Hardwicke’s early films, “Thirteen’’ and “Lords of Dogtown,’’ felt stripped-down and immediate, and they vividly conveyed the restlessness of youth. “Red Riding Hood’’ sort of hints at that in the character of Valerie (Amanda Seyfried), who’d rather be with the bad boy she loves than the

a dark, dangerous forest, where everyone’s more on edge than usual following the latest werewolf attack. Hardwicke depicts the place in haunted fashion, with scenery and lighting that often have a misty, ethereal, almost otherworldly glow. But then the set design feels super chintzy, like something you’d see in a theme park. The Big Bad Wolf itself, meanwhile, is rendered with CGI work that looks so distractingly fake and disconnected from the rest of the film, it’s hard to take this creature seriously. The menfolk think they’ve hunted down the wolf and killed it. Gary Oldman, who’s perfectly slimy as a clergyman with questionable ethics, warns them that they’re wrong, and that they shouldn’t let their guards down just yet. But, of course, they do _ with a wild, drunken party, no less _ which makes them all even more vulnerable when the wolf strikes again. Oldman, as Father Solomon, suggests they shouldn’t waste their time looking for the wolf outside the village, because he (or she!) lurks among them, hidden in human form. Hence, “Red Riding Hood’’ becomes a whodunit, with plenty of red herrings. Could it be Peter or Henry? Valerie’s mother (Virginia Madsen as a social climber with a secret) or grandmother (Julie Christie as a bohemian outsider)? Maybe it’s Valerie’s dad (Billy Burke, who just happens to play Kristen Stewart’s dad in the “Twilight’’ movies). The wolf does have a soft spot for Valerie _ and who could blame it? She’s gorgeous, with the contrast of her porcelain skin, big blue eyes and that striking red hood against the snowy backdrop. But with everyone feeling so paranoid and mistrustful, Valerie’s spiritual connection with the wolf makes her a suspect. This is the perfect time for the guys in this love triangle to step up and prove themselves _ and they’d probably be shirtless more often if the film didn’t take place in winter. Speaking of body parts, “Red Riding Hood’’ does trot out the classic what-big-eyes-youhave routine. It’s a pretty amusing moment, and it makes you wish the rest of the film had that same sort of knowing sense of humor. “Red Riding Hood,’’ a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 for violence and creature

Aliens make ugly in `Battle: Los Angeles’ By JAKE COYLE

AP Entertainment Writer Disaster films will really get interesting when they start running out of iconic skylines to destroy. How about “Battle: Wichita’’ or “Deep Impact: Albany’’? “Battle: Los Angeles’’ doesn’t rely as much

We get brief visions of their soon-to-change lives, all in various stages of heterosexual development: one is a virgin, another engaged, another with a pregnant wife. It’s the first hint that director Jonathan Liebesman (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning’’) and screenwriter Chris Bertolini are most interested in a conventional war film. All the hallmarks are here, with handheld cameras and rousing, “ooh-rah’’ solidarity _ just with the notable exception of enemy species. Once the aliens have landed, the unit is sent into Santa Monica with the seemingly inconsequential task of rescuing a handful of civilians (Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena)

trapped at a police station. They’re told to “kill anything that’s not human,’’ which can be a challenging distinction even on Santa Monica’s best days. Masked in a haze or jumping from rooftops, the aliens aren’t seen straight on for some time. When we eventually do get a good look at them, they aren’t anything special. Above all else, the audience demands unique extra-terrestrials in such a movie: a radical set of fangs, at least, or some new, ravishing variation of antennae. As the marines make their way through the wreckage and various skirmishes with the aliens, great care is taken to portray military hierarchy. In command is Lieutenant William Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez), whom Nantz guides as a subordinate advisor. There’s great trepidation among the platoon for Nantz, who’s rumored to have led several of his men into death. But Nantz keeps the group focused and grounded, much as the talented Eckhart (“The Dark Knight,’’ “Thank You For Smoking’’) does for the film. With a square jaw and reluctant eyes, Eckhart fits the part well, and does a great deal to keep ”Battle: Los Angeles’’ engaging. He and Liebesman manage to pull off the ultra-seriousness for much of the film, before a laughable speech of teary-eyed inspiration finally does them in. In times of great terrorist concerns, there’s obvious comfort in depicting a war with such a clear-cut enemy: If we can’t straighten out Afghanistan, at least we can kick some alien behind. The spectacle of disaster is oddly lacking throughout. At one point, our jaws are supposed to drop for an obliterated freeway onramp. There’s also little sense of Los Angeles: No terrified actors running from set, no jokes that a sophisticated subway system would have really come in handy with aliens buzzing overhead. Instead, the movie stays surprisingly close to the ground, bogged down in block-by-block combat. Los Angeles traffic triumphs again. (In reality, 90 percent of the film was shot in low-tax Louisiana.) “Battle: Los Angeles,’’ a Columbia Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction, and for language. Running time: 116 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

as its genre brethren on the gleeful horror of seeing familiar landmarks burn. (We don’t even get a shot of the “Hollywood’’ sign in flames.) Instead, this West Coast version of alien invasion distinguishes itself as an urban warfare film and a patriotic advert for the Marines. Like so many of these films, “Battle: Los Angeles’’ opens on urgent news reports announcing that “the world is at war.’’ CNN snippets are laced throughout the movie, and it’s easy to see their function in relaying exposition. But it’s rather terrifying to think that even extra-terrestrials can’t stop the 24/7 stream of cable news. The date is Aug. 12, 2011. Alien ships, first

appearing like a cluster of meteors, “breach’’ the Earth and quickly make their violent intentions clear, shooting gun-like weapons and discharging flying mechanical droids. One of the 12 ships lands just off the shore of L.A.’s laid-back Santa Monica. The film flashes back 24 hours to introduce the handful of Marines whom we will follow into battle. Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) is retiring after a particularly rough mission only vaguely referred to. Though it’s his last day, the weary veteran is dispatched to assist a platoon of young Marines (Ne-Yo, Cory Hardrict among them) expecting to head to Afghanistan.

Carlos Alvarez message to Miami-Dade County residents

It has been an honor and privilege to serve this community for the past 35 years. The voters have spoken and a time of healing and reconciliation must now begin. No matter which side of the recall issue, one thing is certain: we all care very deeply about this community. A professional

management team remains in place in Miami-Dade County government and I know they will work hard to ensure the smoothest transition possible in the coming days. I wish the next Mayor of Miami-Dade County much success. Public service is an honorable profession and I want to thank County employees for the good work they do day in and day out. I want to thank all of the volunteers and supporters who have worked so hard on my behalf and ask that they move beyond the recall election and continue to work for the betterment of our community in new and different ways. I wish nothing but the best for Miami-Dade County – a place I love and will continue to call home.

By Luis Espinoza, DERM Baynanza was created in 1982 in an effort by Miami-Dade County to save Biscayne Bay. To date, it’s the largest event of its kind in South Florida. The program was created when local community leaders and DERM staff joined forces to raise awareness about the dire conditions of one of our most important natural resources, Biscayne Bay. At the time, the Bay was being threatened by the direct impact of pollution from sewage runoff, marine debris, and other contaminants. The main idea for the creation of Baynanza was to get the community involved in the efforts to bring Biscayne Bay back to life. Twenty-nine years later, the Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day, has become synonymous with Baynanza. On this day, thousands of volunteers go out to dozens of locations throughout Miami-Dade County to pick up tons of trash from the shorelines and nearby islands of the Bay. But Baynanza is more than just a 1-day event. This internationally known program is comprised of more than 35 great environmental events organized by several local agencies and sponsors. Baynanza runs from March to April every year, giving the community an array of educational events from which to choose. This year, MiamiDade County will celebrate the 29th anniversary of Baynanza and the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day, which will

Miami-Dade county’s unemployment rate drops for the first time since the start of the recession According to data being released today by the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), the unemployment rate in Miami-Dade County dropped for the first time since the start of the recession. While the decline was small, from 13.4% to 13.3%, this was the first time since 2007 that the County has experienced a significant drop in the number of unemployed.

myamimagazine.com

Miami-Dade employment grew by nearly 4,000 from December to January while the labor force grew by just over 3,000. One-thousand nonfarm payroll jobs were added from December to January to reach 981,700 jobs in MiamiDade. Private sector industries added 600 jobs in January and 6,100 jobs over the past 12 months. The largest gains over the past year have been in leisure and hospitality (+3,500 jobs), education and health services (+2,500 jobs), retail trade (+1,300 jobs) and wholesale trade (+1,200 jobs). Construction jobs held steady in January at 30,900, but remain 1,800 positions lower (-5.6%) than last January. Manufacturing employment edged higher in January (+200), but is lower than last January by 1,100 jobs (-3.1%). Employment in

information and financial services continued their decline in January, with each industry losing approximately 700 jobs over the past 12 months. After four consecutive months of year-overyear declines, initial unemployment claims rose by nearly 14,000 claims in January, a 36% increase over December and a 10% increase over January 2010. Nationally, on a year-over-year basis, unemployment rates decreased among whites (8.7% to 8%), blacks (16.4% to 15.7%), Hispanics (12.5% to 11.9%) and men (10.8% to 9.5%), but remain largely unchanged for teenagers and women. USF students heading back to US from Japan (AP) _ Six University of South Florida students in central Japan when the devastating earthquake and tsunami struck will be returning to the U.S. The students were participating in a study abroad education program in Hirakata. USF officials announced Thursday that the students would be returning as a precaution after the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning. Other U.S. universities are also evacuating students. Travel arrangements for the USF students are currently being made. In updates published on the university’s website, one of the students said the region they were staying in had been minimally affected and

that tremors were ``barely noticeable.’’ A USF official said the university is working to allow the students to continue Japanese language studies once they return.

Florida grew to 18.8 million residents

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Florida grew to 18.8 million residents in the past decade. Numbers released Thursday by the U.S. Census show that Florida grew by 2.8 million residents from 2000 to 2010. That is an increase of more than 17.5 percent. The counties with the biggest growth in the past decade were Flagler and Sumter counties in north and central Florida. Monroe County, home to the Florida Keys, and Pinellas County, home to St. Petersburg, were the only Florida counties to show population declines.

Final vote set on Fla. teacher merit pay, tenure

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Republican-sponsored legislation setting up a merit pay plan for teachers and ending

tenure for new hires is up for a final vote in the GOPcontrolled Florida House. If passed as expected Wednesday, the bill (SB 736) will go to Gov. Rick Scott, who has made it one of his top priorities. Former Gov. Charlie Crist, then a Republican who later became an independent, vetoed a similar bill 11 months ago after widespread protests. The new version is designed to mirror Florida’s plan for a $700 million federal Race to the Top education grant that includes a move to merit pay. Opponents, though, say it goes beyond that blue print by chipping away at teachers’ due process and collective bargaining rights.

Blood Drinking Killing - US man who drank victim’s blood gets 20 years

BARTOW, Florida (AP) A central Florida man accused of killing his roommate and drinking the man’s blood has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. As part of a deal with prosecutors, 43-year-old Mauricio Lopez pleaded no contest Wednesday to second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and robbery with a deadly weapon. Authorities say Lopez fatally stabbed 32-yearold Macario Cruz in August 2010. Authorities say Lopez drank a cup of Cruz’s blood as part of a ritual. Prosecutors say they agreed to the deal because a major witness _ the victim’s brother _ was in Mexico and unavailable to testify.

Let’s face it, no woman wants to feel they are just one more among the rest. Each one of us was born to be a princess and unique in our own particular way. We love the attention and to stand out in the crowd. This is exactly what happens when you wear one of our designs! As a woman myself, this was the reason and inspiration for such an amazing beachwear and accessories collection”

YENI GONZALEZ I was born in Cardenas, Cuba. This is the north coast and very close to Varadero Beach, my favorite place to spend my weekends together with the family because it is a beautiful beach of very thin white sand. As long as I can remember, the beach has always been my favorite place to be and feel as if nothing in the world could ever go wrong. The breeze of pure air always gave me an amazing and inexplicable feeling of relief and happiness. While living in Cuba, I had very little options and choices but with the help of my parents and grandparents I would dress up every time I went to the beach with the best bikini and accessories from a very early age. My grandma was a seamstress and I always watched her closely when she was making a dress for me. With all the extras pieces that fell on the floor from cutting the fabrics, I collected them and made bathing suits for my dolls and I would then take them with me to the beach so we would have matching pieces! By the age of 9, my family and I were finally able to escape Cuba after many attempts with the hopes and dreams of having a chance on the land of opportunities and freedom. After a very rough and complicated journey through a storm, with the help of God, we were rescued by the U.S Coast Guard. Suddenly, a feeling of gratitude came over me and the sensation of “nothing is impossible” became part of me. Once here in the United States my parents worked very hard, they even had two jobs each at times so they could give me and my brother the best within their possibilities; something that I could never thank them enough for. When I was 15, I designed my own dress and bathing suit which I was going to use for a photo shoot, I knew exactly the look I was searching for, and I had them made for me at the time. I was a ballerina for several years, and I studied drama and modeling as well. Art is what I’ve always had a passion for. I continued studying and focusing in what I

to do something about it, for myself and to help every other woman out there that felt the same way I was feeling at that moment. I remember thinking “I can’t believe this is Miami, a city with such beautiful beaches, sunny skies and such an active

The History of

Hollywood

The City of Hollywood is a mature and built-out community, where rapid population growth in the 1950s and 1960s has given way to a population that is stable in size but undergoing significant changes in its composition. The October 1997 issue of Money Magazine noted that Hollywood’s demographics best represent what the United States will look like in the year 2022. Hollywood’s racial diversity, cultural variety, and blend of the old and young are where the country is headed. Twenty-seven percent of Hollywood’s residents are 55 or older; thirteen percent are 45 to 54; and thirty-one percent are 25 to 44. Hispanics make up seventeen percent; African Americans thirteen percent; Whites sixty-eight percent; and Asian Americans two percent of the population. The magazine forecasts that this will be the composition of the United States in the year 2022, with the exception that Hispanics will be fourteen percent and Asian Americans five percent. Hollywood, the “City of the Future,” is proud of its cultural and racial diversity.

From its formal incorporation by adoption of a municipal charter on November 28, 1925, the City of Hollywood has transformed itself. Beginning as an undeveloped tract of pine forests, palmetto plants, and tangled undergrowth interspersed with tomato farms and low lying marshland, it has become the second-most populated city in Broward County and the ninth largest city in the State of Florida. Founded by the planning visionary Joseph Wesley Young, a Washington state native and former resident of California and Indiana, the original one square mile of farmland has grown to over 28.87 square miles with

a gross taxable value of real and personal property in 1998 of over $5,408,266,000. Joseph Young first arrived in South Florida in January 1920 to survey several parcels of land that would be suitable for the site of his “Dream City in Florida.” His initial vision included a wide boulevard extending from the ocean westward to the edge of the Everglades with man-made lakes paralleling each side of the roadway. One end of each lake would empty into the Intracoastal Waterway and the other would serve as a twin turning basin for private yachts. Also included in Young’s vision was the sectioning of Hollywood into districts, a precursor of present day zoning regulations, with a centrally located business district, large park spaces, a golf course, schools, and churches. Hollywood, in Joseph Young’s vision, “will be a city for everyone from the opulent at the top of the industrial and social ladder to the most humble of working people.” Unique in Young’s city plan was the incorporation of three large circles of land located along his planned principal boulevard. These circles

became the sites of a ten-acre park (originally named Harding Circle and later renamed Young Circle), the City Hall complex (originally named City Hall Circle and later renamed Watson Circle), and a military academy (Academy Circle.) Academy Circle, now Presidential Circle, is the current site of a focal commercial structure. Having formerly lived in California, Young chose as the name of his “Dream City” the name of the Southern California town that had once been so attractive to him. With the formation of the Hollywood Land and Water Company, composed of twentysix departments covering every aspect of city-building, Joseph Young began earnestly bringing to reality his vision of Hollywood. In February 1921 Young purchased at approximately $175 per acre the first parcel of land that would evolve into present-day Hollywood. Young was successful in attracting numerous potential Hollywood residents to visit and eventually purchase property in Hollywood. By 1925, the Florida real estate market had reached all-time highs with speculators constantly bidding up Hollywood real estate in a frenzy

A coastal city of over 130,000 residents located in Broward County, Hollywood is nestled between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport abuts the city, while Port Everglades, the second busiest cruise port in the world, is partially within its municipal boundaries. Interstate 95, the Florida Turnpike, TriCounty Commuter Rail, and two major railroads cut through the city in a north-south direction.

Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami are less than twenty-five miles away, providing further opportunities for Hollywood residents and companies to have access to the global marketplace. The region is served by a substantial post-secondary educational infrastructure, including Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Miami, a number of smaller private universities and colleges, and a community college system.

of buying. Construction continued at a rapid pace with the building of the Hollywood Boulevard Bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway at the cost of $110,000. By January 1926, Hollywood numbered approximately 2,420 dwellings with approximately 18,000 people, thirty-six apartment buildings, 252 business buildings and nine hotels either completed or under construction. The city had grown to include 18,000 acres, six-anda-half miles of oceanfront and an assessed value of $20,000,000. With this phenomenal growth, residents from the neighboring communities of Hallandale to the south and Dania to the north petitioned the legislature and the Hollywood City Commission to permit their annexation into Hollywood. During this period, construction along Hollywood Beach was rapidly transforming the coastline. Construction was underway on the Hollywood Broadwalk, a unique cement promenade, thirty feet wide, stretching along the shoreline for a distance of one-and-a-half miles and patterned after Atlantic City’s famed boardwalk. Hollywood Beach also boasted Florida’s largest and best appointed bathing pavilion, the Hollywood Beach Casino located on the Broadwalk, built at a cost of $250,000 and

complete with 824 dressing rooms, eighty shower baths, a shopping arcade and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The “Atlantic City of the South” added more allure with the opening in February 1926 of the Hollywood Beach Hotel, which was situated on an 800-foot expanse of oceanfront property at the eastern end of Hollywood Boulevard. The Hollywood Beach Hotel would rise seven stories in height, include 500 rooms with private baths, contain the world’s largest solarium, and boast a private wire connection direct to the New York Stock Exchange for use by hotel guests. It was built at a cost of more than $3,000,000. The hotel quickly became the winter home of many northern industrialists, visiting celebrities, and the site of several of Hollywood’s fanciest social affairs. On September 18, 1926, disaster struck Joseph Young’s “Dream City.” A vicious hurricane slammed into the South Florida Atlantic coast with Hollywood among its targets. The city was devastated by the hurricane’s high winds and surging floodwaters. It claimed thirty-seven lives, uprooted trees, ripped electrical wires down, tore roofs off buildings, and flattened signboards and houses alike. Millions of dollars in property losses were incurred and the seemingly

unlimited growth of Hollywood stopped overnight without warning. Again, Joseph Young took up the challenge and led in the rebuilding of Hollywood as head of the Hollywood Relief Committee. During this time of despair, the Hollywood Municipal Band would assemble on Hollywood Boulevard to play rousing marches and other inspirational music as the rebuilding was undertaken. However, the huge task of rebuilding and the financial losses inflicted by the hurricane were enormous and caused thousands of Hollywood’s residents to abandon their new found homes and return to northern cities. The population of Hollywood declined precipitously from 18,000 to approximately 2,500 and property values plummeted as former residents sold properties for whatever the real estate market would yield. As a result of the turmoil, the residents of the communities of Hallandale and Dania seceded from Hollywood, refusing to pay municipal taxes to what was now, in essence, a bankrupt municipality. During this period, Hollywood had also been expanding its residential stock of homes by building new residences in the western reaches of Hollywood in an area that would become the

Hollywood Hills section. Young had contracted with the Highway Construction Company of Ohio and its founder, Samuel Horvitz, to begin construction in this area. By February 1927, in the aftermath of the hurricane and the ensuing collapse of the real estate market, construction had ceased as Young found himself unable to meet financial commitments to Horvitz and other lenders. Undeterred, Joseph Young’s vision of his “Dream City” included one last inspiration. While grounded in a speedboat on a mud flat in shallow Lake Mabel one afternoon, Young developed his visionary concept while awaiting rescue from his predicament. His idea was to dredge a deep-water seaport from the shallow lake north of Hollywood to the Atlantic Ocean, so that ships from around the world could dock and disembark eager visitors and tourists to Hollywood. In February 1928, Young’s vision became a reality. From that initial predicament, the present day Port Everglades grew from a shallow lake into one of the busiest seaports in Florida. Despite his best efforts to promote the new seaport and the City of Hollywood, Young’s precarious financial situation caused him to ultimately lose control of his vast Hollywood holdings to a sheriff’s

auction on the steps of a Fort Lauderdale courthouse in 1930. Young continued to live in his beloved city until April 1934, when he collapsed in his Hollywood Boulevard home and died of heart failure at the age of 51.

Continuing its growth into the decade of the 1950s, a $1,000,000 bond referendum providing funds for the construction of Hollywood Memorial Hospital was passed in 1951 after an initial rejection by the city’s electorate. The hospital was opened in February 1953,

providing 100 hospital beds and a major medical facility for southern Broward County. In 1952, Joseph Watson became Hollywood’s twenty-second city manager since the city’s incorporation in 1925. During the next eighteen years, Hollywood would know only one city manager. In 1954, Hollywood Boulevard was extended from State Road 7 westward to U.S. 27 along the eastern edge of the Everglades in Broward County. This triggered the westward expansion of the city. The remainder of the decade saw the continued growth of Hollywood as Hollywood, Inc., moved ahead with the development of the Hollywood Hills section and set aside a tract of land for the future Hollywood Mall. In 1958, Hollywood

27

celebrated the opening of the Diplomat Hotel on Hollywood Beach and for years thereafter, the Diplomat Hotel became the temporary residence of many of America’s celebrities, entertainers, and dignitaries as they visited, performed, and basked in Florida’s warm winter sun. By the beginning of the 1960s, Hollywood had over 12,171 single family homes and 2,422 hotel units in addition to thousands of other housing structures. In 1964, the county’s tallest cooperative office-apartment building at the time, the eighteen-story Home Federal Tower, was constructed in downtown Hollywood. A spurt of growth during this decade resulted

myamimagazine.com

In the wake of Young’s financial collapse and untimely death, two of his principal creditors formed new corporations in an attempt to renew the growth of Hollywood. Led by Hollywood, Inc., a slow but perceptible growth was re-ignited in Hollywood in the decade of the 1930s. Early in the 30s, construction began on Federal Highway (U.S. 1), the main north-south route to the industrial northeast, from Dania to Hollywood. Construction also began on the Hollywood Hills Inn on the site of the westernmost circle. In 1932, the inn was converted into the Riverside Military Academy and the circle renamed Academy Circle. By 1934, the city added to its recreational facilities with the opening of the Orangebrook Golf and Country Club and Dowdy Field, a local baseball park that later became the spring training home of the Baltimore Orioles for a short while. In 1935, the city added a water softener system to its municipal water plant and the original Fiesta Tropicale celebration was

inaugurated. By the end of the decade, Hollywood’s population had risen from 2,689 in 1930 to 4,500 in 1935 and to 6,239 in 1940. In the 1940s World War II came to Hollywood. The military academy site was taken over and converted into the United States Naval Air Gunners’ School; the Hollywood Beach Hotel became the United States Naval Indoctrination and Training School; and the Hollywood Golf and Country Club became an entertainment and recreation center for U.S. servicemen. With the end of the war in 1945, new management was installed at the Hollywood Beach Hotel; the hotel repainted and refurbished and building permits were secured to build the largest swimming pool and cabana club in the United States. The city’s population continued to grow, reaching over 7,500 in 1945 and almost doubling to 14,351 by 1950. Even two hurricanes in the fall of 1947 failed to deter the city’s renewed growth.

in an increase of the housing stock to 35,045 single-family residences with a similar increase in other accommodations. In the middle part of this decade, Hollywood’s municipal boundaries continued to expand from its eastern border on the Atlantic Ocean to new areas of unincorporated Broward County to the west, north, and south. From a population of 22,978 in 1955, Hollywood grew to 35,237 in 1960, almost doubling to 67,500 in 1965, expanding to 106,873 by 1970, and finally reaching over 121,400 by 1975. During this period of explosive growth, Hollywood instituted a growth management program which revised land use controls in an effort to manage and improve the quality and quantity of development so that needed public improvements and services could be coordinated with the barely controllable population growth. Unique to Hollywood is the location of the Seminole Indian Reservation, a politically independent entity, within the corporate limits of the city. In 1971, Hollywood was the site of the “Pageant of the Unconquered Seminoles” which drew the attendance of Native Americans from across the United States. Celebrating the city’s Fiftieth Anniversary in 1975, Hollywood

adopted the nickname the “Diamond of the Gold Coast.” In its anniversary year, Joseph Young’s “Dream City” had grown to include over 27,500 single-family residences, 34,581 apartments and other types of residential structures and a population exceeding 125,400 people. In recent years, Hollywood has continued to add luster to its reputation as the Diamond of the Gold Coast with the opening of the Anne Kolb Nature Center located in Hollywood’s West Lake Tract. The center boasts over 1,500 acres of mangrove preserves and is the site of a protected bird rookery and sanctuary as well as a fish nursery ground. On Hollywood’s North Beach, a sea turtle hatchery and preserve has been developed. The historic downtown arts district along Harrison Street and the Hollywood Art & Culture Center have become centers of activity in the cultural arts and entertainment communities of South Florida. Prior to 2000, the four members of the City Commission and the Mayor were elected in citywide elections with the Mayor serving a twoyear term and the Commissioners a four-year term. In November 1998, however, a straw ballot indicated the residents’ willingness

to consider expanding the Commission to six members, each elected by a distinct district rather than citywide. In March 1999, after a heated debate, the electorate narrowly approved a charter revision to divide the city into six districts; each represented by its own commissioner and expanded the term of the Mayor from two years to four years. The primary and general elections in February and March 2000 were the first held under the new system. Two incumbent Commissioners were reelected in their new districts, four new Commissioners were voted into office, and the Mayor was reelected to a four-year term. The Mayor, the presiding officer at City Commission meetings, continues to be elected by the city at large. What is next for Hollywood? While buildings and roads and infrastructure are important, the real future of Hollywood lies with its new generations that will mature to lead the City to even greater heights barely imaginable by Joseph Young in 1925. As important as our history might be, the past is merely prologue to the future. For More information about the City of Hollywood, go to

Hollywood’s Street Name Facts

Anton C. “Tony” Mickelson had just finished two hitches in the Navy (1915-20), when he returned to Indianapolis in the Spring of 1920. He got a job with the Young Company there (the Homeseekers Realty Co.), and came to Florida in 1920 as a salesman for Joseph Young’s Miami developments, then became a surveyor for the company in Hollywood. In 1924, sales were going so well that Joseph Young decided to open up the South Hollywood Addition. The maps were needed immediately so the salesmen could have them the next morning. Head draftsman Basil Konnanov [or Kononoff], assistant to Chief Engineer Frank Dickey, asked Mickelson to give him some names for the new neighborhood. So he chose the officers and commanders he had served under while in the Navy, also one general who was very famous. After the 1925 incorporation of the City of Hollywood, in June 1926 the City Commission voted to retain the naming of streets after presidents, admirals, and generals, while renumbering the north-south avenues starting at the beach rather than the railroad tracks.

When the streets of Hollywood were being laid out in the early 1920s, it may have been the Engineering Department staff of the Young Companies here or in Indianapolis who made the original decisions to name east-west streets after U.S. presidents, and who also named the east-west streets north of the presidents for generals and others. Unfortunately, there is no documentation for it. It is the streets south of Washington that there is a story for. Madison Street President James Madison (1751-1836), served 1809-1817 (Democratic-Republican). Monroe Street President James Monroe (1758-1831), served 1817-1825 (Democratic-Republican). Jackson Street President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), served 1829-1837 (Democrat). Jackson was also the first pre-territorial governor of Florida in 1821. Moffett Street Admiral William A. Fletcher (18551928) was commander of US naval forces in the Atlantic before the US entered World War I. Mayo Street Admiral Henry T. Mayo (1856-1937) was commander of the Atlantic Fleet during World War I. Lee Street General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was a West Point graduate and army engineer. Over the years, additional street names were added in new neighborhoods and developments, and in areas that were annexed to Hollywood. On old numbered streets in annexed areas of West Hollywood, names were changed to those that continued from the east. There are a number of streets named after early Florida state and territorial governors, important local figures, famous golfers in Emerald Hills, authors in Sheridan Lakes, real estate developers in downtown and western Hollywood, explorers, etc. This list includes streets named after famous people (or at least noted locals). With a few exceptions, it does not include streets named after places, trees, etc. If we have left off your street, we can add it. If you can provide information on an unknown street name, or can verify a questioned name, please let us know. We have provided less information on presidents as it is generally more accessible. More detailed lists, and our research files, are available in the office of the Records and Archives Division. Washington Street President George Washington (1732-1799), served 1789-1797. He

Hummus History & Facts Many cuisine-related sources describe hummus as a very ancient food, or connect it to famous historical figures such as Saladin. And indeed it’s basic ingredients, chickpeas, sesame, lemon, and garlic, have been eaten in the region for millennia. But in fact, there is no specific evidence for this purported ancient history of hummus bi tahini. Though chickpeas were widely eaten in the region, and they were often cooked in stews and other hot dishes, puréed chickpeas eaten cold with tahini do not

appear before the Abbasid period in Egypt and the Levant. The earliest known recipes for something similar to hummus bi tahini date to 13th century Egypt. A cold purée of chickpeas with vinegar and pickled lemons with herbs, spices, and oil, but no tahini or garlic, appears in the Kitāb al-Wusla ilā l-habīb fī wasf al-tayyibāt wa-l-tīb and a purée of chickpeas and tahini called hummus kasa appears in the Kitab Wasf al-Atima al-Mutada: it is based on puréed chickpeas and tahini, and acidulated with vinegar (though not lemon), but it also contains many spices, herbs, and nuts, and no garlic. It is also served by rolling it out and letting it sit overnight, which presumably gives it a very different texture from hummus bi

tahini. The earliest known documentation of hummus itself comes from 18th-century Damascus; and it appears it was unknown elsewhere at that time Hummus is high in: Iron and vitamin C, and also has significant amounts of folate and vitamin B6. The chickpeas make it a good source of protein and dietary fiber; the tahini consists mostly of sesame seeds, which are an excellent source of the amino acid methionine, complementing the proteins in the chickpeas. Hummus is useful in vegetarian and vegan diets and like other combinations of grains and pulses, when eaten with bread it serves as a complete protein.

FDA - US approves first new drug for lupus in 56 years The Food and Drug Administration approved Wednesday the first new drug to treat lupus in over 50 years, a milestone that medical experts say could prompt development of other drugs that are even more effective in treating the debilitating immune system disorder. >> by MATTHEW PERRONE Known as Benlysta, the injectable drug is designed to relieve flareups and pain caused by lupus, a little-understood and potentially fatal ailment in which the body attacks its own tissue and organs. Biotech drugmaker Human Genome Sciences Inc. spent 15 years developing Benlysta and will co-market it with GlaxoSmithKline PLC. The companies estimate there are at least 200,000 lupus patients in the U.S. who could benefit from the drug. But experts stress that Benlysta is not a miracle drug: It only worked in 35 percent of North American patients tested and was not effective for patients

with the deadliest form of the disease. Additionally, it did not show positive results in African-Americans, who are disproportionately affected by lupus. FDA said in its news release it would require the drug developers to conduct another study exclusively on African-Americans. Dr. Betty Diamond, who has studied lupus for 30 years, said Benlysta should provide encouragement to researchers and drug developers. “It will send out the message that it’s possible to conduct a successful clinical trial in lupus and that’s tremendously important to keep the pharmaceutical industry

interested in this disease,’’ said Diamond, a researcher at the Feinstein Institute in New York. Janice Fitzgibbon of McLean, Virginia has been taking Benlysta for two years as part of the drug’s clinical trial program. “It’s given me my life back,’’ she said, after being so crushed by pain that she couldn’t take her dog for a walk or drive her children to school. “It’s a bittersweet thing for me because I have friends with lupus for whom this drug won’t work,’’ said Fitzgibbon, who is 54. ``There’s no one-size-fits-all for lupus and I’m just extremely fortunate that my lupus is mild and is helped by Benlysta.’’

AP Health Writer FDA approved the drug for systemic lupus erythematosus, the most common form of the disease. Ten-year survival for patients diagnosed with the illness is more than 85 percent, according to the National Institutes of Health. Lupus patients have long struggled to draw attention to their disease, which affects women nine times more than men. African-Americans are three times more likely to have the disease. “I don’t think there’s a conspiracy here, but it just hasn’t gotten a lot of funding and it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention from the media,’’ said Dr. Abby Abelson, chair of the Department of Rheumatologic and Immunologic Disease at the

Cleveland Clinic. Lupus causes fibrous tissue and inflammation of internal organs, skin rashes and joint pain. Most of Benlysta’s benefit came from relieving muscle inflammation versus organ problems, as measured on a comprehensive checklist of lupus symptoms. The disease occurs when the body’s protector cells, known as antibodies, stop differentiating between foreign invaders, like bacteria, and healthy cells. The cause of this malfunction is not understood.

Currently most patients treat their disease with a variety of drugs that help ease inflammation, including painkillers, steroids and antimalarial drugs _ which were first approved for lupus in the 1950s. Many patients say the side effects of those treatments are nearly as uncomfortable as the disease itself. Steroids can cause bone fractures, weight gain and infection. Wednesday’s approval completes a remarkable turnaround for Maryland-based Human Genome Sciences which has

been developing Benlysta since 1996 and has no other products on the market. The company originally tested Benlysta, known generically as belimumab, as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. When a mid-stage trial in lupus patients failed to meet researchers’ goals in 2006, many analysts wrote the drug off and downgraded the company’s stock. But when scientists reanalyzed the data they found that the drug helped block the antibodies that cause lupus symptoms in a subset

HEALTH

41

of patients. Analysts estimate the drug could reach annual sales exceeding $3 billion within five years. Human Genome Sciences’ stock has ballooned in the last two years _ from 70 cents to roughly $25 per share _ as the company’s prospects have improved. Trading in its shares was halted pending the release of the FDA news after the market’s close Wednesday. GlaxoSmithKline shares rose $1.36, or 3.5 percent, to $39.94 in extended trading.

Study: Coffee tied to lower stroke risk in women

Women who enjoy a daily dose of coffee may like this perk: It might lower their risk of stroke. Women in a Swedish study who drank at least a cup of coffee every day had a 22 to 25 percent lower risk of stroke, compared to those who drank less coffee or none at all. >> by JAMIE STENGLE Associated Press

determine its risks and benefits. The Swedish researchers led by Susanna Larsson at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said previous studies on coffee consumption and strokes have had conflicting findings. “There hasn’t been a consistent message come out,’’ of coffee studies, said Dr. Cathy Sila, a stroke neurologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.

For the observational study, researchers followed 34,670 Swedish women, ages 49 to 83, for about 10 years. The women were asked how much coffee they drank at the start of the study. The researchers checked hospital records to find out how many of the women later had strokes. There were a total of 1,680 strokes, including 205 in those who drank less than a cup or

none. Researchers adjusted for differences between the groups that affect stroke risk, such as smoking, weight, high blood pressure and diabetes, and still saw a lower stroke risk among coffee drinkers. Larsson said the benefit was seen whether the women drank a cup or several daily. “You don’t need to drink so much. One or two cups a day is enough,’’ she said. Larsson, who in another study found a link between coffee drinking in Finnish men who smoked and decreased stroke risk, said more research needs to be done to figure out why coffee may be cutting stroke risk. It could be reducing inflammation and improving insulin sensitivity, she said, or it could be the antioxidants in coffee. Larsson and others point out that those who want to reduce their chances of a stroke should focus on the proven ways to lower risk: Don’t smoke. Keep blood pressure in check. Maintain a healthy weight.

myamimagazine.com

“Coffee drinkers should rejoice,’’ said Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes, a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. ``Coffee is often made out to be potentially bad for your heart. There really hasn’t been any study that convincingly said coffee is bad.’’ “If you are drinking coffee now, you may be doing some good and you are likely not doing harm,’’ she added. But Hayes and other doctors say the study shouldn’t send noncoffee drinkers running to their local coffee shop. The study doesn’t prove that coffee lowers stroke risk, only that coffee drinkers tend to have a lower stroke risk. “These sorts of epidemiological studies are compelling but they don’t prove cause,’’ said Dr. David S. Seres, director of medical nutrition at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. The findings were published online Thursday in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. Scientists have been studying coffee for years, trying to

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY AP Music Writer Dido talks about becoming a mother, new album Dido does not know the sex of her baby, but she is not going wait

until her due date to find out. ``I’m too curious,’’ the British singer-songwriter said in a recent interview. ``It’s enough of a surprise on the day.’’ Dido is due to have her first child this summer. Its already has been a big year: She was nominated for an Academy Award for best song for co-writing ``If I Rise’’ from the movie ``127 Hours,’’ and is finishing up a new album. ``I’m nearly done,’’ she said last month about her coming album. ``Music will just start coming out as this year goes on.’’ Dido, perhaps best known stateside for the song ``Thank You,’’ which was sampled by Eminem for ``Stan,’’ said her new record brings her back to her electronic roots. She is once again working with her brother, Rollo Armstrong, as well as other producers. ``It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable record,’’ she said. ``It’s a real mix, and in a funny sort of way, it’s a mix of everything, some sort of big electronic extravaganza. It’s much more electronic than the last record.’’ ``Safe Trip Home,’’ which was released in 2008, was Dido’s last studio album. She is more eager to perform in front of fans with her new album. ``... I didn’t want to tour that

record for a really long time, partly because it was a really dark record and stuff, whereas this record, apart from anything, there’s a lot of really fun stuff on this record,’’ the 39-year-old said. Of course, before Dido goes on the road, she will be dealing with her first priority: her new baby. She did not perform at the Oscars because of her pregnancy, and after the baby is born, she plans to take time off. But for the moment, she is enjoying the ``very exciting’’ time in her life. ``There’s a real calmness about it which I think is really nice. Your decisions are sort of made for you,’’ she said, laughing. ``You just have this priority that is unchangeable, and I think that’s a great calmness that comes from that.’’ Nick Lachey writes fight song for Big East tourney The Big East tournament is so big, it apparently needs its own theme song and it’s getting one, courtesy of Nick Lachey. The 37-year-old pop singer, and Cincinnati Bearcats fan, penned ``Last One Standing,’’ a tribute to the men’s basketball tournament being played out this week at Madison Square Garden. The song will make its national debut

during the championship game on Saturday. ``My two biggest passions probably in life are sports and music, so for me it was a good opportunity to marry both in this song,’’ Lachey said during a break in Big East tournament play on Thursday. ``I think the Big East conference is the best in the

country, especially this year. I think we’re going to break a record for the most teams sent to the NCAA tournament this year.’’ The song’s chorus asks, ``Who’s the last, last one standing?’’ Unlike many of the slow, anthemic ballads that tend to play during the highlight reel at the end of tournaments, Lachey’s tune is a driving rock song. ``Writing it, I kept seeing these highlight packages, dunk after dunk after dunk,’’ the former ``Newlyweds’’ reality star said. ``Sports is so much about energy and all the excitement you get being there live at a game, and I wanted to capture it in a song.’’ Lachey was hopeful the song would be playing as his team _ the Cincinnati Bearcats _ held the trophy. But they were trounced by Notre Dame in a blowout Thursday night. His fiancee, Vanessa Minnillo, decided to sit out this tournament and stay at their home: ``It’s the middle of pilot season. She’s got bigger fish to fry. She’s gonna let the boys have some fun this weekend,’’ he said.Lachey plans to be at the championship, but he won’t be performing the song live: ``We kind of talked about trying to pull off a live performance, but it was too last minute to get a band together.’’ He believes ``Last One Standing’’ might be the first theme song for an athletic conference. After the tournament is over, he hopes the Big East will use the song for its other sports tournaments as well. ``My hope is that this is just representative of the Big East for many years to come,’’ he said. Evans struggles on new CD ‘Stronger’ By MICHAEL McCALL Sara Evans, ``Stronger’’ (RCA/ Sony Nashville) In the liner notes for Sara Evans’ new CD, she thanks ``everyone for waiting so patiently on me to make this record.’’ Indeed, it’s

been six years since the Missouriborn singer’s last album. As celebrity-gossip followers

know, she dealt with drastic life changes over those years. In 2007, she divorced her first husband, politician Craig Schelske, amid allegations of cheating on both sides; she quit the TV series ``Dancing with the Stars’’ mid-season to deal with the revelations. She then married a former star college quarterback, Jay Barker, uniting their seven kids under one roof after moving from Nashville to Alabama. So, predictably, Evans’ new song trumpets renewal and strength. However, the anthemic songs fall flat: On the fist-pumping ``A Little Bit Stronger’’ and the spiritually inclined ``Desperately,’’ Evans sounds oddly detached and the arrangements sound overly dramatic. But once she gets past the front-loaded survivor songs, she settles into layered tunes that better reveal her strengths. The multi-dimensional ``My Heart Can’t Tell You No,’’ about a woman who doesn’t fully break from the man who hurt her, and the breezy ``Anywhere’’ bring out a verve in Evans’ husky voice that is absent from the big showcase tunes. Check out this track: On ``Alone,’’ the album’s most powerful ballad, Evans conveys the knotty emotions of telling a lover she loves his attentiveness and devotion but she needs him to understand that, on occasion, she needs time to herself, too.

Let’s talk today about Invisalig , orthodontics with clear aligners

>> by Dr Valeria Soltanik

(dmd p.a. dn16609)

Invisalign treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks for the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by your dental practitioner. What’s more, a virtual 3D treatment

plan (ClinCheck®) shows the series of movements your teeth will go through over the course of the treatment. This allows you to see upfront what your teeth are expected to like at the end of the treatment. From the results of the ClinCheck, your custom-made, clear aligners are produced especially for you. If you’re ready for a smile that transforms your appearance, Invisalign is your answer. Although there are many choices out

there, no other treatment works as comfortably as Invisalign. Invisalign is the best way to transform your smile without interfering with your day-to-day life. A confident smile and increased sense of esteem isn’t the only benefit of correcting your smile with Invisalign — your oral health can be positively enhanced as well. Let’s evaluate some orthodontic dysfunctions that can be treated with Invisalign

Overly crowded teeth: occur when there is simply a lack of room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally. When left untreated, overly crowded teeth can cause an increased chance of gum disease as your teeth are harder to clean and can prevent the normal function of teeth. Widely spaced teeth: occur when you have extra space within your jaw. This could be due to small sized teeth, abnormal growth of jaw bones, genetics, missing teeth and/or tongue protrusion. When teeth are missing, this can also be caused by the other teeth shifting due to extra space. Spacing issues can cause some perio-dontal diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis, that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Crossbite: occur when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It usually causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, and can happen on both the front and/or the sides of the mouth. This issue can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease and bone loss. Overbite: occur when the upper teeth overlap significantly over the lower teeth.

It’s typically caused by either genetics, bad oral habits, or over development of the bone that supports the teeth. This issue can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth and can cause painful jaw and joint problems.

self-conscious - and should you have an important meeting or event coming up that’s causing concern, you can always remove the aligners for that short space of time. Smile healthy It’s easy to see that a straight, even smile of glossy pearly whites look great. But a cosmetically perfect smile often means it’s also a healthy smile. So put yourself in a healthy state of mind, and take a look at the additional benefits of a properly aligned smile. The impressions of your teeth will be digitized in order for your doctor to work with a computerized 3D image of your teeth. Then, your doctor will plan your tooth movements throughout your entire treatment timeline. You’ll be able to see a virtual representation of your teeth before, during, and after completion of the Invisalign process so you can see what your smile should look like when you’re done with treatment.Once you and your dental practitioner have agreed to the treatment plan, bespoke aligners are then custom-made for you and have to be worn for approximately two weeks before you switch to the next aligner in the series. While the number of aligners varies for each individual, a full treatment typically includes 18-36 aligners for both the upper and lower teeth which will take approximately 9-18 months depending on your individual case. For both adults and teens.

Underbite: occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth, usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can also be caused by missing upper teeth. This issue can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars which can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and joint problems. The Invisalign treatment can slot simply and easily into your daily routine, without any fuss or embarrassment. There are no metal wires or brackets, so no need to worry about mouth irritations, as the aligners are comfortable to wear and can be easily removed for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing as normal. If it weren’t for the remarkable way Invisalign transforms smiles, you’d hardly even notice you’re having treatment. As the Invisalign aligners are transparent and difficult to detect when worn, they allow you to straighten your teeth without feeling

St. Patrick’s Day

myamimagazine.com

More than 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades are held across the United States; New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. The First St. Patrick’s Day Parade The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place

not in Irelandbut in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmen serving in the English army. Over the next 35 years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called “Irish Aid” societies like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes (which actually first became popular in the Scottish and British

armies) and drums. In 1848, several New York Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades to form one New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Today, that parade is the world ‘s oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States, with over 150,000 participants. Each year, nearly three million people line the 1.5-mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Savannah also celebrate the day with parades involving between 10,000 and 20,000 participants BY DIANA MOSKOVITZ

That old green magic returned to downtown Hollywood

Guinness was the beer of choice. Green was the only wardrobe requirement. The most popular music involved bagpipes and drums. And it didn’t matter if your name was O’Shea, Schwartz or Sanchez — you were Irish and part of the party (unless you forgot to wear green).

themed Ford Mustang was third-grader and Junior Grand Marshal Abigail Qahhat, dressed in green from her clothes to the ribbons in her pigtail braids and weighed down by two armloads of green beads to toss. At age 5, she was diagnosed with leukemia; now her cancer is in remission.

So went the rules for the thousands who turned out for Hollywood’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival. It began with a parade that stretched down Hollywood Boulevard and continued into the evening with live Irish music, plenty of Irish food and pint after pint of green beer. The party and the clamor began before the parade. Traditional Irish music played, and revelers clinked beers and packed downtown bars, especially Mickey Byrne’s Irish pub, redolent of corned beef and cabbage. By the time the parade started, twin walls of green-clad people lined both sides of Hollywood Boulevard. The best view, the one reserved for the littlest, was the one from atop someone’s shoulders.

The regular trappings of a parade followed in quick succession: marching bands, floats and cheerleaders, all prompting applause and cheers.

Moments later came Little Flower’s float bearing the message, “Blessing Hollywood since 1926.” Rolling down the street in a shamrock-

Chance got the beads that day and, in the spirit of things, added them to his outfit. Chance definitely wasn’t Irish. Was Brinkley? “I really don’t know, maybe a little,” the 67 year old from Hollywood said, “but honorarily today.”

But this being a celebration of St. Patrick, the biggest applause was reserved for the bagpipe and drum corps. The crowd cheered at the sound of their feet in lockstep as their bagpipes wailed. Among the revelers was Kimberly Jenkins, 42, clad in green clothes and glittery shamrocks in her hair, shamrock earrings and even a shamrock-themed wristwatch. Her mother’s father was Irish, she said. In between waving at floats and grabbing green beads from the air, she explained that she splits her time between New Jersey and Hollywood, but always makes sure to turn out for Hollywood’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. “I love this parade,” she said. The love continued long after the parade ended. That’s when partiers turned their attention to the performance stage, and the most enthusiastic sang and danced to every song.Even Chance the dog, a white Maltese, got into the spirit of the day, trotting along in a green shirt and adding a strand of green beads to his collar. His owner, Steve Brinkley, said

Down came the grand marshal, the Church of the Little Flower’s Rev. Thomas O’Dwyer, who soon got out of the golf cart decorated top-to-bottom for the occasion with green and gold, and walked, smiling, shaking hands and passing out green beads. Two Irish wolfhounds marched close behind.

horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): Your decisions are based on security and safety. You want to forestall the effects of impending hardships. You see strength in numbers against social or organizational forces you see as working against you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Tensions that could bring the family together could also be pulling it apart. People need to respond constructively to adversity. The difference is in whether your traditional values give meaning to difficulties.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are moody today. You can be withdrawn at times then you come back with a serious approach to what had forced you away. You are fearful and hate being so. You take steps to change yourself or society to remove the fear.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): People are either enraged against you or are looking to you for leadership against those who have created their ire. You must make a crucial decision over the next two weeks whether to stand up of fold up.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The situation you’re in isn’t the one you want to have but it’s also what you must deal with. Instead of avoiding or escaping it, try to inject the values and vision that really matter so that you and everyone are more motivated.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You learn lessons the hard way. Experience counts for more than words now but, where they coincide, your beliefs are solidified. You are suspicious about glib explanations. You know you aren’t to blame.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): De-emphasize your romantic life and pay more attention to obligations at work. Your emotional confusion can cause bad decision-making so you need to pay more attention to what the real world presents in front of you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You want to study a situation more than you want to participate. However, this could be indecision or fear. he more you know, the more you must take a side and become active.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you are in a good economic situation, you prepare against a downturn. If you’re in a bad one, your austerities become more pronounced. Situations are tense, made worse by knowing that you’re missing potentially pleasurable activities.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You detect personal and procedural weaknesses today. You’re not inclined to take unfair advantage but you may be willing to let them pass. Instead, you should be proactively helpful and promote improvements.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A blow to your personal and professional goals has you making plans for a change or a comeback. You begin to decide the appropriate response to the people and forces that seem to be taking everything away from you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Your effectiveness is subtle, not direct. You are influential through encouraging people to follow their better natures and living up to high spiritual ideals. You don’t need to make a big, obvious impact.
