EDITORS WELCOME Hi and Welcome to the 8th edition of My Gozo Magazine, your definitive guide to everything you need to know about Gozo. This is my 8th year producing the magazine and this has only been possible due to the continued support I receive from my wonderful sponsors and readers from across the globe who fill me with the encouragement, passion and desire to produce what I hope is an insightful and fun magazine to read. I also owe a debt of gratitude to The Maltese Tourism Association/MTA/ Visit Malta for their support, of which it is much appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the hotels/b+b’s/farmhouses/business’s on The Island who allow me to distribute the magazine. I cannot forget my Wife and Children who have given me their up-most support and love whilst putting this year’s edition together. My Gozo started off as a 10 page guide for guests visiting our wedding on Gozo in 2010, many of whom had never visited the Island, I never imagined that I would be producing this magazine for an 8th consecutive year. If you spot a mistake or would like to offer me any advice, please feel free to get in contact, I do this as a hobby as I have a passion for all things Gozo. The aim of My Gozo is to showcase the beauty of Gozo but also to tell you about the wonderful places to visit, and to highlight the fact that Gozo is very much a year round destination. We have all known for year’s that Gozo is a jewel in Malta’s crown and it has many secrets and hidden gems that keep drawing us back year after year, along with new visitors to the Maltese Islands. For me, Gozo is unique not only because of it’s natural beauty, but because of the warmth Gozitans extend to visitors to their Island. In the 2019/20 edition we have all of the usual features including, Events, Postcards, Walk on The Wild Side, Restaurant Reviews, Weddings, Property, Gozo News, Town/Village Guides, Sports, Adventure and much more. We have a special feature on Magro Brothers, who are a real Gozitan success story and you can find out all about what they produce and information on visiting their factory and creativity centre in Xewkija. Chantelle and Gareth share their wedding story with us, having got married on Gozo myself, I know how special a wedding abroad is, and in particular a wedding on Gozo. For me, showcasing Gozo to our wedding guests was one of the stand-out memories of our wedding. Gozo is home to the Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO world heritage site which are found in the Village of Xaghra. Ggantija, meaning giant in Maltese is a neolithic, megolothic temple complex dating back to c3600-2500 BC, making the temples more than 5500 years old. The Kelinu Grima Maritime Museum in Nadur has many rare and priceless exhibits, including authenticated timber from Lord Nelson’s ship, HMS Victory, the First US Warship, Constitution and one of Lord Mountbattens gold epaulettes. The Gharb Folklore Museum depicts daily life in Gozo of yesteryear. The museum is a showcase of traditional life and includes the printing press used for Gozo’s �irst newspaper plus a collection of old tools and clothes. 99 Pjazza il-Knisja, Gharb. Open Mon to Sat 9am-4pm, Sun 9am1.00pm. Ninus Cave is a wonderful cave with stalactites and stalagmites located at the back of a private house on 15 January Street in Xaghra. The cave was discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa. Open daily between 8am-6pm.

Not too far from Ninus Cave you will �ind Xerri’s Grotto, on a street by the same name. An underground cave was discovered in 1924 by the owners Grandfather who discovered the cave whilst digging a well... @terihardy 08

Further caves were found whilst the family were building an air raid shelter during the 2nd world war. Visitors can see stalacite and stalagmite formations including some interesting speleothems in the form of an elephants ear’s, a tortoise and a giraffe. Xerri’s Grotto can be found on Xerri Street. Opening hours, Mon-Sat, 9am to 6pm, entrance fee is €2.50 for adults and €1 for children. @terihardy

Salt Pans...To the North West of The Island, close to Qbajjar Bay, you will stumble across the remarkable salt-pans, Gozo’s commercial source of fresh sea-salt. Laid bare in all their glory, the salt pans are a strong testament of Gozo of old, one that has used it’s natural resources to make a living. Pick up a fresh bag of salt while you are there.

Unfortunately the famous Azure Window, at Dwejra, the backdrop of thousands of photos and �ilm sets is no longer with is but the area is certainly worth a visit. Next to Dwejra, you will �ind The Inland Sea, a beautiful natural lagoon , popular with swimmers and divers a like. A natural man made tunnel leads to the open sea and it is possible to take a 15 minute boat trip on one of the many �ishing boats. Dawn or dusk are a great time to go walking.

For an Island that only measures 10 x 5 miles, Gozo offers some outstanding places to cool off from the hot summer sun. The Island is dotted with beaches, inlets and secret lagoons where you can go for a dip and spend a lazy day. The most popular and largest beach is Ramla Bay, located in between Xaghra and Nadur. Ramla is a beach lovers paradise and is great for kids. There are several beach side restaurants for a bite to eat. San Blas Bay is a �irm favourite, and again is great for kids, once you reach it that is. One of my childhood memories is snorkelling at Mgarr IX-Xini, it offers beautiful water and has a 5* restaurant on it’s shore. Popular amongst locals is Hondoq Bay, near Qala and Xwejni Bay, close to Marsalforn offers good swimming and Lido facilities. Xlendi Bay and Marsalforn are old family favourites and have a multitude of restaurants to choose from. Locals will have you believe that Gozo has enough Churches for everyday of the year, whilst this isn’t quite true, the Island does have 22 Churches. You will �ind varying styles from baroque to more modern Churches. They are the focal point of every Village and play an important part of every Gozitans daily life and come to life during religious festivals. The most famous Church is Ta’Pinu, a popular place of pilgrimage for people from all across Malta and Gozo and it was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1990. Legend has it that prayers said in the Church saved the Island from the Plague. Numerous miracles and acts of God have been manifested at The Basilica and attributed to the Grace of Our Lady of The Assumption, to whom the Church is dedicated. The Cathedral, in Victoria was built between 1697 and 1711 and sits within the fortress of the Citadel. The church’s feast is celebrated on the 15th August each year and is dedicat@terihardy ed to the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Santa Maria, this is one of the biggest feasts held on Island. It is a baroque Cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafà, the Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina. It is said that it lies on the site where

a Roman temple dedicated to Juno once stood. It is most famous for the remarkable trompe l'oeil painting on its ceiling, which depicts the interior of a dome that was never built. A lesser known Church but equally beautiful found in the Citadel is The Chapel of St Joseph, built in 1625

Two of the biggest festivals are held in The Capital, Victoria, St George’s celebrates it’s Patron Saint on the 21st July and The Feast of Santa Maria is celebrated on the 15th August every year. The Capital really does come to life with various activities happening to coincide, including Horse Racing along the Streets.

Magro Brothers was founded in 1916 by three brothers who set up a company which bartered Gozitan agricultural produce on the main

land, Malta, in return for farm tools and household items that were needed on the Island of Gozo. The Brothers would venture over to Malta twice a week with their fruit and vegetables and would return with farm supplies and daily necessiďż˝es which were then sold in Gozoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest open market at Pjazza Savina. Over the years, four generaďż˝ons of Magro Brothers have built up the business into the largest food processing enterprise in Malta today.

Gozitan tomatoes are renowned for their juiciness and sweet taste and this is because they are grown in open ďŹ elds and sun-ripened in the intense summer months. The culďż˝vaďż˝on of the tomato is sďż˝ll the largest farmed crop on the Maltese Islands and during peak harvest season, which is July and August, The Magro complex is certainly a hive of acďż˝vity, with tomatoes being processed into kunserva (tomato paste), sauces, juices and ketchups.

Today, the core business of the company is built around tomato processing and the chances are that if you are a reader from the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe, Africa or Australia then the tomato ketchup you put on your food was probably made in Gozo! There are over 200 farmers, toiling away in Gozo, who produce the fresh tomato crops under licence for Magro Brothers, and around 10,000 tons of tomatoes are processed each year.

Besides the processing of tomatoes, Magro Brothers is also famed for its tradiďż˝onal cheese-making enterprise. Their gourmet dairy products include the humble â&#x20AC;&#x153;ÄĄbejnaâ&#x20AC;?; cheeselets made from sheepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s milk and which can also be found peppered or infused with herbs; and specialised hard cheeses which pay tribute to Gozoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lost cheese heritage; using the same methodology that was used back in the early 19th century! 18

the temperatures are friendlier on the foot and Gozo really does look fantasďż˝c during the Autumn, Winter and Spring months. Gozo springs into life with an outstanding array of ďŹ&#x201A;ora, greenery and fresh smelling herbs. In this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s magazine we will be taking you from the Capital, Victoria to the Salt Pans,via Marsalforn, ďŹ nishing in Zebugg. This walk takes in the best of what the North of the Island has to oďŹ&#x20AC;er... Start - Victoria Start your walk at the cross roads of Republic Street and Capuchins Street, the Victory of England Bar should be on the leďż˝ hand side. The ďŹ rst part of the walk is a gentle hike down hill from Victoria to Marsalforn. Stay on the right hand side of the road, to the leďż˝ of you will be the Citadel, overlooking the

Valley you are heading down. As you make your way down the Marsalforn Road, the Village of Xaghra and the Imrik Vallley will be on the right hand side,depending on the ďż˝me of year you do this walk, there should be some wonderful ďŹ&#x201A;ora,certainly if it is spring ďż˝me. Aďż˝er a walk of circa 20-25 mins, you will reach the ďŹ rst stop on this walk, The Taâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Mena Estate. We advise stopping here and popping in to see the majesďż˝c owner Joe and his wife and let them guide you through the story of the Gozitan wine they make on-site and the delighďż˝ul other products such as olives and tomato spread. Stock up on some goodies and fresh produce from their on-site stall and then it is oďŹ&#x20AC; to Marsalforn for stage two of this walk. 24

MY GOZO Take a right out of Ta’Mena Estate and follow the Marsalforn road for about 15 minutes, passing Ta’Frenc Restaurant on the right hand side. On your le� hand side you will see a statue of Christ The Savior which has sat proudly on top of ‘’Our Saviors Hill’’ overlooking Marsalforn since 1904. Marsalforn Upon arriving in Marsalforn head directly to the seafront and we suggest spending an hour or two on the promenade or beach, there are also a wealth of restaurants where you can get something to drink or eat. Once you are fully re-charged, follow the coastline around to the le�, you will walk over some small rock pools and then directly past O�ers Restaurant. You will need to walk up the ﬁrst hill of your trek, albeit only a short one and con�nue to follow the coast around to the le�, taking in the view of Marsalforn to your

right hand side.

The next bay you will come across is called Xwejni Bay. As you approach Xwejni Bay, you will see an old castle like building ju�ng out into the sea, this is in fact an old ba�ery Known locally as Qolla I-Bajda Ba�ery. It was named a�er a local hillcock known as ‘’The White Hillcock’’ and was built by the Order of St John between 1715 and 1716 as one of a series of coastal for�ﬁca�ons around the coast of the Maltese Islands. It retained it‘s original layout un�l 1970 when it was purchased by a local entrepreneur and was run as a popular nightclub and snack bar un�l the mid 90’s when it felt into disrepair and is now abandoned.

As you make your way around the coast, there are plenty of benches to take a rest and take in the view, this stretch is known as the Obajjar promenade and is a place that is very popular with locals, especially during the long summer nights as there are some nice areas to catch up with friends and play areas for the kids. You will have arrived in Obajjar when you see the small pebble beach and a couple of restaurants that overlook the bay. If you fancy a dip, it’s a nice spot to cool oﬀ! Leave Obajjar and con�nue to follow the coast around to the le�, there is a slight walk uphill, to your as you leave the bay you may be lucky enough to see a group of nuns si�ng outside a typical Gozitan house, cha�ng or making some local lace.

Again another great spot for a refreshing dip, there are also sunloungers which can be rented. It’s a pebble beach so make sure you bring suitable footwear.

MY GOZO The Salt Pans Upon leaving Xwejni you will stumble across the remarkable Salt Pans, Gozo’s commercial source of Fresh sea salt. Laid bare in all their glory, the Salt Pans are a strong statement of Gozo of old, one that used it’s natural resources to make a living. That the Salt Pans are s�ll in existence today are testament to one family, The Cini family who have been farming salt on Gozo for the past best part of 250 years. The cul�va�on of the salt is itself a simple but beau�ful process. During the ho�er months, the sea enters the man made Salt Pans and then slowly drys throughout the summer months leaving a salt crystalisa�on. This is then collected and harvested in the man made caves.

The season runs from around May un�l September and Emmanuel Cini and his daughter Josephine work over 350 pans. They say that each pan cul�vates around 4kg of Sea Salt, some will be exported but the majority will stay on the Island, is packaged and then sold in local supermarkets and souvenir shops. The Cini’s are certainly keeping their carbon footprint close to zero. The Salt Pans in Gozo have been around for more than 350 years and this ancient trade has been passed down from family to family. Known locally as the Xwejni Salt Pans, the Cini family have been working these pans for the last 40 years and li�le has changed during that �me, this is as close to working the land as it gets. The salt pans in Xwejni include 12

reservoirs. These reservoirs are what are called warming pans, they are large enough to hold plenty of sea water which is then pumped into the smaller pans. Some of them have names, such as 'It-Twil' (the long one), 'Tal-Blata' (the rocky one), 'L-Imkisser' (the broken one) and 'Tas-Salib' the la�er ge�ng its name from the cross carved in the rocks. The Cini family have a lot to thank the Romans for as it was they who all those years ago arranged the pans into square grids with a unique irriga�on system. A trip to Gozo wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Salt Pans, Emmanuel and his family will be more than happy to tell you about their tradi�on and it’s a great opportunity to pick up some sea salt whilst you are there.

MY GOZO Wied il-L-Għasri A�er you have stocked up on your sea-salt, it is �me to begin what is probably the most challanging stage of this trek. Start making your way away from the salt pans and con�nue to follow the road to the le�, along Triq Il Saghtrija, a�er walking uphill for around 10 minutes you will see a small road to your right, take this road un�l you see a small path leading down to an inlet. This is known as Wied il-L-Għasri, a very popular spot with divers due to the underwater caves found in the vicinity. It is also a great spot for a swim. Where the Valley and the Sea meet there is a fascina�ng cave with a ver�cal sha� that goes from top to bo�om. In years gone by it used contain a pully system which bought up sea water to ﬁll the neighbouring salt pans. A�er you have visited the inlet, head back

the same way and back onto the main road and follow the winding road all the way up the hill un�l you reach the village square in Zebbgg.

If it is the height of the summer you might be lucky to see some ﬁreworks, the locals take their religious ceremonies and ﬁreworks very seriously!

Zebbug The square in Zebbug is dominated by its Church, which is dedicated to Santa Marija and was consecrated in 1726. What makes the Church stand out is that it is covered with Onyx, a semi-precious stone. Zebbug is s�ll a very typical Gozitan Village and there are s�ll a lot of villagers who prac�ce tradi�onal cra�s, including lace and wool blankets. Due to its prominent posi�on overlooking several valleys, there is also a strong heritage of cheese making, including the famous Gozitan cheese, Gbejniet. If you are feeling peckish a�er this long but rewarding trek, grab a piece of pizza in the Square!

Roger is 72 and is a retired detective in the British Police Force and lives in the peak district in Derbyshire. Roger has been visiting Gozo since the 1970s and he's seen a lot of change over the years. One place that has never changed over the last 40 years is Gleneagles bar in Mgarr. It still retains it's old charm and has remained untouched and it is a great place to meet old friends have a gin and tonic Rogers favourite drink and watch the boats and ferries come and go. Rogers best memory of gleneagles bar was back in the late 80s when his late friend Jim, proposed to his future wife. Rogers best time to visit the bar is early evening around 6 p.m. if you come on your own don't worry as you are guaranteed to be having a conversation with somebody within minutes and owner Tony is a true Gentleman.

Despite the arrival of Lidl, small shops like this one in Victoria are well supported and they continue to exist because both locals and tourists see their value and importance in the local community. For some people, a trip to their local shop is an excuse to get out of the house and catch up on the local gossip, they might not actually want to buy much! Marion tells us that his shop in particular which is located close to Pjazza Santu Wistin sells the freshest fruit and best donuts on the Island! who are we to argue with that!

GOZITAN WEDDING FAIRYTALE A wedding abroad in a sunny climate can seem like a far fetched dream for many couples but getting hitched in a place where you are more or less guaranteed that rain will not ruin the big day is becoming very popular, and is a lot easier to organise than you think. Gozo is a dream wedding destination, you have everything you could possibly wish for, sun, beaches, some fantastic venues, plenty of Churches, fabulous food and stunning accommodation for your guests, all at a very reasonable price. One such couple, Chantelle and Gareth decided to �e the knot on Gozo, ...here they tell us their story

about the big day and share some hints and �ps about a wedding abroad. Chantelle and Gareth, first of all congratula�ons on ge�ng married, where are you both from and how did you meet? Thank you. Gareth was born and raised in Liverpool in the United Kingdom and I, Chantelle was first genera�on born in Melbourne, Australia but have lived in Liverpool since 2013. We both met through work What prompted you to choose Gozo as your wedding des�na�on? Were you looking at other countries? We originally looked into other countries, such as Turkey and Spain but quickly decided on Gozo as it was where my Nanna was born and raised and where my Grandparents first married. The Maltese culture has been a very big part of my upbringing, so it only seemed natural to celebrate it in Gozo.

Did it live upto your expecta�ons? Considering Gareth and I did not visit during the lead up to the wedding, like a lot of couples do, we had faith in our own decisions about the organisa�on of the whole wedding. We thoroughly researched online through websites and previous wedding guides in Malta/Gozo. As soon as you research 'weddings abroad' there is a lot out there but we wanted it to be a li�le more DIY. We came across the Grand Hotel, in Għajnsielem right by the Gozo harbour. A�er booking the Hotel, we found that it was quite difficult to get our point across to local vendors that we were looking for something simple and more like a party rather than a typical wedding. So Gareth and I decided to organise a lot of the bits and bobs ourselves and bring them over just before the wedding. We organised our own ar�ficial flowers, this being my bouquet, Gareth's suit pin, our table centre pieces, down to the flowers on our polystyrene wedding cake. 31

Chantelle & Gareths’s Gozo Wedding ...We organised our own music on an iPad and set up party props and a polaroid camera for our guests to take part in. We also organised personalised wedding favours, kids table, colouring books and glow s�cks. I think we could say that the Grand Hotel supported our desire to have a more relaxed wedding and this helped live up to our expecta�ons Did you invite guests from Overseas? Where did everyone stay? Did you plan any events during their stay? We invited guests from the UK, Switzerland, Malta and Australia. Everyone stayed in surrounding villas and apartments. Once our own villa was organised with Carmen Muscat from Gozoway Minibus and Cab Services, the company, also supported us in organising guest transport to and from the airport and also other accommoda�on for them. We had an open door policy with our guests and invited those to come spend �me relaxing at our Villa. Gareth had his Stag in Gozo, they all

MY GOZO went on a pub crawl around Mgarr. When researching des�na�on weddings, we saw a lot of couples planning day trips and events throughout the lead up to their wedding day. However, we took a more relaxed approach when informing our guests of things to do, we had a private Facebook group page where guests were updated on things to do and see in Gozo and Malta. They could then decide on what they wanted to do depending on how long they were visi�ng for. Informa�on included, Transport informa�on, Day Trips out around Gozo/Comino, things to see and do in Gozo and in it's capital Victoria. We were always in contact with our guests about any special or desired requests they had if they had never visited before. Tell us all about the wedding day, Transport to the venue? Ceremony? And recep�on? What was on the menu? The wedding day was hot! At the �me

of deciding, we knew it would be hot but I don't think we really knew how hot it would be. We had our civil ceremony and recep�on at the Grand Hotel in Għajnsielem. A couple of days before the wedding Gareth and I had a catch up with the hotels events co ordinator, Zoran. He was great, he informed us that on the day of the wedding, the weather was predicted to be extremely hot, and although the ceremony was organised to start at 4:30pm on the roof top, the sun was unlikely to set. We had to compromise and the hotel organised for us to have our civil ceremony in one of the smaller ball rooms. A�er the ceremony, we took photos, had a celebratory drink and then slowly headed up to the roof top where our recep�on party took place. The menu was something I was a li�le nervous about. We chose the first menu that was offered. It included a vast range of pasta, meat, salads and deserts. It definitely exceeded our expecta�ons and is one of the top things our guests s�ll rave about today.

Chantelle & Gareth’s Gozo Wedding What month did you get married? The eye of summer, August! Did you get any local help planning the wedding? Originally, we were researching and communica�ng with a lot of vendors but we soon realised that we weren't looking for a typical abroad wedding. We wanted something more simple and laid back We ended up organising everything ourselves. We both decided that we wouldn't have a photographer either. Gareth and I aren't really the type to have professional photos taken. I am quite crea�ve, and wanted a diﬀerent approach so we decided to have a polaroid guest book, where we purchased the ﬁlm and blank book. We also encouraged our guests to take as many photos as possible and upload them to our social media groups, using the #MrandMrsOwen2018 Personally, we think that these days, so many people use their smart phones to take pictures that it worked, and our guests managed to take some really great shots.

MY GOZO How easy was it ge�ng married on Gozo? Was there much red tape? We wouldn't say there was much 'red tape' unlike some other countries, however, we did have a li�le miscommunica�on regarding what forms were required and how they played a part in our nup�als. It was a miscommunioca�on that we manged to resolve in the end and all’s well that ends well, in Gozo there is a more relaxed view on life. I managed to join a group on Facebook of previous and upcoming 'Brides of Malta', this helped as any queries I had, most of the women were able to give me some advice. I was also able to give help and advice to brides who were marrying in Gozo as most couples marry in Malta and some of their documents and procedures are a tad diﬀerent to Gozo. We had some issues regarding forms that needed to be Notarised and Apos�lled in Australia but with research, organisa�on and a lot of pa�ence, it all came together. Our �ps would be to research and ask as many ques�ons as you like, keeping in mind responses can take a while so do try and ﬁnd any Brides of Malta groups online that can help support

your queries as you may ﬁnd the answers come a lot quicker than the registry oﬃces. What is your favourite memory of the wedding? That all our closest friends and family were there celebra�ng such a beau�ful milestone in such a beau�ful and meaningful place to us and we will forever remember that day and �me.

move2gozo.com Buying a Property. By law, all immovable property transac�ons must be transacted through a Malta Notary Public and be registered with the Public Registry. The Notary is usually appointed by the buyers but has a duty of care to both par�es. The process on Gozo is very straigh�orward. Once a property has been selected and we have nego�ated a price agreement, along with any special condi�ons, between you and the seller, an appointment is set with the Notary to prepare and sign the Preliminary Agreement or what is commonly known as the 'Konvenju' or 'Promise of Sale (POS)', which legally binds both the purchaser and the vendor to conclude the transac�on within an established period of �me, subject to any agreed condi�ons. On agreement to the terms of contract and signing of the 'Promise of Sale' you will typically be required to pay a deposit of usually 10% of the agreed price plus 20% of the stamp duty due, as part payment of the full 5% tax due on the sale (but see current stamp duty excep�ons below), the balance of which is due on signing the ﬁnal deed. It is advisable therefore to ensure that you have the necessary funds lodged directly with the Notary's client account in Malta, some days prior to the signing of the POS. Failure to do this may jeopardise or delay the signing. We can also recommend reliable Interna�onal Currency Brokers who can help you achieve the best transfer rates. During the ‘Promise of Sale’ Term The Notary Public carries out the necessary searches to verify legal �tle and to ensure that there are no outstanding debts, hypothecs or liens on the property. If an AIP (Applica�on for Immovable Property) permit is required, then the Notary will

MY GOZO make the applica�on on your behalf. Typically this takes between 2-4 months and costs €233 Euro on issue of permit. If this is to be your first or sole main residence in the EU and you are also an EU ci�zen, then a Government AIP Permit is NOT required. An AIP is however required if you are an EU ci�zen but already own a property in the EU, or you are not an EU Ci�zen. There are excep�ons to AIP requirements, including purchasing in Special Designated Areas and for purposes of business. Contact us for more details on these excep�ons. The Vendor will complete all special requirements e.g. complete any outstanding works, as agreed with buyer and/or as specifically s�pulated in the POS. The Vendor is also obliged to supply, or commission if one does not exist, an EPC (Energy Performance Cer�ficate) report for the property. These cer�ficates are valid for 10 years from issue. The Purchaser should complete all the special requirements e.g. organise any bank loan, check on building permits, etc. as agreed upon with seller and s�pulated in the POS. It is important to be aware that the deposit is forfeited in favour of the vendor if the purchaser does not appear on the final deed without a valid reason at law. Once all the mandatory requirements of the agreement have been met, a date is set for the actual signing of the Final Deed. This can also be before the end of the 'Promise of Sale’ term if both par�es agree. The contract signing will usually take place at the oﬃce of the Notary Public or at a venue jointly agreed by the buyer and seller and the Bank, if a bank loan is involved. The ﬁnal deed is read and agreed upon and the balances due will be paid accordingly. These are; balance of the selling price to the vendor; the balance due to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue for stamp duty as well as notarial fees.

In respect of transfers of immovable property, made before the 31st December 2019, no duty shall be chargeable on the first €150,000 of the aggregate value of the considera�on paid for the acquisi�on of such property, provided that this is the first immovable property acquired inter vivos by such person. There are other similar stamp duty reduc�on incen�ves such as if a property is located in an Urban Conserva�on Area (UCA). No stamp duty is charged on the cost of any furniture or other movables declared in the contract of sale. Promise of sale agreements have to be registered with the Inland Revenue Department and 1% provisional duty (or 0.4% if the discounted

It has been the subject of many conversations, but politicians have unanimously backed plans for a permanent link between Malta and Gozo. Although it is not yet clear if this will be an undersea tunnel or bridge, the backing is the clearest sign yet that this project will come to fruition.

Our Gozo News Football Victoria Hotspurs were the winners of the double this year, not only did they win the Championship but they defeated Nadur 3-2 after extra time in the GFA Cup Final. Bravo to Hotspurs on a huge acheievement and commiserations to Nadur after a hard fought final. It is great to see Gozitan football in such great health!

The Island came alive with a series of concerts dotted around the Capital and many museums were free to enter.

Richard Cole was a cartoonist for The Times, The Daily Telegraph, CBS and Channel 4 News, amongst others, in the time-honoured, cross-hatched style of David Levine. His drawing of the then Labour Prime Minister of Malta, Dom Mintoff in 1975 set him off on a journey, culminating in this book. Richard first visited in 1976 after he was given an Air Malta return ticket for the original copy of his Dom Mintoff painting. During this visit Richard sketched a lot of Victoria, including St Francis Square and the original Tapies Bar. Richard returned in 2009 with his original skteches and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe how much the Island had changed, including Tapies Bar and the church in St Francis Square, previously known as St Jameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church which was no longer there! In this book Richard focuses on the old beauty of Malta and Gozo, including, the atmosphere of the fish market, a jazz concert at the Bridge Bar in Valletta, the interior of a vintage bus or the regattas held in Valetta Harbour.

Our Gozo News St Francis Square which is home to the Ministry For Gozo and St Francis Church is currently undergoing a regeneration, the new square is starting to take shape and the layout will include steps from the square down to area close to the bus station, a much welcome addition to Victoria’s landscape.

MY GOZO Gozo Marathon Over 1,450 athletes took part in this years Teamsport Gozo Half Marathon. The event was spread over two days, with the first ever Race Expo in the Maltese islands taking place at Ggantija Temples on Saturday 27th April, followed by the competitive 4K and 2K kids races. On Sunday 28th April, apart from the half marathon, the

event also included for the first time a 10K race and 10K walkathon, and 5K family run and 5K walkathon, and a 2K family run. The 44th edition of the half marathon was won by Spanish national Pedro Antonio López de Haro with a time of (01:13:18:904).

Focus On Charity Work Throughout Gozo and across the world there are countless unsung heroes who are quietly dedicating their time to some wonderful charitable causes which benefit both the local and wider global communities. In this years My Gozo Magazine we want to thank some of these people, whose work has been highlighted on the My Gozo Guide Facebook page by our readers.

Jesus in Thy Neighbour is a missionary movement founded by Dun George Grima, a Gozitan priest which is this year celebrating it’s 31st Anniversary. Father Grima‘s missionary work stretches back to 1977 when he went on his first mission to Brazil where over the course of 10 years he helped to build homes for orphaned children in the Minais Gerais region of Brazil. Over the last 30 years Father Grima has worked tirelessly on projects supporting poor children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Brazil. Recent projects include providing teaching courses, food relief, the building of numerous schools, kindergartens and facilities for disabled children. These voluntary groups visited and helped the patients of the geriatric wards of Craig Hospital in Victoria and those of the Psychiatric hospital in Fort Chambray. The main functions of the society are to assist the sick and the elderly in every way and to help improve and increase hospital and home facilities available for the safety, welfare, comfort and convenience of the sick and the elderly in Gozo. The charity provides a number of different services, including meals on wheels service, special equipment supplies, hospital visits and occupational therapy. The primary aim of this happy band of men and women is the safe re-homing of hundreds of animals who pass through their doors each year. It is now 42 years since Gozo SPCA was founded by a British resident Jane Sedgfield. She was concerned by the number of stray cats and dogs in Gozo and also at the difficulties of finding veterinary care for companion animals. The results of

her initiative and the work of many others who have followed in her footsteps over the years can be seen all around us today in greatly reduced numbers of stray dogs and feral cats. The Gozo SPCA have a busy social calander and hold regular events throughout the year, including regular car boot sales. The centre is in Victoria and relys on public support to keep it running. The group was founded by Dr Victor Calvagna and Mr Rennie Zerafa. Puttinu is a character created by Mr Philip Farrugia Randon and is an angel sent from heaven to take care of Toninu, a Maltese boy. Puttinu Cares employs the principle of solidarity. The charity relies on sponsors and generous donations from the public, who are participating regularly in fund raising activities. The team of volunteers provide help and support to children who need hospitalization in the Rainbow ward (Oncology ward)at The Mater Day Hospital. The support group offers guidance for parents in order to help them deal with what lies ahead and give them hope for a better future. The Gozo Committee was set up in September 2010 with the aim of increasing awareness of Puttinu Cares in Gozo and to be of support and guidance to Gozitans who are suffering from cancer and need treatment abroad. Stuffat Tal-Fenek Ask any Gozitan who longs for The Calypso Island what dish it is that reminds them of their childhood at their Nannas house, it is a safe bet that the majority will name Stuffat Tal-Fenek (Rabbit Stew) as one of their favourites. Thankfully the recipes have stood the test of time and have been handed down from generation to generation for all of us to enjoy...

Ingrediants:

1 rabbit, (approx 1.5kg, cut in small portions) 2 onions, chopped 4 garlic cloves, peeled 5 large tomatoes 2 tsp kunserva (tomato paste) 5 potatoes,peeled and quartered 3 carrots, peeled and chopped 200 g peas (fresh or canned) 6 bay leaves Pinch mixed herbs Freshly ground pepper & Salt to season 500ml red wine 1 tsp olive oil

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

Instructions: Marinate the rabbit overnight in the red wine (marinade to include the garlic, garlic, salt & pepper In a large pot, heat the olive oil, and add the rabbit until slightly brown. Add the onions, carrots, potatoes and the tomatoes, and pour half of the marinade on the ingredients. Bring to boil on a high flame for about 15 minutes Add the remaining wine, peas, bay leaves, kidney and liver and simmer on low heat for about 2 hours, stir occasionally and add some more wine if the sauce begins to dry up.

Spaghetti with rabbit sauce as a starter Boil some spaghetti (leave al dente) pour over some sauce from the rabbit stew, garnish with grated Parmesan cheese. 50

Timpana Timpana is the ultuimate pasta pie and a delicious double dose of carbs! It is a simple but delightful dish that marries pasta, a bolognase sauce and pastry. It is typically baked in a deep dish or baking tray and can be found at snack bars across the Island for a couple of Euros and in Gozitan homes, especially around winter time...

Ingrediants:

500g puff pastry (frozen sheets) 500g dried macaroni or penne 300g beef mince & 300g pork mince 300g chicken livers, diced (optional) 300g bacon, finely diced 500g onions, finely diced , 4 cloves garlic, crushed 150g parmesan cheese,150g tasty cheese, grated 7 eggs, beaten 200g tomato paste & 200g tomato purĂŠe 500ml chicken or beef stock 150g butter, salt & pepper

For glaze, 100ml milk,1 egg

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

Instructions: Fry onions and garlic in olive oil for 5 minutes, then add bacon and pork mince, stirring well to separate. Add beef mince and continue stirring, cooking for another 10 minutes. If you want to try the traditional recipe, add chicken livers and cook for another 5 minutes. Now, pour the stock, mix well and bring to boil. Simmer for 20 minutes. Add tomato paste and tomato purĂŠe. While the sauce is cooking, cook pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until just undercooked, a bit before al dente, to give you an idea. Drain and mix with sauce, adding parmesan and tasty cheese. Stir in beaten eggs to give consistency to the mixture. Line a greased baking dish with the pastry, also on the sides. Fill it with the pasta dressed up with the bolognaise sauce and cover the top with another layer of pastry which has been pricked all over with a knife to let steam escape. Bake for 1 to 1 Â˝ hours and Enjoy!

As there is no airport on Gozo in order to get over to The Island then you will need to take an airport transfer and ferry. Victory Garage (www.victory-garage.com) and Mayjo Car Rentals both offer direct and indirect airport transfers. The advantage of a direct transfer is that you are picked up directly from the airport and driven onto the ferry and straight to your destination in Gozo. With an indirect transfer you will be transferred to the ferry terminal where you will leave your driver and go onto the ferry as foot passengers, you will then be picked up by another driver on arrival in Gozo. Cost wise there is a difference, direct transfers cost circa €65 and an indirect transfer circa €45. Whether you enjoy exploring by foot, bike, car, boat, plane, or public transport, Gozo is one of the most accessible islands that you could visit. To get the best out of what Gozo has to offer we certainly advise hiring a car for at least a couple of days, expect to pay around €15-€25 Euros per day depending on make and model of the car/time of year. A great way to see the Island is by bus, unfortunately the Old Gozitan bus’s that used to be the character of the Island are no

Hiking is one of the most relaxing and rewarding activities as Gozo has a special charm. XATT L’AHMAR One of the less well known spots on Gozo for swimming and sunbathing but what a well kept secret it is. It’s a divers paradise! Located near Għajnsielem to the South East of The Island, ge�ng there by car is a must. The man made pier makes for a good spot to jump oﬀ for those inclined, while salt pans and clay cliﬀ faces are ideal for those looking to laze around.

RAMLA BAY Arguably the best beach on the Maltese Islands. Ramla has everything, a huge family friendly beach, water sports, clear water and some great beach-side restaurants. It does get busy in the summer especially during the weekend but it is worth it. Accessible by the villages of Xaghra and Nadur, Ramla is served by Bus No 302.

MGARR IX-XINI One of our favourites!. Located in the South of The Island and accessible via the Village of Xewkija, there is a small pebble pitch and excellent swimming facili�es. In 2015 Mġarr Ix-Xini was men�oned by CNN as one of the top 10 places to visit before they are changed forever. There is no public transport and a car is necessary. There is a mobile food van and an excellent sea-food restaurant.

MARSALFORN BAY A ﬁrm favourite with locals and tourists, Marsalforn is Gozo’s premier resort. There is a good sized sandy beach which is great for kids and an array of bars and restaurants to choose from. To the right of the bay is GħajnBarrani, the stretch of cliﬀs from Marsalforn to Ramla, a sun-seekers paradise. Bus No’s 310 and 322 serve Marsalforn. 74

SAN BLAS BAY We love this place and shouldn’t really be telling you about it as we want to keep it a secret but here you go...this deligh�ul small beach is pre�y much paradise personiﬁed and you have to visit it. Access is via a steep hill and the surprise at the bo�om is worth the walk. The sand is red and easy on the feet and the water crystal clear. There is a small cafe that serves drinks and snacks. San Blas is accessible via The Village of Nadur and is served by Bus No 303.

XWEJNI & QBAJJAR BAY Xwejni and Qbajjar are two bays next to each other in between Marsalforn and The Salt Pans. Both have small pebbly beaches and at Xwejni you can rent sun loungers and parasols, both have restaurant, cafe and bar facili�es and the swimming is excellent, especially for snorkelling and diving. Bus No 310 serves both bays.

XLENDI Xlendi is another one of our favourites. Whilst the beach at Xlendi is small, its ample enough for children and there is plenty of sunbathing space do�ed around the bay with people choosing to swim oﬀ the rocks on the le� hand side of the bay. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you watered and fed. Bus No’s 306 and 330 serve Xlendi.

HONDOQ A ﬁrm family favourite with locals and tourists a like. There is a small sandy beach and crystal clear waters which makes it a great sport for swimming and snorkelling. During the summer months Hondoq is a great place to have a BBQ, especially during the evening. Located directly opposite Comino it has great views of the Gozo Channel. Accessed via the village of Qala you need a car or two wheels to get down to Hondoq which is at the bo�om of a steep hill.

Other notable places to swim are Dwejra, The Inland Sea, Dahlet Qorrot and The Blue Lagoon on Comino. 75
