SCHOOLING OPTIONS CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE AS A PARENT. IN BAHRAIN, FAMILIES HAVE THE CHOICE BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS WHERE CURRICULUM VARY EXTENSIVELY. WE HAVE COMPILED A COMPREHENSIVE LIST TO HELP YOU AND OUR FUTURE STARS IN THE JOURNEY OF EDUCATION.

AGE AND STAGE

SCHOOLING OPTIONS

AGES 5 TO 6, KINDERGARTEN

From tried and true traditions to creative alternative education models, families in Bahrain have many schooling options to choose from.

This pre-school year is a structured program prior to starting formal education, where play-based development of early literacy and social skills is encouraged. AGES 6 TO 11, PRIMARY SCHOOL That is when children begin their formal and mandatory education. Primary schooling carries children from Year 1 to Year 6 in preparation for the Intermediate stage.. AGES 12 TO 14, INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

GOVERNMENT EDUCATION SYSTEM Education at a government school is available to all Bahraini and non-Bahraini children in the country from primary school to Year 12. There are no fees applicable, however some small payments might be required for uniforms and other miscellaneous expenditures. Fore more information: www.moe.gov.bh PRIVATE EDUCATION SYSTEM

This is the third cycle of basic education, covers students of 12-14 years old, and lasts for three years. The student is admitted to this level upon completion of the sixth grade of primary education. A subject-teacher system is applied at this level with educationally qualified teachers teaching each subject.

This pre-school year is a structured program prior to starting formal education, where play-based development of early literacy and social skills is encouraged. Fore more information: www.mumsinbahrain.net

AGES 16 TO 18, SECONDARY SCHOOL

MONTESSORI CURRICULUM

This level is considered as a continuation to the basic education and heralds a new phase for the student as it prepares him/her for higher education or a vocational career. Secondary education lasts for three years of six semesters at three levels. Entry is conditional on obtaining the Intermediate School certificate or its equivalent. Upon completion of this stage, students graduate receiving a High School Certificate that enables them to pursue a higher university level degree in the career of their choice.

Follows Dr. Maria Montessori’s very well known international curriculum. Montessori teaching encourages children’s natural love of learning and activity. It has found that children learn best in a warm, homelike environment filled with materials and exercises that promote growth of self-motivated independent learners. Fore more information: www.mumsinbahrain.net

The credit-hours system is applied at this level and provides a broad choice of subjects and courses. The system permits students to tailor programs that suit their future goals whereby the student has a choice to pursue a science curriculum, a literary curriculum, a commercial curriculum, or a technical curriculum. Students are able to change tracks depending on the commonality of courses spread among more than one specialisation.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of three required components which aim to broaden students educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills. For more information: www.mumsinbahrain.net

WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD

IN THE SCHOOL YEAR

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FOR PARENTS IS SEEING THEIR LITTLE ONES SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE. YOUR CHILD’S SUCCESS IS NOT ONLY A REFLECTION OF THEIR HARD WORK AND EFFORT, BUT ALSO OF YOUR PARENTING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

1

Chat with your child about starting school. What do they think it will be like? What are they most looking forward to? Is there anything they’re unsure or worried about?

2

Make sure your child gets enough rest and sleep. This allows them to do their best during the school day, by increasing concentration, learning skills and problem solving. Also remind your teen that sleep and rest can help reduce pimples and facial blemishes.

3 4

Ask your child about school and encourage them to talk about their school day. Open communication keeps you informed, and communicates that you care about your child’s experiences. If your child has a particular worry e.g. wetting themselves, not liking the food, or feeling ill, talk about these concerns with your child and with the class teacher. Provide reassurance by discussing what to do and who to tell in these situations.

7 8

Help with or check your child’s homework every night. Be accountable and ensure that your child is staying on task and completing all assignments. Encourage your child with a rewards and consequences plan. Outline incentives or rewards for good behaviour. Create consequences for negative behaviour. Make sure you communicate these clearly in advance.

9 10

If you have arranged childcare before or after school, talk this through with your child. If the childcare arrangement is new, try a settling-in period for this before the school term starts.

It’s natural to feel nervous about your child starting school, but remember that your child can easily pick up on your emotions. Try to be relaxed and positive, rather than showing your own nerves.

5 6

Stay involved and check in with your child’s teacher if you have concerns. To truly stay informed, speak directly to teachers and school staff. Don’t talk negatively about your child’s teacher or the school in front of the student. This tarnishes their image of school, reinforcing negative behavior and decreasing their motivation to do well.

BUILDING A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD by Lamar Kanafani, The first Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Bahrain

1. HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND WORKING WITH YOUR CHILD ON SELF-DISCIPLINE? Self-discipline is not a skill your child will achieve over a period of weeks or months. Teaching your children self-discipline is a process that takes years to achieve through the consistent use of a variety of effective parenting skills. One of these skills to utilize is called Active Listening when your child experiences a problem; this technique helps facilitate your children to solve their own problems. To allow children the opportunity to solve their own problems helps build their confidence level and trust in themselves so they learn to become more self-directed.

2. HOW DO YOU TEACH YOUR CHILD TO COMPROMISE?

You don’t want to teach your children to compromise more than you want to teach them how to negotiate fairly the solutions to a problem where everyone’s needs are met. When I cover this point in the PET course, parents usually ask me, “well, isn’t that the same thing?” Well, no it’s not. Compromise usually requires that one party relinquishes at least some of his desire to meet his needs to its full capacity in order to accommodate more to the other party. And quite often, one or all parties involved feel distrustful and worry that the other will not uphold their end of the bargain.

3. HOW CAN YOU LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN EFFECTIVELY?

The first step to being able to listen to your child effectively is to be able to acknowledge to yourself whether you’re able to put in the time and effort required to listen effectively in that very moment at that very place in that very state-of-mind you’re in. Without those prerequisites being met, you will not be able to carry out the necessary attitude of a genuine listener to your child or other. Listening effectively requires a combination of several skills (also taught in the P.E.T. course) which include: passive listening, active listening, determining problem ownership, defining needs, and being able to separate needs from solutions.

MORE INFORMATION: Marriage and Family Therapist Contact: 36 009 665 Email: lamar.kanafani@gmail.com

4. AS A PARENT, HOW SHOULD YOU TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN SO THEY LISTEN TO YOU? In order for your child to listen to you, you must first learn to listen to your child. Only then can they absorb better what you are trying to say to them. The “how to talk to your children” part of this process requires the use of several different kinds of I-Messages used in specific situations, and the use of problem-solving techniques where your children feel that their voice and position in the family matters.

5. HOW TO DEAL WITH CONFLICTS, SO YOUR CHILD WON’T SEE YOU AS AN ENEMY? First, a parent needs to be open and flexible enough to create a change in themselves: a change in the way they think, understand, and view their children and their behaviours. It also requires an undoing of many belief systems about parenting that we’ve acquired from our own parents, grandparents, other family members, friends, society, religion, culture, and the socalled “expert advice” books written about parenting.

YOUR CHILD

COMMUNICATION SKILLS LITTLE VILLAGE CENTER IS A CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER THAT PROVIDES HOLISTIC SERVICES FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18MONTHS - 12 YEARS WHO PRESENT WITH COMMUNICATION AND LEARNING DIFFICULTIES. MIB HAD A LITTLE CHAT WITH THE MANAGER OF THE CENTRE, SARA ALMAZ. SUPPORTING AND DEVELOPING THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

1. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE SERVICES PROVIDED IN YOUR CENTRE? Little Village Center is an Early Intervention Program that provides children with communication difficulties with a learning environment that caters for their individual developmental and educational needs. The aim of our Early Intervention Program is to gradually integrate our students into a mainstream school setting.

2. WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION PLAN? We individually assess children and create an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each child which is incorporated within the classroom environment. Children then carry out individual therapy sessions to meet the goals and objectives highlighted in their IEP.

3. WHAT IS YOUR SCHOLARSHIP

Contact: +973 38 292 331 Email: info.littlevillage@gmail.com Location: Juffair Website: www.littlevillagebh.com Instagram: @Littlevillagecenter

PROGRAMME?

Little Village provides a Scholarship fund that covers the cost of tuition and is specifically for students whose families cannot afford our Early Intervention Program. It is open for one student each year and whose families meet the financial criteria outlined in the application form found in our website.

4. HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND PARENTS COMPLEMENT YOUR WAY OF EDUCATION AT HOME?

Each week our team of therapists creates “Weekly Therapy Objectives” that outlines what the therapists have been working on with each child. These objectives are shared with the parents to give them a chance to work with their child at home to supplement the child’s learning.

5. WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SHARE TO HELP

PARENTS INTERACT EASIER WITH THEIR CHILD? 1. Always maintain eye contact when talking to your child. 2. Make sure you come down to their level. 3. Follow your child’s lead and engage in activities that they enjoy. 4. Encourage them to share when playing at home or in a familiar safe environment; this will help generalize the skill when they’re in nursery/school.

RAMADAN AND THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM By Dr. Mustafa Al Abdullah (Consultant – Gastroenterology) from Royal Bahrain Hospital

The Holy month of Ramadan is round the corner. So, it is very important for us to understand the concept of fasting and how best to utilize it to improve our health. To fast is good. Prophet Mohammad (BPUH) has said more than a thousand years ago:

DO FAST; YOU GET BETTER HEALTH.

In medical history, Hippocrates, one of the most outstanding figures in the field of Medicine, had recommended fasting in order to foster a healthier body while various religions incorporate fasting for spiritual cleansing. Recently, according to the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Science, fasting was found to have beneficial effects on heart health as well. It is thought that fasting causes our bodies to metabolize cholesterol and glucose in a better fashion while fasting. It was also shown that the level of LDL (bad) cholesterol would decrease and the level of HDL (good) cholesterol would increase while fasting. Additionally, it has been shown that our bodies have a higher number of circulating blood cells after fasting; thus, it is hypothesized that fasting increases healthier blood cells as well. Further, some of the illnesses of the digestive system are food related, so once you give rest to your stomach you will give more chance to increase the possibility of healing and improvement. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), which is one of the most common disease, has very positive outcome during Ramadan time, mainly if they have good and balanced meals in iftar and sahur times. However, it is important to eat the right foods so as to maximize the benefits. So, here are a few suggestions.

1. FIRST

Try to avoid simple carbohydrates and all “simple” starchy foods such as “sugary” foods including cookies, chocolates, ice creams, aerated drinks, etc. They result in early satiety but also sudden hunger afterwards.

2. SECOND Maintain a good balance - a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, proteins and fibres. A plate of salads, small portion of rice/bread and a bowl of chicken/meat/ legumes (for vegetarians) is a must during Ramadan and year-round health.

3. THIRD Drink plenty of water. Water washes away the excess nitrogen from the body found in protein-rich foods. But, avoid taking large quantities at a time. Try to space out to ensure your body is hydrated throughout the day.

4. FOURTH

Add diary products to your routine especially yogurt. Dairy products relax your digestive system, keep you satiated and will make you less thirsty. Yogurt also programs your body for fasting by preventing dehydration and allowing your digestive system to be healthier.

5. FIFTH Stay away from salty, spicy and fried foods, especially if you suffer from acid reflux as they will lead to excessive thirst.

6. SIXTH For Iftar, a bowl of yogurt, a small bowl of soup, maybe with few dates should be enough to momentarily satisfy you before you go for the main meal about 30 minutes later. Similarly, in Sahur, keep your food simple, balanced and nutritious. Avoid over eating which can lead to accumulation of fat. -RAMADAN KAREEM.

PROBLEMS BACKPACKS CAN POSE Dr. Amy Bowzaylo, DC, InTouch Integrated Chiropractic Spine Center

Although many factors can lead to back pain —participation in sports or exercise, poorposture, long periods of inactivity or excessive use of technology — some kids have back aches because they’re lugging around an entire curriculum’s locker full of books, schoolsupplies and personal supplies all day long. To know how a heavy backpack can affect your child’s body, it helps to understand how the spine works. The spine is made of 33 bones called vertebrae, and between the vertebrae are discs that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy weight, such as a backpack filled with books, is placed incorrectly on the shoulders, the weight’s force can pull a child backward. To compensate, a child may bend forward at the hips or arch the back, which can cause the spine to compress unnaturally and the child to be and move off-balance. Carrying a heavy pack changes the way kids walk, particularly on stairs or other places where the backpack puts the student off balance. Improper backpack use can also lead to poor posture. Girls and younger kids may be especially at risk for backpack-related injuries because they’re smaller and may carry loads that are heavier in proportion to their body weight. Kids who wear their backpacks over just one shoulder end up leaning to one side to offset the extra weight. Heavy backpacks with tight, narrow straps digging into the shoulders interfere with circulation and nerves. All of this leads to muscle strain, shoulder, neck and back ache and - worst of all - tingling, numbness, and weakness in their little arms and hands and increased risk of falls from poor balance. There are other safety issues to consider. Kids who carry large packs often aren’t aware of how much space they occupy when turning around or moving through tight spaces, such as the aisles of the school bus, sometimes hitting other children. Students & faculty are often injured when they trip over large packs or the packs fall on them.

INTOUCH RECOMMEND At InTouch we recommend convertible rolling backpacks, or carried backpacks in proportion to the size of the child. A good ergonomic backpack should be no larger than the child’s back. To simplify matters you can take two measurements off of a child’s back and use those for the max height/width of the backpack.

MOST IMPORTANT Chiropractors and Physical Therapists recommend that kids carry no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight in their packs. That means no more than 4kg for a 27kg child. A little time and a few simple steps can save your child from a lifetime of bad habits and pain. BOOSTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY CHILDREN ARE EXPOSED TO GERMS IN THEIR ENVIRNOMENT. RIGHT FROM BIRTH A CHILD’S BODY ADOPTS STRATEGIES TO DEAL WITH THEM, COLLECTIVELY CALLED THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.

The amazing piece of engineering is a complex maze of interconnecting organs and cells including the lymphatic system, spleen and bone marrow. The immune system is often described as an army, as there are so many forces working together to protect our bodies from disease by attacking unwanted intrudes such as viruses, or too many of the wrong kind of nutrients, may cause the immune system to function much less effectively.

SIGNS OF LOWERED IMMUNE SYSTEM

VITAMIN A Essential for growth, healthy skin, both enamel and good vision. Also boosts the immune system. You can find it in: Liver, oily fish, carrots, dark, green vegetables, orange and red fruit.

VITAMIN C

Sign of a lowered immune system can include: frequent colds and infection, slow wound healing, exhaustion after light excercise, dry skin and eczema, asthma, loss of appetite, white marks on nails, poor growth, pale skin, nausea, fatigue, mouth ulcers, plantar warts, molluscum, pimples on back of arms, poor sleep patterns and slow recovery from colds and infections.

Needed for growth, healthy tissue and healing of wounds as it helps to fight infection. It also helps in the absorption of iron. You will find it in: broccoli, sweet peppers, potatoes, spinach, cauliflower, citrus fruits, blackcurrants, melon, papaya, strawberries, kiwi.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BODY AND IMMUNE SYSTEM

Essential for proper bone formation, it works in conjunction with calcium . It is found in few foods, but is made by the skin in the presence of sunlight. You will find it in: oily fish, eggs, margarine, dairy produce.

If you want to strengthen you child’s immune system, keep the following points in mind:

Increase eating fruits and vegetables. We are all aware that at least five portions of fruit and vegetables are the key to maintaining a healthy immune system. Even if your child is not a fan of veggies, try providing him some of those products in a varied and interesting way (soup, pasta sauces with vegetables). Although fresh is best, you can also add dried fruit, frozen berries and vegetables, tinned fruit and baby purees to achieve the five-a-day goal. Limit sugar. Eating too much sugars, has a lot of impact on child’s immune system. Even though some of the nutritionists say that there is no harm in eating sugars, you should know the limits and try limiting them form your child’s daily menu. Remember that sugar is hidden in all sorts of foods, under various pseudonyms, mainly ending in ‘ose’. They include glucose, lactose, golden syrup, corn syrup, fructose and concentrated fruit juice. Drink plenty of water. Water is incredibly important for children and the proper hydration is one of the fundamentals of health and children who are frequently dehydrated are at increased risk of suffering from headaches and urinary tract infections. It is best to drink water throughout the day not only during the meals. When you are off to the park or a shopping trip, always remember to take a bottle of water for each child.

VITAMIN D

VITAMIN E Important for the composition of the cell structure. Helps the body create and maintain red blood cells. You will find it in: avocado, wheatgerm, nuts and seeds

CALCIUM Important for strong bones, good teeth and growth. You will find it in: dairy products, canned fish with bones (sardines), dried fruit, white bread, green leafy vegetables

IRON Needed for healthy blood and muscles. Red meat is the best source of iron. However, if combined with vitamin C- rich foods, iron absorption can be increased by about 30 percent. You will find it in: red meat, especially liver, oily fish, egg yolks, dried fruits, wholegrain cereals, dried beans, green leafy vegetables.

PREPARING AND PACKING

A HEALTHY LUNCH-BOX GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES AND MEALTIME IS NO EXCEPTION. PROVIDING YOUR KIDS WITH HEALTHY MEALS IS AS IMPORTANT AS PROVIDING THEM WITH THE RIGHT EDUCATION AS IT IMPROVES THEIR OVERALL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING.

LUNCHBOX TIPS Children are bundles of energy and need constant fuel to keep them going. A well prepared lunch box keeps your child active and happy at school. Make sure, you understand what your child likes to eat. With a quick plan, you won’t waste time every morning on thinking what should you prepare. Here are some tips from us, how to make it easier for you:

Weekday mornings are always a rush, especially if you are on your way to work, or there is a baby to feed, so get into the habit of preparing sandwiches and salads the night before and storing them, wrapped and ready in the fridge.

Put a sheet of kitchen roll in, to wipe sticky fingers and mop up any spills.

Keep a selection of different breads, ready-sliced, in the freezer, Remove only as much as you need for the day, to provide variety throughout the week, and to preserve freshness. Try granary, multi-grain, bagels, wraps, wholemeal pittas, seeded bread and rolls.

Fillings for wraps can be put into a separate little container or resealable bag to stop the bread going soggy, or fill a tortilla or chapatti with a variety of toppings, roll and and wrap tightly in cling film or foil.

You can also prepare batches of certain sandwiches (without salad), such as tuna, cheese, turkey and cream cheese, and freeze them, taking out what you require in the morning.

Keep the lunchbox varied and interesting, if you’ll keep inserting the same foods over and over, your child will get bored and stop eating.

Make the snacks small and handy. Between the ages of two and five, children are extremely active and, for some, sitting still long enough to finish one meal is a rare occurrence. For example cut some carrots or cherry tomatoes into a small box or a zip bag. It is better to give them several mini-snacks than one or two big meals.

40

Must have: lunchbox with separate spaces to place different foods, not too big to fit into the kid’s school bag, or take up most of the space, easily washed in the washing machine. Foil and zip lock bags might be useful.

MAKING MORNING EASIER

Children are also lazy when it comes to preparing food and will more happily pick up a biscuit than a whole apple. Therefore, you should cut apples into slices, peel and divide a satsuma into segments. Try having a bowl of cut-up fruit in the fridge so that everyone in the family is tempted to snack on it when they are looking for something tasty to eat. Write yourself a weekly menu, which removes the frantic last-minute rush to make lunch with whatever is in the fridge. If you know what you are going to provide for your child’s lunch you can ensure you add the ingredients to your weekly shopping list. WWW.MUMSINBAHRAIN.NET

BUILDING THE SHOPPING LIST

Check over all the ingredients needed for the meals, and start to list them on a shopping list next to the meal planner.

Choose a shopping day and make a shopping list. Having a list of go-to meals is one of the easiest ways to expedite the meal planning process. Consider trying one or two new recipes and use a few old favourites to fill in the gaps.

• • •

Prevent under-buying or over-buying by carefully working out ingredients that fall across multiple meals. If three onions are required for various meals, write onions x 3.. After the items needed for the meals are listed, start to add the other items normally purchased such as nappies, milk and bread. Keep a well-stocked pantry. Meals are easier and quicker to prepare if you keep your pantry well-stocked. Don’t run out of olive oil at inconvenient moments. Have spices ready to dress up chicken and beans quickly. Keep a lemon and a sheaf of fresh herbs in the fridge at all times.

O

LUNCHBOX PEER PRESSURE As your child gets older, there may be pressure from contemporaries to include all kinds of processed foods in his lunchbox. Not only are these expensive but they frequently provide empty calories, filling up small tummies but providing very little nutrition. They may be loaded with additives that could impact on your child’s concentration levels. Try talking to other parents and see if you can agree that none of your will provide these food for your children. If this isn’t possible, explain to your child that such foods are for occasional treats and not for everyday meals. Look for healthier versions of items such as savoury snacks, crisps and flapjacks at health shops.

FIND OUT WHY THEY’RE NOT EATING THEIR LUNCH Many schoolchildren bring their lunch home with them at the end of the day, which can be frustrating. There may be a variety of reasons why your child does not eat all the food in their lunch box. The following suggestions may be helpful:

The lunch box style – your child may have an issue with their lunch container. They might prefer a brown paper bag or want the latest fashion in lunch boxes to be like the other kids. It may be difficult for them to open.

Boredom – try to pack a different lunch every day. For younger children, cut the sandwiches in different ways to add interest: for example triangles, squares or strips. You could even use one slice of white and one slice of brown to make a ‘zebra’ sandwich.

Too dry – if they say the filling is too dry, try leaving a sandwich uncut. Some fillings like dips or peanut butter may stay fresher this way. If your child’s appetite seems small, offer smaller servings. For example, half a sandwich might be more appropriate than a whole one.

Fiddly and sticky – make sure the foods are manageable and easy to eat. Some children are put off by fiddly packaging or don’t like getting sticky hands. Fruit can be made easier to eat. For example, remove orange peel or cut a kiwifruit in half and include a spoon in the lunch box.

Make other meals count – if your child hardly eats anything from their lunch box despite your best efforts, try to at least ensure they have a nutritious breakfast and dinner. Trust that your child will eat when hungry.

SCHOOL POLICY Some schools have a policy against peanut butter in sandwiches, as peanut allergy can be extremly serious, and an allergic child may suffer a reaction from being near someone else’s peanut butter sandwiches. There are also some schools that ban all nuts and seeds on their premises. Find out what your school’s position is on this. Ask your child’s teacher if there are other foods that aren’t allowed in school. You may find that chocolate and crisps are banned, and this makes it easier to explain to your child why he doesn’t have them as part of his lunch.

DON’T EMBARRASS THEM Older children don’t like to suffer embarrassment when in the classroom, so pack familiar food which they are happy to eat in front of their friends.
