“I love so many flowers, and I worship roses,” rhapsodizes world-renowned floral and fragrance designer Eric Buterbaugh, president and creative director of L.A.-based Eric Buterbaugh Los Angeles and EB Florals by Eric Buterbaugh. “But I think my ultimate favorite is the peony.” A “gorgeous and opulent” blossom of showy extravagance and flounce, it has a big personality—not unlike Buterbaugh himself. He, too, is a bit of a showman who intrinsically understands the power of presentation. His is no garden-variety talent. His flair with flora has propelled him to the highest echelon of his profession; he designs for royalty, celebrities, and basically the entire fashion world (for every Gwyneth Paltrow, there is a Chanel). With a well-received fragrance collection and a West Hollywood flagship on Melrose Avenue now in his repertoire, the Eric Buterbaugh lifestyle brand is abloom—its inspiration, an obsession.
Arts - Buterbaugh
“I have always been drawn to flowers,” Buterbaugh says. “They are the most beautiful things in nature to me. Sometimes if you look at a flower, you cannot believe how gorgeous it is.” The same can be said for his designs. “Arrangements” does not quite encapsulate the depth of his skill or artistry—he is an experimenter of great imagination and touch. His creations—a much better description of his work—are delicate, but they dance too. One can almost see the young Buterbaugh, standing at the edge of his father’s “gorgeous” tulip garden, flush with wonder at the sight of the brightly colored bulbs. Did he know then how defining flowers would be in his life, as they are in all aspects of life? “They resonate in every area,” he says. “In fashion, décor, all design. Also, flowers make people happy, so for that to be my medium is such a win!” Making his way to Los Angeles from London, where he began his career at Versace, Buterbaugh found the perfect town for his talent. In L.A., a breeding ground for reinvention, his natural instinct for floral design, nurtured by his understanding of fashion and fantasy, took root. His flower arrangements for a friend’s event were quickly noticed and, as word spread, Buterbaugh blossomed into a society favorite, appointed floral designer in residence at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles until he moved Eric Buterbaugh Los Angeles to a standalone space on Melrose. “Having such wonderful clients and friends has allowed me to work in the most amazing places,” Buterbaugh says graciously, careful not to boast, though he certainly could. “Windsor Castle, the Fenice Opera house in Venice, Castle Leslie in Ireland, on and on. Building a garden in the middle of Times Square for Gucci was a major highlight.”

ust as Buterbaugh followed his instinct and relocated to L.A., he followed his nose into fragrance and, in 2015, with industry expert Fabrice Croisé, bowed EB Florals by Eric Buterbaugh. Pure fantasia, created in concert with master perfumers and the very best ingredients, the collection includes 19 unisex scents— each centered on the character of a particular flower—and six candles. Bottled in exquisite crystal and featuring glamorous toppers, these complex scents, ranging from Celestial Jasmine to Regal Tuberose, are in a class with floral classics of fragrance history. They also bring Buterbaugh full circle. “Having my own fragrance line was always a dream for me,” says Buterbaugh, who is particularly smitten with EB Florals Velvet Lavender. “I loved anything with fragrance growing up. When I conceived and ultimately launched Eric Buterbaugh Florals, my vision was to be the best. I love luxury, I love quality. I think we succeeded.” So much so, Buterbaugh is his own brand ambassador (who better?) and, this year, is marketing EB Florals by Eric Buterbaugh on a global scale, expanding the brand with pop-ups and supporting it at luxury retail, where it is sold at outlets from Paris to his own operations in in L.A.—a gorgeous flower shop, perfumery and gallery that functions, as he puts it, a gathering space for fashion, art and creatives. “I love the energy that the space exudes,” he says. “People come here and are happy.” A place, in other words, where one is always welcome to stop and smell the roses. ericbuterbaugh.com

t is no coincidence that Gordes has inspired many artists—Marc Chagall, Victor Vasarely, André Lhote, Pol Mara—and that it continues to fascinate travelers from all over the planet. Built on a rocky promontory in the heart of a charming area of the Luberon, in the south of France, it is considered one of the most beautiful, picturesque villages in the country. With its medieval ramparts, cobbled streets, dry stone houses, terraced gardens, oil press, fountains and markets, Gordes invites every visitor to journey through time. The natural light, color and scent of lavender fields, yew trees and vineyards, and the great number of old traditions make this place unique, both capturing and reflecting the essence of Provence. In this fascinating setting, a sublime property revives the spirit of bygone castles, honoring history with a twist of subtle modernity. Member of the LOV Hotel Collection, La Bastide de Gordes is a five-star luxury property from the 16th century with a magical atmosphere. In the summer of 2015, the hotel reopened its doors after a more than $23 million renovation that transformed almost 108,000 square feet into an exclusive refuge comprising five buildings with 34 rooms and six suites, plus a private villa, three restaurants, four pools, an 8,600-square-foot Sisley spa inspired by majestic abbeys, five conference and event rooms (including one for weddings facing a garden à la française), seven terraces and several gardens. “Our aim,” says interior architect Christophe Tollemer, who worked on the makeover, “was to give the feeling that nothing has changed since the 18th century.”
In order to preserve architectural unity and facilitate circulation from one building to another, a large vaulted tunnel was built into the rock and lined with bookshelves, covering over 1.2 miles.
Wanderlust - France
Accordingly, every piece of furniture, lamp, rug, mirror, marble sculpture, candlestick and ceramic was sourced in antique shops and auction houses of France, Italy or Switzerland. All stones added for the renovation are from the area, some of which date back to the 16th century. Other materials were recovered from castles of the same period. All told, the hotel is home to some 3,000 pieces of furniture, including 18th century-old terra-cotta floor tiles, portraits and a fireplace and 17th-century armchairs in the living room. Adorning every nook is artwork from the collection of La Bastide de Gordes, which includes 2,000 old paintings.
In the bar, decorated with hand-painted panels, a beautiful winding staircase with wrought iron railings leads to L’Orangerie and Citadelle restaurants, both offering the best of Provencal cuisine and Mediterranean ingredients with magnificent views and authentic decor. The interior of L’Orangerie features exposed beams and large windows, while La Citadelle showcases vaulted ceilings and wood paneling. And, led by famous chef Pierre Gagnaire, the gourmet, Michelinstarred restaurant Pèir honors the flavors of the region in an intimate eight-table dining room furnished with bespoke pieces by the aforementioned Christophe Tollemer, a 17th-century stone fireplace and an old wood oven. Overlooking the valley, the restaurant’s terrace is the perfect place to admire the unparalleled panorama. In order to preserve architectural unity and facilitate circulation from one building to another, a large vaulted tunnel was built into the rock and lined with bookshelves, covering over 1.2 miles. The hotel houses 40 rooms and suites, each of which has its own decor and identity, yet all are simultaneously welcoming and sophisticated, incorporating an aristocratic style from Provence.

Herringbone parquet flooring, sublime taut fabrics, wood paneling, lime-rendered walls and period tapestries characterize the luxurious private spaces. Spread over 645 square feet, one of the suites is dedicated to Victor Vasarely, who fell in love with Gordes during a visit there with his wife in 1948. Some years later, the artist donated 430 of his original artworks to the village, resulting in the opening of a museum in 1970 and then the launch of the Vasarely Foundation (located today in the nearby city of Aix-en-Provence). In the hotel’s Vasarely suite, a writing desk invites inspiration while the library opens the doors to the artist’s world. In all areas is patina created by Louis Daniel Jouve—who has worked alongside Tollemer for more than 15 years—from olive and oak leaf friezes in some bedrooms to artistic frescoes in the bathrooms. Under the supervision of Project Manager Pascal Chataing, a number of

craftsmen—carpenters, plasterers, bricklayers, painters, mosaicists, etc.—also participated in the hotel’s detailed renovation. A highlight is La Maison de Constance. Surrounded by linden, fig, cypress, olive and almond trees and linked to La Bastides de Gordes by lovely gardens, this intimate residence can host up to 12 people in five bedrooms. Elsewhere, four swimming pools and large wooded terraces with exceptional views are all possessions of the immaculate property. Providing an authentic Provencal experience to discover the true meaning of the French art of living, La Bastide de Gordes pays tribute to the Luberon’s delightful cultural and natural heritage. “It is,” describes Tollemer, “a dream for all those who never had the chance to own a family retreat.” A dream, and a vision. labastidedegordes.airellescollection.com

pectacular and futuristic, recently inaugurated Tianjin Binhai Library is a masterpiece located about 160 miles southeast of Beijing, and designed by Dutch firm MVRDV in collaboration with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. With China making innovation integral to every new project—including Guangzhou Opera House by Zaha Hadid Architects and Beijing Capital International Airport—the country has become a source of fascination and inspiration. No exception, the library is part of a larger master plan of almost 1,300,000 square feet from German architects GMP, which aims to provide a cultural district for the city of Tianjin. Surrounded by four other buildings designed by international architects Bernard Tschumi Architects, Bing Thom Architects, HH Design and GMP, and spread over five levels, the 362,000-square-foot space took only three years to complete. Central to the project is a spherical auditorium and floor-to-ceiling undulating bookcases. “An oval opening punctured through the building is propped open by the Eye,” says MVDRV co-founder, Winy Maas, “a luminous sphere with an auditorium, which takes the main stage within the atrium and enlarges the perceived space within.” Adds Maas: “The Eye is the center of the library. It ‘hollows out’ the building and creates, out of bookshelves, an environment to sit, to read, to hang out, to climb and to access, [and] to create an organic social space. In its heart is the auditorium, which mirrors the environment, giving a 360-degree panorama of the space inside; a truly reflective and pensive environment.”
Design - China
Walking amid a sheltered gallery, topped with cathedral-like vaulted arches, visitors discover reading rooms, lounge areas, meeting rooms and computer labs in an all-white décor. Describing the project as “hug” between media and knowledge, Maas explains: “The angles and curves are meant to stimulate different uses of the space, such as reading, walking, meeting and discussing.” Designed as an education center and a social space, the library also connects to a nearby park, located in the cultural district of the city. Inside, explain the architects, “Terraced bookshelves, which echo the form of the sphere, create an interior topographical landscape whose contours reach out and wrap around the façade.”
The basement comprises book storage and a large archive, while the ground floor offers access to reading areas, the auditorium, main entrance, upper levels and two rooftop patios, the result of careful planning by MVRDV, whose work is driven by spatial innovation. Always focusing on the social and environmental integration and impacts of buildings, MVRDV’s projects carefully take into account the influence of architecture on the everyday lives of its inhabitants and users. With a capacity to hold 1 million books, the library currently hosts 200,000 volumes, with its objective to increase this number each year. Perforated aluminum plates with pictures of books were printed to adorn the upper shelves. “Through its design, the complex will become a junction point for the Central Business District, old town, residential districts, commercial areas and the government quarter; hoping to compensate for any missing program in each,” say the architects. Not only is the library an urban living destination, having attracted scores of visitors it is a contemporary architectural gem—and a rare one, too. mvrdv.nl

rag rugs and other elements of American country style, she is widely credited as having originated the “undecorated” look. More than derivative, her designs were cozy and contrasting, with heirloom quality and a fresh charm of refinements. They were white wicker and needlepoint pillows. Floral art and painted lampshades. And rich, confident color. So particular was Sister Parish about color, she would turn up at a worksite, tomato in hand, so that a paint of its precise shade be mixed—on the spot.
conic American designer Sister Parish was a traditionalist with cultured East Coast roots and an Anglophile’s admiration for chintz and a good pink. She adored painted floors and four-poster beds; a quilt with which to upholster a sofa then pair with a Chippendale chair. Yet she was more innovative than old-fashioned, a woman who summered in Maine but based her celebrated design firm in Manhattan. She believed full heart in quality, aesthetic endurance and a patrician’s touch. But “The future,” says her granddaughter Susan Crater, president of Sister Parish Design, “that was her thing.”
The legacy of Sister Parish lives on in Sister Parish Design, a company that owns the Parish-Hadley trademark and is run by her descendants— granddaughter Crater, daughter Apple Bartlett and great-granddaughter Eliza Crater. Much like Sister Parish helped define American style, the company is a quintessential American business that manufactures its products, from fabrics and wallcoverings to pillows and ceramics, in facilities in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. In showrooms across the globe, from Singapore to Los Angeles (Holland & Sherry at Pacific Design Center), Sister Parish Design may reference an earlier age and aesthetic, but it’s a modern company in both design and direction.
Born Dorothy May Kinnicutt in 1910, then nicknamed “Sister,” the legendary designer was the daughter of wealthy parents who owned apartments in Paris and New York, as well as homes in New Jersey and Maine. Her father, a stockbroker, also collected antiques. The family’s extensive travels abroad exposed the impressionable young socialite to many cultures for which she developed an interest if not a fluency. Unschooled in design, Sister Parish was nevertheless vibrantly educated, most formatively in the great houses of Europe. Vitally, she had the very thing that cannot be taught—instinct. “She would probably use the word imagination,” says Crater, remembering her grandmother as a strong personality, a great storyteller and a woman of many friends who loved to laugh. “It was absolutely visceral with her.”
Heritage - Sister Parish
“People misunderstand that we’re old-fashioned,” says Susan, “but we have a lot of graphic and abstract prints that translate very well to a contemporary style. We wanted the company to be somewhere in the middle of the different ParishHadley perspectives.”
However romantic was Sister Parish’s gut sense for design, her six-decade career began as a practical way to help with family finances hit hard during the Great Depression. It was, however, what propelled her from the one-room practice she established in Far Hills, New Jersey, in the early 1930s, to the halls of the Kennedy White House, which she famously helped redecorate with hire Albert Hadley, her eventual partner in ParishHadley Associates and her aesthetic opposite—he with the modern eye, she the freedom. Theirs was a partnership that attracted blue-blooded clients with names like Getty, Rockefeller and Whitney.
This it has accomplished with a Parish-Hadley Collection with Lee Jofa and collaborations with scores of today’s top designers. This year comes a series of new launches for the company, including a collection of writing paper with Dempsey & Carroll, more prints and additional showrooms. Sister Parish Design is exploring a turn toward tile too, fearlessly moving into the future without losing sight of the past. “Our motto is something that Sister said about reaching into the past and taking out what is good and what is lasting and what is beautiful,” says Crater. “We’re creating something to last. She really loved family, and I think she’d be proud.” sisterparishdesign.com
Sister Parish’s great gift was articulating the highest level of taste without affect or conceit. One of the first practitioners of high-low design, she blended pattern, texture and color in one elegant, unstudied swoop. For using slipcovers, ticking,

“ ” I'm so proud of how the CHOC Gala has evolved over the years but it wouldn't have been possible without the support of our donors. -Heather Madden

the giving kind Marcy Weinstein’s beautiful estate in Newport Coast overlooking the shimmering Pacific coastline played host to an exclusive underwriting party benefitting the 10th Annual CHOC Children’s Gala, established to raise awareness and funds for CHOC Children’s effort to help heal sick children. Presented by its gala committee, along with founding member and this year’s gala chair, Heather Madden, the altruistic event welcomed guests to gather for an evening of grace and gratitude, featuring cocktails, hors d’oeuvres by award-winning restaurant Selanne Steak Tavern (co-owned by hockey legend Teemu Selanne) and delectable cupcakes from Sugar Rush Sweet Shoppe.

During the evening, guests made their way into Weinstein’s grand dining area, charmingly adorned with her personal collection of treasured nutcrackers and stunning holiday décor. There they were truly touched by the spirit of the season, as Madden launched into an impromptu speech. After sharing her memories of working with the gala committee and advocating for CHOC’s Children, beginning in 2004 as a volunteer, Madden announced her gift for this year’s gala. This kicked off a series of unscripted, heartfelt remarks of support from Weinstein, CHOC Children’s President and CEO Kimberly Cripe, and Regional Vice President Michael Moser at Harry Winston, who also promised a significant financial commitment for the fifth year, plus a 10 percent purchase contribution from “CHOC lovers” toward this year’s gala. And, in tribute to the evening’s generosity, donors placed floating candles in the moonlit pool—illuminating the benevolence felt by all. As one of CHOC’s most important fundraisers, this year’s CHOC Children’s Gala raised $2.7 million, aiding in education, research and patient care at CHOC Children’s.
