“‘Animals’ invites us to reflect on the fact that we are not alone in this world among all the living creatures around us. Most importantly, this exhibition leaves visitors with the message that while human beings and animals share the same land, it is we humans which are the ones with the power to preserve the planet.” the curator Biba Giacchetti)

WONDER The Cultural Department of the Municipality of Milan, MUDEC and 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE, in collaboration with SUDEST57, have entrusted the opening of MUDEC PHOTO to the genius and sensibility of the great American photographer, Steve McCurry, with Animals, an exhibition project especially created for the Museo delle Culture. The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti. Animals will be the protagonists of 60 iconic photos, including both famous and lesser-known ones, illustrating the myriad everyday life stories binding animals and humans. This collective portrayal of moments of interaction touches upon the themes of the labour and support that animals offer man, the consequence of human actions on fauna and wildlife at a local and global level, and the affection that people shower on their “pets”, whatever they may be. While visitors are free to explore the exhibition as they please, an invisible map has been developed on three emotional levels, by alternating more fraught images with lighter, more positive ones. There are harsh images where nature had unleashed its power and forever altered the state of an area. Others are images of animals that tell stories of human survival. However, there are many charming, poetic or ironic visual narratives, such as the portraits of animals proudly posing alongside their owners. Some of these include a pink-haired dog in Hollywood, a snake worn like a necklace in an American supermarket, and a girl with two pet rats around her neck. McCurry takes us on a global journey to discover proximity to the animal world by focusing on emotional bonds and the consequences of human involvement to the environment. While his images are timeless, he seems to feel nostalgia for a world in constant and dangerous transformation that he can only illustrate.

Tommaso Mandrisi

MUDEC PHOTO, the new exhibition venue of the Museo delle Culture devoted to fine art photography, complements a museum established in 2015 yet already boasting a permanent collection of around 8,000 items – the heart and soul of the Museum – including artworks, everyday objects, textiles and musical instruments from the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.

PAUL KLEE.

AT THE ORIGINS OF ART

24 | February – March 2019

WONDER

The exhibition Paul Klee. Alle origini dell’arte (Paul Klee. At the Origins of Art), features a wide selection of Klee’s works on the theme of “primitivism” and offers an original reassessment of this concept, which in Klee embraces pre-classical periods of Western art (like that of Pharaonic Egypt); epochs previously considered “barbaric” or decadent, such as those of Late Antique, Early Christian, Coptic and early medieval art; and lastly African, Oceanic and Amerindian art. The show presents around a hundred works by the artist, on loan from major museums and private collection in Europe. It is also benefit from the extensive collaboration of the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern.

WONDER

The concept of “primitivism” in Klee assumes different characteristics from those commonly associated with the historical avant-gardes. An interest in everything that was “wild” and “primitive” in art was awakened in Klee during his first stay in Italy, from autumn 1901 to spring 1902, when he discovered Early Christian art in Rome. After his trip to Italy Klee considered himself an “epigon”, literally last born, a tardy heir of a glorious civilization in decline. He would never rid himself of this conviction and it led him, as he recounts in his Diaries, to transform his disappointment into “style”. The exhibition is divided into sections illustrating this process of artistic formation. From the caricature to the period in which Klee describes himself also as a “cosmic illustrator”, and an “epigraphic” primitivism featured, not coincidentally, in the section entitled “invented alphabets and hieroglyphics”. Another section is devoted to the puppet theatre that Klee built for his son Felix, which evidences his interest in children’s expressiveness and hence in the primordial origins of art which Klee, in keeping with his times, believed should be sought in the artistic expressions of certain populations of ethnographic interest.

A capsule collection, limited edition men’s bags SS 19 collection, with a unique and authentically Italian character is born from the meeting between two brands that have made the craft value and know how to make their distinctive mark. The craftsmanship, research and creation of luxury accessories make the story of Felisi, which begins in a small workshop of leather goods born in the cobbled streets of the historic center of Ferrara in 1973 to successfully land forty years later in the shadow of the skyscrapers in Tokyo and New York. A path born from the tenacity of a company that, growing and renewing itself, has never given up its vocation: that of making its bags of unique pieces destined to last, built with precious materials and original designs. Or like the story of Officina Slowear, a brand of strictly artisan accessories, made in Italy and in limited production, which comes from SLOWEAR Venezia - the all-Italian retail concept that has already conquered the world’s main shopping capitals and the hearts of customers and connoisseur , becoming one of the most interesting addresses where to find collections and products of undoubted industrial and design value, such as the Incotex trousers, Zanone knitwear and Felisi creations. From the meeting between these two stories and the affinity between the two brands, “Felisi x Officina Slowear” is born, a limited edition of three men’s bags that revisits just as many Felisi’s historical models with an original print born from the creativity of Officina Slowear. A tote bag for every day, a more capacious weekender to take with you for short trips and a practical and light clutch bag, IPad holder, reproduced in a special edition that combines the original Felisi design with the patterned fabric by Officina Slowear, a reinterpretation modern and minimalist of the timeless camouflage that blends colors and reduces contrasts to achieve a more sophisticated and contemporary effect.

An artist with a rich and long career, Brătescu developed a complex body of work that comprises drawing, collage, object, photography and performance. For Geta Brătescu, the purpose of art is to bring joy to our lives. She speaks of art as “a serious game”, which, albeit in a different context, can also be said about fashion.

“I very much relate to her idea of a studio as the place where everything is possible. Sadly, she passed on September 19, aged 92. This collection is one of her last projects and an homage to her and how she made playfulness a serious pursuit in art” (Albert Kriemler Paris, September 30th, 2018).

SHOPPING & STYLE

The 2019 spring-summer collection celebrates the indissoluble bond between Mario Valentino, Andy Warhol and fashion through careful and meticulous study of volumes and architectures that play between “softness” and asymmetry, all canons belonging to the design language, they are typical expression of fashion, with stylistic lightness and explosive characterization of color to highlight the true protagonist of the season, the heel. Always at the center of the emancipation of Italian artistic culture, the Mario Valentino company has brought Naples into the “great game of contemporary art”, making it a crossroads of meetings between local intellectuals particularly open to new and international masters of the caliber of Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe. Pop Art’s aesthetic imput blend with the typical character of 90s fashion, giving life to a collection that, on the one hand, draws on the creative universe of Warhol, on the other hand plays in an absolutely transversal way between eclecticism and mixtures of genres. Colors stolen from the rainbow, always vivid and bright, are offered in a wide range of colors ranging between color block and pastel shades, saturated shades of turquoise together with the typically American rose, from psychedelic green to energetic yellow, from pastel blue to vigorous orange, from cadmium red to China blue and classic black and white. The different materials used in the development of the models play to merge with heel, icon of seduction and true protagonist of the season: developed on 7 heights and declined in multiple styles and volumes (needle, octagonal, cage, monobloc and double with plateaux) has more and more the objective of slimming the female figure, giving her elegance and sensuality. The heel is an ideal continuation of the woman’s body. Each shoe becomes an art object and the heel tells its single story.

A cult store in the pulsating centre of Milan – in Largo Augusto – a space that both welcomes and recounts a new rhetoric of wonder, where elements of rare beauty constitute the exquisite narrative. This is the kaleidoscopic universe of L’Arabesque, composed of designer pieces from the 1950s and 1960s, alluring vintage clothing, collections of contemporary garments imbued with timeless elegance, sparkling vintage costume jewellery, extremely rare books on design, fashion and art, Haute Parfumerie fragrances and exclusive couture services. All of which are accompanied by the best traditional cuisine from a forgotten Milan. L’Arabesque is a treasure trove and veritable gathering place for lovers of art, fashion, design and fine cuisine. It’s the brainchild of Chichi Meroni’s creative genius. A prominent figure of Milanese culture, Chichi Meroni spent her formative years moving between the worlds of fashion and design, rubbing shoulders since then with the most creative and brilliant personalities who have contributed to Milan’s history. Her painstaking research and creative impulse are inspired by the etymology of the term “Arabesque” (a word used to define the extraordinary Moorish ornamental figures depicting stylised forms of plants and animals) translating the concept into a vibrant and visionary oneiric work, where dream becomes reality: a precious coffer composed of different spaces, where eyes hungry for beautiful things can finally savour the many creations on display, and where the senses are stimulated and have the opportunity to experience new splendours. A petit salon de curiosités housing colours, fragrances, flavours, shapes, plays of light and shadow, furniture, books, textiles, clothing and unique accessories. Through its visionary aesthetic, L’Arabesque celebrates the timeless bond between fashion, design and gourmandise; a lifestyle reverie whose extraordinary and enriching vintage identity breaks with the mundane.

HAMMAM DELLA ROSA - milan This is a spa that’s a fine choice for a day’s relaxing getaway. One of the oldest and authentic rituals of Hammam is Path Rose. For this treatment, black soap is sprinkled on the body before a steam bath, body peel, soap massage and Frigidarium, the after treatments of skin cleansing. Later on, you can unwind by drinking a mint tea and eating a specially prepared Arabic pastry in the Relaxation Room. A café is also open at Hammam Della Rosa and if you’re looking to hold an unusual but enjoyable party, then party themed evenings can also be held.

CULTI DAY SPA - milan Culti Milano is a day spa in the city center, just a short distance from Corso Vercelli with a refined, essentialist feel and it was created by Daniele Cantoni, founder of Spa-Concept. The ground floor is home to the Café-Restaurant Noy, with it’s sober design, a shop that sells flowers, plants, chocolates and other similar products and an automobile sales shop. A broad, simplistically but elegantly designed staircase with crystal parapets and a skylight above it leads to the sub-basement level where the spa is located. The reception desk bears the same relaxing, soft tones as the walls and appears to be situated in a sort of town square, surrounded by chairs and benches placed under wooden umbrellas, covered with cream-colored material. The entrance to the women’s area is on the left, along with an office and an area for private treatments. The men’s area, a separate section running parallel to that of the women, is off to the right. There are also two “common rooms”, with floating tubs (used alternately by women and men) and a relaxation room.

VILLA EDEN - Merano Merano’s Villa Eden is said to be the first centre in Italy to be devoted to health and beauty. It was opened in 1982, run by the Schmid family. Entrepreneur Karl Schmid devised the concept as the location of a “Destination Spa”. Come to Villa Eden, and you’ll be rewarded with a break that not only provides relaxation in abundance but helps the body out too. A good example of this is the Body Cast treatment which is an effective method to treat cellulite and localised fat deposits. Lasting for just under two hours, this treatment uses an occlusive wrap with a warming effect – the heat generated can help to dissolve the fat. Meanwhile, the Endermologie LPG System (a deep massage process that uses suction) can not only help the ageing process and reduce stress levels, it can also help to deal with injuries such as burns, bruises and sprains. A hand piece is used to massage the area in order to improve microcirculation, tone and silhouette. Other beneficial treatments include an anti-stress massage, a clay body treatment and an Iodine body scrub that uses Sicilian salts to exfoliate. The food on offer is appropriately healthy while being delicious! Other local amenities at Villa Eden include a light-filled indoor pool (perfect for swimming or water aerobics) and a beautiful park that offers a serene view with a panorama of apple orchards and a lake of water lilies.

HOW TO GET BEAUTIFUL HAIR The KERATIN TREATMENT

68 | February – March 2019

BEAUTY&WELLNESS

Keratin is the type of protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. Keratin can also be found in your internal organs and glands. Keratin is a protective protein, less prone to scratching or tearing than other types of cells your body produces. Keratin can be derived from the feathers, horns, and wool of different animals and used as an ingredient in hair cosmetics. Since keratin is the structural building block of your hair, Andreea Gavrilescu Concierge at Starhotels Business Palace

some people believe that keratin supplements, products, and treatments can help strengthen your hair and make it look healthier.

People who use keratin on their hair report that their hair is smoother and easier to manage as a result. The effects vary greatly depending on whether your hair is healthy to begin with, what the natural thickness of your hair is, and what kind of keratin treatment you use. Keratin works by smoothing down the cells that overlap to form your hair strands. The layers of cells, called the hair cuticle, theoretically absorb the keratin, resulting in hair that looks full and glossy. Keratin also claims to make curly hair less frizzy, easier to style, and straighter in appearance. February – March 2019 | 69

Salon keratin treatments

Sometimes called the Brazilian keratin treatment, this time-intensive method of using keratin involves

several steps. First, a cream that contains formaldehyde is applied to your hair before it’s blown dry and straightened in a salon. Once the treatment is applied, you’re instructed to keep your hair dry for several days. When you visit the salon to have the chemicals washed out, another treatment is applied to “set” the straightening effect. This treatment claims to last for 12 weeks.

Keratin supplements

You can find keratin supplements for sale at nearly any health food store. Keratin supplements come in powder and capsule

forms. Keratin supplements are not without risks. If overused, they can cause too much protein to build up in your body. Keratin treatments do have some benefits. By applying keratin to your hair cuticle and sealing it in with heat, your hair takes on a glossier appearance. Be carefull: it’s very important ask for a Keratin treatment without formaldheyde!

The National Museum of Science and Technology, with the main sponsorship of Audemars Piguet and the contribution of the IBSA Foundation, KLM, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Mondriaan Fund, presents the works of Theo Jansen, dutch artist for the first time in Italy. Theo Jansen is known worldwide for its spectacular kinetic installations Strandbeest (“beach animals”), hybrid creatures with a zoomorphic appearance that move using the thrust of the wind. From Wednesday 20 February to Sunday 19 May visitors can admire them in the “Dream Beasts” exhibition in Milan. Jansen studied Physics applied at the Delft University of Technology, in 1990 he started working on the Strandbeest project. His works may seem like skeletons of prehistoric animals or huge insects. Instead, they are gigantic creations made of materials of the industrial age: plastic flexible tubes, nylon thread and adhesive tape. They are born as algorithms and do not require engines, sensors or advanced technologies to move: they move thanks to the wind and air characteristic of the Dutch coast, their natural habitat. The exhibition aims to bring visitors to confront the values of innovation and sustainability communicated by the artist’s research defined by the international critics as “a modern Leonardo da Vinci”. Theo Jansen loves to combine scientific knowledge with suggestions of a humanistic nature, ranging from experiments on kinetics and mechanics to the exaltation of nature and beauty.

SOME APPOINTMENTS • Tuesday, February 19 Opening of the lecture by Theo Jansen, open to all visitors; • Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February Special weekend with activities for families; • Wednesday 27 February special visit for teachers; • Thursday, March 7, Dutch Night Dream Beasts, an extraordinary opening of the exhibition in which the Theo Jansen creatures come to life among visitors. The exhibition is part of the broader picture of the international events that will take place in Milan during the same period: the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the Leonardo da Vinci death, the Miart and the Salone del Mobile.

VIGEVANO AND TICINO

greater Milan

Looking at is current structure you would never say that Milan was once a city with canals, rivers and romantic bridges. But where there are roads with traffic day and night there use to be water. The construction of canals started in 1100 and it was Napoleon that finally completed the plan to connect Milan to the sea and the two main lakes in the north. The region is still very rich of water but most of the rivers have been forced underground and the only parts that remain visible of the complex canalnetwork is the Naviglio (Canal) Grande and the Naviglio Pavese in the South and the Naviglio Martesana in the north. From the north the water is brought into the city center through the Naviglio Grande from a very important river the Ticino, that connects the magnificent Lake Maggiore to the Po. Along this river for centuries boats brought marble from Candoglia to build the Duomo. Then the water goes out of the city on the Naviglio Pavese, that takes it back to the Ticino and into the Po. During a visit at Palazzo Morando you can see paintings of city as it was, before heading to the countryside to enjoy refreshing waters. It takes just a bit more than three hours to get from Milan to the famous Cinque Terre, a little over one hour to enjoy the sunset in the magnificent Genova; but there are places much nearer where you can lay on the beach along water and enjoy an aperitive on the river banks. 112 | February – March 2019

ENJOY From the Naviglio you can take a boat trip to Gaggiano to understand the close relation between the city and its countryside. Water has always been a blessing for this region for both agriculture and industry. The boat trip gives the chance to admire the farming efficiency, the numerous workshops of artisans and the remaining of the huge Richard Ginory Factory. Gaggiano is a small town where you can meat beautiful normal Italian towns. It has been inhabited for almost a thousand years, it was home of noble families that build Palazzo Venini Uboldi and Villa Marino, the country house of the rich banker that commissioned the Marino Palace in Milan, that is now the City Hall. Scattered in the rich countryside east of Milan there are many lovely villages that deserve a visit. Here nature has always been generous and agriculture and industries have flourished for centuries. Small towns preserve the old structure of all Italian towns: the main piazza with a big church, shops are concentrated along the main road to Milan and farther from the city center there are farms and stunning country villas. In Cassinetta di Lugagnano you can admire the Villa Visconti Maineri and enjoy a lunch al fresco on the navigli overlooking the ancient villas and farm houses on the river side. Castelletto di Cuggiono is very similar and you can see Villa Clerici, built in the middle of the 16th century with direct access to the river. From there you can take a boat to Bernate Ticino do admire old villas and farm houses on river banks or start to discover the Ticino Park, a huge Natural Reserve that develops along the river banks from the Lake Maggiore all the way to Pavia. There is a 9 km path of the Lanca di Bernate that take to a walk in the woods and nature and discover the Celtic

Moreover, the Ticino Park offers all kind of outdoor activities: swimming, walking, cycling, canyoning and rafting, equitation, hot-air balloons and birdwatching. The pebble-beaches on the river are a perfect retreat from the heart of the city in less than 45 minutes from Milan City centre. If you are more interested in culture you cannot miss Vigevano. It is a marvelous small city just across the river Ticino. Crowned by a huge castle it was home of the most important family of Milan: the Sforza. Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan during Renaissance, called Vigevano Home. His wife Beatrice D’Este held court here during the hot summers when the family retreated to escape the heat. Leonardo da Vinci was a guest here as well as Bramante, the famous arquitect. The main Piazza is alone worth a trip to the city, it was designed to form a forecourt to the castle and it is now a vibrant cultural and commercial center. To get access to the river Ticino walk to la Sforzesca to enjoy the view and rent a boat for a small boat tour on the river.
