for healthy alternatives and get creative with the different ingredients you’re swapping in and out. Here are just a few: 1. Use sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes Even though white potatoes are a source of potassium, Vitamin C and fiber they can cause blood sugar imbalances (and they’re not that healthy when most people mash them with butter and cream during the holidays). Go for sweet potatoes that are very blood sugar balancing, plus they’re rich in Vitamin A, a vitamin that is great for boosting the immune system. Continued on next page

2. Season with sea salt instead of iodized salt With over 86 minerals, a pinch of sea salt goes a long way. Ditch the iodized table salt that has no nutritional value for the whole food alternative. 3. Cook with coconut oil instead of vegetable oils Canola and corn oils are some of the most sprayed crops, plus their genetic modification can cause mayhem in your body, especially when heated. Use stable fats like coconut oil for high heat cooking. Coconut oil has a high smoke point, which means it is perfect for roasting vegetables and you get tons of health benefits from consuming another super food. 4. Bake homemade crackers instead of buying them Since we’re avoiding gluten, sodium and damaged oils, the commercial crackers are out! Making your own crackers can be incredibly simple but have big impact. When people find out I make my own crackers, they think I’m the next Martha Stewart! Try these buckwheat crackers or flax crackers. 5. Use homemade gravy instead of powdered gravy Same as those crunchy crackers, powdered sauces and gravies are full of gluten, sodium and a truck load of MSG. And there’s no room for all that on your dinner table. If you’re roasting a turkey, you already have everything you need for a homemade gravy or try this vegan gravy instead. MY HEALTHY HOLIDAY DINNER MENU Now we know what to avoid and what alternatives to use but putting it all together is a whole other challenge. Planning ahead is key for any dinner party, especially a healthy one. There are no “convenience” foods in my kitchen so it usually takes a little longer…but it

is SO worth it in the end, and I think my in-laws agreed with me this past Thanksgiving. And yes, I even made a believer out of my anti-tofu brother in law! Here’s a look at the healthy holiday dinner menu I enjoyed with my family and the menu you can enjoy with your own! BEVERAGES Grapefruit Cinnamon Soda Sparkling water with lemon (you can also try these infused waters) APPETIZER Baked sweet potato with goat cheese & walnuts. Inspired by Oh She Glows Meghan’s Cauliflower Millet Mash Individual stuffed turkey breasts with cranberry and goat cheese Meghan’s Gravy Sauce DESSERT Meghan’s Wild Berry Crumble For additional recipe inspiration, you can check out the recipe section of the ACN blog. Deep South Eggnog Cake INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

½ cup butter, room temperature 1 ¼ cups white sugar 3 eggs, room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon finely grated lemon peel 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup prepared eggnog 2 tablespoons bourbon whiskey

FROSTING • • • • • • • • •

¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups prepared eggnog 1 cup butter, room temperature 1 ½ cups white sugar 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon rum-flavored extract teaspoon finely grated lemon peel ½ cup finely chopped toasted pecans

DIRECTIONS •

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and

flour two 9-inch round baking pans. Beat 1/2 cup butter and 1 1/4 cups sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Mixture should be noticeably lighter in color. Add eggs, one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into butter mixture before adding the next. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon lemon peel, mixing well. Combine 2 cups flour, baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Pour flour mixture into the batter alternately with 1 cup eggnog, mixing until just incorporated. Stir in bourbon. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake in preheated oven until cake springs back when touched lightly with a fingertip or a toothpick inserted in the centers comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes (test both cake layers). Cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting on a wire rack to cool completely. To make frosting, combine 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt

in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in 1 1/2 cups eggnog, whisking until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. When mixture boils, cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool completely to room temperature. Beat 1 cup butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Mix in cooled eggnog mixture, 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, rum extract, and 1/8 teaspoon grated lemon peel. Beat on high speed until mixture is fully incorporated and frosting is fluffy. Spread cake with plain frosting between cake layers, over the top and on the sides. Coat the sides with toasted pecans, pressing the nuts onto sides in small handfuls. Refrigerate until serving time.

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
