THE SCALE MODEL OF THE DUOMO’S FIFTH DOOR, NEVER BEFORE REVEALED TO THE PUBLIC The event will be the ideal opportunity to present the restoration of the last plaster scale model of the Duomo’s Fifth Door, created by Fontana between 1955 and 1956. It has never been exposed to the public due to it standing near the Cantiere Marmisti della Fabbrica. It is the last of Fontana’s works for the Fifth Door of the Cathedral. A contest for which he created exhibits that were defined as “Arte Novissima” by the Fabbrica: a sacred art so modern as to never make it on the Duomo facade. As we know, the door was in fact assigned to Luciano Minguzzi, joint winner along with Fontana, of the competition announced by the Fabbrica to host the exhibit in 1950. The scale model is in addition to the other Fontanian gesso which is currently included the Veneranda Fabbrica’s collection, the Knight (il Cavaliere), created between 1951 and 1952.

WONDER The exhibition ‘Picasso Metamorphosis’, to be held at the Palazzo Reale from 18 October, will be a central feature of the autumn season in Milan: devoted to the multifaceted and fruitful relationship the Spanish genius entertained with myth and antiquity throughout his remarkable career, it aims to explore his intense and complex creative process from this particular perspective. Promoted and produced by the Cultural Department of the City Council of Milan, Palazzo Reale and MondoMostreSkira, the exhibition is curated by Pascale Picard, Director of the Civic Museums of Avignon. The project is part of an itinerary devoted to the great artist that Palazzo Reale has been developing for decades: a genuine cycle of Picasso exhibitions that has made the relationship between the Spanish master and Milan a special one. It all started with the display of Guernica in the Sala delle Cariatidi (Hall of Caryatids) in 1953: a remarkable event and a genuine gift to the city from Picasso. Almost half a century later, this was followed by the grand retrospective exhibition organized, in collaboration with the artist’s heirs, in September 2001, four days after the attack on the Twin Towers. Finally, the monographic exhibition of 2012 provided a chronological overview of the different techniques

WONDER and means of expression marking the Spanish master’s oeuvre. With ‘Picasso Metamorphosis’, the focus shifts to the various expressions of antiquity to be found in the mythologies reinvented by Picasso and illustrated in the six sections of the exhibition through the juxtaposition of works by the great artist and ancient ones – pottery, statues, votive plaques, reliefs, idols, and stelae – that have inspired and deeply influenced him. The exhibition ‘Picasso Metamorphosis’, therefore, aims to delve into the intimate workshop of a world-class artist in the light of the ancient sources that have inspired his work. But it also aims to reveal the underlying mechanisms of a unique alchemy that set antiquity at the heart of modernity, and which proved crucial for 20th-century art.

The new exhibition, curated by Urs Stahel and arranged in the PhotoGallery space, offers a reflection from many viewpoints on the theme of speed characterising today’s global society. The pendulum symbolises the constant motion of the world and its inhabitants through space and time. Its swinging is synonymous with sudden changes of opinion or beliefs that turn around to their exact opposite. Its image also evokes commuter traffic: the millions of people who travel into cities early each morning and come back tired, to their commuter towns in the evening. But the pendulum is also a valid symbol for traffic in general, for that constant exchange of goods for other goods, for money, for promises. This incessant dynamism contrasts with the opposite phenomenon, as Urs Stahel explains: “Over the decades, the emphasis on speed and productivity has been constantly ramped up. Ever since the beginning of industrialisation, we have been accelerating at a dizzying pace. There is only one area in which we are slowing down, and seeking standstill: migration. The losers in the modern world, both local and global, are being radically sidelined.” The exhibition visually illustrates the contrasting and diametrically opposed energies that issue forth from these two phenomena: on the one hand, the unbridled force of engines, an enormous increase in speed, and means of transport transformed into the fetish of our times; and on the other, a slowing down, a sharp, violent braking, halting the flows of migrating people. From Markowitsch’s Psychomotor to Doisneau’s Renault photographs, Edgar Martin’s BMW Paintshop, Mula’s racing cars and Luciano Rigolini’s three-part car fetish temple, what ultimately brings the exhibition together in the end is the strident dissonance of their clash with the wall on which the complex installations by Ulrich Gebert and Xavier Ribas address the issue of migration and nomadic life. Migrants caught in a place where they do not know whether they are coming or going, anxiously wondering whether they will be allowed to move on or be shipped back again. The entire system in one image. 34 | December – January 2018

Milan is of course Italy’s privileged destination for shopping and in these days the choice gets even richer and caters to every taste: one can range between the luxury of fashion shopping in the Quadrilatero della Moda or Fashion District, between via Montenapoleone and via della Spiga, where the pret-à-porter brands are concentrated, to Milan’s Botteghe Storiche, where craftsmanship and quality are handed down generation after generation, and can be discovered walking through areas quite close to the city center. of the Brera Quarter with a long line of shop windows where traditional Milanese brands are mixed with new boutiques. At closing time the whole neighborhood resonates with the nightlife of Corso Como, the Isola district and their crowded bars. Alternative design, secondhand clothes and streetwear can be found in Porta Ticinese, to be discovered walking between the San Lorenzo columns and the Naviglio Grande, lit up for the festivities. The most popular names in international fashion gather in Corso Buenos Aires instead, a veritable city mall along one of Europe’s most important commercial streets. The time for Christmas excitement and the search for presents starts on December 7, when the city draws on its ancient soul to celebrate its patron Saint, Ambrose. At this time, for those who love traditional Christmas markets, the Oh Bej, Oh Bej is back: for centuries it has offered visitors delicatessen, sweets, handicrafts and a hot cup of mulled wine – it is now held by the ramparts of the Castello Sforzesco. The name Oh Bej, Oh Bej (pronounced Oh Bey) comes from the Milanese children’s traditional cry of “how beautiful, how beautiful…” when shown the toys and sweets on sale. Almost at the same time, on December 9th the Milan Rho Trade Fair exhibition grounds hosts L’Artigiano in Fiera (The Artisan at the Fair) the market – exhibition dedicated to Italian and international craft. Once there, it is impossible not to get lost among the various stands, looking for that last Christmas present or tasting foodstuffs from all parts of Italy and most of the world. After the weekend, the stalls will not disappear: that is the moment in which new markets open across the whole city, starting with the one in Piazza del Duomo, around the cathedral. SHOPPING & STYLE from the major squares to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, from La Scala to the historical fashion and shopping stops. La Scala Theatre inaugurates its new season on December 7 with a performance-event much to be talked about in the media. The work chosen by Maestro Riccardo Chailly for 2018 is Giuseppe Verdi’s Attila, directed by Davide Livermore, a director and a lightdesigner guaranteeing originality. It will be possible to follow La Scala’s Opening Night in various theatres and public locations, including Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, where it will be shown live free, thanks to the Prima Diffusa project. Furthermore for the whole week many spots all over the city will resonate with the music of Attila, while there will be a choice of meetings, concerts and exhibitions on the subject of Verdi’s opera. The extended audience will be led into the atmosphere of the show by La Scala Academy personnel who, before and during the performances, will introduce to the tumultuous stories Verdi put to music. Christmas lights are another classic and in recent years Milan has started to develop this tradition creatively and with an artistic bent. Right at the heart of the city the great Christmas tree in Piazza del Duomo, selected every year with an eye to sustainability, is lit up during an opening event. Not only Piazza del Duomo, but the whole city brightens with light installations, from the Galleria’s spectacular vault to the street illuminations far from the city center, to the locations included in the Luci a Milano (Lights in Milan) project, which will transform a significant number of squares in a great artistic Christmas Lights Show. Legend has it that this currant and candied orange-stuffed cake was invented in the 15th Century by a kitchen apprentice at the court of the Duke of Milan, Ludovico il Moro, and was actually a last-minute solution in place of a mismanaged and more complex dessert. It has been reserved a special celebration on Sunday, December 16, with a specially decorated panettone coated in chocolate that will be exhibited in Galleria. In the preceding days restaurants, patisseries and bars will offer special tastings. In 2017 the largest handmade panettone ever (2 meters high and 140 kilos) was portioned out to 1200 persons in the Galleria. Shall we have an even bigger one in 2018? For the eleventh year in a row, Palazzo Marino (the City Hall) hosts for the whole Christmas period an artistic masterpiece on loan from an Italian museum – it can be visited free of charge. In the last editions thousands of people have been able to admire works by Titian, Rubens, Canova, Caravaggio, De La Tour, Leonardo. This year it will be Perugino’s Adoration of the Three Wise Men, a Renaissance masterpiece from Umbria’s National Gallery. Umbria will also lend to Milan a beautiful traditional crib scene on display at Palazzo Marino, the Town Hall. There’s no shortage of great temporary exhibitions at Palazzo Reale either: Picasso, Metamorphosis, in which Picasso’s works converse with classics of ancient art on loan from collections across the world and Carlo Carrà, one of the Italian 20th century masters, on his journey from Futurism to Metaphysical Art and beyond. Milan has a special way to celebrate the coming of Christmas and that is the Advent’s Musical Calendar. Every December evening a surprise will meet the onlookers’ gaze on a palace in Piazza Duomo, a new surprise with each passing day until Christmas. This is of course not the only musical event at a time of the year that has its own exclusive soundtrack: among the many offers the traditional Christmas concert in Piazza Duomo, offered to citizens and visitors a few days before Christmas itself, featuring famous classical ensembles and choirs every year, and New Year’s Eve Celebration in Piazza Duomo, which has seen onstage, waiting for midnight, famous artists such as Mario Biondi, Vinicio Capossela or bluesman Bombino. La Scala is open for the holidays and celebrates in the illustrious company of Vivaldi, Mozart and Verdi: two Christmas concerts on December 22 and 23 will be reserved for sacred music, while on December 31 Verdi arias will be performed by four great operatic singers, Maria José Siri, Jorge del Leòn, Simone Piazzola e Riccardo Zanellato. Four great singers for Beethoven’s Ninth as well: with its “Ode to Joy” it has been Orchestra LaVerdi’s New Year’s soundtrack for the last twenty years. Karina Gauvin, Sonia Prina, Moritz Kallenberg, e Jochen Kupfer will be at the Auditorium di Milano from December 29 to January 1, along with the renowned Milanese orchestra, Conductor Claus Peter Flor and Choirmaster Erina Gambarini. Finally, as on every winter, some season classics will of course be available, such as Christmas villages dedicated to children and various ice rinks for skating. Traditional and innovative, festive and intimate, Christmas in Milan is there to be discovered, with a rich calendar of events and quality experiences to make the most of.

Giardini Segreti, this is the name of the iconic collection by Pasquale Bruni dedicated to the secret courtyards of Milan, its hidden gardens, real gems protected in the heart of the city, magical places which tell stories of secret encounters, art and nature. Giardini Segreti are pieces of jewellery in gold and diamonds which are born to sinuous leaves and create floral motifs. The seductive collection of rings is shaped on hands in order to obtain a perfect and sensual fit, in harmony with the body and its movements. Rings dress the hands in an unusual, intriguing and feminine way to give every woman the chance to create her garden, with the union of two or more rings creating continuous secret shapes. Each ring and pendant is also designed to accompany the Italian-made silk square which echoes the floral motif of the collection. Playing with the jewellery and the scarf, multiple looks can be created: from a precious scarf to a soft bag or worn in the hair to create a gem turban. “It is fascinating and gives a real sense of joy to see how a tree wears its leaves in the dazzle of daylight,” says Eugenia Bruni, creative director of the Maison. “Nature conceals infinite secrets to discover and experience first-hand to feel like a flower in the most invaluable garden of life.” The collection offers precious matching pendants and earrings which follow the lines of the body and to which a charm of leaves can be added for a daily chic look that is transformed into wear for important evenings.

MERù the jewel is Animalier fantasy! Merù, a well-known Milanese brand that has marked the history of the finest Italian jewelry, now in its second generation, is one of the very few companies that have evolved in harmony with the tastes of customers and following the fashion trends in Milan. During the 80s there was a real explosion and the brand gained fame all over the world because it sold original and absurd jewels that no one would have dared to wear. Today, in addition to being a symbol of great success of Made in Italy in the world, in Milan for Christmas it is tradition to give a jewel Merù, attention because not everyone knows that there are long lines outside the small shop in Via Solferino at number 3. The Cova Panettone is an authentic symbol of the Milanese tradition and deeply belongs to the Milanese heritage. A jealously guarded secret since the early 19th century, the recipe for the Cova Panettone has been carefully passed from generation to generation. Made by hand using superior natural ingredients, this traditional delight boasts an airy lightness, sweet speckles of candied fruit and zests of fresh oranges, just a few of the steps in the recipe. The Panettone is the quintessence of Christmas but Romano Conte Head Concierge at Hotel Principe di Savoia

BOCCONCINO The artisanal schiacciata!

is born in MILAN

TASTE

BOCCONCINO, the first restaurant dedicated to artisanal “schiacciata”, opened the first format in Milan on November 13 in piazzale Baracca 6. But what is the schiacciata? The schiacciata is a focaccia of ancient tradition, typical of Tuscany, based on simple, genuine and characteristic ingredients of the Mediterranean diet: water, flour, olive oil, salt and yeast. It is found in all the bakers of Tuscany and also in many other areas of Italy, the schiacciata of BOCCONCINO is artisanal and mostly stuffed. It is offered in three variations of dough: the classic one, the one with 5 cereals and the dough of the month. In November, for example, was proposed the schiacciata with pumpkin dough. Every month it surprises for the different dough, depending on the season and the products it offers, the names also change. At this moment we find #LAMATTA #PORCELLA #LALOCANDIERA # BOCCONCINO # SCACCIAPENSIERI #LADIVINA #LAVEGANA #LAPRECISA you can personalize your schiacciata by freely combinations of various available ingredients. The first Bocconcino is in streetfood style and has been mainly designed for take-away and home deliveries through Foodora and Deliveroo partnership. “Bocconcino doesn’t stop”, underlines Andrea Sampietro, owner of the Milanese restaurant, “two new openings are arriving between Sarpi and Ticinese areas and we have many other projects in the pipeline”. TASTE messaggio promozionale

It opened its doors on the Navigli area last November 13th, in the heart of the Milanese nightlife, PRIMA MILANO Comfort Food & Bar: a suggestive location of European inspiration, born from the idea of two young entrepreneurs and connoisseurs of good food, Rudy Corpetti and Gianluca Proietti. Hence the desire to design an eclectic and always open restaurant, from 7:30 am to 2:00 am. The “PRIMA”, doesn’t the only one, news? The “first” real news is the PINSA. The real PINSA: it is a review of a historical recipe that dates back to the time of Ancient Rome. The Pinsa, like very similar to the focaccia, was cooked by farmers outside the walls with cereals and aromatic herbs. Today’s recipe is revisited and provides a mixture of three flours, wheat, rice and soybeans, in the name of lightness and the highest quality.
