TOTAL GUIDE HISTORY

The Island of Gozo is a historical monument in itself, wherever you go on Gozo you are reminded of Gozo from yesteryear. The History of the Island dates back to 5000BC when local farmers from Sicily made the short hop across the Mediterranean sea. It is thought that they made their home in caves close to the village of San Lawrenz. The temple period saw the building of the Ggantija Temples (3600-3000bc), still intact today they are widely recognised as the world’s oldest free standing structure and are certainly worth a visit. The Bronze Age was a relatively quiet period for the Island and this continued through the Phoneician/Carthaginian and Roman periods until the Arabs occupied the Island between 870 and 1127. The Arabs left a lasting influence on Gozo, none more so than the Gozitan name of the Island, Ghawdex. 1127 Saw the beginning of European dominance when Roger The Norman freed the Island from the Arabs. Between 1127 and 1530 Gozo was ruled by a series of feudal Lords whose sole intention was to maximise revenue in the form of taxes. On the 23rd March 1530, The Island was occupied by the Knights of St John, a religious order originating from Jerusalem. During the early part of their rule, life on Gozo was not much improved from that of the Arab rule and in July 1551 things took a turn for the worse when The Citadel in The Capital Victoria was put under siege by The Turks. The local population was caught off-guard and around 5000 people, the entire population, were enslaved. This is considered to be a very traumatic time in Gozitan history and it took the Island many years to recover. Many of the slaves were sold off to foreign owners throughout the world. In order to repopulate the Island, people from Malta were encouraged to come over but it is thought people from Sicily also came over to Gozo. The French took possession of the Island on the 10th June 1798. It was very much a short lived occupation of the Island and The Gozitans regained control of their Island until 1800 when Great Britain took control over the Maltese Islands. Malta and Gozo officially became British Sovereign territory in 1813 and the rule

lasted until the 21st September 1964 when the Islands gained their independence. The Ministry of Gozo was established in 1987 and it acts as an executive function for the Island. Due to it’s central location, probably the best place to start your cultural tour of the Island is within the Citadel, which is the focal point of the Capital, Victoria. The Citadel houses a good number of museums that offer visitors the opportunity to see how Gozo was 300 years ago. The views from the top of the Citadel offer some of the best on the Island, don’t forget to bring your camera and pop into Cafe San Martino for a bite to eat and a drink.

Ta’ Kola Windmill is one of the few surviving windmills on the Maltese Islands. Located in the Village of Xaghra its origin goes back to 1725 at the hands of Manoel Foundation. Manoel Foundation charged itself with building up windmills to sustain the flour demand of the increasing population of Malta and Gozo. Ta’ Kola Windmill is a tangible example of rural economy and domestic Gozitan life during past centuries.

TOTAL GUIDE NATURAL BEAUTY

Dwejra

Ggantija

Dwejra All visitors, past and present, cannot fail to be amazed by the natural beauty that is on offer at Dwejra, visitors are quite literally spoilt for choice with an array of geological master pieces dominating the landscape. The first thing you will notice as you are making your way down into Dwejra is the Azure Window, a spectacular natural rock formation featuring a natural arch. The stunning geography of the area was created hundreds of years ago when two limestone caves collapsed. It is easy to understand why film producers have produced several blockbuster movies on the site. For the divers amongst our readers there is a fantastic dive site called the Blue hole which can be found just in front of the Azure Window. The Blue Hole has been voted into the top ten European Dive sites and it is easy to understand why it is a favourite amongst divers. The hole consists of an underwater arch that once navigated leads divers into the open sea. The Inland Sea, found to the right of the Azure Window is a beautiful natural lagoon, popular with swimmers and divers a like, a natural man made tunnel leads to the open sea and during the summer months it is possible to take a trip on one of the many fishing boats through the tunnel into the open sea. At time of printing a 15 minute boat ride cost €3.50. There is a sea-front café that serves snacks and drinks and the most wonderful homemade chips. The Inland Sea is a great spot for some leisurely swimming but take care when entering the water as it can be quite rocky, water-shoes are advised. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel and flippers. As you leave the Inland Sea and head back towards the car park you will find the Chapel of St Anne, one of the newest chapels built on the Island, dating back to 1963. The feast of St Anne is celebrated on the 26th July. In front of the Azure Window you will notice a large rock located just off the mainland. This is called Fungus rock and legend has it that the plants grown on it hold special medicinal powers. The Knights Hospitaller apparently discovered the fungus and used it as a styptic dressing for wounds and a cure for dysentery. The Knights so prized it that they often gave gifts of Malta Fungus to distinguished noblemen and visitors to the Maltese islands. Grand

Master Pinto decreed the Rock out of bounds in 1746; trespassers risked a three-year spell as oarsmen in the Knights' galleys. He posted a permanent guard there and even built a precarious cable-car basket from the rock to the mainland, 50 metres away. He also ordered the sides smoothed to remove handholds. The number 302 bus runs between Dwejra and Ramla Bay (via Victoria) on an hourly basis between 05.39am and 22.39pm The Ggantija Temples, a world heritage site, are found south of the Village of Xaghra. Ggantija, meaning giant in Maltese is a neolithic, megolothic temple complex dating back to c3600-2500 BC, making the temples more than 5500 years old. The temples were possibly the site of a Fertility cult; archeologists believe that the numerous figurines and statues found on site are connected with that cult. According to local Gozitan folklore, a giantess built these temples and used them as places of worship. Two temples make up the site, the southerly one is the larger, more older site and is in a better state than the northenly one. The temples are built in the typical clover-leaf shape, with inner facing blocks marking the shape which was then filled in with rubble. This led to the construction of a series of semi-circular apses connected with a central passage. Archaeologists believe that the apses were originally covered by roofing. The structures are all the more impressive for having been constructed at a time when no metal tools were available to the natives of the Maltese islands, and when the wheel had not yet been introduced. Small, spherical stones have been discovered. They are believed to have been used as ball bearings to transport the enormous stone blocks required for the temples' construction. Ggantija is run by Heritage Malta, www.heritagemalta.org and Entry to the temples costs €5 for adults, €3.50 for 12-17 year olds and €2.50 for OAP’s. For the entry fee visitors also have access to Ta’Kola windmill located in Xaghra. The number 322 bus operates between Marsalforn and Mgarr via Xaghra between 05.10am and 22.25 every 1.5 hours. The number 307 operates every hour between Kercem and Xaghra (via Victoria) between 05.47am and 22.47pm.

Calypso’s Cave

Saltpans Ta’Cenc Cliffs

Aquaduct Calypso’s Cave is found a short distance from the Village of Xaghra and over looks the golden sands of Ramla Bay. The cave is named after the nymph Calypso. In the story ‘The Odyssey’, Odysseus was kept as a prisoner of love for seven years by the nymph Calypso, Calypso lived on an Island called Ogygia and it is believed that the Island being referred to as Ogygia was in fact Gozo. The view of Ramla Bay from Calypso Cave is nothing short of spectacular and is worth visiting for this alone. Ninus Cave is a fabulous cave with stalactites and stalagmites located at the back of a private house on 15 January Street in Xaghra. The cave was discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa. Open daily between 8am and 18:00pm. Not too far from Ninnus Cave you will find Xerri’s Grotto, an underground cave discovered in 1924 by the owners Grandfather who discovered the cave whilst digging a well. Further caves were found whilst the family were building an air raid shelter during the 2nd world war. Visitors can see stalacite and stalagmite formations including some interesting speleothems in the form of an elephants ear’s, a tortoise and a giraffe. Xerri’s Grotto can be found on Xerri Street. Opening hours, Mon to Sat, 09.00am to 18.00pm, entrance fee is €2.50. Ta’Cenc and the Sanap Cliffs offer some wonderful coastal walks. The Ta’Cenc cliffs are the highest in Gozo at some 150m above sea level, the views from the cliffs are amazing, bring your camera, a bottle of water and put on plenty of sun cream. We recommend

starting your walk at the village of Sannat, head south past the left hand side of the Church and follow signs for the Hotel Ta’Cenc, take the country track to the south and then proceed to the west where the cliffs will take you to Mgarr Ix-Xini. Sea-Salt has been produced in Gozo for hundreds of years and it is a cottage industry that has been passed down families throughout the generations. The Gozo Salt Pans are found to the North of the Island just west of Marsalforn past Obajar Bay. These ancient salt pans are still worked by the locals during the summer, a simple process, high tides fill the salt pans; the sun evaporates the water leaving salt. The salt is then stored and processed within Caves that have been carved into the rocks. The salt can be purchased directly from the producer and you certainly won’t get any fresher salt than from here. As you take the road out towards Ta’Pinu from Victoria you will come across The Old Aquaducts. They were built in the 19th Century and were used to carry water from Għar Ilma hill to a purpose built reservoir in Victoria. Building started in 1839 and finished in 1843 when the first water was available in a fountain in Sabina Square, in Victoria. Unfortunately the Aqueducts fell to progress in the form of electrical pumps but Għar Ilma hill is still renowned for it’s fresh water. The aqueducts come to life during the winter months when they are surrounded by lush green scenery. mygozo magazine Page 11

TOTAL GUIDE CHURCH LIFE

Gozo is blessed with 22 churches in total, some dating back as far as the 15th century. Where ever you go on Gozo there is a church waiting around the corner and their beauty is not to be ignored. They are very much the focal point of Village life and the annual festa’s honouring the Church’s Patron Saint is an exciting time for Gozitans and tourists. The Citadella, in Victoria was built between 1697 and 1711 and sits within the fortress of the Citadel. The church’s feast is celebrated on the 15th August each year and is dedicated to the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Santa Maria, this is one of the biggest feasts held on Island. It is a baroque Cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafà, the Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina. It is said that it lies on the site where a Roman temple dedicated to Juno once stood. It is most famous for the remarkable trompe l'oeil painting on its ceiling, which depicts the interior of a dome that was never built. The Basilica of Ta’Pinu is Malta and Gozos most popular place of pilgrimage. Legend has it that prayers said in the chapel saved Gozo from the plague. Numerous miracles and acts of God have been manifested at the Basilica. The origins of the Shrine of Our Lady of ta' Pinu are relatively unknown. In 1575 the apostolic visitor Pietro Duzina was delegated by Pope Gregory XII to visit the Maltese Islands. In his pastoral visit to the church, he found that it was in a very bad state and he ordered the Church to be closed and demolished.

When demolition began the workman broke his arm while striking the first blow. This was taken as an omen that the chapel should not be demolished. The church was the only chapel on the island to survive Duzina's decree ordering the demolition of other similar chapels. Pinu Gauci became the procurator of the church in 1598 and its name was changed from "Of the Gentile" to "Ta` Pinu", meaning "Of Philip". In 1611 Gauci offered money for its restoration. It was rebuilt, with a stone altar erected and investments for liturgical services provided. Gauci also commissioned the painting of the Assumption of Our Lady for the main altar. This was done in 1619 by Amadeo Perugino. In 1883, Karmni Grima was walking past the now run down church and heard a voice asking her to recite three Hail Marys'. Over the following years miracles were attributed to the grace of Our Lady of The Assumption to whom the church was dedicated. The works for the new church began on 30 May 1922, to be consecrated on 31 August 1932. It was built in a neo-romantic style. Inside the church there are 6 mosaics, 76 colored windows and many ex-voto. The bell tower is 61 metres high. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass on the parvise of the shrine during his visit to the island of Gozo on 26 May 1990. On 18 April 2010, when visiting Malta, Pope Benedict XVI donated and placed a Golden Rose in front of the devotional image of Our Lady Of Ta' Pinu which was brought over from Gozo to Malta for this special occasion. The Pope invited everybody to "Pray to Her under the Title Queen of the Family"

TOTAL GUIDE CHURCH LIFE

St George’s Basilica situated in Victoria is a beautiful church, found in St George’s Square it was originally built in the 1670s. A new façade was built in 1818 due to damage done during an earthquake. The dome and the aisles are of recent construction (1930s and 1940s). There are several works of art in the church which include the painting of the dome and ceiling by Gian Battista Conti of Rome and other paintings and sculptures by Mattia Preti, Giuseppe d'Arena, Stefano Erardi, Alessio Erardi, Francesco V. Zahra, Giuseppe Calì, and contemporary Alfred Camilleri Cauchi and John L. Grima. The titular statue of St George was carved from solid wood by Pietro Paolo Azzopardi in 1838 and is the first titular statue on the island. The area over which the church is built is of considerable archaeological interest, with evidence of activity dating back to at least to the Roman period. The parish celebrates two feasts during the year: 23 April, the official date celebrating the death of the martyr, and the third Sunday of July, when the solemn festivities in honour of Gozo's patron saint are held.

The village of Xewkija is dominated by its Rotunda Parish Church, dedicated to St John the Baptist. It became the first parish outside Victoria on 27 November 1678. The church was initially built thanks to Bishop Michael Molina, who after visiting Xewkija decided that the local villagers deserved at better place to pray and attend mass. The church is capable of housing 3000 people, the population of the Village. The church is the largest on Gozo and was built by Maltese stone and was designed by Josepth D’Amato. The current church was completed in 1952 and replaced an older Church that occupied the site. The Feast is celebrated on the 24th June each year. The rotunda dome is 75 metres high making it one of the largest in Europe. Other Notable Churches can be found in the Villages of Gharb, San Lawrenz, Ghasri, Zeebug, Xaghra, Nadur, Ghajnsielem, Sannat and also on the Island of Comino. mygozo magazine Page 13

TOTAL GUIDE FESTA TIME

Visiting a Village Festa During Your Stay On The Island Is a Must Any visitor to Gozo is sure to return with photos of fireworks and religious ceremonies taken during one of the many religious festivals that take place throughout the year. If you are lucky enough to be on the Island whilst a feast is taking place then you are in for a real treat. Gozitans take their village feasts seriously and rivalry between the different patron saints is something akin to that of two local football teams, T-shirts are worn depicting the colour of the feast and during the Feasts there is lots of singing and celebration. The Village’s really do look their best during Festa time, Churches's are lit up and shown in their full glory and flags and banners adorn the local houses. During Festa time it is a great opportunity to taste some real Gozitan/Maltese products including savory and sweet dishes. Feasts have been taking place on the Island for hundreds of years and are held to celebrate the Patron Saint of the Town/Village, each Parish celebrates at least one feast during the year. The highlight of any feast is normally a fireworks extravaganza and Gozo knows how to put on a fireworks show to rival any in the world. Two of the largest feasts on the Island are held in Victoria where in July, The Feast of St George is celebrated and in August when the feast of Santa Maria takes place. Both of these feasts are a cacophony of sound and colour. The St George's feast takes place this year on the 21st July, there are various activities which take place in around the Parish during the day including horse racing, music by the renowned La Stella Band Club and the carrying of the statue of St George into the beautiful basilica around 10pm. The feast of Santa Maria, is celebrated on the 15th August every year and celebrates the The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, due to the long weekend this is one of the more busier feasts and many Maltese pop over to enjoy the long weekend. The feast is celebrated throughout the weekend and activities include horse racing up Republic Street. This date also see's the Islands celebrating the anniversary of the arrival of the Santa Marija convoy vessel which arrived in Malta on the 15th August 1942 carrying much needed food supplies to the war damaged islands.

Gozo Lace - A Dying Art Guest writer Teri Hardy, from California, USA is a passionate cook, photographer and traveller, on her most recent visit to Gozo in 2013, Teri had the privilege of meeting one of Gozo’s last remaining authentic Lace makers, here Teri shares her story.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

............................................... It was her spritely invitation to “Come, look,” that first caught my attention. I had been leisurely wandering the winding lanes near St. George’s Square in the ancient heart of the old capital of Victoria, Gozo when I passed an ornate black iron gate into a narrow forecourt from which the voice beaconed. There sat a bright-eyed white haired lady with her beautifully hand-crafted creations hanging from a cord attached to the old stone wall of her courtyard. They were exquisitely and skillfully crafted works of silk lace: glossimer, delicate and lovely beyond belief. The design of the Maltese Cross incorporated in her work is especially interesting. Her name is Antoinette Portelli and she told me she is one of the last remaining ladies who still does lace work on the island. She has been making lace for nearly 80 years, having learned as a very young girl. She and her eight sisters and three brothers were born in the house of her grandparents, where she still lives. Her parents had been born in the same house, too. She went to school on Republic Street, very close to where The Duke is now located. Now she makes lace for pleasure, and by her chatty nature, I know she blossoms with each and every person that stops to admire her creations and chat with her for awhile.

@terihardy @terihardy

Lace making has a long tradition on this island. Life in Gozo and much of rural Malta was relatively harsh and craft industries became a main source of income for rural families. Lace manufacture continued on the island until the 19th century, when the depression nearly led to its extinction. Although this is very much a traditional Maltese art, it is not as widely practiced as it was one hundred years ago. Lace can trace its origins to Venice in the 16th century - “needle lace” as it was called in those days.

Contemporary Craft...Desirable Designs

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Wander through Victoria’s historical back streets and you’ll come across small traditional businesses such as tailors, shoe repairers, lace makers, statue restorers, carpenters and stone carvers. But perhaps less expectedly, this area is also where you’ll find ‘Prickly Pear’, retail home to work by some of Gozo’s more modern designers and makers. Prickly Pear was established by Rachel Robinson, a UK trained jeweller who moved to Gozo in 2008. Working from home, Rachel found that there were no suitable local outlets for her sterling silver designs, “It seemed such a shame that my work was all being sent abroad and that no one got to view it locally”, said Rachel. “I started to meet some other high quality makers whose work I liked, and eventually I realised that if we wanted an outlet to showcase our work I would have to start one myself!” Prickly Pear opened in Spring 2012 and was awarded ‘Craft Retailer of the Year’ by the Ministry of Commerce just ten months later. This summer the shop is showing work by ten makers from Gozo, five from Malta and five international artists. Products range from metal wall art, small stone sculptures and ceramic bowls and silk scarves and a large range of jewellery in silver other materials. There is also a selection of colourful imported products with eye catching designs. To support contemporary craft in Gozo and Malta, visit www.makersmarkmalta.com

Rachel says “I still have my workbench in the shop so I can make my popular lace and leaf patterned work between customers, and continue to work on new designs and exhibition pieces. Its much more social than working from home, and I enjoy talking to visitors about all the artists and their techniques and arranging for new pieces to be commissioned. The shop is only tiny, but its amazing how long some people take to look around. People tell me it’s a real treasure chest!”

TOTAL GUIDE SALT PANS

@terihardy

@terihardy

Head to the North of The Island and just to the west of Marsalforn, near Qbajjar Bay, you will stumble across the remarkable Salt Pans, Gozo’s commercial source of Fresh sea salt. Laid bare in all their glory, the Salt Pans are a strong statement of Gozo of old, one that used it’s natural resources to make a living. That the Salt Pans are still in existence today are testament to one family, The Cini family who have been farming salt on Gozo for the past best part of 250 years. The cultivation of the salt is itself a simple but beautiful process. During the hotter months, the sea enters the man made Salt Pans and then slowly drys throughout the summer months leaving a salt crystalisation. This is then collected and harvested in the man made caves.

pumped into the smaller pans. Some of them have names, such as 'It-Twil' (the long one), 'Tal-Blata' (the rocky one), 'L-Imkisser' (the broken one) and 'TasSalib' the latter getting its name from the cross carved in the rocks. The Cini family have a lot to thank the Romans for as it was they who all those years ago arranged the pans into square grids with a unique irrigation system. A trip to Gozo wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Salt Pans, Emmanuel and his family will be more than happy to tell you about their tradition and it’s a great opportunity to pick up some sea salt whilst you are there. ///////////////////////////////////////////////

The season runs from around May until September and Emmanuel Cini and his daughter Josephine work over 350 pans. They say that each pan cultivates around 4kg of Sea Salt, some will be exported but the majority will stay on the Island, is packaged and then sold in local supermarkets and souvenir shops. The Cini’s are certainly keeping their carbon footprint close to zero. The Salt Pans in Gozo have been around for more than 350 years and this ancient trade has been passed down from family to family. Known locally as the Xwejni Salt Pans, the Cini family have been working these pans for the last 40 years and little has changed during that time, this is as close to working the land as it gets. The salt pans in Xwejni include 12 reservoirs. These reservoirs are what are called warming pans, they are large enough to hold plenty of sea water which is then

f you are reading this and you are from the UK, Ireland, Malta or Italy, chances are that if you are into your condiments and especially Ketchup, then the bottle sitting on your table could well have been made in Gozo.

The beginning of the tomato season is a big deal around these shores. It’s an exciting time for the company and normally starts around July time. Around 150 employees are involved in one form or another at the start of the harvesting process. Once the local farmers have been visited and the quality of their crop stringently checked and vetoed, the first wave of trucks begin to bring the tomatoes to the processing plant. A military operation is in place and it’s some sight as a mini village of tents is constructed to welcome the trucks and weigh the tomatoes as they come through the gates. Once all of the formalities are in place, the real fun begins. Tradition dictates that the youngest member of the Magro family,

Book Review

The Gozo Table

..................................................... Speak to anyone who has visited Gozo and when you ask them what the food was like, i’m pretty sure that the vast majority will say that it was excellent. The Gozitan food scene has been in change mode now for the last couple of years and chefs such as Georg Borg are leading that revolution. They are taking the food back to it’s roots and designing dishes that really make the most of what this Island has to offer from a culinary perspective, whether that’s local sea salt, sun-dried tomatoes, lemons or even nettles, why import food from abroad when it is grown on your own doorstep. Throughout Gozo you will now see local shops stocking local produce that has been hand made on the Island, including olive oil, peppered cheese and wonderful fresh pastes called Kunserva. I met George on a sunny May morning at The Ta’Mena Estate where he is technical Food director. George is now a well know face on The Maltese Islands, representing Gozo at overseas trade fairs as well as participating in Maltese Cookery programmes on TV. He also keeps himself busy as Joint Director of Connection caterers, a company who specialise in outdoor dining functions. In a nutshell George eats, sleeps and breathes food. Despite his rise up the culinary chain George is a humble man, he isn’t interested in having his own restaurant chain or michelin stars after his name, what interests George is working with the products Gozo has given him and designing new menu’s to get the taste buds flowing. George has been cooking now for the best part of 30 years, he grew up in the village of Sannat, where he still proudly lives, and learnt his cooking skills from his mother. His philosophy is simple, if it can be grown/reared/harvested locally then it can be made into wonderful food that is appreciated more as the local community has contributed to the meal on the plate. Over a cup of local coffee, myself and George are here to discuss his new book, The Gozo Table II, a follow up to the highly successful The Gozo Table. The Gozo Table II has over 80 of George’s recipes and

................................................ own unique twist. George feels that it is important that local produce isn’t taken for granted and that the local population remind themselves of what they have on their own door step. Another important message that George wants to get across, in this increasingly cost conscious consumer world we live in is not wasting food, but instead redesigning menus to make the most of the ingredients we have at our disposal. Throughout the book you will see reference to local Gozitans who contribute to the local food scene, including Dominic Xureb, one of Mgarr’s many fisherman and a group of local women from Xaghra who during the two weeks prior to Easter spend most of the day preparing, baking and selling an Easter version of the well known Maltese pie Qassatat. was compiled together by Hilda Maguire and Colm Regan. The amazing photography was done by Claire Borg, an upcoming chef on the Island in her own right. The first thing that George wants to highlight with the book is that local products are featured significantly in the recipes, the reason for this is two fold, firstly the local economy is boosted by consumers using local products and secondly for the sustainable future of the Island using local products is better for the environment and the carbon foot print. Well known to local readers of this magazine is Gbejna, local sheep’s cheese and George has used this extensively in his recipes, the reason being it’s versatility across multiple recipes. For George there are four important ideas that capture the essence of Gozitan and Maltese cooking that have also been the inspiration between the recipes in this book and they are local, fresh, seasonal and simple. After the success of his his first book, George received many requests from people asking to include their favourite family dishes, many of which have been passed down from generation to generation, whilst succumbing to some and including well known recipes, George has also updated them with his

Recipes in the book include Rabbit with strawberry sauce, figs, salted beef, sheeps cheese salad with walnut dressing and basil pannacotta with limon-e. This book really does epitomise local Gozitan food and is a must for anyone who is interested in local cooking, it is a great chance to take the book home and impress your friends.

Salini Salt Pans Before departing on this trip, I read that capers thrive on the island of Gozo. I was hoping I would be able to harvest some and take them home, but was afraid I would be visiting too early in the season to find any ready for harvest. I am so happy I was wrong! The caper plant thrives in stone walls and rocky crevices, and disdain rich earth. A cliff of limestone sends the capers into a fit of ecstatic growth, which is exactly where I discovered them while on a walk looking for wild rosemary to flavour a soup I was preparing. Capers have a history stretching back to Pharaonic times. Tightly rooted in a wall crack or rock crevice, it bushes out gallantly during the most arid months of the Mediterranean summer. Small buds, closed tight as fists, spring daily from the long shoots, opening eventually into exquisitely delicate white flowers with violet pistils and stamens which last no more than 24 hours and look like butterflies at rest. They then leave behind a stem with a tiny seed pod th

I have been taking photos of the Island of Gozo , my home island since my returning back from Toronto in 1991. In the past I used to video a lot but then I switched to stills when one of my new video camera took also pictures. Since that day I haven’t looked back and it’s the camera every time for me, and maybe that is why my photos are in sequence because I still think I am shooting videos.. north wind is occasionally reaching severe gale force at times. It is a fact that we just experienced the second highest March windspeed since 1970, and the weather for the previous three months was drier and windier than usual. For some individuals wind is irrelevant, for others it is make or break. Going through our photos we came across this particular photo showing a woman fighting against the elements in order to earn her living. When it comes to salt extraction, we are lucky if we have a double and sometimes a triple harvest. The salterns are filled with water round the beginning of May, and then the salt is collected first at the beginning of August and again at the beginning of September. If the good weather holds, there is a third harvest at the beginning of October. In mid-September 2012, weather conditions were volatile and the salt harvest was threatened.

A little further along from the Moby Dick you will find one of the newest arrivals on the Xlendi foodie scene, The Boat House. As the name suggests, this restaurant is housed within an old converted boathouse and is full of character, it has an almost New England feel to it. The owners are seasoned restaurateurs and they certainly know how to put together a menu and please their customers. In 2014 The Boat House was awarded one of the top 40 restaurants in the Maltese Islands by the The Definitive (ly) Good Guide. Specialities include fresh fish and seafood, live lobsters and shell fish, suckling pig, Argentinean and Irish beef. A vast wine cellar of over 200 different wines helps to ease your dinner down. (Marina St, Xlendi, +356 21569153). Reservations are recommended. Two doors away from The Boat House is a gem of a restaurant called Ta’Karolina. Tucked away in the corner of the bay, the restaurant is named after the cave it sits in front of. This restaurant is busy both day and night and it is easy to understand why. Joseph and his team run a well oiled machine and the kitchen consistently serve dishes of the highest quality. Sea-food is the order of the day here, the fisherman literally anchor right in front of the restaurants doors and next to the restaurant you will find fisherman’s huts where the nets are fixed after a tough day at sea. Ta’Karolina also serves up fantastic fresh pasta and meat dishes. (Marina St, Xlendi, +356 21559675). An extremely

welcome addition to not only the Xlendi food scene, but also the Gozitan dining scene is the Sapana Indian restaurant. Gozo hasn’t had an Indian restaurant for over 20 years, but it has been worth waiting for. The team at Sapana know what a curry experience is all about and the menu serves up all of the Indian classics. The menu lives up to its expectations and the guys here certainly know their curries. The mixed starter platter is a must. (Rabat Rd, Xlendi, +356 21562100). Not all of the best restaurants are necessarily found on the sea-front, and a newcomer in 2014 is Il Kcina Ghawdxija, which literally means the Gozitan Kitchen. Set up by seasoned restauranteur, Charlie Bonnici, the remit of the menu is local Gozitan food, and it is the only restaurant in Xlendi that serves only local Gozitan food. The team really want their clients to experience the Islands Rich culinary experience. Dishes include Minestra and Pulpetti tal-hut, Imqarrun il-forn and Torta tal-fenek. If you want to experience authentic Gozo food then this is the place to go. (Mount Carmel St, Xlendi, +356 2156 9118). IL Terrazzo, to the left of the bay as if you are looking out to sea, has one of the best terraces to consume a meal on the Island. Perched above the sea and with commanding views of both the cliffs and Xlendi, it’s very easy to while away a lazy sunday afternoon or a summers evening on the terrace, it offers you your own peaceful tranquility from the bustle of daily life. Owner Reggie Vella has transformed Il Terrazzo over the last couple of years and it offers a menu to reflect it’s modern, chic exterior. The A' La Carte, Mediterranean menu is varied and offers a choice of dishes which include Antipasti, selection of Pasta Dishes, Fresh Fish specialities, local cuisine and much more besides. (St Simon St, +356 2156 2992) The Pirates Galley, located on the waterside is a new addition to the waterfront and offers great value for money pasta, meat dishes, pizza’s, burgers and a mean breakfast. It’s a great place to set up and watch the world go by and watch divers enter the water beneath your feet. There is also live music at least once a week.

CAPITAL

VICTORIA

@terihardy Victoria, Gozo’s Capital City, otherwise known as Rabat to the locals, is a hustling, bustling City with a very busy feel to it during the day. Victoria wakes up around 6am when the local work force head for work and pop into the numerous bars for a coffee and Pastizzi, a simple, but delightful Gozitan pastry normally made of Cheese or Pea. One of the busiest bars is Tapie’s Bar in San Francisk Square, a visit to Gozo wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this truly local bar where you can sit outside and watch the world go about their daily business. Shopping, Most of Gozo’s shopping is done in Victoria and there are three excellent shopping arcades, two found at the lower end of Republic Street and one at the upper end. The Duke Plaza, the newest plaza in Gozo, houses a large supermarket where you can buy everything from fresh fish to fishing rods, as well as fashion shops, restaurants, bars and a Spa which has an in-door swimming pool. The Arkadia Centre, a little further down from the Duke also has a large supermarket, pharmacy, Mc Donalds and numerous UK High Street fashion shops. The original shopping arcade, Tigrija Palazz is located at the top end of Republic Street and has a large supermarket selling all essential goods. A daily market takes place in Independence Square, also known as It-Tokk, where you can buy anything from Sea-Bass to Sun Hats. Just behind Independence Square you will find St George’s Square which is home to a great shop called, Organika which sells lots of locally produced products, arts and crafts by local artists and organic

products as the name would suggest. They have also just opened a sister shop opposite called Lazuli which sells fair trade clothing. For handcrafted jewellery we recommend visiting Prickly Pear Designs who make their own pieces of jewellery as well as featuring work from local Gozitan and International designers. See www.pricklypeargozo.com for further details or visit their shop at 96 Triq San Gorg. For unusual glass design work including windows, jewellary, pictures and souvenirs, there is a great shop called Dana’s Glass Art located in Savina Square. See www.danakranz.com for more details

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

stood. It is most famous for the remarkable trompe l'oeil painting on its ceiling, which depicts the interior of a dome that was never built. A new addition to The Gozitan Museum scene is IL Hagar, The Heart of Gozo, the museum is located in St George’s Square and the museum really bring out the full glory of the Gozitan people. Villa Rundle Gardens offer a green space within the heart of the City for Gozitans and Tourists a like to relax in a peaceful environment. The gardens are located next to the Duke Shopping Centre and they are named after the British General, Leslie Rundle. The gardens house exotic plants and trees from around the world and during Festa time it is home to competitions such as vegetable growing contests.

For the walkers I recommend the path along the coast from Hondoq Bay to Mgarr harbour, or walk around the salt pans towards "Wied il-Ghasri", a little fjord in the north of the island. For special guided trips book a nature walk with Martin who you`ll find in his restaurant "Il-Wileg" in Qala, or go around the countryside on wheels on a Seqway Tour with Kevin, both is fun and you´ll get to know a lot more about the island. Special highlight for art lovers, don`t miss out to visit Jörg Böttcher in his farmhouse gallery up in Zebbug

German Native Dana has made Gozo her home for the past 7 years. In her shop and atelier "Dana´s Glassart" in Savina Square (Victoria) you can find her at work creating the beads for her glass jewellery.

After coming to Gozo for holidays yearly since I was born I decided to move to this pretty island to open my own shop where I sell my Arts&Crafts made from glass. Many aspects make this island special for me, the friendly people, the simplicity of lifestyle- still away from commerce and bustle, the huge backdrop of history and last but not least the sunny climate and an overwhelming landscape.

For a bite to eat, head to "Gianni´s", my favourite restaurant on top of the street leading from Marsalforn up to Xaghra- besides an excellent dinner you´ll enjoy a stunning view over the valley and the sea - sunset included if you go early enough!

My favorite hideaways are places like Mgarr-ix-Xini, taking the road down is an adventure by itself. Snorkling there is fantastic and in the Bistro you can eat very good fresh fish. If you like more sandy beaches take the steep hill down to San Blas- it´s a little paradise and whilst there you can refresh yourself not just in the shallow water but also with a cool drink at Steve´s Kiosk.

XLENDI

Xlendi, is a picture postcard bay located to the south west of the Island and is a firm favourite amongst Gozitans, Maltese and Tourists a like. Many people are attracted to Xlendi due to the Waterside setting of the many bars and restaurants that line the quayside. There is also a small sandy beach and excellent sunbathing spots located around the bay and plenty of water sports activities to keep all of the family happy including canoeing, banana boats, pedalos and diving schools. Self-Drive motor boats can also be hired as well as fishing trips organised, see page ...Xlendi is home to over 20 restaurants that serve up fresh fish caught the same day, pasta, pizza, Indian, Chinese, and excellent meat dishes.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

As you would expect from a sea-front location, everything revolves around the water in Xlendi, hire a boat from Xlendi Pleasure Cruises and explore the bays around Xlendi or venture further a field to Comino or around the Island. Xlendi is home to several large caves including St Catherine’s Cave and Carolina's cave. Carolinas is found on the cliffs on the right hand side of the bay if you are looking out to the sea. The cave was once the property of Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria. In later years she founded the Augustinian Sisters on Gozo and donated almost all

SEAFRONT PARADISE

of her land, including the cave and other land in Xlendi to the sisters. During the summer months the Sisters would reside in Xlendi and would bath in the cave that offered them privacy from other swimmers as it could only be reaches by private stairs. St Catherine’s Cave is located to the right of the bay, just as you are entering Xlendi Bay, it is a popular place for snorkelers and divers alike owing to the crystal clear waters found in and around the cave. During the 17th Century, people in fact lived around the cave and it received its name after a Church that was built above the site and the Saint whom the Church was dedicated to. Unfortunately the church is longer on the site. At the Head of the Bay you will find an old watchtower dating back to 1650, it was built on the order of Grandmaster Lascaris and stands 35 ft square at its base and 30 courses high. Although visitors cannot go inside the watchtower, it is currently being restored, but it is well worth the walk, for sun seekers there are some fabulous bathing opportunities around the tower. The Watch Tower can be reached by following the coastal path to the left of the bay through the Kantra Valley and by taking the bridge that connects the headland to the land. Il-Kantra is a valley found to the left hand side of the bay close to the watchtower. The name Kantra derives

from Alcantara in Spanish-Sicilian. This is due to the odd shape of the valley that resembles a bow. Il-Kantra is home to many types of flora and fauna, these are allowed to flourish as the valley isn’t populated. The Watchtower is reached by a bridge built by the Knights of Saint John over the Kantra Valley. In 1955 During British rule of the Maltese Islands several emergency mills were built that were capable of producing flour for the Islands if a Cold War was to break out. One of these mills was excavated in the cliffs behind The Mount Carmel Church, in Xlendi, and is the only one left intact on Malta and Gozo. The excavation of the mill was a huge undertaking, cumulating in an entrance tunnel some 30 metres long, and a 3 storey chamber that housed the grinding and milling equipment, thankfully the mill was never put into use, but there are plans to restore the mill to its former glory as most of the original equipment is still inside. The church in Xlendi is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and dates back to 1868. On the first Sunday of September each year a feast is celebrated in honour of Mount Carmel and it is a really enjoyable weekend to be in Xlendi. During the day water games are held in the bay, with the traditional 'gostra' a greasy pole that you have to climb to seize a flag, proving very popular. mygozo magazine Page 36

Meet The Local

.................................................................................................................................................... Gozitan Joanna Magro, works at her family company, Magro Brothers and is studying for a Degree in Business, she shares with us her love of Gozo and tips.

Due to the island's small size, Gozo might seem to be restricting for some young adults but this is not the case, Gozitan youths try to come up with different ways to have fun. My friends and I organise barbeques, spend whole afternoons at the beach on a relaxing day, go out for walks or tracking, watch shooting stars on a calm summer night, organise camping trips, chill-outs, parties, wear costumes during Carnival and drink wine by the fire on calm winter nights.

Gharb is a beautiful Village, located west of Victoria about a ten minute drive away. Gharb is one of the oldest Villages on the Island and derives it’s name from Arabic, although in Maltese it means ‘’West’’ and it is in fact the western most Village on the Island. Gharb started life as a small hamlet hundreds of years ago and was originally populated by farmers who worked the fertile land. You can see it’s ancient roots in the centre of the Village where some houses have fine examples of decorated stone balconies. Gharb is quintessentially Gozitian and it’s main square, with the church dominating, has been the scene of many a postcard throughout the years. The village is home to many traditional Gozitan industries and is still home to traditional lace and cotton makers. The Parish of Gharb is the second oldest Parish on Gozo, the current church, built in 1699 is dedicated to the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth. The feast is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in July. Gharb lies amongst some of the most scenic countryside on the Island, particularly at Dbiegi, the largest hill on Gozo. San Lawrenz, Gharbs neighbour is also dominated by it’s Village Church and sqaure.

Nadur is Gozo’s largest village with a population of just over 5000 people. Nadur means ‘’lookout’’ in Maltese and comes from the Arabic word nadara. Perched on a high hill with commanding views of Comino and Malta it is clear why Nadur was an ideal spot to look out for unfriendly enemies. Several watchtowers were built in and around Nadur , Ta’Kenuna Tower was built by the British in the 19th century and was used as a telegraph link between Gozo and Malta. From the tower you can see much of the Island and the views out towards the Comino channel are to die for. When the Knights of St John ruled the Island a tower was built by Grand Master Nicholas Cotoner and is known as Ta’Sopu tower. It is also called Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas Tower after the two bays it sits between. During the 1960’s a lot people from Nadur emigrated to the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, many of whom have now returned to the Village and their allegiances to the countries they emigrated to are shown in the flags hung outside their homes.

Xaghra, located to the North East of the Island is the second largest Village on the Island with a population of just over 4200 people. The village is perched on a high hill and has great views of much of the Island including Ramla Bay. In Maltese, Xaghra means ‘’wilderness’’, a term relating to its location on top of a hill. Many people believe that Xaghra was one of the inhabited parts of Gozo, and looking at the architecture of the village and its surroundings it is easy to understand why. The focal point of the Village is the Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church that stands today was built in 1815 and the church is covered in marble throughout. The Village feast is celebrated on the 8th of September and if you are on Gozo at the same time, a visit to the feast is a must. In the weeks prior to the village feast, the Xaghra Youth Centre organise the annual Xaghra Youth games, an annual event that revolves around the history of the village, Gozo and Malta and includes horse racing, the building of the Ggantija Temples, The Great Siege of 1565 and other events. If you are on Gozo around the 22nd August the games are a great family event.

Ferry Terminal

To Malta

Mgarr, Gozo’s port, is the gateway to the Island. As the ferry makes it way slowly into the harbour, Gozo’s beauty is immediate; Mgarr is a picturesque fishing village that hasn’t really changed much throughout the years. One of the most immediate sights will be the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto that sits high above Mgarr and is actually in the Village of Ghajnsielem, it is a gothic style church and was built 1924. In 2011 the church received a set of 8 new bells with the largest weighing 5.5 tonnes. Ghajnsielem celebrates its annual feast on the last Sunday in August. As you would expect from a major port the main activity in Mgarr revolves around the fishing industry and the harbour is full of fishing vessels, large and small. There are no beaches in Mgarr but just around the corner to the east, you will find Hondoq Bay, a shingle beach that offers good swimming facilities. Comino is a short distance across the water from Mgarr. WHERE TO EAT Diners are spoilt for choice with an abundance of high quality restaurants in Mgarr. As you would expect, fresh sea-food is the order of the day but there are top quality restaurants serving a la carte food including Gozitan, Mediterranean and Chinese food. We recommend IT-Tmun, the sister restaurant to Patricks Tmun in Victoria, it serves fusion and international cuisine. Tel: 2156 6276 for reservations. Also highly recommended is L’Ankra, located on Shore St specialises in excellent Italian food, Tel: 2155 5656 for reservations. HISTORY/SIGHTS/WHAT TO SEE AND DO There is a new waterfront area called

Żewwieqa Waterfront' which involved rehabilitating the area known as Taż-Żewwieqa into a waterfront area by creating pedestrian zones, landscaped plazas including seating area with open sea views, an area hosting the restored Dgħajsa tal-Latini and an informal stage structure. It’s a lovely sport for a walk. Ferry services have operated between Gozo and Malta as far back as 1241 when the fishing industry was firmly established on the Island. As the fishing industry grew, so did Mgarr and communities begun to spring up around the vicinity of the harbour, especially more towards the hillside areas. The actual port area didn’t see any development until 1841 when a breakwater was built to provide extra protection. Throughout the 20th and 21st century the breakwater was extended several times and in 2008 a new ferry terminal accommodating 600 passengers and 200 cars was finally completed at a cost of €9.3 million. The new ferry terminal now allows the larger cruise ships that would normally visit Malta to stop on Gozo and allow cruise passengers a chance to see what Gozo has to offer. There are now plans to further develop the area with the creation of the Zewwieqa Waterfront, transforming parts of the port that are not in use into a family oriented space including restaurants, open spaces and restaurants.

General Bonaparte. Several British regiments were stationed at the fort during the Crimean and First World Wars but fell into disrepair during the 20th century. Fort Chambray is now being developed into a luxury village community of apartments and villa’s with communal pools and opens spaces. See www.fortchambray.com for further details.

Sitting above Mgarr Harbour to the left is Fort Chambray, an old historic city located within a fortress. Built over 250 years ago during the reign of the Knights of St John, the fort was initially built as a replacement to the Citadel in Victoria. There was also a thought that building the fort would increase trade between Gozo and Malta. The Fort was only ever used once for military purposes, in 1798, during Gozo's defense against the revolutionary forces of

Located in the picturesque harbour of Mgarr, Tmun, has been setting high standards on the Gozitan food scene for the last 25 years. Husband and wife team, Leli and Jane, joined by their son, Paul, have justifiably been rated one of the best restaurants on the Island year after year. The family set high standards and constantly strive to improve their menu with new twists to modern classics. At their quayside restaurant in Mgarr harbour diners can relax in a modern environment whilst literally dipping their toes into the sea. Sitting outside Tmun, enjoying a beautifully prepared meal whilst watching the local fisherman bring in their catch is a joy to be-hold. Tmun is renowned for it’s seafood, as you would expect due to the location, but also serves excellent meat and vegetarian dishes. B&B managers in Gozo

Jayne and Nigel Clutterbuck left the UK to set up a B&B on Gozo in January 2014, their B&B, called Ellie Boo is located in Xaghra, Jayne reveals the story behind their adventure...

W

’ e’d know each other as teenagers in Northwood, Middlesex, but had led separate lives until we found each other on facebook 25 years later. Nigel was in the process of getting divorced and was in Canada, while I had two children, but, after a disastrous gastric bypass, felt my life was in the balance. We fell in love with Gozo after visiting an old friend in Malta a few times and decided to get married there. While looking for a B&B for our guests, we happened upon a lovely farmhouse with a beautiful courtyard - a sort of coup de foudre. The wedding was called off - I was too ill - but we still wanted to return to Gozo. Nigel, a recovery driver, had an interview in Malta, and while we were on the Island we looked at some farmhouses with a view to opening a B&B. We had our eye on a new farmhouse, but it’s construction was delayed, and, with our heart set on moving to Gozo at the beginning of 2014, we looked at alternatives. The Frank Salt Agency showed us some pictures of alternative farmhouses, available for rent. We recognised ‘’our courtyard’’ immediately, and knew we had to have it. I’d been so ill, and, with both of

us hitting 50 within a year, we decided it was now or never - we needed to make it work. I knew I would miss my son and daughter and have three grandchildren under five, back in the UK, but at least the flights are cheap. With no central heating in the sandstone farmhouses, the winters can be a bit chilly on Gozo. Our English neighbour is fed up with the cold winters and is moving to Australia, but it is only for two months of the year so bit as bad as the UK. We intend to rent the farmhouse for 10 years. Here on Gozo they encourage long-term rentals. The landlord cannot put up the price for three years and only after that by 10 per cent.

stayed in a lot, and I worked as a pub landlady for 15 years as well as palliative care, so think I have the right skills. We are both peoples people. We are now into the summer season and we have been busy so far, we’ve even had repeat bookers for next year. Guests have come from as far as The US and Australia, as well as local Maltese, British, German and French. We’ve styled the B&B as shabby chic, and I intend to showcase the crafts and furniture that I have made or up cycled to sell to guests. The B&B is named after my grand-daughter, Ellie. For reservations please see www.elliebooongozo.com or email elliebooongozo@live.com

The old farmhouse has four en-suite bedrooms and a private pool, so it is ideal for a B&B. In Gozo you are never more than 10 minutes from a beach, and Xaghra has one of the prettiest town squares on the Island. We are charging from €90-€120 per Night per room in high season (May - October) including breakfast. These prices drop to from €60 per night per room including breakfast during low season (November - April). Competitive rates compared with local alternatives. We’ve never run a B&B before, but mygozo magazine Page 53

TOTAL GUIDE WATERSPORTS

If you're reading this then the chances are that you are attending one of the many diving schools that are available on the island. Gozo is a very popular destination for many European, and in fact global divers and is known throughout the world as an excellent diving location with many caves, reefs and wrecks to explore. There are some excellent diving schools throughout the island and all of the diving schools on the island of Gozo adhere to the highest safety procedures. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver there are courses available for all levels. Diving is possible all year round and underwater visibility is more than 30 metres. One of the main advantages of diving in Gozo is that many of the dive sites are accessible from the shore. The dive schools on the island are generally led by well-qualified multilingual instructors who have many years experience of diving around the shores. If you are new to diving there are a few legal

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// requirements that have to be taken into consideration. The youngest age that you can dive is 10 years old and under 18’s will require written a parent or consent. Most of the courses on the island offer beginners courses which generally consist of 1 to 2 hours of actual classroom based teaching on equipment and safety procedures, you will then normally be introduced into shallow waters were you will practise breathing in the water and you would then usually dive for around half an hour in the sea. Expect to pay about €45 for a beginner's lesson, although cost will vary from school to school. All diving schools also offer more advanced and longer courses, including CMAS, BSAC and PADI qualifications and also the opportunity to rent equipment for more experienced divers who hold the relevant qualifications to dive unaccompanied. Gozo has some excellent dive sites these include Billinghurst Cave, the Blue Hole and Chimney, Coral Cave, Crocodile Rock, Double Arch Reef, Fessej Rock, Fungus Rock, Reqqa Point, San Dimitri Point, Ta’Cenc, Wied-IlGhasri, Xatt l’Ahmar and Xlendi Cave and Reef. Over the past 15 years several ex Gozo Channel Ferries have been scuttled around Gozo and provide an excellent artificial reef for divers. The MV Xlendi was originally scuttled in 1999 in the waters off IX-Xatt, just to the West of Mgarr. The MV Xlendi sits on the bottom of the ocean, some 40 metres deep and what makes it fascinating to divers is that it is positioned up-side down. In 2006, MV Xlendi

was joined by two more ships, The Comino Land and The Karwela. For beginners or advanced courses, see www.gozodiving.com If you don't fancy donning a wet suit there are some excellent snorkelling sites located throughout the Islands and we highly recommend the Blue lagoon on Comino, Mgarr-IXXini, The Inland Sea and San Blas Bay. A great way to see the island is by hiring a self drive motorboat. It is possible to go around the island in a day, and is a great way to spend a day in the sun, take a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Xlendi pleasure cruises offer self drive boats out of Xlendi Bay. They have various boats available is available, booking is available on the pier in Xlendi as well as at their booking office in Marsalforn . They also offer boat trips to Comino and around the Island. Please see www.xlendipleasurecruises.com or contact them on 0035699478119/2155 9967 for further details. Canoes, Kayaks, Jet Skis, pedalos and trips on a banana boat can be booked via Lewis, once again at the pier in Xlendi. Lewis can be contacted on 0035699427917. A stay on Gozo would not be complete without a trip to the blue lagoon on Comino.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO:

FUN TIME

GOZO SEGWAY Have you been in a City and seen people driving around on two wheels and wondered whats that ?, chances are it’s a segway here we have all of the answers... Have you been in a City and seen people driving around on two wheels and wondered what’s that? Chances are it’s a Segway Tour and here we have all of the answers... Local entrepreneur, Kevin Grech decided to set up the first Segway tours on the Island after experiencing the thrill and becoming addicted whilst on a holiday in Rome. To many people the notion of a Segway is new so let me explain the concept behind it. The Segway is a two-wheeled electric vehicle used as a convenient way to travel around towns and cities. It is a self-balancing device and its name is derived from the word "segue" which literally means "follows". The motorised scooter uses gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans. Riders lean backwards, forwards and to the left and right using a thin handlebar attached to a pole. It was designed by Dean Kamen, an American entrepreneur and inventor, and was unveiled in 2001 before being mass produced in 2002. The Segway has a top speed of around 20km/hr and is often used by workers in warehouses and on industrial sites as well as airports. It is promoted as the "greenest" way to travel. There are several models of Segway, including the Personal Transporter and Commuter models, and ones for thrill seekers and golfers. Kevin’s new business venture has opened up a whole new way to see the Island for tourists alike and he has made tours available in areas that the general public wouldn’t necessarily know of, such as the Sanap Cliffs and the area around Ta’Cenc. I joined Kevin on a recent tour and it really is a fun way to take in the Island, Kevin is a really informative guide and shares a few jokes along the way, he’s passionate about the Island he was born on and we know why. Kevin, tell us a bit about Gozo Segway Tours? Like you said, riding a Segway can be highly addictive, and we’ve been day dreaming about introducing this innovative concept to our home island ever since we returned from a holiday in Rome last year! Gozo has many breathtaking routes spread all around its coastline which provide a perfect spot to organise these sorts of activities! We studied this idea in detail and came up with 6 versatile tours ranging from relatively short, low-priced and easy routes to more adventurous, scenic and also romantic sunset tours. Hence we have something for everyone! Our guided tours are designed to help you

explore Gozo’s hidden beauties, without getting tired feet! Together we will stumble upon that perfect romantic spot where you can capture the perfect postcard photo to take back home with you... And at the same time our friendly local guides will provide you with some interesting anecdotes about Gozo’s historic landmarks! What is it like to glide on a Segway? Gliding on a Segway Personal Transporter feels like nothing you've ever experienced! Step on and your instincts take over. You'll quickly realize that the Segway PT will respond similarly to how you balance yourself – as if it were an extension of your body. Simply lean forward slightly and the PT will move in response. It all feels incredibly natural and really cool. Be aware that riding a Segway is highly addictive! I've never ridden a Segway before; will I be able to pick it up quickly? Your safety is always our highest priority; therefore, we begin each tour with a very thorough orientation of the Segway and its use before going out to enjoy the tour! Each of our tours will begin with a short safety talk followed by time to personally practice with your tour guide. We will take time to practice on the Segways until everyone feels comfortable. Are reservations required? Reservations are required for every tour we offer. All customers will be accommodated in the best possible manner based on guide and Segway availability. Our tours fill to capacity on a regular basis. For this reason we highly suggest making a reservation online or contacting us directly to make a reservation. We don't want to fill our tour and miss showing you around! Are tours cancelled in case of rain? No. Our tours operate rain or shine. We will provide you a free poncho if it’s raining! What else is included with a Gozo Segway Tour? With every tour we provide free on-site Training, a helmet (and a hair-net), a poncho (if it’s raining), photo/video documentation of your tour and refreshments with our longer routes. Can you pick us up from our hotel / farmhouse? Yes. If you have no means of transport, we can pick you up and take you back home for a small extra fee of 5 euro p.p.. For those of you staying in Malta, we can come pick you up from the Mgarr ferry terminal as well. Are the tours offered in any other languages? Or only English? No. Our tour guides also speak Italian, a little bit of French and German, and will

teach you some Maltese phrases along the way! How big will my group be? Keeping your well-being in mind, and to give you a more personal experience, our tours operate in groups of between 2 and 6 people per tour guide. We can operate with tours slightly larger, but will only do so in special situations. What if my party is more than 6 people? If the party is larger than 6, the group can be split up for any of our standard tours. We can take larger groups as private tours; however those are subject to different pricing and plans and must be made in advance to make allowances for tour guides and machines. (We can also provide bicycles / quad bikes for larger groups.) Can we bring light snacks or drinks along with us on our tour? Of course you can! However we advise that you put them - along with any other personal belongings - in a haversack or backpack so you can ride your Segway comfortably. If you like we can also prepare a light local snack for you, at a small extra cost. If interested, please discuss this when booking your tour in advance. (Please note that Gozo Segway Tours is owned by the same management team of ‘La Petite Creperie’, one of Gozo’s most popular mobile Kiosks – and therefore your snacks will be prepared by a qualified chef approved by the Food Safety Commission. Are there any age restrictions? For safety reasons, a person must be at least 12years old to ride a Segway. Minors (anyone under the age of 18) must be accompanied by an adult on the tour. Does the Segway PT have weight limits? Yes. Segway sets weight limits for rider safety and to reduce the risk of damage to a Segway PT. A rider must not be less than 100 lbs. (45 kg). The PT's maximum payload (which includes the rider and all cargo) is 260 lbs. (117 kg). The total weight of any handlebar cargo plus any additional attachments hanging from the handlebar should not exceed 10 lbs. (4.5 kg). Can I rent a Segway without a guide? Unfortunately, at the moment Segways can only be driven on certain country-side routes, pre-designated and approved by Transport Malta. For this reason, we do not normally rent Segways to individuals without a guide.

///////////////////////////////// Fancy getting off the Island for the day and renting a self-drive boat, here we tell you where to go and how to maximise your time at sea

I

f you fancy heading off land for the day and into your own magical world, hiring a boat is the ideal way to explore what this beautiful Island has to offer from the sea. Xlendi Water Sports based in Xlendi, as the name suggest , have some great self-drive speedboats, that you can hire at your leisure, either for a half day or a full day. A half day option gives you enough time to head over to The Blue Lagoon on Comino and a full day hire means that you can explore the coast of Gozo at your leisure, even circumnavigate it. We chose the full day option and opted for a 50hp Speed Boat which accommodates 4 adults and cost â‚Ź170.

stopping to take a photo of a fisherman who was perched high above the Sanap Cliffs and was tendering to his lobster pots that he hoisted some 200 feet up the cliff face. It looked like a fruitful day and i'm

No boat licence was required so after getting a safety demonstration and run through of the boat from Louis and his team we slowly made our way out of the beautiful Xlendi bay. Louis advised us to take a left out of the bay. It was a calm day so our passage out of the bay was smooth. Veering left out of Xlendi our first notable sight was the old Xlendi Tower at the head of the bay which used to protect the Island during the Knights of St John. There is local talk of the tower being renovated and made open to the general public. We made our way along the North Western coastline,

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// It was full steam ahead after lunch (we'd bought a delicious picnic with us we'd picked up in Victoria) as we headed south along the far western end of the Island, passing Hondoq bay, this stretch gave us the opportunity to get good speed out of the boat, we even passed a huge cruise ship which was making it's way over to Malta. Once past the southern point of the Island we made our way around and stopped off at San Blas Bay. It's another one of Gozo's secret locations and is accessed via the village of Nadur, beware of the climb back up the steep hill after though. The sea was warm and clean and allowed excellent snorkelling conditions. Two of us swam off the boat onto the beach and had a cool drink at the beach side bar, we even had a cheeky hamburger from the BBQ but didn't tell our wives. We could have stopped at San Blas Bay all afternoon but kicked on and headed East, passing the golden stretch of sand which is Ramla Bay and then the busy fishing village of Marsalforn. As we drove past there were several classic Gozitan fishing boats who were meandering back into port after a tough day at sea. To the east of Marsalforn we went past the infamous local salt pans, admiring their natural formation and really appreciating how locals have made a business out of sea salt farming. Again it was time to crank up the gears as we made

our way over to Dwejra, our last port of call for the day. Dwejra is located close to the Inland sea and has a beautiful bay behind called fungus rock, it's quiet and peaceful and a good place to relax and forget about the daily stresses of life. When we anchored there were several majestic yachts who had made their way down from France. After a great day touring the Island, we made our way back into Xlendi, just in time for an early evening glass of Cisk, well earned i’ll say !!!

GOZO

Magic Moments

Guest writer Teri Hardy, from Monteray, California, USA, is a passionate cook, photographer and traveller, Teri has fallen in love with The Island of Gozo and it’s people and is planning to spend then winter on Gozo, getting to know the Island more and really immersing herself into the local Gozitan traditions and way of life, if you see her around, say hello.

When did you first visit Gozo and how did a Californian come to visit Gozo ? I first visited Malta and Gozo in 2011. For years I had been interested in Malta, and the more I researched, the more I knew I wanted to include Gozo, and for longer than just "one day” as many guidebooks and travel articles suggested. I was bitten by the travel bug at a very early age in life, and have travelled extensively, off the beaten path, which is becoming more and more difficult as the world’s population continues to explode and more and more people are travelling. It is always wonderful to find a corner of the world that is still unspoiled!

Meet The ...

What was it that first struck you about Gozo ? The peace and tranquillity, set back in time. My first visit was in early May, so it was still quiet. And the longer I remained on the island, the more I fell under its spell. It has a sense of timelessness, which is very appealing. The Gozitans are warm, friendly and helpful. I love the slower pace and the gentle quality of life which I describe as “humane”, and also the safety. Many times, while living in Xaghra, I would walk back to my villa after 10 p.m. with not a worry. What does Gozo offer somebody who hasn't visited the Island before ? Lovely people, beautiful nature, clean seas, fabulous food (and cappuccino) and amazing architecture. It is a quiet place where one can recharge their batteries and “just be”. The history is incredible. Care to share any local secrets, places to visit ? The salt pans in Xwejni is my favourite location on the island. I am in awe and appreciation of the hard work of Emmanuel Cini

and his family over many years, and make it a first stop to stock up on salt for cooking in my Gozitan kitchen as well as salt to bring home to friends and my own pantry, enough to last until my next visit to Gozo. I love Organika and Prickly Pear in Victoria for unique shopping. Both Charlotte and Rachel are friendly and helpful and have beautiful items in their shops. Bellusa, also in Victoria, has THE BEST hamburgers in the world, and the two brothers who own it are always so friendly and pleasant, which I find amazing, because they work so hard every day! Bravo, guys!!! The fig ice cream and the cinnamon ice cream at Savina (Savina Square, Victoria) is delicious and unique. I also love their small china pots of sea salt flakes. Il-Panzier Restaurant on Charity Street in Victoria has the most beautiful garden and authentic Sicilian food. To dine there, being taken care of by Valentino and Alexandra, is like dining in someone’s private home. I love the watercolors in The Gallery in Xlendi. Phillip also has an amazing collection of used books, all proceeds go to the SPCA. You just place your money in the dog house on the counter of the shop. As a personal chef, what are your thoughts on local Gozitan food, do you have a favourite dish ? The Bread! Everyone loves the bread. And the pasta. The plentiful markets excite me. I love the small, individually owned colourful fruit and veg markets that are everywhere. There is one on St. Francis Square that also has large trays of roasted onions and roasted eggplant. The artisanal items produced on the island: honey, tomato products (LOVE Conserva!); jams and jellies, olive oil, salt, etc. are all outstanding. I believe in eating

local and in season and also supporting farmer’s connection to the land. While living in Xaghra, the daily arrival of Justin, the fruit and veg truck man, was a high point. What a luxury; doorstep delivery! And when marketing, it is refreshing to me to find fresh chicken in the refrigerator case instead of frozen. Gozitan cuisine feels familiar to me, as my Grandmother was Italian. Ftira, pastizzi and pizza are things I do not eat in California but indulge in on Gozo. This year will see your 3rd extended vacation on the Island, what draws you back here ? The people, the life, the sense of community, the peacefulness. Gozo is my Nirvana; it soothes and excites my soul and never disappoints. My first visit to Gozo, was in Xlendi for two months; the second visit, in Xaghra for one month; my upcoming visit will be for 7-8 months, and I know, like previous visits, it will be difficult to leave and I will be very sad. I have made friends on the island and look forward to deepening those friendships. As a keen photographer, what would you say is your favourite picture you have taken on the Island and why ? It is not possible to choose one favourite photograph; I have taken thousands. I love wandering the maze of winding lanes in the ancient heart of Victoria (Rabat) and also at the Citadella. At every twist and turn there is a photograph waiting to be captured. The rubble walls all over the island are beautiful. And, of course, the salt pans and cliffs in Xwenji. Sunrises and sunsets are gorgeous. I love walking through the countryside with my camera at the ready. mygozo magazine Page 68
