The President’s Message

SEPTEMBER MESSAGE

Dear Distinguished Mu Lambda Brothers,

As we step into the beautiful month of September, I am filled with both excitement and gratitude. It’s a time when the colors of autumn begin to paint the world around us, and it’s also a time when we, the members of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, come together with renewed vigor and purpose.

As we embark on our centennial year, marking a remarkable 100 years of service, leadership, and excellence, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to each and every one of you. Our journey has been one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the principles of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind.

I encourage each of you to continue being active participants in our chapter and the broader fraternity. Your involvement and engagement are the lifeblood of our organization. Let’s not rest on the laurels of the past but strive to create an even brighter future for Mu Lambda.

In this special year, let us remember the core values that have defined us for a century – to be fraternal, amiable, kind, and committed to our mission and vision. Let’s foster a spirit of unity and brotherhood that strengthens our bonds and uplifts our community.

This September, as the leaves change and nature transforms, let us too undergo a transformation, deepening our commitment to Mu Lambda, Alpha Phi Alpha, and our shared mission. Together, we will write the next chapter of our storied history with pride and excellence.

Welcome to a September filled with promise, fraternity, and the celebration of 100 years of Mu Lambda’s greatness. I look forward to the incredible journey ahead with each one of you.

Vice President’s Message

SEPTEMBER MESSAGE

Greetings to the Men of Distinction of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter,

We have arrived! Our centennial year is just around the corner, less than a month away. Thinking back 30 years to the Spring of 1993 when I embarked on my Alpha journey fills me with nostalgia. It was during this time that I was first introduced to The Mighty Mu Lambda Chapter, serving as the advising unit for Beta Chapter. Whether it was receiving invaluable guidance from our then Alpha Advisor, the esteemed Brother Leroy Lowery, or sitting in neophyte wonder at our chapter meetings, Mu Lambda Chapter has played an indispensable role in shaping my journey as an Alpha Man.

Our year is already off to a fantastic start, marked by an outstanding turnout at the General Convention, a successful retreat, our representation at the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, and cheering on the next generation as they begin their school year.

I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve as your Vice President this year and am excited to work closely with each one of you.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly for any reason whatsoever. Together, let’s raise The Light of Alpha high this year!!

06!!!!! 23!!!!!!”

Fraternally,

Celebrating a Century of Excellence: Mu Lambda’s 100th Anniversary

As we stand on the precipice of a momentous occasion, I find myself filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. This September, we mark a significant milestone in the history of our beloved Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. – our 100th anniversary. It is with immense joy and reverence that I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who has supported us on this remarkable journey.

On October 1st, 1923, 22 distinguished men of Alpha Phi Alpha came together with a shared vision and a boundless determination to create Mu Lambda Chapter. They laid the foundation for what would become a thriving fraternity chapter, and their legacy endures to this day. We owe an eternal debt of gratitude to these visionary pioneers who paved the way for us to carry forward the torch of leadership, scholarship, and service.

Over the past century, Mu Lambda has grown, evolved, and contributed to the fabric of our communities in countless ways. We have made a profound impact on the lives of those we’ve served and mentored, and we have consistently upheld the principles of our fraternity – Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind.

As we approach our centennial celebration, I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our dedicated brothers, alumni, friends, and supporters who have played an integral role in our journey. Your unwavering commitment, sacrifices, and passion for our fraternity

have helped shape Mu Lambda into the extraordinary chapter it is today.

To our active brothers, thank you for your tireless dedication to the principles of Alpha Phi Alpha and your commitment to uplifting our community. Your hard work and determination continue to drive our chapter forward, ensuring that the legacy of Mu Lambda remains strong and vibrant.

To our friends and supporters, your encouragement, partnership, and shared values have been invaluable to us. Your belief in our mission and your willingness to stand with us in our endeavors have been a source of inspiration.

As we gather to celebrate our centennial during the last week of September and officially mark our charter day on October 1st, let us reflect on the rich history of Mu Lambda and the incredible journey that has brought us to this moment. Let us honor the legacy of those 22 distinguished men who had the foresight to establish this chapter, and let us rededicate ourselves to the principles and ideals of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Our centennial celebration is not just a commemoration of the past but also a promise for the future. It is a commitment to continue the work of our founders, to strive for excellence, and to be leaders, scholars, and servants of all mankind. Together, we will ensure that Mu Lambda remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.

In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support of Mu Lambda. Together, we have made history, and together, we will shape the future. Let us celebrate this remarkable milestone with pride, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Yours in Brotherhood,

AN URGE FOR REPARATIONS TRIBUNAL

Bro. Daniel Mushala

Bro. Justin Hansford has been appointed by President Biden to the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD). On May 30 , 2023, Brother Hansford called on the United Nations to set up a reparations tribunal and explore options to offer some type of “justice” to Black Americans for slavery.

While presenting at the PFPAD, Brother Hansford said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech lays out the argument for reparations, but the speech has been “distorted, sanitized and drained of its true radical vision.” “Despite that, I believe we can now safely say that Dr. King’s assertion that the U.S. Constitution was a promissory note, which came back marked insufficient funds for its Negro citizens, was both accurate and ominous. The truth is, Dr. King believed in reparations. He called for it explicitly up until the last speech of his life. The promissory note, the check that he demanded, according to the terms of the U.S. Constitution, was never cashed. And 60 years ago, until today, the wealth gap between African Americans and White Americans remains exactly the same,” he said in his address.

“So 60 years later, it is up to us to now acknowledge him as the visionary he is, because after all of these years, it is now clear, more clear now than ever before that reparations is what justice looks like in the 21st century.”

Brother Hansford pointed out the existence

of at least two legal principles that could apply to reparations.”Crimes against humanity governed by the Rome Statute of the

International Criminal Court adopted in 1988 is, one, perhaps interesting legal concept that we could apply to what happened to our people. Genocide determined by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted by the

General Assembly in 1948, shortly after the Holocaust is another interesting legal claim that could be brought."

“ I come to you today with a novel proposal that we begin to think our own thoughts, propose our own vision of justice, and implement that justice as part of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent,” he said. “I also propose today that we create a new bar association, including lawyers and non-lawyers, to discuss what it means to be prepared in 2023 for crimes that have been done to us and are continuing to be done to us for over 500 years.”

Hansford went on to express his desire for the PFPAD to establish a “new community of legal thinkers that is not limited to lawyers but includes anyone who is passionate about justice.” & “And we come together and demand that many of the states in this room that have benefited from the legacy of our oppression start the process of apology and reparation, but not on their terms, but on our terms” he concluded firmly.

Biden nominated Hansford to join the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD), where he will serve until 2024.

On Campus Advisor to Beta Chapter, Bro. Dezmond Evans

Assistant Alpha Advisor to Beta Chapter,

The school year for Howard University has just started up, but Beta Chapter’s has already been hard at work with programming for the Howard University and DC community.

On the First Tuesday of the School year, August 22nd, Beta chapter continued the tradition of passing out yellow roses to the female population of Howard University to welcome them back to campus.

On Thursday August 24th, The Bros of Beta represented Alpha Phi Alpha at a National PanHellenic Council social for all Divine 9 Organizations of Howard Campus and gave the students of HU the opportunity to meet and talk to each of them.

On Saturday August 26th, Beta Chapter (along with all other DC chapters in the Area) participated in the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington.

On Friday September 1st, The brothers held their first ever “Phirst Friday Fish Fry” at the black owned Fishscale near Howard’s campus. The event acted as a fundraiser and promotion for the black small business.

On Tuesday September 5th, Beta Chapter offered free professional headshot photos on Howard University’s Main Yard to any Howard Student that needed them for networking purposes.

This is just the beginning, with plenty more programs and events on the horizon for Beta Chapter this school year.

IAAM & MU LAMBDA

Mu Lambda Brother plays a pivotal role in the grand opening of a historic museum

Brother James R. Morgan III Spring 2023

On June 24, 2023, the International African American Museum (IAAM) opened its doors in Charleston, South Carolina. This worldclass museum was initially proposed by former Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. in the year 2000 in an effort to tell the story of the city’s importance as a primary arrival point for enslaved Africans into what became the United States of America. By the year 2002, a steering committee was formed with Congressman Jim Clyburn at the helm and by the year 2008, the services of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners were officially engaged with Moody Nolan as the Architect of Record. In the year 2014,

newly arriving Africans.

Scholars estimate that roughly half of all Africans who arrived in what is now the United States arrived via the port of Charleston, making this site a sacred location for such a historic project. By the year 2019, the city of Charleston was chosen as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage site with the International African American Museum serving as the marker location for this high honor. Ground was broken on the site on October 25, 2019, before a joyous public crowd.

As part of the IAAM’s dedication to innovation and service to the African Diaspora community, the museum received funding to establish a Center for Family History within its walls. This center was envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility where patrons would be able to gain access to rare documents and learn the latest strategies for researching family and community histories.

In the year 2022, Brother James R. Morgan III, was hand-picked as the International

MU LAMBDA TORCH 2023 | 19 ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC, MU LAMBDA CHAPTER HISTORY
BUILDERS

Ms. Toni Carrier. While much work had been done already to establish the Center for Family History as a viable entity, much responsibility was placed on Morgan’s shoulders to see this aspect of the project through to fruition.

Prior to the museum’s opening, Mr. Morgan secured major donations to the museum, to include a large book donation to help fill the library shelves within the facility as well as some important technological donations as well. Mr. Morgan also played an important role in curating art and artifacts that have been purchased and placed on display by the museum as well.

It should not be lost on readers that Mr. Morgan completed the process for membership into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity while employed with the International

African American Museum. As an aspirant to membership, Mr. Morgan found inspiration in notable Alpha men of the past such as Mu Lambda Chapter’s own Dr. Charles H. Wesley and William L. Hansberry.

As the International African American Museum has a particularly close affiliation with the Gullah-Geechee community of South Carolina and Georgia, Mr. Morgan found a particular affinity for Beta Chapter initiate Dr. Lorenzo Dow Turner, who is considered the father of Gullah Studies. With his contribution to the International African American Museum, Brother James R. Morgan III hopes to add his name as another link in the chain of men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity who have contributed to the reclaiming of African and African American historical memory.

National Atrial Fibrillator Awareness Month

AFib is a condition where your heart’s upper chambers beat out of sync with the lower chambers. This creates an abnormal heartbeat that is often rapid but can also be too slow or irregular. AFib puts you at increased risk for heart failure, because of the extra strain on your heart, and for a stroke, due to potential blood clots.

Symptoms that a person may experience include:

• Irregular heartbeat

• Heart palpitations (skipped beats)

• Shortness of breath

• Fatigue

• Weakness

Those who are most at risk for AFib include people with a family history of atrial fibrillation, existing heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, or other chronic conditions including thyroid problems, sleep apnea, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or lung disease.

TO HELP YOU PREP YOUR HOME FOR GUEST

Brother Daniel Mushala - Licensed Realtor

Summer is winding down, and autumn is just around the corner, signaling the approach of the holiday season. Are you prepared to host friends and family in your home? While it may feel like there is a lot to tackle, don not worry. Here is a checklist to help you get everything in order before your guests arrive!

1. Clean and Declutter: Start by thoroughly cleaning your home. Dust, vacuum, mop, and make sure surfaces are wiped down. Clear away clutter from common areas and guest rooms to create a welcoming and tidy environment.

2. Make space: Clean out the dressers and closets in the guest room(s) to ensure that your friends and family will feel comfortable and at home.

3. Plug it in: Make sure that all of your appliances are in working order. The last thing you need with a house full of guests is a broken dishwasher or washing machine!

4. Baby-proof: If your house is not already baby-proofed and if small children will be coming to stay or visit, take a little time to ensure that electrical outlets are safely covered, sharp edges are padded, and that valuable knick-knacks are out of harm’s way.

5. Light your fire: Make sure that your fireplace and chimney are clean and in working order. Gathering around the fire with friends and family is a cozy way to spend time reminiscing and chatting.

6. Stock Essentials: Stock the guest bathroom with essential toiletries such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, and toilet paper. Consider leaving out some extra items like toothbrushes and toothpaste, just in case your guests forgot something.

7. Prepare a Guest Information Sheet: Create a sheet with important information such as your Wi-Fi password, instructions for using the TV or any other electronics, and emergency contact numbers. This will help your guests feel more at ease.

8. Kitchen Access: If your guests will be using your kitchen, make sure it is wellstocked with basic essentials like coffee, tea, sugar, and creamer. Clear some space in the refrigerator and pantry for their use.

9. Entertainment Options: Provide some entertainment options, such as books, magazines, or board games, in case your guests have some downtime and want to relax.

10. Knock Knock: Take a walk through your home and inspect all doors and windows. If the doors, hinges or latches are sticky or squeaky, make any necessary repairs before your guests arrive. This will ensure privacy for them AND for you!

Additionally, do not forget to communicate with your guests in advance to ask about any specific needs or preferences they may have. Being attentive to their needs and making them feel at home will create a memorable and enjoyable visit for both you and your guests.

I hope this list is helpful for you, and please give me a call at 240.328.4634 if you need any additional information or about real estate in general!

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.

The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.

The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?

As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.

Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

Greeting Brothers,

The 2019-2023 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.

Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.

We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.

It was totally voluntary. You were not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. Harris, Jr. our National Historian and author of Volume II has participated in the sessions, and all sessions are chaired by our own Bro. Ryle Bell.

MAI TAI

Ingredients

What’s in the original Mai Tai? Despite what you might think, there’s no pineapple juice! There’s actually no fruit juice, other than lime juice. The classic Mai Tai cocktail is on the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails, meaning that it has an “official” definition. The ingredients in a Mai Tai drink are:

• Aged rum (also called golden, amber or anejo)

• Orange liqueur: either curaçao, Cointreau or Grand Marnier

• Lime juice

• Orgeat syrup

• Dark rum

As a note, the classic Mai Tai ingredients also often include simple syrup. We prefer it with only orgeat syrup to capitalize on its special flavor to the fullest.

Mu Lambda Chapter

Alpha is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
