It’s important that you give your child a healthy, balanced lunch to take to school. The information below gives some helpful tips for putting together a healthy, interesting lunchbox with plenty of variety.

The good news is, variety doesn’t have to be complicated, a little, thought and planning, can go a long way. If you’ve run out of ideas for making nutritions, interesting lunches for your little ones, here are some easy tips to add more variety.

1. Sandwiches: Using a different type of bread each day can make lunchboxes more interesting. Try to keep a selection of breads in the freezer for sandwiches. Then you can just take out what you need for one day’s lunchbox and defrost it on a plate or in the microwave. You could try granary, wholemeal and raisin bread, multi-grain and seed rolls, mini wholemeal baguettes, bagels and wholemeal pitta.

64

2. Salads: In the summer, salads are light and

refreshing and full of essential vitamins and minerals. Try to include a variety of ingredients, such as grated carrot, spinach, tomato, sweetcorn, tuna, avocado or dried fruits.

3. Pizza: Home-made pizza is also a great choice

for lunchboxes. On the pizza base, put a tomato and basil sauce/paste, mozzarella cheese and plenty of chopped vegetables, such as peppers, onion, mushrooms and sliced courgettes. You could also make a mini pizza using a wholemeal muffin cut in half and topped with vegetables or ham. Toast this under a grill for a couple of minutes for a fun and different snack.

4. Drinks: Always include a drink to keep your

child hydrated and help him/her concentrate.. You could also add a fruit smoothie made from natural yoghurt, mixed berries and maybe a dash of honey, or even a home-made milkshake.

5. Hot and cold: If you haven’t already, invest in

a small hot-food container to double your lunchbox options! Leftovers served hot are particularly nice in the colder months, and your child will feel spoiled with spaghetti, fried rice, a curry or a hearty casserole at lunchtime!

6. Get inspired: For a constant supply of ideas, follow Facebook pages or websites that share lunchbox photos and recipes.

7. Add something new: Rather than preparing something entirely different, simply add an ingredient or two to old favourites.

8. Rotate the protein: Protein is often con-

sidered the main part of the meal, and there are many options here. Use sources of protein such as beef, chicken, turkey, fish (tuna, smoked salmon), eggs, cheese, beans and legumes in rotation to include a wide variety of foods in your child’s lunchbox.

9. Rotate the fruit and veg: A healthy eat-

er is one who eats a wide variety of fruit and vegetables. The possibilities here are endless! Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices are great, but there is so much more on offer. Keep trying different fruit and veggies at home until you know your child will eat them in the lunchbox. Don’t stop at raw veggies – try roast potatoes, pumpkin or beetroot (great as a snack!) or marinated olives and gherkins..

10. Plan weekly: Writing a weekly lunchbox

menu might seem like more work, but spending 10 minutes to think and plan your meals can get your creative juices flowing. It will help you balance your meals throughout the week and think of different combinations.

C H I C K E N K E BA BS W I T H P EA N UT SAU C E This is a must for any peanut butter lover! Chicken kebabs make for an easy, healthy snack or meal and food on skewers is fun! Kids will love the yummy peanut sauce.

MARINADE

SAUCE

1 garlic clove, crushed 1 ½ tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tsp peanut butter (smooth or crunchy) 4 chicken breasts cut into long strips

1 tbsp vegetable oil ½ onion, finely chopped ½ tsp crushed dried chillies 100g crunchy or smooth, peanut butter 75ml coconut milk 75ml water You will also need 8 wooden or bamboo skewers

Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade. Flatten the chicken, cover with cling film and carefully bash it with a rolling pin. Cut each breast lengthways into 4 or 5 strips. Marinate the chicken for between 15 and 30 minutes. Soak the skewers in cold water for 20 minutes - this stops them from burning or charring when cooking.. To make the peanut sauce, heat the vegetable oil in a pan and sauté the onion and chillies (if using) for 4 minutes. Add rest of the ingredients (including sweet chilli sauce if using). Bring to the boil, stirring, then cook for 2 minutes until thickened. Pre-heat the grill. Thread the chicken strips onto the skewers and grill for about 4 minutes each side, turning occasionally. Serve 2 skewers each with some of the dipping sauce.

O

n your first appointment at the hospital, you would have been handed a long list what you should pack in your hospital bag for B-Day. This list is packed away until you reach the latter stages of your pregnancy and you suddenly realise that you really need to get your bag ready. Then, when you start looking at the various bits you need, the reality of giving birth really hits home! It’s exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure! To help make the job a little easier we’ve answered some of the most common questions about packing your hospital bag, and supplied you with a definitive list for you and baby.

WHEN SHOULD I PACK MY BAG? It’s never too soon to be prepared, and it’s recommended that you have some sort of basic bag packed by the time you’re 32 weeks pregnant, or earlier if you’re expecting twins or are considered highrisk. Mums who end up in hospital earlier than expected stress the importance of being prepared lists given to partners or family only go so far!

18

HOW MUCH SHOULD I BRING?

WHAT ABOUT THE MAIN BAG

This is a bit of a balancing act. Make sure you have everything you need, but don’t overpack, as maternity hospitals are usually fairly crowded places and there’s little storage space. Many mums recommended bringing the minimum of clothes for you and for baby, and then making sure that extras are in a convenient place at home, so your partner can bring them in as needed.

Bring a carry-all or case the same size as hand luggage for a flight. This can contain the basic for you and for baby. Handy things to include are a few packs of newborn vest and sleepsuits for your baby. It’s quite common for new babies to spit up a lot, so you might find that you go through a lot of these in the early days!

WHAT ABOUT A LABOUR BAG? It’s really good idea to pack a separate bag for the labour ward. This should contain one to two button-down nighties (be prepared to throw these away, as they may get destroyed!), a light dressing gown, slippers, socks, big knickers in a dark colour, maternity pads, a dark towel, a bottle of water, snacks, a hair bobbin and a camera. Include a see-through plastic bag for the baby, containing a vest, sleepsuit, hat, scratch mittens and nappy.

A couple of newborn hats and scratch mittens are also essential. Bring one pack of nappies and have a couple of packets stored at home to be brought in as needed.

GOING HOME Remember that you and baby will need clothes to wear when going home. Pack a bag with your clothes and your baby’s first outfit and put it with the car seat (another essential!) for your partner to bring into the hospital when it’s time to go home.

WHAT I wish I HAD

packed

• Decent shampoo and shower gel

• Jacket or snowsuit for winter babies • Muslin squares

• Big fluffy towel

• Lots of baby blothes

• Breast pump

• Breastfeeding pillow

“I Wish I had packed a separate labour bag and gone through it with my partner. Just having the first nappy and baby clothes in a handy compartment even would have saved a lot of stress (and a little bickering) when our baby was born.” Olivia, mum to Ben (2) and Isabella (1)

“FOOD!

And lots of bottled water. Some people breeze through labour in a few hours, but if it’s your first, pack for a long wait. You might not need it, but there’s nothing worse than being in the early stages of labour, in a sweltering hospital in the middle of the night with no water or snacks to keep you going!”

“One tip that I got after I had my baby that I wish I knew beforehand was to pack a nice shower gel and some travel toilletries. That first shower after you give birth is wonderful and a really nice shower gel would have helped me feel a bit more human and special.”

BABY AND CHILD IMMUNISATION GUIDE Here is a checklist of the vaccines that are routinely offered to everyone in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the ages at which they should ideally be given.

If you are not sure whether you or your child have had all your routine vaccinations, ask a practice nurse to find out for you. It may be possible to “catch up” later in life. Try to make sure you or your child have vaccinations delivered on time to ensure protection. If you are going to be away from the GP surgery when a vaccination is due, talk to your doctor. It may be possible to arrange for vaccination at a different location.

IMPROVE YOUR SMILE

Gone are the embarrassing days of unsightly braces. Now with invisible ones, you’re secret is safe and you can smile with confidence.

The general perception of dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, is that they are only used to align or straighten teeth. However, they also help to improve your bite and dental health at the same time Braces are often used to correct malocclusions like underbites, overbites, crossbites, open bites, deep bites and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. “Braces are required to correct the position of the teeth, aiding in achieving a better smile, reducing food impactions and gum infections. They are also often used in the correction of jaw positions,” says Royal Bahrain Hospital’s Orthodontist Dr Rajeesh Radhakrishnan. “If left untreated, these problems can result in tooth decay, gum disease, headaches and earaches as well as speaking, biting or chewing problems.” Patients with orthodontic problems can benefit from treatment at nearly any age. An ideal age for getting braces is between 10 and 14 years but braces aren’t just for kids, as more and more adults are also wearing them to correct minor problems and to improve their smiles. No matter what your age, orthodontics can protect your bite (occlusion), maximize your teeth’s effectiveness in performing their functions and create a well-aligned smile. Today’s orthodontics involves repositioning of the teeth and underlying roots, providing better support for the crown of the tooth. Orthodontic treatment is now associated with

24

the benefits of greater aesthetic appeal, increased comfort and reduced treatment time. So, here are a few suggestions. Dr. Rajeesh of Royal Bahrain Hospital explains: “CLEARPATH ALIGNERS ARE REMOVABLE MEDICAL GRADE PLASTIC APPLIANCES. THEY’RE COMPLETELY INVISIBLE, REQUIRE LESS TIME IN THE DENTIST’S CHAIR, SHORTER APPOINTMENTS, ARE REMOVABLE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY’RE MORE COMFORTABLE THAN THE TRADITIONAL ALTERNATIVE.” “WE DESIGN THESE BY USING X-RAYS AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF TEETH TO CREATE THEM. IN FACT, WE USE THE MOST ADVANCED COMPUTER PROGRAMS TO SHOW YOU BEFORE THE TREATMENT BEGINS HOW THE SMILE WILL TURN OUT!” Most adults tend to shy away from orthodontic treatment, mostly because of the common perception that braces are for children. “Now at the Royal Dental Studio, we offer concealed or lingual as well as clearpath invisible braces that are well hidden from the sight of others. Only you and your dentist would know that they are there,” says Dr Radhakrishnan. RBH is offering a 15% discount on all Orthodontic braces during the month of September. Call the Royal Dental Studio at 17 246 800 or visit www.royalbahrainhospital.com for booking and more information.

It is our philosophy that in the early stages of development, children will learn through their senses: their eyes, ears, touch, taste and smell. It is through the process of sensory messages that a child will be able to develop concepts, thinking processes and reasoning, and ultimately, abstract thinking. This is why Mommy Wellness offers visitors with the service of a play den. While mommy is being pampered at our day spa, we’ll keep your children busy with activities and learning through play.

BACK ON THE MOVE O S T E O P AT H Y

Lana D. Peters, BSc(hons) Ost. Med., Do,ND., gained her Osteopathic qualification at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and has been self-employed as an osteopath for the past 28 years, practicing in the United Kingdom, Australia and now in the Kingdom of Bahrain, where through the latter she has developed a deep understanding of patient needs across a diverse range of cultures.

1.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OSTEOPATHY?

One of the major benefits of Osteopathy is it encourages the body to heal itself by increasing circulation & reducing BP. Osteopathy removes the underlying cause of pain, it reduces stiffness in muscles & joints while increasing the range of motion in the same, and treats spinal problems resulting from poor posture or spinal disk injuries. Osteopathy relieves chronic pain through non-invasive treatment by decreasing the stress on joints, reducing the tension in the body (even headaches & migraine headaches).

2.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE THERE FOR BACK PAIN?

When someone suffers back pain, the most available & popular options are NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), physical therapy, therapeutic massage, hydrotherapy & manual therapy like osteopathy & chiropractic medicine. There are other alternative therapies available too, like acupuncture and pain management modalities. In any case, treatment is necessary to restore the balance within the body & help strengthen itself.

3.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM PHYSIOTHERAPY AND CHIROPRACTIC?

Physiotherapy & Chiropractic focus more on observing movement & correcting technique; they concentrate on restoring function & performance to the problem area. Osteopaths view the body as a unique, interconnected, self-healing system. Osteopathic treatment focuses on correcting disturbances with this system, whether caused by muscle weakness, imbalance and/or tension, restricted joint movement or poor posture.

28

4.

WHAT ABOUT OSTEOPATHY & POST-NATAL CARE?

Depending on the type of labour experienced, women can have a wide range of postnatal issues. Unresolved childbirth stresses from labour can contribute to ongoing back problems, difficulties with menstruation, stress incontinence & bowel problems such as constipation etc. Osteopathic care helps prevent or manage problems like pelvic & low back strain, post labour realignment, post caesarean scarring, pelvic floor weakness, incontinence, interrupted sleep & fatigue, it also helps the body to regain its shape, strength & flexibility.

5.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VISITING AN OSTEOPATH DURING PREGNANCY? IS THERE ANY RISK OF GETTING THE TREATMENT WHILE BEING PREGNANT? Any expectant mother with existing back problem or history of strains & body imbalances will find it more difficult to accommodate a pregnant body. Osteopathy during pregnancy alleviates symptoms & encourages the best possible environment for the development of the baby. In addition, Osteopathic treatment of the pelvis to release new & old strains can facilitate an increased chance for an uncomplicated delivery.

6.

WHAT WOULD YOU REQUIRE ON THE FIRST VISIT?

Any expectant mother with existing back problem or At the first consultation, an Osteopath will have you fill in a complete patient case history outlining the state of health & the main reason for consultation. This will assist the osteopathic doctor to determine the cause of your problem & the necessary treatment will then be advised. Depending on this an evaluation of your posture may be conducted to observe tension zones & lines of gravity. Vsit our Osteopathy Clinic – Back On the Move located on first floor of Sunlight Plaza, Seef District, Bahrain Alternatively, we are happy to assist people with their queries via phone +973 77 300 600.

NURTURING INTELLIGENCE: HOW TO ENCOURAGE LEARNING AND DEVELOP CAPACITY? By Alison Willis Recommended age: Parents The current generation of parents is under constant pressure to find ways to maximise the intelligence of their children as they prepare them for an unknown future. In Nurturing Intelligence: How to Encourage Learning and Develop Capacity, Alison Willis, PhD, presents the latest research from the forefronts of education, psychology, and science in a series of concise anecdotes and pictures that are easy to understand.

THE CIRCUS SHIP BY CHRIS VAN DUSEN By Chris Van Dusen Recommended age: Parents When a circus ship runs aground off the coast of Maine, the poor animals are left on their own to swim the chilly waters. Staggering onto a nearby island, they soon win over the wary townspeople with their kind, courageous ways.

DEAR ZOO By Rod Campbell Recommended age: 2-6 years A letter to the zoo asking for a pet results in a succession being dispatched all of the deliveries containing highly unsuitable pets! All, of course, except the last one.

WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT By Michael Rosen Recommended age: 2-6 years Follow and join in the family’s excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest!

USE YOUR WORDS, SOPHIE By Julia Donaldson Recommended age: Parents Use Your Words, Sophie is a preschooler book geared toward welcoming and communicating with a new sibling from author-illustrator Rosemary Wells. In this third book about 2-year-old Sophie (following Time-Out for Sophie and Sophie’s Terrible Twos), she welcomes home a baby sister but insists upon speaking to her in a slew of secret languages. Kids will love the idea of nonsensical languages such as Baboon and Space Martian, and those with new siblings will relate to the experience of getting to know a new person in the household and learning how to become a useful part of the new baby’s care.

THE GRUFFALO By Julia Donaldson Recommended age: 2-6 years The Gruffalo is a children’s book by writer and playwright Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, that tells the story of a mouse, the protagonist of the book, taking a walk in a European forest..

GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU By Sam McBratney Recommended age: 2-6 years This is the story of two Nutbrown Hares, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare. The two are never stated to be father and son in the original storybooks, though are referred to as such in the narration for the animated television series..

PLAYFUL LEARNING

ALPHATOTS

By Mariah Bruehl Recommended age: Parents

Recommended age: 3-6 years Category: Vocabulary APP Devices: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Fire phone, Kindle Fire

Playful learning is the magic that takes place when we combine a child’s sense of joy and wonder with thoughtfully planned learning experiences. Through easy-to-implement, hands-on projects, you can engage your child in fun and creative ways that encourage learning and impart the joy of discovery. With a little bit of information and forethought, you can play a pivotal role in the cognitive and creative development of your child. This book would be a great read for a parent whois thinking about homeschooling or a parent who desires to encourage a love for learning in their child. It gives confidence to natural discovery and curiosity while providing solid ideas on how to guide those moments to their best advantage.

HAROLD’S PURPLE CRYON By Crockett Johnson Recommended age: 3-6 years Parents need to know that Harold and the Purple Crayon is a classic children’s book first published in 1955 that features a calm, upbeat but mostly silent little boy who creates his surroundings with his ever-present purple crayon. He makes up his own fun, and even gets scared by some of his drawings: He’s chased by a dragon he draws, he falls of a mountain he draws, he has to draw a boat to save himself from drowning in the sea he accidentally draws.

JESSICA’S BOX By Peter Carnavas Recommended age: 3-6 years Jessica’s Box is a heartwarming tale teaching children the value of self-confidence and the importance of trusting in yourself and being true to yourself. The narrative and illustrations complement each other beautifully making this a heartfelt, sometimes sad and sometimes funny read.

AlphaTots is an excellent tool for helping children learn the alphabet. Filled with creative and clever interactive activities, the app reinforces letters with interactive elements that are fun to do (such as assembling a building for the letter B or cutting strings for the letter C). Letters are sounded out and the app is easy for kids of virtually all ages to navigate.

MOO, BAA, LA LA LA! Recommended age: 2-6 years Category: Books Devices: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Fire phone, Kindle Fire Parents need to know that Moo, Baa, La La La! is an interactive version of the classic board book by Sandra Boynton. Like the book that inspired it, the app is aimed at toddlers. They can read the book with or without narration, and can hear individual words spoken aloud when they are tapped. There are lots of interactive hotspots for kids to find as they explore the pages, and tilting the device also creates some small movements on the page.

STORYLINES Recommended age: 8+ Category: Before a Flight Devices: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad StoryLines is a creative app designed for multiple players, through pass-and-play or Facebook. The first player is encouraged to write a well-known saying (he or she can submit any sentence) and then pass it on to the next player. The second player draws a picture to go with the original sentence and then passes it along to a third player. The third player is asked to write a caption for what the second player has drawn. This goes on for anywhere from three to nine rounds. At the end, the entire StoryLine is revealed, and it’s fun to see how the original saying was interpreted and re-interpreted with each round. THINGS TO DO IN BAHRAIN The evenings (and afternoons) are getting darker and that familiar plaintive cry “I’m bored” is getting louder and louder... Need to keep your little ones busy this “Back to School” time? Get inspired with our activity list.

There is no doubt about it, entertaining your baby, toddler or older child can be both exhilarating and exhausting at times. Sometimes just getting out of the house can be a daunting experience from co-ordinating sleep schedules, finding change facilities, available shade, finding entertainment for different aged children, affording trips out... the list goes on. But when you get there, watching them grow, learn, laugh and play makes juggling the logistics worth it, plus it has the added benefit of keeping you sane! We are fortunate that Bahrain has an enormous variety of things to do when it comes to getting out and about. From a vast network of libraries, galleries, entertainment venues, parks, forts, playgrounds and public beaches, there is a huge range of free and low cost activities, programs and events that will make entertaining your tot a breeze.

PUBLIC BEACHES Budaiya Beach

The cleanest of the old public beaches with a good swimming area for the kids and a working playground. A popular picnicking area. (Budaiya)

Al Jazeera Beach

Free entry. The restaurant Saffron is located inside the fort and serves up a yummy traditional Bahraini breakfast (6BD for two). The fort gives elevated views over the valley and is well maintained. (Riffa)

Bahrain Fort

Al Areen Wildlife Park

Below the fort is a small museum and a cafe where it is nice to relax and enjoy the view, while the kids can play on the beach. (Seef)

WATERPARKS

Arad Fort

Entrance is 500 fils and can request a guide to give you a tour. One of the smaller forts but has some steps to climb and an old cannon at the top of the tower. (Across from Seef Mall Muharraq)

Bu Maher Fort

Riffa Fort

To get to this fort you must go by boat leaving from behind the National Museum. Ticket is 1BD from the museum’s front desk. Boats leave every 15mins between 10am and 6pm. Everyone knows that playing is fun. Have any doubts? All you need to do is watch how exuberant, carefree and energized children are when they’re engaged in an activity and having a good time. It has now been proven that there are often benefits to active play besides just having a good time. Studies have shown that it’s also a major factor in the appropriate social, emotional, mental and physical development of children. In fact, play is so important it has been recognised “the rights of every child”, as being essential for healthy child development.

O

ne of the main reasons why indoor play is good for children is that the wide range of equipment builds different areas of fitness and well-being in children. Activities range from the physical stimulation of a play frame incorporating slides, ball pool pits, rope ladders climbing nets and the like, to the more mentally stimulating activities such as learning play equipment and interactive games.

PLAY ALSO HELPS YOUR CHILD: • Build confidence • Feel loved, happy and safe • Develop social skills, language and communication • Learn about caring for others and the environment • Develop physical skills • Connect and refine pathways in their brain

36

Children who engage in active play learn many basic motor skills that are not taught in organized sports. Furthermore, studies show that poor physical fitness among children is often traced to play deprivation. By making exercise fun and exciting, kids will be more motivated to engage in the activity. In turn, this will make children more likely to continue to exercise as they grow older.

YELLOW SUBMARINE

PLAY- BAHRAIN

Marta says: “There are limited numbers of quality soft play areas in Bahrain so when we’ve heard that there is a new one coming up and just opened we rushed to be the first ones to test it. And it was love at first sight!

Seef, Seef Mall, 17 564 900 PLAY is a hands-on activity center designed to meet the needs of children at every stage of their creative and educational development. Offering different structured events and activities and services such as Drop & Shop, PLAY caters to the needs of parents and children alike. Arranged as a village setting, PLAY has themed play areas - police station, hospital, supermarket, salon, home, construction area and more. Kelly says: “The great thing about Play is that parents can drop their kids off (as long as they’re over four), know they’re in safe hands and enjoy a little leisure time themselves in Seef Mall. Better yet, as it’s a handson activity centre, Play aims not only to entertain your child but also to educate and nurture creativity. ‘Where play and learning connect, reads their mission statement.” www.playbahrain.com

Saar, Saar Mall, 17 000 037 Yellow Submarine opened up in Saar Mall and is offering 360m2 of play area centre’s and is well equipped for babies and up to approximately 13 years of age. It is all one big giant three-level play frame including slides, ball pools, ball canons, a climbing wall and a separate area for little kids under 4 years old.

It is a fact well know to all the mums out there that soft play areas are a wonderful entertainment option for families. This is where we meet other mums and their tots so we can exchange our experiences while kids are playing with their friends in a safe environment. What I personally like the best is that they can make as much noise as they want to and they won’t hurt themselves.” www.yellowsubmarinekids.com

Where are you eating today? Just because you’re now responsible for a tiny human being doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun. There are quite a few kid-friendly restaurants in Bahrain that will welcome your whole family without raised eyebrows whether you’re digging the best mac n’ cheese or just need a good slice of pizza.

GETTING AROUND

IF YOU ARE NEW TO BAHRAIN, THINGS MIGHT SEEM A LITTLE CONFUSING. THIS SECTION WILL HELP YOU OUT WITH YOUR DAY TO DAY MATTERS AND WOULD GIVE YOU AN EDGE IF YOU’VE JUST MOVED IN.

ELECTRICITY AND WATER

MOBILE CALLS

RENT A CAR

Pay Electricity and Water bill service is provided by Electricity and Water Authority (EWA). The EWA web portal gives an insight into utility bills and also allows customers also to pay their electricity and water bills online. https://services.bahrain.bh 24 hours service: +973 17 515555

There are three main providers in Bahrain: Batelco, Zain and Viva. Personal mobile services vary according to the mobile package you choose and their tariffs. Most of the people opt for a pre-paid system, where credit can be topped up online or at most supermarkets and convenience stores. The usual mobile contracts requirement run for a minimum of one or two years. Batelco offers special tariffs for university students – apply by presenting your student ID and your registration form to a customer service counter.

Pay Car-hire companies have offices in Manama and at the airport, charging from BD17/68 for one day/week for the smallest four-door sedan. To avoid the excess of BD100 to BD200 in case of an accident, it’s wise to pay the extra BD2 Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) per day. Rates are for a minimum of 24 hours. WATER Most of the people in Bahrain prefer buying bottled water, as it is very low priced. Many purchase a water cooler for use with five-gallon bottles as a convenient and economical solution, with water suppliers delivering refill bottles directly at your doorstep. Some suppliers provide prepaid coupons, so you don’t have to be at home when they deliver. You can just leave the empty bottle and a coupon outside your door. In Bahrain, cooking water is also available cheaper than drinking, but less treated and supplied by huge water tankers. If you want to test your water, the right number to call is Laboratory Services 17464402. They will test your water for around BD 70.

The best method of sponsoring a maid is to hire a maid who already lives in Bahrain, looking for a new job. Another easy way to find a maid is to ask advices and recommendations on Mums in Bahrain Facebook Page. www.facebook.com/mumsinbahrain

The salary of a locally recruited maid would be slightly higher than an agency maid, but, as an employer, you will not have to incur any additional fee. As per our community mums, part time maid rate is 2BD per hour and some provide extra for transport.

SPONSORSHIP

SOFA & CARPET CLEANING

The rates to hire a maid through an agency varies accordingly. It could be anywhere between BD 800 - BD 1100. The rates also depend on the nationality of the maid you’re willing to hire. Filipinos are usually more expensive. Most agencies charge around BD 90 - BD 110 for maids with no experience, and upto BD 150 for maids with experience. According to the law, you are also required to provide them with medical insurance and one flight ticket back home every two years. Make sure the agency gives you the 3 month assurance too. You get to take them back within 3 months if anything goes wrong and you get most of your money back ( 10-15% deduction ) also there is a housemaid insurance now that states, if they runaway within the 2 years contract you get a certain amount of money back.
