Africa’s Westerness and Africanism T h e Pav i l ion f or Con t e m p or a ry A rt i s t h e f o c u s of di s c u s s ion on a rt i n M i l a n
A dialogue of the uttermost importance in Milan, both cultural, social, and political. Africa is an exhibition held at PAC, the Pavilion for Contemporary Art, and it will investigate today’s African Art. One of the first examples in Italy of an exhibition space fully dedicated to contemporary art, PAC has been since 1979 the focus of discussion on the art scene in Milan, casting a brilliant glance towards the future. The show will display until September 17th the status of African art. The relationship between the continent’s art and its Westerness and Africanism. Thirty-two artists are invited to bring political, gender, and economical issues on the influences of the sorrounding world and the future of this continent. Will Africa ever be independent from the West or the first world countries? 14 | June - July 2017

The objective is to spread light on Keith Haring’s relationship with different artistic languages. About 110 works, many of them of monumental size or never seen before in Italy, will be on display until June 18th. The New York based artist was a symbol of street art and counter culture in the U.S of the 1980s. Having redesigned New York’s subway and having fought for civil rights, nucelar weapons, HIV virus discrimination, and against racism, his

goal was to create a new art language that was rooted into tradition. The American artist works are juxtaposed with those of authors from different periods and who influenced his artistic evolution: classical art, tribal, ethnographic, Gothic and cartoonist art, together with Pre-Columbian art and the use of computer graphics, and again Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee and Italian Reinassance.

How to get there: It’s easy enough. Palazzo Reale is located on Piazza Duomo, just on the side of the Cathedral. Take the subway line 1 or 2 and stop at DUOMO station. What to eat: We must say it’s a must. If you happen to be in this area of the city make sure you stop by Luini and try their legendary “panzerotto”: pizza dough stuffed with tomato, cheese, and ham. The Milanese go crazy for it and you can pick your own one within a wide menù. Shopping: La Rinascente is something you will want to visit if in the area. This huge department store was one of the first of its kind in the world. Enjoy some shopping choosing from several Italian and international luxury brands and then climb to the top floor and enjoy the view of the cathedral.

Visit: It’s a hidden jem but it’s worth a visit. Enter the church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro and explore Italian XVth century painter Bramante’s work of art on perspective. Stroll around the area: Walk from Piazza Duomo south on Via Torino, one of the most famous shopping arterias of the city. Turn left and you will find yourself on Piazza Sant’Alessandro. Mudec, the Museum of Anthropology of Milan designed by David Chipperfield, exhibits an original site-specific exhibition based around Wassily Kandinsky’s relationship between art and science and on the metaphor of travel as cognitive adventure. The Russian painter visual imagery is deeply rooted in Russia’s tradition:

his images and his path towards abstraction originated from his motherland’s fables, icons of saints, from lubki (popular prints), Saint George and the Dragon’s religious iconography, and music. This project is bounded to the intimate vocation of Mudec as an anthropology museum and takes place on the centenary of Russia’s Revolution.

They have a beautiful dehor with a garden. This is a very Milanese restaurant, worth a try. Artichokes are delicious.

Shopping: There are a lot of little independent boutiques both on Via Tortona and Via Savona, the two main arterias of the area around Mudec. Independent design and fashion shops rule the area here. Explore the goldworking whorkshop of Scuola Sant’Ambrogio, students prepare their own jewels with a lot of creativity. Visit: Enter the spaces of Via Tortona Superstudio. This is the Mecca for design lovers. During Milan’s Design Week it hosts the legendary Super Design Show.

WONDER Vincenzo Agnetti was one of the most famous Italian conceptual artists. Palazzo Reale will host an exhibition dedicated to his work until September 2017. He started his work as a poet, and then widened his range to visual arts, criticism, and writing. He was one of the most fascinating personalities for the Milanese panorama after World War II. He collaborated with
the Azimut group together with Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, and Agostino Bonalumi. He truly was the maximum expression of this kind of art and was famous for his written axioms on “felts” and “bakelites” and he related artistic concepts in a very personal way that also included acting and performance.

You access through a massive hall of fame-like Neo-Medieval entrance building made of marble. The Cimitero Monumentale is one of the largest cemeteries in Milan and for sure the most beautiful one, exhibiting a great number of artistic tombs and monuments. The Hall of Fame Some of the most influential men and women of the Milanese artistic and industrial scene are buried here, in the shade of cypresses and few steps away from the city center: architect Luca Beltrami, painter Francesco Hayez, pianist Vladimir Horowitz,

author Alessandro Manzoni, comedian Giorgio Gaber, artists Bruno Munari and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, conductor and cellist Arturo Toscanini, and Nobel Prize Dario Fo’s wife and actress Franca Rame are just some of the names. An artistic challenge Since the day it opened, this place has been an opportunity for artists and architects to challange their artistic skills on funeral themes such as death and the concept of memory. Designed by architect Carlo Maciachini, this huge complex opened in 1866 and since then it has been filled with a wide
WONDER range of contemporary and classical sculptures, temples and works of art from several artists among whom Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Adolfo Wildt, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, and Giò Pomodoro. The cemetery has a special section for those who do not belong to the Catholic religion and a Jewish section, located east of the catholic one and with a separate entrance. There is a lot to explore in this hidden jewel of Milan and summer time, when the city burns with heat, is probably the best time to take a stroll in the shade of the Cimitero Monumentale tree-lined boulevards and alleys.

How to get there: The new M5 subway line stops just in front of the Cimitero Monumentale. You can also use tramway number 10 and stop at MONUMENTALE. What to eat: This is something you will hardly forget. If you are visiting the scultpures and tree-lined alleys of Cimitero Monumentale and happen to be hungry, walk to A’ Riccione Bistrot on Via Procaccini. This is one of the best restaurants for fish in Milan. The owner still picks his own catch every day at the market since ages. It’s delicious.

Shopping: Walk towards the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova District and enjoy the shops on Piazza Gae Aulenti. Choose some Japanese product at Muji, a book at La Feltrinelli, a pair of shoes at Nike Store or some beauty products at Sephora.
Visit: Explore what’s on at Fabbrica del Vapore: one of the liveliest cultural venues in Milan. Exhibitions, concerts, festival, or just farmers’ markets happen here during the week or on week-ends.

From May 24 to September 24 the Municipality of Milan, Palazzo Reale and la Rinascente organise an exhibition to celebrate one of the most important cultural institutions in the city. The close bond between la Rinascente department store and Palazzo Reale, being in the same district, highlight the importance of this area in the cultural and economic life of Milan. The exhibition is hosted inside the Appartamento del Principe, Palazzo Reale.
AN ICON OF MILAN The beginning It was 1917 and things were changing all around the globe. The war was ending and modernity was knocking at the door. La Rinascente, whose name was chosen by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio meaning “the reborn”, was the first Italian department store and, since then on, it made history. Through a wide and interesting selection of graphic works, design products, and historical photos, you will learn the way la Rinascente made history in costume tradition, comunication, and large scale retail. Since its beginnings, this store placed itself as a point of reference in these fields and became an experimental workshop for all those innovation that came from Europe at that time. It was the first time, following the example of French stores, that goods were placed on shelves with a fixed price. From then on the taste and the mythology of shopping started to change and the “Rinascente” method turned into a pillar of the “made in Italy” concept.
The exhibition The project is curated by Sandrina Bandera and Maria Canella. The concept and exhibition design are curated by OMA/AMO to celebrate The Rinascente’s 100 years. According to rankings, la Rinascente placed itself as the best department store in the world in 2016: an icon, a legend. Artists, architects, and graphic designers contributed during these 100 years to the beauty of this place from whose terrace you feel like touching the pinnacles of the Duomo. Fashion, furniture, design, and graphics
accompanied by short movies, poems, and writings by D’Annunzio, Gadda, Quasimodo, Zavattini, and Calvino will celebrate la Rinascente’s great history. Revolutionary ideas created by artists such as Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Kandinsky became the background on which la Rinascente artistic soul started to grow. A deep and thorough dialogue with arts was founded: artists such as Depero, Munari, Melotti, Fontana, Soldati, Ceroli, Rotella, Warhol, Pistoletto, and Manzoni are just some of the names on show at this exhibition. Communication The aim of the exhibition is to tell the story of la Rinascente and Milan: the way it became so crucial in a time, between XIXth and XXth centuries, when Milan played an international key role as a capitale for finance, publishing, comunication, fashion, and design. Tracing the history of Rinascente literally means bringing back into life the history of the city. As many people put it “la Rinascente is not only a commercial firm, but a cultural and experimental one also”. The show puts into light the role of this institution as an engine towards modernity and innovation. The history of la Rinascente dates back to 1865 and is deeply related to the birth of poster designing, cinema, new comunication methods, the golden years of 1950s graphic design, fashion, the revolution brought by prêt-à-porter, and the birth of design award Compasso d’oro. So enter Palazzo Reale and explore the history of Milan through this beautiful story.

STYLE Everybody knows it. Milan it’s one of the most important fashion capitals in the world with Paris, London, and New York. Probably the most important one. Everything here is about fashion and design, having a great tradition that dates back in history. From June 17th to June 20th the city is going to light up with Milan Moda Uomo: the fashion week for men that will present all the most important collections for Spring/Summer 2018. Legendary brands and independent ones will land in Milan and fill the city with shows, parties, dj sets, conferences, and much more. Explore what’s on, where you will want to be, and how everything started. The biggest events happen here.
Some crucial directions to get around It’s important to get started with some geographical directions. The city fills with events and shows, everywhere, that’s true. But let’s take a look at Milan and understand where big things will happen and where eveything started. First thing to know is the Quadrilatero della Moda, the Milanese headquarter for fashion. This area is located few steps away from the Duomo, the cathedral. It consists of four main streets (that’s what “quadrilatero” means, a four-sided area). Via Monte Napoleone, Via Manzoni, Via della Spiga, and Corso Venezia. This is undoubtedly the most fancy and elegant district of Milan. Something

The history of fashion shows started in the XIXth century, when firms used to hire models and make them walk in front of the upper class representatives serving teas and pastries in designers’ ateliers or borgeouise living rooms. Things changed drastically in 1943 when
journalist Eleanor Lambert invented in New York the first Press Week, inviting big audiences and journalists from all over the world. In the years, thanks to French designer paul Poiret and Titanic survivor Lucile Duff Gordon, these events started to be accompanied by music, dances, and shows. It was in the 1970s that Milan’s and Paris’ Fashion Week started. Ten years after it was the time for London. But the Golden Age of fashion weeks, as we know them today, was in the 1980s and 1990s: the times of top models and huge events. From then on fashion shows started to get bigger and bigger, with famous artists, fotographers, and set designers starting to work for these events as works of art.

The name comes from a painting by Metaphysical School artist Giorgio de Chirico: The Misterious Baths. The work of art was painted in the 1930s and Andreé Ruth Shammah, director of Theatre Franco Parenti, decided to give this name to her new project: an open air public pool, probably one of the most beautiful and interesting venues in Milan.

WELL-BEING The Sempione Park is enclosed by three monuments belonging to very different times in history: the Sforza Castle (1400), the Peace Arch (1800), and the Triennale Palace of Arts (1900). It is a big park right into the center of the city, and it was established in 1888 with an overall area of 95 acres. Its name comes from Corso Sempione, a adjacent huge thouroghfare of Napoleonic Era that led to the Sempione Pass. Inside the
park are the Arena Civica, the public acquarium, the Branca Tower, and the former X Triennal Pavilion of 1954, today converted into a public library sorrounded by trees. The alleys and fields of the park host permanent sculptures by Arman, Giorgio de Chirico, and Francesco Barzaghi, while in the middle between the Castle and the Arch is an open air theatre by Italian land-art artist of the 1970s Alberto Burri.

Together with the Duomo, the cathedral, it’s considered the symbol of Milan. The relation of the Milanese with it can be ambiguous: some hate it, some love it. However, the Sforza Castle is the beating heart of the city. Only after the unification of Italy and its conversion to a cultural centre did the castle truly become dear to the hearts of the Milanese and as such, a symbol of the city.

The history The building of this huge fortress started in the XIVth century under the rule of the Visconti family. Around 1450 the new ruler of Milan, Francesco Sforza, who gave the name to the castle, set to work building additions to the Visconti Castle. The works were carried by Florentine architect Antonio Averulino, known as il Filarete,
WELL-BEING who designed the façade and the high central tower. It was in the time of Ludovico il Moro that the castle knew its most prolific time, with artists such as Donato Bramante, Bramantino, and Leonardo da Vinci decorating it. In 1893 that a huge project of restoration began under the Milanese architect Luca Beltrami, bringing to light
painted decorations of Leonardo’s Sala delle Asse and the Treasure Room and reconstructing the façade and the Filarete tower.The new Filarete tower was dedicated to King Umberto I and inaugurated in a solemn ceremony on 24th September 1905. It marked the opening of a new chapter in the history of the castle.

The Ponticella was built by Duke of Milan Ludovico il Moro. It is said that the building was designed by Bramante, the artist that brought Renaissance from Tuscany to Lombardy and that it was then decorated by Leonardo da Vinci. The Duke took refuge here when mourning the death of his beloved young wife, Beatrice d’Este and since then on the bridge’s rooms became known as Black Rooms.
A symbol of a half moon decorates the facade facing the Ducal Courtyard; this is because it recalls the last name of Milan’s Spanish governon at the time, Alvaro de Luna. The Rocchetta looks like a fortress within a foretress and, for a short period, it used to be the refuge of Bona di Savoia, Duchess of Milan and second spuse of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza.

Accessing from the Filarete Tower you enter the Castle’s Courtyard of Arms, where military parades where held. Today you can see evidences of Milan’s history from different historical times: a late Roman sarcophagus, fragments of statues, and the marble statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The courtyard was extensively restored by Milanese architect Luca Beltrami.
Having been the residence of Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza, this courtyard marks the beginning of the ducal apartments. You access it thorugh the Portico of the Elephant, so called because of a still visible fresco depicting a huge elephant. On the adjacent wall you can still spot a fragment of a paw, most probably once portraying a lion.

The “ravelins” were protective fortifications. Their construction began under Francesco Sforza, possibly on the remains of the Visconti period. The art collection of the Sforzesco Castle was born thanks to the generosity of rich Milanese citizens. Since the early 1900s’ the collection grew acquiring many masterpieces such as Canaletto’s landscapes, works by Correggio, Titian, Tintoretto, Bronzino, the Madonna of the Book by Vincenzo Foppa and the beautiful Madonna Enthroned Between Saints by Andrea Mantegna.
The Sala delle Asse is the most iconic room in the Castle and it was painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The paintings on the wooden walls were restored in 1902, when Ernesto Rusca brought the colours back to life. Unfortunately visits to Sala delle Asse will be unavailable until 2019 for further works of restoration. However, visitors can still transit in the room.

It was designed by architect Giovanni Muzio in 1935, thanks to a rich donation by senator Antonio Bernocchi who wanted to house the “Triennali”, also known as International Exhibitions of Decorative and Industrial Arts and Architecture. Palazzo dell’Arte is an example of Rationalism in architecture. Today it hosts offices, huge exhibition spaces for temporary shows, a Design Museum, an Art Library that overlooks the park, a theatre that can host 1200 people, a restaurant, a cafè, and some atelier that artists can rent. Moreover, the building also hosts a legendary club and restaurant, that opened in 1971, known as Old Fashion Cafè.

The museum also houses a Permanent Collection, a collection of objects of Italian design that have been or are crucial to its history. The museum has been the venue for La Triennale di Milano. Recognized by the Bureau of International Expositions, this major exhibition has been held thirteen times so far, the latest one in 1996, and the next scheduled for 2017.

Since 2011 the Triennale hosts the Teatro dell’Arte, one of the most important venues for experimental theatre and performing arts in the Milanese art scene. It was projected by Giovanni Muzio and it is located underground. The aim is to promote and host experimental conferences, videos, theatre plays, and art performances that cast a brilliant and innovative glance on the future of arts.

It is well known world-wide. Milan is the capital of design. Every year, every April to be more specific, the city hosts the legendary Design Week, where designers and architects from all over the worl gather in Milan to visit and exhibit their ultimate and up to date projects and ideas. The Triennale Design Museum is the most important design museum in Italy and one of the most relevant in the world. It is located in the inside of Palazzo dell’Arte and it opened in 2007, having being designed by Italian

architect Michele de Lucchi. The aim of the museum is to show, preserve, explain, and promote Italian design in the world. But what is so particular and interesting about this museum? The Mysterious Baths Fountains was placed in 1973 in the park during Milan’s XV Triennale of Art and was designed by Italian metaphysical artist Giorgio de Chirico: it is considered one of his greatest sculptures. A large pool hosts seven Vincenza marble statues. A surreal giant swan overlooks two men bathing. The inside is painted in yellow ochre, while the inside of the

pool recalls parquet zig-zag motifs, to suggest the movement of waves. The original scultpures of the two swimmers and the fish were moved after restoration to the Museum of the Twentieth Century. Take a stroll in the park and stop by this surreal beautiful scultpure. It is a must visit.

The story of the Civic Aquarium of Milan started in 1906, when Milan hosted an International Exhibition to celebrate the opening of the Sempione tunnel in the Alps and it is the third most antique aquarium in Europe. it is located in a beautiful Liberty (Art Noveau) building, with charming decorations and majolicas on the outside, and inside the Sempione Park. The elliptic shape hints to the similar form of the closeby Arena Civica. It
was restored between 2003 and 2006. The facade is adorned with a statue of Neptune, the Greek god of the seas, and a hippopotamus fountain. The inside is structured in order to give a panoramic view of water in all its forms: from the evaporation of clouds, to mountain streams, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Fish such as starfish, sturgeons, and the environment of the coral reef are preserved in its tanks.

Fang Zhaolin’s China on exhibition in Milan Mor e t h a n 6 0 wor k s of a rt on di s p l ay
Museo della Permanente (Milan), in cooperation with Xuyuan Museum (Beijing), hosts from June 15th to September 10th the first great retrospective exhibition in Italy dedicated to the Chinese artist Fang Zhaolin, born in Wuxi in Jiangsu Province in 1914 and deceased in Hong Kong in 2006, aged 93. The exhibition Fang Zhaolin. Signora del Celeste Impero, sponsored by the Municipality of Milan, and curated by Daniel Sluse and Jean Toschi Marazzani Visconti, retraces through 66 works - all created on rice paper with a brush dipped in black ink or colored pigments - the entire evolution of Fang Zhaolin as a painter, heir to the Chinese artistic tradition but able to develop a style reflecting the modern spirit of her times. The daughter of industrialist Fang Shouyi, murdered in 1925 when she was only eleven years old, and mother of eight children, whom she brought up alone after the untimely demise of her husband, Fang Zhaolin is considered today one of the prominent figures of Chinese painting in the 20th century, with an ability to build a bridge between Chinese and Western art in her paintings.
Where East meets West A disciple of the greatest Chinese masters, Fang Zhaolin had the chance to travel during many years through Asia, Europe, and the United States. Daniel Sluse writes in his introduction for the exhibition catalogue: “A tireless traveler, constantly looking for her roots, she would meet modern art, which would take her to a greater understanding of her own culture”. Fang Zhaolin developed a deep knowledge of Western history, Classicism, Pre- and Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. Nonetheless, it is China that all her work is centered on. A China
made of majestic landscapes, peopled by intense life that animates her memory and springs from her brushes. Fang Zhaolin integrated in her works visual elements and artistic techniques drawn from Western Modernism (Pollock, Kline, Kandinsky...) and applied them to Chinese landscape painting, introducing notable new features in the use of brushes, composition, and color. But Fang Zhaolin’s innovation resides not only in her choice of contrasting colors, in abstract geometric shapes or in flattened surfaces, but also in her ability to create a musical rhythm through free, forceful brush-strokes, constantly alternating between light
and thick inks: her extraordinary and highly personal ability to integrate traditional Chinese calligraphy in painting represents the crucial feature of Fang Zhaolin’s paintings Chineseness. A unique calligraphy style that, from neat and steady, was transformed since 1960 by an evolution inspired by roughness and primitivism, marked by unpredictable lines, light and heavy, wet and dry. The harmonious intertwining of calligraphy and painting was Fang Zhaolin’s main instrument to explore the essence of Chinese art and to express her own emotions.

A paradise in the Mediterranea sea Portofino National Park is the northernmost park in western Mediterrenean. You will be charmed by chestnut trees forests, huge rocks towering on top of the deep blue sea, and olive trees groves that grow on the red, arid soil of the Mediterranean countries. The atmosphere fills with the perfumes of rosemary, basil, resine, maritime pine trees, and tamarisks. More than 80 of paths run

in the territory, giving the opportunity to visitors to spend a day, or more, trekking or just strolling around. You can either decide to hike all the way from Portofino to Camogli or just take the ferry and hop off in the most enchanting spots. Camogli would be the starting point. ENERGY The walk The path continues on the coastline, hundred meters above sea level. It’s pretty hard, so do not understimate it. Or just take the ferry. You will walk sorrounded by nature, just wild goats, olive trees, and the bright, clear blue Mediterranean sea with its pristine bays and beaches. The entire area is protected. This area is known for dolphins, and that is where the name Portofino comes from: Port Dolphin, from ancient Latin. So if you are lucky, you might see some jumping in the waves. Halfway through, you will find the San Fruttuoso Abbey: probably one of the most stunning examples of religious architecture in Italy. You can only reach it by feet or by ferry: no roads. The Abbey lays on the beach and inside it guards the relics
of Saint Fruttuoso, a catholic patron from Catalonia. The huge monastery was built in Xth century and then parts where added until 1562. Visit the abbey, have lunch in one of the three or four restaurants facing the sea, and then dive and swim around enjoying the sight of huge olive trees and the bell tower. The water is so clear and clean, you will not believe it. Fifteen meters under the sea level, just snorkel there or dive, is the Christ of the Abyss: a huge statue of Christ, his arms wide open, as if blessing the sea around him. Stop in Portofino, no need to explain much about this legendary and elegant village where movies where shot and where, after a delicious ice cream, you can shop around in expensive boutiques for high end brands or artisan products.

How to get there: Take the train to Camogli from Milan’s Central Station and then the bus up to San Rocco. Its about two hours but it’s really worth it. Visit: Explore the Romanic abbey of San Fruttuoso and the statue of the Christ of the Abyss. This is one of the most precious architectonic jewels of Italy preserved by FAI. Stroll around the area: Walk on piers of Portofino’s harbour and take a look at the expensive yachts and sailing boats docked here. You’ll might see celebrieties sunbathing.

Since more than one hundred years, Savini is a symbol of Milan. Three floors facing elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Legendary historical figures dined in this restaurant’s halls throughout history. A charming story with Milan In 1867 Milan inaugurates Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, a gallery built in Neo-Renaissance style and one of the most iconic examples of iron commercial architecture of the XIXth century. Since the beginning this corner of the city turns into a gathering venue for the Milanese bourgeoisie. People start to meet here at restaurants, cafès, and boutiques and the Galleria became known as “Milan’s salon”. It is in this atmosphere that Savini is founded. It firstly opened as a brewery, being acquired after a while by Virgilio Savini and turned into a beautiful and elegant restaurant. Artists and intellectuals choose this place as their meeting point. In XIXth century, Milan was a crucial venue for arts and music. 320 gr. Carnaroli rice 1,5 l fish broth 350 gr. cuttlefish 20 gr. Cuttlefish ink garlic

extra-virgin olive oil basil 2 red peppers 100 gr. sugar salt chili oil
TASTE Recipe: Prepare a sugar syrup with 100gr. of water and 100 gr. of sugar. Peal the peppers and dunk them in it. Leave it in infuse until cool. Drain them. Bring the syrup to the boil and dunk the peppers in again. Let it cool and repeat the same process twice. Blend the candied peppers and spread them on a greaseproof oiled paper. Put in the oven at 90°until it turns into a dried wafer. Let it cool and blend it to powder. Keep it in an airtight box avoiding moisture.
Clean the cuttlefish and marinate them with olive oil, basil, and a garlic clove. Cook the risotto and halfway through the cooking process add the cuttlefish ink. Add extra-virgin olive oil, chili oil, and julienne basil, and cook until creamy. Dice the cuttlefish and season it with oil and salt. Serve the risotto, add a cuttlefish quenelle and sprinkle with the candied peppers powder.

Through a selection of the most crucial photos taken by Italian architect Franco Albini, the exhibition “Glimpses of the world: Franco Albini the photographer” shows for the first time an unknown aspect of the artist. The Franco Albini Foundation keeps more than 6,000 photos and an entire section dedicated to Albini’s work as a photopgrapher. An exhibition curated by Marco Albini and Stefano Setti in collaboration with Franco Albini Foundation.
Preceded by a significant restoration, the exhibition presents a selection of the huge sculptural heritage of the galleria, mostly preserved in the depository of the museum and therefore unknown to the public. 100 years of the history of sculpture in Milan (1815-1915) are here well documented, from international Neoclassicism until late Symbolism.
Permanent Installation In 1996, following an invitation from Italian priest Giulio Greco, American artist Dan Flavin (New York, 1933-1996) created an artwork as the central element for the restoration and renewal of the Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa church in Milan, which was designed by Giovanni Muzio in the 1930s.
