EDITORS WELCOME Hi and Welcome to the 7th edition of My Gozo Magazine, your definitive guide to everything you need to know about Gozo. This is my 7th year producing the magazine and this has only been possible due to the continued support I receive from my wonderful sponsors and readers from across the globe who fill me with the encouragement, passion and desire to produce what I hope is an insightful and fun magazine to read. I also owe a debt of gratitude to The Maltese Tourism Association/MTA/ Visit Malta for their support, of which it is much appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the hotels/b+b’s/farmhouses/business’s on The Island who allow me to distribute the magazine. I cannot forget my Wife and Children who have given me their upmost support and love. My Gozo started off as a 10 page guide for guests visiting our wedding on Gozo in 2010, many of whom had never visited the Island, I never imagined that I would be producing this magazine for a 7th consecutive year. If you spot a mistake or would like to offer me any advice, please feel free to get in contact, i do this as a hobby as i have a passion for all things Gozo. The aim of My Gozo is to showcase the beauty of Gozo but also to tell you about the wonderful places to visit, and to highlight the fact that Gozo is very much a year round destination. It is no longer a surprise when we hear that celebrities are visiting Gozo, as we have all known for decades about it’s secret that keeps drawing us back year after year. For toys past and present, visit 10 Gnien Xible St, Xaghra, Open June/End of September 10:30am - 1pm and 4pm - 6pm, Mon - Sat. The Gharb Folklore Museum depicts daily life in Gozo of yesteryear. The museum is a showcase of tradi�onal life and includes the prin�ng press used for Gozo’s ﬁrst newspaper plus a collec�on of old tools and clothes. Address: - 99 Pjazza il-Knisja, Gharb. Opening Hours: Mon to Sat: 9am 4pm. Sunday: 9am - 1.00 pm Ninus Cave is a cave with stalac�tes and stalagmites located at the back of a private house on 15 January Street in Xaghra. The cave was discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa. Open daily between 8am - 6pm. Not too far from Ninnus Cave you will ﬁnd Xerri’s Gro�o, an underground cave discovered in 1924 by the owners Grandfather who discovered the cave whilst digging a well. @terihardy 8

Further caves were found whilst the family were building an air raid shelter during the 2nd world war. Visitors can see stalacite and stalagmite forma�ons including some interes�ng speleothems in the form of an elephants ear’s, a tortoise and a giraﬀe. Xerri’s Gro�o can be found on Xerri Street. Salt Pans...To the North West 06 of The Island, close to Qbajjar Bay,

you will stumble across the remarkable salt-pans, Gozo’s commercial source of fresh sea-salt. Laid bare in all their glory, the salt pans are a strong testament of Gozo of old, one that has used it’s natural resources to make a living. Pick up a fresh bag of salt while you are there. Salt Pans

Next to Dwejra, you will find The Inland Sea, a beau�ful natural lagoon , popular with swimmers and divers a like. A natural man made tunnel leads to the open sea and it is possible to take a 15 minute boat trip on one of the many fishing boats. There is a great waterside snack bar for a drink & a sandwich. Whether you are visi�ng in the 07 summer, autumn, spring or winter,

Gozo is a great place to go for a walk and burn off some calories. The Island offers some great places to go for a hike, our personal favourite is The Ta’Cenc and Sanap Cliffs in the South of The Island. We recommend star�ng your walk at the Village of Sannat, head south, past the le� of The Church, and follow signs for the Hotel Ta’Cenc, take the country track to the South and then proceed to the West where the cliffs will take you to Mgarr IX Xini. Dawn or dusk are a great �me to go walking.

For an Island that only meas08 ures 10 x 5 miles, Gozo oﬀers some

outstanding places to cool off from the hot summer sun. The Island is do�ed with beaches, inlets and secret lagoons where you can go for a dip and spend a lazy day. The most popular and largest beach is Ramla Bay, located in between Xaghra and Nadur. Ramla is a beach lovers paradise and is great for kids. There are several beach side restaurants for a bite to eat. San Blas Bay is a firm favourite, and again is great for kids, once you reach it that is. One of my childhood memories is snorkelling at Mgarr IX-Xini, it offers beau�ful water and has a 5* restaurant on it’s shore. Popular amongst locals is Hondoq Bay, near Qala and Xwejni Bay, close to Marsalforn offers good swimming and Lido facili�es. Xlendi Bay and Marsalforn are old family favourites and have a mul�tude of restaurants to choose from. MY GOZO TALKS TO ANNA ATTARD MEET THE LOCAL Tell us a bit about yourself and where you come from, what do you do? I am Anna and Gozitan. I live in Victoria the same place where I was born and brought up. I am the youngest out of three siblings. I have a 20 year old son who lives with me in a very old town house in the city centre close to the citadel. I have been working as a Learning Support Educator for the last twelve years. Art, Music and exercise are a few of my passions. Why Gozo? I worked in Malta for nine years in total. My maltese colleagues made these nine years somewhat memorable but living and working in Gozo was always my inten�on. The tranquility of the island mesmerizes me. Gozo is calm, clean and less hec�c. What do you love about Gozo? The beau�ful clear water beaches that surround it are a natural a�rac�on in itself especially beaches like San Blas, Ramla, Hondoq ir Rummien and the Inland Sea in Dwejra. What things should a tourist not miss?

The fresh fish, Gozitan Cheeselets AKA, Gbejniet, the rabbit, the Gozitan �ira and the honey and wine are all delicacies which make your mouth water When is the best �me of the year to visit Gozo? Spring and Summer are the seasons to visit Gozo. With feasts aproaching, Gozitan tradi�ons are at their best. The Leone Band which accompanies the Santa Maria feast throughout the whole week and the Gozo Cathedral which is so mages�c on top of the Citadel Hill makes it more fantas�c. The fireworks display during this week is outstanding.

The Citadel in Victoria, the Ggan�ja Temples in Xaghra, and Mixta Cave overlooking Ramla are a must see. Having said that their mother tongue is Maltese and is still their first language. The Maltese language is a fascinating mix of Arabic, Italian and English, and is the only semitic language written in Latin Letters. here is a lot more to Gozo than just the beach and a great way to explore the Island is by criss crossing it by foot. Even for the less advanced walkers amongst our readers, given the size of Gozo, 10 miles x 5 miles, there is plenty to see and explore off the beaten track. Pack your rucksack with plenty of water, some sun screen and a loaf of local bread (with some local tomatoes and cheese) and off you go to find ancient cart tracks, wild flowers and herbs, cultural sites and some stunning views. The advantage with walking on Gozo is that you will see such a diverse array of scenery in one day that you could only wish to accomplish in a week or two in other places. Gozo springs into life with an outstanding array of ﬂora, greenery and fresh smelling herbs. In this year’s magazine we won’t necessarily be taking a walk on the wild side but more delving back in history as we explore Victoria, Gozo’s bustling capital on foot. No doubt you will visit Victoria on more than one occasion during your stay on the Island and this walk will show you how to get the best out of it.. Start - Villa Rundle Gardens Start your walk at the entrance to Villa Rundle Gardens at the bo�om of Republic Street and make your

way around the Gardens, a beau�ful oasis in the middle of The City, a place where workers like to go and relax during their lunch break. The gardens have been completely re-generated over the last 5 years and there are some fantas�c open spaces that all of the family can enjoy. There is a play area and a visitor’s centre. Throughout the year there are a number of cultural events that take place in Villa Rundle that you might be lucky to come across. Once you exit the gardens, take a le� up Republic Street and a few metres along you will see the Astra Theatre, inaugurated in 1968, it has been the home to many performances by well-known local and foreign talents over the years, including renowned Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja . MY GOZO of Rigole�o. Walk past the police sta�on and take a le� at the crossroads. You will come across several food outlets and we recommend you stop off at one of them, buy a bo�le of water and a couple of Pas�zzi’s, the local Gozitan breakfast of champions, we recommend the cheese variety. Around the bus sta�on there are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy. St Francis Square Con�nue the walk along Main Gate Street and into St Francis Square, one of our favourite squares on the Island. In the square you will find a bar called Tapies, a Gozitan ins�tu�on and a definite stop off point. You will find a mix of locals and tourists cha�ng away and pu�ng the world to rights and we guarantee you will see some interes�ng cars and people drive by, all of the Islands characters seem to be drawn to it! In the corner of the square you will

find the Church of St Francis, built in 1492 and its feast is celebrated on the 8th December. For UK soap fans, St Francis square featured in an episode of Corona�on Street. Also in the square you will find The Ministry For Gozo which is the administra�ve body for the Island where the local Gozo government is housed. There is a daily fish market where fish hawkers sell their daily catch, you will not find fresher fish anywhere else on the Island! St George’s Square As you make your way from St Francis Square, follow the signs for Dwejra and the Inland Sea, and follow the street un�l you see a small street on the right-hand side called Triq Il Librerija, you are now in the heart of the old town which is characterised by its quaint alley ways and character houses. Admiring the scenery, take a right along Triq San Gorg and follow its meandering path un�l you arrive in St

Georges Square, another one of our favourite squares. St George’s square is characterised by its Basilica that goes by the same name and is a must visit. St George’s Basilica is situated in centre of the old town and the parish dates back to medieval �mes. The founda�on stone of the present church was laid on 7 August 1672, it was consecrated on 21 September 1755 and on 6 September 1958, the church was bestowed the �tle of Basilica. St Georges is known as the marble basilica as it is covered en�rely with marble. The main a�rac�on is a statue of it’s patron saint, St. George, sculpted in wood in 1838. St George celebrates feasts on the 23rd April and the 2nd week in July. The square is home to some great ar�sanal bou�que shops, including Prickly Pear and Organika, if Liquor is your thing, the bo�le shop has an amazing array of world liquors to take home with you. MY GOZO s the Il Hagar Museum, (Heart of Gozo), not only a museum but also a local cultural centre and it houses artefacts from the Basilica but also other historical objects and works of art. Opening hours are Mon-Sun, 9am-5pm. The Citadel Looking straight at St Georges Basilica, take the passage to the right and take a sharp right at The Prickly Pear Studio D’Art, con�nue to follow this street un�l you reach a small square called Savina Square, you will know you have reached the square when you see some an�que shops. En-Route from St George’s to Savina Square keep your eye out for a local lace maker whose name is Antoine�e, she will only be delighted to stop and talk to you and tell you about her work.

At Savina Square take a right back down along Republic Street and on the corner of the ﬁrst road on the le� you will see signs for the Citadel Cinema. This is the place where locals like to go and watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster. It also houses Gozo 360, a pictorial tribute to the best of Gozo’s culture and history. Taking the steep hill will lead you to the Citadel. The Citadel, originally built in 1500 BC is very much the jewel in Gozo’s crown and really is a historical gem that oﬀers 360 views of the Island. From the moment you enter through its arches, you feel like you are on a historical movie set. The Citadel has gone through a huge restora�on project over the last couple of years and has now been returned to its former glory. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze

Age, and in the Medieval era it was known as the Gran Castello. During Roman �mes it was a Roman municipality, independent of Malta and it was the islands administra�ve centre. By the turn of the 15th Century houses were built around The Citadel, forming the suburbs of Victoria that we know today. The Citadel and Gozo have had some very troubling periods in history. For two centuries, Gozo and the Maltese Islands were taken over by the Turkish and Berber corsairs, culmina�ng in a siege in 1551 by the O�oman Naval Force, who a�er unsuccessfully trying to a�ack Malta, saw Gozo as an easy op�on. Those Gozitans who thought that they were in safe surroundings in the Citadel were overcome and the Islands popula�on of 5000 was taken into slavery. It took 50 years to rebuild the Citadel as we see it today and...

MY GOZO ... repopulate the Island. During this period and un�l 1637, locals were required under law to sleep within the walls of the Citadel overnight for their own safety. The Citadel has been on Malta's tenta�ve list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998.

There are numerous museums you can visit in The Citadel including; The Museum of Archaeology, The Folklore Museum, The Natural Science Museum and The Old Prison.

The Citadella, the cathedral that sits within the walls of the Citadel was built between 1697 and 1711 The church’s feast is celebrated on the 15th August each year and is dedicated to the assump�on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Santa Maria, this is one of the biggest feasts held on Island. It is a baroque Cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafà, the Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina. It is said that it lies on the site where a Roman temple dedicated to Juno once stood. It is most famous for the remarkable trompe l'oeil pain�ng on its ceiling, which depicts the interior of a dome that was never built.

A�er visi�ng the Citadel, take the route back down the hill and take a le� onto Independence Square, known locally as It-Tokk. The square is dominated by the Banca Giuratale, built between 1733 and 1738, and was the ex seat of the municipal government of Gozo and currently the home of the ir-Rabat (Victoria) Local Council. The Maltese Tourism Oﬃce can be found on the square and it is home to a daily market where you can buy anything from fresh ﬁsh to a new sun hat.

The Theatre House was inaugurated in 1976 and raised its curtains for its ﬁrst Opera in 1977 and for the last four decades has been the home to leading operas and theatre on The Maltese Islands. With three levels of boxed �ers all around the auditorium and an upper viewing gallery it prides itself on having the largest indoor capacity on the Islands (1600), perfect acous�cs, and a very spacious orchestra pit. Elegantly adorned by the renowned Maltese ar�st Emvin Cremona, the Aurora theatre is truly an ar�s�c gem, priding a set of 60 original hand-painted works by the world-famous ar�st, which complement his intricate ceiling design, evoking the idiosyncra�c Gozitan lace in a typical 1970’s neo-baroque modernist language.

St Anne Chapel, Dwejra

Anne Marie is 28 and is a speech therapy consultant in her native city of Metz, France. Together she travelled with her finance Luc to Gozo for the first time in April this year. Anne Marie sent us in some amazing photos but we chose this because it is one of our favourite churches on the Island. St Anne Chapel is a great piece of architecture and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simplicity is simply stunning, it reminds us of a church you would find in Las Vegas! Designed by Joseph Mizzi from the local village of San Lawrenz, the Church was blessed in 1963 and the main alter depicts the young Virgin Mary. The feast of St Anne is celebtrated on the 26th July. Anne Marie and Luc enjoyed their time on Gozo so much that they plan to return to get married in 2020.

..................................... Steve is 55 and has been visiting Gozo for the last 30 years. After dreaming of owning a house on the Island for many years, he finally took the plunge with his wife Sandra after selling their print design business in Leeds, The UK. They have now been on Gozo since November last year and Steve took this picture of Ramla Bay during the winter when there was not a person in sight. Steve and Sandra regularly hike down the Valley from their home in Xaghra down to Ramla, something they only dreamed of 12 months ago! The statue you see in the picture is of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus and has been on the beach since 1881! and is testament to the religious devotion on the Island. Sandra says spring is the best time to hike on Gozo.

GOZITAN WEDDING FAIRYTALE A wedding abroad in a sunny climate can seem like a far fetched dream for many couples but getting hitched in a place where you are more or less guaranteed that rain will not ruin the big day is becoming very popular, and is a lot easier to organise than you think. Gozo is a dream wedding destination, you have everything you could possibly wish for, sun, beaches, some fantastic venues, plenty of Churches, fabulous food and stunning accommodation for your guests, all at a very reasonable price. One such couple, Stephanie and Patrick decided to �e the not a�er holidaying on Gozo, ...here they tell us

their story about the big day and share some hints and �ps about a wedding abroad. Stephanie and Patrick, ﬁrst of all congratula�ons on ge�ng married, where are you both from and how did you meet? Thanks very much! We are both from and live in Norwich, England and we meet whilst performing in a local musical. What prompted you to choose Gozo as your wedding des�na�on? Were you looking at other countries? We got engaged in Mallorca, so there was always a desire to get married abroad, but most countries have residency issues which would have meant having to sign the documents at home in England, and then having a blessing abroad. Stephanie had visited Malta when she was around 10 and remembered that there were a lot of English people living over there as well as English being very widely spoken. We looked into the possibility of

oﬃcially marrying on Malta and were excited to see you only had to be on the island 2 days before hand. We did a lot of research about Malta, and through this discovered Gozo. Something about it really stuck out to us, it seemed quieter, more peaceful and less developed than Malta, which appealed to us greatly as we are quite laid back people. We had already put a few things in place but came to visit Gozo for the ﬁrst �me in September 2017 and instantly fell in love with the island. We felt very at peace but also really excited about becoming married here. It felt completely right.e. Did it live upto your expecta�ons? Yes and then some! Gozo presented us with so many opportuni�es, everything was possible and everyone we met and contacted seemed so keen to help. We stayed on the island for a week over our wedding and the atmosphere was simply magical. Even when we were rushing around a�ending appointments, it all felt very right.

Stephanie & Patrick’s Gozo Wedding ...We had almost no stress whilst there and it was all down to the relaxed nature of the island Did you invite guests from the UK? Where did everyone stay? Did you plan any events during their stay? We both have very small families, and a close group of friends, so we were delighted that we were joined by 11 guests who stayed with us in a rented villa for the whole week. We stayed at The Hamlet Villa, in Ghasri which gave us all plenty of space to relax. We made sure that everyone came back to the villa for dinner which was such a wonderful experience. We'd given our guests lots of informa�on beforehand about places on the island to visit, and it was lovely as they o�en went oﬀ to explore. We did take everyone out to visit the Citadel at night as it was something we had done ourselves in September and really wanted to share that with our li�le group.. Tell us all about the wedding day, Transport to the venue? Ceremony? And recep�on? What was on the menu?

MY GOZO In the early planning stages we knew we didn't want this to be a typical wedding and we really wanted to make use of the amazing loca�ons on the island. Everyone got ready at the Hamlet Villa which was wonderful for building the excitement. Stephanie and I went to the registry oﬃce in the morning to sign the paperwork and then came back to get ready with everyone else. For the whole day we had a minibus supplied and driven by the amazing Michael at Victory Garage, this was invaluable to us as we had several loca�ons to travel to throughout the day. Our ceremony was held at Ta Sopu tower in Nadur. We had permission from the local council as well as the wonderful people at the Din L-Art Helwa. The day before the wedding we'd had a major problem when our chair supplier let us down very last minute with a double booking, as you can imagine it was pre�y stressful for us, but we managed to borrow some cushions for us all to sit on at the tower, and it was perfect. We had a humanist ceremony conducted by Gail Debono, and the

relaxed atmosphere of us all sat on the floor, really added to the whole spiritual feel of the ceremony. It was very emo�onal for everyone. From there we were off to It Tokk in Victoria for snacks, whilst we also went to the Citadel for some photos. The food was fantas�c and our guests loved being on the terrace watching everyone walk around below. We wanted to show our guests more of Victoria so we walked through the streets and ended up in St. George's Square where we had drinks and ice creams! We really wanted to mingle with the local people and it was wonderful having people wish us well and congratulate us on our marriage. But our adventure wasn't finished there! In our minibus we then travelled to Dwerja. We had some great photos taken down in the inlet and then returned to the cliffs to watch the sunset and pop a bo�le of champagne. It meant a lot to Stephanie and I to watch the sunset, as we had been there 8 months previously planning our wedding and watching the sun go down. It was an incredibly special moment for us.

Stephanie & Patrick’s Gozo Wedding What month did you get married? A�er some research we picked May as it has a li�le of the summer heat, but enough of a cooling wind so as not to be too much for our English guests! It also has less of the rain that is o�en seen in September! Did you get any local help planning the wedding? We decided not to use any form of wedding planners, purely because we wanted full control over the day, and also because some of our ideas might have seemed a li�le crazy to most! Our photographer Ma� was a great resource when we met him in September as he not only suggested Maldonados but also Gail our celebrant. We hadn't initally thought of using a celebrant and we are so glad we did as she was simply wonderful and so suppor�ve of all our ideas. How easy was it ge�ng married on Gozo? Was there much red tape? Other than all our other stops on the island, the act of ge�ng married on Gozo was incredibly simple. Neville at the Public Registry Oﬃce was absolutely fantas�c at guiding us through the process both in person and also

MY GOZO via emails. Any problems or ques�ons we had regarding forms and such he was on hand to offer advice. Even if we had decided to have the official registrar marry us outside of the registry office, this s�ll would have been very easy to do and we were told all of the informa�on needed to make our decisions. Do you have any �ps to any couples thinking of ge�ng married here? Our biggest �p would be for couples to understand what they want from their wedding and then finding out whether Gozo fits that vision. Gozo is a very unique place, and weddings here take on a completely different feel to that of England, and even weddings on Malta. We did a lot of research and also felt it was vital to visit Gozo to get a feel for the pace of life. When we came here, we felt at peace, in love and that there wasn't a single other place on earth that we wanted to be when saying our vows. It's also worth no�ng that not all suppliers will reply straight away. Nowadays with the way life is with the internet we always expect and immediate answer, it took us a few weeks to realise that it's different in Gozo and people won't respond to queries straight away. Ini�ally we found it a bit confusing, but to be

honest, this way of thinking and general way of life has very much rubbed off on us both, and back in England we now find things to move far too fast and chao�cally! Gozo is more laid back, less stressful, less complicated. If that sounds like you, then definitely get married there! What is your favourite memory of the wedding? Our wedding was unlike anything that either of us, nor our guests had ever experienced, and that in itself is the best memory to take away. Our wedding was an adventure; travelling about the island, cha�ng to the locals, experiencing everything that Gozo had to give to us, and taking it with both hands. Gozo has given us a sense of contentment, love and peacefulness we never thought we could have. It's made us both think differently about the way we live our lives, so much so, we are now having serious considera�ons to move to Gozo. The experience we had and the life lessons we have learned, are more than just a memory they are the best wedding gi� we could have been given.

LIVING THE GOZITAN PROPERTY DREAM Buying a property overseas is a dream for many people and this became reality for Esther Laferty and her husband Stuart...

wo summers ago, my husband Stuart and I flew to Malta armed with maps and high hopes. We had decided to take the plunge and begin the search for a small apartment in which we would spend as much time as possible until we were able to live over here full-time. Now, it’s one thing to holiday in a place and lose your heart, and quite another to look more questioningly through eyes that would like to stay forever. And it’s one thing to read every book and research every village on-line with careful calculations, a highly-sharpened pencil and a clear head, but for a final pinpoint there’s nothing like feet on the ground. We tied our laces and booked our flights. Although Malta was, originally, very much in consideration, Stu had felt from the outset that Gozo was the place. As the ferry pulled away from Cirkewwa and we were encompassed by the calm blues of the sea

and the sky, the slowing of the pace of life was almost tangible. By the time we passed the startlingly turquoise waters of Comino’s Blue Lagoon on the right, bursting with the laughter of a merry gaggle of boats on a hot sunny day, the worries of the world – or that tiny fraction of these that we carry ourselves – had slipped from our shoulders. We knew then that Gozo, a drop of gold and green which with its cut-out cliff edges could be a piece of paradise dropped into the azure sea long ago, was the place for us. It was Gozo, after all to which the Greek nymph Calypso lured Homer’s hero Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and where he stayed entranced for seven years. Legend has it that he was seduced by Calypso, but I suspect that Gozo itself was the main attraction. By the time the ferry slid into Gozo’s small port of Mgarr, life seemed infinitely simpler. Above the square stone buildings that line the harbourside paying homage to a North African architecture, the spires and dome of Ghajnsielem village stand tall. It’s a wonderful welcome every time. From the harbour, tourists were taking the hop-on hop-off bus to follow a well-trodden trail across this

‘boutique’ island, to explore its dramatic coastlines; the secret inland sea, Victoria’s magnificent citadel and the Ggantija Temples. We however had a very different plan: intensive house-hunting gives an even more thorough overview of the island! We scoured Gozo with dedication, sometimes with Rowan Carbone from ReMax whose recommendation for Maldonado’s restaurant was an absolute winner, but most often in the company of David Pace and Fiona Keeling, the team from the award-winning Move2Gozo Estate Agency with whom we found and fell in love with the village of Gharb. David Pace is imbued with friendly Gozitan charm and his enthusiasm bursts from bright eyes. Half English, he laughs that he has an English head and a Gozitan heart, and his knowledge of people and places and his stories of childhood on the island could keep you entertained through a second siege of Malta. Fiona grew up in South East England and has been visiting Gozo, where she met David, since 1976 to switch off from the fast pace of a London life. They lived in England together before moving back to Gozo with bohemian flair via rural France. In her previous career, as a collector of and trader in vintage handbags and fashion, Fiona provided the inspiration for Madonna’s iconic conical bra, paraded throughout the 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour, a story she’ll perhaps tell you herself. Over the space of five days, Stu and I visited more than forty properties scattered across the island, and a number of spots and views caught our imagination. We loved a delightful two-bedroomed rooftop apartment with 360° views, in Fontana a village just south of Victoria on the road to Xlendi, where the natural springs keep the valley green even in the fiercest summer heat. An apartment in Sannat, still in shell-format, with a stunning panoramic vista towards the Ta Cenc cliffs to the sea beyond caught our attention, and we found a tucked-away first floor flat above San Blas bay where the steep descent begins to hidden red sands below. It was the village of Gharb though on the furthest edge of the island (Gharb actually means west in Arabic) that stopped us in our tracks. Here we found the perfect place to put down our cases for the long term. With a view from the balcony of the Ta Pinu basilica standing proud in the Ghasri valley and glimpses of the sea from windows on the other side, the recently-renovated apartment offered us a space and style we hadn’t expected to be able to stretch to. We made an offer and it was accepted. We were on our way. In the Maltese islands, when you put an offer on a house, you should expect to place a deposit and sign a ‘Promise of Sale’ within a matter of days, although the final sale date can be sometime ahead. We were happy to follow a relaxed timeline that suited both us and the sellers and moved in the following February, a time of year when Gozo is gloriously green, buffeted by fresh breezes and tempestuous waves beneath the ever steady blue sky. We were home.

Although understated in typical Gozitan style, its tall arched doorway exuded a warm light and energy. Stepping down into the restaurant to dine beneath a stone arched ceiling, the atmosphere was both lively and intimate, the playlist pitched mellow yet with a light-hearted energy. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient, and the dishes, including sea snails, were delicious Mediterranean flavours with an enticing experimental twist, presented with stylish flair. We’re already salivating in anticipation of our next visit!

Post Brexit news has not dampened enthusiasm for British buyers to purchase holiday homes or relocate to the Island’’. Buying a Property. By law, all immovable property transac�ons must be transacted through a Malta Notary Public and be registered with the Public Registry. The Notary is usually appointed by the buyers but has a duty of care to both par�es. The process on Gozo is very straigh�orward. Once a property has been selected and we have nego�ated a price agreement, along with any special condi�ons, between you and the seller, an appointment is set with the Notary to prepare and sign the Preliminary Agreement or what is commonly known as the 'Konvenju' or 'Promise of Sale (POS)', which legally binds both the purchaser and the vendor to conclude the transac�on within an established period of �me, subject to any agreed condi�ons. On agreement to the terms of contract and signing of the 'Promise of Sale' you will typically be required to pay a deposit of 10% of the agreed price and also 1% provisional stamp duty due on the sale (but see current stamp duty excep�ons below), the outstanding balance of both would be due immediately prior to the signing of the ﬁnal deed. It is advisable therefore to ensure that you have the necessary funds lodged directly with the Notary's client account in Malta, some days prior to the signing of the POS. During the ‘Promise of Sale’ Term The Notary Public carries out the necessary searches to verify legal �tle and to ensure that there are no outstanding debts, hypothecs or liens on the property. The Vendor will complete all special requirements e.g. complete any outstanding works, as agreed with buyer and/or as specifically s�pulated in the POS. The Vendor is also obliged to supply, or commission if one does not exist, an EPC (Energy Performance Cer�ficate) report for the property. These cer�ficates are valid for 10 years from issue. The Purchaser should complete all the special requirements e.g. organise any bank loan, check on building permits, etc. as agreed upon with seller and s�pulated in the POS. It is important to be aware that the deposit is forfeited in favour of the vendor if the purchaser does not appear on the final deed without a valid reason at law. During this en�re period move2Gozo, as part of their service, are on hand to guide and assist in any queries, concerns or issues the purchaser or the vendor may have in rela�on to comple�ng the contract. move2Gozo has very good rela�onships with all the leading banks on the island and can also assist you in se�ng up mee�ngs with the bank of your choice. They also offer project management or full turnkey services for any renova�on works you may need to carry out on your new property. This service is offered exclusively to clients who have purchased through move2Gozo. Once all the mandatory requirements of the agreement have been met, a date is set for the actual signing of the Final Deed. This can also be before the end of the 'Promise of Sale’ term if both par�es agree. The contract signing will usually take place at the office of the Notary Public or at a venue jointly agreed by the buyer and seller and the Bank, if a bank loan is involved. The final deed is read and agreed upon and the balances due will be paid accordingly. These are; balance of the selling price to the vendor; the balance due to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue for stamp duty as well as notarial fees. The keys to the property are then handed over and you become the new owner of the property. The Notary public registers the contract with the Public Registry. Expenses Incurred When Buying A Property! Stamp Duty 5% duty on documents is calculated on the purchase price of the immovable property. This rate is reduced to 2% if the immovable property is in Gozo and the purchase is completed prior to 31 Dec 2018. If the Buyer is an EU Ci�zen declaring on deed that he/she shall reside in the property being purchased as his sole ordinary residence, then the preferential rate of 3.5% (not relevant during 2% discounted period above) is applied on the first €150,000 of the price. In respect of transfers of immovable property, made before the 31st December 2018, no duty shall be chargeable on the first €150,000 of the aggregate value of the considera�on

MY GOZO paid for the acquisi�on of such property, provided that this is the first immovable property acquired inter vivos by such person. No stamp duty is charged on the cost of any furniture or other movables declared in the contract of sale. Promise of sale agreements have to be registered with the Inland Revenue Department and 1% provisional duty (or 0.4% if the discounted scheme is s�ll valid) is payable at this stage on the contract value of the property being transferred. The provisional duty is offset against the final duty due on the final deed, or is refunded in case the deal fails to materialise Notarial Fees Notarial fees, paid for by the purchaser, are typically between 1.5 to 2% of the purchase price for the immovable property. This may vary according to the volume of �tle research required but is calculated transparently and according to law using a public online calculator, which can be found on the Notaries of Malta website (www.notariesofmalta.org). Overall Buyer Costs in 2018 For property purchases which complete before 31 December 2018, the net expenses due to the purchaser should not exceed 4 % of the Immovable Property purchase price, so now is an excellent �me to buy. These expenses are expected to revert back to 7% in 2019. Gozo will be getting a new museum… Planning permission has been granted to redevelop the disused Boys’ Lyceum school, located along the main road leading up to the centre of Victoria into a museum and cultural centre for Gozo. The museum will be known as the ‘’Gozo Museum’’ and will bring together local historical collections that are currently found in smaller museums at the Cittadella. The new museum will include artefacts from the field of natural history, archaeology, folklore, art and ethnography. Visual arts will also be introduced. There will also be space for temporary exhibitions as well as the Gozo offices of Heritage Malta. A museum shop, cafeteria and a conference space are part of the project. Works will include the restoration of the 1950s modern architectural building which was designed by architect Joseph G. Huntingford. The sunken piazza at the back of the school will be rehabilitated to create a public open space.

The tendering process for a fast ferry service between Mgarr and Valletta is now complete and should be introduced as early as next year. This is welcome news and the service has been in urgent need for the past decade. It will hopefully bring more tourists to Gozo but also offer a quicker route to Malta for those Gozitans who must endure a long daily commute. There is still talk of a tunnel linking Malta and Gozo, but firm plans appear to have gone quiet! Now in their tenth year, The Gozo Tourism Awards celebrate the best of Gozitan tourism. This year’s winner of the coveted Gozo Tourism of the Year award was Manuel Sultana, barman at Café Jubilee in Victoria, Richard Galea, head waiter at Ta’ Philip Restaurant, was presented with the Gozo Young Tourism Worker of the Year Award.

Cultural Achievement Tourism Award was awarded to the Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organisation (XHRO). Well done to all winners and nominees. It is fair to say that Gozo is going through something of a renovation with many buildings and historical monuments being restored over the past 5 years. Two forgotten buildings will now be given a new lease of life following an agreement between Wirt Għawdex and the Gozo Ministry to restore two sites in Victoria – the Loġġja tal-Palju (Horse Racing Barrakka) in Republic Street and a 32-room World War II shelter complex at the Citadel.

Il-Loġġja tal-Palju, or the Horse Racing Barrakka, was built in 1733 in upper Racecourse Street, now Republic Street, from where the winners of horse races were presented with their prize. he Gozo Half Marathon is a firm favorite in the Gozitan sporting calander and this year celebrated it’s 42nd Edition this year. The Gozo Half Marathon was organised for the first time on the 6th February 1977, and at the time it was the first marathon held on the Maltese islands. The conception of the Marathon is credited to Fr. Anthony Refalo, who had got the idea aftrr seeing similar Marathons during his stay in Rome. Today, the Gozo Half Marathon is successfully coordinated by a group of young youths who are part of the Xaghra Youth Centre. In 1977, only 35 people took part in the marathon, a number which has risen to nearly 1000 with runners coming from not only the Maltese Islands but from across the world. A point-to-point race the route takes the runners through the beautiful Gozo countryside, passing the Islands Villages and enjoying the unique landmarks that Gozo is famous for. The Marathon starts in the iconic Village of Xaghra, home to the historic Ggantija temples and the stunningRamla bay then makes it way through Victoria, Sannat, Xewkija, Ghajsielem, Qala, Nadur and ends up again in the Xaghra Square. The total distance is 13.1 Miles but there are also options to run 8km,

4km, 2km, take part in a fun run or even an 8 mile walkathon. There is an option for all ages and abilities! This year’s Gozo half Marathon was won by Ethiopian Ethiopian Nuradin Shifa Mahamede, it was another bumper year for participants with over 1250 athletes taking part. Apart from the half marathon there was also an 8-mile race, 5km and 2km races for children, 13km and 5km walkathons and 5km and 2km family runs. The event attracted foreign athletes from 57 countries. The first Maltese man to cross the finish line was Drew Lang, while Josann Attard Pulis was the first woman to complete the half marathon. Dillon Cassar came first in the 13km race, while the women’s section was won by Roberta Schembri. Jacob Greengrass and Pamela Camilleri placed first boy and first girl overall in the 5km race respectively. In the 2km race, Isaac Bonnici placed first boy overall while Gozitan Leah Said placed first girl overall. TriGozo won the award for the club with most participants. Focus On Charity Work Throughout Gozo and across the world there are countless unsung heroes who are quietly dedicating their time to some wonderful charitable causes which benefit both the local and wider global communities. In this years My Gozo Magazine we want to thank some of these people, whose work has been highlighted on the My Gozo Guide Facebook page by our readers.

Jesus in Thy Neighbour is a missionary movement founded by Dun George Grima, a Gozitan priest which is this year celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary. Father Grima‘s missionary work stretches back to 1977 when he went on his first mission to Brazil where over the course of 10 years he helped to build homes for orphaned children in the Minais Gerais region of Brazil. Over the last 30 years Father Grima has worked tirelessly on projects supporting poor children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Brazil. Recent projects include providing teaching courses, food relief, the building of numerous schools, kindergartens and facilities for disabled children. These voluntary groups visited and helped the patients of the geriatric wards of Craig Hospital in Victoria and those of the Psychiatric hospital in Fort Chambray. The main functions of the society are to assist the sick and the elderly in every way and to help improve and increase hospital and home facilities available for the safety, welfare, comfort and convenience of the sick and the elderly in Gozo. The charity provides a number of different services, including meals on wheels service, special equipment supplies, hospital visits and occupational therapy. The charity currently has over 600 members and regularly holds car boot sales and other events throughout the year. The primary aim of this happy band of men and women is the safe re-homing of hundreds of animals who pass through their doors each year. It is now 41 years since Gozo SPCA was founded by a British resident Jane Sedgfield. She was concerned by the number of stray cats and dogs in Gozo and also at the difficulties of finding veterinary care for companion animals. The results of

her initiative and the work of many others who have followed in her footsteps over the years can be seen all around us today in greatly reduced numbers of stray dogs and feral cats. The Gozo SPCA have a busy social calander and hold regular events throughout the year, including regular car boot sales. The centre is in Victoria and relys on public support to keep it running. The group was founded by Dr Victor Calvagna and Mr Rennie Zerafa. Puttinu is a character created by Mr Philip Farrugia Randon and is an angel sent from heaven to take care of Toninu, a Maltese boy. Puttinu Cares employs the principle of solidarity. The charity relies on sponsors and generous donations from the public, who are participating regularly in fund raising activities. The team of volunteers provide help and support to children who need hospitalization in the Rainbow ward (Oncology ward)at The Mater Day Hospital. The support group offers guidance for parents in order to help them deal with what lies ahead and give them hope for a better future. The Gozo Committee was set up in September 2010 with the aim of increasing awareness of Puttinu Cares in Gozo and to be of support and guidance to Gozitans who are suffering from cancer and need treatment abroad. Thanks to the continuous extensive coverage and support offered especially by the local media, Puttinu Cares has throughout the years created a respectable image among its ever increasing supporters and donors. Sapana Indian Restaurant

Most of us like Indian cuisine and a change from the norm, Xlendi is home to the Islands only full service Indian restaurant, Sapana, located two paces from the sea. Lying behind the Citadel in a quiet part of Victoria you will find the wonderfully restored Brookies Restaurant & Music Bar which is now firmly back on the Gozitan restaurant scene. The owners have gone to great lengths to offer visitors a unique dining and drinking experience in extremely laid back surroundings. At Brookies you can feel the history that surrounds you. MY GOZO

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

Ftira Ghawdxija Instructions: Whilst travelling around Gozo and The Maltese Islands, on the menu of many snack bars and cafes you will see Ftira Ghawdxija, which literally translates as Gozitan bread. It is a delightful flat bread/pizza style snack that all of the family can enjoy. What makes the Ftira so special are the fresh ingredients that goes into it. From the potatoes to the fresh anchovies and tomatoes, all ingredients are locally sourced. You can also find Ftira topped with local sausage which is equally as delicious. Ingredients: For the dough: 600 grams bread flour, 3 tsp yeast, 2 tsp salt, 2tsp sugar 6 tablespoons olive oil, 320 ml warm water Toppings 2 large local tomatoes, 1 tin of anchovies, 3 sliced boiled potatoes, roughly 12 black olives, 1 clove of garlic, chopped basil, salt and pepper, olive oil.

-Prepare the dough first. -Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix. -Mix together the water and oil and slowly add to the dry mixture, mixing as you go along. -Knead the dough on a flat surface for about ten minutes until the dough is smooth. -Leave in a covered bowl in a warm area for at least 3 hours. -Once the dough is ready cut into 4 equal size pieces. -Preheat oven to 200oC. -Place some flour on a flat surface and with a rolling pin roll out in the shape of your tray. Roll the dough larger than your tray as the dough tends to spring back once placed on the tray. -In your tray add some olive oil -Place the dough onto your oiled tray. -On your ftira start by spreading some olive oil. -Lightly crush a few tomato slices and spread on your ftira. Add all the other ingredients but add the potatoes last. -Lastly add some salt and pepper. -Place your ftira in the oven for about 20 minutes until the edges of the dough looks golden brown. -Serve immediately.

MY GOZO

Bragioli A firm favourite in any Maltese household is Bragioli, which translates as Beef Olives. The joy of this recipe is that you don’t need the best cuts of meat to make a delicious meal. Thin slices of tenderised beef are stuffed with minced veal, herbs and flavourings and gently cooked in a tomato-based sauce. This can also be served as two meals in the traditional Maltese way with the cooking sauce paired with pasta as a first course. There are some excellent local restaurants that serve old style Gozitan dishes, including Il Kcina Ghawdxija in Xlendi. We recommend you at least try one real local dish whilst you are on Gozo and then try cooking it at home. Ingredients: For the sauce: 3 tbsp olive oil, 2 large onions, diced, 5 garlic cloves, crushed , 400 g tin tomatoes, 1 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves , ½ cup basil leaves, 2 bay leaves, 250 ml red wine, 500 ml water, salt and pepper .

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

Meat 6 thin slices of topside or round steak , 400 g minced veal 2 bacon rashers, diced , 2 garlic cloves, crushed , ½ cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley, 1 tbsp finely chopped oregano, 1 spring onion, finely sliced , ½ cup grated gbejniet (Maltese cheese), 2 eggs, beaten, salt and pepper

Instructions: -To make the sauce, heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onion and garlic. Fry until softened. -Add the remaining ingredients and leave to simmer while you prepare the bragioli. -Flatten the beef slices with a mallet and set aside. -Mix the remaining ingredients together well, seasoning with salt and pepper. -Place a generous tablespoon of mixture on each slice of beef, spreading out well. -Roll up and secure with toothpicks or tie with butcher’s string. -Place the rolls in the sauce and simmer for 1½ hours over low heat. -Serve immediately with local Gozitan bread.

CAPITAL

All roads lead to Victoria, the Capital. Otherwise known as Rabat to the locals, The Islands Capital is very much it’s heart beat. It is where people go to do their daily chores. If you need something, whether it be a fresh pepper, or a pump for your bicycle, Victoria will have it, and if they haven’t just ask a local and they will definitely know where you can get it. Victoria even has an opera house, The Aurora which has an extensive cultural calander.

Cathedral of the Assumption

An open air market takes place daily in IT Tokk, although you will need to be there early in the morning to get the fresh fish. Republic Street is the main thoroughfare and it runs through the centre of Victoria. Republic Street is flanked on both sides by banks, shopping arcades, bakeries, books shops, two Opera Houses and a Cinema. The Duke Plaza, houses Hog Cafe, fashion shops, and other stores. XLENDI

Xlendi, is a picture postcard bay located to the south west of the Island and is a firm favourite amongst Gozitans, Maltese and Tourists a like. Many people are attracted to Xlendi due to the Waterside setting of the many bars and restaurants that line the quayside. There is also a small sandy beach and excellent sunbathing spots located around the bay and plenty of water sports activities to keep all of the family happy including canoeing, banana boats, pedalos and diving schools. Self-Drive motor boats can also be hired as well as fishing trips organised, see page ...Xlendi is home to over 20 restaurants that serve up fresh fish caught the same day, pasta, pizza, Indian, Chinese, and excellent meat dishes. WHAT TO SEE AND DO As you would expect from a sea-front location, everything revolves around the water in Xlendi, hire a boat from Xlendi Pleasure Cruises and explore the bays around Xlendi or venture further a field to Comino or around the Island. Xlendi is home to several large caves including St Catherine’s Cave and Carolina's cave. Carolinas is found on the cliffs on the right hand side of the bay if you are looking out to the sea. The cave was once the property of Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria. In later years she founded the Augustinian Sisters on Gozo and donated almost all of her land, including the cave and other land in Xlendi to the sisters.

During the summer months the Sisters would reside in Xlendi and would bath in the cave that offered them privacy from other swimmers as it could only be reaches by private stairs. St Catherine’s Cave is located to the right of the bay, just as you are entering Xlendi Bay, it is a popular place for snorkelers and divers alike owing to the crystal clear waters found in and around the cave. During the 17th Century, people in fact lived around the cave and it received its name after a Church that was built above the site and the Saint whom the Church was dedicated to. Unfortunately the church is longer on the site. At the Head of the Bay you will find an old watchtower dating back to 1650, it was built on the order of Grandmaster Lascaris and stands 35 ft square at its base and 30 courses high. Although visitors cannot go inside the watchtower, it is currently being restored, but it is well worth the walk, for sun seekers there are some fabulous bathing opportunities around the tower. The Watch Tower can be reached by following the coastal path to the left of the bay through the Kantra Valley and by taking the bridge that connects the headland to the land. Il-Kantra is a valley found to the left hand side of the bay close to the watchtower. The name Kantra derives from Alcantara in Spanish-Sicilian. This is due to the odd shape of the valley that resembles a bow. Il-Kantra is home to many types of flora

In 1955 During British rule of the Maltese Islands several emergency mills were built that were capable of producing flour for the Islands if a Cold War was to break out. One of these mills was excavated in the cliffs behind The Mount Carmel Church, in Xlendi, and is the only one left intact on Malta and Gozo. The excavation of the mill was a huge undertaking, cumulating in an entrance tunnel some 30 metres long, and a 3 storey chamber that housed the grinding and milling equipment, thankfully the mill was never put into use, but there are plans to restore the mill to its former glory as most of the original equipment is still inside. The church in Xlendi is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and dates back to 1868. On the first Sunday of September each year a feast is celebrated in honour of Mount Carmel and it is a really enjoyable weekend to be in Xlendi. During the day water games are held in the bay, with the traditional 'gostra' a greasy pole that you have to climb to seize a flag, proving very popular.

Mgarr, Gozo’s port, is the gateway to the Island. Mgarr is a picturesque fishing village that hasn’t really changed much throughout the years. One of the most immediate sights will be the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto that sits high above Mgarr and is actually in the Village of Ghajnsielem, it is a gothic style church and was built 1924. In 2011 the church received a set of 8 new bells with the largest weighing 5.5 tonnes. Ghajnsielem celebrates its annual feast on the last Sunday in August.

Nadur is Gozo’s largest village with a population of just over 5000 people. Nadur means ‘’lookout’’ in Maltese and comes from the Arabic word nadara. Perched on a high hill with commanding views of Comino and Malta it is clear why Nadur was an ideal spot to look out for unfriendly enemies. Several watchtowers were built in and around Nadur , Ta’Kenuna Tower was built by the British in the 19th century and was used as a telegraph link between Gozo and Malta. From the tower you can see much of the Island and the views out towards the Comino channel are to die for. When the Knights of St John ruled the Island a tower was built by Grand Master Nicholas Cotoner and is known as Ta’Sopu tower. It is also called Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas Tower after the two bays it sits between. During the 1960’s a lot people from Nadur emigrated to the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, many of whom have now returned to the Village and their allegiances to the countries they emigrated to are shown in the flags hung outside their homes.

Macabre Carnival due to the outfits that are donned by the festival goers. Nadur is also home to The Nadur Wine festival. The dates for the Delicata Classic Wine Festival in Nadur this year, are 31st August-2nd September, the village will come alive as the wine festival gets underway at the Ġnien il-Kunsill. The festival will open at 7.00pm and the last wines will be served at 11.30pm before closing at midnight. Live entertainment every evening. Nadur also hosts a Christmas market that is a great spectacle and normally takes places on the first weekend of December. The focul point of Nadur is The Parish church which was built in 1760 and is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. The feast takes place on the 29th June each year. Nadur is home to the Kelinu Grima Maritime Museum. The beaches of San Blas Bay and Dahlet Qorrot are also reached via Nadur.

If you are looking to dine in a restaurant that has fantastic views of the Gozo Channel, Comino, Mgarr and the WHAT TO SEE AND DO Gozitan country side then Nadur is Outside of Gozo, Nadur is probably home to Fliegu, which means The most famous for it’s annual carnival Channel in Maltese. Upon walking into that takes place in February during the 5 the restaurant diners will be taken aback days that precede Ash Wednesday. The by the amazing views of the of Mgarr, carnival is known as the Grotesque or Comino, Malta and The Gozitan Coun-

tryside from both the dining room and the terrace. The menu is a good balance of both Mediterranean and local cuisine with meat and fish dishes with a twist. There are several places to eat in Nadur Village itself, for those looking for a light snack in the form of a Gozitan Ftira or pizza we recommend the Maxokk Bakery for an authentic taste of Gozo. MY GOZO

o the west of the island you will find one of the most visited places on the Maltese islands. As you travel through the beautiful village of San Lawrenz you will see signs for the Inland Sea, Dwejra and Fungus Rock. As you make your way down the winding road the full beauty of what lies ahead is only a couple of minutes away. Halfway down the road Fungus Rock and Dwejra should be in sight and you start to understand why this is well trodden tourist path. This area of Gozo, commonly known as Dwejra is the one that you will have seen pictured in all of the guidebooks thanks to The Azure Window which sadly collapsed into the sea in March 2017. Once you arrive in the car park, head down the short hill where a visitors centre can be found on the right hand side which provides lots of information about the local area. At the bottom of the hill you will be greeted by a serene Inland Sea, a lagoon type lake that has direct access to the sea via a

Inland Sea man made tunnel. Swimming and snorkelling is excellent and those brave enough may decide to put on their flippers and venture through the tunnel into the open sea but we recommend you take a boat trip and let the professionals guide you instead. Once through the tunnel you will see many natural rock formations that look like amongst others a human face and a crocodile. Boat trips normally last around 15 minutes and cost around 5 euros per person and are well worth it! The Inland Sea is characterised by the fishing huts that's surround the bay and have been passed down between family members over many years. Head back up the hill and to your right you will see the spot where The Azure Window, once proudly stood. This area is extremely popular with scuba-divers. Just behind the car park you will find St Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chapel, built in 1963, Special festivities are held every year on the 25th & 26th July

in honour of St Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s liturgical feast. If you are lucky you might even catch a wedding. In front of the Church you will notice a large rock located just off the mainland. This is called Fungus Rock and legend has it that the plants grown on it hold special medicinal powers. The Knights Hospitaller apparently discovered the fungus and used it as a styptic dressing for wounds and a cure for dysentery. The Knights so prized it that they often gave gifts of Gozitan Fungus to distinguished noblemen and visitors to the Maltese islands. Grand Master Pinto decreed the rock out of bounds in 1746; trespassers risked a three-year spell as oarsmen in the Knights' galleys. He posted a permanent guard there and even built a precarious cable-car basket from the rock to the mainland, 50 metres away. Gharb is a beautiful Village, located west of Victoria about a ten minute drive away. Gharb is one of the oldest Villages on the Island and derives it’s name from Arabic, although in Maltese it means ‘’West’’ and it is in fact the western most Village on the Island. Gharb started life as a small hamlet hundreds of years ago and was originally populated by farmers who worked the fertile land. Gharb is quintessentially Gozitian and it’s main square, with the church dominating, has been the scene of many a postcard throughout the years. The village is home to many traditional Gozitan industries and is still home to traditional lace and cotton makers. The Parish of Gharb is the second oldest Parish on Gozo, the current church, built in 1699 is dedicated to the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth. The feast is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in July. Gharb lies amongst some of the most scenic countryside on the Island, particularly at Dbiegi, the largest hill on Gozo. San Lawrenz is the only village named after it’s patron Saint and it is dominated by it’s Church which was consecrated in 1897. The feast of St Laurence is on the 12th August and the village is full of noise and color.

atmosphere, for reservations Tel: 2155 3855. Ta’Salvina’s, located on the main sqaure in Gharb is renowned for its local and Mediterranean cuisine, Tel: 2155 2505 for reservations. The Gharb Rangers FC Bar, located at 118 Triq il Knisja, is an institution in Gharb and has a fantastic roof garden where you can while away a summers evening. The bar serves excellent pizzas aswell as other well produced local dishes. Il Kunvent located in front of Gharb Chruch is also recomended for some great home made food and unique Pizza’s. In San Lawrenz you will find Tatita’s in the main square and is a very nice spot in front of the village church.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO Gharb is home to several quirky museums including, The Gharb Folklore Museum located on the main square. The Village also houses the Ta' Dbiegi Crafts Village, a must visit for any visitor looking to sample Gozo’s arts and crafts. In the limits of Gharb you will find the Basilica Ta’Pinu.

Xaghra, located to the North East of the Island is the second largest Village on the Island with a population of just over 4200 people. The village is perched on a high hill and has great views of much of the Island including Ramla Bay. In Maltese, Xaghra means ‘’wilderness’’, a term relating to its location on top of a hill. Many people believe that Xaghra was one of the inhabited parts of Gozo, and looking at the architecture of the village and its surroundings it is easy to understand why. The focal point of the Village is the Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church that stands today was built in 1815 and the church is covered in marble throughout. The Village feast is celebrated on the 8th of September and if you are on Gozo at the same time, a visit to the feast is a must. In the weeks prior to the village feast, the Xaghra Youth Centre organise the annual Xaghra Youth games, an annual event that revolves around the history of the village, Gozo and Malta and includes horse racing, the building of the Ggantija Temples, The Great Siege of 1565 and other events. If you are on Gozo around the 22nd August the games are a great family event.

MY GOZO As there is no airport on Gozo in order to get over to The Island then you will need to take an airport transfer and ferry. Victory Garage (www.victory-garage.com) and Mayjo Car Rentals both offer direct and indirect airport transfers. The advantage of a direct transfer is that you are picked up directly from the airport and driven onto the ferry and straight to your destination in Gozo. With an indirect transfer you will be transferred to the ferry terminal where you will leave your driver and go onto the ferry as foot passengers, you will then be picked up by another company on arrival in Gozo. Cost wise there is a difference, direct transfers cost circa €60 and an indirect transfer circa €45. Whether you enjoy exploring by foot, bike, car, boat, plane, or public transport, Gozo is one of the most accessible islands that you could visit. To get the best out of what Gozo has to offer we certainly advise hiring a car for at least a couple of days, expect to pay around €15-€25 Euros per day depending on make and model of the car/time of year. A great way to see the Island is by bus, unfortunately the Old Gozitan bus’s that used to be the character of the Island are no

On-board single tickets are €2 in the summer and €1.50 in the winter. Gozo Segway Tours offer a variety of tours around the Island, taking in historical sights as well as the local countryside. Tours start from €15 for a 1 hour 5km trip around Ta’Cenc, Sannat to €60 for a cross country route which takes 4/5 hours and includes lunch in a traditional bakery. Gozo is a watersports and in particular a Divers Paradise. Divers are drawn to Gozo due to the clear, warm waters, but also because of the variety of diving sites available with many caves, reefs and wrecks to explore. Gozo is often voted one of the best places to dive in the world. There are some excellent diving schools throughout the island and all of the diving schools on the island of Gozo adhere to the highest safety procedures. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver there are courses available for all levels. Diving is possible all year round and underwater visibility is more than 30 metres. The Ministry for Gozo has invested €20,775 on the 52 diving sites in Gozo since January 2014. A group of divers recently had a thrilling encounter with a gigantic Mola mola fish. With the appearance of an underwater blimp, the fascinating Mola mola, also known as an ocean sunfish, dwarfs the humans as they swim around it. Diver Erik van der Goot, who posted close-up footage on YouTube, said the ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’ occurred near Wied il-Mielah. One of the main advantages of diving in Gozo is that many of the dive sites are accessible from the shore. The dive schools on the island are generally led by well-qualified multilingual instructors who have many years experience of diving around the shores. If you are new to diving there are a few legal requirements that have to be taken into consideration. The youngest age that you can dive is 10 years old and under 18’s will require written a parent or

Over the past 15 years several ex Gozo Channel Ferries have been scuttled around Gozo and provide an excellent artificial reef for divers. The MV Xlendi was originally scuttled in 1999 in the waters off IX-Xatt, just to the West of Mgarr. The MV Xlendi sits on the bottom of the ocean, some 40 metres deep and what makes it fascinating to divers is that it is positioned up-side down. If you don't fancy donning a wet suit there are some excellent snorkelling sites and we highly recommend the Blue lagoon on Comino, Mgarr-IX-Xini, The Inland Sea and San Blas Bay. A great way to see the island is by hiring a self drive motorboat. It is possible to go around the island in a day, and is a great way to spend a day in the sun, take a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Xlendi Water Sports offer self drive boats out of Xlendi Bay. Various speed boats available are available on the pier in Xlendi as well as at their booking office in Marsalforn . Gozo is naturally rocky and is a hidden treasure for climbers with its numerous inland crags that are rarely visited by tourist to it's stunning sea cliffs offering long multi-pitch climbs for the more experienced climber. There are bolted sport climbs that are suitable for beginners up to experienced climbers and the island now boasts the longest roof climb in the world making Gozo a destination that can only grow in popularity for climbers. Gozo’s national symbol is the three hills and even though the highest point on the island is no greater than 450 meters above sea level there are a great number of cycling routes that offer a wide range of challenges. They lead through quaint villages, along quiet roads, peaceful hills, rough seaside tracks, picturesque valleys and historical sites. Hiking is one of the most relaxing and rewarding activities as Gozo has a special charm. If you are looking for peace and quiet there are a number of walks that take you along the tops of cliffs and winding valleys with stunning scenery and local treasures. XATT L’AHMAR One of the less well known spots on Gozo for swimming and sunbathing but what a well kept secret it is. It’s a divers paradise! Located near Għajnsielem to the South East of The Island, ge�ng there by car is a must. The man made pier makes for a good spot to jump oﬀ for those inclined, while salt pans and clay cliﬀ faces are ideal for those looking to laze around.

RAMLA BAY Arguably the best beach on the Maltese Islands. Ramla has everything, a huge family friendly beach, water sports, clear water and some great beachside restaurants. It does get busy in the summer especially during the weekend but it is worth it. Accessible by the villages of Xaghra and Nadur, Ramla is served by Bus No 302.

MGARR IX-XINI One of our favourites!. Located in the South of The Island and accessible via the Village of Xewkija, there is a small pebble pitch and excellent swimming facili�es. In 2015 Mġarr Ix-Xini was men�oned by CNN as one of the top 10 places to visit before they are changed forever. There is no public transport and a car is necessary. There is a mobile food van and an excellent sea-food restaurant.

MARSALFORN BAY A ﬁrm favourite with locals and tourists, Marsalforn is Gozo’s premier resort. There is a good sized sandy beach which is great for kids and an array of bars and restaurants to choose from. To the right of the bay is GħajnBarrani, the stretch of cliﬀs from Marsalforn to Ramla, a sunseekers paradise. Bus No’s 310 and 322 74 serve Marsalforn.

LIFES A BEACH! SAN BLAS BAY We love this place and shouldn’t really be telling you about it as we want to keep it a secret but here you go...this deligh�ul small beach is pre�y much paradise personiﬁed and you have to visit it. Access is via a steep hill and the surprise at the bo�om is worth the walk. The sand is red and easy on the feet and the water crystal clear. There is a small cafe that serves drinks and snacks. San Blas is accessible via The Village of Nadur and is served by Bus No 303.

XWEJNI & QBAJJAR BAY Xwejni and Qbajjar are two bays next to each other in between Marsalforn and The Salt Pans. Both have small pebbly beaches and at Xwejni you can rent sun loungers and parasols, both have restaurant, cafe and bar facili�es and the swimming is excellent, especially for snorkelling and diving. Bus No 310 serves both bays.

XLENDI Xlendi is another one of our favourites. Whilst the beach at Xlendi is small, its ample enough for children and there is plenty of sunbathing space do�ed around the bay with people choosing to swim oﬀ the rocks on the le� hand side of the bay. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you watered and fed. Bus No’s 306 and 330 serve Xlendi.

HONDOQ A ﬁrm family favourite with locals and tourists a like. There is a a small sandy beach and crystal clear waters which makes it a great sport for swimming and snorkelling. During the summer months Hondoq is a great place to have a BBQ, especially during the evening. Located directly opposite Comino it has great views of the Gozo Channel. Accessed via the village of Qala you need a car or two wheels to get down to Hondoq which is at the bo�om of a steep hill.

Other notable places to swim are Dwejra, The Inland Sea, Dahlet Qorrot and The Blue Lagoon on Comino.
