Hi and Welcome to the 6th edition of My Gozo Magazine, your definitive guide to everything you need to know about Gozo. This is my 6th year producing the magazine and this has only been possible due to the continued support I receive from my wonderful sponsors and readers from across the globe who fill me with the encouragement, passion and desire to produce what I hope is an insightful and fun magazine to read. I also owe a debt of gratitude to The Maltese Tourism Association/MTA/ Visit Malta, Magro Brothers for their support, as well as all of the local sponsors who continue to support My Gozo Magazine, it is much appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the hotels/b+b’s/farmhouses/business’s on The Island who allow me to distribute the magazine. My Gozo started off as a 10 page guide for guests visiting our wedding on Gozo in 2010, many of whom had never visited the Island, I never imagined that I would be producing this magazine for a 6th consecutive year. If you spot a mistake or would like to offer me any advice, please feel free to get in contact. The aim of My Gozo is to showcase the beauty of Gozo but also to tell you about the wonderful places to visit, and to also highlight the fact that Gozo is very much a year round destination. It is no longer a surprise when we hear that celebrities are visiting Gozo, as we have all known for decades about it’s secret that keeps drawing us back year after year. In the 2017/18 edition we have all of the usual features, including, Events, Walk On The Wild Side, Postcards, Magic Moments, Weddings, Town/Village Guides, Sports and Adventure. We also have new features, including, Book Reviews and a Beach Guide. One of the most famous names on The Maltese Islands, Magro Brothers, is celebrating over 101 years in the food and agri business, in this edition we have a really good story about their Savina Brand. There has been real interest in property on the Island over the last couple of years, and the variety and standard of housing/apartments is truly outstanding. For an extensive selection of property, visit, www.move2gozo.com and speak to David and Fiona. 2017 was an extremely sad time for everyone on the Maltese Islands, and in particular Gozo as we said goodbye to an old friend, the iconic Azure Window which finally succombed to mother nature. My Gozo reader, Fiona Mackenzie-Spence shares her story. Faraxa Publishing, a local publishing house have some fantastic book titles under their managaement, all with a relevence to Gozo. I LOVE GOZO
Magic Moments...
Jackie Croft has been visiting Gozo since 2007 and now operates a B+B in The Village of Gharb with husband Mark. Jackie shares some of her secrets and tells us about her love of Gozo... Tell us a bit about yourself and where you come from, what do you do?
Meet The ...
My name is Jackie and I was born in Liverpool in England and I am a co-owner/operator of Ta' Matmura Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast in Gharb, with my husband Mark. How long have you been visiting Gozo? And what’s your association with the Island ? My husband and I have been visiting the Maltese islands since 2007, primarily for the scuba diving, which we both love, but also for the warmth of the people and of course the beautiful weather. What do you love about Gozo? The calm and peacefulness, you notice it as soon as you arrive on the ferry from Malta - after the hustle and bustle of Malta you find Gozo so relaxed, with a slower pace - just perfect. What 5 things should a tourist not miss? Only Five ! A visit to Dwejra Bay and Fungus Rock, Explore the Citadella, be amazed by the Ggantija temples in Xaghra, swim in the crystal clear waters at Mgarr ix-Xini or Wied il-Ghasri, enjoy lunch in one of the many fine restaurants overlooking the sea. Do you think there will ever be a tunnel between Gozo and Malta and are you in favour? We don't think so and really hope not as we feel either would spoil Gozo forever, it would allow too many cars
Adrian & His Late Mum at Mgarr Ix Xini in the 70’s onto the island and cause congestion and overcrowding and take away the uniqueness that is Gozo and why people, including the Maltese, love visiting Gozo . Although the Gozitans who work on Malta do need an alternative as the daily commute at present is far from ideal, perhaps a fast ferry service straight to Valletta or Sliema would be a better solution. For tourists visiting the island the ferry is part of the magic and allows you to relax ready to enjoy Gozo. What’s your favourite beach ? San Blas with its beautiful red sand and rocks, just wonderful. Where’s the best place to swim ? Mgarr ix-Xini or Wied il-Ghasri Any Gozo dishes we must try ? Oh yes, Bragioli and Rabbit or the wonderful fish and seafood on offer and of course a Gozitan Platter and the famous Pastizzi Whats your favourite time of the year to visit Gozo and why ?
Difficult as each season brings a different perspective, spring for the freshness, flowers and beautiful walks, Summer for those lazy days on the beach or by the pool or Autumn for the changing landscape and stormy seas - I think I would go for Spring just warm enough but not too hot and ideal for taking photos. Whats your favourite festa ? Oh that has to be Gharb. Where is your favourite Village square and why is it special ? That would have to be Xaghra with the cafe's and restaurants lining the square, with the church dominating everything, a lovely place to sit at lunch time or early evening for a meal with a glass of wine watching the world go by. A close second would be St. Georges Square in Victoria, for much the same reasons. Can you speak the local lingo ? Flit, mhux bizzejjed ( a little, not enough)

A Window No More! by Fiona Mackenzie-Spence
Gozo lost its most iconic view of nature on Wednesday 8th March, 2017, at 9:40 a.m in the complete destruction of the Azure Window at Dwejra. Everyone throughout the Maltese islands and all those who’ve known this particular spot, are grieving at the loss of a splendid sculpture created by the genius of Nature. There is no small part left behind in anything but memories now and what we see through recorded images. No more live vision and inevitable instinctive wonder. Of course the abstract (no doubt), final resting places of all that rock will provide a new landscape and habitat to an underwater world.
The loss now has been a shock for all of us, apart from those aware of the more serious problems with the fragility of the structure under the sea. Most of us never thought it would happen yet. With this diagnosis, as well as the crack in the bridge, it was made illegal to walk over the bridge, or indeed get too close to it, towards the end of last year. This was done with large signs and lots of media coverage and a hefty fine levied if the warning was ignored. Prior to October, tourists regularly walked up to and across the bridge that was the top of the window. I don’t think I could have ever done that myself, being terrified of heights, but I consider this quite a close call in stopping people just in time! If it had happened after a summer storm, without the ban being in place, a great many could have been on top of the window and no doubt would have died. We have to give thanks for that not being the case. Nature chose her moment well. I don’t believe the divers and geologists giving the “any day collapse” prognosis, probably imagined that day would be quite so soon, or so utterly complete in destruction. 20
Above the waterline it’s as if it never existed. Not even some lonely spike of the outer pillar to remind us of its former glory – nothing at all is also rather a shock. I would never have thought for a moment when I first set eyes on it in May, 2016 that I would not have the pleasure of looking at it ever again, less than a year later. I have been many times in the nine months of living here. The best time to visit was certainly in winter when everything is closed up. Days when there are no tourist stalls open, no buses. Early in the morning, with the stars starting to fade in the lightening dawn. Certainly the only time you might be lucky enough to be alone. Evening with the sun setting in the background, when the sea is as smooth as glass, then the jewel of the Azure Window was at its best. In the warm evenings, you would get quite a few people to watch the sunset. Everyone wished it could just be the arch and them. There were the spectacular stormy days when the wind whipped up the waves, which hurled themselves at the rocks, screaming with spray in the strength and power of the sea. An ancient sculpture with millions of days spent at the mercy of the wind and all the raging it brings, amongst days spent in calm contemplation peacefully at rest, for a little while. The inevitable interest and resulting economic development around the site, was perhaps no longer the cloak Mother Nature wished to wear. Large numbers of people visiting sites all over the
world, become an opportunity for the influence to spend. No country seems to be immune. People equals money being spent. Buses offer frequent visits all day. Several ice cream stands, a bus stop, with full facilities, stalls selling clothing, jewellery, food, woodwork and leather – a selection of licensed vendors on an agreed rota. Very good parking. A restaurant/café, boat hire in the inland sea, a smaller café, diving – a whole community of trade to provide for visitors to Dwejra and its landscape. There’s still Fungus Rock and the horseshoe shaped bay in which it sits at the mouth of, the Inland Sea, a little church, great walking all around the area and no doubt the vendors will remain. It was an icon around the World, high on the most photographed list. Because of its spectacular beauty and our desire to view it, we all spoiled it in a way. Who out of any of us would not have preferred to quietly come across it on a peaceful coastal walk, finding it without the cloak of commercialism the modern world demanded it wore? There are lots of other things to see here, but the Azure Window was a jewel in the art of nature and we all feel bereft of it. A very unfortunate loss for Malta as a country and heart wrenchingly sad for everyone sharing the Island of Gozo, which hosted its creation, vision and final transformation. Fiona Mackenzie-Spence ©

SAVINA - The Gift Of Good Taste!
flurry of activity greets locals and tourists alike as they enter the Savina Creativity Centre at the Magro Food Village in Xewkija. An aroma of pleasant scents stream out in gentle harmony from the candle-making workshop to welcome the daily guests. Excited murmurs break the silence as fascinated passers-by get to see and taste traditional Gozitan delights being lovingly prepared by in-house chefs. In a corner, a small crowd watches attentively as the lace-maker's fingers move hastily over pins and bobbins to create intricate lace patterns known locally as ‘’bizzila’’.
atmosphere is a far cry from what it was in days of old.
The hustle and bustle is reminiscent of Pjazza Savina in Victoria which used to be the centre of everyday trading in Gozo, at the turn of the 20th century. Today, the square is still nestled neatly underneath the shadows of the Citadella fortifications, in the very heart of Gozo's capital, but the
Today, Savina is a very well established local brand that continues to excel. Their product line can be found in most leading tourism hotspots across Malta and Gozo and also boast export markets in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, France and Japan where specific sales points and centers
The Pjazza Savina open market provided everything from fresh produce, cheeses and wines, to tools, crafts, fishing nets and woven attire. Magro Brothers, who are the creators and owners of Savina Creations, were already renowned provision merchants and their offices were set up right in the hub of this trade centre. TRAIL OF THE UNEXPECTED
A great way to explore the Island is by criss crossing the Island by foot. My Gozo has chosen THREE walks to help you explore the Island on two feet...
T
here is a lot more to Gozo than just the beach and a great way to explore the Island is by criss crossing it by foot. Even for the less advanced walkers amongst our readers, given the size of Gozo, 10 miles x 5 miles, there is plenty to see and explore off the beaten track. Pack your rucksack with plenty of water, some sun screen and a loaf of local bread (with some local tomatoes and cheese) and off you go to find ancient cart tracks, wild flowers and herbs, cultural sites and some stunning views. The advantage with walking on Gozo is that you will see such a diverse array of scenery in one day that you could only wish to accomplish in a week or two in other places. At My Gozo, we find that the best time of the year to explore Gozo is
between October and May, when the temperatures are friendlier on the foot and Gozo really does look fantastic during the Autumn, Winter and Spring months. Gozo springs into life with an outstanding array of flora, greenery and fresh smelling herbs. In this year’s magazine we will be focusing on three walking routes. Walk 1 - Nadur to Qala The first walk in this year’s magazine is an old favourite of ours, Nadur to Qala, taking in The Village of Nadur, The beautiful San Blas Bay, Dahlet Qorrot and Qala. What we like about this walk is that it takes in some of Gozo’s outstanding natural beauty, wild, untouched countryside and stunning coastal scenery. The route is about 9km and should take around 4.5 hours
to complete, we recommend bringing some swim wear to take advantage of San Blas Bays crystal clear waters. We would advise bringing something to eat and plenty of fluids as there are no cafes until you reach San Blas Bay. This walk begins in the Village of Nadur, which in Maltese translates as Look Out, no surprise given its strategic position, perched high on a hill overlooking Malta and much of Gozo. The population of Nadur is 5000 and throughout history it has played a very important role in the defence of the Island. Nadur is dominated by the Parish Church, The St Peter and Paul Basilica which was started in 1760. The Village feast is celebrated on the 29th June each year and in February it is home to a quite spectacular festival and is held on the 5 days preceding ash Wednesday. 24
Starting at the Village Church in the main square, take a left and follow the road out of the village and when you come to a bus stop named Hida, take the next right past the Mekren Bakery, (a family run bakery selling the most amazing fresh bread and wood fired Pizza and is over 100 years old) and continue along the road to the left and then first right along Triq Hanaq, following the signs to Ramla Bay. You will pass another bus stop called Hanaq where you should take in the beautiful view of the Ramla Valley and the Village of Xaghra on the left hand side. A few metres past the bus stop, take the next road on your right which is called Triq Wied Bingemma and follow for about 1.2km, you will be walking alongside fruit groves and fertile fields. When you arrive at a T-Junction next to a wastewater pumping station, take the path to the right
and follow until you can see a road which runs between some houses, walk between the houses and take the next road on the left that will bring you to a viewing area with some benches. Take the path that goes downhill for about 550 metres and this will bring you down to the secluded San Blas Bay where you can go for a refreshing swim or cool off with a drink in the beachside café. After a rest in San Blas Bay head back up the hill and at the top continue along Triq San Blas and take a left at the T-Junction and then first left. Follow Triq Wied Rihan and follow down to the coast where on the right you should be able to see Dahlet Qorrot and The fishing huts that adorn the bay. In front of you should be The Sopu Tower, built by The Knights of St John in 1667. To your right you should see a concrete path under the cliff on your right hand side, you will need to follow an earth path to join this path which will
then lead you down into Dahlet Qorrot, a small, rocky bay, used mainly by local fishermen. Follow the path around the bay and take the set if steps leading onto the yellow limestone rock. Walk for around 100 metres and take the earth path to the right, when you reach a small outbuilding the path will take a sharp right, follow this uphill until it becomes a wider concrete path and continue for about 1km, admiring the views along the way. When you arrive at a T-Junction, take the road to the left and follow until you come to a cross roads, continue straight ahead and follow the road all the way around until you reach Triq It Telgha, follow the road all the way down until you reach Qala Village Square which is home to the stunning Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception and St Joseph.
25
Walk 2 - Qala to Mgarr This wonderful walk takes in some stunning scenery of the Eastern coast of Gozo, Comino and the Northern coast of Malta. It starts in Qala which is home to circa 2,500 people and is a long established Gozitan village with a strong history. In Maltese, Qala means ‘’Sheltered Harbour’’ and it is Gozo‘s most Eastern village. Breathtaking scenes can be enjoyed, among other places, from the Qala Belvedere and from the small courtyard in front of the church known as II-Madonna tal-Blat (Saint Mary of the Rocks). Life in the Village centres around the Square and in particular The parish Church. Qala is lucky to have three Churches, one of which is The Qala Sanctuary, one of Islands most sacred churches. The Church was originally dedicated to The Assumption of Our Lady and the titular painting of the Assumption, which is now found at the St Josephs Parish Church is one of the most celebrated paintings on Gozo.
To start the walk, take the road to the right hand side of the Church and head uphill and at a Y junction take a right past the windmill that will be on your left hand side. The windmill was built in 1850’s and was named after its original owner, Randu. The windmill was in use until the 1960’s and was used for grinding maize. Follow Triq Il Wileg as it winds downhill until you reach a Y junction where you should take a left and follow the road down towards the coast until you reach a large quarry. Follow the path along the side of the quarry until it joins another path that leads south towards The Qala Battery, which is known locally as It-Trunciera and was built in 1732 to look over the Gozo channel.
The coastline around Qala is somewhat rugged but it has played it’s part in the history of Gozo. St Anthony’s Battery, known locally as It-Trunciera, was built in 1732 by The Knights of St John as a defensive fortress to deter any enemy landings on the Island.
Facing Comino take a right and follow the narrow path that runs along the coast inland and continue around over a small hill following the rocky path until you reach the ancient cart ruts and the remains of a megaglithican structure. Follow the cart ruts until you reach a rocky track where you should take a sharp right. Continue along the track as it winds to the left until you reach The Sanctuary of The Immaculate Conception, which was built in 1575 and is one of the oldest shrines on the Island and the original Parish Church of Qala.
The Knights were responsible for inventing an explosive device called the Fougasse, which comprised of explosive material being pressed into a hole in the ground, apparently there are two that survived, one facing Mgarr Harbour at Blata I-Bajda and the other at Gebla Tal-Halfa.
During the spring and early summer you should experience the smell and beauty of lilac flowers that are found along the route. Take the steep road downhill that leads to Hondoq Bay, a firm family favourite with locals and tourists alike. Just before you reach the bottom of the hill you
will pass a church known locally as Tal-Blit, The Chapel of Rocks which was built in 1770. The views of Comino, Cominotto and The Blue Lagoon should be pretty special at the point. On the beach and facing comino, take the path to your right that leads along the coast passing two rocky outcrops known locally as Crow Rock and Barn Owl Rock and follow the path all the way along the coast until you reach Mgarr. The path is easy to follow and will be a mixture of limestone rocks and dirt tracks, get the camera ready as you approach Mgarr because the view of the harbour and Fort Chambray is outstanding. On arriving in Mgarr you will pass a small sandy beach and arrive in the new marina where you will find two monuments, one dedicated to the The 1948 Ħondoqir-Rummien tragedy which claimed the lives of 16 people and the other to the many Gozitan migrants who have left these shores for The US, Australia and Canada to name a few over the years. Walk 3 - Mgarr to Xewkija This walk starts at the main entry point into Gozo, Mgarr Harbour, a bustling port that is busy both day and night. Although the harbour has been commercialised over the years it still retains a lot of its charm including The Gleneagles Bar, Luzzi fishing boats and horses being cooled down in the sea. As you approach Mgarr harbour on the Gozo Ferry, it sends a tingle down your spine, for holiday makers it’s a sense of coming home to an old friend that puts a big smile on your face.
The route begins beside the Seaview restaurant which is opposite the ferry terminal. Take the concrete path to the left of the restaurant and as it forks take the path to the right and then about half way up take the dirt path to your left and follow the meandering path, admiring Fort Chambray to your right. The Fort was built in 1788 and is named after the one of the last Great Knights of Malta, Norman Jacques De Chambray who paid for the construction of the fort through his own wealth. The Fort never really served any military purpose and fell into disrepair, although it has been redeveloped into luxury villas and apartments. As you follow the meandering path along the coast you will arrive at Xatt L’Ahmar, a secluded inlet which is extremely popular with local swimmers and divers and is home
to two scuttled ferry’s and is a very popular diving site. Continue to follow the path along the cliff edge, admiring the high Maltese cliffs on your left hand side, Ta’Cenc Cliffs in the distance until you reach Mgarr Ix Xini tower. Built in 1661 the tower was occupied by French troops during the Napoleonic invasion of 1798 and it has now been expertly restored to its previous glory. From the tower, take the path that heads inland and follow the creek down into Mgarr Ix Xini, as you pass by a private Villa look out for a path on your left that will lead you to the beach and take the steps that are cut into the rock! There is a very good restaurant where you can get a well-deserved bit to eat and refreshing drink. To get to the Village of Xewkija, the
final destination point for this walk, take the steep road out of Mgarr IX-Xini and follow for about 1.5km, turning to admire the views of Malta behind you and the valley on the right hand side, which include some wonderful caves, including Ghar Il-Qniepen (Cave of the Bells) named after the stagactites hanging from its roof. The Dome of the Xewkija Church will soon come into view and as you approach a cattle farm, carry on through and take the next right and then right again and follow the road all the way until you reach the square where you cannot fail to be blown away by the sheer beauty of the Church. Xewkija is the oldest Village in Gozo and is home to The Church of St John The Baptist. There are several bars in front of the Church where you can relax and take in its majestic splendor.

Ta’Gurdan Lighthouse Having the privilege of living on Gozo, I spend a lot of time during the winter, autumn and spring months rambling around the Island. One of our favourite walks is around the North West of the Island and in particular the area around Gharb towards the Ta’Gurdan Lighthouse. Watching the sun set in in the west is breath-taking and there is no better spot than perched up high overlooking the rich terrain below. The lighthouse was built in 1851 when the Maltese Islands were ruled by the British. It was constructed due to the large volume of maritime traffic that started arriving in the area. Originally the Lighthouse had one oil lantern with a rotating reflector but then had an upgrade with 21 custom made lamps and silver plated reflectors making it visible from up to 60km away. As modern technology took over, the lighthouse was automated but it has more than served its purpose over the years.

Church Of St John The Baptist, Xewkija I got first sight of this magnificent Church whilst on the Ferry between Malta and Gozo, it drew my attention far out in the distance as the Church dome stood out in the early morning Haze. Never having visited Gozo previously I asked a local person who was sitting next to me what it was called and made sure that it was one of the first places I visited during my visit to Gozo, I wasn’t disappointed. The Church is called St John The Baptist and sits proudly in the centre of Xewjika, one of the oldest villages on Gozo. To my surprise I found out that it wasn’t an old Cathedral and in similar age to St Pauls in London but was in fact only consecrated in 1971, although it did replace a Church that was built in 1665 which had become too small to accommodate the growing population of Xewjika. At 75 metres high, the dome is the 3rd biggest in the world, behind the Vatican and St Pauls. Being in my 60’s (I won’t reveal how old I am) the thought of climbing the stairs to the top of the dome was somewhat daunting, but to my pleasant surprise, there is a lift that gets you up in a matter of seconds. Inside the Church is bright, with the most wonderful paintings and artefacts, including an Alter from the original Church and other historical artefacts that can be found in the museum. Next time we come to Gozo we will ensure we are around for the Village Feast which takes place in June.

GOZITAN WEDDING FAIRY TALE A wedding abroad in a sunny climate can seem like a far fetched dream for many couples but getting hitched in a place where you are more or less guaranteed that rain will not ruin the big day is becoming very popular, and is a lot easier to organise than you think. Gozo is a dream wedding destination, you have everything you could possibly wish for, sun, beaches, some fantastic venues, plenty of Churches, fabulous food and stunning accommodation for your guests, all at a very reasonable price. One such couple, Sophie and Brad decided to tie the not after holidaying at Brads Grandparents house on The
Island for the past 8 years...they simply fell in love with the Island..they tell us their story about the big day and share some hints and tips about a wedding abroad. Sophie and Brad, first of all congratulations on getting married, where are you both from and how did you meet? Thanks very much! Brad and I are from Rayleigh, Essex in the UK. We met at School (Childhood sweethearts!) we started dating at 16 and have been together ever since! What prompted you to choose Gozo as your wedding destination? Were you looking at other countries? Brad’s grandparents live in Nadur so we have been to Gozo every year for the past 8 or so! We got engaged there too; on my birthday in 2014 Brad proposed on a Scuba Dive. Atlantis Dive Centre (Based in Marsalforn) were all in on it too, I had no idea! He planted a treasure chest in a beautiful bay near to Xlendi…you can watch it on this website link...
http://hoy-wedding.weebly.com/ We didn’t even think about getting married in another country, if it wasn’t at home it had to be in Gozo which really, we both feel is our second home. We love the island, the people, the architecture. It’s a beautiful place. Did it live up to your expectations? Absolutely. It really was the best day. Everything was perfect. Did you invite guests from the UK/Ireland? Where did everyone stay? Did you plan any events during their stay ? Yes, we had over 90 guests at our wedding and most travelled from the UK. We are very lucky to have such a supportive family and group of friends. It was great to have had them all there and to introduce them to Gozo. We created a website to give everyone a little information on the island as most people we meet say ‘Where’s that!?’ or ‘I’ve never heard of it’. In a way that’s such a special feeling, such a beautiful place that you feel... 31
Sophie and Brad’s Gozo Wedding ...is a little secretive. On the other hand, when you speak of the island and you find someone that’s been there too you could speak for hours. Everyone stayed in different places, most rented an apartment or a villa, some stayed in The Grand Hotel, some in others, they were all dotted around the island!
anyone that reads that knows exactly what I mean. The relaxed and welcoming nature is just something we adore.
We went with some friends to visit the Azure window; we are so glad they got to see it. We had great BBQs together, days at Ramla. We organised a group scuba dive too with Atlantis, we know how fab it is to dive there and really wanted to show everyone how good it is! We had a mix of some that had dived before and some newbies. It was great fun.
Brad, the best man and ushers stayed at the Villa we rented and I, with the maid of honour and bridesmaids were at the Kempinski in San Lawrenz. Atlantis kindly took the boys to the church in their diving truck, I had a traditional wedding car collect me and my dad.
We were so busy during the run up to the wedding day we couldn’t fit much in but it was great that everyone could explore the island alone and get to know the place and relax, many of our guests had a holiday out of it too. Once we were home it was so nice to hear how many loved the island and really got into the Gozo spirit, I think
Tell us all about the wedding day, Transport to the venue? Ceremony? And reception? What was on the menu?
We were married in Ghajnsielem church (The newly built church in the middle of the square). The only thing I can compare it to is St Pauls Cathedral in London, it is a beautiful, huge church with a grand entrance (and lots of stairs to walk up too!) We arranged for a harpist named Charlene to play whilst guests arrived and I walked down the aisle to Charles Buttigieg signing Ave Maria, it was amazing.
We married around 5pm and after the ceremony had prosecco on the terraced area outside. We arranged for the infamous train on Gozo to collect our guests and take them to the reception, from what I heard everyone loved singing along to ‘Hey baby’! Me and Brad went off to have our pictures taken, Inigo from Hush photography was great, such a lovely guy and he got some fantastic shots! The reception was held at the Country terrace just around the corner from where we married, I can honestly say Joseph (the owner) was fantastic, everything was perfect. He had his staff working together magnificently it just looked beautiful. The views alone are breath taking, those that were new to the island stood in awe of the most fantastic sights over the harbour with Comino in the distance. I remember walking in and seeing all our friends and family taking it all in, it was the best feeling. We allowed everyone to choose what they wanted to eat (out of a few options which we organised before...

Sophie and Brad’s Gozo Wedding ...the day) there’s nothing worse than having to endure food you don’t like so we thought that would work a treat. We had canapés for starters along with more bubbles and a sit-down meal for the main. The food was delicious and looked great. I think me and my husband were one of the last to leave the reception (around 5am can you believe!) we cut our cake, had our fist dance and then the rest of the night flew by. From day one of planning, we could have anything and everything. Everyone was so kind and we felt anything we imagined we could create. It was by far the best day of our lives and we’ve taken so many wonderful memories from the day that we will both cherish forever. What month did you get married ? We got married in August, it was a lovely hot day but had a really good breeze so it kept us all cool – I wore a traditional wedding dress and I made the boys wear a three piece suit! So even the weather was perfect for the day!
Did you get any local help planning the wedding? Our friends we have made over the years, everyone knows someone who does something which is so helpful! Brads grandparents also ran around for us quite a bit which was a huge help. We had a weeks wedding planning in Gozo the year before and organised most over email. Looking back everything was so easy to organise. How easy was it getting married on Gozo ? Was there much red tape? Do you have any tips for couples thinking of getting married here ? I think it’s important to know for anyone thinking of marrying here, it can be done! They are governed by the same Marriage Law act as the U.K so firstly it’s legal. You’ll need to get in touch with the registry office as there is a few forms that need completing within certain dates so make sure they are noted somewhere and not forgotten about! Most churches are Catholic- As we are Church of England we did have to meet with various parish priests to get permission. We
travelled over to Malta to meet father Simon in Valletta who is a member of the Church of England and had to get a letter signed by the Bishop of Gozo. Like the UK you need two witnesses sign the marriage certificate which you’ll need to order copies of when you are home; they take a few weeks to complete. The registry office was a great help and directed us where we needed to go and who we needed to speak to. You can of course, very much like home, have ceremonies in the beautiful hotels there. There are wedding planners everywhere, everything is so like home it’s just so much more relaxed! If you don’t have any contacts on the island a planner would be a huge help but we done it without and it worked just fine! What is your favourite memory of the wedding? Having our family and friends around us to share the day made it so special. We shared tears and laughter and we created exactly what we envisioned which means a great deal. So much so I’d love to do it all over again!

This first, pop-up, exhibition in November 2015 was a great success and convincedme to take the next step and create a permanent new art gallery. I saw an opportunity in Gozo to link art, craft and business; promoting Fair Trade in a North/South dynamic. I found a stunning exhibition space on Palm Street, in the pedestrian heart of Victoria, which immediately felt like home. With this art gallery I am continuing my commitment to the promotion of new facets of Fair Trade in Gozo, and the celebration of the beauty of cultural integration and diversity. The response from both visitors and residents has been amazing. What is new for this year? Why did you decide to open a Fair Trade art gallery in Gozo? I have always been a firm believer in the principles of Fair Trade. I had been running two Fair Trade retail businesses in Gozo – Organika and Lazuli – for the last nine years, but in my previous professional life I was a cultural manager. I discovered some incredible Fair Trade artwork in Paris fewyears ago at a Fair Trade expo and was immediately inspiredto introduce the concept in Gozo. I was so touched by some of the similarities with Gozo in the themes of the work I saw: the maritime landscape; flora and fauna; subsistence agriculture and fishing; religious faith and symbolism; and colonialism and insularity. I just fell in love with the works and felt compelled to develop a working relationship with the talented and innovative artists who were creating such special pieces. How did you start? I organised the first collaborative exhibition on the Maltese Islands to promote the work of Haitian and Zimbabwean artists.
For the 2017 season Lazuli Art has a stunning andvibrant variety of art from around the world. Bronzes from Benin, terracotta and metal work from Burkina Faso, unique wooden Bozo puppets from Mali, traditional masks from the Ivory Coast, and wood from the Philippines. The gallery is also showcasing new and different work in recycled metal by Rony Jacques of Haiti and the Fair Trade artist co-op in Zimbabwe. And what about the future? With each new season I look forward to finding and introducing to Gozo new Fair Trade work by exciting, surprising, artists. But I also want, once a year, to showcase brilliant local artists. This year, in March, before the launch of the new season, I held a short exhibition of works by the Maltese artist James Vella Clark; I plan to collaborate each year with other local artists I admire. David Pace, a company founder, said “We have a substantially larger portfolio of properties, including renovation projects, than we ever list online, so do contact us with your specific requirements. We have built a good collaborative network in Gozo
which enables us to show the vast majority of properties available on the market. Our service levels are of the greatest importance to the way we wish towork with all our clients, so as to give them a rewarding and fruitful experience. Tax and other incentives for purchasing immovable property in Gozo can change from time to time, so register with us to keep in the loop”. Buying a Property. The process on Gozo is quite straightforward. Once a property has been selected and we have negotiated a price agreement, along with any special conditions, between you and the seller, an appointment is set with a Notary to prepare and sign the Preliminary Agreement or what is commonly known as the 'Konvenju' or 'Promise of Sale (POS)', which legally binds both the purchaser and the vendor to conclude the transaction within an established period of time, subject to any agreed conditions. By law, all immovable property transactions must be transacted through a Malta Notary Public and be registered with the Public Registry. The Notary, usually appointed by the buyers but has a duty of care to both parties, will prepare a sale agreement. On agreement to the terms of contract and signing of the 'Promise of Sale' you will be required to pay 1% provisional stamp duty as part payment of the full 5% ( see current stamp duty exceptions below), the balance of which is due on signing of the final deed, and an agreed deposit, which is typically 10%. It is advisable therefore to ensure that you have the necessary funds lodged directly with the Notary's client account in Malta, some days prior to the signing of the POS. Failure to do this may jeopardise or delay the signing. We can also recommend reliable International Currency Brokers who can help you achieve the best transfer rates. During the ‘Promise of Sale’ Term The Notary Public carries out the necessary searches to verify legal title and to ensure that there are no outstanding debts, hypothecs or liens on the property. If an AIP (Application for...36
MOVE2GOZO.COM ...permit is required, then the Notary will make the application on your behalf. Typically this takes between 2-4 months and costs €233 Euro on issue of permit. An AIP is required if you are an EU citizen and already own a property in the EU, or you are not an EU Citizen. There are exceptions to AIP requirements, including purchasing in special designated areas and for purposes of business. Contact us for more details on these exceptions. The Vendor will complete all special requirements e.g. complete any outstanding works, as agreed with buyer and/or as specifically stipulated in the POS. The Vendor is also obliged to supply, or commission if one does not exist, an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) report for the property. These certificates are valid for 10 years from issue. The Purchaser should complete all the special requirements e.g. organise any bank loan, check on building permits, etc. as agreed upon with seller and stipulated in the POS. It is important to be aware that the deposit is forfeited in favour of the vendor if the purchaser does not appear on the final deed without a valid reason at law. During this entire period move2Gozo, as part of their service, are on hand to guide and assist in any queries, concerns or issues the purchaser or the vendor may have in relation to completing the contract. move2Gozo has very good relationships with all the leading banks on the island and can also assist you in setting up meetings with the bank of your choice. They also offer project management or full turnkey services for any renovation works you may need to carry out on your new property. This service is offered exclusively to clients who have purchased through move2Gozo. Once all the mandatory requirements of the agreement have been met, a date is set for the actual signing of the Final Deed. This can also be before the end of the 'Promise of Sale’ term if both parties agree. The contract signing will usually take place at the office of the Notary Public or at a venue jointly agreed by the buyer and seller and the Bank, if a bank loan is involved. The final deed is read and agreed upon and the balances due will be paid accordingly. These are; balance of the selling price to the vendor; the balance due to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue for stamp duty as well as notarial fees. The keys to the property are then handed over and you become the new owner of the property. The Notary public registers the contract with the Public Registry. Expenses Incurred When Buying A Property! Stamp Duty 5% duty on documents is calculated on the purchase price of the immovable property. This rate is reduced to 2% if the immovable property is in Gozo and the purchase is completed prior to 31 Dec 2017. If the Buyer is an EU Citizen declaring on deed that he/she shall reside in the property being purchased as his sole ordinary residence, then the preferential rate of 3.5%(not relevant during 2% discounted period above) is applied on the first €150,000 of the price. In respect of transfers of immovable property, made before the 31st December 2017, no duty shall be chargeable on the first €150,000 of the aggregate value of the consideration
paid for the acquisition of such property, provided that this is the first immovable property acquired inter vivos by such person. No stamp duty is charged on the cost of any furniture or other movables declared in the contract of sale. Promise of sale agreements have to be registered with the Inland Revenue Department and 1% provisional duty is payable at this stage on the contract value of the property being transferred. The provisional duty is off set against the final duty due on the final deed, or is refunded in case the deal fails to materialise. Notarial Fees Notarial fees, paid for by the purchaser, are typically between 1.5to 2% of the purchase price for the immovable property. This may vary according to the volume of title research required but is calculated transparently and according to law using a public online calculator, which can be found on the Notaries of Malta website. Overall Buyer Costs in 2017 For property purchases which complete before 31 December 2017, the net expenses due to the purchaser should not exceed 4 % of the Immovable Property purchase price, so now is an excellent time to buy. These expenses are expected to revert back to 7% in 2018. If you would like to organise a viewing trip we can source the vast majority of properties currently available on the market, as we do not list many of them on our website. Contact us to organise a shortlist based on your requirements, book a visiting date and accommodation, and leave the rest to us! The book comprises of six stories and they are New Creature on the Island, Flying Henry, Brains or Brawn?, Lenny's Leap, Anyone for Tennis and Lenny in the Loo. he Gozo Cat Detectives by Sarah Springham and illustrations by Ryan Galea and Philip Taliana are stories about courageous, curious cats and the animal friends they meet in the course of their adventures, as they travel around Gozo solving mysteries and bringing happiness and understanding wherever they can. The Gozo Cat Detectives helps us all to get through life's difficulties with tolerance, bravery, humour, support in problem-solving, understanding and love.
ozo Gems by Linda Henry and illustrations by Joanna Portelli is an eclectic mix of poems, inspired by the love affair the author has been having with 'this bejewelled isle' since her first visit 30 years ago. It explores the little country lanes, sweeping valleys, villages, capital, flora, fauna and the festivals in an insightful way, shedding new insights, perspectives and parallels, and above all celebrating all things Gozitan. This is a holiday souvenir that will stand the test of time.
The Author - Graham is a 68 year old retired fork lift instructor. He is married, with three grown up children and eleven grandchildren. He moved to Gozo with his wife almost 9 years ago to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the laid back lifestyle of the Maltese people. Having looked for books for the grandchildren, stories of Gozo and Malta,he was disappointed to find that there was nothing suitable for them and he took the decision to write his own stories, and some of these have been published.
The Author - Sarah was born in London in 1952 and wrote the stories to help her cope with the grief she felt after Madam died. Sarah loves Gozo because it's relatively quiet and peaceful and filled with charming people. Sarah lives on Gozo with her partner Ian who suffers from mental health issues which he manages from the skills he learnt and taught at the first Recovery College in the UK. They came to Gozo in the hope that they could re-create this experience and help those with mental health problems and started an NGO called Pharos.
The Author - Growing up in London in the early sixties, Linda started writing poetry at the age of 10, encouraged by her late grandfather. Despite suffering 3 strokes since 2016 Since her retirement she has been contributing to Gozitan life by teaching on a voluntary basis at Gozo Sixth Form College, the Girls' and Boys' Secondary Schools and helping to run a poetry lunch club at the Bishop's Conservatory School, as well as judging the poetry entries submitted to the 'Gozo Live' writing events. She also regularly visits patients at Gozo General Hospital.

Octavius Moves House
Gozo, Is The Grass Greener
Graham Bayes
Freya Barrington
ctavius Moves House by Graham Bayes, drawings and illustrations by Bernard Micallef and Jeanelle Zammit, is aimed at children six to eight years of age. This book tells the story of an octopus named Octavius and two lampuki (Dorado) fish named Linda and Larry. The latter lost their way in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the beautiful Maltese Islands. Did they find their parents? What was the reaction when Linda and Larry's mum and dad set eyes on Octavius? From this story we learn that when we help someone it makes us feel really good...
ozo Is The Grass Greener is a winner in the Biography / Autobiography / Memoir Category of the 2016 Paris Book Festival and received an Honorable mention in the Biography / Autobiography / Memoir Category of the 2015 London Book Festival. It is the story of Freya Barrington and her husband, Steve, when they moved from the UK to live on the small, Mediterranean island of Gozo in the Maltese archipelago. Illustrated with numerous photographs, the book is filled with laugh-out-loud anecdotes and more sombre stories for which handkerchiefs will be needed...
...including an emotive, yet candid account of a real life struggle with Bipolar Disorder. Freya writes with unreserved honesty about how she and Steve met and fell in love. She goes on to share the story of their joint singing career, the manic drive across Europe; their fun-loving lurchers, Ollie and Ralph; and many other delightfully amusing tales about living in Gozo for four years. Gozo: Is the Grass Greener? has widespread appeal, making the book suitable for locals and nonlocals alike. A must buy on your trip to Gozo The Author - Freya Barrington grew up in Lancashire, England with an overriding passion for animals, specifically horses. After attending a girl’s grammar school, where unsurprisingly English was her strongest subject, the only desire Freya held was to work with her beloved horses. To the dismay of her parents, she went to work in a racing yard. In 2010, Freya moved with her husband, Steve, to the island of Gozo in the Maltese Islands. She continued working in England as an agency social worker, flying back and forth on a fortnightly basis. It was during this particular time that the idea for the book starting taking shape, so with the full support of her husband, Freya took a year’s sabbatical to concentrate on writing the book.

Gozo Tourism Awards, Jean Pierre Grech, owner and chef patron of Zafiro Restaurant, won the Gozo Tourism Worker of the Year Award 2016, and the Gozo Young Tourism Worker of the Year Award was won by Moira Debrincat, head chef at Brookies Restaurant.
The awards were presented by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo. This was the ninth edition of Gozo Tourism Awards organised by the Gozo Tourism Association. The awards aim are to acknowledge, commend, encourage and thank all workers and entrepreneurs who distinguish themselves in the performance of their duties in Gozo’s tourism industry.
Anton Refalo, who was speaking at a public meeting in the ‘Gvern Li Jisma’ series in Xewkija, said that he was also looking forward to a tunnel between Gozo and Malta but insisted any tunnel should link up to a tunnel network. “It is not enough having a tunnel that delivers Gozitans to Cirkewwa or Mellieha because they would still be stalled by the traffic on the roads of
Malta,” he insisted. Gozo is doing well on the tourism front with 1.1 million tourist nights registered last year alone, a figure which did not include Maltese visitors and the Island is now seeing a diverse mix of nationalities visiting the Island; including Eastern Europeans, Spanish and Chinese visitors. This year, 3 beaches in Gozo and 9 in Malta have been awarded with the Blue Flag Eco Label award by Blue Flag International. For a beaches to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and access related criteria must be met and maintained. Ramla, Hondoq and Marsalforn were the 3 Gozitan beaches awarded this year. Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg recently announced two new sporting projects, one at Ulysses Grove Xewkija – consisting of tracks, for walking, running and cycling and the other – an outdoor multi-sports facility at the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria.

Jesus in Thy Neighbour is a missionary movement founded by Dun George Grima, a Gozitan priest which is this year celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary. Father Grima‘s missionary work stretches back to 1977 when he went on his first mission to Brazil where over the course of 10 years he helped to build homes for orphaned children in the Minais Gerais region of Brazil. Over the last 30 years Father Grima has worked tirelessly on projects supporting poor children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Brazil. Recent projects include providing teaching courses, food relief, the building of numerous schools, kindergartens and facilities for disabled children. It is now 41 years since Gozo SPCA was founded by a British resident Jane Sedgfield. She was concerned by the number of stray cats and dogs in Gozo and also at the difficulties of

Specialities include some fantastic steaks and a full range of pizzas and pasta dishes are available. The Moby Dick has a full Chinese Menu, the sizzling chilli chicken comes highly recommended. Look out for the daily specials, including fresh local fish and wine of the week. Marina St, Xlendi, tel: +356 21561518.
Il Kcina Ghawdxija,
The name means the Gozitan Kitchen and now has new home on the Xlendi waterfront. Set up by seasoned restauranteur, Charlie Bonnici, the remit of the menu is local
Gozitan food, and it is the only restaurant in Xlendi that serves only local Gozitan food. The team really want their clients to experience the Islands Rich culinary experience. Charlie is passionate about Gozitan food and culture and the menu reflects his up bringing, I am sure even Gozitans would appreciate the dishes as those their mothers and grandmothers used to make. Dishes include Minestra and Pulpetti tal-hut, Imqarrun il-forn and Torta tal-fenek. If you want to experience authentic Gozo food then this is the place to go. Xlendi Waterfront, Xlendi, For reservations tel:+356 7953 9117.
Sapana Indian Restaurant
Most of us like Indian cuisine and a change from the norm, Xlendi is home to the Islands only full service Indian restaurant, Sapana, located two paces from the sea. Sapana is what I would call an old school Indian restaurant, it’s not a pretentious, new style Indian you might find in London, but one that serves traditional curries, the food is served in the classic iron curry dishes and the portions are extremely generous. Fresh and full of flavour, the menu at Sapana makes for an exciting getaway to Asia. The food is spiced sensation. Great staff and a family friendly atmosphere are also strong selling points. Rabat Rd, Xlendi, tel: +356 21562100.
Captains Table
The Captains Table, part of the Moby Dives Complex, is a classic pub, offering great value for money, pasta, meat dishes, pizza’s, burgers and an all you can eat buffet on selected evenings. It’s a great place to go for a pint, with the most extensive array of beers on Gozo, it is the only real English style pub on Gozo and has live music three times a week. Gostra St, Xlendi, tel: +35621551616.
The Pirates Galley
The Pirates Galley, located on the waterside is a new addition to the waterfront and offers great value for money pasta, meat dishes, pizza’s, burgers and a mean breakfast. It’s a great place to set up and watch the world go by and watch divers enter the water beneath your feet. There is also live music at least once a week.
Marvellous Marsalforn Otters Bistro
Otters Bistro has one of the most commanding views of Marsalforn. Set on it’s own, nestled along the rugged coastline, it has a
fantastic terrace which is ideal for a spot of lunch during the day, if you are lucky you might see a water polo match or for a romantic meal at evening time. Sit back and watch Marsalforn in all of it’s glory from across the bay. Albert and the team have worked tirelessly to get both the ambiance and the menu balanced. The result, a menu full of vibrant, traditional, hand made dishes that have been well executed. Dining at the waters edge, one has the choice of A La Carte as well as daily specials. Specials include Asparagus & Smoked Salmon Risotto and Crusted Fillets of Dentici, this however changes on a daily basis. As well as the restaurant there is also a beach lido and lounge bar if you just fancy a cool relaxing drink !. Open daily from 12pm - 22.30pm. St Mary St, Marsalforn, tel: +35621556606.
Pulena
Pulena been a main stay on the Marsalforn food front for the last two decades, the reason is simple, the food is fresh, tasty, well prepared and it’s clear that passion is put into each dish that goes out to the customer. Godwin and his family have worked hard to keep the standards high. La Pulena serves delicious home made pasta, including freshly made baked ravioli topped with tomato, cream and parmesan cheese, and specialises in fresh fish and meat dishes. There is also an extensive pizza menu available. Where possible La Pulena sources it’s menu locally. Marina St, Marsalforn, tel: +356 2155 9777.
Sleepy Xaghra Rubble Bar
Rubble Bar/Restaurant, has been one of the main stays of the Xaghra food scene for a long time. Local regulars mix with tourists who are drawn to the bar for it’s relaxed atmosphere and a place where you can catch up with friends. The terrace has great views of the square and inside, the bar has an oldie worldie feel to it where you can feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Rubble serves up delicious plates of local Gozitan delicacies, as well as excellent pasta, meat and fish dishes. If you are not feeling peckish then the bar serves great cocktails and has a large selection of wines available. The owner Audrey, will make you feel at home and service is always with a smile. Don’t be surprised if you are on your own and a stranger strikes up a conversation with you, it’s that kind of place where people are made to feel welcome. Victory Square, Xaghra, tel:+356 21563758.

Ta Frenc
Ta’Frenc is an institution for real foodies who are looking for a fine dining experience and executive chef Mario Schembri and his team do not fail to deliver. Ta’Frenc is housed in an authentic old farmhouse and diners have the choice of dining in their own private dining room or on the beautiful terrace. As you walk into the restaurant you may notice a sweet smell in the air, this is in fact the new herb garden where both herbs and flowers are grown organically and used throughout the menu. The menu has a classic French feel to it and includes an a la carte menu as well as various market menus that offer very good value. The fish soup is a must as is the Chateaubriand, if you have room for desert I highly recommend the Crepes Suzette, flamed at the table no less. Ta’Frenc is closed on Tuesdays. Ta’Frenc is also a great place to get married, there is a romantic feel to the place and an array of wedding choices. Marsalforn Rd, Xaghra, tel: +356 21553888.

IT Tokk
This is THE PLACE in It Tokk to sit back, relax,
have some food and enjoy the ambiance of the square. Sitting in a square in Gozo is a great past time and there aren’t many better places than It Tokk, during the day you can watch the market unfold as people go about their daily business and at night you can enjoy wonderful views from the roof terrace of both the square and Citadel lit up in their glory. People past and present all have happy memories about IT Tokk, it’s a place where friends are made and old friends from a previous life time meet up to reminisce. The atmosphere aside the food is excellent, it is what I would call great hearty food,
portions are super and the local rabbit stew, cooked with an old Grech family recipe is sublime. The fish soup goes very well with a slice or two of Gozitan bread and Vanessa, Tony and the team treat each customer as part of the family. The reason it is so successful and people come back time is because they do the simple things well. IT-Tokk, Independence Square, Victoria, tel: +356 2155 1213.
Brookies
Lying behind the Citadel in a quiet part of Victoria you will find the wonderfully restored Brookies Restaurant & Music Bar which is now firmly back on the Gozitan restaurant scene. The owners have gone to great lengths to offer visitors a unique dining and drinking experience in extremely laid back surroundings. At Brookies you can feel the history that surrounds you. The menu has been redesigned and offers a unique twist on classic dishes. Starters include home made beef carpaccio, smoked duck breast and tail on prawns wrapped in potato. Amongst the choice of mains are braised lamb shanks, pork belly and quails in cinnamon and honey, as well as pizza, pasta, meat and fish dishes. Brookies hold regular music events which are advertised on their website www.brookiesgozo.com and their facebook page. For reservations contact (+356) 2155 0942. Address, 1/2 Triq Wied Sara

Whether one is looking for a light snack, a quick meal, a warm cup of tea, a delicious dessert, or simply a drink with friends, this is the place to be. The atmosphere the cafeteria provides is truly ideal. The cafeteria offers a vast range of baguettes, salads, savoury snacks, as well as homemade cakes and pastries, on a daily basis. Besides the variety of food, smoothies and fresh fruit juices are also available. The Duke Shopping Centre, Republic St, Victoria, tel: +356 2155 5502.
Cup Cake
The area around the bus terminal is a hive of activity and amongst the hussle and bussle you will find a gem of a cafe/restaurant called Cup Cake. Going strong now for the last couple of years, Chris and the gang have created a menu that appeals to everyone, whether you want a full English breakfast (awesome), a ciabatta/ftira, sandwich, burger, pasta or a la carte. Their breakfast
ftira is famous. This has to be one of the best cafeterias on the Island, it does great coffee too. The guys here don’t take themselves too seriously and the atmosphere is fun and friendly. If you want good, honest comfort food then Cup Cake will deliver. Triq Salvatore Psaila, Victoria, tel: +356 2155 1112.

EAT LIKE A LOCAL
Ftira BiĹź-Ĺźejt Whilst travelling around Gozo and The Maltese Islands on the menu of snack bars, cafes and restaurants you will see Ftira Biz-Zejit, which literally translates as bread with oil but is so much more. Tuna is normally the main ingredient and this is quite possibly one of the best sandwiches you will ever taste. What makes a Tuna Ftira so special is the fresh ingredients that goes into it. From the capers to the tomato paste (Kunserva) everything has been made locally and if one sandwich could tell a story about Gozitan/Maltese products it would be this.
Ingredients: - Crusty Ftira bread - Three Hills tomato paste (kunserva) - Capers, Olives, Onions, Garlic to taste, chopped - 1 (160 g) can Elite tuna drained - Broad beans (optional) - Pepper and salt to taste - Flat leaf parsley leaves - Extra virgin olive oil Instructions: 1- Cut the ftira portion in half, spread tomato paste. 2- Sprinkle capers, olives, onions, garlic, tuna and broad beans as desired. 3- Season with freshly ground pepper and sea salt; 4- Finally sprinkle with parsley and drizzle generously with extra virgin olive oil 52
EAT LIKE A LOCAL
Ingredients: Pastry: - 14 oz flour, water, A pinch of salt, 2 oz soft shortening, 2 oz margarine Filling: - 14 oz ricotta (Or Peas), 4 eggs, salt & pepper.
I was first introduced to Pastizzi as a 7 year old boy at Tapies Bar in The Capital, Victoria in 1987. We asked the proprietor for a snack and out he bought four Pastizzi, two cheese and two pea, being 7 years old, peas weren’t top of the list so the cheese Pastizzi won hands down. A Pastizzi is a traditional savoury snack found in bars and bakerys throughout the Maltese Islands. Fillings are normally Ricotta like cheese or peas and has been a favourite for Gozitan workers looking for a quick snack for generations. Don’t worry about the calories, they are delicious!
Instructions: Put the flour in a mixing bowl, add enough water to make a stiff dough. Beat (in electric mixer) on medium speed until smooth. Roll the pastry out 1/8" thick on a floured board, spread the shorteneing over the whole surface, using the hands. Roll up as for Swiss roll. Now roll the pastry out again - spread it this time with margarine. When ready for use roll it out for the third time. Make the filling. Mash the ricotta (peas) with a fork, add the salt and the unbeaten eggs. The pastizzi may now be made into little tartlets. Bake in a hot oven (max) for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden brown. 53
CAPITAL
VICTORIA to 1500BC which dominates the skyline. Within its walls lies a fine 17th century baroque Cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafà, the Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina.
All roads lead to Victoria, the Capital. Otherwise known as Rabat to the locals, The Islands Capital is very much it’s heart beat. It is where people go to do their daily chores. If you need something, whether it be a fresh pepper, or a pump for your bicycle, Victoria will have it, and if they haven’t just ask a local and they will definitely know where you can get it. Steeped in History and dominated by The Citadel, Victoria wakes up early. It’s not uncommon to see local cafés and bars, thriving from 6am onwards. In Gozo it’s Pastizzi for breakfast, a local pastry filled usually with Peas or Cheese, the latter being my favourite, washed down with a coffee. A great way to appreciate Victoria is to park yourself outside a bar/café for a couple of hours. Our favourites are It Tokk in Independence Square, Cup Cake opposite The Bus Station, Tapies Bar in San Francisk Square, and the numerous cafes located in St George’s square.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO Victoria has gone through somewhat of a transformation over the last three years, it’s had a bit of a ‘’spring clean’’, The Citadel has been returned to its former glory, a beautiful Park has been redefined (Villa Rundle Gardens) and the main squares of IT Tokk and Savina Square have been given a makeover. A visit to Victoria, and Gozo, would not be complete without a visit to the Citadel, a historic fortress dating back

XLENDI
Xlendi, is a picture postcard bay located to the south west of the Island and is a firm favourite amongst Gozitans, Maltese and Tourists a like. Many people are attracted to Xlendi due to the Waterside setting of the many bars and restaurants that line the quayside. There is also a small sandy beach and excellent sunbathing spots located around the bay and plenty of water sports activities to keep all of the family happy including canoeing, banana boats, pedalos and diving schools. Self-Drive motor boats can also be hired as well as fishing trips organised, see page ...Xlendi is home to over 20 restaurants that serve up fresh fish caught the same day, pasta, pizza, Indian, Chinese, and excellent meat dishes. WHAT TO SEE AND DO As you would expect from a sea-front location, everything revolves around the water in Xlendi, hire a boat from Xlendi Pleasure Cruises and explore the bays around Xlendi or venture further a field to Comino or around the Island. Xlendi is home to several large caves including St Catherine’s Cave and Carolina's cave. Carolinas is found on the cliffs on the right hand side of the bay if you are looking out to the sea. The cave was once the property of Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria. In later years she founded the Augustinian Sisters on Gozo and donated almost all of her land, including the cave and other land in Xlendi to the sisters.
SEAFRONT PARADISE
and fauna, these are allowed to flourish as the valley isn’t populated. The Watchtower is reached by a bridge built by the Knights of Saint John over the Kantra Valley.
During the summer months the Sisters would reside in Xlendi and would bath in the cave that offered them privacy from other swimmers as it could only be reaches by private stairs. St Catherine’s Cave is located to the right of the bay, just as you are entering Xlendi Bay, it is a popular place for snorkelers and divers alike owing to the crystal clear waters found in and around the cave. During the 17th Century, people in fact lived around the cave and it received its name after a Church that was built above the site and the Saint whom the Church was dedicated to. Unfortunately the church is longer on the site. At the Head of the Bay you will find an old watchtower dating back to 1650, it was built on the order of Grandmaster Lascaris and stands 35 ft square at its base and 30 courses high. Although visitors cannot go inside the watchtower, it is currently being restored, but it is well worth the walk, for sun seekers there are some fabulous bathing opportunities around the tower. The Watch Tower can be reached by following the coastal path to the left of the bay through the Kantra Valley and by taking the bridge that connects the headland to the land. Il-Kantra is a valley found to the left hand side of the bay close to the watchtower. The name Kantra derives from Alcantara in Spanish-Sicilian. This is due to the odd shape of the valley that resembles a bow. Il-Kantra is home to many types of flora
In 1955 During British rule of the Maltese Islands several emergency mills were built that were capable of producing flour for the Islands if a Cold War was to break out. One of these mills was excavated in the cliffs behind The Mount Carmel Church, in Xlendi, and is the only one left intact on Malta and Gozo. The excavation of the mill was a huge undertaking, cumulating in an entrance tunnel some 30 metres long, and a 3 storey chamber that housed the grinding and milling equipment, thankfully the mill was never put into use, but there are plans to restore the mill to its former glory as most of the original equipment is still inside. The church in Xlendi is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and dates back to 1868. On the first Sunday of September each year a feast is celebrated in honour of Mount Carmel and it is a really enjoyable weekend to be in Xlendi. During the day water games are held in the bay, with the traditional 'gostra' a greasy pole that you have to climb to seize a flag, proving very popular.

o the west of the island you will find one of the most visited places on the Maltese islands. As you travel through the beautiful village of San Lawrenz you will see signs for the Inland Sea, Dwejra and Fungus Rock. As you make your way down the winding road the full beauty of what lies ahead is only a couple of minutes away. Halfway down the road Fungus Rock and Dwejra should be in sight and you start to understand why this is well trodden tourist path. This area of Gozo, commonly known as Dwejra is the one that you will have seen pictured in all of the guidebooks thanks to The Azure Window which sadly collapsed into the sea in March 2017. Once you arrive in the car park, head down the short hill where a visitors centre can be found on the right hand side which provides lots of information about the local area. At the bottom of the hill you will be greeted by a serene Inland Sea, a lagoon type lake that has direct access to the sea via a
Inland Sea man made tunnel. Swimming and snorkelling is excellent and those brave enough may decide to put on their flippers and venture through the tunnel into the open sea but we recommend you take a boat trip and let the professionals guide you instead. Once through the tunnel you will see many natural rock formations that look like amongst others a human face and a crocodile. Boat trips normally last around 15 minutes and cost around 5 euros per person and are well worth it! The Inland Sea is characterised by the fishing huts that's surround the bay and have been passed down between family members over many years. Head back up the hill and to your right you will see the spot where The Azure Window, once proudly stood. This area is extremely popular with scubadivers. Just behind the car park you will find St Anne’s Chapel, built in 1963, Special festivities are held every year on the 25th & 26th July
in honour of St Anne’s liturgical feast. If you are lucky you might even catch a wedding. In front of the Church you will notice a large rock located just off the mainland. This is called Fungus Rock and legend has it that the plants grown on it hold special medicinal powers. The Knights Hospitaller apparently discovered the fungus and used it as a styptic dressing for wounds and a cure for dysentery. The Knights so prized it that they often gave gifts of Gozitan Fungus to distinguished noblemen and visitors to the Maltese islands. Grand Master Pinto decreed the rock out of bounds in 1746; trespassers risked a three-year spell as oarsmen in the Knights' galleys. He posted a permanent guard there and even built a precarious cable-car basket from the rock to the mainland, 50 metres away. Between Gharb and San Lawrenz you will find the Ta’Dbiegi Craft Village home to authentic arts and crafts, a must visit. @terihardy 65

Gharb is a beautiful Village, located west of Victoria about a ten minute drive away. Gharb is one of the oldest Villages on the Island and derives it’s name from Arabic, although in Maltese it means ‘’West’’ and it is in fact the western most Village on the Island. Gharb started life as a small hamlet hundreds of years ago and was originally populated by farmers who worked the fertile land. Gharb is quintessentially Gozitian and it’s main square, with the church dominating, has been the scene of many a postcard throughout the years. The village is home to many traditional Gozitan industries and is still home to traditional lace and cotton makers. The Parish of Gharb is the second oldest Parish on Gozo, the current church, built in 1699 is dedicated to the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth. The feast is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in July. Gharb lies amongst some of the most scenic countryside on the Island, particularly at Dbiegi, the largest hill on Gozo. San Lawrenz is the only village named after it’s patron @terihardy Saint and it is dominated by it’s Church which was consecrated in 1897. The feast of St Laurence is on the 31st July 2016 and the village is full of noise and color.

Xaghra, located to the North East of the Island is the second largest Village on the Island with a population of just over 4200 people. The village is perched on a high hill and has great views of much of the Island including Ramla Bay. In Maltese, Xaghra means ‘’wilderness’’, a term relating to its location on top of a hill. Many people believe that Xaghra was one of the inhabited parts of Gozo, and looking at the architecture of the village and its surroundings it is easy to understand why. The focal point of the Village is the Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church that stands today was built in 1815 and the church is covered in marble throughout. The Village feast is celebrated on the 8th of September and if you are on Gozo at the same time, a visit to the feast is a must. In the weeks prior to the village feast, the Xaghra Youth Centre organise the annual Xaghra Youth games, an annual event that revolves around the history of the village, Gozo and Malta and includes horse racing, the building of the Ggantija Temples, The Great Siege of 1565 and other events. If you are on Gozo around the 22nd August the games are a great family event.

Nadur is Gozo’s largest village with a population of just over 5000 people. Nadur means ‘’lookout’’ in Maltese and comes from the Arabic word nadara. Perched on a high hill with commanding views of Comino and Malta it is clear why Nadur was an ideal spot to look out for unfriendly enemies. Several watchtowers were built in and around Nadur , Ta’Kenuna Tower was built by the British in the 19th century and was used as a telegraph link between Gozo and Malta. From the tower you can see much of the Island and the views out towards the Comino channel are to die for. When the Knights of St John ruled the Island a tower was built by Grand Master Nicholas Cotoner and is known as Ta’Sopu tower. It is also called Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas Tower after the two bays it sits between.

TOTAL GUIDE GETTING AROUND As there is no airport on Gozo in order to get over to The Island then you will need to take an airport transfer and ferry. Victory Garage (www.victory-garage.com) and Mayjo Car Rentals both offer direct and indirect airport transfers. The advantage of a direct transfer is that you are picked up directly from the airport and driven onto the ferry and straight to your destination in Gozo. With an indirect transfer you will be transferred to the ferry terminal where you will leave your driver and go onto the ferry as foot passengers, you will then be picked up by another company on arrival in Gozo. Cost wise there is a difference, direct transfers cost circa €60 and an indirect transfer circa €45. Whether you enjoy exploring by foot, bike, car, boat, plane, or public transport, Gozo is one of the most accessible islands that you could visit. To get the best out of what Gozo has to offer we certainly advise hiring a car for at least a couple of days, expect to pay around €15-€25 Euros per day depending on make and model of the car/time of year. We recommend Mayjo Car Rentals (www.mayjocarhire.com), and Gozo Garage (www.gozogarage.com). A great way to see the Island is by bus, unfortunately the Old Gozitan bus’s that used to be the character of the Island are no
longer in use but the bus system is now larger and a lot more reliable. Ticket prices are extremely reasonable, a 7 day unlimited ‘Explore’ ticket costs €21 for adults and €15 for children. On-board single tickets are €2 in the summer and €1.50 in the winter. For routes and timetables and other options visit www.publictransport.com.mt A great way to see the island which is fun and exhilarating is on a Segway. Gozo Segway Tours offer a variety of tours around the Island, taking in historical sights as well as the local countryside. Tours last from around one to five hours and are ideal for beginners and more serious segway users. Tours start from €15 for a 1 hour 5km trip around Ta’Cenc, Sannat to €60 for a cross country route which takes 4/5 hours and includes lunch in a traditional bakery. There are also a multitude of other trips available, group bookings are also welcome. See www.gozosegway.com for further details.
Sporty readers can hire a bike and explore Gozo at their own leisure, renting a bike is a great way to see the Island and ‘On Two Wheels’, based in Marsalforn rent out mountain bikes, mopeds and motorbikes. See www.ontwoweheelsgozo.com.

TOTAL GUIDE WATERSPORTS
Gozo is a watersports and in particular a Divers Paradise. Divers are drawn to Gozo due to the clear, warm waters, but also because of the variety of diving sites available with many caves, reefs and wrecks to explore. Malta and Gozo are yearly voted the 2nd Best Place to Dive in the world. There are some excellent diving schools throughout the island and all of the diving schools on the island of Gozo adhere to the highest safety standards. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver there are courses available for all levels. Diving is possible all year round and underwater visibility is more than 30 metres. The Ministry for Gozo has invested over â‚Ź20,775 on the 52 diving sites in Gozo since January 2014.
diving around the shores around the world. If you are new to diving there are a few legal requirements that have to be taken into consideration. The youngest age that you can dive is 10 years old and under 18's will require written a parent or consent. Most of the schools on the island offer beginners courses which generally consist of 1 to 2 hours of actual classroom based teaching on equipment and safety procedures, you will then normally be introduced into shallow waters were you will practise breathing in the water and you would then usually dive for around half up to an hour in the sea. Expect to pay about â‚Ź45 for a beginner's lesson, although cost will vary from school to school. All diving schools also offer

This year, RAZOR organised with GozoTechnical diving center the second ever Flashmob in the world, it will be available to be viewed soon in the media and social networks.. we can't say more at the moment :-) A group of divers had a thrilling encounter with a gigantic Mola mola fish. With the appearance of an underwater blimp, the fascinating Mola mola, also known as an ocean sunfish, dwarfs the humans as they swim around it. Diver Erik van der Goot, who posted close-up footage on YouTube, said the 'once-in-a-lifetime experience' occurred near Wied il-Mielah. One of the main advantages of diving in Gozo is that many of the dive sites are accessible from the shore. The dive schools on the island are generally led by well-qualified multilingual instructors who have many years experience of
There is also the opportunity to rent equipment for more experienced divers who hold the relevant qualifications to dive unaccompanied wich is Advanced Open Water or higher. Gozo has some excellent dive sites these include Billinghurst Cave, the Blue Hole, the Chimney, Coral Cave, Crocodile Rock, Double Arch Reef, Fessej Rock, Fungus Rock, Reqqa Point, San Dimitri Point, Ta'Cenc, Wied-Il-Ghasri, Xatt l'Ahmar and Xlendi Cave and Reef, there are over 70 dive sites on Gozo! Over the past 15 years several ex Gozo Channel Ferries have been scuttled around Gozo and provide an excellent artificial reef for divers. The MV Xlendi was originally scuttled in 1999 in the waters off IX-Xatt, just to the West of Mgarr. The MV Xlendi sits on the bottom of the ocean, some 40 metres deep and what makes it fascinating to divers is that it is positioned up-side down. BEACH LIFE

XATT L’AHMAR One of the less well known spots on Gozo for swimming and sunbathing but what a well kept secret it is. It’s a divers paradise ! Located near Għajnsielem to the South East of The Island, getting there by car is a must. The man made pier makes for a good spot to jump off for those inclined, while salt pans and clay cliff faces are ideal for those looking to laze around.
OF THE BEST: BEACHES & SPOTS TO COOL DOWN
RAMLA BAY Arguably the best beach on the Maltese Islands. Ramla has everything, a huge family friendly beach, water sports, clear water and some great beachside restaurants. It does get busy in the summer especially during the weekend but it is worth it. Accessible by the villages of Xaghra and Nadur, Ramla is served by Bus No 302.
MGARR IX-XINI One of our favourites!. Located in the South of The Island and accessible via the Village of Xewkija, there is a small pebble pitch and excellent swimming facilities. In 2015 Mġarr Ix-Xini was mentioned by CNN as one of the top 10 places to visit before they are changed forever. There is no public transport and a car is necessary. There is a mobile food van and an excellent sea-food restaurant.
MARSALFORN BAY A firm favourite with locals and tourists, Marsalforn is Gozo’s premier resort. There is a good sized sandy beech which is great for kids and an array of bars and restaurants to choose from. To the right of the bay is GħajnBarrani, the stretch of cliffs from Marsalforn to Ramla, a sunseekers paradise. Bus No’s 310 and 322 76 serve Marsalforn. mygozo magazine page 28
LIFES A BEACH! SAN BLAS BAY We love this place and shouldn’t really be telling you about it as we want to keep it a secret but here you go...this delightful small beach is pretty much paradise personified and you have to visit it. Access is via a steep hill and the surprise at the bottom is worth the walk. The sand is red and easy on the feet and the water crystal clear. There is a small cafe that serves drinks and snacks. San Blas is accessible via The Village of Nadur and is served by Bus No 303.
XWEJNI & QBAJJAR BAY Xwejni and Qbajjar are two bays next to each other in between Marsalforn and The Salt Pans. Both have small pebbly beaches and at Xwejni you can rent sun loungers and parasols, both have restaurants, cafes and bar facilities and the swimming is excellent, especially for snorkelling and diving. Bus NO 310 serves both bays.
XLENDI Xlendi is another one of our favourites. Whilst the beach at Xlendi is small, its ample enough for small children and there is plenty of sunbathing space dotted around the bay with people choosing to swim off the rocks on the left hand side of the bay. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you watered and fed. Bus No’s 306 and 330 serve Xlendi.
HONDOQ A firm family favourite with locals and tourists a like. There is a a small sandy beach and crystal clear waters which makes it a great sport for swimming and snorkelling. During the summer months Hondoq is a great place to have a BBQ, especially during the evening. Located directly opposite Comino it has great views of the Gozo Channel. Accessed via the village of Qala you need a car or two wheels to get down to Hondoq which is at the bottom of a steep hill.
Other notable places to swim are Dwejra, The Inland Sea, Dahlet Qorrot and The Blue Lagoon on Comino.
