Most of the people in Bahrain prefer to buy bottled water, as it’s very cheap. many purchase a water cooler for use with five-gallon bottles as a convenient and economical solution, with water supplies delivering refill bottles direct to your door. Some suppliers provide prepaid coupons, so you don’t have to be at home when they deliver. You can just leave the empty bottle and a coupon outside your door. In Bahrain, cooking water is also available cheaper than drinking, but less treated and supplied by huge water tankers. If you want to test your water, the right number to call is Laboratory Services 17464402. They will test your water for around BD 70.

DOMESTIC HELP

DOMESTIC HELP ARE YOU A PRESON WHO’S CONSTANTLY STRUGGLING TO FIND REALIABLE MOVE OUT, MOVE IN HOUSE, CLEANING AND MAID SERVICES? WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER BEST MUMS RECOMMENDATION. The best method of sponsoring a maid is to hire a maid who already lives in Bahrain, looking for a new job. Another easy way to find a maid is to ask advices and recommendations on Mums in Bahrain Facebook Page. www.facebook.com/mumsinbahrain

The salary of a locally recruited maid would be slightly higher than an agency maid, but, as an employer, you will not have to incur any additional fee. As per our community mums, part time maid rate is 2BD per hour and some provide extra for transport.

SPONSORSHIP

SOFA & CARPET CLEANING

Agencies have different rate. Can be anywhere between 800 and 1100. But it also depends on the nationality, Filipino is usually more expensive. Salary is reasonable too. Most agencies say 90-110BD for no experience and up-to 150BD with experience. According to the law you have to provide them also medical insurance and one flight ticket back home every two years. Make sure the agency gives you the 3 month assurance too. You get to take them back within 3 months if anything goes wrong and you get most of your money back ( 10-15% deduction ) also there is a housemaid insurance now that states, if they runaway within the 2 years contract you get a certain amount of money back.

THINGS TO DO

THINGS TO DO ARE YOU BORED OUT OF YOUR MIND AND CANNOT THINK OF WHAT TO DO IN BAHRAIN? HERE ARE SOME IDEAS THAT MIB HAS PUT TOGETHER SO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY STAY ACTIVE AND PUMPED UP.

PARKS Khalifa Bin Salman Park, Probably the most well known park in Bahrain. Has two playgrounds as well as paddle boats and bicycles for hire. Hidd(Located off the highway.) Khalifa Al Kubra Garden, Across from Oasis Mall in Riffa. Opens 3pm - 9pm weekdays, 3pm - 11pm Thursday and Friday. Lovely green area with 1km loop walking, running track, multiple playgrounds and picnic spots. Riffa Budaiya Botanical Gardens, 300 fils entry. Take a meandering walk through the trees to the little lake at the far end. Farmers Market is held here on a Saturday morning 8am -12pm during winter months. A nice place for a picnic and a bit of greenery! Budaiya Dohat Arad Park, Found next to Movenpick Hotel. Large area with two playgrounds and restaurants. A 3km loop walking track goes around the lagoon. Most days you can spot herons and flamingos out on the water. One of the best places in Bahrain to stretch your (and the kids) legs. Muharraq The Country Club, Entry is 3BD or free if you plan on buying something from one of the restaurants. Not affiliated with any other clubs. Has a couple of playgrounds, petting zoo and horse riding available. Lovely big trees making it a nice and shaded area for the hot days! Budaiya Al Areen Wildlife Reservation Park, 1BD entry. Large area to walk around and explore with many different animals, some roaming free. Bus tour can take you to see the animals further out on the reserve in their more natural habitat. On the far side there is a lovely Japanese garden and a shaded playground.

FORTS

PUBLIC BEACHES

Riffa Fort, Free entry. The restaurant Saffron is located inside the fort and serves up a yummy traditional Bahraini breakfast (6bd for two). The fort gives elevated views over the valley and is well maintained. Riffa

Budaiya Beach, The cleanest of the old public beaches with a good swimming area for the kids and a working playground. A popular picnicking area. Budaiya

Bahrain Fort, Free entry. The most magnificent of the forts and a world heritage site. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore inside, with a loop track around the outside if you fancy a walk. Below the fort is a small museum and a cafe where it is nice to relax and enjoy the view, while the kids can play on the beach.. Seef Arad Fort, Entrance is 500 fils and can request a guide to give you a tour. One of the smaller forts but has some steps to climb and an old cannon at the top of the tower. There is a large grassy walking area beside the fort and if you follow this round you will reach a playground for the children. Fallen into disrepair but enjoyable nonetheless. Across from Seef Mall Muharraq Bu Maher Fort, To get to this fort you must go by boat leaving from behind the National Museum. Ticket is 1BD from the museum’s front desk. Boats leave every 15mins between 10am and 6pm. It is the smallest of the forts and has one small tower that you may climb if you are game enough to tackle the dodgy stairs! There is a visitor’s centre with an extensive model of the pearling trail and the old houses along it. Muharraq Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water, Al Areen 17 845 100 Wahoo Waterpark, Bahrain City Centre 17 173 000 Magic Island, Seef Mall 17 582 898 Bahrain Sience Centre, Isa Town 17 686 466

Al Jazaer Beach, The longest beach in Bahrain with a sand stretch for miles. There is some playground equipment dotted along the way. Is rather isolated, making it a good place to feel like you’ve escaped the city! (Past Al Areen) Marassi Al Bahrain, Bahrain’s newest beach and soon to become private. Make the most of it while you can. Clean sand, sparkling sea and a lovely new playground. Food trucks and free activities in the weekend. Al Diyar Island

EATING OUT

EATING OUT FROM RESTAURANTS, TO CAFES, TO CHOCOLATERIES, WE HAVE COVERED IT ALL FOR YOU. THIS IS A ONE STOP GUIDE FOR YOU TO DECIDE WHERE TO EAT.

Whether you live in or just on vacation in Bahrain and have picked up this guide and seeking some guidance to the region’s family friendly dining. The island certainly has the ingredients for a perfect foodie experience. Just because you have kids doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a nice dinner out. But the last thing you want is a stressful evening out trying to get the kids to behave long enough. And even if your kids are well-behaved (sure they are), do you really want to spend all of your vacation budget on food that they probably won’t eat anyway?

BREAKFAST

ON-THE-GO BREAKFAST

B

reakfast is brain food, but it can be a challenge to feed the kids healthfully and get out the door in time for school. These 6 simple on-the-go breakfasts will give your kids the energy to get through the morning—without sucking up your time, too.

DRESSED-UP YOGURT This is a quick

way to add sweetness and crunch to plain yogurt. You’ll get the nutritious benefits of yogurt without the excess sugar so often found in flavoured yoghurt.

(CONSULTANT – PULMONOLOGY)

“PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE” Asthma is a commonly occurring disease that affects many. Prevennon and long-term control is the key to prevennng aaacks.

Asthma

is a disease that affects the tubes carrying air in and out of the lungs. With asthma, the airways narrow, swell and produce excess mucus, which can cause wheezing, coughing, chest ghtness and breathing difficulty – especially early in the morning and at night. “It is not yet clear why some people get asthma and others do not, but it is most likely due to a combinaaon of environmental and geneec (inherited) factors,” says Royal Bahrain Hospital’s pulmonology specialist Dr. Maria Teresa Catacutan“

“Asthma triggers differ from one individual to another. Common triggers include house dust-mites, animal fur, pollen, tobacco smoke, exercise, cold air and chest infeccons.”

Symptoms are a minor nuisance for some, but a major problem for others, interfering with their daily accviies. In life-threatening asthma aaacks, the airways can close so much that your vital organs do not get enough oxygen; which could lead to death. Unfortunately, asthma cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be controlled. Treatment includes avoiding asthma triggers, using long-term control medicaaons to prevent flare-ups and using a quick-relief inhaler to control symptoms once they start.

Diagnosing asthma can be difficult and to rule out other possible condiions, your doctor will perform a physical examinaaon and take your medical history. You may also need to undergo lung funccon tests. Determining the severity of your asthma will help your doctor choose the best treatment for you. “Treatment usually involves learning to recognise your triggers and taking steps to avoid them,” says Dr Catacutan. “Use of asthma medicaaons will keep symptoms under control. In case of an asthma aaack, you may need to use a quick-relief inhaler such as Salbutamol or Albuterol.”

Fill plenty of salad such as tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, beetroot, carrot, rocket, peppers, onion - any combination is ideal. Wholemeal wraps make also a fun alternative to sandwiches; use your favorite sandwich fillings of course. Keep a selection of breads in the freezer for emergencies. You can take out two slices of frozen bread in the morning to make a sandwich. To avoid soggy sandwiches, make sure you use dry ingredients. It’s important to wash lettuce, but dry it before putting it into the sandwich.

There are a few other tips you can employ to help your sandwiches stay dry. Instead of regular tomatoes, you can use cherry tomatoes, which have a lower water volume. Wet condiments like pickles and roasted red peppers? Keep them on the side.

MEAL PLANNING

MEAL PLANNING HELPFUL HINTS FOR SAVING MONEY IN THE KITCHEN.

MEAL PLANNING..? I must admit that once thought it was a waste of time.. Sitting in front of a piece of paper and plan the menu for the whole week seemed ridiculous. What has changed? I grew. I had to adapt to the new pace of life and to adapt to my new financial status as well. With planning, cooking for a few days and freezing saved up a lot of time. Seriously. And the extra time is a real luxury. Who today has it in excess ?

WHY PLANNING? •

It saves time

It saves money

It gets the family involved

It helps with the family organisation

It encourages nutrition

It avoids unnecessary waste

It forces you to eat healthier

It makes you shop more efficiently

It makes you enjoy variety

HOW TO PLAN? One way of saving and not wasting food is meal planning . On the Internet you can find many ways to plan a menu . Some are good, but none of them fit my lifestyle. However, there are some basics that everyone should know. Thanks to them you will be able to independently plan meals.

1

Spend time each week looking for recipes. This may feel like an indulgence, but just let yourself do it. Browse blogs and websites for recipes that look delicious.

38

2

Create a place to save recipes, and keep it SIMPLE. Do whatever works for you. Don’t get caught up in a system, just use whatever works best and most easily.

3

Start a calendar. Now that you’re getting inspired in what to eat, start a calendar of what you’d like to cook over the next few days or few weeks. It can be as organized as a Google Calendar, with notes on each day for that day’s menu. Or you can just jot notes to yourself in the corner of your laptop screen. Other options are: Plan to eat www.plantoeat.com or Chef Tap cheftap.com

4

Go with theme nights (soup night, pasta night, beans). Some readers found it really helpful to have a theme night each week. Monday is pasta, Tuesday is fish, Wednesday is tacos. This doesn’t work for everyone, but it may be especially helpful for those with kids.

5

Choose a shopping day and make a shopping list. Having a list of go-to meals is one of the easiest ways to expedite the meal planning process. Consider trying one or two new recipes and use a few old favorites to fill in the gaps.

6

Check what’s on sale. Take advantage of special offers and discounts. Check out your grocery store circular and adjust your meal plan or shopping list a bit.

7

Keep a well-stocked pantry. Meals are easier and quicker to prepare if you keep your pantry well-stocked. Don’t run out of olive oil at inconvenient moments. Have spices ready to dress up chicken and beans quickly. Keep a lemon and a sheaf of fresh herbs in the fridge at all times.

GAME CHANGING ADVERTISING

OTHER HELPFUL SAVING TIPS The utility bill that can often cause the most pain (and surprise) would have to be the electricity bill. It’s so easy for the electricity bill to sky-rocket when energy saving practices lag in the home.

If you don`t like what the competition is saying, change the conversation.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

PACKAGES STARTING LIGHTING - Replace standard bulbs with LED energy saving bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are more energy-efficient than regular bulbs, while giving off the same amount of light. - Select light-colored lamp shades. Place lamps in corners so they reflect light from two walls.
