The Renaissance Oratory of the 1600s with religious frescoes, the parish church with its bell tower from the 1500s, the rich library, the belvedere, the private residences with 18th century decorations and the ancient source, are the most characteristic attractions of this town accessible with a funicular from Argegno that in a few minutes exceeds the level of 540 meters with a slope of 71 degrees. The houses leaning against each other and the steep staircases are overlooking one of the widest Lake Como’s view giving unique emotional moments. The history of Pigra dates back to 1335 under the lordship of the Visconti; in 1416 it was a fief of the Rusconi and in 1527 it ended up under Gian Giacomo de ‘Medici, known as il Medeghino, who from Musso’s castle had taken possession of the whole Lario and its surroundings, in 1583 it was owned by the Marliani and in 1713 by the Riva.

WONDER In her series “Forever Mothers” (2012-2018) and “Nine Months of Reborning” (2014), Jamie Diamond documented the life of an outsider art making community called the Reborners, a group of self-taught female artists who hand-make, collect and interact with hyper-realistic dolls that fulfill a desire for motherhood. In her other exhibited project titled “I Promise to be a Good Mother” (2007-2012), Diamond played the role of a perfect mother, dressing up in her own mother’s clothes and interacting with Annabelle, a reborn doll. Inspired by and named after a diary she kept as a girl, the project evolved into an exploration of the complexity of social stereotypes and cultural conventions that surround and shape the relationship between mother and child. “Still Lovers” (2001-04), a series of photographs that brought Elena Dorfman international acclaim, focuses on the domestic lives of men and women who devote themselves to lifesize, anatomically realistic sex dolls. Her photographs explore the emotional ties between humans and perfectly formed synthetic women, forcing us to evaluate our own notions of love and the value of an object that has the power to replace a human being. The artist’s interest was not to exploit the deviancy of these sexual surrogates, but rather to reveal the fascinating world of intimacy between flesh and silicone. Both photographers portrayed these lifelike surrogates as desired, fetishized, and idealized beings, “living” as such with their flesh and blood mothers and partners, and sometimes with their immediate families as well. As stated by Melissa Harris, “by showing these vignettes of traditional domesticity, love, and/or eroticism, Dorfman’s and Diamond’s representations take on an unexpected poignancy.”

Broken Nature:

Design Takes on Human Survival Broken Nature is an in-depth exploration of the strands that connect humans to the natural environment that have been intensely compromised, if not entirely severed, over the years. By casting a wide net on architecture and design projects, the exhibition will underline the concept of restorative design, highlighting objects and concepts at all scales that reconsider human beings’ relationship with their environments – including both natural and social ecosystems. The XXII Triennale di Milano comprises a selection of circa 100 projects from the last three decades, examples of restorative design, architecture, and art from all over the world. Among them, Broken Nature includes new installations and objects – like Alexandra Fruhstorfer’s Transitory Yarn, Dominique Chen’s Nuka-doko, and Google Brain’s Whale Song – and milestones like Pettie Petzer and Johan Jonker’s Hippo Roller, Elemental’s Quinta Monroyhousing, Martino Gamper’s 100 Chairs in 100 Days, and Zach Lieberman et al.’s Eyewriter lowcost, open source eye-tracking system. These projects, which have played an essential role in the history and advancement of design, have in some cases had a memorable impact on society and in the way humans related to the world around them. This is the first time that these projects are all placed within the same conversation, and in fact the same space, with the aim to unearth design’s potential to mediate societal and behavioral changes. A number of directly commissioned works complement the loans in the thematic exhibition. The commissions include: Accurat, Formafantasma, Neri Oxman e Sigil Collective.

THE EUROPEAN PREMIERE OF THE ANTHROPOCENE EXHIBITION

WONDER

Edward Burtynsky Clearcut #1, Palm Oil Plantation, Borneo, Malaysia 2016 photo © Edward Burtynsky, courtesy Admira Photography, Milan / Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto

The Anthropocene project is a multimedia exploration that documents the indelible human footprint on the Earth from concrete seawalls in China that now cover 60% of the mainland coast, to the biggest terrestrial machines ever built in Germany, to psychedelic potash mines in Russia’s Ural Mountains, to the devastated Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and surreal lithium evaporation ponds in the Atacama desert, from the marble quarries in Carrara to one of the world’s largest landfill sites in Dandora, Kenya. The exhibition is made up of various elements including 35 photographs by Edward Burtynsky that illustrate such examples of human impact as the mining of natural resources, deforestation, large-scale transport infrastructures, climate change, landfills and pollution. Four large-scale high resolution murals, created with state-of-the-art photographic technologies, provide astounding visual experiences and allow viewers to examine the scale of humanity’s complex incursions on the Earth. The murals are enhanced with film extensions by Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier, that will deepen contextual understanding by exploring detailed scenes within the wider view.

38 | August – September 2019

WONDER

The film extensions present visitors with an immersive experience, highlighting the relationship between mediums in Burtynsky, Baichwal, and de Pencier’s larger collaborative work, and connecting each location to the tenets of the Anthropocene. Visitors can access these film extensions through the free AVARA app, available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play. Pre-loaded tablets will be also available for free at the MAST. The exhibition will also feature an extensive series of film installations from Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier. These are vivid meditations on the Anthropocene from around the world that convey scale and impact in a time-based medium. From the world’s longest railway tunnel in Switzerland to Kenya’s historic ivory burn in 2016, to phosphor tailing ponds in Florida and unprecedented coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef, Baichwal and de Pencier’s installations employ state-of-the-art camera techniques to document the evidence and experience of human planetary domination. Central to the exhibition are three augmented reality installations which, similar to the film extensions, can be accessed through the free AVARA app for smartphones and tablets. Made up of thousands of still images, and assembled through a process called photogrammetry, each augmented reality installation will give the visitor an immersive experience thanks to near-to-scale, photo-realistic 3D images.

the ancient town, which spread over a much larger surface. You can see the amphitheatre, the theatre, two residential districts and some urban roads. The baths, the urban gates and the forum, instead, were reburied after the archaeological excavations. However, now it is possible to see them again thanks to the three-dimensional reconstruction of this guide. The town is likely to have originated in connection with the foundation of the Postumia Way, from Genoa to Aquileia (province of Udine), in 148 BC. Probably, however, the measures taken in 89 BC, through which the local people were awarded the Latin citizenship, determined the real start of the urbanization process. Already at the beginning of the imperial age, a change took place in the commercial strategy, resulting from the foundation of the Aemilia Scauri and Iulia Augusta Ways.

40 | August – September 2019

WONDER

These roads affected directly the territory of western Liguria (Vada, i.e. Vado Ligure, province of Savona), driving to a progressive decline and abandonment of the site. The rediscovery of the town took place when the Turin-Genoa “Royal way” was opened (1820-1825) and the Genoa-NoviTurin (1850-1852) and Genoa-Milan (1912) railway lines were built. Only in 1924, given the protective restrictions safeguarding the archaeological heritage, the destruction stopped and intervention began to consolidate and restore the monuments. As far as the general layout of the urban plan is concerned, the experience of the Roman colonies is here applied with two of the three major components of a town: the network of the roads crossing at right angles and the forum in a central position; the presence of walls is uncertain. Interesting criteria were adopted in the urban planning, which nowadays might be referred to as the “zoning concept”, that is the distribution of areas according to their specific function. Indeed, besides the major services concentrated in the forum, spaces and buildings destined to amusement and leisure time – such as theatre, baths, and amphitheatre – were located in the north-eastern sector of the town within a coordinated and functional system. The almost square blocks of the residential areas were arranged with an exemplary clear design.

42 | August – September 2019

The Theatre The theatre was a semi-circular building in which tragedies, comedies and other ancient forms of entertainment were performed. The theatre of Libarna is dated to the first century AD. The building was located in the north-western part of the urban area. Our understanding of the building and its monumetal nature is now limited because the original excavations were carried out at a time when the main interest was simply in bringing to light the monuments; and because the structure has been much damaged by the activities of farmers and by the construction of two railway lines. Nevertheless, the theatre must have been outstanding both in terms of its architecture and its decoration, as is revealed by the finds of decorated architectural elements, precious marble revetments, and painted plaster. The crucial parts of the theatre were made of concrete that was faced with small stone blocks and with courses of brick. The building was probably designed on two levels: an ex-ternal ambulatory with twenty-two arches supported by pillars on sandstone bases and an upper order that was probably blind, without openings. There was a central, main entrance, flanked by two side entrances, and four secondary entrances at the ends of the radial corridors giving access to staircases. In the interior, the cavea and scaena formed a single, unified block, which allowed for ex-cellent acoustics. In front of the orchestra, that is the semi-circular space between the steps and the stage (originally intended for the chorus’ performances), the holes that housed the lifting mechanisms for the curtain can still be seen in the foundations of the stage. As was usual, at the back of the stage building there was a porticoed garden (porticus post scaenam), probably with a fountain in the middle. Here the spectators could walk between one show and the next. The theatre could host several hundred spec-tators.

WONDER

The Amphitheatre The amphitheatre was a building for performances, with an elliptic plan, where munera (gladiator combats) and venationes (wild beast hunts) took place. Since this type of building spread out relatively late, the location of the amphitheatre is (almost) always marginal within the city. This also happened for problems of public order and to facilitate the access and flow of large masses of spectators. Therefore, the amphitheatre often rose outside the city walls. However in some cases there is also evidence for monuments located inside the city. This is the case for Libarna, where the amphitheatre, built in the first century AD, stood within the urban perimeter, in the eastern sector of the city, perfectly integrated in the urban plan and in line with the decumanus maximus and the cardines. The building occupied an area equal to two blocks and was surrounded by an open space lined by a rectangular precinct, with the function of integrating the plan of the building into the orthogonal grid. The main entrance was likely on the western long side, aligned with the decumanus maximus. Three other entrances opened at the edges of the ellipse axes. In particular, the northern and southern entrances were used during the procession inaugurating the games and for transporting outside men and beasts killed or injured during the performances. The building belonged to the so-called “type with segmented embankment, different from the canonical model, which was completely built with an undifferentiated sequence of su-perimposed arches, radial walls and annular galleries, as in the case of the Colosseum. The building had a sunken arena with bleachers (cavea) on an artificial embankment

44 | August – September 2019

WONDER sup-ported by annular retaining walls and a system of pairs of radial walls, which housed the stairs to reach the upper seats accessible through vaulted galleries (vomitoria). A special platform was reserved for the authorities. According to the reconstruction hypothesized by the excavators, the external perimeter was arranged on two orders. The masonry consisted of rectangular blocks of stone set in lines alternating with rows of bricks, with an internal core made of cement. Lesenes, bases and horizontal mouldings were ma-de of sandstone. The surface of the arena was in beaten earth and delimited by a podium about two meters high. In the middle stood some underground service rooms, likely cove-red by a wooden ceiling. Used to host machines and rise tools, animals and human beings during the show, they were accessible through galleries from the eastern and western en-trances.

The Houses At Libarna the first evidence of residential architecture dates back to the period between the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD. Remains were brought to light in large part of the socalled “amphitheatre neighborhood” and along the “theatre road.” Nowadays it is hard to understand the phases and arrangement of the houses, due to the fragmentary documentation provided by the excavations and also because of the spoilages carried over after the abandonment of the site. The first phase of the two blocks adjacent to the amphitheatre can be dated to the lateRoman republican/Augustan period (late first century BC - end of the first century AD). At that time each block was divided into a large healthy domus and three more modest dwellings with a partially covered courtyard and rooms with commercial function (tabernae). At the end of the first century AD the blocks underwent a sort of architectural “conversion”, probably related to the construction of the amphitheatre. The two large houses with atrium and peristyle were divided into lots, while a requalification took place allowing for manufacture and commerce, with shops, workshops for wool dyeing (fullonicae) and a physician’s study. Libarna never had a demographic growth that would justify the presence of dwel-lings on more levels destined to host several families (insulae).

Starting from the memory of the ancient knowledge that is linked to the prestigious story of the Venetian Calegheri guild (documented since 1268), up to the modern industrial production, that makes this district an excellent example of the successful Venetian enterprise. From the use of the “shoe” as chance for some educational workshops for schools, to the possibility to live the Villa also today as main Venetian heritage. Rossimoda is a shoe factory born in 1947 and that, from the 60s, has produced women luxury shoes on license agreement for the most important brands of fashion, such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Fendi, Givenchy, Emilio Pucci and many others. For the first time, not only in Italy but in Europe, an authentic “House of Tango” will combine the best in exquisite Argentinian food and wine with the sensuality of tango. The most intense and erotic of dances, tango was illicit in the early 1900s, a time of traditional and conformist values. In one word: Prohibited – “Prohibido”. From September 27th, 2019, as dusk gives way to night, in Milan, at the exclusive “El Porteño Prohibido” (via Macedonio Melloni 9), every Friday and Saturday, you will be able to partake in one of the most popular traditions of Buenos Aires. A unique opportunity to experience first hand the most authentic and evocative porteño atmosphere, and feel immersed in the social, artistic and literary evolution of Argentinian society through the medium of tango, declared part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009. The artistic director is none other than Miguel Angel Zotto, iconic choreographer, dancer, and one of the most influential and respected figures in the world of Argentinian tango. For the inauguration he has created a unique, truly theatrical musical show, PROHIBIDO. For this project he will choreograph, direct and perform in new shows every three months. Prohibido is a totally new and innovative show, every detail created by Miguel Zotto: choreography, costumes, light design, and musical selection. The stage of “El Porteño Prohibido” will host a cast of internationally renowned dancers of the Dorrego Company. They will be performing to live music by a traditional tango orchestra, to share the secret and deeply private feeling of the most authentic tango. and meaningful. Starting from Maria La Vasca, manager one of the most famous “Houses of Tango” of Buenos Aires: these were houses of ill repute, even brothels, where prohibited love and dance were available to all. A second tableaux brings us the atmosphere of the theatre of José González Castillo, specifically “Los Invertidos”, that debuted in Buenos Aires in 1914 and was immediately censured because it explicitly displayed and questioned the perverted and dissolute lifestyle of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Next, a well-deserved homage to Carlos Gardel, the mythical Argentinian tango singer and composer, with a unique, unmistakable voice in a repertoire of over 900 tango recordings. The final tableaux brings us into the world of the magazine “Rico Tipo” by the cartoonist and caricaturist José Antonio Guillermo Divito, and his influence on Argentinian society between the mid 1940s and the 1970s, specifically on male and female porteño fashion and “dressing up Buenos Aires as if it were a milonga”.

A discovery journey in music that explores the places, traditions and languages that have left their marks on the world’s cultures. Geographies is the theme of the 2019 edition of MITO SettembreMusica, the music festival that for 13 years running has brought together host cities Milano and Torino in their commitment to music and community. In today’s global society, which has broken down barriers and spurred mobility, traditional concepts like cultural identity and geographical affiliation have been transformed into fluid values that are constantly being redefined. Thus MITO SettembreMusica – which runs September 3-19 – becomes an opportunity to explore both the repertoires from the many different countries that have made the history of music what it is today, and contemporary production by composers who are the offspring of the new transnational nomadism. A program centered around a theme that’s of the utmost relevance in today’s world, one that surveys actual physical geography – from Europe to the Americas to the Far East – and explores imaginary locations too, where music is an unbreakable bond between symbolic landscapes, emotions, and spaces bubbling over with life and memory. Once again, MITO SettembreMusica, headed by president Anna Gastel and artistic director Nicola Campogrande, fills northern Italy’s two major urban hubs with music – culture for all of us to share.

A big hit with fans at previous editions, we’re glad to be bringing back our introductory listening guides – featuring music experts Gaia Varon and Luigi Marzola in Milano, and Stefano Catucci and Carlo Pavese in Torino – which provide audiences with information and insight for an enhanced listening experience. MITO SettembreMusica opens in Milano on Tuesday evening, September 3, at La Scala, and in Torino on Wednesday evening, September 4, at Teatro Regio. The opening program features the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, with Martha Argerich on piano. The concert, entitled Worlds, introduces the festival’s theme with a juxtaposition of two different universes of sound: Beethoven’s Concerto No. 2 for piano and orchestra – monolithic musical architecture that follows the strictest logic – and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique – which through the composer’s orchestration conceals an autobiographical episode.

Milan: The green city

Health and quality of life in the city depend on the adequate presence of green areas. Milan’s green network of parks includes 54 parks scattered over an area of approximately 14,681,400m2, as well as other green spaces. This includes 21 splendid gardens, that encourage locals and visitors to pass their free time surrounded by nature. Milanese cascine (farmsteads) represent oases of peace and reflection and are precious testimony to the values of a foregone farming culture.
