Notes on

CITY OF ANGELS By Tom Hatten

City of Angels opened on December 11, 1989 at the Virginia Theatre on 58th Street where it ran for 878 performances. It won that season’s Tony for best musical as well as five others—scenic design, original score, book, and two of its actors. The show’s west coast production, at our beautiful and much-missed Shubert in Century City was also a major success, and although a run in the UK in 1993 was not as large a box office hit, it nevertheless won the Olivier Award for best musical for a production at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre. The show’s Tony Award to veteran Robin Wagner (A Chorus Line, Hair, On the 20th Century) was perhaps the least unexpected for City of Angels: Wagner had actually done scenic design for two plots weaved into one; a screenwriter’s colorful Hollywood of the 1940’s and the film noir content of his murder mystery, for one marvelous, devilishly clever, and very funny theatrical evening. The show’s creative team was a trio composed of two gents who had previous Broadway credits; book writer Larry Gelbart (Sly Fox, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum); and composer (and jazz pianist extraordinaire) Cy Coleman (Little Me, Sweet Charity, Barnum, On the 20th Century). The third member of the talented trio David Zippel, making his Broadway debut at age 35 was doing so after a change of careers from practicing law to what quickly became that of a very successful lyricist, mostly for film. The late Mr. Gelbart, who died in 2009 at age 81 was of course prolific away from Broadway as well. He co-created M*A*S*H and such films as Oh, God! and Tootsie. Cy Coleman was 75 when stricken by cardiac arrest in 2004 and left behind such pop standards as “Witchcraft” and “The Best is Yet to Come,” written with Carolyn Leigh. And Mr. Zippel? Well, the man who has famously remarked that when working on City of Angels he was “the only person in the room who I’ve never heard of” has been writing lyrics almost non-stop since, mostly for films, often at Disney. His songs from Hercules, Mulan, and The Wedding Planner added much to their success, and for 2011’s top box office hit Captain America: The First Avenger, his lyrics are those for “Star Spangled Man.”

So I’d say these days, Mr. Zippel is often the only person in the room whom everybody has heard of.

New Roads School is a diverse and cohesive educational community, reflective of the kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, and orientations that make our larger Los Angeles community so vibrant. We believe that a meaningful 21st century education must include a diverse cohort as well as integration with the larger community in order to prepare students for conscientious participatory lives and not merely to ready them for college.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded over fifteen years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Thursday and Friday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
