OUR CHAPTER

Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

FIRST OFFICERS

The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message

Greetings Brothers and Happy Charter Day,

On October 1, 2022 we celebrated the 99th anniversary of the chartering of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc Mu Lambda Chapter in Washington DC. Almost 100 years old the 111th House of Alpha has a storied history contributing to the betterment of our host city, the United States at large and for beloved fraternity.

In “The History of Alpha Phi Alpha A Development in College Life” authored by Brother Charles Wesley, (charter member of Mu Lambda, past Mu Lambda chapter president and the 14th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha), there is a chapter titled “The Crowning Years”. It is during this era in our Fraternity’s history that Mu Lambda was charted. How fitting that our chapter would be chartered during this pivotal time in Alpha’s history. The contributions delivered through the individual works of the Brothers that called Mu Lambda home and the collective work of the Brothers as a chapter is commendable.

We are leaders in all forms of endeavor. Setting the example. Blazing the trail. Ruffling feathers, challenging each other and others. And from what I am seeing looking ahead we will continue to do so for another 100 Years.

So I raise a metaphorical toast to the Brothers of Mu Lambda past and present. A toast to honor our 22 charter members, which includes Jewel Nathaniel Allision Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle. A toast to you all.

Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President 2022 - 2023

MU LAMBDA Community Service Projects 2022

ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC, MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

MU LAMBDA IN SERVICE

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter kicked off the fraternal year by organizing a community beautification project in Southeast DC. On Saturday, August 27 the brothers of Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter met at Ballou Senior High School in Ward 8. Brothers picked up trash in the parking lot, the football field, and around the high school campus. After the high school campus was cleaned, brothers continued to pick up trash on 4th Street SE and Mississippi Avenue SE.

The beautification projected ended with brothers picking up trash at Charles Hart Middle School. The following Monday, August 29, the brothers of Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter returned to Ballou Senior High School and Charles Hart Middle School to greet students on their first day of school and distribute school supplies. The brothers of Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter were recognized by Ward 8 council member Trayon White for their hard work and dedication to service.

Additionally, the Ward 8. Brothers got to interact with the farm staff and various members of the community while tilling the gardens and planting seeds. With the rising prices of inflation and food prices, it is essential to teach members of our community how to grow their own food. In two hours, brothers tilled and replanted most of the gardens on the farm, which saved the farm staff weeks of work. In

addition to recognition received by the farm staff, the brothers of Beta Chapter and Mu Lambda Chapter also received national recognition for their hard work from Watch the Yard on Instagram. The successes of these community service events highlight the impact that the Mu Lambda Chapter has on the DC community. The Mu Lambda Chapter is making great progress in our goal to increase its presence in Southeast DC, as well as the other three regions of DC, as we step into our centennial year in 2023.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Breast cancer occurs mainly in women, but men can get it, too. While breast cancer in men is rare, it does happen. Fewer than 1% of all breast cancers are diagnosed in men. Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer and can spread to other areas.

National Statistics:

The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2022 are:

• About 2,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed

• About 530 men will die from breast cancer

• Results showed that rates of breast cancer were 52% higher in Black men than in white men:

• 2.75 per 100,000 Black men were diagnosed with breast cancer

• 1.81 per 100,000 white men were diagnosed with breast cancer

Risk Factors:

It’s not completely understood what causes breast cancer in men, but researchers have found several factors that may increase the risk of getting it. As with female breast cancer, many of these factors are related to your body's hormone levels.

• Aging: on average, men with breast cancer are about 72 years old when they are diagnosed.

• Family history: risk is increased if other members of the family have had breast cancer. About 1 out of 5 men with breast cancer have a close relative, male or female, with the disease.

• Inherited gene mutations: a mutation (defect) in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have an increased lifetime risk of 1 in 100 to 6 in 100.

• Klinefelter syndrome: a congenital (present at birth) condition that affects about 1 in 1,000 men.

• Radiation exposure: chest area treated with radiation (such as for the treatment of a cancer in the chest, like lymphoma) has an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

• Alcohol: heavy drinking

• Liver disease: liver disease can also have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

• Estrogen treatment: used in hormonal therapy for prostate cancer; slightly increases breast cancer risk

MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022 | 16 ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC, MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

RISK FACTORS CONTINUED...

• Obesity: fat cells in the body convert male hormones (androgens) into female hormones (estrogens), causing higher levels of estrogen.

• Testicular conditions: having an undescended testicle, having mumps as an adult, or having one or both testicles surgically removed (orchiectomy) may increase male breast cancer risk.

TERIYAKI SALMON w/FRIED RICE Health and Wellness Committee

Fitmencook.com (Kevin Curry)

Ingredients for 4 hearty servings

1 lb raw wild salmon filets

3 tablespoons teriyaki sauce

spray avocado oil (or olive oil)

4 eggs, lightly beaten

1 tablespoon avocado oil

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger

1/3 cup finely chopped green onion

3 cups cooked (cooled) brown rice

best if leftover from a day or 2 prior)

1 (red) bell pepper, diced

1 cup frozen peas & carrots

3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce

2 teaspoons sesame oil (optional but

Garnish

fresh cilantro STEPS

1. Set oven to 420F.

2. Place salmon filets in a bowl with teriyaki sauce and marinate for at least 20 minutes (or even overnight).

3. Set a nonstick skillet/wok on high heat. Once hot, spray with oil then add the salmon, face down. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the top is seared and caramelized, then flip over and place the filets on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Bake in the oven for 8 to 12 minutes. Once finished, remove from the oven and flake the flesh with a fork.

4. Wipe the skillet clean with a paper towel, reduce the heat to medium-heat, spray with a little more oil, then add in the beaten eggs. Chop up the eggs as they cook in the skillet. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

5. Add oil, garlic, ginger and green onion to the skillet. Cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes and reduce the heat if necessary so the onion does not burn.

6. Add the cooked, cooled rice and mix everything together. Cook for 1 – 2 minutes, then add the eggs. Chop up the eggs finely as you mix everything together.

7. Gently fold in the flaked salmon, then add the frozen peas & carrots, along with soy sauce.

8. Remove from the heat and continue to mix to thaw the veggies.

9. Add sesame oil and garnish.

Keeping our city clean & green

Residents, businesses, and the government all play a role in keeping DC clean, safe, and healthy. Only by involving all residents and each community can we create a District as beautiful as we know it can be.

Success begins with one neighbor and one community deciding to make a difference. Anyone can participate: individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools and other groups and organizations.

• Improved quality of life in your neighborhood. The appearance of our community contributes to the quality of life we all share.

• Signs with your group's name letting people know you are committed to making a difference.

• Meet your neighbors, strengthen your community connections, and build leadership skills. Become a role model to youth.

• Litter-free, more active communities help discourage rodents and unwanted and illegal activity.

• Increased economic development. An attractive, clean community is a great asset in attracting new businesses, jobs, and customers.

Greeting Brothers,

The 2019-2022 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.

Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.

We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.

Esprit de Fraternite

Brothers,

It is that time of year again.

The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st.

Mu Lambda’s 2022-2023 fraternal year runs September 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. The chapter does not meet during July and August.

It is now time to pay your 2022-2023 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.

Ways to make payment:

1. You can pay your dues on mulambda.org by clicking the dues tab at the bottom left of every web page.

2. Bring a check to the chapter meeting.

3. You can pay on the Mu Lambda App

4. Mail it to:

Financial Team Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
