TWO JEWELS & TWENTY MEN OF ALPHA OUR CHAPTER

Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

FIRST OFFICERS

The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold Stratton-President, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor Daly-Secretary, Brother Daniel W. Edmonds-Treasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,

“Good Will Is the Monarch of this House”. Sometimes Brothers could use a reminder of this fact. And the times they have exhibited this behavior themselves and have been recipients of it. Since this Black History Month this is a great time of the year to be historical regarding your personal Alpha history. A time of prideful reflection and application of lessons learned to make for a better Brotherhood and personal Alpha Brother. To say it that is easy, to do it takes a consistent investment of your heart and mind amid the plethora of life’s events that has nothing directly to do with being an Alpha Man. So I charge you Brothers with actively making the time. Just like you did when you sought membership into our great Fraternity. And just like what we are about to educate the new men seeking membership. You have to practice actively what you preach. Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message A Cold but Charismatic January!!!

I greet you all with the continued hope for warmth, good health, and family blessings. The new year 2022 is off to an amazing start for Mu Lambda! Though we have been faced with some ICY conditions, it is a comforting feeling to witness the activities of the chapter. Beginning with community service and extending to the chair-men of each division working seamlessly to bring the affairs of our chapter in order, we are stronger. I am approaching my 9th year as an initiate of Mu Lambda and I am happy to see that we have been making strides in creating connectivity to bolster our fraternal bond. Though its nippy out, we are turning a fire inside of this chapter. The digital era has forced new ideas to come to life, in my 8 years, I’ve witnessed the development of a Mu Lambda Cellphone Ap’, the redevelopment of our website, the launch of our virtual meetings, and now I believe the opportunities are truly endless. Who we were in 2012, when I invested All my Heart, my Love & Happiness to this ALPHA, is not the same as 2022! We are better, more efficient, meetings can be accessed online anywhere in the world, our community programming is growing, and our relationships are expanding. I want to continue to encourage innovation in this space and house. All ideas are welcomed. Though we have improved in tremendous ways, there are specific areas that we can tackle together in the next few months. It is time to find space for growth & development in our fundraising department. It is time to put on our creative thinking caps to find ways to close some of the gaps that exist in the chapter - keeping in mind that it is 2022 not 1992. I challenge us all to come together to find sustainable means to support the arms of our operation financially. grants in Tech and Education, reimagined Events, Organizational Partnerships are just a few ideas I envision will aid in bridging the gaps created by the pandemic challenges. But this is not the work of one brother. Many hands make for easy work. I want to continue to encourage solutions, hearty conversations, respectful debate, and positive changes. “Our task is endless...” Happy February Brothers. Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Interview with the Immediate Past President of our Mu Lambda Chapter

TORCH: How did you come up with the idea of Alpha Phi Alpha Way? Brother Eddie Neal: The idea originated Saturday, February 20, 2020, on a call with Brother Mtokufa Ngwenya. I was Mu Lambda Chapter president and Brother Ngwenya was a candidate for the office of MAAC Alumni Vice President. Realizing that he worked as Chief of Staff for a District of Columbia City Councilmember, Mu Lambda proposed the following: 1. Designate First Street NW, starting at Bryant Street to Michigan Avenue, as Alpha Phi Alpha Way. 2. Create a designated Alpha Phi Alpha Day at the District of Columbia City Council each year. 3. A proclamation dedicating December 4th as Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the District of Columbia. TORCH: Why did Mu Lambda select First Street? Brother Eddie Neal: There is a lot of history between Mu Lambda, its members, and creating the ability of home ownership for African Americans on and beyond First Street. At one-point, African Americans were prohibited from purchasing property on one side of First Street. It was a Mu Lambda brother who corrected it. I would suggest publishing the history portion of the street naming request with this article. In addition, Mu Lambda Community House is a staple in the community, located at the corner of First and Bryant Streets NW, and the only Alpha Phi Alpha property in the District of Columbia. Although Alpha Phi Alpha headquarters are located in Baltimore, and the fraternity was started at Cornell in New

York, the fraternity is incorporated in Washington, DC. Unbeknownst to many, prior presidents of the United States used Mu Lambda’s prior houses as the address of record to address correspondence to the fraternity. Continued on the next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORCH: Was Alpha the first in the District of Columbia to do this? Brother Eddie Neal: No. While we like to think of Alpha as being the first – actually Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was first. The Deltas had a street symbolically named in its honor and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity’s symbolic naming was pending. TORCH: It has been a long time, were there any challenges? Brother Eddie Neal: Yes. Covid-19 was an impediment but brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha also created some challenges. Brothers outside of Mu Lambda Chapter threw some obstacles in the way. At the end of the day, it is a historical moment for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the District of Columbia, and Mu Lambda Chapter. TORCH: What were the obstacles and how did you overcome the obstacles? Brother Eddie Neal: Sometimes progress means bypassing the initial channels. Mu Lambda overcame the obstacles with team work. We worked with the neighbors of Bloomingdale; the Bloomingdale Civic Association; Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, Dianne Barnes (SMD 5E09);

and District of Columbia Councilmember, Kenyan R. McDuffie’s office. TORCH: Is there anyone who was more instrumental than others in bringing Alpha Phi Alpha Way to fruition? Brother Eddie Neal: Yes. This may be a surprise but the most instrumental person is not an Alpha. Without Dianne Barnes, none of this would be possible. When things started falling through the cracks, she held my hand and walked me through the process. Many brothers contributed. Brothers Kobina Yanka and Rudolph McGanns (Omega Chapter), gaining the initial support of the Bloomingdale neighbors; Brother Silas Woods, assisting with the Bloomingdale, Mu Lambda, and Alpha research; Brothers Byron L. Williams, Gilbert Douglass, Austin Cooper, and Rylan Harris, leading the committee and working with the other District of Columbia chapters; Brother Kenneth Williams, doing the Alpha Phi Alpha Way graphics for the initial presentation to the ANC and Bloomingdale Civic Association; and Brother President Tony Wilson, seeing the project through to the end; and the brothers on the February 20, 2020, initiating call (I am going by memory and apologize if I forget anyone – Brothers Garrett Miller, Frank King, Jason Jefferson, and Joseph Housey). TORCH: Now that Alpha Phi Alpha Way has passed Mayoral approval, what is next? Brother Eddie Neal: I would like to see a ceremony on First Street, where Mu Lambda files an application with the city to shut the street down on the day the signs are being installed. Have Alpha brothers socially distanced, lining both sides of the street. Have a photographer memorialize the event. Invite city officials. Invite our brothers on the hill. Invite our national and local Alpha officers. I also look at this as the beginning. I think the residents of the District of Columbia will keep be watching us to see what work Alpha Phi Alpha is doing in the District of Columbia. It is also a very good leading into Mu Lambda’s centennial. MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

Mu Lambda Charter Member Brother Victor R. Daly Not Only War: A Story of Two Great Conflicts is the only World War I novel written by an African American veteran. In the book, Montgomery Jason, an idealistic African American college student, enlists to fight for freedom and democracy. When he falls in love with a French woman, he learns that freedom and democracy do not apply to black soldiers. Victor Daly wrote ""Not Only War"" in the midst of a major shift in America's racial dynamics. Hundreds of thousands of African Americans moved from the South to the North to work in wartime industries, and thousands more joined the American Expeditionary Force. Daly was among a small group of African Americans who trained as officers. He saw combat in France and was decorated for his service there. After the war, when racial violence in America escalated, Daly and many other returning soldiers fought for civil rights. During the Harlem Renaissance, African Americans used literature to make the case for equality. In ""Not Only War"", Daly portrays the effects of the color line on black soldiers in the segregated military. The two great conflicts in the book are the physical combat of war and the psychological combat of racism. In addition to the original content of ""Not Only War"", this paperback reprint includes three short stories and a previously published interview, as well as an introduction by David A. Davis. Project Alpha Highlights: World AIDS Day December 1, 2021 On Wednesday December 1st Project Alpha participated in World AIDS Day by creating red ribbons and passing out pocket pamphlets promoting safe sex practices, proper condom use, and resources for testing to combat against the spread of HIV and AIDS. Students at Ballou High school held a discussion on the statistics around HIV and AIDS among different cultures, ethnic populations, the LGBTQ community, and others. The Day was completed with Ballou students and brothers of Mu Lambda chapter created a public service announcement encouraging all to wear a red ribbon in support of research for AIDS. This was also done in remembrance of those who have succumb to the disease and been affected by love one who have contracted it.

Message from the Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC) Health and Wellness Committee Mu Lambda Brothers,

February is American Heart Month, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and National Cancer Prevention Month. Below are some articles of interest addressing these topics. Please click on the links or cut and paste into your browser to read the entire articles.

American Heart Health and African Americans

Study: Heart disease, stroke cutting lives of Black Americans Black Americans have a shorter life expectancy than whites due in part to higher rates of heart disease and stroke, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA). While heart disease is the leading cause of death for all Americans, heart disease develops earlier and deaths from heart disease are higher in blacks, due in part to risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. Citing health data from several NHLBI-funded studies— including MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) external link —the statement highlights the need for educating black children and young adults about the importance of healthy lifestyles. It appears in the AHA journal Circulation external link . Racial and Ethnic Differences in Macular Degeneration: African Americans

Macular degeneration is currently the leading cause of vision loss in America. It affects more than 10 million people – more than cataracts and glaucoma combined.1 MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Macular degeneration does not affect all groups of people at the same rate. It affects Caucasians more than African-Americans or people of Hispanic/Latino background. There may also be genetic differences that underpin the disease for people with different ethnic origins.1 This article covers general information about macular degeneration as well as what we know about this disease among African-Americans. For more information, visit - https://maculardegeneration.net/clinical/african-americans

National Cancer Prevention Month: What You Need to Know According to a study conducted by the American Cancer Society, at least 42% of newly diagnosed cancers in the US, which translates to about 750,000 cases in 2020, are potentially avoidable. This includes the 19% of all cancers that are caused by smoking and the 18% caused by a combination of excess body weight, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity. With February being National Cancer Prevention Month, here is a round-up of the latest news and updates that focus on the role of cancer prevention: • Over the next century, successful implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) elimination strategy could reduce cervical cancer mortality by almost 99% and save more than 62 million women’s lives. •

A recent study determined circulating tumor cells were associated with melanoma relapse, suggesting that this form of liquid biopsy could help identify patients who would benefit from adjuvant therapy.

According to researchers, when individuals quit smoking it not only stops further damage from accruing, but it also may lead to the reawakening of lung cells that were not damaged by tobacco carcinogens.

A new AI system could possibly surpass human experts in the prediction of breast cancer, potentially leading to enhanced screening results and earlier identification of the disease.

Online and digital videos were found to play a key role in cancer education, leading to increased knowledge and interventions, however access for vulnerable populations needs to be improved.

Engaging in the recommended amount of leisure-time physical activity (7.5-15 MET hours/week) was found to be associated with a lower risk for 7 different cancer types.

Greater adherence to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)/American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) cancer prevention recommendations appeared to be associated with decreased colorectal cancer (CRC) risk for both African Americans and whites.

A blood-based screening test, presented at the 2020 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium, held from January 23-25, in San Francisco, California, could potentially diagnose multiple cancer types earlier, including gastrointestinal cancers across stages at high sensitivity.

Man whose arrest led to 'separate but equal' is pardoned

Louisiana’s governor on Wednesday posthumously pardoned Homer Plessy, the Black man whose arrest for refusing to leave a whites-only railroad car in 1892 led to the Supreme Court ruling that cemented “separate but equal” into U.S. law for half a century. The state Board of Pardons last year recommended the pardon for Plessy, who boarded the rail car as a member of a small civil rights group hoping to overturn a state law segregating trains. Instead, the protest led to the 1896 ruling known as Plessy v. Ferguson, which solidified whitesonly spaces in public accommodations such as transportation, hotels and schools for decades. At a ceremony held near the spot where Plessy was arrested, Gov. John Bel Edwards said he was “beyond grateful” to help restore Plessy’s “legacy of the rightness of his cause … undefiled by the wrongness of his conviction.” Keith Plessy, whose great-great-grandfather was Plessy’s cousin, called the event “truly

a blessed day for our ancestors … and for children not yet born.” Since the pardon board vote in November, “I’ve had the feeling that my feet are not touching the ground because my ancestors are carrying me,” he said. Justice Henry Billings Brown wrote in the 7-1 decision: “Legislation is powerless to eradicate racial instincts or to abolish distinctions based upon physical differences.” Justice John Marshall Harlan was the only dissenting voice, writing that he believed the ruling “will, in time, prove to be quite as pernicious as the decision made by this tribunal in the Dred Scott Case” — an 1857 decision that said no Black person who had been enslaved or was descended from a slave could ever become a U.S. citizen. The ceremony began with cellist Kate Dillingham — a descendant of the dissenting justice — playing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” while the audience sang along. continued on next page

The Plessy v. Ferguson ruling allowing racial segregation across American life stood as the law of the land until the Supreme Court unanimously overruled it in 1954, in Brown v. the Board of Education. Both cases argued that segregation laws violated the 14th Amendment’s right to equal protection. The Brown decision led to widespread public school desegregation and the eventual stripping away of Jim Crow laws that discriminated against Black Americans. Plessy was a member of the Citizens Committee, a New Orleans group trying to overcome laws that rolled back post-Civil War advances in equality. The 30-year-old shoemaker lacked the business, political and educational accomplishments of most of the other members, Keith Weldon Medley wrote in the book ”We As Freemen: Plessy v. Ferguson.” But his light skin — court papers described him as someone whose “one eighth African blood” was “not discernable” — positioned him for the train car protest. “His one attribute was being white enough to gain access to the train and black enough to be arrested for doing so,” Medley wrote. Eight months after the ruling in his case, Plessy pleaded guilty and was fined $25 at a time when 25 cents would buy a pound of round steak and 10 pounds of potatoes. Keith Plessy said donations collected by the committee paid the fine and other legal costs. But Plessy returned to obscurity, and never returned to shoemaking. He worked alternately as a laborer, warehouse worker and clerk before becoming a collector for the Black-owned People’s Life Insurance Company, Medley wrote. He died in 1925 with the conviction on his record. Relatives of Plessy and John Howard Ferguson, the judge who oversaw his case

in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, became friends decades later and formed a nonprofit that advocates for civil rights education. Also present at the pardon ceremony were descendants of the Citizens Committee and descendants of the local judge. The purpose of the pardon “is not to erase what happened 125 years ago but to acknowledge the wrong that was done,” said Phoebe Ferguson, the judge’s great-greatgranddaughter. Other recent efforts have acknowledged Plessy’s role in history, including a 2018 vote by the New Orleans City Council to rename a section of the street where he tried to board the train in his honor. The five blocks of Homer Plessy Way run through the campus of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, a public school where the courtyard ceremony was held. Cars from the city’s Public Belt Railroad served as a backdrop for the signing of the pardon, which took place blocks from where Plessy was arrested. The governor’s office described this as the first pardon under Louisiana’s 2006 Avery Alexander Act , which allows pardons for people convicted under laws that were intended to discriminate. Former state Sen. Edwin Murray said he originally wrote the act to automatically pardon anyone convicted of breaking a law written to encode discrimination. He said he made it optional after people arrested for civil rights protests told him they considered the arrests a badge of honor. BLACK BILLIONAIRE BROTHER ROBERT SMITH EMERGING AS POSSIBLE BIDDER FOR DENVER BRONCOS NFL FRANCHISE Re-print article by Derek Major January 21, 2022

The Denver Broncos NFL franchise is expected to be sold this off-season, and Black billionaire Brother Robert Smith is emerging as a candidate to buy the team. Smith founded Vista Equity Partners in 2000 and is still its chairman and CEO. Vista currently has $86 billion in assets under wealth management. According to Denver Gazette Columnist Woody Paige, other potential buyers of the Broncos include Amazon Founder and Chairman Jeff Bezos, former Broncos quarterback and current General Manager John Elway, and former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, are also in groups trying to buy the team. Smith made headlines in 2019 when he gave the commencement speech at Morehouse College and pledged to pay off the student loans of the entire graduating class, nearly 400 students. The pledge ended up costing Smith $34 million. According to Bleacher Report, if the Broncos go up for sale, it would likely be through an auction because the team is owned under the Patrick D. Bowlen trust. Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reported the trustees “would have a fiduciary responsibility to the trust’s beneficiaries to go with the highest bidder, pending approval from 24 of the NFL’s 32 owners.”

The beneficiaries of the trust are Bowlen’s seven children and his brother. This season, the Broncos did not qualify for the playoffs, finishing fourth in the AFC West with a 7-10 record, losing each of their last four games. The team has failed to make the playoffs in the last six years since they won Super Bowl 50 in 2016 against the Carolina Panthers. Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
