Aventura is located on the northeast of Miami Dade County. It is north of Bal Harbour and west of Golden Beach and Sunny Isles. The city of the many luxurious communities.
myamimagazine.com
>> by Millie Cibeira Besides the excellent location, Aventura offers all the amenities for a luxury life in South Florida, including wonderful views, upscale shops, unique restaurant, privileged education and quality properties. Since it’s located at north of Miami, Aventura offers a high life without the heavy traffic of Coral Gables or the driving hours to Boca Raton. The high
level of education and a modern community center, makes from Aventura an ideal place for the family. Also, given that the crime rate is 30% below the national average, parents can feel safe to let their children use public transportation through the city such as The Aventura Express. Most of what would later become the City of Aventura was initially developed during
the late 1970s and into the 80s as a high-rise residential area by Oxford Development Company, when the area was still mostly swampland known as “Biscayne Gardens”. Although Aventura functions as a separate city, incorporated in 1995, it is still served by MiamiDade Fire and rescue, and the official addresses in Aventura are still Miami addresses. Aventura
holds and funds its own police department, which was formed in 1997. Attractions Aventura Mall: Perhaps one of the most famous attractions is the Aventura Mall, an indoor shopping center located in the center of the city. It is the largest conventional shopping mall in Florida,
The Mall is currently anchored by Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, J.C. Penney, Macy’s (in two separate locations), Sears, and AMC Aventura 24 Theatres. Shoppes at the Waterways: An attractive open-air plaza on the intracoastal waterway. Formerly Waterways Shoppes Surrounded by residential properties and Town homes,
the Shoppes at the Waterways is an intimate, boutique-style shopping center, consisting of over 25 stores and restaurants. It was built around the Aventura Marina offering spectacular views of the harbor and luxury yachts. Adorned with tropical palm trees and a large courtyard fountain, residents and tourists seek this center out for unusual women’s clothing, fine art,

outdoor dining, and conversation under the stars. Lohemann’s Fashion Island An extraordinary openair shopping, dining and entertainment center, Loehmann’s Fashion Island offers the customer a distinctive collection of fine gifts, fashion and home furnishings boutiques and a variety of dining venues

having a gross leasable area of 2,700,000 square feet, and is the fifth largest shopping center in the United States. The mall has three floors of retail space, comprising 300 stores. In addition there is a food court with eighteen fast food eateries, as well as several chains and other restaurants at the mall’s entrance.

from casual cafes to gourmet restaurants, some featuring live entertainment. All of this, in an intimate, casual setting with colorful, fresh flowers under bright canopies surrounded by sidewalk cafes. At the center of the attraction is the worldfamous Loehmann’s discount department store with designer labels for men and women. Founders Park As its name implies, Founders Park honors the visionary leaders whose brilliant foresight and guidance contributed to the creation of Aventura, the “City of Excellence.” Situated on 12 acres south of Lehman Causeway, Founders Park in Aventura is divided into two sections. The northern region is free for Aventura residents
and features clay tennis courts and a pro shop, an exercise trail with fitness stations, and a playground. To the south, the bayside area is open to the public with tropically landscaped walking paths, including one that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. Founders Park in Aventura is located close to homes for sale in Country Club Estates and condos in Porto Vita.
Operation: Monday - Sunday 8am - 6pm. Call 305-466-8008 for more information. This park is free to Aventura residents.
Waterways Park Waterways Park is located at 3301 NE 213th Street. This 7-acre park features a covered playground, exercise path with 2 fitness stations, outdoor basketball court, multipurpose lighted athletic fields, covered patio, outdoor shelter, restrooms and park office. Hours of
Community Recreation Center Community Recreation Center plays host to multiple programs and activities offered by the City of Excellence. From Computer Classes to Jazz Dance, and our state-of-the-art Tech Center, there is something to do for every member of the family.
Veterans Park Veterans Park is located at 18375 NE 31 Avenue. This two acre park features a covered playground, soccer net, and open play area for children. Restrooms were added to the park in 2010.
Kids spend fun-filled days in our popular Summer Camp program and parents have their choice of programs and classes to workout mind and body. Exercise Path The 3-mile exercise path circling the Turnberry Isle Resort Golf Course, Aventura Estate Homes, Delvista Condos, and Coronado Condos is along Country Club Drive. This is a popular place to walk, run, jog, rollerblade and bike. This ten-foot wide pathway is landscaped with an abundance of shade trees, complete with ground lighting, benches, trash receptacles and crosswalks. For residents with pets, convenient bags and receptacles are available in pooper scooper boxes along the path.

History of Aventura Mall In April 1983, the Oxford Development Company, led by partners Donny Soffer, Edward J. Lewis and Ray Parello officially dedicated Aventura Mall. There would be four anchors in the original, 1.2E+6-square-foot (111,000 m2), complex: Lord and Taylor (the first operational store, which had opened January 31, 1983), J.C. Penney (opened April 28, 1983), Sears (opened July 6, 1983) and Macy’s (the first in Florida; in a three story structure with Spanish architecture which became the template for future Macy’s in South Florida) {dedicated October 1, 1983}. On board as an original investor in the project was malldeveloper Edward J. DeBartolo Sr.. The mall was originally designed to accommodate a
fifth anchor, and there was even a section of drywall in place where its mall entrance would be located. Soon after its construction Soffer left Oxford. As part of the break-up of assets, Soffer’s new firm, Turnberry Associates assumed control of the Aventura Mall. In 1996 the DeBartolo Realty Corporation, which owned the minority interest once held by Edward J. DeBartolo, was acquired by Simon Property Group. In 1996, ground was broken for a major expansion of Aventura Mall. The addition, built onto the southeast end of the existing complex, consisted of a threestory atrium with an AMC Theatres multiplex cinema and restaurants at a new entrance. A rare two-story Rainforest
Café also opened, but was closed just a few years later and a Zara clothing store took its space. Part of the new development were two three-story parking garages surrounding the new anchor stores’ southeast facades. Two of the original anchors, J.C. Penney and Lord and Taylor, were enlarged and two department stores were built to anchor the addition. A threestory Bloomingdale’s came inline November 8, 1997, with the new southeast mall wing being dedicated in December. The mall’s three-story Burdines opened August 1, 1999. Burdines and Macy’s were merged in early 2004 by their common parent, Federated Department Stores, to form Burdines-Macy’s and a year
later “simply” Macy’s. Both locations at Aventura Mall were retained, with the original Macy’s being devoted to Women’s and Kids’ Fashions, and the former Burdines location housing Men’s and Home Furnishings departments. Lord & Taylor closed their store the same year as they withdrew from the Floridian market. In July, 2005, Nordstrom announced they would construct a store adjacent to the former Lord & Taylor, which would itself be demolished and rebuilt as additional mall retail space. As part of the pending Nordstrom wing expansion, the rest of the mall underwent a $20 million renovation in late-2006. The Nordstorm wing officially opened on February 15, 2008.

Stars share how they survive so many awards show >>by SANDY COHEN AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Getting through Hollywood’s awards season is no easy feat. It looks like a glamorous celebration on TV, but awards are serious business here. Nominees, especially the famous ones, face a repeated challenge: They must look gorgeous and be gracious again and again as they win or lose the most coveted honors in their business in front of a worldwide audience. Plus, there are so many parties, so many interviews, so many events and appearances and screenings and outfits that, for the leading nominees, the first two months of the year almost become one flashbulb-illuminated, Champagne-soaked blur. With the Oscars around the corner capping off two months of glittery celebration, here’s a look
at stars’ views on awards season and how they’re surviving:
_ Oscar winner Ben Affleck says this time of year is a strange one that stretches beyond the stars. ``The notion of awards season, it is like you have spring, summer, fall, winter and awards season. It somehow has gotten firmly entrenched in our kind of culture in a way that seems to have expanded a bit over the years. I don’t know if I could give anybody advice. It is a difficult thing to navigate.’’ _ Supporting actress nominee Amy Adams,
who has been up for an Oscar twice before, has some practical advice: ``Hydrate. That is my key this year, drink a lot of water. It sounds silly, but that is the first thing that came to mind. Try to get a lot of sleep and hang out with your friends as much as you can. Be in the moment.’’ _ Geoffrey Rush is practical, too. ``I think, you know, make sure you have
a couple of poached eggs on toast and maybe a small shot of vodka on the day.’’ _ Helena Bonham Carter has done it before with style. ``I think you’ve got to pace yourself, and also say no a lot. Because it is a bit of an onslaught. It’s an onslaught, so you’ve got to keep an even keel and keep a sense of proportion. And maybe I’ll try wearing matching shoes this time. I was wearing mismatching shoes on the Globes, and apparently there was horror at this major fashion misdemeanor. ... So I don’t know, just keep a sense of humor and enjoy it.’’ _ Australian actress Jackie Weaver, nominated for her supporting role in ``Animal Kingdom,’’ offers this international perspective: ``It’s a juggernaut. It’s a huge military operation. ... This is a billion dollar industry in America. It gives millions of people work. It is taken very seriously. Whereas we are a small country in Australia _ only 22 million people. We make a handful of films every year.’’ _ Kevin Spacey celebrates, win or lose. ``I’ve only been to the Academy Awards nominated twice and I’ve won twice. That’s a very different circumstance than for example ... going to the Golden Globes, having been nominated six times and not winning again. How do you deal with that? You go to
the bar and you end up hanging out with all your friends and your colleagues and people you don’t see for a long time because that’s what you do at the Globes. There’s no bar at the Oscars, which is something they really ought to reconsider.’’ _ ``The Social Network’’ screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who has won six Emmys for ``The West Wing’’ and is up for his first Oscar, says he’ll just take it all in. ``I just keep my head down and remember that, you know, this is all fun. And enjoy every minute of it with the guys I made the movie with.’’ _ Trent Reznor, who’s nominated for his score for ``The Social Network,’’ says he used to stay away from awards shows when he was with Nine Inch Nails, but he’s going to the Oscars. ``I’ve also realized that the whole experience is worth allowing myself to kind of take a pause and experience it. My nature is to isolate in a room and just work. As I’ve gotten a little more comfortable in my own skin, I’m forcing myself to kind of be in the moment and make the best of it, and it’s actually been pretty enjoyable. Sometimes in an absurd way, and a very surreal way, it’s been interesting.’’ _ Hans Zimmer has been nominated nine times (this time for ``Inception’’), so he knows what he’s talking
about. ``One of the things is thank your mom. Second survival guide: Drink more water than you are normally used to, because you will be out late and drinking. If you can, wear comfortable shoes because your feet are going to kill you after you have been to all the parties. Then, my publicist Ronnie Chasen, use to say to me, ‘Don’t say anything stupid.’ So I always remember that one. I don’t succeed at that one completely, but I take that
one on board.’’ _ Fourteen-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, nominated for supporting actress for her first movie role (in ``True Grit’’), is taking her folks’ advice. ``My parents have always told me, ‘If you have fun, then you are always in the right place.’ So, as long as you are loving it and having fun, then it’s all good.’’

Born seven months after George took the British throne in 1936, screenwriter Seidler grew up paralyzed by the same impediment he depicts the monarch struggling to overcome in ``The King’s Speech,’’ the best-picture favorite at the Academy Awards. From just before his third birthday to age 16, Seidler stumbled and sputtered over his syllables so badly that he lived in terror of speaking in class, talking to girls, even answering the phone. “I had huge trouble with the `H’ sound, so when the telephone rang, I would break into a cold sweat, because I couldn’t say hello,’’ Seidler, 73, said in an interview. “I don’t know if school still works this way, but in those days you had set places, and the teacher worked up and down the rows. If I could see her working toward me and she was just going to miss me that day, I would fake sick the next day so I didn’t have to go to school, because it was so terrifying to be called upon. There came a period when I was actually excused from responding in class. I didn’t have to speak in class. It was that bad.’’ Born in Britain, Seidler developed a stammer in 1940 on a boat to the United States, where his family moved during World War II. Seidler, who had an uncle with a boyhood stammer, figures his own began from the trauma of German bombs, the sea voyage and abrupt separation from his beloved nanny. As George VI rallied his country, the young Seidler heard the king valiantly struggling through his radio addresses and hoped he might one day master his own speech troubles. He eventually did, in his mid-teens, not long after George VI died in 1952 and the crown passed to his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. Soon after that, the desire to one day chronicle the king’s tale came to Seidler, who had decided he wanted to be a writer while still afflicted with his stutter. “If you’re born with two conflicting traits _ in my case, I was a born ham, but I was a stutterer _ and if you want to be the center of attention but you can’t talk, you find another channel, and that’s writing,’’ Seidler

Oscar's winners' envelope made over with new look
Like many a star attending the Academy Awards, Oscar’s winners’ envelope is getting a makeover. >>by SANDY COHEN
AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) For 70 years, the envelope _ as in ``the envelope, please’’ _ was nothing more than a plain, white paper envelope, the kind available at any office supply store. This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is glamming up the way it unveils the names of those winning the industry’s highest honor: It’s replacing the plain white envelope with a custom-designed keepsake envelope and announcement card that looks great on TV. ``The idea of the envelope was created by the Oscars, so this really is THE envelope,’’ says Steve Bass, the production designer for this year’s show who helped usher in a new envelope era. ``It made so much sense to heighten the visual experience of what the envelope is.’’ The new envelope, designed by Marc Friedland, is made of iridescent gold paper watermarked with little images of Oscar. It’s lined with shiny
red paper embossed with gold Oscars. The winner’s name appears on a heavy piece of lacquered red paper inside, with the category listed on the back. The envelope will be sealed with a shiny red sticker adorned with two strips of red ribbon. It was also designed for ease of use: It opens quickly and the card inside slides out smoothly, so no precious papers will be torn or mangled during the award announcement. ``There’s no more significant moment than the anticipation that comes with opening the envelope. It’s the most iconic, symbolic envelope in the world,’’ says Friedland, whose company produces invitations for celebrities and corporate events. ``Using a store-bought envelope is like showing up to the Academy Awards in shorts and flip-flops.’’ Friedland says he had long been frustrated with the look of Oscar’s envelope. It was ``more functional
than iconic,’’ he says, explaining that the envelope was first introduced to the Oscar ceremony after a winner’s name had leaked out early. Oscar producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer decided this was the year they’d upgrade the envelope. They turned to Friedland, who calls himself ``the stationer to the stars,’’ about two weeks ago. He says took design cues from the look of this year’s Oscar set. ``It has an elegant Hollywood regency feel to it,’’ Friedland says. Academy officials haven’t decided if they will redesign the Oscar envelope each year or stick with Friedland’s red-and-gold design for future shows. The stationer called it ``the most important envelope in the world’’ and says designing it has been the highlight of his 25-year career. He will also be attending the Feb. 27 ceremony. But he still won’t learn the winners’ names early.
His deadline for the finished envelopes is the same day Oscar ballots are due: Feb. 22. Since the only people on Earth who know the Oscar winners in advance are two accountants at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Friedland prepared insert cards for each of the nominees. It’s up to the accountants to stuff and seal the envelopes properly and shred any leftovers. He said he hopes the new envelopes become ``a keepsake to accompany Oscars wherever they go.’’ Bass, a two-time Emmy winner, says, ``You keep the envelope. It’s a huge part of the memory as well as the actual statue.’’ The attention to the envelope on this year’s Oscars is indicative of the producers’ overall approach to the telecast, Bass says: ``The envelope is just the tip of the iceberg for what people are going to experience on the show this year in a new, fresh way.’’

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) Oscar fans and fashionistas can see the dress contestants online and vote once daily for their favorite until Monday 21. The winning gown _ and the model wearing it _ will appear onstage during the Oscar ceremony. Designer Clay Sadler (8) said seeing his floor-sweeping, creamcolored creation on the big show ``would be a lifelong dream.’’ ``Even as a child, I would watch the Oscars and say, `One day I will have a dress on that stage,’’’ Sadler said Tuesday after displaying his dress alongside those of the eight other contest finalists at a fashion show at academy headquarters. Now in its third year, the Oscars Designer Challenge puts a glamorous aspect of the show directly into fans’ hands and gives up-and-coming fashion designers unprecedented exposure, said coordinator Toni Pickett. Pickett’s team perused sketches submitted by more than 30 designers to select the nine finalists vying for Oscar’s spotlight. ``For those who don’t have the ability to contact celebrities, this can help springboard them to the next level,’’ she said, adding that one of last year’s finalists, Oday Shakar, went on to design the black, backless dress Sandra Bullock wore to the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. ``It was her comeback dress,’’ Pickett said. Shakar was discovered by the star’s stylist through Oscars Designer Challenge. This year’s contestants come from all over the country, and their submissions range from simple and sleek to bold and dramatic. One body-skimming black gown, designed by James De Colon (9), looked like it was made of liquid metal, with feathers covering the neckline and forming a little tail in back. It wasn’t the only black, feathertrimmed design. Chicago-based

Root canal
>> by Dr Valeria Soltanik
(dmd p.a. dn16609)
Root canal therapy refers to the process by which a dentist treats the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically that area inside a tooth that is occupied by its “pulp tissue.” Most people would probably refer to a tooth’s pulp tissue as its “nerve.” While a tooth’s pulp tissue does contain nerve fibers it is also composed of arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue. Teeth are hard calcified objects but their inner aspects are not completely solid. Inside every tooth there lies a hollow space which, when a tooth is healthy, contains the tooth’s nerve tissue. Dentists use the following terms to refer to various portions of this nerve area Initially a tooth’s nerve tissue plays an important role in the formation and development of the tooth. Then, once the tooth has formed, the function of this tissue becomes one of helping to preserve the tooth’s health and vitality. The nerve tissue keeps the organic components of the tooth’s mineralized tissues (dentin and enamel) supplied with nutrients and moisture. The nerve tissue also produces new tooth structure (reparative dentin) as is needed so to help to wall off and protect the nerve from advancing tooth decay A tooth’s nerve tissue does provide a sensory function but this role is probably different from what you expect. Under normal circumstances the nerves inside our teeth provide us with very little information. Yes, when activated by extremes in pressure, temperature, or cracked or advancing tooth decay, teeth do respond with a painful sensation. But under normal circumstances the nerves inside our teeth remain relatively “quiet.” At this point you might be thinking that if you push on your tooth with a finger or close your
teeth together you will feel a pressure sensation. Because of this you might assume that that sensation must come from the nerve inside the tooth. Well, in reality, that sensation comes from the nerves found in the ligament that binds the tooth to the jawbone, not from inside the tooth itself. This implies then, from a standpoint of the normal functions we perform with our teeth, that the presence of a live nerve inside a tooth is somewhat academic. If a tooth’s nerve tissue is present and healthy, wonderful. But if a tooth has had its nerve tissue removed as a part of root canal treatment then that’s fine too. You will never miss it. A root canal is usually done by an endodontist or a general dentist. The root canal usually takes one to two visits. First, you have dental X-rays to check the extent of damage. You
also receive a local anesthetic to control pain. A rubber-like sheet called a dental dam is put in your mouth to keep the tooth clean, protected and free of saliva. Decay is removed, and an opening is made through the crown of the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber. Using small dental instruments, the infected or diseased pulp is removed. After the diseased pulp is removed, the pulp chamber and root canals are flushed and cleaned. The root canals may be reshaped and enlarged to allow better access for filling later. Before permanently filling the root canals, they should be clean of all infection and dried. Medication is sometimes put into the pulp chamber and root canal to clear any infection. The tooth may be left open to drain for several days. If infection has spread beyond the tooth, you may need a prescription for antibiotics. If the root canal requires multiple visits, a temporary filling is placed in the crown to protect the tooth and keep out debris and saliva. Avoid biting or chewing on the tooth until it’s been treated and restored. After cleaning and drying,
it’s time to fill the interior of the tooth — the empty pulp chamber and root canals. You may not need additional anesthetic for this step. If you had a temporary filling placed, that will be removed to allow access to the inside of the tooth. A sealer paste and rubber compound is used to fill the tooth, followed by an adhesive filling to make sure the root canals are protected from saliva. The final stage of the root canal is restoring your tooth. Because the tooth typically has a large filling or is weakened from extensive decay, it needs to be protected from future damage and returned to normal function. This is usually done by placing a crown — a realistic-looking artificial tooth. A crown is made of gold, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. It can be tinted to match the exact color of your other teeth. Sometimes, a metal post must first be inserted in the tooth for structural support and to keep the crown in place. We usually do the root canals in one visit. Call our clinic to check the health of your teeth 305-466-2334

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ When it comes to naming children, there is scant ``middle’’ ground. From Rose to Rihanna, Andrew to Atticus, parents often go one of two ways with middle names: plain and simple or what might generously be called ``creative.’’ ``The middle name now is doing a lot of the heavy lifting,’’ said Laura Wattenberg, Boston-based author of ``The Baby Name Wizard,’’ and its fun-to-browse website, www. babynamewizard.com. ``It’s sort of your secret identity _ it’s a part of you (that) you don’t necessarily want to show to the rest of the world.’’ Judging by online blogs, folks are putting a lot more effort into finding that perfect name their children will probably hate by the time they’re 10. ``I think that people are moving past the idea that middle names are just sort of connective tissue between the first name and the last name,’’ said Pamela Redmond Satran, co-creator of www. nameberry.com, online mecca for the moniker-obsessed, and coauthor of several books on the subject. ``Middle names are actually a place where people feel they can be more adventurous than with the first name.’’ For better or worse, some middle names are subject to scrutiny (Barack Hussein Obama), some are nonexistent (Adolph Hitler, Harry S. Truman -- the initial doesn’t stand for anything). Some people (James Paul McCartney, Nelle Harper Lee) use it in place of a first name. Yet others have many in the middle (Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland). Often, the middle name is chosen as a tribute. It’s a chance to honor an old friend or perhaps just suck up to rich old Aunt Martha. And sometimes, an interesting middle name is just a happy accident. If Pittsburgh’s Dowd sisters like theirs, they can thank an officious German civil servant named Frau Prass. City Councilman Patrick Dowd and his wife, Leslie Hammond, didn’t plan this. They were living in Berlin in 1997 on a German Academic
Name Game? Best way to find a middle name Exchange Service (DAAD) grant when the first of their four girls was born. A woman at the local bureau of vital statistics would not accept their choice of Mackenzie as a proper girl’s first name. ``She said, `There’s an approved list,’ and that wasn’t on it,’’ Dowd said. A quick stateside phone call to Dowd’s grandmother convinced them to name the baby in GreatGrandma Mary’s honor, thus, ``Mary Mackenzie Hammond Dowd.’’ But she goes by Mackenzie. The parents liked the idea so much, they used a similar pattern of girl name/androgynous name for the other three -- Emily Quinn, Elizabeth Evan and Madyln Sloane. ``Although sometimes we call Evan `Crazy Betty,’ just because she’s funny,’’ their father said. His ``MN’’ incidentally, is his mother’s maiden name: Shilling. The family’s sons have conventional names. One of the biggest minefields involves use of a family surname, a tradition favored by, among others, the old-school upper classes and Southerners. Satran and her husband chose Leopold as a middle name for their older son, Joe, after a great-grandfather. ``It has a lot of symbolic value, but it might have been a hard (first) name for a modern little boy to live with,’’ she said. Her younger son, Owen, has Redmond as his MN. Mt. Lebanon’s Bridgit Wolf and her ex-husband, Bob Mason, chose for their firstborn Andrew, but passed
along Divvens as a middle name: ``It was my maternal grandparents’ name,’’ she said. This fact came to light before a national audience in early December when Andrew Mason, CEO and co-founder of Groupon, was asked a business question on NBC’s ``Today Show.’’ He responded with a childhood anecdote: ``I was embarrassed of this middle name (Divvens). Josh Wilson made fun of me on the baseball field. I started crying and ran after him.’’ After he finished, program host Matt Lauer laughed and said, ``This is answering my question, how?’’ ``Well, we knew it was an issue then, he came home all mad at us,’’ Wolf said. ``And we never heard anything more about it.’’ Until the ``Today Show,’’ of course. In the case of horror novelist Joe Hill, using a middle name as nom de plume made sense. He’s the son of Stephen King, and his middle name is Hillstrom. He shortened it to use as a surname to maintain his literary identity. At a recent signing of his ``Locke & Key’’ graphic novels at a comic book shop in West Mifflin, Hill was approached by a curious fan who wanted to know which writer’s name was ``real.’’ ``King is his real name and Hill is my real name,’’ he said, smiling. ``It just happens to be my middle name.’’ Those of a certain age can smile while remembering the 1962 ``What’s in a Middle Name?’’ episode of ``The Dick Van Dyke Show.’’ Little Ritchie wants to know
why his MN is Rosebud. It’s a funny exercise in trying to make everyone happy. ROSEBUD is an acronym for the names of his many older relatives: Robert Oscar Sam Edward Benjamin Ulysses David. Wattenberg, who is a statistician by nature, noted there are hundreds of boys out there with the middle name Anakin, as in Darth Vader, and ``at this point, `Messiah’ is in the trendy group as well.’’ Well, why not? ``By this time,’’ she added, ``I am hardly shocked by anything.’’ She noted that ``mash-up’’ names have grown in popularity, especially when they’re introduced through pop culture. The vampire baby of ``Twilight’’ series stars Bella and Edward is named ``Renesmee,’’ after the grandmothers, and ``Carlie,’’ after the grandfathers. Did a flock of Renesmees show up on birth certificates after the popular book was published in 2008? Do we even need to ask? ``Sometimes you have a name that sort of captures the zeitgeist,’’ Wattenberg said. It’s one thing for movie stars and musicians to choose unorthodox names. (Jason Lee’s son is Pilot Inspektor and Bob Geldorf’s daughters are Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches Honeyblossom, Little Pixie, and, after the death of ex-wife Paula Yates, he adopted the girls’ half-sister, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily.) But even among the general population, there are some lulus: ``One really popular middle name for boys right now is Danger, as in `Danger is my middle name,’’’ Wattenberg said. ``Some parents really do want to use something really outrageous and creative.’’ ``People are always writing, `How many middle names is the limit?’’’ Wattenberg said. With luck, there are few who would emulate Rodgers and Hammerstein, whose Prince in ``Cinderella’’ is famously named Christopher Rupert, Windmehr Lademehr, Carl Alexander, Francois Reginal, Lansalot Herman, Gregory James. Perhaps ``The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’’-inspired Zaphod Beeblebrox (popular in the United Kingdom) isn’t so bad, after all.

Your Weekly Horoscope (02/20 -02/26) - By Minerva
ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 You can’t make your influence felt here. As hard as it is to detach, getting involved will only bring you down. Just this once, do what you can to take care of yourself and let others hash things out for themselves.
TAURUS: APRIL 21 - MAY 20 You couldn’t have foreseen this. Being blindsided by events or people has upset so many things. If you’re furious I can see why, but don’t let it get to you. Everything’s a lesson. Learn what you can from this.
wonder how long this will last; that all depends on your ability to stay clear about whether or not others are as committed to this situation as you are.
LEO: JULY 21 - AUGUST 20 There’s a gap between what you want for yourself and what you’re able to do about it. Too much emphasis on work holds you in place. Something needs to change. More of the same will prevent you from ever living your truth.
GEMINI: MAY 21 - JUNE 20 You think this is the right approach. Before you take it, review your motives. If you’re only here for yourself, nothing will work. If you make sure that everyone involved is fairly treated you will succeed.
VIRGO: AUGUST 21 SEPTEMBER 20 You’re well aware of what’s going on. Straddling the fence, you see that you need do what’s expedient until something comes along to show you that your next move will include more of what you want in the equation.
CANCER: JUNE 21 - JULY 20 Everything is good. Waiting for the other shoe to drop, you
LIBRA: SEPTEMBER 21 OCTOBER 20 If things seem to be going
to hell in a bucket, you aren’t alone. Whatever you do, don’t let it bring you down. Whenever life appears to be at its worst, a good sense of humor makes it easier to turn things around. SCORPIO: OCOBER 21 NOVEMBER 20 If you could bury the hatchet you’d be much better off. You can’t win if you keep hanging on to this. In this type of situation taking the high road becomes a matter of being willing to let go of the need to be right. SAGITTARIUS: NOVEMBER 21 DECEMBER 20 Dealing with people who insist that you bow to their will has you up against a wall. You will gain nothing by going along with their plans. Don’t diminish yourself by saying yes to things that compromise your integrity. CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 21 JANUARY 20
Whoever hurt you didn’t mean to; don’t nurse this wound any longer than you have to. Give others the benefit of the doubt and expect an apology as soon as they get in touch with the fact that they totally screwed up. AQUARIUS: JANUARY 21 FEBRUARY 20 This would be easier if you weren’t so busy seeing what you want to see. Taking off your blinders will show you that whoever you’ve put your faith in doesn’t deserve it. Think twice before you give yourself away.
