Hi and Welcome to the 4th edition of My Gozo Magazine, your definitive Gozo Salt Below, Pans By The ChrisAurora & Terry Opera Camilleri guide to everything you need to know about Gozo. This is my 4th year House in Victoria. producing the magazine and this has only been possible due to the continued support I receive from my wonderful sponsors and readers from across the globe who fill me with the encouragement, passion and desire to produce what I hope is an insightful and fun magazine to read. I also owe a debt of gratitude to The Maltese Tourism Association/MTA/ Visit Malta for their support, of which it is much appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the hotels/b+b’s/farmhouses/business’s on The Island who allow me to distribute the magazine. I would also like to thank Teri Hardy for her invaluable passion and contribution. 2014 was an extremely busy year for Gozo. There was much excitement during the summer when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie set up camp in Mgarr Ix Xini to film their most recent Hollywood blockbuster, By The Sea, which is due out 2015/16. I am sure everyone will be really interested to see some familiar Gozitan sights. The fact that Brangelina decided to film on Gozo is testament to the Maltese Film Industry and the encouragement of The MTA/Visit Malta to foreign film makers to film on The Islands.

If you appreciate Craft Beer making then I am sure you will like the beer that is made at The Islands first brewery, Lord Chambray, which is now open in Xewkija. The brain child of an Italian entrepreneur, Lord Chambray produces beer with a local influence, names include, San Blas, Golden Bay, Fungus Rock and Blue Lagoon. Pop into their brewery and taste for yourself the delightful beers! There has been real interest in property on the Island recently, and coupled with the strong sterling, house buyers are flocking to the island to snap up its stock. I have been lucky enough to visit many places in the world, and I always take in an interest in the local property, I have however failed to find anywhere that offers the craftsmanship that goes into Gozitan/Maltese housing, the variety and standard of housing/apartments is truly outstanding. Things to do in GOZO There is so much to see and do on Gozo that a day trip is not enough, that’s for sure, you have to spend at least 7 days on the Island to get the most out of your stay, and even then it’s not enough, here, we give our tips on what to see and do whilst on Gozo...

Gozo is home to the Ggantija Temples, a world heritage site which are found in the Village of Xaghra. Ggantija, meaning giant in Maltese is a neolithic, megolothic temple complex dating back to c3600-2500 BC, making the temples more than 5500 years old. For toys past and present, visit 10 Gnien Xible St, Xaghra, Open June/End of September 10:30am - 1pm and 4pm 6pm. Mon - Sat. The Gharb Folklore Museum depicts daily life in Gozo of yesteryear. The museum is a showcase of traditional life and includes the printing press used for Gozo’s ﬁrst newspaper plus a collection of old tools and clothes. Address: - 99 Pjazza il-Knisja, Gharb. Opening Hours: Mon to Sat: 9.00a.m. - 4.00 p.m.; Sunday: 9.00am - 1.00 p.m Ninus Cave is a fabulous cave with stalactites and stalagmites located at the back of a private house on 15 January Street in Xaghra. The cave was discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa. Open daily between 8am and 18:00pm. Not too far from Ninnus Cave you will ﬁnd Xerri’s Grotto, an underground cave discovered in 1924 by the owners Grandfather who discovered the cave whilst digging a well. Malta and Gozo in travel magazines/programmes etc, it’s more than likely that the picture showing off the Islands beauty will be that of Dwejra and the famous Azure Window, a spectacular natural rock formation, featuring a natural arch. Next to Dwejra, you will find The Inland Sea, a beautiful natural lagoon , popular with swimmers and divers a like. A natural man made tunnel leads to the open sea and it is possible to take a 15 minute boat trip on one of the many fishing boats.

Salt Pans...To the North West of The Island, close to Qbajjar Bay, you will stumble across the remarkable salt-pans, Gozo’s commercial source of fresh seasalt. Laid bare in all their glory, the salt pans are a strong testament of Gozo of old, one that has used it’s natural resources to make a living. Pick up a fresh bag of salt while you are there.

The most popular and largest beach is Ramla Bay, located in between Xaghra and Nadur. Ramla is a beach lovers paradise and is great Whether you are visiting in for this kids. 10 Festa - Time, Gozitans and

the Maltese do Festa’s better than anyone. If you are on the Island whilst The Patron Saint of a Village is being celebrated, you have to go. The Villages comes to life with a festival of light, food and culture. Churches are lit up, ﬂags are ﬂown and each Village trys their best to out do their rivals. Two of the biggest festivals are held in The Capital, Victoria, St George’s celebrates it’s Patron Saint on the 19th July and The Feast of Santa Maria is celebrated on the 15th August every year. The Capital really does come to life with various activities happening to coincide, including Horse Racing along the Streets.

The Qala International Folk Festival takes place in September and includes music, dance and costumes in the traditional form. (18th-20th September). If you love light then you have to head to Gozo on the 16th October for the Festival of Lights, Ghar Ilma hill is lit up with hundreds of lanterns and it is a great sight to see. October see’s Opera season in full force, Gozo is lucky to have two opera houses and both the Astra and Aurora Theatres play home to some beautiful performances. Festival Mediterranea is held between 29th October and 28th November and celebrates Gozo’s heritage, art and music. Not many countries celebrate Christmas as much as Gozo and the Island really does pull out all of the stops, this includes live cribs, Christmas markets and a full mock up of Bethlehem in the Village of Ghajnsielem, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Opera Lovers won’t be disappointed when they visit Gozo as the capital Victoria is home to two. My Gozo were lucky enough to be given a guided tour of The Aurora Theatre House, which was inaugurated in 1976 and raised its curtains for its first Opera in 1977 and for the last four decades has been the home to leading operas and theatre on The Maltese Islands. The Aurora theatre is solely run by volunteers who share a mutual passion for live opera, theatres, culture and music. It was this dedication and passion that saw members of the Leone Philharmonic Society come up with an audacious plan in 1971 to have an Opera House on Gozo. After five years of careful planning, building, multiple challenges and sheer grit and determination, The Aurora Theatre was born. It inherited its name from a former Aurora Theatre (also owned by the Leone Philharmonic Society), which served as the only theatre owned by a philharmonic society on the island at that time. The Aurora Theatre as we know it today is situated on Republic Street in the Centre of Victoria. It prides itself on having the largest indoor capacity on the Islands (1600), perfect acoustics, and a very spacious orchestra pit. Elegantly adorned by the renowned Maltese artist Emvin Cremona, the Aurora theatre is truly an artistic gem, priding a set of 60 original hand-painted works by the world-famous artist, which complement his intricate ceiling design, evoking the idiosyncratic Gozitan lace in a

typical 1970’s neo-baroque modernist language. With three levels of boxed tiers all around the auditorium and an upper viewing gallery, it is the only recent theatre on the islands, with specific architectural requirements to host operas. The Leone Committe’s dream was achieved in 1976 and only three months after the official opening, Gozo saw its first opera, The opera of Giacomo Puccini, Madame Butterfly and it changed the Opera landscape on the Maltese Islands, giving a boost to the Opera Scene on both Gozo and Malta. The bar had now been raised. Gozo saw a new tourist coming across the Gozo Channel, The Maltese Opera Lover, who came in their thousands. As well as playing host to Madame Butterfly, The Aurora has seen some great conductors grace its stage over the years, including, the Italians Alberto Leone and Giovanni Veneri, Maltese conductor Joseph Sammut and Gozitans Joseph Vella and Colin Attard, the current resident conductor of the theatre. The names of world famous people within Opera have given the general public much pleasure over the years, including Eva Marton, Raina Kabaivanska, Michéle Crider and Maria Guleghina (sopranos), Gloria Scalchi, Sylvie Brunet, Katia Angeloni and Tea Demurishvili (mezzosoprano), Nicola Martinucci, Franco Farina and Neil Shicoff (tenors), Franco Giovane... 18

...Marzio Giossi, Luigi de Corato and Juan Pons, (baritones) as well as Mario Luperi, Ivan Tomasev, and Martin Gurbal, (basses). During the first two decades, the theatre also showed films on a regular basis while to date, it still provides Gozitans with theatrical events, variety shows and other forms of entertainment. Amongst these it is worth mentioning the Ballet de Paris, which marked the first professional ballet company on a Gozitan stage. Today the Aurora Opera House has become Gozoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top venue for high level theatrical performances brought over from Malta for the benefit of entertaining the Gozitan population. Apart from that, it has also evolved into a production house of its own repute, producing the annual opera, alongside symphonic concerts, an annual Christmas variety and numerous dance shows. It also hosts a number of foreign productions and serves as a permanent house of dance schools tallying its artistic footprint to include classical ballet, traditional flamenco, jazz and contemporary dance and theatre education. As the theatre enters a new phase, those volunteers behind it are continuously looking to improve and maintain high performance levels from an artistic perspective, but also from a building restoration perspec

tive. Over recent years, Aurora has supported environmental initiatives, as well as paying close attention to its social responsibilities. Events include charity concerts/shows as well as the restoration of the theatre roof, a major eco-friendly project which was funded through the Ministry of Gozo/Eco Gozo/EU. Christmas is a truly Magnificent time to visit Gozo. With summer long gone, The Island really does pull out of all of the stops to celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. One of the most authentic real live Villages of Bethlehem is found in Ghajnsielem. Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem is an animated nativity village that is spread over 20,000 sqm and brings to life one of the most celebrated stories in the world. Each year over 150 actors come together to put on a live version of what life was like in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. Attractions include the carpenter and blacksmith's dwellings, the bakery, a market which sells natural fruits, fresh fish and vegetables, a tavern, a local crafts area and a barn. All of the dwellings are inhabited and daily lives of the Villages are acted out in an authentic manner. The tavern offers local wine and food and there is also a bakery where fresh bread is made and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic. The star attraction is of course the live grotto where you will find baby Jesus in the caring hands of Mary assisted by Joseph with a donkey and a cow close by. Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem also includes re-enactments of Mary and Josephs ‘trip’ from Nazareth to Bethlehem on the 6th of December (inauguration ceremony) as well as the Adoration of the Magi on the Epiphany. It really is a must visit if you are on the Island during December, it attracts close to 100k visitors and is free to enter. Please note that the animated section of the nativity village only takes place during the weekend. During December you will see several live cribs in the Villages on the Island, notably in Xaghra where more than 27 large artisanal cribs can be found in the homes of Villagers, and at The Village Parish Church. Other attractions include The Gozitano Agricultural Village which is transformed into a Christmas Market, Dinja tat-tfal, which is a childrens fun park held at the Gozo Sports Complex, an Artisan Christmas Village in St George’s Square, The Karmni Grima museum during the month of December has a unique antique crib on show, there are various choir concerts, a cribs exhibition held at the Ministry of Gozo, Fun Train Tours organised by Calypso Trains and The Il Hagar, Heart of Gozo Museum have several permanent exhibitions that are focused on Christmas including the display of set of clay and Papier-mâché statuettes (up to 29 cm high) by artist Ġużeppi Giusti (1906-1993) whose work has been hailed as being of the finest quality. CARNIVAL Carnival Time is a special time on Gozo, for one weekend in February, the Village of Nadur comes to life and transforms itself into a sea of vibrant color, music and all round fun. Nadur is Gozo’s second largest town and during carnival it feels like the centre of The Islands, if your looking for fun then this is the place to be. The Nadur Carnival is however different, there is a dark, macabre feel to it and the rules are simple, there are none...it is known as the spontaneous carnival or “karnival spontanju” in Maltese because people can basically turn up as they feel, it is what makes it the successful event that it is and people are drawn from all over the Maltese Islands to attend and even further a field. Costumes vary from grotesque or macabre to irreverent and comedic. There isn’t an organising committee and no official event planned (Apart from the weekend before) During the course of the carnival you will meet some weird and wonderful characters, don’t be afraid, embrace it and join in. The spontaneous carnival starts after sunset, although most people make a day of it. The party continues into the early hours and there are plenty of street food and drink vendors. During the day time there are a variety of events, including dancing, sketches, costumes, colorful floats and the traditional kukkanja. Although the spontaneous carnival attracts a older crowd during the evening, there are plenty of events during the day time to keeper the younger carnival goers pleased. On the Xewjika Industrial Estate, in the middle of The Island, you will find a company that is synonymous with the agricultural heritage that Gozo is well known for. Magro Brothers, have been producing commercial products since 1934 and besides tomatoes and their renowned canning operation, Magro Brothers are today involved in dairy products and in a vast range of award winning traditional craft food. One of the new concepts that Magro have introduced over the last couple of years has been their own cheese making plant, it has been an 80 year wait to introduce cheese-making into the Magro family but one worth waiting for. One of the aims of the new plant was to re-introduce and bring back to life traditional Gozitan and Maltese cheeses and irkotta, many of which had been lost with

time, for one reason or another. The founding members of Magro Brothers, Wigi, Guzeppi and Manwel Magro had a vision to produce evaporated Milk when they first acquired milk-processing machinery back in the 30â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s but the spread of undulant fever across the Maltese Islands led to the trading of fresh milk being banned by the relevant authorities. It was for this reason that the brothers turned their attentions to tomato processing. Magro Brothers put a lot of time and investment into researching the historical significance of cheese and irkotta making on the Maltese Islands and this research confirmed their belief that there was a strong appetitie for high quality dairy products. Many Towns and Villages had their own artisan cheese making

workshops, selling their home made produce in local markets. The famous Gbejna cheese that you will find across the Islands, only survived because the local farmers were able to turn the excess unpasturised fresh milk into cheeselets. Fast forward 80 years and after 15 years of research by John Magro to recreate authentic and traditional products, Kasificju was born. Kasifcju was the name given to the new production plant, deriving from the name of dairy farms in Gozo that were home to artisan cheesmakers. Magro Brothers have married old techniques with new technology in the production of their cheese related products. Where possible they are made using traditional artisan methods, although all products are made with pasturised milk, therefore guaranteeing a safer product. All of the dairy products carry the name Hanini which was born in 2010 and is a Gozitan gourmet dairy brand which presents convenience through innovation and proudly offers a great taste experience invoking traditions & heritage. Depending on the season, you will be able to watch the infusion of oils and vinegars, the pressing of sun-dried figs, a range of antipasti and sun-dried tomatoes in oils, succulent fruit jams and pure Gozitan honey and the making of cakes and puddings. Guest Writer, Teri Hardy has been exploring The Arts and Crafts revolution which has hit the Island and meets four very inspiring people. Teri Hardy was born and raised in Carmel-bythe-Sea, California and began cooking at an early age, even before she could read. She is extremely passionate about food and travel, which she has been fortunate to combine for much of her life. For several years she lived in the Mediterranean region of Europe, where she worked for a period of time in a private restaurant on the island of Ischia, Italy. She travels off the beaten path, and by meeting the local women she has been able to study authentic cuisines by cooking with them in their kitchens. During her travels, she has met many remarkable cooks, had interesting and unusual experiences and has tasted a large variety of unfamiliar and delicious foods. From these experiences she has developed her own collection of unique recipes, always adhering closely to authentic ingredients and preparation. She has cooked on the sands of the Sahara; over campfires in Kenya and Morocco and Tunisia; on the shores of the Aegean Sea; on a traditional narrow boat on the canals of northern Wales; and in sailboat galleys in Italy, Greece and Mexico. For the past few years, she divided her time between Monterey, California and Gozo. She is currently working on developing recipes which best pair with True Vine's Petit Sirah wines, El Dorado county, California. The pleasures of dining have a long history of social as well as health benefits. Her emphasis is on healthy, delicious food of high quality, using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Meet The two ladies behind Bejta Artisan at the Ta' Nikol Gallery in Victoria How does one describe Bejta Artisan at the Ta’ Nikol Gallery? The work contained within is quirky, eclectic and affordable and bursts with creative art which is ever evolving. 26 local artists who live on Gozo exhibit their work here, and the small space is filled to the brim with colour, energy and whimsy. Owners Emma Victoria Morgan and Abi MacLeod greet everyone with a warm, friendly welcome and soon you feel as if you are chatting with old friends. The two first met when their children where at nursery together and began working together three years ago. The gallery hosts a “Knit and Natter” group which meets weekly, as well as occasional craft workshops. Children’s classes are also held for two age groups: ages 3 to 5 year olds in one class and 5 to 10 year olds in another class which are held every Saturday and Monday. All the crafts have an element of recycling and a different project is offered each week. There is also a Christmas Bazaar the middle of December in an historic townhouse on Republic Street. The best way to find your way to the gallery: “Left and left at St. George's Church”. Take the lane on the left side of the church (Charity Street) and take the first left alleyway off Charity Street (43, Triq Mons, Guzippi Ferrugia). Watch for the signpost to direct you to this treasure trove of delights. Recently, Abi and Emma completed the “Tree of Life” project at Happy School. The project was funded by “Kreattiv”, a funding program managed by the Culture and Local Government under the Ministry for Tourism. It encour-

ages schools and creative practitioners to cultivate student engagement and motivation which promotes learning through cultural expression and appreciation. In 2014, out of 54 applications submitted, 18 grants were awarded. Only one grant was given to Gozo to Abi and Emma for the 'Tree of Life' project. Together they brainstormed and came up with the concept, which was children led. The tree grew and evolved from the children’s creations and now graces the interior courtyard of the school. Emma Victoria Morgan, Upcycle Artist, is tall, easy going, and a friendly, very happy girl. One is always at ease in her company. She began working in theatre in the UK, including the West end, at age 15, and went on to study drama at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, specialising in Stage Management and Wardrobe. Her past work as a Stage Manager for P&O Cruise Lines (during which she visited every continent except Antarctica) brought her to Gozo, where her husband’s grandfather had lived since the 1960’s. Once here, they soon knew this was the place for them and have now been here for nine years. Her background in theatre is the inspiration for staging exhibitions. Her favourite task is dressing the gallery . . . give her a hammer and new work to display and she is very happy. Emma is inspired by objects people give her. After observing an object for awhile, it becomes apparent to her what it will become. She has always been creative and the gallery provides a child free work space, allowing her to get back to designing. In her free time she enjoys walking, baking and cooking, reading and spending time with her two boys, a puppy, two cats and a hamster. Her dream is to carry on creating and running Bejta Artisan at the Ta' Nikol Gallery. Though she is short in stature, her personality is larger than life and bursting with energy. Filled to the brim and overflowing with joy, energy and passion - this is one powerhouse of a woman! Friends are always adding to her collection, dropping off bits and bobs at Bejta Artisan at the Ta’ Nikol Gallery, a wonderful space filled with electric art she and Emma Victoria Borg co-own. Her inspiration comes from everything: religious icons and figures, paraphernalia, patterns and the objects themselves. In her free time she devotes her energy to creative things and to her family. She is always on the go, much of the time spent outdoors at the beach and parks with her children. They make it a point to always take time to sit down together, to eat and talk about their day. She dreams of a larger version of the present gallery and to carry on what she is doing. “When I lived in the UK, I was part of an artists coop. The legal requirements and protocols plus cost of living and overhead limited creative freedom. Valerie Waring is full of bright friendliness and her warm personality is infectious. For several years she had visited Malta, where her daughter lived, and planned to move to there. Until she visited Gozo for a day . . . and one week later, in May 2014, decided to come to Gozo for six months to make hats. On Gozo she is living her dream and would love to remain on the island, living by the sea and making a success of her business. She is a milliner, creating hats, fascinators (which date back to Victorian times; the name comes from "fascinating the eye"), headbands and fabric flowers made from silk, satin, organza. In addition, she creates faux fur stoles. She draws inspiration from vintage 50’s glamour, beautiful things, weddings, flowers and nature and her style is determined by each individual client, incorporating their specific fabrics.

Valerie's vision: “To go as far as I can to learn as many skills as possible. I what to prevent millinery from slowly dying out and would like to someday take on an apprentice and share my knowledge and love of millinery." Until you spend time with him and he begins to open up. Perhaps he is saving his energy to put into the amazing wood objects he creates. His turned bowls are a thing of beauty and highly coveted. Paul is a wood turner and is always looking for wood, which is not abundant on the island of Gozo. “Most of my wood from the sea. If anyone has or knows of available logs or trees, I am willing to remove them and in return will reward you with a small turned bowl.” He and his sidekick, Johny, met in the Mill Room and immediately got on. Both are a bit eccentric and began going for walks together looking for wood. "He is a great walker and has become my wood finder and collector, as well as becoming a very good friend and totally invaluable to me. His house is filled with an eclectic collection of found objects and works of various Gozitan artists. I call him 'The Gozo Treasure Finder.'”

The available wood on Gozo is eucalyptus, tamarisk, Carob and pine, all of which he recycles and reuses. He uses only found wood and never imported wood, which keeps his work simple and cost effective in addition to the journey of discovery and the pleasure of finding the wood. All of his work is signed and the wood identified, if possible. He states he is often "too grumpy for Gozo", likes to be alone and is comfortable with his own company. Introspective, with a dry sense of humour, strong minded, straight forward and concerned with the improving the environment: what you see is what you get with Paul. "I came to Gozo for a holiday with my sister in July 2014 to look around, and thought I would give it a go. The recession in the UK was resulting in less work. I had no responsibilities there and was free to pursue a new adventure. On Gozo I found warm, friendly, kind, helpful English speaking people. It is a simple life, I love the landscape and the sea which surrounds you and which is a luxury that costs nothing.” In his free time, which he claims he does not have as he is always obsessed with finding wood, Paul plays the guitar, walks, swims, looks for fossils in mud cliffs, beach combs for bits and pieces and found objects, and reads - his favourite subjects are: science, fiction and cosmology/astronomy. He loves to cook and states that one of the benefits of living on Gozo is that good quality fish is affordable. He dreams of carrying on what he is doing now, living a simple life, perhaps to paint and drawing again and make a living out of wood turning - just enough to live on. Oh . . . and he would love to never have to sand wood again! Ever!

Paul has a degree in Fine Art. He has been painting and drawing, sporadically, since he completed his studies. He gets a sudden urge to paint, which lasts for a week or two, and then it disappears. It is fleeting and frustrating, and often he has been unable to capture the result he wanted. He has a vision but can't quite get there and feels restricted with painting drawing as an art form and also found it a challenge to sell his paintings in the U.K. Things changed when he met a wood turner in Bristol. They got together in a woodshop where there was a lathe which had not been used in years. After taking a three day course from Melvyn Ferminger, he loved the process and it seemed to give him everything painting did not: the challenges of problem solving and a new creative outlet. "You are on a lathe and you can turn one round shape, but the result is limitless due to fact that the each piece of wood is unique. The opportunity is for you to find what is already there. I have an intense love of wood and before beginning work, stare at a piece and observe how it has grown.” When asked about his style: "I haven’t got one; it’s the wood. I keep shapes simple and see what the possibilities are, which do change during the process. It is important to be conscious of the practicalities of wood as you don’t want it to fly apart while working on it. I allow the wood to show itself off, rather than to show off my skills. I am not consciously doing anything, it is already there and I am just making it into a shape.” His inspiration is the wood itself, and its natural, organic form and shape.

She tells a charming story of her very first trip with her uncle when she was nine years old. Upon being told she was going to take a trip to Switzerland, she was very excited and proud !. Meeting a woman on the plane, Claire asked: “Where are you going?” The woman replied: “I am going to Zurich”, to which Claire responded: “Oh really . . . I am going to Switzerland!”, The woman said: “Yes, Zurich”, And Claire responded: “NO . . . you are going to Zurich. I am going to Switzerland!”

A young woman bursting with passion and energy, she is a leader in the food scene of Gozo. She wears many hats; chef, food stylist, photographer and restauranteur. As if that was not enough, she also offers private chef services and outside catering.

About her photography: For ten years Claire has been a chef contributor for “Taste & Flair”, the monthly lifestyle and food magazine published by the Malta Independent. Initially she worked with a photographer, but when the end results were not what she envisioned, she began experimenting with a camera a friend has given her. She parallel photographed with the photographer until she was confident enough to present her work to the Editor. She also writes and photographs for a monthly supermarket publication on Malta. She is inspired by world culture, the seasons and her moods. Her favourite foods are the local fish and seasonal vegetables, but she is willing to try almost anything. When asked about her free time activities, Claire enthusiastically states: “I like to cook to relax, cook when I need to be distracted, cook when I am bored, cook when it's raining and cook to please my family - it is my passion. Apart from that I love to watch a good movie, read (if I am patient enough) and travel.”

Though mostly self taught, she has worked in hotels in London, Switzerland and New York. And with 25 years of hands on work, it is no surprise that she cooks intuitively and effortlessly and her food is beautiful to behold, bursting with fabulous flavour. Drawing from traditional Gozitan dishes, she uses fresh, seasonal ingredients with a modern twist; her food is innovative and exciting. Her earliest memories are all related to smell and taste, of her Father cooking lobster and prawns, of fish on the barbecue and his fish soup.

Which foods should visitors to Gozo try? “Good pastizzi, Kinnie, cheese ftira from the bakeries in Nadur, local prawns, gbejniet and the local Gozitan honey and bread.”

Claire and her brother, Mark, own Mojo’s Bar and Restaurant which has firmly established itself as a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Always buzzing with life, they have created an atmosphere where all feel welcome, well cared for and very well fed. Having a flat on the Island, we usually come during the summer months, we decided to visit during the winter for a change. As you can see in the photo, the farmland was lush green, no doubt fertile and meticulously kept by the local farmers. With a thunderstorm just brewing, I managed to capture the shot. What I like about the picture is the contrast between the green fields, stone buildings and the dark, grey sky. The picture was taken from the Citadel, in Victoria, and the view from within gave us a 360 view of the entire Island. Looking down on the villages below, in the far distance you can see the Ta’Gurdan Lighthouse, it overlooks the small village of Ghasri and is located in an area called Ta’ Gordan Hill. Constructed in 1851 during the British period, the lighthouse was built to monitor and assist maritime traffic in the region. In the photo you will see the hills that dominate the Gozitan landscape, these proved to be a strategic tool to defend the Islanders from the numerous attacks they withstood over history. On top of the hill in the far right, you will find the village of Zeebug, overlooking the salt pans and Obajar Bar, it offers a great view of the Northern Coast.

Mgarr Harbour

Leaving Mgarr always fills me with mixed emotions, on the one hand I am sad to be leaving this beautiful Island, leaving friends behind, but at the same time I leave with a rhy smile, knowing that I will be back here again sometime soon. I always mutter to myself, good bye my old friend, see you again soon. The feeling of excitement that fills me however when the Gozo Channel Ferry slowly makes its way into Mgarr is hard to explain, I’m back and I can’t wait to immerse myself back into Gozitan life. Mgarr is the first place that any new visitor to the Island will see, there aren’t too many prettier sights to behold the naked eye when rolling into a port. Mgarr really is your quintessential picture postcard harbour. As the boat draws in, my eyes are first drawn to the newly developed Marina and a mixture of old and new, some stunning fishing boats representing the old, still installed in Gozitan history and still playing a very active life in the daily comings and goings of the Island. Representing the new is the stunning collection of super boats, it’s not just the humble tourist that visits these shores, but rich types from The South of France, Italy, Malta and further afield. My eyes then wonder to the shoreline, the taxi’s/buses waiting to ferry people to their final destination, and then as we are about to dock, the wonderful smells from the restaurants that are dotted around the port. I for one, will certainly be participating in an evening or two in Mgarr during my stay. The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, a very pretty sight, overlooks the port, offering a steady reassurance that everything is going to be alright for those coming and going. I took this picture as the ferry was leaving port, so it’s with a heavy heart, but, goodbye my old friend, see you again soon…

raft beer lovers will be in for a real treat when they visit Gozo, as the Island is now home to itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first ever Micro Brewery, located in The Gozitano Complex in Xewkija. Lord Chambray Microbrewery was inaugurated last summer at the end of July 2014. 2015/2016 already promises to be a busy and eventful year for the team at Lord Chambray as it will be their first real year on the Maltese and Gozitan market. There are numerous projects being lined up, including the exportation of the beer.

There has been a craft beer revolution over the past five years, real beer connoisseurs understand that the quality of craft beer is far superior to that of standard beer producers who use inferior ingredients in their beer making process.

Lord Chambray is the brain child of Italians, Samuele Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Imperio and Valentina Rossetto, Samuele has been visiting Gozo since his childhood and saw a gap in the market for craft beer production on the Maltese Islands. The names of their beers, San Blas, Blue Lagoon, Fungus Rock, Golden Bay reflect their close links to Gozo and Malta. The beer is available in hotels, bars, restaurants, supermarkets and on the Gozo Ferry. It has been a good start for the team, in November 2014, just three months after starting operations, Lord Chambray received an Honourable Mention for its English IPA (San Blas) in the Brussels Beer Challenge 2014. San Blas, entered in the section Pale & Amber Ale: English IPA, was the only entrant to receive an honourable mention. BREWED IN GOZO At Lord Chambray particular attention is paid to the quality of the ingredients. All of their beers are brewed from natural raw materials with no additives, no preservatives, no chemicals, no cheap substitutes. Let’s start from the main element, water. At Lord Chambray they believe in revitalized water. The technique called Grander works with natural energy. What happens here is ‘information transfer’ from water to water because water has the power to absorb and store information. In a nutshell, they give its original memory back to the water as if it was source water. What’s the benefit ? Their beers are smoother at the first sip, the carbon dioxide bubbles even finer, giving the beer a fine-pore, creamier head. The yeast is the master brewing ingredient. It is responsible for the conversion of sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide in the fermentation stage. At Lord Chambray they choose the highest quality yeasts which are supplied by Fermentis, the best dry brewing yeasts in the world which have been used for generations. The barley malt used for brewing their range of beers is well-selected between a wide range of base and speciality Belgian malts of the highest quality. Barley malt has unique characteristics because it provides flavour and colour. What makes craft beer so special ? Hops. That’s for sure. Hops provide bitterness, flavour and aroma without forgetting that the hops are natural preservatives. And at the brewery they use different varieties of hops from the USA, the UK, Germany and Slovenia. So how do Lord Chambray brew their beers ? The first stage of their beer production is called concassage, where the barley grains are lightly crushed open to allow them to interact with the water and release their flavours and aromas. Once this light crushing process is complete, the malt is placed in the first kettle,

where the water and barley grains become a mush. This mixture is heated to precise, predetermined temperatures. Once this temperature is reached, the sugars present in barley grains are modified on their own and become maltose and sucrose. These are the kinds of sugars that can be fermented and therefore transformed into alcohol with the yeast. Once this process is complete, the liquid is then transferred to a second kettle, heated to a high temperature and then the other ingredients are added. The liquid is transferred to the conical fermentation vats. A small quantity of yeast, known as the starter, is added and the fermentation process takes place over an 8 to 12 day period. After that, the beer is left for a minimum of 15 to 20 days for maturation. At this point, the beer is ready for the final stage, the bottling process. As part of the beer bottling process, a small quantity of sugar is inserted so that, following the Champenoise method, there will be a second fermentation in the bottle, which lasts about a week at 27°C, enables the beer to take the right quantity of gas in a way that, when the bottle is opened, it will produce its natural white head.

Buying A Property The process here is quite straightforward, but different to the UK in particular. A Notary, who has a care of duty to both parties, but is usually appointed by the purchasers, will prepare

It is important to be aware that the deposit is forfeited in favour of the vendor if the purchaser does not appear on the final deed without a valid reason at law. If a bank loan is involved to secure the property, then the signing will take place at the

relevant Bank's premises. The final deed is read and agreed upon and the balances due will be paid accordingly. These are; balance of the selling price to the vendor; the balance due to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue for stamp duty as well as between 1.5-2% Notary fees to the Notary Public. The keys to the property are then handed over and you become the new owner of the property. The Notary public registers the contract with the Public Registry.

Expenses incurred when buying a property Stamp duty 5% Duty on Documents is calculated on the purchase price of the immovable property If the Buyer is a European Union Citizen declaring on deed that he/she shall reside in the property being purchased as his sole ordinary residence, then the preferential rate of 3.5% is applied on the first €150,000 of the price. In respect of transfers of immovable property, made before the 1st July 2015, no duty shall be chargeable on the first €150,000 of the aggregate value of the consideration paid for the acquisition of such property, provided that this is the first immovable property acquired inter vivos by such person. This concession has been extended provided completion occurs before end of September 2015 (tbc). No stamp duty is charged on the cost of any furniture or other movables declared in the contract of sale. Promise of sale agreements have to be registered with the Inland Revenue Department and 1% provisional duty is payable at this stage on the contract value of the property being transferred. The provisional duty is off set against the final duty due on the final deed, or is refunded in case the deal fails to materialise.

Notarial Fees A Maltese Notary is a publicly appointed official, who is responsible for conducting the relevant Public Registry searches, ensuring that there are no issues with the property’s title and that the transaction is carried out according to Maltese law. It is mandatory by law for a sale of Immovable property to be notarised by a publically appointed Malta Notary. Approximately, 1.5 to 2% of the immovable property price is due as notarial fees. The notary is usually chosen by the purchaser. This amount may vary according to the volume of title research required.

2014 was an exciting time for The Island of Gozo, it played home to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who spent three months on the Island filming their new Film, By The Sea. Mgarr IX Xini, the normally idyllic bay, was where the film was shot and it was transformed into an unrecognisable sea-side village, with a new hotel on the cliffs overlooking the bay and a new beach front restaurant. Our Gozo News The Gozo Business Chamber recently announced that the government had signed an agreement with the renowned medical school, Barts of London, to set up a Medical school in Gozo. In addition to this, The Government is also investing in the Gozo General Hospital, with capacity due to reach 450 beds.

Congratulations to Xewkija Tigers who are the new GFA Football Champions 2015 and for completing the treble by winning both the Cup and the Super Cup, a truly memorable year for the whole of Xewkija. During a routine building excavation in St Francis Square, close to the

Ministry of Gozo, Mark Attard, Gozitan archaeologist found what appears to be a complex of Punic tombs. Mr Attard believes that we are talking about tombs that are more than 2,500 years old. Pieces of pottery were found dating from Roman and Byzantine time. This is an exciting discovery and I am sure more news is to follow.

Author Emma Louise Nash has been visiting Gozo since she was a child and it was her annual trips to The Island that inspired her to write two childrens books, Gozo’s Eventful Day and Henry’s Visit. The Gozie and Friends series is set in Razzett Lelluxa, a beautiful villa in the village of Xaghra. The main character is a dragonfly called 'Gozie' who, along with his friends, finds himself caught up in exciting, fun adventures whilst meeting new and interesting characters. The books inspire imagination and take you on a magical journey where friendship and teamwork overcome all. Book 1: Gozie’s Eventful Day In the first book of the series ‘Gozie’s Eventful Day’, Gozie’s wings are stolen by a playful kitten called Mixie. Our Gozo News Citadel Museums - Restoration Works. Extensive restoration works have been ongoing in the Gozo Citadel for the last few years as part of an EU-funded project focusing on the restoration and upgrading of the Citadel. The project was embarked upon by the Ministry for Gozo and is to include also the transformation of a

mid-19th century water reservoir into a visitor centre. Following the completion of restoration works on the bastion walls, attention turned to the interior of the Citadel complex. At this stage, structural ruins are being restored, new services are being distributed beneath

the surface of existing passage ways, a new pavement is being laid out, any archaeological remains encountered during the monitored process are documented and preserved in the best possible manner. C/O Heritage Malta www.heritagemalta.org

My Gozo Charity 2015/16

Puttinu Cares

My Gozo is delighted to announce that our featured Charity for 2015/16 is Puttinu Cares. The Puttinu Cares Support group was set up in 2002 and begun from a desire to offer a Holistic support and care for families of children suffering from cancer. Dr Victor Calvagna and Mr Rennie Zerafa were the founders of this group. Puttinu is a character created by Mr Philip Farrugia Randon. He is an angel sent from heaven to take care of Toninu, a Maltese boy. Puttinu Cares employs the principle of solidarity. The charity relies on sponsors and generous donations from the public, who are participating regularly in fund raising activities. The team of volunteers provide help and support to children who need hospitalization in the Rainbow ward (Oncology ward)at The Mater Day Hospital. The support group offers guidance for parents in order to help them deal with what lies ahead and give them hope for a better future.

In the first year with great dedication and commitment the members of this committee were able to organise several activities most of them with the collaboration of other organisations including schools and after a month of solid fund raising they raised â&#x201A;Ź 21000. Since then Puttinu Cares were able to find a lot of support and help from volunteers. Through these years the awareness in Gozo increased significantly. The group now have several regular sponsors and volunteers who support their noble cause. The foundation have several private organisations, non-governmental organisations, schools and departments who organise fund raising activities throughout the year. They have created several initiatives to acquire more donations which includes the donation of money to Puttinu cares instead of giving souvenirs to guests, for family occasions, holly communion, marriages etc. The Gozo Half Marathon is organised by Puttinu Cares with the goal of continuing to increase awareness of their noble cause. They have volunteers who organise High teas, raffles, bingo nights and other activities as fund raising. There are other creative persons (artists) who donate their artistic work for fund raising and auctions. Another great sports activity which every year attracts hundreds of participants is the Fun Walk organised by the Social activity committee of the Gozo General Hospital. The Gozo committee present the yearly collection every year during the Football Marathon organised by the Puttinu Cares at Marsa sports grounds. Puttinu Cares are proud to announce that with the help of their volunteers and the Gozitan public, since the first year have been able to collect more than â&#x201A;Ź100,000, an amazing effort. With the generosity of the Maltese and Gozitan people the foundation was able to build apartments in The UK to cater for the families who have to travel with their loved ones who need treatment in hospitals in UK. The foundation used different means to support patients and their families through the complexities of illness. The Gozo Committee was set up in September 2010. The aim was to increase awareness of Puttinu Cares in Gozo and to be of support and guidance to Gozitans who are suffering from cancer and need treatment abroad. In the beginning the group was made up of 6 members. Thanks to the continuous extensive coverage and support offered especially by the local media, Puttinu Cares has throughout the years created a respectable image among its ever increasing supporters and donors.

One of The Best Ways... ...to explore Gozo is by visiting the colorful restaurants dotted around the Island. There has been somewhat of a culinary revolution over the past couple of years, competition is strong so restaurants have had to up the anti and continually produce top quality cuisine. It would be easy for each restaurant to replicate one another but on Gozo you will find a wide range of cuisines, each restaurant is different and has it’s own twist on classic dishes. There is of course a heavy Italian influence, but there has been a big effort recently to incorporate local Gozitan, traditional cooking. It is a given that seafood is a strong influence. You can also find authentic Indian and Chinese cuisine as well as restaurants championing beef and more importantly juicy steaks. Chefs like George Borg and Claire Borg are busy championing Gozitan cuisine Internationally. George works closely with the MTA and Claire is a regular contributor in the national press and on TV. I don’t believe it will be long before we see Gozo awarded it’s first Michelin Star. Our restaurant guide is on a village by village basis and whether you are staying in the same village or are elsewhere on the Island, we encourage you to get out there, explore what Gozo has to offer from a culinary perspective and let your taste buds do the talking. Qala Village Square Bliss Qala is the most easterly Village on The Island and has a beautifal Village Square dominated by it’s Church. In front of the Church you will find the family run restaurant, Ta’Vestru. From the outside, Ta’Vestru is a warm, welcoming Gozitan house of character and the interior mirrors this theme. It is rustic and this is reflected in the menu, Gozitan dishes including stuffed pork, rabbit stew, lamb shank are the order of the day. Pasta specialities

Xaghra Sleepy Village Xaghra Village square is a hive of activity both day and night, although it could still be called somewhat of a sleepy village. Home to a hotel and numerous B&B’s, tourists are attracted to it’s real Gozitan feel, a sense of being away from it all. It is home to some quality restaurants and you won’t leave disapointed. Located on the main square in Xaghra, Rubble Bar/Restaurant, has been one of the main stays of the Xaghra food scene for a long time. Local regulars mix with tourists who are drawn to the bar for it’s relaxed atmosphere and a place where you can catch up with friends. The terrace has great views of the square and inside, the bar has an oldie worldie feel to it where you can feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Rubble serves up delicious plates of local Gozitan delicacies, as well as excellent pasta, meat and fish dishes. RECOMMENDED DINING GUIDE Breeze Restaurant, located on Xaghra square has been operating for four years and has built up a strong flow of loyal customers. The restaurant is family run and Rita, the proprietor, has worked hard to create an imaginative menu. The Mediterranean cuisine and vegetarian menu offer salads, fresh pasta, meats including duck, quails and local rabbit. The restaurant serve daily caught fresh fish, Gozitan Delicacies and Traditional food as well as Pizza. Nothing is too much of a problem for these guys and if there is something that you want that isn’t on the menu then the team will do their best to prepare something to taste. The Breeze menu is complemented by a large selection of local and foreign wines. Breeze is open every day for lunch and dinner but closed on Wednesday during winter months. Located in Xaghra, on the road just down to Marsalforn, the views from Gianni’s offer some of the best on The Island including The Citadel, Gozitan Countryside and Marsalforn and beyond. The restaurant has it’s origins in the Piedmont region of Italy and is the first Piedmontese Restaurant on the Maltese archipelago and is run by father and son, Gianni and Stefano Remondino. Their Italian origins are shown in the menu and this is real, Italian food and they offer a taste of Northern Italian cuisine. All food is cooked fresh and uses local Gozitan ingredients. Starters include anti-pasti including Pepperoni al forno in salsa di acciuga e aglio, a Piedmontese classic, mains include another traditional dish, Filetto di manzo con salsa Brusca. They also serve up some fantastic pasta and rissotto dishes. Ta’Frenc is an institution for real foodies who are looking for a fine dining experience and executive chef Mario Schembri and his team do not fail to deliver. Ta’Frenc is housed in an authentic old farmhouse and diners have the choice of dining in their own private dining room or on the beautiful terrace. As you walk into the restaurant you may notice a sweet smell in the air, this is in fact the new herb garden where both herbs and flowers are grown organically and used throughout the menu. The menu has a classic French feel to it and includes an a la carte menu as well as various market menus that offer very good value. The fish soup is a must as is the Chateaubriand, if you have room for desert I highly recommend the Crepes Suzette, flamed at the table no less. Ta’Frenc is closed on Tuesdays. Going strong now for the last couple of years, Chris and the gang have created a menu that appeals to everyone, whether you want a full English breakfast (awesome), a ciabatta/ftira, sandwich, burger, pasta or a la carte. Their breakfast ftira is famous. This has to be one of the best cafeterias on the Island, it does great coffee too. The guys here don’t take themselves too seriously and the atmosphere is fun and friendly. If you want good, honest comfort food then Cup Cake will deliver. The sign of a good place is when it is always busy, this is the case here. From morning until later in the day, Dukes Cafe is satisying the needs of shoppers, workers and tourists a like. The menu is family friendly and forget Mc Donalds, this is the place where you want to come for a real burger, juicy and wholesome, they won’t leave you feeling hungry afterwards, although we think you might be tempted to one of the delicious ice creams or desserts. Who doesn’t like Chinese ?, lovers of Asian cuisine will be delighted to hear that Gozo is home to one of the best Chinese restaurants on the Maltese Islands, Fu Hua. Others have been and gone but Kevin and his team have been churning plate after plate of classic dishes for years and it is a busy place all year round and a favorite with locals. Dishes are generous and taste fresh and full of flavor. There is a full a la carte as well as take away menu. This is the only Chinese restaurant on Gozo to go to. (Fortunato Mizzi Street, Victoria, +356 2156 4666). Just on the outskirts of Victoria, in the shadows of The Citadel, you will find an old converted farmhouse that houses La Stanza Restaurant. It can be described as an oasis of calm and tranquility, within which, you are taken on a gourmet journey. La Stanza prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients and has an ever changing menu that reflects the seasonality of the produce, instead of relying on a tried and tested menu. There is a French twist to this place, not surpirsing given that the proprietor, Cedric is a Frenchman. Dining takes place either within the beautifal internal courtyard, or on the roof terrace that has a commanding view of the Citadel, which looks even more amazing lit up. GOZO

My name is Jeff Murphy, I am Welsh. I come from a small town called Kidwelly on the west Wales coast. It’s a very beautiful little town. I was born and brought up there. Its claim to fame is that it is the oldest borough in Wales. I believe they had a council meeting in the mid13th Century. My brothers still live there and I try to get to see them whenever I can. The picture on the right is of the great Norman Castle that overlooks the town:

The town in those days was run by a guy called Maurice de Londres. A very bad man. The Al Capone of his day! He was not liked much by them medieval locals! Oh no Sir! I studied at the Grammar School in Carmarthen an old Roman town ten miles west of my home town, leaving school early to become a musician. Well a rock star really but that didn’t work out! Music was my first love and rock and roll topped everything. I began as a busker in London. Busking mostly in Edgeware Road Tube Station aged 14 or 15. I first appeared on stage aged 4. Showbiz of one sort or another is in the blood. I spent most of the proceeding 20-odd years in the music business. In 1996 I changed course. After a short illness, related to a creative condition I have, which I will go into later, I decided to pack in live performing and all the travelling and hassle that can involve and go back to school. It was there I began to write. In 2000 I started to seriously write. I spent a lot of time in California, living in the San Fransisco Bay Area for a while, learning my craft, which initially was screenwriting. I have made a living as a screenwriter and author since. I was awarded the BAFTA for my work on Welsh crime series Hinterland but I always feel it was for the many long years of hard slog that came before. It was a lovely night, the night of the BAFTA, and I had a little touch of Gozo with me that night too, when my friend Grace Bajada of Munxar, honoured me with her presence for the evening. life. It’s easy for those outside of the business to see success of any kind and think that some form of easy street is just around the corner. But the business is unrelenting and difficult and very often when one rises from one level to another, problems will ensue. Right now I have four feature films being prepared for production. Fairytale of New York is with Sarah Jessica Parker’s company Pretty Matches in New York, Denmark, to be filmed first I think, with BBC Films/Daybreak Pictures and my own company Severn Screen, Moifaa is a big children’s adventure film set in New Zealand and that’s going really well for a high budget movie, finally my boxing film Johnny based upon my book Johnny Owen is to be announced with a new director shortly. Both Johnny and Moifaa were written on the island at the Hotel Calypso. It’s a cool place to write, Gozo. I am also working on a very important new book called Welcome to Valleywood. A percentage of my income goes to charities dealing with autism and aspergers syndrome. I have the latter condition and my brother is autistic. One of my producer friends’ has an autistic son, so we take great interest in doing what we can to help. The book will detail my journey through show business and life and is a no-holdsbarred view of how up and down this beautiful condition can be. I will be writing this book on Gozo from May to September. I want to try and help those who have the condition to come to terms with it and not be afraid. It’s a blessing. That’s the way I look at it. On the island itself I am working with a lovely young producer called Sharon Calleja. Sharon is a TV/Film producer living in Xaghra. We are writing a documentary film called Gozitan Expressway and are trying to finance the project as I speak! It will be a film about a day in the life of the wonder that is Gozo. I want to use the Island’s life force as a metaphor, to show the world how life can be, if human beings wanted it to be. This project is tied up with the CD Album MADE IN GOZO by Murphy,

Murphy is the name of the studio band that played and recorded the work. The album has eleven original tracks. It was released in over one hundred countries worldwide just recently. It is available on itunes, Amazon and so on. The CD’s are to be released later this year. I wrote all the songs on Gozo and recorded the album at Keith Anthony’s Noise Studio in Qala. If you’re a musician who wants to do something special with your work, book now. Keith is a first class producer and arranger and a first rate person. Do not go anywhere else to record your work if you live on Gozo. I came to Gozo first in 2011. I originally arrived for two weeks. I was convalescing after a long period in hospital. The island felt like magic to me from day one. There is no explanation for falling in love. It just happens. And I fell in love with Gozo, No doubt. I returned, time and time again, and each time I returned I always referred to my journey as ‘going home’ because that is how Gozo felt to me.

I stayed at hotels to write. It was such a wonderful time, a time of peace, a time of great creativity, a new time in history for me personally. I began to make friends. George Gauci of Marsalforn is a close friend and George introduced me to many, including Keith at the Qala studio. But the person who opened the island up to me like no other was Grace Bajada. Her knowledge of the island, its history, the beautiful nooks and crannies that only Gozitans could know, changed my life completely. I am indebted to her for taking the time to show this ‘foreigner’ her land. Aside from all that, Grace is an exceptional person, she has an artist’s eye of the world, loves colour and is a truly warm and gracious human being. I don’t go out a lot on Gozo. I enjoy walking and thinking about my work and life, that kind of thing. I still play and create music, and I love my apartment. The view I have is breath taking. I hope to stay on Gozo for many years to come now. I have decided to make my home here.

The saying goes, all roads lead to Rome, well in Gozo, all roads lead to Victoria, the Capital. Otherwise known as Rabat to the locals, The Islands Capital is very much it’s heart beat. It is where people go to do most of their daily chores. If you need something, whether it be a fresh pepper, a pump for your bicycle or a tooth operation, Victoria will have it, and if they haven’t just ask a local and they will definitely know where you can get it. Steeped in History and dominated by The Citadel, Victoria wakes up early. It’s not uncommon to see local cafés and bars, thriving from 6am onwards. In France, the French go to a Brasserie for a croissant and an Espresso, in Gozo it’s Pastizzi, a local pastry filled usually with Peas or Cheese, the latter being my favourite, washed down with a coffee. A great way to appreciate Victoria is literally to just park yourself outside a bar/café for a couple of hours. Our favourites are It Tokk in Independence Square, Cup Cake opposite The Bus Station, Tapies Bar in San Francisk Square, and the numerous cafes located in St George’s square, as well as Cafe San Martino in The Citadel.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO Victoria has gone through somewhat of a transformation over the last two years, it’s had a bit of a ‘’spring clean’’, The Citadel has been returned to its former glory, a beautiful Park has been created (Villa Rundle Gardens) and the main squares of IT Tokk and Savina Square have been given a makeover. A visit to Victoria, and Gozo, would not be complete without a visit to the Citadel, a historic fortress dating back to 1500BC which dominates the capitals skyline. Within its walls lies a fine 17th century

Xlendi, is a picture postcard bay located

to the south west of the Island and is a firm favourite amongst Gozitans, Maltese and Tourists a like. Many people are attracted to Xlendi due to the Waterside setting of the many bars and restaurants that line the quayside. There is also a small sandy beach and excellent sunbathing spots located around the bay and plenty of water sports activities to keep all of the family happy including canoeing, banana boats, pedalos and diving schools. Self-Drive motor boats can also be hired as well as fishing trips organised, see page ...Xlendi is home to over 20 restaurants that serve up fresh fish caught the same day, pasta, pizza, Indian, Chinese, and excellent meat dishes. WHAT TO SEE AND DO As you would expect from a sea-front location, everything revolves around the water in Xlendi, hire a boat from Xlendi Pleasure Cruises and explore the bays around Xlendi or venture further a field to Comino or around the Island. Xlendi is home to several large caves including St Catherine’s Cave and Carolina's cave. Carolinas is found on the cliffs on the right hand side of the bay if you are looking out to the sea. The cave was once the property of Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria. In later years she founded the Augustinian Sisters on Gozo and donated almost all of her land, including the cave and other land in Xlendi

to the sisters. During the summer months the Sisters would reside in Xlendi and would bath in the cave that offered them privacy from other swimmers as it could only be reaches by private stairs. St Catherine’s Cave is located to the right of the bay, just as you are entering Xlendi Bay, it is a popular place for snorkelers and divers alike owing to the crystal clear waters found in and around the cave. During the 17th Century, people in fact lived around the cave and it received its name after a Church that was built above the site and the Saint whom the Church was dedicated to. Unfortunately the church is longer on the site. At the Head of the Bay you will find an old watchtower dating back to 1650, it was built on the order of Grandmaster Lascaris and stands 35 ft square at its base and 30 courses high. Although visitors cannot go inside the watchtower, it is currently being restored, but it is well worth the walk, for sun seekers there are some fabulous bathing opportunities around the tower. The Watch Tower can be reached by following the coastal path to the left of the bay through the Kantra Valley and by taking the bridge that connects the headland to the land. Il-Kantra is a valley found to the left hand side of the bay close to the watchtower. The name Kantra derives from Alcantara in

Spanish-Sicilian. This is due to the odd shape of the valley that resembles a bow. Il-Kantra is home to many types of flora and fauna, these are allowed to flourish as the valley isn’t populated. The Watchtower is reached by a bridge built by the Knights of Saint John over the Kantra Valley. In 1955 During British rule of the Maltese Islands several emergency mills were built that were capable of producing flour for the Islands if a Cold War was to break out. One of these mills was excavated in the cliffs behind The Mount Carmel Church, in Xlendi, and is the only one left intact on Malta and Gozo. The excavation of the mill was a huge undertaking, cumulating in an entrance tunnel some 30 metres long, and a 3 storey chamber that housed the grinding and milling equipment, thankfully the mill was never put into use, but there are plans to restore the mill to its former glory as most of the original equipment is still inside. The church in Xlendi is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and dates back to 1868. On the first Sunday of September each year a feast is celebrated in honour of Mount Carmel and it is a really enjoyable weekend to be in Xlendi. During the day water games are held in the bay, with the traditional 'gostra' a greasy pole that you have to climb to seize a flag, proving very popular.

Maria who is originally from Victoria and we had to move there at the start, but that didn’t last long and we moved back to Xlendi in a little house on the edge of the hill, and it’s then that my wife and I, along with new born Terence started living a peaceful life. We were then joined a few years later by our second son, Christian.

Gozitan Louis Attard is a familiar face in Xlendi, during the summer months you will find him at his Xlendi Water Sports stand on the beach, a business he has built over 25 years. Louis shares with us his history as well tips for enjoying the Island.

Xlendi Bay is a very quiet place to live in the winter, and busy enough to work in the season to catch up with the winter months. If a tourist likes to relax and unwind from their busy life back home, Gozo and especially Xlendi Bay is the place to go. So tiny that a tourist will get familiar with the places the local people right away and since most tourists are only here for a short stay this will be an advantage. You won’t waste anytime on long journeys getting around the Island.

Well, since my father was a fisherman and spent all of his life in Xlendi Bay, my family and I have always lived in Xlendi. I married my wife

Food wise, Fresh Fish is great of course, but baked macaroni, rabbit, and a nice freshly cut salad with local Gozo cheese, capers, olives and

juicy tomatoes are a must try.

We cannot afford to take any days off in the summer since our season can sometimes be short, winter comes and we have to start our maintenance on all of our boats and believe me there is a lot of it to do. Even when we have high seas you will still find us at the canoe stand, taking bookings for the next day when the weather is calmer. If it’s windy then we decide to close and go home for a lovely home cooked lunch made by my wife and then take a nice long siesta. If I could change something about Gozo then it would be stop the tour operators who hassle the tourists in the street trying to sell them various packages, it makes us look disorganised as a country. Outside the Maltese Islands, I like all countries abroad, and one by one if I live that long I would like to visit then all..

Gharb is a beautiful Village, located west of Victoria about a ten minute drive away. Gharb is one of the oldest Villages on the Island and derives it’s name from Arabic, although in Maltese it means ‘’West’’ and it is in fact the western most Village on the Island. Gharb started life as a small hamlet hundreds of years ago and was originally populated by farmers who worked the fertile land. You can see it’s ancient roots in the centre of the Village where some houses have fine examples of decorated stone balconies. Gharb is quintessentially Gozitian and it’s main square, with the church dominating, has been the scene of many a postcard throughout the years. The village is home to many traditional Gozitan industries and is still home to traditional lace and cotton makers. The Parish of Gharb is the second oldest Parish on Gozo, the current church, built in 1699 is dedicated to the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth. The feast is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in July. Gharb lies amongst some of the most scenic countryside on the Island, particularly at Dbiegi, the largest hill on Gozo. San Lawrenz, Gharbs neighbour is also dominated by it’s Village Church and sqaure.

Gharb is home to several quirky museums including, The Gharb Folklore Museum located on the main square. The Village also houses the Ta' Dbiegi Crafts Village, a must visit for any visitor looking to sample Gozo’s arts and crafts. Down at The Inland Sea you will find The Azure Window, Fungus Rock and as the name suggests, The Inland Sea. At The Inland Sea we recommend taking a boat trip from the shore, you get to go through the tunnel and out into the open sea to see some stunning scenery.

Nadur is Gozo’s largest village with a population of just over 5000 people. Nadur means ‘’lookout’’ in Maltese and comes from the Arabic word nadara. Perched on a high hill with commanding views of Comino and Malta it is clear why Nadur was an ideal spot to look out for unfriendly enemies. Several watchtowers were built in and around Nadur , Ta’Kenuna Tower was built by the British in the 19th century and was used as a telegraph link between Gozo and Malta. From the tower you can see much of the Island and the views out towards the Comino channel are to die for. When the Knights of St John ruled the Island a tower was built by Grand Master Nicholas Cotoner and is known as Ta’Sopu tower. It is also called Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas Tower after the two bays it sits between. During the 1960’s a lot people from Nadur emigrated to the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, many of whom have now returned to the Village and their allegiances to the countries they emigrated to are shown in the flags hung outside their homes.

carnival is known as the Grotesque or Macabre Carnival due to the outfits that are donned by the festival goers. Nadur is also home to The Nadur Wine festival. The dates for the Delicata Classic Wine Festival in Nadur this year, are 28th - 30th August, the village will come alive as the wine festival gets underway at the Ġnien il-Kunsill. The festival will open at 7.00pm and the last wines will be served at 11.30pm before closing at midnight. Live entertainment every evening. Nadur also hosts a Christmas market that is a great spectacle and normally takes places on the first weekend of December. The focul point of Nadur is The Parish church which was built in 1760 and is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. The feast takes place on the 29th June each year.

Focus On Qala

One of the joys of visiting Gozo is that the Island is blessed with lots of pretty villages that are the heart of family life, community life is centred around the Village Church and Qala is no exception, it even has itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own beach on itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doorstep, Hondoq Bay

ala, located to the East of The Island, is located just above the harbour and much of the Village has commanding views of Comino, The Gozo Channel and Malta. In Maltese, Qala means ‘’Sheltered Harbour’’ and it is Gozo‘s most Eastern village. Breathtaking scenes can be enjoyed, among other places, from the Qala Belvedere and from the small courtyard in front of the church known as II-Madonna tal-Blat (Saint Mary of the Rocks). This church faces Comino and legend has it that it was built so that the people of that island could follow Holy Mass from across the straits when rough weather precluded a priest from going there. The coastline around Qala is somewhat rugged but it has played it’s part in the history of Gozo. St Anthony’s Battery, known locally as It-Trunciera, was built in 1732 by The Knights of St John as a defensive fortress to deter any enemy landings on the

Island. The Knights were responsible for inventing an explosive device called the Fougasse, which comprised of explosive material being pressed into a hole in the ground, apparently there are two that survived, one facing Mgarr Harbour at Blata I-Bajda and the other at Gebla Tal-Halfa. If you were to walk along the coastline between Hondoq and Gebla Tal-Melh then you will come across some salt-pans, that are still in use today, the strong sun and rocky coastline make it an ideal location to make salt. There aren’t many prettier places to go for a walk on Gozo, and Qala offers tourists and locals alike plenty of points of interests to see. One thing you can’t fail to notice in Qala is the windmill, probably the most prominent windmill left on the Maltese Islands. The history of Qala dates back 6000 years and several temple period and Punico-Roman pottery have been found in the local

area. At least one temple site existed in Qala and represented by The Gebla Wieqfa, standing rock, an 11 foot megalith known in Gozitan folklore as the seat of a giantess. Around Gozo, ancient cart ruts can be found, although they are not very common. Several of these can be found in Qala, one near one of two temple period settlements at Il Wileg, where you can find surviving megalithic patterns. Other stone age settlements can be found to the west of the Qala Windmill. The most well known cart ruts and most prominent ones are those found at Is-Sidra, extending to over 200 feet. It wouldn’t be disrespectful to call Qala, somewhat of a sleepy Village. Life here moves at a slow pace and it is the ideal place to while away an afternoon or an evening. Life in the Village centres around the Square and in particular The parish Church which sits in the... @terihardy 64

centre of The Village is dedicated to St Joseph, as well as The Immaculate Conception. Qala is lucky to have three Churches, one of which is The Qala Sanctuary, which is one of Islands most sacred churches. The Church was originally dedicated to The Assumption of Our Lady and the titular painting of the Assumption, which is now found at the St Josephs Parish Church is one of the most celebrated on Gozo. In 1615, Bishop Cagliares donated a new titular painting and changed the dedication to it’s current one of the Immaculate Conception. The village has a strong bond with The Immaculate Conception. Qala has been home to some well known local personalities, Mikiel Frangisk Buttigieg was born in the Village and was the first Bishop of Gozo. A statue can be found alongside the Parish Church. Another celebrated son of Qala is his Excellency, Dr Anton Buttigieg, he was Malta’s Poet of Nature and 2nd President of The Republic.

Much of life in Qala, centres around the Village Square and you kind find some really great bars and restaurants where you can while away an afternoon/evening. During the second half of September, the Village is host to the Qala International Folk Festival and music, dance, singing, colorful clothing and the unique atmosphere, turn Qala into a hive of cultural activity. In 2015 the festival will take place on 18th, 19th & 20th Sept, See www.qala.gov.mt for more details and confirmation of dates for 2015. WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK Most of the restaurants are situated around the Village Square and offer a great mix of local and international cuisine. Ta’Vestru is The My Gozo recommendation, situated on the main square, directly in front of the Church, this family run restaurant

oozes character and charm the minute you walk through the door. Styled in a farmhouse feel, you could be eating in somebodys house. This is reflected by the greeting you will receive from the front of house staff and the kitchen. On the menu you will find a good mix of local and Italian dishes including, traditional local meat, seafood and pasta dishes, the mussels spaghetti is somewhat of a house speciality. Xaghra, located to the North East of the Island is the second largest Village on the Island with a population of just over 4200 people. The village is perched on a high hill and has great views of much of the Island including Ramla Bay. In Maltese, Xaghra means ‘’wilderness’’, a term relating to its location on top of a hill. Many people believe that Xaghra was one of the inhabited parts of Gozo, and looking at the architecture of the village and its surroundings it is easy to understand why. The focal point of the Village is the Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church that stands today was built in 1815 and the church is covered in marble throughout. The Village feast is celebrated on the 8th of September and if you are on Gozo at the same time, a visit to the feast is a must. In the weeks prior to the village feast, the Xaghra Youth Centre organise the annual Xaghra Youth games, an annual event that revolves around the history of the village, Gozo and Malta and includes horse racing, the building of the Ggantija Temples, The Great Siege of 1565 and other events. If you are on Gozo around the 22nd August the games are a great family event.

WHERE TO EAT

For food lovers Xaghra is home to some excellent restaurants. A newcomer to the Gozitan food scene and located in Xaghra, on the road just down to Marsalforn is an Italian restaurant called Gianni’s. The views from Gianni’s offer some of the best on The Island inlcuding The Citadel, Gozitan Countryside and Marsalforn and beyond. The restaurant has it’s origins in the Piedmont region of Italy. Rubble Bar located on Victory Square serves both lunch and dinner and has a fantastic menu with a good variety of local delicacies as well as some excellent steaks. Mgarr, Gozo’s port, is the gateway to the Island. As the ferry makes it way slowly into the harbour, Gozo’s beauty is immediate; Mgarr is a picturesque fishing village that hasn’t really changed much throughout the years. One of the most immediate sights will be the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto that sits high above Mgarr and is actually in the Village of Ghajnsielem, it is a gothic style church and was built 1924. In 2011 the church received a set of 8 new bells with the largest weighing 5.5 tonnes. Ghajnsielem celebrates its annual feast on the last Sunday in August. As you would expect from a major port the main activity in Mgarr revolves around the fishing industry and the harbour is full of fishing vessels, large and small. There are no beaches in Mgarr but just around the corner to the east, you will find Hondoq Bay, a shingle beach that offers good swimming facilities. Comino is a short distance across the water from Mgarr. WHERE TO EAT Diners are spoilt for choice with an abundance of high quality restaurants in Mgarr. As you would expect, fresh sea-food is the order of the day but there are top quality restaurants serving a la carte food including Gozitan, Mediterranean and Chinese food. We recommend two restaurants, IT-Tmun, serves fusion and international cuisine and has a very talented team who are not afraid to venture outside their comfrort zone. Tel: 2156 6276 for reservations. Also highly recommended is L’Ankra, located on Shore St specialises in excellent Mediterranean/Italian food, as well as some fantastic local dishes cooked with flare and imagination. restauranter, Philip Spiteri will be moving to his new restaurant, Ta’Filep on the site of the ex Barumbara Restaurant, which was part of the Mgarr Hotel. HISTORY/SIGHTS/WHAT TO SEE AND DO There is a new waterfront area called Żewwieqa Waterfront' which involved rehabilitating the area known as Taż-Żewwieqa into a waterfront area by creating pedestrian zones, landscaped plazas including seating area with open sea views, an area hosting the restored Dgħajsa tal-Latini and an informal stage structure. It’s a lovely sport for a walk. Ferry services have operated between Gozo and Malta as far back as 1241 when the fishing industry was firmly established on the Island. As the fishing industry grew, so did Mgarr and communities begun to spring up around the vicinity of the harbour, especially more towards the hillside areas. The actual port area didn’t see any development until 1841 when a breakwater was built to provide extra protection. Throughout the 20th and 21st century the breakwater was extended several times and in 2008 a new ferry terminal accommodating 600 passengers and 200 cars was finally completed at a cost of €9.3 million. The new ferry terminal now allows the larger cruise ships that would normally visit Malta to stop on Gozo and allow cruise passengers a chance to see what Gozo has to offer. There are now plans to further develop the area with the creation of the Zewwieqa Waterfront, transforming parts of the port that are not in use into a family oriented space including restaurants, open spaces and restaurants. Sitting above Mgarr Harbour to the left is Fort Chambray, an old historic city located

within a fortress. Built over 250 years ago during the reign of the Knights of St John, the fort was initially built as a replacement to the Citadel in Victoria. There was also a thought that building the fort would increase trade between Gozo and Malta. The Fort was only ever used once for military purposes, in 1798, during Gozo's defense against the revolutionary forces of General Bonaparte. Several British regiments were stationed at the fort during the Crimean and First World Wars but fell into disrepair during the 20th century. . TOTAL GUIDE GETTING AROUND As there is no airport on Gozo in order to get over to The Island then you will need to take an airport transfer and ferry. Victory Garage (www.victory-garage.com) and Mayjo Car Rentals both offer direct and indirect airport transfers. The advantage of a direct transfer is that you are picked up directly from the airport and driven onto the ferry and straight to your destination in Gozo. With an indirect transfer you will be transferred to the ferry terminal where you will leave your driver and go onto the ferry as foot passengers, you will then be picked up by another company on arrival in Gozo. Cost wise there is a difference, direct transfers cost circa €60 and an indirect transfer Whether you enjoy exploring by foot, bike, car, boat, plane, or public transport, Gozo is one of the most accessible islands that you could visit. To get the best out of what Gozo has to offer we certainly advise hiring a car for at least a couple of days, expect to pay around €15-€25 Euros per day depending on make and model of the car/time of year. Gozo is a watersports and in particular a Divers Paradise. Divers are drawn to Gozo due to the clear, warm waters, but also because of the variety of diving sites available with many caves, reefs and wrecks to explore. Malta and Gozo were recently voted the 2nd Best Place to Dive in the world. There are some excellent diving schools throughout the island and all of the diving schools on the island of Gozo adhere to the highest safety procedures. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver there are courses available for all levels. Diving is possible all year round and underwater visibility is more than 30 metres. The Ministry for Gozo has invested €20,775 on the 52 diving sites in Gozo since January 2014.

A group of divers recently had a thrilling encounter with a gigantic Mola mola fish. With the appearance of an underwater blimp, the fascinating Mola mola, also known as an ocean sunfish, dwarfs the humans as they swim around it. Diver Erik van der Goot, who posted close-up footage on YouTube, said the ‘oncein-a-lifetime experience’ occurred near Wied il-Mielah. One of the main advantages of diving in Gozo is that many of the dive sites are accessible from the shore. The dive schools on the island are generally led by well-qualified multilingual instructors who have many years experience of diving around the shores. If you are new to diving there are a few legal requirements that have to be taken into consideration. Over the past 15 years several ex Gozo Channel Ferries have been scuttled around Gozo and provide an excellent artificial reef for divers. The MV Xlendi was originally scuttled in 1999 in the waters off IX-Xatt, just to the West of Mgarr. The MV Xlendi sits on the bottom of the ocean, some 40 metres deep and what makes it fascinating to divers is that it is positioned up-side down.
