ASK THE

E X P E RT

Do you have questions about pregnancy or parenting? Feel free to get in touch with us!

Q.

FASTING AS A DIABETIC

I am a diabetic, Can I fast in Ramadan? Fasting during Ramadan for patients with diabetes carries a risk of an assortment of complications. In general, patients with type 1 diabetes should be strongly advised not to fast. For type 2 diabetes, this decision can be made by a Pre-Ramadan checkup and discussion with your specialist physician. Answered by Dr. Sunil Rao – Specialist Internal Medicine

ASK THE EXPERT

Q.

6

EATING HABITS DURING PREGNANCY

Q.

FREQUENT BABY STOOLS

My baby is passing frequently stools, almost after every feeding. Is it normal? Newborn babies pass stool quite frequently. Especially if the baby is breast-fed, stool can be up to 10-12 times daily. Stools are usually small in quantity, yellowish, sometimes greenish. As long your baby is feeding well, passing urine adequately, at least 6 wet diapers in 24 hours and gaining weight as expected, it shouldn’t be a worry. Answered by Dr. Arjun C. Dey – Consultant Pediatrics & Neonatology

Q.

METABOLISM

What kind of food should be avoided during pregnancy?

Does Green Tea and Chilli Peppers boost metabolism?

To have a healthy pregnancy, avoid having more than two portions of oily fish such as salmon, as it has too much of substance and can be harmful for the unborn baby’s development. Sushi and undercooked meals might develop infections to the baby as well. You should also avoid eating liver, as it is high in Vitamin A, which in high doses can harm the development of unborn baby’s nervous system.

The answer is No. There’s no magical food that will speed up your metabolism. Some studies have shown that green tea and hot chilies temporarily boost metabolic rates, but this isn’t enough to offset eating too many calories. The path to a healthy weight loss is through portion control and a balanced diet filled with nutrient rich foods, not through a diet doused in chili peppers.

Q.

FOOT ACHE AFTER BIRTH

My new baby is just three weeks old. In the last few weeks of pregnancy, my feet swelled up so much that it became uncomfortable to walk. The swelling has gone since the birth, but now I notice aching in my feet and it’s stopping me from getting out walking as much as I would like. Is this normal?

This is not unusual and a visit to your Chartered Physiotherapist will solve this for you. There are a few things to consider with this type of pain. The alignment of your feet and legs could be putting pressure on your arches, especially if your feet are very flat. An insole or an orthotic can successfully ease that pressure to make walking comfortable again. There may also be a trapped nerve causing your pain, although this is less likely if it is in both feet and without pins and needles. Diagnosing and treating this as soon as possible is key.

Q.

POST-NATAL EXERCISE

My baby is four months old and I have been attending a high intensity workout class, for the past month that is aimed at new mums. One of the exercises is a double leg lift and it hurts my back every time I do it. The instructor tells me it’s just because my muscles are weak, but I am worried about hurting my back..

Stop doing double leg lifts. Double leg lifts are challenging at any time, let alone in the months after having a baby. It should not be part of a post-natal workout, and you should attend a class where the instructors are trained to know this. The reason for your back pain is that your tummy muscles cannot counteract the weight of your legs when they are lowered, and your hip flexor muscles (which attach to the lower back) are strongly contracting instead causing you to arch your back excessively. While we’re discussing high-intensity post-natal classes, please ensure that you are checked for DRAM by your GP or Chartered Physiotherapist before starting. DRAM (diastasis of the rectus abdominal muscles) is a split in the centre of your ‘six-pack’ muscle, which occurs in approximately 30% of women after having a baby. If you have DRAM, you should not be doing sit-ups or crunches, and you should be rolling when getting into and out of bed. If you have a gap of three fingers or more on testing, your Chartered Physiotherapist can work with you to close that gap through targeted, appropriate exercises.

Q.

HEART ATTACK SY M P TO M S

Q.

DURING PREGNANCY

How do the symptoms of heart attack differ between men and women?

Epileptic women and anti-epileptic drugs; can they be taken during pregnancy?

Men and Woman have different symptoms when it comes to heart attack. In the case of men, symptoms such as difficulty breathing, pain in the left arm or jaw and chest pain may occur. For Women on the other hand, the pain associated is more diffused such as shoulder, neck, arms, abdomen and back pain. Anxiety, nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and cold sweat are other symptoms associated with heart attack.

Any medication that is taken during pregnancy can affect your baby’s health. Skeletal abnormalities, Birth defects and congenital heart and urinary tract defects are some of the primary concerns associated with anti-seizure medications.

In addition, women also tend to have more severe first heart attacks that more frequently lead to death compared to men.

For mothers who take anti-seizure medication, there is a 4 to 6% risk of major birth defects when compared to 2 to 3% for all other babies. It is best to continue treatment however under the supervision of your Health Care provider who will regulate the type and dosage of the medication that fits your type of seizures.

RAMA DAN Gergaoon

I

t is one of the most joyful celebrations in Ramadan especially for kids in Bahrain with all the candies and the treats they get that night. Usually celebrated on either the 13th, 14th or 15th of the Islamic calendar month of Ramadan – called Gergaoun, Gerge’an, Garangaoua or Hag el Leila depending on which GCC country. During Gergaoun children wander from house to house while signing and knocking on every door in the neighbourhood with their empty Gergaoun bags in their hands. When the kids enter a home they start to sing “give us, may Allah reward you and to the Holy Mosque in Mecca take you. When the kids are given their request from the visited household, they express their gratitude by chanting: Many Happy Returns and do not stop this habit/ tradition.

RAMADAN Gergaoun

“TRICK OR TREAT”

20

Children in colourful traditional costumes go from house to house with their bags and drums singing and chanting prayers and receiving sweets such as traditional arabic sweets (‘halwa’ or ‘baklava’), nuts, sun dried figs or dates in return. This night is all about celebrating heritage and another family gathering in the spirit of Ramadan.

The utility bill that can often cause the most pain (and surprise) would have to be the electricity bill. It’s so easy for the electricity bill to skyrocket when energy saving practices lag in the home.

Do you have othe r savi ng tips that you’ d like to shar e with othe r fami lies? We’d love to hear from you via our webs ite or emai l at mib@ mums inbah rain .net

1.

Where possible, swap your light bulbs over to LED energy saving bulbs.

2.

Always turn the lights off when you’re not in a room.

3.

Use low wattage lamps in lounge rooms and bedrooms instead of higher wattage ceiling lights.

4.

Turn everything off at the wall such as televisions, DVD players, radios and lamps. Avoid leaving anything on standby.

5.

Open up your house and let the breeze flow through during the warmer months instead of turning on the air-conditioning system.

6.

Water cooler should be kept off during night and whenever not required for long time.

7.

When you do use the air-conditioning system, make sure curtains and blinds are drawn and every door and window is closed including doors to bedrooms and bathrooms. Closing up ensures the cool air stays in the main areas and the air-conditioner doesn’t have to work twice as hard to cool more space.

8.

Limit the use of the clothes dryer and use your washing line or clothes racks.

9.

Use your dishwasher during non-peak periods. From 10pm to 1am & from 1pm to 4pm

10.

Set the thermostat at a moderate temperature

11.

Use the washing machine and the dish washer with full capacity

12.

Keep the water heater off during summer.

TRIED AND TESTED

The good news is that your electricity bill doesn’t always have to be huge. You just have to follow some (or all) of these tips and you are guaranteed to see a diference.

FUN ON A

BUDGET

Do you have ot her saving tips t hat you’d like t o share wit h ot her families? We’d love t o hear fr om you via our website or email at mib@mumsinbahrain.net

Creating a great low-cost day out is rewarding in itself. Here are some ideas to get you started.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL We live in such a beautiful part of the world that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to natural attractions such as our beaches, rivers and bushland. Here are a few other local activities that will get you out exploring and having fun in no time: • Get onto your council website and investigate the resources and events at your local library, botanical garden, museum or gallery. Each of these places will offer free or low cost workshops and sessions for children and families. • Charity stores are a treasure trove of wonders for parents and kids! Set a budget – or create a treasure hunt list of items to spot. • Wander through your local farmers markets.

• Find out where the local wildlife spends their time. Feeding dolphins at Coral Bay or spotting parrots at the Aziza Bird Kingdom are activities kids will love. • Take a scenic drive, pack a picnic and spend the day exploring. • Visit a working farm like Peninsula Farm, and if the budget stretches take in a tour. For example: Peninsula Farm - refer page 26 • Go on a modern day treasure hunt and try your hand at geocaching. You can download an App or create an account online at: www.geocaching.com • Find out where your local BMX track is for an off-road adventure the whole family can enjoy. • For the aviation enthusiast find a safe spot to park at your local airport and spend a few hours plane spotting. If you are taking photos remember to turn of the flash! • Go to your council’s website and look for your local community garden. You can spend some quiet time with the kids investigating the plants, and you may even find yourself a new hobby. • Make a list of playgrounds in your area and go ‘park hopping’. There are some hidden gems within new housing developments.

VALUE FOR MONEY Theme parks and zoos have some great value offers on their year long memberships plus specials for midweek visits. Be sure to check the minimum age required to buy a ticket as some places offer free entry for children under a certain age. Al Areen Wildlife Park 1BD entry. Large area to walk around and explore with many different animals some roaming free. Bus tour can take you to see the animals further out on the reserve in their more natural habitat. On the far side there is a lovely Japanese garden and a shaded playground. Birds Kingdom Aziza Bird Kingdom is home to many beautiful and rare birds - 70 different species and over 500 birds. (Amwaj Islands) Bahrain Dolphin Club The two resident dolphins perform tricks and dance with their trainer for about 50 minutes. You can also make a private appointment to swim with the dolphins for BD20. ( Al Fateh Marina) Lost Paradise of Dilmun For the kids, the huge interactive rain fortress, with slides, water sprays, tip buckets and a host of jets and sprays, is a must. For the thrill seekers, check out the Boomerang and the Superbowl. (Al Areen)

Words Bookstore Café Bahrain’s Charming Intellectual Spot

Bahrain is a relatively small country, but even so, sometimes you need a bit of local advice to find what you’re looking for, whether it’s a good people-watching spot, somewhere to see some contemporary art, or the best place to relax. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here is one of our favourite spots in Bahrain Words Bookstore Café! If you are searching for a place to find good books, great coffee and delicious food, this place is for you!

WORDS BOOKSTORE CAFÉ

T

26

he idea for Words was born over an afternoon coffee just before the summer of 2010. We wanted to create a place where you could not only find great books and coffee but also a space for the community, somewhere for families and friends to gather over a beautiful book and a delicious cupcake, where creative types would be inspired and where serendipity would play a part in wonderful collaborations between the people who met there. Eighteen months later, in February 2012, we opened our doors and have been blown away by all the amazing people who have walked through them.

Want to discover a great new book and lose yourself in places unknown? Are you looking for a last minute gift for the birthday party your child is invited to this afternoon? Do you want just a quiet moment to yourself with a hot cup of coffee and a delicious cupcake in a beautiful space surrounded by shelves and shelves of books? Visit us at Words Bookstore Café on the Budaiya Highway and find all of that and much more. Words opened five years ago when

owners Eileen and Rana decided that there was a need for a space that combined their two great loves, books and coffee. They have put together a very carefully curated selection of fiction, design, art, travel, and children’s

books as well as a vast bookcase in the café dedicated to their favourite type of books: cookbooks! There is also a wonderful collection of children’s gifts, art and crafts and toys. Since it opened, Words has become a centre for the community where people gather to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects. Art exhibitions and pop up shops are a common occurrence in their new space, ‘More Words’. Workshops, talks and book signings happen regularly and they have had a parade of fantastic chef authors come in and demonstrate their culinary prowess in the café.. There is a regular Storytime usually every Saturday (except during public and school holidays) but please call ahead to make sure it is on. To keep updated with Words event calendar, follow them on: Instagram: @wordsbookstorecafe Facebook: www.facebook.com/WordsBookstoreCafe www.wordsbookstorecafe.com

BABY COLIC: A COMMON PROBLEM IN INFANTS

W

hen you are parents for the first time you may face a lot of challenges during the first few weeks to a few months. You may often find your child to be quite unhappy or cranky or fussy which is more common during night time. Friends who are older than you and are parents will come up with various suggestions such as “your child has Colic” – that should be investigated more. Let me help you understand what Colic is.

WHAT IS COLIC?

BABY colic

The condition of colic applies to a baby who is otherwise well, cries at least 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for at least 3 weeks. Colic is likely to start around age 2 weeks if your infant is full-term (or later if premature). It almost always goes away on its own by 3 or 4 months. Your baby’s gender and birth order, breast or bottle feeding, don’t affect it.

WHY IT HAPPENS? The exact cause of colic is not known. However, there are some possible explanations like: a growing digestive system with muscles that often spasm, accumulation of gas in stomach. Sometimes it could also be related to still maturing nervous system. Rarely it could be related to baby’s own or maternal food. Though colic is a benign condition, sometimes there could be other conditions which may mimic colic. If there is any doubt about the condition you better consult with your baby doctor. The possible other conditions could be infection, acid reflux or pain in any other part of the body.

HOW TO TREAT COLIC? There is no curative treatment for this condition. You need to be patient for this initial few weeks to months for the condition to disappear by its own. There are some practices which you can try. You should

burp the baby after each feeding and make sure that baby is emitting some gas from stomach. As a mother you better avoid some foods like cabbage, excessive spices or sour in food. If your child is formula fed you may consider changing that after consulting with doctor. You may also try some warm sponging on the tummy as well. There are few other medicines used for this condition which should be taken on doctor’s advice.

PENINSULA FARMS! Making Good Food Real

F

arm stands, local bakeries, village natural food shops, farmers’ markets, and off-the-beaten-path seafood purveyors these are the spots that can really make you feel you’ve discovered a place. Finding what’s best locally takes you from being a tourist to a traveller.

PENINSULA FARMS

WHAT DO YOU DO? HOW MANY YEARS ARE YOU IN THE BUSINESS?

30

Peninsula farms is a hydroponic and dairy farm located in the Southern desert of the Kingdom of Bahrain. We started in 2012 as a hydroponic farm specializing in a variety of different kinds of lettuce, cherry tomatoes and capsicum. In the year 2014, we decided to import pure bred Nubian and Alpine goats which made possible for us to produce every day fresh goat’s milk, cheese, labneh and soap which we take pride of.

WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER? AND HOW CAN THEY HELP THE LIVES OF EACH PERSON EVERY DAY? All our vegetables are harvested 100% with the assurance as pesticide free. Our mixed salad, which is our most popular product -- is washed and sanitized giving you the guarantee that it’s safe to consume and eat straight from the package. We have been providing the local market with fresh salads and vegetables which allows them to have the option of selecting fresh produces that may contain more nutritional value. Our products are 100% produced at Kingdom of Bahrain and have not gone through a rigorous shipping process which can play a huge role when preserving its freshness. Fresh goat’s milk can be an alternative to cow’s milk. Our goat’s milk doesn’t undergo homogenizing, so the nutrients are retained in the milk. Goat’s milk also contains less lactose and can be enjoyed by people with lactose intolerance.

DO YOU HAVE OTHER PRODUCTS WHICH YOU TAKE PRIDE IN? We are proud to say that of all our products for a reason that they are all looked after and produced with dedication and care.

Peninsula Farms were set up to grow fresh food for the people of Bahrain. We’re growing local food for local people. We aim to limit the import of fresh produce by providing local produce that is of high quality and competitively priced when compared to imported produce in the market. Bahrain Food security and sustainability is our purpose, we would like to have Bahraini food for everyone living in Bahrain.

DO YOU DELIVER, IF YES, HOW CAN WE PLACE AN ORDER? Yes, we currently deliver to different areas. You can keep in touch with us with this number 32 010 971 through phone call or WhatsApp to place an order. Soon we will also activate our online shop.

WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER? AND HOW CAN THEY HELP THE LIVES OF EACH PERSON EVERY DAY? Goat milk soap can be very beneficial to the skin, made from all natural ingredients. The goat’s milk soap contains 60% of olive oil which makes it highly moisturizing and conditioning to the skin. We have testimonials regarding patients who suffer from eczema, psoriasis and severely dry skin to have benefited greatly from goat’s milk soap.

WHY USE A HANDCRAFTED SOAP? Living in the present with a huge contribution of social media, most of the people are starting to be more concerned with what they eat and try on their skin and be healthy. We often forget that our skin, which is 90% of our body ingests everything we put on it. With Peninsula Farms goat milk soap, it means that you are only putting all natural ingredients on your skin.

GOAT MILK PRODUCTS Our milk is arguably the healthiest milk you can drink. What we are offering is pure unadulterated goat milk straight from our farms where our goats are happy and live long lives. Biochemically goat milk has the nearest nutrition value to a mother’s milk. Also it takes only 20 minutes to be absorbed in the human body.

GOAT MILK SOAP Goat milk soap is known for its gentle and soothing qualities, along with organic oils and aroma-therapeutic essential oils. The benefits come from goat’s milk itself and the art of making soap by hand. The secret in goat’s milk soap itself is, capric-caprylic triglyceride, a molecule only found in goat milk that has been found to be very healthy for the skin. This wonderful combination is very comforting to dry, irritated and sensitive skin. Our buttery soaps are created from the same base of Olive oil, goat milk and Lye, Fragrance or Essential oils and some of our soaps contain natural pigments.

RAMADAN Recipes

R

amadan is th 9th month in the Islamic Lunar calendar in which Muslims all over the world fast from dawn to dusk. This is considered a holy month by Muslims in which they are required to refrain from eating, smoking or drinking from sunrise to sunset. Two words you will hear a lot during Ramadan are “Suhoor” and “Iftar”. Suhoor is the meal taken just before sunrise, before the day of fasting begins. It is usually a very light meal and people drink plenty of water. Once the sun has risen, no more food or drink can be consumed by most adults. Iftar is the meal to break the fast after sunset. This year it will be around 6:26pm. People tent to eat traditional

RAMADAN RECIPES

Method: Fry garlic and onions in oil until golden. Add the ginger, bay leaves and chicken pieces, followed by tomatoes and half the coriander. Add water, then carrots.

32

Stir the mix and leave to simmer for half an hour. Add potatoes and your optional choice of vegetables, the rest of the coriander, mint and seasoning spices with 2 more cups of water and leave it to simmer again for another 30 minutes. In a big, deep serving dish, tear the bread into bite-size pieces and lay it in the dish. Serve the stew on top.

food, usually with family and friends. Then they head to night prayers around 8pm, and after prayers they may have a special Ramadan dessert. Many hotels and restaurants in Bahrain offer Iftar buffets and meals (ref. page 10) The Mums in Bahrain website will list the most recommended ones, so make sure you visit www.mumsinbahrain.net for more details and for special Ramadan Activities. Iftars are a great way to experience traditional foods and enjoy the special atmosphere. This year Mums in Bahrain team decided to share how Ramadan Iftar tables look in Islamic countries around the world. We have included many authentic recipes from 10 countries. We hope you will like and try them all!

SHOUFAN SOUP -KSAMethod: In a pressure cooker fry the onion in oil until golden. Add the lamb cubes and stir for few minutes until half cooked. Add the tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, chicken stock cube and 2 cups of water, close the cooker and cook on medium heat for around 30 minutes. Remove pressure cooker from heat and wait until all the steam escapes before opening it. Open the cooker, add the oatmeal, white pepper, black pepper, salt and a little water if needed. Put the cooker back on a low heat while continuing to stir until the oatmeal is cooked. Serve hot with a squeeze of lemon.

MAHSHI “STUFFED VEGETABLES” -EgyptMethod: Sauté the chopped onions in 1 tablespoon oil for 3 minutes or until wilted and yellow. Add the tomato sauce, salt, pepper and spices. Simmer for 3 minutes. Rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Finely chop the herbs. Add the prepared tomato sauce and herbs to the rice and mix well. Prepare the vegetables. If using zucchini, remove most of the central core leaving only a thin outer shell, taking care not to break or pierce the vegetable (you can buy specialist coring utensils from most supermarkets). If you are using leafy vegetables, blanch and cool the leaves, removing any tough stems. Using a teaspoon, stuff each vegetable with the rice mixture pushing down the rice as you add more with handle of the spoon. Leave ½ inch unstuffed to allow the rice to expand when cooked. If using leaves, then place a spoonful of mixture on the leaf and roll into a parcel. Add half a tablespoon of oil to the bottom of a non-stick pot. Arrange onion slices to cover the bottom. This is to avoid the bottoms of the vegetables being charred if the water dries out and it also gives a nice flavour to the meal. Arrange stuffed vegetables on top of onions in a slightly standing position to avoid the rice spilling out. Add 1 cup of broth or water. Bring to a boil, then simmer on a very low heat until the rice is cooked, about 15 to 20 minutes. When it cools down slightly, arrange the vegetables in a serving dish and discard the onion slices.

CHICKEN JALFREZI -PakistanMethod: Heat some oil in a deep frying pan and fry

the onion and garlic for 2 minutes over a high heat. Add chicken, turmeric, chilli powder and salt. Fry gently for 5 to 10 minutes or until golden. Add tomatoes, cover and cook over a medium heat for 20 minutes. Uncover and simmer for 10 minutes to let all the excess liquid evaporate and the sauce thicken. Add ghee or oil, cumin, ground coriander, ginger and fresh coriander and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes or until the fat separates out from the thick sauce. Serve chicken pieces with the sauce spooned on top. This dish could be served with rice, chapattis or naan bread.

FATTOUSH -LebanonRinse all of the vegetables thoroughly with cold water or vegetable wash solution. You could also soak them in cold water and a cup of white vinegar for a few minutes to kill any bacteria. TANDOORI SPICED BAKED CHICKEN -IndiaMethod: Prepare chicken by slicing into each

piece so as to allow the yogurt marinade to seep in and tenderize it. In a large bowl, add yogurt, lemon juice, ginger and garlic, plus all of the spices. Mix well and remove any lumps in the yogurt. Add chicken and mix to fully combine. Cover and place in refrigerator to marinate for minimum 4 hours to overnight. Preheat the oven to 400° F.
