DENTRO CARAVAGGIO “What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting.” André Berne-Joffroy, one of the prime movers in the rediscovery of Caravaggio in the last century.

Milan is paying tribute anew to the great master with the exhibition Dentro Caravaggio (Inside Caravaggio), which will be held, once again, at Palazzo Reale from 29 September 2017, and feature 18 masterworks by Caravaggio displayed together for the very first time. The show is unique not only because it will present to the public works from the leading Italian museums and equally important museums abroad, but also because Caravaggio’s canvases will be flanked by their respective X-radiographic images for the first time. This will enable visitors to follow and discover, through the innovative use of multimedia technologies, the artist’s creative process from the initial idea to the finished work.

CARAVAGGIO - San Francesco in estasi

22 | December 2017 - January 2018

The exhibition is promoted and produced by the Milan City Council – Culture, Palazzo Reale and MondoMostre Skira, in association with the MIBACT – Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. The Gruppo Bracco is the exhibition Partner for the new investigative diagnostics. The exhibition is designed by Studio Cerri & Associati. The show is curated by Rossella Vodret, assisted by a prestigious scientific committee chaired by Keith Christiansen. The aim is to offer a new take on Caravaggio’s extraordinary artistic production over the years, through two principal interpretative keys: the diagnostic investigations and new documentary research that have led to a reassessment of the chronology of Caravaggio’s early works. This was made possible, in fact, by the new data yielded by the documents and also the results of the scientific analyses – for years the new frontier of research for art history as well as restoration. Concierge Tip Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was an important Italian artist and was born in Milan on 29 September 1571. In just under 15 years – he died in 1610 after a stormy life that ended tragically – he completely revolutionized painting technique through his naturalistic subjects, realistic settings and highlyindividual use of light and shade.

The Farm The body of the building that once housed the cells of the nuns and the meeting rooms has two storeys overlooking the courtyard and three storeys (including the basement) overlooking the valley. The wall overlooking the courtyard has a portico with three arches that were filled in during the farming period to create new living areas but restored during restoration work in 1977. Its function was to offer a covered place where pilgrims or other travellers could rest since Torba, like almost all Benedectine monasteries, offered hospitality. The Keep The keep (V-VI century) is an example of military architecture of unique importance. The buttresses and masonry walls become increasingly slender towards the top and reflect in architectural forms the diminishing loads sustained by the structures. The apertures in the lower section are arrow slits, while the second floor, on the other hand, has fine mushroom-shaped windows (the base arch is wider than the span of the window itself). A decorative terracotta band higher up marks the original height of the tower, before the additional storey was built.

The multisensory atmosphere of the 150mq Boutique in Milano, Via Gesù 1, on the corner of Via Montenapoleone, reminds of a luxurious Italian house. The architectural elements of the noble buildings of Parma are echoed by the almost theatrical atmosphere through a modern reinterpretation of history and art. Each detail expresses the Italian craftsmanship: from the floor in marble of Calacatta to the niches with precious mosaics, from the plasters to the elegant furniture, from the sofa chairs by Poltrona Frau to the paintings by Soraman. The shelves and the handle of the doorway are inspired by the Art Déco design of Colonia’s cap.

Gift Ideas Richard Ginori Collections

Labirinto Collection Sleek and rational: a logical path of lines evokes the image of a maze and creates a graphic frame that distinguishes the Labirinto Collection. The perfect convergence between ancient culture and the modern design of which Gio Ponti was one of the leading representatives, the collection was inspired by the pattern created by the master in 1926. The Impero shape, with its cylindrical outlines, evokes similar models from the late eighteenth century, imprinted by the lines of Neoclassical elegance, and it enhances the style and simplicity of the Labirinto Collection. The collection features a complete array of tableware as well as tea and coffee sets.

Oriente Italiano Collection Exuberant, exotic, enticing. A stylized flower, known as the “garofano” — carnation — in the tradition of Florentine ceramics and reinterpreted by Gio Ponti in 1946, evokes distant memories in the Oriente Italiano Collection. The graceful, delicate hues of dawn and dusk glisten on porcelain like a symphony. This is the scenario of the Oriente Italiano Collection on the Antico Doccia shape, where the airbrush technique and the inventiveness of colour converge to create a magnificent pattern. A beautiful palette creates richly balanced compositions: blue on a background of light blue, yellow, green or pink; black against ice or green; burgundy on pink; white on light blue; and rose on light pink. The collection comes in a complete array of tableware as well as tea and coffee sets.

And for special occasions….. Volière Collection Pure beauty and natural charm characterize Volière, the new Richard Ginori collection that epitomizes the masterful craftsmanship and artistic heritage of the Manifattura. The collection’s designs, featured on the signature Empire shape, are inspired by XIX century botany illustrations on botany, skillfully reproducing twelve graphic depictions of various species of birds perched on intricate festoons. The images are framed by floral motifs delicately highlighted by Richard Ginori’s specially formulated pure gold edging. Each figure is split up into different elements and colors, reproducing every hue, detail and colorful marking with a palette of more than fifty shades. The over glaze, applied using a special firing process, protects the pigments’ sheen. The Volière collection, which expresses Richard Ginori’s savoir-faire and craftsmanship, is available in a complete assortment of tableware, tea and coffee settings.

What are the most requested interventions in Italy? The most requested surgery is still breast augmentation (breast enlargement), followed by liposculpture and facial rejuvenation such as lifting and blepharoplasty. In recent years there has been a great increase in gluteoplasty, which in Brazil has already been widespread for several years.

What do you think has changed in recent years? You are more aware of the use of biocompatible material and, above all, the operating techniques have changed. For example, in the past lifting was done by traction only on the skin, without involving the facial muscles, as is the case today. The result is much more natural and lasting over time. Silicone prostheses today are also textured and much more durable and safe.

THE DUOMO’S GIFT The beauty is in the gesture: “Get your Spire” and help the Duomo’s restoration.

70 | December 2017 - January 2018

The fundraising campaign “Get your Spire. Carve your name in history” began in October 2012 with the aim of supporting the Duomo’s restoration and its 135 Spires, actively involving all citizens – both private, companies and associations - to safeguard the Cathedral. The precious Candoglia marble, of which the entire Cathedral has been built, is a very fragile and delicate stone, also prone to degradation for natural reasons: this is why the Veneranda Fabbrica is in need of constant and periodic restoration works. The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, the historic institution established in 1387 for the Cathedral’s planning and construction, has been involved for over six hundred years in the Duomo’s conservation and art restoration, a promise made possible through the many generous donations arrived particularly in the last five years. At this time there are eighteen restoration sites on the Duomo, many of which dedicated to the restoration of the spires, which are among the most fragile elements in this gothic Cathedral, requiring constant care and complex support building to make safe. Anyone’s birthday, or anniversary, a special occasion, a unique gift for the coming festivities? Your gesture could be transformed into a very special occasion to give a present to those you love: Get your Spire.

Lucio Fontana. “Ambienti/Environments” Fontana’s “Spatial Environments” are considered the most innovative outcome of the theories about space that Lucio Fontana first expressed in his Manifiesto Blanco of 1946. Here and in later manifestos, he described a new form of visual representation linked to space and time, which would move past the classic materials of sculpture and painting and employ modern technology to create “artificial forms, rainbows of wonder, words written in light” (Lucio Fontana, Spaziali, 1947 in Lucio Fontana, Manifesti scritti interviste, edited by Angela Sanna, Milan, 2015). Within a low-light setting, the exhibition presents a series Fontana’s Spatial Environments, independent rooms specifically designed by the artist. This layout, a new and unusual one for Pirelli HangarBicocca’s vast Navate space, allows the public to discover the installations one at a time. As visitors move through and linger within them, they gain a full sense of their groundbreaking significance: the amazing iconic and aesthetic power that makes these works so innovative even today.

Lucio Fontana’s Biography Lucio Fontana (Rosario, Argentina 1899 – Varese, Italy 1968) is internationally recognized as one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century and his work, a major influence for the subsequent generations of artists, resonates still today for its originality. Fontana dedicated his entire career to investigating the concepts of space, light, the void and the cosmos through the use of the most varied materials amongst which ceramic, plaster, cement and paint. He extended the boundaries of art through an awareness of new technology, such as neon and UV light, and new media such as television. In order to introduce these avant-garde concepts, Fontana wrote several manifestos in which he defined his artistic research in terms of spatial movement, known in Italian as Spazialismo, which he founded in Italy in 1947.

The New Life of the

O G R

From handling trains to handling new ideas, innovation and creativity. The OGR is one of the most important examples of 19th century industrial architecture in Turin . From the 1990s of the 20th century it had engaged in the maintenance of railway vehicles, and covered an area of 35,00 sq.m. Restored thanks to the commitment and funds of the Fondazione CRT, the new OGR host exhibitions, shows, concerts, theater and dance events, workshop, start-ups, and virtual realities. It is a unique European model of industrial reconversion that makes artistic research coexist with technological research: the workshop of culture, ideas and innovation. Situated between the train stations of Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, the Officine Grandi Riparazioni opened in 1895: their 190,000 square metres and 2,000 employees make them the largest industrial facility in town.

82 | December 2017 - January 2018

PARTICIPATION

For over a hundred years the OGR, an imposing late XIX century industrial complex drove the town’s growth. Abandonment and dereliction ensuing the early 1990s closure, led to their planned demolition, luckily averted. In 2013 Fondazione CRT purchased the 20,000 sq.m. H-shaped building, the offices and the yards and, through Società OGR-CRT, their redevelopment began. The OGR is composed of three environments, each with his nature: Officine Nord, Officine Sud , Snodo. Snodo is the room for taste open from breakfast to after-dinner with several ambience. Officine Nord is the space for concerts, exhibitions, performances, ballet, shows. Officine Sud is a hub for collaborative creativity and a new ideas incubator focused on start-ups, creative industries and smart data. One thousand days were required to return them to Turin, converted into a new heart beating on creativity, culture and shows, projected towards the world. One hundred million euros invested by Fondazione CRT to bring back to life the OGR, the “cathedral” of Turin’s industrial history. Hi-tech solutions, environmental sustainability, historical preservation, versatility of spaces and accessibility for all: these were the specifications behind the radical refurbishment and conversion of the OGR: from former train repairs Workshops to new Workshops for contemporary culture, innovation and business acceleration, with a marked international stance. (THIS MONTH) Each month Ogr has a full calendar of events and concerts. This month Until 14 January 2018 is possible to

Revolution in youth identity In April 1966 Time magazine dubbed London ‘The Swinging City’, reflecting its dramatic rise to the centre of world attention. A huge upheaval was taking place in British social and artistic morals. The thriving fashion and cultural scene of ‘Swinging London’ in the ’60s centred on the rise of clothing boutiques such as Bazaar on the King’s Road and Biba on Carnaby Street, which offered colourful new designs for the younger generation.

Revolution in the head Mind-enhancement through the use of drugs formed the basis for new creative experimentation in music, art, film and literature. Based on the philosophy of the Beat Generation, drugs, music, and exotic religions drove the underground movement of the late 1960s. Psychedelic clubs, such as the Roundhouse and UFO Club in London combined music with light shows, avant-garde cinema, and dance troupes. This in turn inspired a new vibrancy in artwork and design. This spirit of experimentation was shared by bands who used new technologies and sounds.

Revolution in the street In the 1960s, politics and the fight against the establishment was taken to the streets. In May 1968, the French Government nearly fell due to a massive strike by students and workers, and unrest spread across Europe. People around the world opposed the war in Vietnam. The 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York were a turning point for gay rights’ activists, and women’s liberation groups demonstrated to demand equality. The Black Panthers argued for armed protection as the civil rights struggle evolved into new campaigns about inner city poverty.

Revolution in consuming The rapid increase in personal wealth and arrival of the credit card fed the expansion of consumerism which was increasingly linked to patriotism. The 1967 Montreal and 1970 Osaka World Expos offered visions of a consumer future and welcomed tens of millions of visitors to a vast showcase of mass design and technology products. The rise in television ownership brought real time news coverage of the Vietnam War and the moon landings into people’s homes. The Expos and moon landings might be seen as proponents of a ‘modernist view’, yet the end of the decade saw a parallel growing disillusionment with modernism amongst the young which motivated an increased political engagement.

Revolution in living As contrast to the consumer culture found in cities, record-breaking crowds gathered together to listen to music at outdoor festivals in parks and often in the countryside. This was driven by the utopian vision of living as part of a community, in nature. This section explores the permissive, libertarian hippy and festival culture of the 1960s which was a complete contrast to the conservative living of the post-war years. One of the most famous of these was the three-day Woodstock Festival ‘of peace and music’ in 1969. Iconic Woodstock performances are now considered integral to the inventive counterculture and political thought of the ’60s, such as Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and Country Joe and the Fish’s anti-Vietnam War statement ‘I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixing-To-Die-Rag’. Turism has been at the core of Macugnaga economy since after the discovery of gold, when Macugnaga and the valley became an important commercial centre and families from the rich cities in Lombardy and Piedmont started to build mansion and spend summers escaping from the heath and winters skiing. For mountain lovers there is everything: trekking, skiing, climbing, vertical trekking, but simple walks can also be enjoyed ad history can be discovered with a visit to the ancient Tiglio, a 13th century tree, that was the centre of political activity. The valley remains a hidden gem, at the tourism is limited to people that love high mountain experience and genuine products.

Other works exhibited have references to the history of the graphic arts, such as clichés verres, a 19th-century technique in which the photographic negative is handworked and engraved. This represents a sort of reflection on the work of patient “calligraphers” creating one-off motifs. From the 1950s to the ‘70s, Nino Migliori dedicated a lot of energy to what is now, one of his most famous and best-loved projects: the documentation of walls in Italian cities. Motifs left on anonymous walls are capable of defining an awareness, or are just a declaration of existence. The human figure has disappeared: in the images, just gestures and fragments of words remain, enough to evoke stories, love, irony, anger and passion. The exhibition is completed by some realistic images made during the 1950s, when Nino Migliori’s with strong capture abil-ity is reporting the pain of Italy, a country that had lost everything during the war but had retained hope and dignity. The absolute icon of that unforgettable period is “The Diver”, now a legendary photograph, taken in 1951, a figure immortalized by Migliori on Rimini’s jetty. The show will be accompanied by a publication with a text by Michele Bonuomo and it will be open to the public until Sat-urday 27 January 2018.

The atmosphere that one breathes in the Christmas festive period in Milan is unique. In the air there are ancient and modern fragrances that stimulate the senses to seek a peaceful oasis of silence between the frenetic rush for presents and dazzling shop windows. It is rewarding to discover that here Christmas shopping is important but not all that Milan has to offer. The Milanese open their hearts to all and there is no need to stray far from the Duomo to discover the route of the traditions that remind us of the significance of traditional Christmas present giving.
