The President’s Message Greetings Brothers As we come to an end to the 2020-2021 fraternal year I thank you again Brothers for all that you do. I also want to thank you for entrusting me with being the Mu Lambda Chapter President during this time, and for allowing me to serve again as your Chapter President for the 2021 – 2022 Fraternal Year. There have been many reflections of the past year from many differing quarters. I will be succinct and say it has given us unprecedent opportunities to learn, adapt, empathize and appreciate this thing we call life. I would also say glancing back at the last year fills me with positive anticipation for the upcoming year. Many more opportunities to interact in person with you my Brothers who I have truly missed, serve our community in person and execute on working more collaboratively with other organizations who serve the underserved. With the above last sentence in mind Brothers I want you to prepare yourself for far more inperson engagement during the 2021-2022 Fraternal Year than were we able to execute during this past Fraternal Year. The Vice President’s Message Greetings Brothers

As we close this chapter of our Fraternal year and embark upon a new one, I would like to continue to thank the members of this general body and executive board for their continued work to build Mu Lambda over the last year. In last month’s message to the Torch, I personally wanted to thank as many brothers in the house for their work and worth. Each of the brothers in Mu Lambda play an important role in creating the glue that was necessary for us to make it through the battles of the last year and I continue to encourage each brother to continue to invest in our mission to retain a standard of excellence for the chapter and the communities we serve. As we look forward to the upcoming fraternal year, I am mostly grateful that this brotherhood has seen a future with me remaining in the position as Vice President. This responsibility is one that I do not take lightly as I work diligently to create an important balance of BROTHERHOOD and BUSINESS! As large and diverse of a chapter that we are, our goal has to be to create a space for balancing our desires. BROTHERHOOD: I lean heavily on this concept for the chapter as we create a safe haven for brothers to shake hands, exchange greetings and depart friends. Though we all come from different experiences in our life journey, when we come together we must find the common grounds to bond with each member of the chapter. Summer is around the corner and I will be proposing a few brotherhood smokes, barbecues, block clean ups, city rides, motorcycle meetups, gun range gatherings and other social outings that will encourage the brotherly bond that creates the life long investments to Mu Lambda and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. BUSINESS: We have been a chapter that has invested heavily on conducting the business of the fraternity and there will be no fractures in this mission. From Education to the Mu Lambda Foundation, We are charged with creating and fulfilling service and advocacy to the community and in this upcoming year as we take strides toward MidTerm elections and other important changes in the way that we interact with the multiple business arms of our chapter, I would like to bolster the support that is necessary to get the job done! Many hands make for light work, so I want to continue to encourage Brotherhood in business and Business in brotherhood. We have many opportunities to continue to build this chapter beyond its current status. I am happy to play an integral part in seeing us through these moments - In Service and Fraternal Uplift! Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

May 31, 2021 My Brothers of Alpha, Today marks the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre, which occurred over approximately an 18-hour period from May 31 to June 1, 1921. On those dates, white residents, many of them deputized and given weapons by city officials, attacked residents, homes, and businesses in the predominately Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This event marks one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history. For a period of time, the actual narrative of this horrific incident remained obscure as news reports were largely suppressed despite the fact that hundreds of people were killed and thousands were left homeless. Even today, there are efforts to prevent the teaching of the history surrounding this tragedy. Although a century has passed, justice still has not been served for the survivors of the massacre. As recently as the past few weeks, we have watched the deterioration of civil rights and voter protection efforts gained through the civil rights movement of the sixties as well as the need for social justice and police reform here in the United States and across the globe. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has always been a leader in communities around the world advocating for education, civil rights, social justice, economic empowerment, youth and the family. With key Brothers as leaders of organizations and along with the efforts of fraternity-wide programming, we have been able to partner within our communities to make an impact. I am calling on all Brothers to help strengthen our partnerships and to increase our efforts in making the communities that we live in and support more viable. We need Brothers to continue leaning-in and to synergize with our efforts to help make a difference. Some Brothers are leading by spearheading efforts with police oversight and through stabilizing minority businesses and services in their respective communities. Moreover, other Brothers are running for office locally or even on the state/provincial and national level, in and outside of the continental United States. So as we reflect on the centennial of the Tulsa Massacre, I ask all Alpha men to consider or even re-consider working with our brotherhood to make a difference where you are today…in the communities in which we live. We need you to encourage a Brother to reactivate financially and through service with Alpha as we function as catalysts for community partnerships and positive community impact. While we can certainly celebrate the victories in our past, let us not forget the stinging injustice that was unanswered through the lingering wake of the Tulsa Massacre. Our mission is clear. Alpha Phi Alpha develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence while providing service and advocacy for our communities. Alpha Men, the Men of Distinction, have always led the way and will continue to do so! Fraternally,

Willis L. Lonzer, III, Ph.D. General President MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

President Biden declares May 31, 2021, a Day of Remembrance: 100 Years After The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre by: Kaylee Douglas, Posted: May 31, 2021

WASHINGTON (KFOR) – President Joe Biden today issued a Proclamation to declare Monday, May 31, 2021, a Day of Remembrance: 100 Years After The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. “One hundred years ago, a violent white supremacist mob raided, firebombed, and destroyed approximately 35 square blocks of the thriving Black neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Families and children were murdered in cold blood. Homes, businesses, and churches were burned. In all, as many as 300 Black Americans were killed, and nearly 10,000 were left destitute and homeless. Today, on this solemn centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre, I call on the American people to reflect on the deep roots of racial terror in our Nation and recommit to the work of rooting out systemic racism across our country. Before the Tulsa Race Massacre, Greenwood was a thriving Black community that had grown into a proud economic and cultural hub. At its center was Greenwood Avenue, commonly known as Black Wall Street. Many of Greenwood’s 10,000 residents were Black sharecroppers who fled racial violence after the Civil War. In the decades following the Civil War and Reconstruction, Greenwood became a place where Black Americans were able to make a new start and secure economic progress despite the continued pain of institutional and overt racism. The community was home to a growing number of prominent Black entrepreneurs as well as working-class Black families who shared a commitment to social activism and economic opportunity. As Greenwood grew, Greenwood Avenue teemed with successful Blackowned businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and offices for doctors, lawyers, and dentists. The community also maintained its own school system, post office, a savings and loan institution, hospital, and bus and taxi service. Despite rising Jim Crow systems and the reemergence of the Ku Klux Klan, Greenwood’s economic prosperity

grew, as did its citizens’ demands for equal rights. This made the community a source of pride for many Black Americans. It also made the neighborhood and its families a target of white supremacists. In 2 days, a violent mob tore down the hard-fought success of Black Wall Street that had taken more than a decade to build. In the years that followed, the destruction caused by the mob was followed by laws and policies that made recovery nearly impossible. In the aftermath of the attack, local ordinances were passed requiring new construction standards that were prohibitively expensive, meaning many Black families could not rebuild. Later, Greenwood was redlined by mortgage companies and deemed “hazardous” by the Federal Government so that Black homeowners could not access home loans or credit on equal terms. And in later decades, Federal investment, including Federal highway construction, tore down and cut off parts of the community. The attack on Black families and Black wealth in Greenwood persisted across generations. The Federal Government must reckon with and acknowledge the role that it has played in stripping wealth and opportunity from Black communities. The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to acknowledging the role Federal policy played in Greenwood and other Black communities and addressing longstanding racial inequities through historic investments in the economic security of children and families, programs to provide capital for small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas, including minority-owned businesses, and ensuring that infrastructure projects increase opportunity, advance racial equity and environmental justice, and promote affordable access. A century later, the fear and pain from the devastation of Greenwood is still felt. As Viola Fletcher, a 107-year-old survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre Continued on next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

courageously testified before the Congress recently, “I will never forget the violence of the white mob when we left our home. I still see Black men being shot, Black bodies lying in the street. I still smell smoke and see fire. I still see Black businesses being burned. I still hear airplanes flying overhead. I hear the screams. I have lived through the massacre every day. Our country may forget this history, but I cannot.” With this proclamation, I commit to the survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre, including Viola Fletcher, Hughes Van Ellis, and Lessie Benningfield Randle, the descendants of victims, and to this Nation that we will never forget. We honor the legacy of the Greenwood community, and of Black Wall Street, by reaffirming our commitment to advance racial justice through the whole of our government, and working to root out systemic racism from our laws, our policies, and our hearts. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 31, 2021, a Day of Remembrance: 100 Years After The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. I call upon the people of the United States to commemorate the tremendous loss of life and security that occurred over those 2 days in 1921, to celebrate the bravery and resilience of those who survived and sought to rebuild their lives again, and commit together to eradicate systemic racism and help to rebuild communities and lives that have been destroyed by it. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fortyfifth.” JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

The Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma was once called the “Black Wall Street,” a 35-block radius in the segregated community that was thriving with hundreds of businesses.

But, on May 31 through June 1, 1921, the entire area was burned down as a white mob attacked the community after a Black man was accused of assaulting a white woman. White residents burned down homes and businesses, killing hundreds of Black residents and injuring 800 others. Despite it being one of the worst instances of racial violence in the United States, the massacre was mostly swept under the rug. Although the Tulsa Race Massacre occurred 100 years ago, the community never fully recovered. Businesses were never able to rebuild, and innocent families were not compensated for the losses caused by the mob. Although there are estimates regarding the casualties that occurred during the attack, officials have been working for more than a year to find all of the victims. A breath of Spring

Spring came with all the splendor of a bursting roman candle cherry blossoms painted the countryside with every hue and we were sure the cold had left… at least for now but even as we watched this miracle a sudden freeze did strike the blossoms down withonesharp icyblast! Help Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green bring our revolutionary cancer treatment out of the laboratory into hospitals!

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.®, the first African American collegiate Greek-letter organization, establishes a historic partnership with a tech-based cancer nonprofit, Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, to raise cancer awareness and save lives. In July 2019, at the 95th Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® General Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., the Board of Directors voted unanimously to partner with the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation to save lives and change the way cancer is treated. The goal of the partnership is to raise cancer awareness and funding for human clinical trials. “Everyone has a loved one, or knows someone, fighting this disease. Too many have been impacted and too many lives lost, but this is an opportunity to change that outcome. The more than 200,000 members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® are honored to be the first Greek-Letter organization to join forces with the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation in this fight to save lives,” said Dr. Everett Ward, 35th President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® Nationally recognized cancer researcher, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, has developed a cancer treatment that completely eliminates tumors in mice in just 15 days after one treatment, without any observed side effects. She founded the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation to ensure this treatment will be affordable and accessible. “I thank Dr. Ward and the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® for joining our efforts. It takes a lot of courage to be the first and take action on a vision, to go beyond hope. This is a testament to their leadership and commitment to our families, our community, and our future.” said Green. Learn more and Donate: https://oralee.org/alphas/ MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

Message from the Health and Wellness Committee

Greetings Brothers, Men’s Health Month is observed during the month of June with Men’s Health Week highlighted June 14-18, 2021. The goal of Men’s Health Month is fo encourage men to take control of their health and lives by incorporating healthier lifestyle choices. Per statistics cited by the Office of Minority Health, a man’s life expectancy, on average, is 5 years shorter than that of a woman, with major causes of death attributed to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries and accidents. The Men’s Health Network (www.menshealthnetwork.org) has additionally designated June 18, 2021 as “Wear Blue Day”, focusing on the importance of men’s health. The Office of Minority Health has designated five central themes for men’s health, entitled “Five Plays for Men to Stay on the Top of Their Game”. These areas of interest include: • protecting your heart: making healthier food choices by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into the diet (example, 50% of plate consisting of fruits and veggies). • exercise: a minimum of 30 minutes daily. • prevention: through regular medical check-ups for health maintenance, including colonoscopy, blood sugar, blood pressure, prostate, optometry/ophthalmology, and dental health. • smoking cessation: understanding the untoward effects of smoking on the body (heart disease, stroke, erectile dysfunction). • mental health: maintaining a healthy mind, limiting stress, seeking professional assistance, when needed; self care and resiliency.

PUMP UP THE BLUE. Be a part of Wear BLUE. Where you Live – Work – Pray – Play Show your support for the men and boys in your lives. #ShowUsYourBlue National Wear BLUE Day is celebrated the Friday of Men’s Health Week!

Emerging from the blight of this global pandemic, we are cognizant of the stressors that our physical, emotional, and spiritual health have endured. As societies reopen, as we prepare to reintegrate socially, let us take control of all aspects of our health so that we may continue to enjoy the gift of Life. Fraternally, Brother Alvin L. National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week

Journey of Prostate Cancer – Preparation & Support Date : Saturday, June 19, 2021 Time: 9:30am – 11:00 am Location: YouTube and Zoom (Zoom link will be sent to registered attendees to participate)

As men, we often wait longer than we should to visit our doctors. As black men, early screening for prostate cancer can make a world of difference in our outcomes. Understanding our numbers as early as possible can help with diagnosis or preparation for potential changes in our prostate health. Join us for a discussion with three prostate cancer survivors – from three weeks to ten years – and how they prepared for their journey of living life post treatment. Topics will include family support, nutrition, education, exercise, and other forms of support.

Message from the Brother’s Keeper Committee Greetings Brothers, I want to extend a grateful thank you to Brother Joseph Housey for answering the call on the Brother Holbert project. Brother. Housey went to Brother Holbert’s home and completed the yard cutting project for our Brother’s Keeper Program. Brother Housey demonstrated the Fraternity Motto “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.” We must strategically awaken our minds to serving our senior community. One day, we will all become senior Brothers of the Chapter. I recently had a conversation with Brother A.J. Jones and Brother Larry Sanders about the transcending of the House. Recently, I did an

age demographic strategical analysis on the Brother ages in Mu Lambda. Our senior Brother’s represents 45% of the House. Brothers in my age bracket between 40 and 60 years of age represent the next highest level. At 41% are Brother’s in the age range of 25 to 40, making them 14% of the House. Within the next 5 to 10 years, Brothers in the age group between 40 and 60, with about five years away, will move closer to the Senior Bracket. So, here is a reality check. Brothers, we must not only get back to the work of Alpha; it’s time to begin to reopen the House and have more strategical conversations with the openmindedness of transcending the Chapter. If not, we will surely miss the opportunity to move Onwards and Upwards towards the Light. I pray that this message share light on the Transcending, for without Transcending, there’s no “Alpha.” Thanks once again, Brother Housey! Brother Carlos DeBose Brother’s Keeper Committee Chair

Greetings Brothers of Alpha, I’m writing to report on the status of the Fraternity’s Jewels Heritage Project (JHP). In 2010, at the 95th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, the General Body of the Fraternity voted overwhelmingly to establish the Jewels Heritage Project (JHP). In addition, the General Convention authorized the mission of the JHP to “Reclaim, Restore, and Revive” two historical sites in Ithaca, New York, that were instrumental in the founding of the Fraternity: 411 E. State St. (where Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded) and 421 N. Albany St. (the first meeting place of the Social Study Club). The JHP intends to accomplish the three-stage mission in two phases: first, we will build a monument at 411 E. State St. and second, we intend to acquire and restore the residence at 421 N. Albany St. Since 2010, the JHP has reached many milestones. Some examples include: • Obtaining historic landmark designation for 421 N. Albany St. • Collaborating with the City of Ithaca to compel the owner of 421 N. Albany St. to restore the exterior of the residence • Creating a design for the monument at 411 E. State St. • Engaging an engineering firm to build the monument at 411 E. State St. • Securing a pledge from the owner of 411 E. State St. to give the property to JHP for free

However, there is more to be done. In Phase I, we seek to complete the monument at 411 E. State St. in two years. We estimate that it will cost about $1.5 million to build the monument and another $2.5 million to maintain it (for a total cost of $3.6 million). Our first milestone is to raise $250,000 by the Fraternity’s 96th General Convention and 115th Anniversary Convention in Indianapolis, IN in July 2021. This money will go towards the $1.5 million required to build the monument. We will, of course, seek contributions to build the monument from other individuals and entities who support the preservation of African American history. But first, we must demonstrate our commitment. Below, we provide suggested donation amounts, but larger donations would greatly increase our ability to achieve our goal. April 1, 2021 Campaign Kick-off Alumni Brothers: $190.60 - College Brothers: $19.06 Alumni Chapters: $1,000 - College Chapters: $250 To make tax-deductible donation as a one-time payment or recurring payment online, visit: www.jewelsproject.org Or by mail: Make a check payable to the Jewels Heritage Project, Inc., and mail to: The Jewels Heritage Project, Inc. 2313 St. Paul St. Baltimore, MD 21218 We invite you to watch our video launch as well as follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates to our campaign. GEORGIA SENS. JON OSSOFF AND RAPHAEL WARNOCK SECURE $84 MILLION IN HBCU FUNDING by Jeroslyn Johnson, May 25, 2021 Fort Valley State Provost Ramon Stuart praised the funding initiative after his school received $11,937,555 in grant money. Warnock, a Morehouse College alum, stressed the importance of HBCUs to the state’s economy and culture.

Georgia Sens. Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock came together to secure $84 million in funding to the state’s local HBCUs. The two US senators announced the funding on May 13 as part of the American Rescue Plan, The Atlanta Voice reports. To help families struggling due to the economic setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, at least half of the funding must go directly toward grants for student aid. The American Rescue Plan includes $350 billion in emergency funding for state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, the U.S. Department of The Treasury reports. After President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law in March, Ossoff and Warnock were at the forefront of urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to allocate funds toward HBCUs.

“THE LEADERSHIP OF THESE INSTITUTIONS WILL HAVE SIGNIFICANT DISCRETION AND FLEXIBILITY,” OSSOFF SAID DURING A MAY 7TH PRESS CONFERENCE AT CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY. “WITH RESPECT TO THE INVESTMENTS THAT THEY WANT TO MAKE IN FACILITIES OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND TECHNOLOGY, BECAUSE THE LEADERS OF THESE INSTITUTIONS KNOW BEST WHAT THEY NEED. WE DID ENSURE IN THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT, HOWEVER, THAT A FULL HALF OF THIS FEDERAL SUPPORT MUST GO TO DIRECT ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS.”

“Our hardworking students have had to navigate the public health and economic challenges of the ongoing pandemic for the past year, and this critical support from the federal government is an important hand up that will help them pursue their education, strengthen our state’s workforce, and keep our economy moving forward,” Warnock said. “I cannot wait to see how this funding will help our HBCUs and their students excel today and into the future.” “Our hardworking students have had to navigate the public health and economic challenges of the ongoing pandemic for the past year, and this critical support from the federal government is an important hand up that will help them pursue their education, strengthen our state’s workforce, and keep our economy moving forward,” Warnock said. “I cannot wait to see how this funding will help our HBCUs and their students excel today and into the future.” Warnock, a Morehouse College alum, stressed the importance of HBCUs to the state’s economy and culture.

“WE WANT TO THANK OUR LEGISLATIVE PARTNERS IN WASHINGTON D.C AND THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF GEORGIA FOR THE SUPPORT,” STUART SAID. “WITH FUNDING LIKE THIS, NOT ONLY FOR FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY, BUT THE OTHER HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, THIS PLAYS A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN HELPING US KEEP EDUCATION AFFORDABLE.” Link: https://www.blackenterprise.com/georgia-sensjon-ossoff-and-raphael-warnock-secure-84-million-in-hbcu-funding/

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE BECOMES FIRST BLACK WOMAN IN 30 YEARS TO HOST DAILY WHITE HOUSE PRESS BRIEFING By Allie Malloy and Caroline Kelly, CNN Updated 3:09 PM EDT, Wed May 26, 2021

(CNN) White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday became the second Black woman in history to hold the daily press briefing Wednesday, saying that while she appreciates the "historic nature" of the moment she also acknowledges that the White House is not about "one person." "It's a real honor to be standing here today," Pierre said of being the first Black woman in 30 years to brief reporters from the James S. Brady briefing room. "I appreciate the historic nature. I really do," Jean-Pierre added. "But I believe that ... being behind this podium, being in this room, being in this building is not about one person. It's about what we do on behalf of the American people."

Judy Smith, who was a deputy press secretary under President George H.W. Bush, was the first Black female White House spokeswoman to hold a daily press briefing in the briefing room in 1991. Jean-Pierre was among the all-female White House senior communications team that the Biden administration announced in November. The seven women, several of whom are women of color, occupy some of the most visible roles in the administration. Pierre also thanked President Joe Biden for giving her the opportunity, saying that “clearly the President believes representation matters.” “This is not about me. This is not about any of us,” Jean-Pierre added. “And anytime I’m behind here, and I think you’ve heard Jen (Psaki) say this as well -- we are going to be truthful. We are going to be transparent as well.”

Jean-Pierre, a former senior adviser to Biden’s campaign who later served as chief of staff to Kamala Harris, was previously under consideration to become White House press secretary, a role that went to Psaki. Prior to that, Jean-Pierre worked for former President Barack Obama’s and Martin O’Malley’s presidential campaigns and served as a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC. She came to the press team with connections in activism following her role as chief public affairs officer at MoveOn.org and on the campaign for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Initiative. Cauliflower Sweet Potato Burgers with Avocado and Sriracha Aioli (Vegetarian Paleo)

This sweet potato burger recipe is packed with roasted cauliflower, topped with avocado and sriracha aioli, and is gluten-free, vegetarian AND Paleo! To shave time off the total for these burgers, make the patties in advance and chill overnight (or up to 2 days) before cooking. INGREDIENTS • 1 small head cauliflower 1 1/2 pounds, cut into small florets • 1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces • Sea salt • Olive oil • Ground cumin • 1/3 cup almond flour • 1 large egg beaten • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 tablespoon cilantro • Zest of 1 lime • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 2 avocados mashed • 1/2 cup sriracha mayo • 6 burger buns or bibb lettuce cups for the truly Paleo • Sprouts optional, for serving DIRECTIONS • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. • On a parchment-lined baking sheet, toss the cauliflower with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin and 1/2 teaspoon salt. On a second parchment-lines sheet pan, toss the sweet potatoes with 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Transfer the pans to the oven and roast until the veggies are lightly browned and caramelized, about 30 minutes, switching the pans from top to bottom halfway through. • Transfer half the sweet potatoes and all the cauliflower to a food processor or blender and pulse until a coarse paste forms, with still a few chunks of cauli. Set aside in a large mixing bowl, along with the remaining sweet potatoes, almond flour, egg, chili powder, cilantro and lime zest. Fold the mixture together until well-incorporated. • Form the mixture into 5 or 6 thick 3-inch patties and set aside on a plate. The mixture will be rather sticky. Refrigerate for 20 minutes uncovered, until the burger mixture is cool and firm. • Meanwhile, make the condiments: in a small mixing bowl, mash the avocado with the lime juice and a generous pinch of salt until coarsely combined. • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. • Heat a large non-stick skillet over a medium-high flame (see note). Add a thin layer of olive oil. Add the veggie burgers (3 at a time) and cook until the top has set, about 3 minutes. Flip the burgers and continue. These are going to feel very mushy at this stage, so if they’re misshapen after you add them to the pan, and/or after you flip, just use a silicon spatula to gently nudge the sides back into a round patty shape. • Transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet with the buns, cut-side up, and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. • While the burgers toast, prepare the sriracha mayo (if you haven’t premade). • Top each bun with a burger, followed by the avocado mash, mayo and sprouts. Serve alongside the remaining sauce. Brother Derrick A. Butts MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
