Notes on
DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY By Tom Hatten
Death Takes a Holiday began life as an Italian stage fantasy, an adaptation of La Morte in Vacanza, a play by Alberto Casella. The English language version was a big success in the 1929 Broadway season, with Phillip Merivale as the play’s most unusual title character. Since that time the show has been in the Samuel French catalog and for many years it was one of the most often-produced plays by community theatre groups in cities large and small across the country. Paramount filmed it in 1934 with Fredric March in the lead, and it popped up in a TV version in 1974 starring Melvyn Douglas. With such a history, it seems surprising that a musical version was so long in arriving, but arrive it did at New York’s Roundabout in 2011 and MTG is extremely happy to be presenting its Los Angeles premiere. Composer/Lyricist Maury Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel, Titanic) and his friend and Titanic librettist Peter Stone (1776, The Will Rogers Follies, Woman of the Year, My One and Only) were at work on this show when Mr. Stone died in 2003, and Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) agreed to take over on the book. The musical opened in July 2011 for a limited run through September. The reviews were mixed, but Mr. Yeston’s score received almost unanimous plaudits and was one of the show’s 11 nominations for the 20112012 season’s Drama Desk Awards. “Turner Classic Movies” host Robert Osborne, in response to my inquiry, confirmed my hunch that TCM doesn’t have 1934’s Death Takes a Holiday in its library. It has never aired on the channel, but it’s possible that a lot of tonight’s audience may notice that another film (of much more recent vintage) has played on a big screen near them and has Death’s plot, or at least seems to. 1998’s Meet Joe Black with Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt. Updated considerably, yes, but unfortunately DOA at the box office. Addendum: Just for fun, and to give you a chance to show how brilliant you are, can you name another much-performed play, also in the Samuel French catalog since its Broadway success in 1938, which also featured Death as a character—and who was on stage for the entire three acts, never leaving until the final curtain? Hint—or Spoiler Alert if you prefer: Death spent almost the entire evening in a tree?
Ah, too easy.
On Borrowed Time.

New Roads School is a diverse and cohesive educational community, reflective of the kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, and orientations that make our larger Los Angeles community so vibrant. We believe that a meaningful 21st century education must include a diverse cohort as well as integration with the larger community in order to prepare students for conscientious participatory lives and not merely to ready them for college.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded over fifteen years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Friday and Saturday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Sunday. On Monday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
