2021-2022

What a year 2021-2022 has been! How different this year was from last year! Last year we were continually trying to social distance by limiting seating at football games as well as volleyball and basketball games. Masks were worn until late in the year.

This has been a year when masks were optional and stadium and gym seating were not limited. There have been endless challenges with the positive cases and time required for quarantine. This semester the time was limited to 5 days for staff and then for students.

But we are once again enjoying face-toface celebrations and graduation back at the University of North Texas in Denton. In 2020, graduation was held outdoors at Texas Motor Speedway and then was held at the Gaylord Texan in 2021 when rain threatened the planned Eagle Stadium graduation. On May 19 at 6 p.m. the Class of 2022 will cross the stage and receive diplomas.

Prom this year was held at the Marriott Solana in Westlake. Travel after district and state tournaments have resumed.

We are eagerly awaiting the opening of Argyle South Elementary in Canyon Falls. We will have space to accommodate 850 students in a Pre-Kindergarten-5th Grade school that is built as a prototype of West Elementary. Dr. Dawn Jordan who is currently at Argyle Intermediate will be the Principal at South, and Kristen Haynes will be the Assistant Principal. South will have students from the southern and eastern parts of the district. There will be three Pre-Kindergarten classes for students who qualify and those whose parents pay tuition for them to attend. This year’s tuition is $650.

The summer brings many opportunities for fun at specialty activity camps and also at athletic camps. AISD sends out a list each year for parents and students to choose from.

This year food for our elementary and intermediate students has been free, but that will not continue into 2022-2023. Our student nutrition department does a fantastic job of providing nutritious, appetizing meals for our students.

This was the first year for AISD to have a district special education department within our own district. Previously AISD had been a member of the Denton County COOP with five other districts. This has been a good transition for AISD as the growth continues. All diagnosticians, LSPs, LSSPs, and the director of special education as well as teachers are all hired by Argyle ISD’s Board. Having an independent special education department gives an opportunity for autonomy and individualization.

Currently, AISD is now projected to double in five years, per the demographic report we received in April. Argyle ISD had record home sales in 2020, 47% of which were new home transactions. Annual starts in 2021 more than doubled the annual starts of 2020.

The district has over 970 lots currently available to build on, with nearly 6,900 additional lots in the planning stages. Groundwork is currently underway on more than 1,260 lots that will impact the district in the next 1-2 years. Transfers into Argyle ISD increased by more than 36% from 2020-to 2021. AISD is forecasted to enroll nearly 8,000 students by 2026-2027 and more than 11,800 by 2031-2032.

Growth and expansion are a central focus in AISD at this time.

Telena Wright, Ed.D.

Argyle ISD Superintendent
