Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,

First I want to say Happy New Year Brothers. I am hopeful that the start of this new year has actually been good safe for you and your families. As you are well aware the world is still in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic and unfortunately it has touched more of us recently than this time last year. We will all have persevere and continue fulfilling the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha with the limitations that come with living through a global pandemic. This brings to mind a quote I came across recently from our dearly departed Brother Martin Luther King Jr. “May I stress the need for courageous, intelligent, and dedicated leadership... Leaders of sound integrity. Leaders not in love with publicity, but in love with justice. Leaders not in love with money, but in love with humanity. Leaders who can subject their particular egos to the greatness of the cause.” I think these words above quote is a fitting reminder at the start of a new year of our role as Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha in the service of the wider humanity despite the obstacles. Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message The dawn of a new year is upon us!

Greetings Brothers and supporters of the Magnificent Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and HAPPY NEW YEAR. 2021 is now a memory filled with a series of life shaping experiences that have molded us into who we are determined to be for this new season. The two year cries of the pandemic has given us methods of efficiency for communication, “work from home” models that are seemingly welcomed, much needed down-time to reset and recharge our mental batteries, and a promise of a bright future as we persevere. 2022 has more in store for us than we can imagine. As we continue to plan and prepare for Mu Lambda’s centennial celebration 2023, we have the privilege of a year to map out a course that will lead to a stamp of excellence in Washington D.C. I myself am looking forward to the ability to dust off the tuxedos and shine my patent leather shoes to give way to multiple evenings of dinners in person, and smiles. Hopefully my jackets will still fit! But these occasions will require an ALL HANDS IN approach to get to the finish line. The committee chaired by brother Jason Jefferson, extends its hands toward the chapter to get there. I know this call will not go unheard. Last year, though confined to the constraints of our new societal norms, our chapter thrived in community service, educational outreach, reclamation, and internal communication and growth. Mu Lambda is at its strongest and growing in comradery. Socially, though small, we have gathered for Omega services to send our brothers home, we have fed the women of the house of Ruth, had brotherhood smokes, packed trucks, attended breakfasts, showed up and showed out all while maintaining a very low mortality rate due to the pandemic. Losing any of our beloved brothers is a hard experience, but together Mu Lambda maintains its ability to weather the storm - in BUSINESS & BROTHERHOOD Our future is dependent on each asset of this house. Our families especially, who continue to support the brothers as they give selflessly of their time and experience to this labor of love. Brothers and wellwishers, your ongoing commitment to the service and advocacy of the Washington DC community does not go unnoticed. your charitable donations, your prayers, your calls, emails and attendance is always appreciated. Together we are on a mission to continue in our transformative ways. It is my mission as Vice President to ensure that we continue to nurture an environment of sustainable growth. I look forward to 2022 and growth with you. Yours Respectfully, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

How HR Records co-owner Charvis Campbell would spend a perfect day in D.C.

would spend the day with his family at some of his favorite spots around his Petworth-Brightwood neighborhood.

By Stephanie Williams November 29, 2021 at 7:00 a.m. EST

In D.C. Dream Day, we ask our favorite people in the area to tell us how they would spend a perfect day in the District. I have two boys who wake up real early. The first thing I’m going to do is personal hygiene stuff and then head to Büna Coffeehouse. A happy wife is a happy life. Büna is a coffee shop on Georgia Avenue. It’s Ethiopian, family-owned and we love going there. We’d get coffee for my wife and pastries for the kids.

There’s a lot that we miss by streaming music on our mobile devices: the lack of physical ownership; the excitement that comes from opening a favorite record for the first time. And, according to HR Records co-owner Charvis Campbell , an important piece of history. “As it relates to records specifically, I like to think it’s history for me, Black history,” Campbell says. “An expression of our culture, and in many ways, documenting Black history through music.” HR Records (H.R. is short for “home rule”) is one of only a few dozen Black-owned record stores in the country. A native New Yorker, Campbell is a graduate of Howard University and spent several years working in higher education before opening his Brightwood shop in 2018. Now, he’s educating the world through music, via an expansive selection of jazz, soul and R&B records that fill HR’s Kennedy Street space. When he’s not acquiring records, putting in hours at his shop or running his nonprofit group, Home Rule Music and Film Preservation Foundation, Campbell

Next up after that is a hike in Rock Creek Park. One of the great things is during covid we’ve been kind of rediscovering Rock Creek. We’re going to do a wonderful hike in Rock Creek Park at 16th Street by the tennis courts and head down those trails, which has really been fun. At one point during covid, those streets were blocked off and it was amazing. From there, we’re going to head to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Any chance that we get to go there is culturally refreshing for us. We can’t spend the whole day continued on the next page

in there like we always do, but at the very least, we’re going to hit that fourth floor, which is their culture [floor]. Their music and seeing the photography . . . it just reminds me of the great accomplishments that our people have done. And then we’re going to have lunch in [the museum’s] cafeteria, which we’ve done in the past pre-covid, and it’s been terrific.

From there, we’re going to grab pizza from Timber Pizza Company. I’m a New Yorker, so it’s not the New York pizza [I was] accustomed to growing up, but amazing pizza. My kids go for the Pretty in Pepperoni, but my wife and I love the vegetable pizzas.

After that, we’re back in our community. I love stopping at Everyday Sundae, which is this new sundae spot, incidentally, on Kennedy Street. And my boys seem to have a personal and business relationship with Mr. Charles [Foreman] who runs the place and owns it. They get what they want, and I don’t seem to get charged too much. I need to figure that out one of these days, but it’s really been great to have that sundae spot in the community.

And then, I’m going to sneak over to Anxo cidery. Anxo has been a good foundation on Kennedy Street and the Brightwood-Petworth community, and I would go over there and have one of their amazing ciders. This is where I think this really becomes a family day. We’re going to go to Jazz in the Parks at the Parks at Walter Reed. They’ve been doing this for a couple years now and brought it back this past year. Walter Reed is going through this crazy construction, but there’s a [park] in the middle and it’s kind of sloped on a hill. They have this gazebo and it’s really ideal for music and events. Every chance we get we continue to go there for jazz and other events, and it’s a good way for the kids to run around and use some of their energy, and for us adults to sit back and enjoy some good music.

So this is where it gets fun for us. So dream day, two kids. We have grandparents in town and we are going out for a date night. My wife and I are leaving the kids at home and, as much as we’re going to try to hit the town, we’ll probably still be in bed early. There’s this wonderful art museum in Eckington that we’ve gone to a couple times called Stable. There’s one artist who is a fixture there, Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre. He’s Haitian American, went to Howard University, and he’s done some amazing work and it’s just beautiful. If we’re lucky, we’ll run into Ellington Robinson, another young and wonderful artist. Then, my wife and I are going to go out for drinks and a late dinner at Mr. Braxton Bar & Kitchen on Georgia Avenue. It’s a terrific local spot, and they have amazing music in there when they do have music. And since, again, it’s grandparents [watching the kids], we’re going to do a nightcap. So we’re going to head back home after that, and there’s this wonderful [restaurant] that’s right around the corner from our house called DC Corazon. It’s a Spanish restaurant. We’re probably not going to have dinner, but we typically go there for drinks as much as we can, whenever we can. Message from the Health and Wellness Committee Mu Lambda Brothers, Happy New Year 2022! January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, and Cervical Health Awareness Month. Below are some articles of interest addressing these topics. Please click on the links or cut and paste into your browser to read the entire articles. HIV/AIDS and African Americans More than 10,000 Black Philadelphians are participating in a Penn study to understand glaucoma. Diane McCoy Lackey knew something was wrong with her right eye. “Something just happened, and it seemed that I couldn’t see,” the North Philadelphia resident said. Her ophthalmologist offered a sobering diagnosis: glaucoma, a class of eye conditions that damage the nerve that connects the eye to the brain. In 5% of patients, it leads to blindness. Black people such as Lackey are five times more likely to develop glaucoma than white people, and the disease tends to strike Black patients a decade earlier and progress faster. Yet, most glaucoma research — as with many other medical studies — has focused on white patients. For more information on Glaucoma and African Americans and other resources – please click the links below - https://www.inquirer.com/health/ glaucoma-genetics-black-penn-philadelphiascheie-20210809.html Additional Resources https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/ outreach-campaigns-and-resources/glaucomaresources/glaucoma-awareness-month https://www.glaucoma.org/news/glaucomaawareness-month.php

Cervical Health Awareness Month The National Cervical Cancer Coalition recognizes Cervical Health Awareness Month in January — a time to raise awareness about cervical cancer, HPV disease, and the importance of getting screened. Use these Cervical Cancer Awareness resources from the CDC to help educate people online and in your community. You can also share our easy-to-understand MyHealthfinder resources to encourage people to get screened for cervical cancer and learn about the HPV vaccine. And don’t forget to explore the Healthy People Cancer topic to learn about progress made to reduce new cases of cancer. For more information, visit https://www.nccc-online.org/cervical-healthawareness-month/ Disparities in Cervical Cancer Follow-Up and Screening in African American Women Why are black women more likely to die of cervical cancer? • Later stage at diagnosis. African American women are more likely to present with advanced cervical cancer than non-Hispanic white women. • Less-aggressive treatment. African American women are more likely to receive no treatment after a cancer diagnosis. Differences in treatment may be attributed to comorbid conditions, stage at cancer diagnosis and patient refusal. • Less access to care. A study from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program of the National Cancer Institute looked at 7,267 women (4,431 non-Hispanic white women, 1,830 Hispanic white women and 1,006 non-Hispanic African American women) who were diagnosed with primary invasive cervical cancer from 1992 to 1996 and followed through 2000. African American women had a 19 percent higher mortality rate compared with non-Hispanic white women during follow-up despite adjusting for age, stage, histology and time of first treatment. continued on the next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

However, a later study from the same program found no such difference after 1995, when the data were adjusted for marital status, disease stage, age, treatment, grade and histology.

My life is a miracle, man. What do I got to stress about? I made it out the hood. I made millions of dollars in the league. Back in the day, we popped more bottles than Big Meech and them!!! If you came through Houston, you were guaranteed to have a good time. Especially once Hakeem retired, the shackles were off. Dream wasn’t around to talk sense into me anymore, and I had to carry the torch for the city.

Man, we used to drop $20,000 in the club just for show. Passing out bottles of Veuve Clicquot like Santa Claus. I’m just being real. I never even saw a bill at the end of the night. I wouldn't even know how much we spent ’til my accountant hit me up about the black card statement at the end of the month. Smoke coming out his ears. “Steve!!!!!!!!!! Come on, man!!!!!!!” All you saw was zeroes. Commas. Whole bunch of commas. Nobody did it like the Houston Rockets. Nobody did it bigger than Steve Francis. And I’d do it all again. A lot of guys can make it to the league. A lot of guys can be All-Stars. A lot of guys can get money. But how many guys can be City? So that’s who’s talking to you right now, just to be clear. Not some therapist. Not your teacher. Not some dude who grew up in the suburbs. This is City talking to you. So you know what I’m saying is real. continue on the next page

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About six years ago, I started struggling with my mental health. At the time, I was dealing with so much stress and anxiety that all I wanted to do was just drink to shut my brain off. I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I didn’t want to think. I just wanted to sit back with the Juice and Goose, in my own world. I just wanted to be numb. That’s the best way I can describe it. Pretty soon, I was drinking like every day. My career was over, and I didn’t know what was coming next, and I was just lost, man. Some of you are probably shaking your head right now. And I get it. I get it!!! When I was growing up, you didn’t talk about your emotions. Come on, man. In the hood, that was like snitching. You just don’t do it. You keep it to yourself and you keep it moving. But that’s why I’m sharing my story. Because I know how many kids out there are growing up just like I did, and they don’t have anybody to talk to about this stuff.

old, watching this happen in my own home, just shocked. And then it’s almost like, as the years go by, seeing violence and despair becomes normal to you. Sometimes I think PTSD is the curse of the projects. You learn to just bury all your emotions. You keep it moving. You might laugh about something with your friends, like it’s all a joke, but deep down you’re scared as hell. So you just look for an escape.

I know how many kids out there are growing up just like I did, and they don’t have anybody to talk to about this stuff. - Steve Francis

Listen, when I was growing up in D.C. in the ’80s, I saw things that would blow the average person’s mind. My very first memory is getting stripsearched by the guards at Lorton penitentiary, where my father was locked up. They would literally check all the kids to see if they were being used to smuggle in contraband. I was like three or four years old. “Pull down his pants.” Yeah, for real. Imagine that being your first memory. When you grow up in that environment, it marks you. D.C. at that time, during the crack epidemic? It was like a war zone. You couldn’t even let your guard down and feel safe in your house. I remember one day — I remember it like it was yesterday, actually — I was in our apartment with my grandma after school, and all of a sudden this dude was banging on our door. Bap-bap-bap-bap!! My grandmother opens the door, but she won’t let the dude in. So he shoves open the door and comes running into the apartment. My stepfather and this dude had some business to settle, apparently, because they got into a melee right in the hallway. One second I’m watching cartoons, the next second it’s just chaos. And that wasn’t even the worst part. The worst part was when the police showed up. They run into the building and start shouting, and asking what happened, and then they start beating the hell out of my stepfather and the dude right in front of my whole family. They cuff them both right in front of us and take them off to jail. I’m like 11 years

Some guys do it with beer. Some guys do it with drugs. For me, it was always basketball. You could catch me outside the deli at any hour of the day with a ball in my hand. Sitting in the parking lot, doing this and that for the drug dealers to make a little money, just dribbling. I used to be a phone boy. You know what that is? That’s the hood operator. I’d answer the pay phone for the drug dealers. “Yo, you got this and that?” “Yeah, come to the spot in 20 minutes.” Every day after school, that was my job. Innocent, skinny-ass little Steve. The perfect cover. You’d see 15 drug dealers standing over on one side of the parking lot — 15 drug dealers standing on the other side of the lot. And then in the middle of all of them you’d see me with my basketball, shooting jumpers into the hole in the top of the phone booth. continue on the next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

Basketball was my escape. All around me, it could be chaos. But when I had the ball in my hands, I was in my own world. For 22 years, hooping was my self-medication. That was my ticket out of Maple Avenue. Out of poverty. Out of being in survival mode 24/7. So when I finally made it to the league? When I became a millionaire at 22? Psssssshhhhh. It was like I could finally breathe. I could finally relax and enjoy life. So that’s why I went so hard in the club and enjoyed every moment. That’s why you’d always see me smiling. I was a walking miracle, man. I was bringing everybody with me.

the span of about a year, my NBA career ended, my marriage ended, and my stepfather committed suicide. And that’s when my mother’s death fully hit me, all those years later.

10 years later, once my career was winding down, it was like the floodgates opened. - Steve Francis

I don’t know what depression feels like for every person out there. But for me, it just felt like a spiral of negativity.

It’s all on me. Put it on the black card and let the accountant worry about it!! We the bottle boys!!! But looking back on it, I was definitely ignoring a lot of pain. Once you get on the NBA roller coaster, there’s no brakes. I never processed a lot of the trauma that I’d experienced when I was growing up. The darkest day of my life was when I buried my mother at 18 years old, right before I went off to junior college. Cancer. She was my best friend in the whole world. When I say her name to this day — I get a little bit emotional, because that scar is still so raw. But at the time, it’s like I didn’t even get to grieve for a minute. It was like just, “Yo, I gotta be the man of the house. I gotta get my GED. I gotta go play JUCO. I gotta handle my business. I gotta get us outta here.” I gotta be the man of the house, I gotta be the man of the house, I gotta be the man…. How many times do we say that, every day? I couldn’t talk to anybody about how bad I was hurting when my mom passed — not even my boys. So I just buried it. And then 10 years later, once my career was winding down, it was like the floodgates opened. I tell people all the time: I experienced four deaths almost simultaneously. In

It’s a dark place, man. What did DMX say? It’s dark and hell is hot. You just want to numb the pain. So yeah, I was drinking heavy at that time, trying to erase all those memories. You’ve probably seen the pictures of me in the club. The Internet was on my ass, man. They were Photoshoppin’ your boy. The only thing that really hurt me was the people saying that I was on crack. My children had to see that. I mean, come on, man. I was going through a lot at the time, and a lot of people in our community have been destroyed by drugs, and I didn’t think those comments were right. Yes, I was drunk off my ass in some of those pictures, for sure. But I wasn’t on drugs. I just want to say that, for the record, and for my children. It was one simple conversation that really put me on the path to getting some help. I was talking to my friend Chamique Holdsclaw one day, and for whatever reason I was able to open up to her, because I knew she’d understand me. At that point, I just said to myself, “Yo, you know what? I’m so tired, man. I can’t keep doing this.” continue on the next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And you know what? Getting help was really easy. It’s not some big thing. I literally just looked up a number on Google, and I started talking to a counselor. It was that simple. If you would’ve told me at 17 years old when I was out on the corner that I’d be talking about my mental health, I would’ve laughed at you. But it was the best move I’ve ever made. Just being able to talk with someone about all the things I’ve been through instead of self-medicating and trying to bury everything … it changed my life. Look, I’m not going to lie to you. I’m not a saint, man. I’m not trying to preach to you. But I’m really proud to say that I haven’t had a drink in about two years, and I’m doing really good. I feel like I have a purpose again. And a big part of that purpose is just to tell my story. And look, to this day, it’s something that feels a little bit weird to talk about. (That little voice is saying, Yo, stop snitching, Steve!!! These people don’t care about your problems, man!!!) We’re hardwired to think that way, you know what I mean?

The truth is, I’ve dealt with depression. I’ve dealt with anxiety. I’ve tried to solve my problems with the bottle. But thank God, I reached out and got some help. Thank God, I’m straight. Thank God, I’m here for the most important job I got in this world, and that’s to be a dad for my children. (And these lucky-ass kids are neighbors with Roger Clemens and Chris Paul, so I must be doing something right man, damn!!) Listen — I popped 10,000 bottles and lived enough for 10 lifetimes. I’m a different man today than I was a few years ago. I’ve found my peace. But at the end of the day.… I’m still the same Steve Francis. I’m still funny as hell. I’ll still mess up a black card every now and then. I’m still the City. I’m just man enough to know when to ask for help. If I can do it, then you can, too. But I feel like there’s a lot of kids out there who need to hear this message from somebody like me.

SLOW COOKER ORANGE CHICKEN

Why rush out for disappointing fast food when you can take it slow and enjoy the best version of the same meal? Slow Cooker Orange Chicken practically cooks itself, so you still have that don’t- need-to-worry feeling that fast food provides without having to leave the house. Its savory chicken is coated in the same sweet and tangy citrus glaze that gets everyone excited. Slow Cooker Orange Chicken satisfies cravings with its beautiful balance of flavors and its surprising simplicity. INGREDIENTS • 1 1/4 pounds chicken breasts, boneless, skinless, and cut into 1-inch chunks 1/4 cup cornstarch • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste • 1/4 cup vegetable oil • 3/4 cup orange marmalade • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar • 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional) • 2 tablespoons green onions, sliced (optional) • rice, cooked, for serving (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium bowl, add the chicken, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. 2. Toss to combine and evenly coat the chicken. 3. In a large pan on the stove-top over medium-high heat, heat the vegetable oil. 4. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken in a single layer in the pan and cook until each side is browned, about 3-4 minutes per side. If you do not have enough space in the pan, cook the chicken in batches. 5. Grease the pot of a slow cooker. 6. Add the chicken to the slow cooker. 7. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange marmalade, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, and garlic. 8. Pour the sauce over the chicken and gently stir to coat evenly. 9. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 2-3 hours. 10. Top with the sesame seeds and green onions, and serve over rice! Brother Derrick Butts

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
