AUDIENCE,
In the face of the series of challenges in recent years, which regularly proved themselves to be significantly testing, we have often said: these are difficult times. It’s no secret that the events around us sometimes remind us of Cicero’s poignant words: “when arms speak, muses are silent ” However, our task and our goal – as the country’s leading cultural institution – is to use all of our strength to keep the muses alive so that our visitors can recharge and relax, even in times of trial and tribulation. Hand in hand with our colleagues, we set out to create exceptional conditions for domestic and international artists to continue to present their performances on the Müpa Budapest stages to the outstanding standards they are used to delivering.
Now more than ever, it is important for everyone to have an island of peace where they can find tranquility, a community from which they can draw strength, a space where they can find relaxation, liberation or inspiration. It has perhaps never before been so vital to reach as many people as possible with art and culture – as it helps us all to understand the challenges we face day after day. This situation has an impact not only on us, but also on the community that has come together over the past 18 years. We understand and
appreciate that the difficult economic situation is also making our visitors plan more carefully and make more prudent choices. The almost daily changes that surround us teach us resilience and patience, and new habits and influences encourage new approaches and new ways of thinking for all of society – from individuals to small communities, all the way up to powerful businesses. This also holds true for cultural institutions, including Müpa Budapest. Therefore, in response to the fact that for a significant proportion of our visitors, a long-term commitment may now be too much of a financial burden, we have decided to replace our usual arrangements for the 2023/24 season with a thematic but flexible ticketing system for productions, until the end of the year at present, and not put our traditional season tickets on sale. This means that everyone is still free to choose from a wide range of genres and styles, in line with their interests and financial opportunities. We hope that this will help both old and new members of the Müpa Budapest community. Hang in there and join us in the 2023/24 season as well.

It was in 1979, 44 years ago, when we met for the first time, at a concert of his Five Canons To Poems By Attila József. He was wearing a blue corduroy suit. I remember this and the piece.
I have been collecting and “stealing” his sheet music ever since. Later, when he became the editor of Zeneműkiadó (Editio Musica Budapest), we met more often, ate, drank, listened to music (Mahler, Shostakovich), maybe even talked, although these occasions became more like monologues: he talked, we listened. There was much to hear. With a nudge from György Selmeczi, we even wrote a joint work, disguising ourselves as avant-garde. It was a wonderful time, when we showed each other the pieces we were working on. His notes were incredibly precise and relevant, but the key moment was when he played, say, the Passion or the Rorate. And then the times of joint creative houses, which resulted in Kisoroszi, where all four of us [György Orbán, János Vajda, György Selmeczi, Miklós Csemiczky – ed.] can still be together to this day.
Of course, the most important are the works. I think many prominent people on the Hungarian music scene are not aware of the huge oeuvre that has been created here over in recent past decades.
He is considered an internationally renowned and successful choral composer, but his major chamber music works, oratorios, masses, songs and orchestral works are not widely known. Müpa Budapest’s project will hopefully change that.
I believe that if, say, in 50 or 100 years, classical music is still alive, if we have descendants who listen to “sad music” and who may also be curious about what their predecessors did – that is, what we did – they will get the best, most beautiful, truest answers about this era from the works of György Orbán.

HUNGARIAN NATIONAL DANCE ENSEMBLE
HUNGARIAN NATIONAL DANCE ENSEMBLE
Captivating rhythms, elemental power, driving momentum, dazzling visuals...
The performances of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble not only bring to the stage the folk music and folk dance treasures that have been polished to perfection over the centuries, but also bring to life the fairy tales and legends of our country, the lives of our heroes who still serve as role models, as well as many outstanding events in our history. Anyone who has ever seen these large-scale, impressive historical tableaux and this monumental choreography will have been influenced by them, and the spectacle remains a lasting memory. Under the artistic direction of Zoltán Zsuráfszky and his wife Zsuzsa Vincze, who was also his partner in the creation, the ensemble has created a unique visual world, a truly national repertoire. The kind of commitment and respect with which the Kossuth Prize-winning choreographer, Artist of the Nation, approaches the folk culture of the Carpathian Basin is naturally passed on to the members of his dance company. The close spiritual bond that he has developed with his dancing and musician masters during his countless collections is still a strong source of inspiration, adding an unobtrusive emotional surplus to the dances performed. A deep and profound knowledge of the original dance and musical material and the various segments of the peasant tradition surrounding it is not an external expectation of the artists, but a leaven of cohesion, a bond that comes from within and which permeates everyday life in the 21st century. There is no need for words about the ensemble; seeing just one of their performances makes it obvious to all.
And there are plenty of performances to choose from. For decades, the authentic works based on the iconic dance films of Zsuráfszky’s master György Martin and his colleagues (Living Dance Archive) have been a defining dance experience for folk dance lovers, members of amateur and professional ensembles and the industry. The performances of Hungarian folk tales have already stolen the hearts of hundreds of children and families. A multitude of historical dance performances and thematic works, such as Szekler György Dózsa, A Tenkes
kapitánya (The Captain of the Outlaws), Egri Csillagok (Eclipse of the Crescent Moon) or Hungarian Heroes, Battles and Loves, which introduce young people to our traditional culture and the important events and heroes of our country, have been successfully performed on both smaller and larger stages in the Carpathian Basin. Their unique theatrical co-productions such as Merry-Go-Round or the legendary Passion at Csíksomlyó will certainly not leave the audience cold.
I recommend that you sit in on the performances from the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble and get closer to the colourful traditional culture, history, lore and past of the Carpathian Basin.

This publication was compiled from the entire selection of musical and literary events we have on offer for the first half of the 2023/24 season, along with the performances of the Composer of the Season and Ensemble of the Season, our dance and new circus productions, film screenings, and family and youth series. Although this time around we have not organised our events into season ticket subscriptions, we have sorted them according to genres and themes in the same way as before, so that everyone can easily find the programmes that appeal to them.

FESTIVITIES
The festivities of autumn and winter, All Saints’ Day and Christmas, are an opportunity to lift up our hearts. Music helps to do this – and to identify with what the holidays are truly about. The audience of the Two Requiems evening can remember the departed by listening to the music of György Orbán and Mozart, while the Advent concert features the Cantemus Choir Family conducted by Dénes Szabó and Soma Szabó, and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Children’s Choir conducted by Soma Dinyés. At these events, the role of vocal works is dominant, but so is that of the sacred keyboard instrument: we are able to immerse ourselves in the sound of the Queen of Instruments at the evening of Zsolt Máté Mészáros and the Béla Bartók Female Choir of Szeged, and lastly, the star of the Festivities, the Wiener Sängerknaben, performs a bouquet of the most beautiful pieces from its Christmas repertoire.

ORGAN CONCERTS
From the very beginning, Müpa Budapest’s organ concerts have contributed to the rediscovery of the instrument: to seeing the organ and its repertoire in fresh light. A great example of the original approach is László Fassang’s Ligeti evening, which combines the movements of the Hungarian master, born 100 years ago, with the music of Bach and Frescobaldi, also making use of the exciting possibilities of improvisation and light painting. German organist Sebastian Heindl revives an old tradition when, after presenting a new work by contemporary composer Moritz Eggert, he improvises incidental music for a classic in silent film history, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s Nosferatu. Zsolt Máté Mészáros and the Béla Bartók Female Choir of Szeged perform a Christmas organ concert, where we can enjoy the diversity of the instrument’s repertoire from Bach to Tchaikovsky, Franck to Vierne.

RISING STARS
What are the Rising Stars concerts about? The discovery, the surprise, the promise of major new talent. But also about other things, of course. It is about internationality, as the young artists are presented by ECHO, the European Concert Hall Organisation, across the continent. And it is about contemporary music, and the spirit of patronage, as each concert features a new composition commissioned for the occasion. This year, we are able to uncover the art of Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe, immerse ourselves in the beauty of German bassoonist Mathis Kaspar Stier ’s playing, meet a great new string quartet in the Belgian Sonoro Quartet, admire the improvisational ingenuity of Germany’s Sebastian Heindl – and be proud to have another Hungarian participant in violinist Júlia Pusker.

JAZZ / POP / WORLD
It’s going to be a lively autumn with jazz, pop and world music concerts at Müpa Budapest. The Bridging Europe Festival’s Italian culturefocused evenings feature Antonio Castrignanò and his band, who continue to rethink Salento musical traditions, as well as the Grand Dame of Italian jazz, Roberta Gambarini, accompanied by the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and will also be returning in December with Vera Tóth. Elvis Costello is back at Müpa Budapest after 10 years – this time with Steve Nieve on keyboards – as is Ludovico Einaudi for the first time since 2017, while Cory Henry has only made his fans wait 2 years. Margaret Island is creating a new world with the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company. The double trio of Jakob Bro and Joe Lovano also pays tribute to drummer Paul Motian, while the greats of the Hungarian jazz scene pay homage to Béla Szakcsi Lakatos.

How did Liszt absorb European culture with music, visual arts and literature? Why was György Ligeti in awe of African percussion music and how did it become part of his oeuvre? How does the meaning of a symphonic poem change when a composer writes for a large orchestra in the mid-19th century and for 100 metronomes at the end of the 20th century? These are the questions we are exploring in the autumn sessions of the Hungarians in the World series. You can also hear a prize-winning work from the Müpa Budapest’s 2020 Composition Competition: Dániel Csengery’s fairy tale opera transports the audience to the magical realm of Frau Holle. There will be no shortage of magic at the performance by the Budapest Dance Theatre, but the story of The Smallest Witch may even reveal that witches are not quite the same as they used to be...

BRIDGING EUROPE 2023 BUDAPEST–ROME
“European culture has always drawn strength from the mutual influences of the peoples that live and create together here. For our culture to be reborn on the basis of these traditions requires us to pursue dialogue and to meet with each other. This is what the Bridging Europe festival is all about.” (Csaba
Káel)“When we took on membership of the European family, we decided to be part of a single community. This is not a forum for selfish nations to bicker and haggle with one another, but a family of nations based on mutual respect and love. We must do something to ensure this!”
(Iván Fischer)The joint festival of Müpa Budapest and the Budapest Festival Orchestra always lends an exciting flavour to the start of the new season: besides classical concerts, it also features jazz, popular music and film screenings. At the centre of each instalment over the years of this event series launched in 2013 has been a country or group of countries with a rich and diverse culture and significant musical traditions – as a country’s music says a great deal about its inhabitants. From 2021, the concept behind the festival is changing: although the focus will remain on Europe, within this context we will be partnering with another major cultural centre and jointly organising events in both locations, thus promoting the creation of coproductions between the two countries. Our partner this September will be Rome’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, meaning a bridge is being built between Budapest and the Italian capital.

LITERARY PROGRAMMES
Series producer: TIBOR KERESZTURY
Müpa Budapest’s autumn literary programme is even more varied than usual. The Sándor Márai evening – as part of Bridging Europe – explores the Italian phase of the world-famous writer’s career with the help of the best Hungarian and Italian experts, with plenty of Márai texts and music. The representative evening reviewing the life’s work of Imre Oravecz, who turns 80 this year, highlights the unparalleled and multifaceted writing of a legend of contemporary Hungarian literature with the participation of leading actors and pianist József Balog. The Poetry Recitals at Müpa Budapest series presents its latest literary-concert theatre performance, “QJÚB – Unfolding the Cube”, a rich visual experience based on the oeuvre of János Pilinszky and Sándor Csoóri, in a live, projected set by Glowing Bulbs (Kiégő Izzók), with an installation by Szonja
DorottyaKoltay and musical accompaniment by Platon Karataev. The debut of András Visky, author of the poignant novel Kitelepítés (Deportation), one of the biggest book successes of 2022, promises to be an intimate, stirring and memorable evening.

compelling selection of the actor-writer-director’s work. Eighteen films. That’s something. Although, when you consider that this is less than a third of Woody Allen’s film output... Incredible. When did he even sleep? (I’m sure he would have a joke to make about the connection between insomnia and narcolepsy.) In 1950, he entered the world of moving pictures as a television writer. By going through his films, we not only get to know him, but also –through his work and performances – how the world has changed over seven decades. Woody Allen is a strange comedian. There is a strong culturalartistic tradition in his jokes, sayings and quips. But to make us feel a little less stunned and inadequate, he quickly helps us out of our predicament with a joke. To make us laugh. To make us understand. The rest is desire,
