The President’s Message Greetings Brothers, Without being hyperbolic we find ourselves and the nation at the end of the most consequential election seasons of our lifetimes. Regardless of the outcome of the elections up down the ballots one of the glaringly obvious things that stands out aside from the lengths taken by fellow citizens to obstruct the rights of other citizens, is the need for voter or rather political education of the masses. To have the right to vote and use it but not understand the purpose, significance, follow up work and ramifications of exercising this hard fought right to vote will lead us once again down the same set of paths we are now attempting to rectify holistically. So now that “election season” is over, it’s voter education or civics lessons time from now till the next election season – 2022. So our work ahead of us Brothers or the “tion” is not only voter resgistra-“tion” but voter educat-“tion”. Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message

Auditing Vacant

Greetings Brothers of Mu Lambda.

Brother’s Keeper Carlos DeBose

Brother President has made mention of the importance of the consequential 2020 Presidential election, on Tuesday Night, the results whether changing or steady, will not be the end of the road for political activism. We are to remain ever vigilant in our duties as ALPHA MEN, to invest in the future of our nation for our young black sons, grandsons, male family members and other generations who will look at this moment in history as an opportunity to be taught. I want to encourage our chapter to think beyond Tuesday Night! Teaching the impact of all levels of elections is an important facet of civic engagement - from the ANC Boards all the way to the Senate, too many young persons are disengaged from the entire political process and are falling victim to “systematic failures”, due to their lack of understanding. We must continue our political activity beyond the 2020 polls! The conversation does not rest at presidential elections.

Mental health has been a rising issue in the political and local scenes, as news agencies cover the killings of young black men in our streets. A critical part of our speaking about the importance of Civic Engagement and exercising your rights, is also being able to help in the creation systems to support the black communities and the mental health disparities it faces. Weeks ago yet another young afroamerican man was shot 10 times in the middle of the streets of Philadelphia by two police officers. Calling the police should not be a 50/50 death sentence - Owning a Legal Firearm as an African American should not lead to your death - Defending the security of your home should not leave us grasping for life! Ask yourself, what do you get when we combine covid anxiety, seasonal depression, good ol’ fashioned regular depression from life circumstances, and the stress of one of the most important elections in the history of most of our lives? - Though rhetorical, the reality is there is a high chance that cases of mental health episodes are going to increase over the next few months. From domestic abuse, to manic depression. This also increases the probability for 911 calls to be made, and my hope is that it does not lead to the death of anyone reading this message. Brothers we need to ensure that if we are not OK, that we are comfortable enough to reach out to each other, there is nothing to be ashamed about. We are to continue to be our brother’s keeper. I hope only to grow our brotherly bonds and ensure we have a network that we can rely on, as many political and judicial systems have proven to fail us - Black men living in America. In the essence of brotherly bonding and with a switch of gears, I would like to extend gratitude to my line brother Karl Bruce, 12-ML-13 for encouraging and organizing a voter registration campaign the last two weekends in South East D.C. His efforts do not go unnoticed. I would like to also like to continue to thank and encourage all of the members of the Executive Board of the Chapter, for their continued efforts to adapt and achieve in the midst of these unprecedented times. We have been discussing the execution of a MU LAMBDA Alpha Week 2020, on the week of November 30th - Dec 4th. A month away, I hope brothers save the dates as many of these will be VIRTUAL events, and continue to support the efforts and events of the chapter! Let us make this a November to Remember! ATLANTA, Oct. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -Greenwood has secured $3 million in seed funding from private investors as the first digital banking platform for Black and Latinx people and business owners. Greenwood features best-in-class online banking services and innovative ways of giving back to Black and Latinx causes and businesses. Greenwood's founders include: Michael “Killer Mike” Render, Ambassador Andrew J. Young, civil rights legend, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and former Mayor of Atlanta • Michael Render, aka Killer Mike, rapper and activist in Black financial empowerment • Ryan Glover, Greenwood Chairman and founder of Bounce TV network “It’s no secret that traditional banks have failed the Black and Latinx community,” said Ryan Glover. “We needed to create a new financial platform that understands our history and our needs going forward, a banking platform built by us and for us, a platform that helps us build a stronger future for our communities. This is our time to take back control of our lives and our financial future. That is why we launched Greenwood, modern banking for the culture.” “Today, a dollar circulates for 20 days in the white community but only six hours in the Black community,” said Michael ‘Killer Mike’ Render. “Moreover, a Black person is twice as likely as a white person to be denied a mortgage. This lack of fairness in the financial system is why we created Greenwood.” Greenwood’s executive leadership includes: • Aparicio Giddins, President & Chief Technology Officer (previously of Bank of America and TD Bank) • David Tapscott, Chief Marketing Officer (previously of Green Dot and Combs Enterprises) • Andrew “Bo” Young, III, Board Member (managing partner, Andrew Young Investment Group) • Dr. Paul Judge, Board Member (co-founder of Pindrop and TechSquare Labs) Greenwood Financial continued on next page

Customers who invite their friends to open accounts receive cash awards as a thank you from Greenwood. All deposits are FDIC insured by a partner bank. Additionally, Greenwood plans to work with brick and mortar minority-owned backs to provide deposits to help strengthen historically black banks. “The work that we did in the civil rights movement wasn’t just about being able to sit at the counter. It was also about being able to own the restaurant,” said Ambassador Andrew Young. “We have the skills, talent and energy to compete anywhere in the world, but to grow the economy, it has to be based on the spirit of the universe and not the greed of the universe. Message from the Health and Wellness Committee “Movember” Greetings Brothers. I pray that you and your families are fairing well and staying safe as we continue to fight through the public health crisis caused by the COVID19 pandemic and the climate of political and social unrest related to this year’s presidential election and persistent racial injustices experienced by people of color. The unexpected life changes that we have all experienced in 2020, have caused levels of stress, anxieties, and uncertainties that we have never before experienced. To this end, we should all take a moment to pause, for introspection, and attend to our own self-care. We were all devastated just weeks ago at the passing of the Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, from metastatic colon cancer. Death is no respecter of age and is the one factor that levels the playing field for us all. Global statistics demonstrate that men, on average, have life expectancies 6 years less than women. In other words, we die 6 years earlier than women from causes that are often preventable. The month of November, termed “Movember”, for growing one’s mustache in November, is dedicated to men’s health, highlighting awareness of prostate and testicular cancers, as well as mental health and suicide prevention. Originating in Australia in 2003, this movement has gained global recognition, and is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health with the aim to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.

health. Giving oneself permission to be vulnerable to discuss one’s mental pain and distress, is, perhaps, the first step in achieving mental wellness. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of men in the United States. It is diagnosed at an earlier age and typically at a more advanced stage in many African-American men, who also often have more aggressive disease. It is expected that 1 in 9 men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. There are approximately 3 million men in the United States living with prostate cancer today. Testicular cancer is a cancer most commonly found in younger men. Performing testicular self examination, palpating for any irregularities in the testes, is a preventative intervention for testicular cancer screening. Family history of testicular cancer, particularly in a first degree relative, a father or a brother, is a risk factor for developing this disease. As we enter the month of November and approach the Thanksgiving holiday, let us all have a posture of gratitude for God’s providence and sustaining power through these challenging times. For more information on “Movember”, go to: www. us.movember.com To your health and wellness. Salut!

Fraternally submitted, Bro. Reaves, III

Studies suggest that, on average, globally, one man dies every minute of every day from suicide and in the United States, men account for 3 of every 4 suicide related deaths. Acknowledging mental health distress or crisis has been taboo in our society and even more so in the African American culture. It is imperative to recognize the influence of mental health on one’s physical NOVEMBER 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17

INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp Olive oil • 1 tsp Paprika • 1 tsp Sea salt • 1/2 tsp Black pepper • 8 Bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs • 1 Shallot, minced (about 1/2 cup) • 1 1/2 cups Chicken broth, separated • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp Cold butter • 2 tbsp Lemon juice • 1 tsp Freshly chopped tarragon, plus more for garnish • 1/4 cup Capers • 10 cups Kale, stems removed, roughly chopped • 1 13.5 oz can white cannellini beans DIRECTIONS • In a large skillet or braiser with a tight fitting lid heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium/high heat. • In a small bowl mix together paprika, salt and pepper. Pat the chicken thighs dry and season them generously with the paprika mixture. • Place the thighs, 4 at a time, skin side down into the pan. Allow the skin to brown (about 4-5 minutes) then flip them and continue to cook for 3 more minutes. • Remove from pan, set aside. Repeat the process with the remaining thighs. Once the chicken has been removed, add the shallots to the pan and cook over medium heat until just tender. • Add 1 cup of the chicken stock to the pan along with the dijon mustard. Bring to a simmer, stirring to scrape up brown bits and incorporate ingredients. Continue simmering until sauce reduces to about 1 cup and thickens enough to lightly coat the back of a wooden spoon.

Remove from heat and slowly whisk in cold butter. At the is point the sauce will begin to thicken like the photos show above. Once the butter is incorporated add lemon juice, capers and tarragon. • Add the kale and white beans to the pan and toss until greens are lightly coated with the sauce. Add the chicken back to the pan, tucking each thigh into the greens. • Drizzle the remaining broth over the entire dish, cover and return to low heat. Braise the mixture over low heat for 30 minutes. While the dish is just fine as is, we like our skin a little crispy. If you want to take the extra step for good crispy skins, place the entire dish under the broiler for 3 more minutes, or until skins start to bubble. Serve over mashed potatoes or a bed of creamy polenta. Enjoy! https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipeideas/a28484111/easy-stuffed-acornsquash-recipe/

White Teen Gets Four Years In Juvenile Custody For Plotting To Kill Black Georgia Churchgoers The bishop said instead of being a place of worship, their church has become an armed sanctuary. Blavity Team by Blavity Team October 23, 2020 at 5:53 pm

Update (October 23, 2020): The 16-year-old white teen who was charged with plotting to kill Black churchgoers in Georgia was sentenced to four years in juvenile detention on Thursday. Caitlyn Pye, a high school student, was charged back in November 2019 with criminal attempt to commit murder after her peers discovered a notebook detailing her plot to kill members of the predominately Black Bethel AME Church in Hall County, The Gainesville Times reported. She had previously attended the church twice for bible study with knives before the discovery of her notebook. During those visits, the services were canceled, and no one was present at the church, WSB reported. A judge sentenced Pye to serve four years at a Department of Juvenile Justice facility, 10 years of probation and counseling. She will stay in juvenile custody until she is 21 years old.

During court, Pye read a statement apologizing for her actions, saying she was “truly sorry for what I’ve done.” “I am very sorry. I want to let you know it was a mistake,” she said. Bishop Reginald T. Jackson read an impact statement about the shooting. “Our churches, rather than being places of worship, study and fellowship, have now become armed sanctuaries, where we have to have security in order to feel safe,” he said, adding that he hopes the sentencing provides Pye an opportunity to receive the resources and help she needs. She was also ordered to refrain from contacting any AME churches in the state and is required to stay at least 150 yards from their buildings. During the time the notebook was discovered, school officials searched her book bag and found a t-shirt that read “Free Dylann Storm Roof” with swastikas on each arm. “On the back of the shirt were several writings including, ‘I’m not crazy I had to do this,’” assistant district attorney Julia Greene said. “’I had to do it because somebody had to do something, because Black people are killing White people every day on the streets. What I did is still minuscule compared to what they’re doing to White people every day. I do consider myself a White supremacist.’” Roof executed a mass shooting at a historically Black AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015. Nine people were shot and killed during the attack, as Blavity previously reported. continued on the next page

Plotting To Kill Black Georgia Churchgoers continued

Since the shooting in Georgia, the church has spent more than $8,000 on security measures including changing the locks, upgrading their surveillance system and hiring police. Original (November 19, 2019): Georgia students may have prevented a possible attack on a Black church after turning in a peer’s notebook to school administrators. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports an unidentified 16-year-old white girl plotted an attack on the majority Black Bethel AME Church in Hall County, Georgia. The details of the attack were kept in a notebook that was brought to the attention of school officials who then went to the police. The girl also began building a knife collection, but it’s not yet been established how she intended to execute the killings.

June 2015. Nine were killed in the tragedy. Roof was 21 years old at the time and chuckled while confessing to the massacre. The bowl-shaped haircut he wore during the shooting was recently added to the database of hate symbols as fellow white supremacists began wearing the style in camaraderie with Roof. He is now sitting on death row. On Tuesday, Gainesville Police posted a press release stating the girl was in custody. In the statement posted to Instagram, police said they were notified by Gainesville High School Friday of the student’s detailed plans to kill at the church. “Our investigation indicated the church was targeted by the juvenile based on the racial demographic of the church members,” Police Chief Jay Parrish said in the release. “The church was immediately notified of the incident by Gainesville police to ensure the safety of our community and the current threat was under control.” “This is an active investigation and a prime example of how strong relationships between the student body, school administration and law enforcement can intercept a potentially horrific incident,” the chief concluded. She’s been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and is currently being held at the Gainesville Regional Youth Center. The incident is disturbingly reminiscent of the mass shooting carried out by white supremacist Dylann Roof at Charleston, South Carolina’s, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in NOVEMBER 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 26

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
