served as a tranquil paradise for the rich and famous such as George Clooney, Madonna, Donatella Versace and Sir Richard Branson. George Clooney who owns a mansion in the lakeside village of Laglio, spends up to four months every year amid the locals at his luxury 30-room Villa Oleandra. Sir Richard Branson is reportedly his neighbor, and is said to own the sumptuous Villa La Cassinella in Lenno, on the western side of the lake.

Luxury hotel Villa d’Este in Cernobbio village, occupies a pristine spot on the banks of the lake on the west coast, and is one of the most famous of Lake Como’s villas. Meanwhile the well-known and idyllic village of Tremezzo, situated near Lenno, is home to Villa Balbianello, with its magnificent gardens and unmissable views. The 17th century Villa Carlotta is also found here. One of Lake Como’s most visited villas boasts an immense garden offering more than 500 species and varieties of plants, trees and flowers including azaleas, rhododendrons and ancient cedars and sequoias, as well as a masterpiece by famous Italian sculptor Canova. The beauty of this picturesque region will always continue to draw in the celebrities, with its unique villages that hug the shore and seem to slow down time. The beautiful villas in their lush green gardens, the mountainous hinterland and the relaxed, courteous locals welcome all visitors with a smile, no matter who you are.
CONCIERGE TIPs A funicular from the east end of the lakefront saves the steep climb up to the terrace settlement of Brunate, almost directly above Como. The views encompass the town and southern lake, backed by mountains. Climb higher to reach a terrace (with a conveniently placed café) looking to the north, across a different panorama of lake and mountain views. A twohour climb from Brunate brings you to the summit of Monte Boletto. August - September 2017 | 15

Lake Como with its amazing landscapes and charming villas, has been the perfect location for movies, television series’ and TV commercials seen all over the World. • Ocean’s Twelve starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts among others, was filmed in Villa Erba in Cernobbio and Villa Oleandra (4) in Laglio, the latter also being George Clooney’s residence! • Spring 2006 saw the movie Casino Royale being filmed in front of Villa Balbianello and in Villa Gaeta, both in Menaggio. • Star Wars Episode II: Villa Balbianello has been the romantic background of the second episode of this famous saga. • In 2004, some scenes from the movie ‘The Other Man’, directed by Richard Eyre and starring Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney, were filmed in Villa D’Este. • Two Indian productions “ ‘Sir Vacharu’ ” and “ ‘Race Gurram’ ” set some of their scenes on the shores of Lake Como.

Abbazia di Piona (Abbey of Piona)
Villa Serbelloni (2)
Via Abbazia di Piona 57, Colico The 13th century Cluniac monastery of Piona surrounds the 11th century church of San Nicola and its beautiful Romanesque cloister. This small enclosure is surrounded by delicate, graceful columns, each with a different stone capital carved in motifs that include plants and animals. The cloister walls are covered in 14th and 15th century frescoes. In a shop near the gate, the Cistercian monks sell herbal lotions, honey and candies made with products from the abbey gardens.
Piazza della Chiesa 14, Bellagio High above town, the terraced gardens are spread around the historic Villa Serbelloni, which was clearly built to maximize the views of Lake Como and the Alps beyond. The highlight of the gardens, which are carefully landscaped in the 19th century Italianate style, are the rose gardens set in boxwood hedges. The villa is not open to the public, but the park is open for 90-minute guided tours (except during bad weather), which must be booked in advance at the Promo Bellagio office in Piazza San Giacomo
Villa Carlotta (1)
Villa Monastero
Villa Melzi (3)
Via Regina 2, Tremezzo, Como In Lake Como’s mildest spot the Tremezzina Riviera, foliage remains green all winter, so it’s no wonder one of Italy’s most famous gardens is here. Although the 18th century palace of Villa Carlotta is filled with sculpture and paintings, most tourists come to see its fabulous hillside of gardens. At their best in May, when the camellias and 12 meter tall banks of massed rhododendrons are in bloom, the gardens are filled with colorful flowers throughout the season.
Viale Giovanni Polvani, Varenna A long flight of stone stairs lead down into the terraced gardens of Villa Monastero. The formal beds of native and exotic plants that stretch along the shore have their share of statues, colonnades and miniature temples, but with a relaxed and unfussy air. The villa is now a conference center, open for tours when it’s not in use. The gardens are a short walk south of the town (where you should park, if driving) and is made up of a charming cluster of pastel houses along steep streets. Look for the parish church, with a giant fresco of St. Christopher on its façade.
Lungo Lario Manzoni, Bellagio The perfectly landscaped terraces and gardens surrounding Villa Melzi d’Eril, are all original to their early 18th century design, to frame lake views with cypresses and statues. Highlights are the water garden; a neoMoorish pavilion and the orangerie, where there are changing art exhibits. The neoclassical villa is not open.
Via Comoedia, 5 Como On the lake shore beneath steep Monte Crocione, Lenno is best known for the villa and gardens that cover Punta di Balbianello, a long peninsula that curves out into the lake. The Baroque villa, built for an 18th century Cardinal, is surrounded by terraced gardens where lake views are framed by columns and balustrades. The best way to get there is by boat from Lenno or on certain days, you can walk the trail to the villa.

believes in magic!
Il Gufo Autumn/Winter Collection is something magic to be worn daily, featuring prints with animals that disappear as if by magic on sweatshirts and T-shirts, crystal balls that reflect fantastic worlds, and splashes of colour that become sparkling raindrops on the most elegant fabrics dedicated to the most important occasions. The shapes themselves come from an abstract world where the linear nature of the classic geometric designs for clothes and outerwear is interrupted by irregularly applied macro and micro ruching. The materials are substantial without being heavy. Denim is present throughout the collection, in details and appliqués – frayed patches and flowers – that give even the most classic shapes a laid-back feel. Velvet, dynamic and contemporary in a jersey version, perfect for leaving children free to be themselves.
52 | August - September 2017
Kid’s STYLE The colour combinations are mixed to amaze. And, as always, attention in the choice of natural fibres such as Merino wool for the knitwear, certified by The Woolmark Company. Maxi knits with large weaves, blends, jacquard detailing that represents snowy peaks, and the heritage project with its prominent pom-poms.
Among the key pieces for next Autumn/ Winter is a jumpsuit for girls with an oldfashioned late 1970s typically Parisian feel and a faux-fur mini cape that adds timeless elegance to dresses in precious fabrics. For the boys, a T-shirt with magical crystal balls, a parka down jacket with hood and a multitude of jacquard sweaters garnished with micro geometric details and snow peaks. For babies the watchword is softness, evoked by imitation lambskin coats and snowsuits and by sweet little lamb appliqués and embroidery on playsuits, jacquard sweaters and dresses. Girls’ shoes are a triumph in velvet, including ultra precious ballerinas with jewel appliqués and more contemporary designs with laminated rock details. For boys, coloured laces and camouflage patterns breathe new life into the most classic designs. The must-haves of the season: super soft and exclusive lace-up slip-ons and sneakers in real lambskin.

Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) is a pair of residential towers in the Porta Nuova district of Milan, Italy, between Via Gaetano de Castillia and Via Federico Confalonieri, near Milan’s Porta Garibaldi railway station. They each have a height of 111 metres (364 ft) and 76 metres (249 ft) and hosts more than 900 trees approx. 550 and 350 trees in the respective towers) on 8,900m2 (96,000 sq ft) of terraces.

BEAUTY&WELLNESS Bosco Verticale by Boeri Studio won the 2014 International Highrise Award, deeming it to be the world’s “most beautiful and innovative highrise”. Selected from a competitive shortlist of towers by Rem Koolhass, Steven Holl and Jean Nouvel, the forested highrise was praised by the jury for bringing 900 trees and 14 thousand plants to Milan’s skyline. “The vertical forest is an expression of the human need for contact with nature” stated jury president Cristoph Ingenhoven. “It is a radical and daring idea for the cities of tomorrow and without a doubt, represents a model for the development of densely populated urban areas, in other European countries.” Stefano Boeri responded, “The vertical forest represents a new approach to the highrise building, where trees and humans share their living space. It’s the first example worldwide of a tower that enhances a city with plants and fauna biodiversity.”

The entire area is criss-crossed by canals and streams of crystal clear water. There is also an attractive lake with ducks, turtles and dense reedbeds, that have become a refuge for many aquatic birds. Not far away is Cascina San Romano, with it’s picnic area with fountains, tables and benches, and a portico roof for shelter.
70 | August - September 2017
BEAUTY&WELLNESS The area was created in a semi-abandoned agricultural area, and it was recovered through the work of volunteers such as the Comitato Amici del Bosco (Friends of the Forest Committee), with additional support from the Municipality of Milan during the 1980s. Today, ‘Bosco in città’ is managed by the Italia Nostra Association, which also performs the maintenance and extension of the surrounding green areas. ‘Bosco in città’ came to be, after a conference of Italia Nostra in 1970 on the “need for green in our cities”, following the example of cities in northern Europe. In 1973 the ‘Bosco in città’ initiative was started by a group of volunteers with help from the Scouts. It then became an association with the allocation of 35 hectares by the municipality of Milan. Today there are now 80 hectares. “For more than 30 years, the ‘bosco’ has been part of the culture of the city”, remembers one of the promoters, Sergio Pellizzoni.

This year’s 56th edition of the Stresa Festival offers no less than 26 appointments, all linked by a single main theme, so exciting you won’t want to miss them! The most important festival on the shores of Lake Maggiore, while focused as always on music, opens up to new forms of expression each year and this year it blends various disciplines – theater, dance, and multimedial effects, projecting the originals of old films. A completely fresh new item in 2017 offers encounters with well-known Italian writers. This is all gathered under the magic banner of music – always the main feature of the Festival - presented in stunning historic settings that will arouse the thrill and emotion of entertainment in exclusive sites opened specially for the Festival. Music, dance, live and visual theater are all site-specific events in the Stresa Festival’s novel artistic program for 2017. More than 400 artistes will perform this summer, not just in the music, though music is the thread leading through the whole ample program. It is divided as usual into three parts: the Midsummer Jazz Concerts, Meditations in Music, and the main schedule, which Gianandrea Noseda has called ‘Encounters’. This is his 18th year as Artistic Director of the Festival.

MUBA: PLAYING WITH LIGHT TO FIND COLOR!
MUBA is a permanent center of cultural and artistic projects for children aimed at promoting family game: the parents /adults are invited to share the museum experience with their children. The museum is in the middle of a beautiful public garden. Inside there are Rotonda Corraini bookshop and Round Bistrò restaurant. Three galleries inside, the garden and the external gallery become the space to taste local food (zero food miles) cooked in the kitchen, drink a cappuccino, try the “for kids” specialties, drink quietly an “aperitivo”, discover the pic-nic basket and all the specials for families.

PARTICIPATION
The exhibition was created with the goal of bringing children closer to the world of color and light through an exciting, active and sensory journey. The ability to properly use colors is not a gift of nature but it is the result of a proper education. Like music, color has some harmonious rules, and it is important to learn them since the preschool age. To understand color you must learn to see; knowing how to see gives us new keys for understanding reality. The interactive exhibition is divided into four different installations, created by MUBA and Francesca Valan an italian Color Designer, with the support of five professionals in the art, photography and photography industry. Every installation therefore has as a topic a particular aspect of color and light, with the aim, through experience and play, to discover and experience the scientific phenomena that govern this particular relationship. The children are asked to perform simple and instinctive tasks that pertain to their daily life: be it playing with shadows, hide-andseek, or passing through large colored tubes, every experience is aimed at the discovery of the colorful universe that surrounds us. At the exhibition you play without shoes, we recommend the use of non-slip socks!

proposing anew the rich Italian gastronomic tradition. Today, the Luogo, member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux Association and Les Grands Tables du Monde Association, is known above all for the style of its cuisine, as well as for the artistic-architectural space inprogress itself so desired by Stefania Moroni, promoting an inedited blend of cooking performances, food and wine tastings.
“Our cuisine is Italian and contemporary, with an eye on the future without losing touch with the past. Starting from the many different territories of our peninsula, we recover their perfumes and flavours and, with a contemporary, creative gesture, we bring them up to date” explains Alessandro. Within the confines of this Luogo, one will find dishes that have scanned the evolution of Italian cooking: top-quality and exclusive raw materials, fruit of years of research for their meticulous selection, all to bring to our attention also those lesser known or perhaps forgotten ingredients and cooking techniques. All is carried out with great respect for the original flavors, using recipes whose principal element is to appraise the uniqueness and goodness of the ingredients proposed in a singular way, richly revoking the past. A most able way, then, of preparing foods so as to bring out all the tasteful treasures which only certain ingredients can reveal.
“Our cuisine is not just recipes or techniques, instead, it comes from the extreme care we put into every single product we use and into every single step that leads to the dish” explains Fabio.

Dan Flavin at Chiesa Rossa Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa Via Neera 24, Milano Permanent Installation In 1996, following an invitation from Italian priest Giulio Greco, American artist Dan Flavin (New York, 1933-1996) created an artwork as the central element for the restoration and renewal of the Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa church in Milan, which was designed by Giovanni Muzio in the 1930s. Inside the church, the site-specific artwork Untitled, with green, blue, pink, golden and ultraviolet light, constitutes the sole source of illumination and permeates the entire space, accompanying visitors. Walking through the entryway, the chromatic succession of the nave, transept and the apse suggests the natural ‘night-dawn-day’ progression of light.
