Mykonos through the centuries
A
ccording classical mythology, the Giants killed by Hercules in a fierce battle, are buried on the island under imposing blocks of mykonian granite. The name “Mykonos”, somewhat pejoratively, means a mass of stones’ or a rocky place; a later tradition attributes the name of the island to a hero by the name of Mykonos, the son of the king of Delos, Anios, who was the son of Appolon and nymphe Rhoio- a descendent of Dionysus. The Kares and Phoenicians may have been the first inhabitants of Mykonos, but Ionians from Athens were established colonists and in control of the island by around 1000 B.C, having expelled the previous occupants. Historical sources confirm the following: in ancient times there were two towns on the island; in 490B.C, the Persian generals Datis and Artaphernes made a brief stopover in Mykonos; It was a poor island with limited agricultural resources. In ancient, pantheistic times, Dionysos, Demetra, Zeus, Appolon, Poseidon and Heracles were the principle gods worshiped here. Later in history the island belonged to the Romans and subsequently to the Byzantines, who have fortified the island against the Arab raids of the 7th century, kept control of it until the 12th century. After the fall of Constantinople, at the end of the 4th Crusade (1204), the island was occupied, as their seigneur (stronghold) by Andrea and Jeremia Ghisi – relatives of Dandolo, the Doge of Venice. In 1292 it was looted and pillage by the Catalans, and, subsequently, in 1390, given over to the Venetians, in 1390, by the last of the Ghizi overlord. In 1537, while still under Venetian domination, the island suffered a catastrophic attack by Barbarossa, the admiral of Souleiman the Magnificent. Later, under Kapudan Pasha, the head of the Ottoman fleet the island is practically self-governed, according to the system of the period, by a functionary called a “voivode” and a council (body of “syndics”) who always tried to
MYKONOS 1940
maintain an equal distance from both Turks and Venetians (the last of whom withdrew definitively from the region, in 1718, after the fall of the castle of Tinos to the Ottomans). The popular of the Mykonos (which during modern times has fluctuated, generally from 2000 to 5000 people) was increased by colonies of immigrants (from nearby island and as well as from Crete) during time of starvation and epidemics which often followed the periods of conflict, until the late 18th century. The Mykonos, who throughout the same period were known as excellent sailors, were successful in trade and shipping and, also, piracy was not unheard of… Many islanders were active in the “Orlof Insurrection” ( led by the Orloff brothers, 1770-74), which resulted favorably, for them as well as for Catherine the Great in, due to the very profitable treaties concerning trade between the Ottomans and the Russian Empire. Soon after the out break the Greek
Revolution 1821, the Mykonians, roused and led by the lady Mando Mavrogenous (an- aristocrat educated with the most fervent ideas of the Enlightment- who become a popular nation heroine) successfully impeded a landing of a squadron of the Ottoman fleet in 1822. They participated actively in the war , with four armed ships (two of the totally outfitted and supplied at Lady Mando’s expenses ; before the war over she had spend almost all of her , considerable, family fortune). After the establishment of the modern Greek State, the activity of the local upper- and lower- middle class revived the island economy through the consolidate of trade relations with south Russia, Moldavia and Walachia. Mykonian merchants were established in Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria, Syros, Livorno and Marseilles. The predominance of stream technology over the traditional commerce of the sailing ships, at the end of the 19th century, the subsequent opening of the Corinth Canal
(1904) and the upheavals of World War I resulted in a depression of the local economy; many Myconians left to find work abroad (mainly in US) and in the going centers of mainland Greece (Piraeus, Athens). The development of tourism in the following decades has provided a means of the islands’ economy development. The prolonged excavations of the French School of Archeology, begun in Delas in 1873, focused attention on the region- at least that the happy few who, attracted by the charm of classical Greece, had the means and the opportunity to travel. In the early 30s already, many famous artists, politicians and wealthy people, mainly from Europe, began spending vacation on the island, attracted by its unique atmosphere. Mykonos has adapted well to the post-war situation and the gradual growth of the tourism industry in south Europe: the island has turned into a cosmopolitan locale and is one of the most successful growth – models, of its type and scale in Europe.

Armenistis/

A lighthouse with amazing view
The first thing someone encounters in his journey, approaching Mykonos by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina, is the imposing lighthouse on the island. Armenistis as it is named took its name after the homonym cape of Mykonos. Built at an altitude of 184 meters in the northwest end of the island, Armenistis has been declared as a monument since 2012 by the Ministry of Culture and is one of the most important jewels of Mykonos. With a tower height of 19 meters, the lighthouse was built in 1891 after the sinking of the British
ship ÂŤvoltaÂť in 1887 on the north coast of Mykonos, where 11 crew members drowned. The mechanism of the original lamp Armenistis was a SAUTER LEMONIER construction, and was awarded by the International Exhibition of Paris. Since 1983, it is exhibited in the courtyard of the Sea Maritime Museum, housed in a traditional Cycladic building of the 19th century, in the center of Mykonos, in Tria Pigadia. A pole of attraction for locals and tourists, Armenistis has a special place in the heart of Mykonian
citizens. The lighthouse was recently conserved externally and -at times- has hosted exhibitions and concerts on summer nights. Dreamily are the sunsets with view to the deep blue and canvas the panorama to the neighboring islands starting from the right and moving left: Tinos, Gyaros, Kythnos (in depth), Syros, Rinia and Delos. It is an energy spot of serenity and view that calms the soul. Ideal for romantic sunsets, although rare to not meet couples and groups in the courtyard any time you pass by.

Mykonos has only one village in Ano Mera and several seaside settlements. Mykonos also includes the islands of Delos and Rhenia. The rich flora of the complex includes 1,166 plant species. There are more than 30 sandy beaches on the island, several of which are unknown to the world. More or less 800 churches and chapels spread out in the total area of Mykonos, of which more than 60 are located in Chora (downtown). Mykonos belongs to the area of Greece with the smaller seismicity.
The climate of Mykonos
Mykonos is called, and not unjustly whatsoever, “the island of the winds” since it’s rare to find a day when it’s not windy, mainly in the summer. Meltemia, the dry north-westerly wind which blows during the summer (July - August) cool down the island on a daily basis and often do not allow the temperature to skyrocket. The prevailing winds are mostly north and northeast around 6-7 beaufort. During the days of stillness the heat is particularly noticeable. The island has a mild climate even in the winter, since it’s one of the sunniest parts of Greece with sunny days surpassing 300 days a year. Around the island Around Mykonos there are small islands carved in the sea with the most famous island being the one of Baos with the chapel of Aghios Georghios, which one can see northwest upon arrival at the port of the island. Just across from it lies the rocky islet of Cavouras and around Mykonos one can spot the islets of Crommydhi, Marmaronisi, Spontili, and further east, Stapodi and Tragonisi with its famous caves.

Cosmopolitan beaches
P
erhaps the most important of the tourist asset of Mykonos, that distinguish it from other islands are the beaches.
H
ere are without doubt the most - and best - to be found . Particularly in the South, the picturesque coves with sandy beaches follow one another.
T
hose beaches, can be reached by car or motorbike, since the radial roads of the island starting from the Mykonos town stretches nearly to each corner.
P
recisely because of that particular road network in the island, many Southern beaches are linked with each other with a boat operating on a regular service, all day all summer, which offers the visitor a very interesting excursion opportunity.
Psarrou A timeless cosmopolitan beach, Psarrou has been monopolizing the preferences of famous and high-budget holidaymakers in Mykonos since a really long time ago. Its leeward closed bay with its green clear waters is the favorite of the rich & famous of the international jet set of the planet. With fine sand, the organized south beach of Mykonos often hosts events, has a lifeguard, multiple sun lounges, as well as space for your towel in the middle. You will rarely find it empty, without the luxurious yachts anchored in the bay perimeter. The meandering road leading to the beach requires special attention, while the parking area is scarce for those who do not have a restaurant as their destination.
Psarrou
Kalo Livadi It is one of the largest beaches of Mykonos and definitely the one with the finest sand. Kalo Livadi is a southeastern open bay 10 km away from Chora, in the area of Ano Mera. An organized beach with a lifeguard, which grew to be very popular over the years. The beach of Kalo Livadi is calling you to dive into its turquoise waters and experience moments of absolute relaxation. It is known for its good clientele and its family oriented character. Paraga In recent years, Paraga also entered the spotlight. It is the first stop of the boat that starts from Platis Yialos on the way to the famous southern beaches of the island. It is accessible by car or motorbike, however the boat would be the safest choice as to avoid overcrowding and the hassle of parking. Its main characteristic would be the large rock inside, from which you can enjoy diving or sunbathing. It is provided with umbrellas and sun loungers, restaurants and bars by the sea for all tastes and budgets. Panormos A northern bay with wild beauty, Panormos gets unfolded in front of your eyes after the route to Marathi. A few meters away from the biggest dam of the island, the visitors get in touch with the black cave and the wild beauty of Panormos. Up until recently it was a calm beach, but lately there have been various events in a restaurant in the area, something that changed its former physiognomy, resulting into being the main preference of many well-known people and socialites. It is provided with lifeguards and umbrellas, but it also has plenty of space to lay down your towel in case you would prefer a “simpler vacation.

Family oriented beaches Ornos Family oriented, shallow and hospitable, the bustling Ornos, the beach of the homonymous settlement, is one of the beaches preferred by parents and younger people in recent years. A scenic bay with shallow blue waters, leeward to the north, with fine sand. It is easily accessible by bus, car and motorbike. You could possibly encounter a problem concerning the parking, unless you are a regular at one of the many restaurants and taverns in the area. It has a lifeguard and is almost full of umbrellas and sun loungers. The only spot for you to lay down your towel is to the south side of the bay. Aghios Yiannis It’s the beach that has a privileged view over Delos, the cape of Aleomandra and the canal between Mykonos and Delos. Its main characteristic is the chapel of Aghios Yiannis to the west of the bay, to which it owes its name. A sandy beach with good taverns for food, with many beach houses and luxurious villas, as well as large hotel units in the wider region. The beach is recommended for those who want peace and relaxation when swimming. Water sports do not exist, but one can find umbrellas with sun loungers. The beach can be reached by going towards Ornos and taking the road west.
Ornos
Platis Gialos It could claim the title of the blue lake of Mykonos. The picturesque and cosmopolitan Platis Yialos has always been a leeward bay on the southern side of the island. It is also an organized beach with fine sand and unique teal waters. It is full of restaurants and hotels and is one of the most favorite beaches of both younger and older people. This beach is a staple for those who want a scenic ride onboard to the famous beaches of Mykonos, as it is the starting point of all the traditional caiques that take you to them with frequent rides from morning till night. Access by bus would be appropriate. There are only private parkings. It is provided with lifeguards and water sports. Aghios Stephanos Closest to Chora, Aghios Stefanos has always been a safe haven for those who wish to swim in turquoise waters without, however, the abuzz atmosphere of other beaches. It’s a sandy beach with quite shallow water, only... .km away from Chora and is easily accessible by bus but also by car and motorbike. It is an organized beach with umbrellas and sun loungers, but it has also space for you to lay your own towel. It is provided with lifeguards and a beachfront restaurants’ private parking.
Aghios Stephanos
Kalafatis Another long beach with teal deep waters located to the southeast of the island. It’s an organized beach with a lifeguard, water sports and taverns by the sea. It is provided with umbrellas and sun loungers, but also plenty of trees that reduce the wind and invite you to lie underneath their shade. Ideal for those who want to swim quietly, away from prying eyes.

BEACHES / party 18
Time to Party Mykonos is the only place in the world with the two earthly paradises: the simple one and the super one. In fact, we’re talking about the beaches of Kalamopodi and Plintri to the south side of the island that have become known since the 1970s with “code” names.
Paradise
Paradise Paradise is a hallmark of the island, with its homonymous camping known from years ago for its nudists, who, nowadays have been limited quite a lot. It’s a beach with thick sand, which has become famous for its entertainment that begins early in the afternoon and continues until late at night. It is consisted of famous bars, the most famous of which the internationally renowned Cavo Paradiso club to the northern end of the beach. The most famous Djs in the world pass through here in the summer, exciting the crowds and keeping up the fun. People can reach the coast by car, motorbike and bus, since it is the only beach with so many frequent timetables almost 24 hours a day.
Super Paradise The renowned Super Paradise counts already half a century of existence. From the early 1970s to the present day, the beach has created an enviable fun club and has its name endorsed with its daily parties. Millions of tourists pass through here every year, both for its splendid waters and for the entertainment that begins early in the afternoon and continues until late at night. The road network leads you to both sides of the organized beach with the fine golden sand and teal waters. To get to Super Paradise there is also a bus ride from the old harbor, with frequent timetables.
Super Paradise
BEACHES / for relaxation
For relaxation Aghios Sostis Large, sandy beach, one of the most beautiful in Mykonos, to the northern part of the island. On the beach will not be found neither umbrellas and sun loungers, nor beach bars. Long ago it used to be the traditional nudist beach. You will discover it after Panormos and there you can enjoy nature and diving in the sea. Due to the existence of only a small and tavern without electricity, it would be best to have all the necessary items upon arrival.
Aghios Sostis
Kapari It’s a small sandy beach next to Aghios Yiannis. It is the “secret” of the well-informed and the beloved choice of “regulars” and distant socialites. It possesses fine sand and the best view to Delos (wonderful sunset). You can easily reach a certain point by car, after that however it requires walking on a very downhill, rocky, steep path. Myrsini A distant beach, next to Phokos for truly relaxing holidays and an unforgettable swim. The beach is 12 km away from Chora and one can find it by leaving Ano Mera and following the road towards Maou and the dam of Phokos. It is divided into two smaller beaches by a volume of low rocks that reach the sea, which you can easily skip even barefoot. There is also a little surprise further along for those who like to explore... but it requires strong feet and good shoes! There is no restaurant so it would be best that you have the necessary supplies, including an umbrella.
Kapari
Aghia Anna Paragas It’s about a scenic bay next to the bustling Paraga, just opposite Platis Yialos, with which it is joined by a small path. It is a safe haven for those who want to experience a traditional Mykonian way of living. Although lately there is more traffic due to neighboring Paraga as well as shops that have opened in the area, there is a quiet and picturesque corner that will reward your journey. The beach has some umbrellas provided by the traditional tavern of the area.

BEACHES / wild beauty
Wild beauty Fokos Far away from prying eyes, the beach of Phokos offers you an oasis of tranquility and peacefulness, unless of course the beauforts have augmented and the waves strike its granite rocks with fury. Coarse sand and deep blue waters can be found on this wildly beautiful beach. How to get there: On your way to Ano Mera just outside the settlement on the left side you will notice signs that direct you to the area. During the journey from Maou’s meadows, you will move alongside the Phokos dam, and soon through the wildness of the almost unearthly landscape, will be displayed right in front of you a beach, one of the few remaining virgin corners of the island. The beach is not organized, is provided, however, with a restaurant with local specialties. Aghrari Aghrari, with its wild natural beauty, is surrounded by enormous granite rocks. Although there is a road network, the access, for those who are not experienced behind the wheel or have a small motorbike, is advisable to happen by the small boat that starts from Platis Yialos and passes through the area regularly until late in the afternoon. Right next to Elia, crossing could also be done on foot. Aghrari attracts mostly solitary people who seek tranquility in an environment that resembles a lot an era long gone.
Fokos
How to get there: Follow the road to the airport and the route to super paradise, but continue to the Chalara area without turning. From there the signs will guide you in the best possible way. Do not be discouraged by the long downhill you will encounter, because the beach with its strong personality will reward you in the best possible way. Merchia Remote and deserted, Merchia is located to the northern side of Mykonos. Its hallmark is the black pebble and dark waters and it constitutes the best choice for those born to explore. Absolute calmness dominates, but it is also open to the northern winds so when it blows it is suitable for those who love waves. How to get there: After Ano Mera, continue following the signs to Kalafatis and Lia. There, along the way you will find signs that will direct you. The route also includes enough dirt road, which is why the road network requires a lot of attention especially for beginners.

The “EVANGELISTRIA”, a traditional sailing vessel belonging to the museum, will moored this summer in the old harbor where it may be boarded by interested visitors. Open, April to October, daily, 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.. (tel.: +30 22890 22 700)

Nature calling / 26
The natural landscape of Mykonos consists mainly of dry vegetation elements composed mainly by brushwood, scattered elements of maquis vegetation and large uncovered areas with stone bedrock.
The “lunar landscape” of Mykonos hides a lot more life than one may assumed judging from the first sight: the naked hills hold multiple small “treasures” away from the eyes of the average visitor. In scattered, heaven sent rocks and stone walls, a large lizard with thorny appearance is the “trademark” of Mykonos -More than any pelican. It was from this “Mykonian lizard”, widespread in the land of Ionia, that the crocodile of the Nile was named after. When the Ionians arrived in Egypt, they compared the form of true crocodiles (which until then were called “champsai”) to that of the lizards in their homeland and gave them the same name as Herodotus reports.
Volume p.120.). Most observations about the fauna of Mykonos concern both the island itself, as well as the smaller islands of the same cluster. We have a better and more complete picture of the complex Delos, Rinia, Small and Big Rematiaris, while little evidence is known about the other group of islands, Stapodia and Tragonisi. (From older article of Achilles Dimitropoulos, Natural History Museum of Goulandri). In contrast to all above, the remaining fauna of the island is not rich and many of the native species are threatened with extinction. This is due to the arid climate of the island combined with the geological, hydrogeological, soil, hydrological characteristics and the impact of man.
The name “land crocodile” precede the naming “crocodile” in big reptiles of Nile. In Mykonos, even today, the “land crocodile” is called “krokodeilaki” or “korkodeilas” and its presence is obvious in the island, like in the time when Tournefort observed it and presented it in his classic work of Relation d ‘un Voyage (1st
The Mediterranean seal (monachus monachus) which is endangered has its nest on rocky shores. In the sea area of Panormos and in Tragonisi (Gerbian and Anagnostopoulou, 1992), which is located east of Mykonos, Mediterranean seals have occasionally been observed. On phryganic farmland and Cycladic benches you
could meet hedgehogs, black-rats and ferrets. The geographical position of Mykonos favors the concentration of many migratory birds during their movements over the eastern Mediterranean to and from Africa, mainly due to being a focal point of several “migration corridors”. The last two years the two dams of the island in Marathi and Fokos are becoming unique wetlands. In the inland of the island there are traditionally scattered farmsteads, the so-called “villages”, which are grouped into natural basins where underground water and arable land is secured. A great concentration of “villages” in the relatively fertile plateau in the east of the island is the picturesque Ano Mera. The “villages” (farmhouses) of Mykonos, reflect a special aesthetic perception, while being white, they make striking contrast with the gray granite rocks, the endless stone walls, the prickly pears and the reeds.

Paraportiani/ Architectural poem
28
Paraportiani
The picturesque adjective “Paraportiani” indicates the position of the church in the settlement, near the small gate “Paraporti” of the old wall or the medieval fortress, which is no longer preserved. This is a five chapel complex. The idea of the temple complexes and chapels is familiar and intimate in ecclesiastical architecture, both to the Byzantine and the Western medieval one, which were always present in the Aegean, but Panagia Paraportiani complex is in the tradition of Eastern and Western Christian art, something which creates a transcendent synthesis, truly not made by hands. The contribution of human and his art is presented in this church only in one single point. Besides from that, there is only the luck and the predominant imposition of time, treating a complex and bizarre morphology with wear and damage which time leaves in his passing, imposing a stunning aesthetic. Apart from the present architectural merit of the project, this aesthetic of chance and time engages, in suggestive unity, its initials contradictory characteristics such as geometry and plasticity. Paraportiani was a donjon. “In the battle against the Turks all the guards were killed. Then they did the church and buried inside the bones of the dead” sais Catherine Exarchou in her book “Mykonos 1960-2000” noting: “The Paraportiani is the poem of the illiterate Mykonians craftsmen. Ethereal, as if immaterial, between dream and reality, pure as the souls of the old inhabitants of the island, resists during the centuries. “
It is one of the most characteristic Cycladic architectural monuments. It is the most photographed church in Cyclades and is a symbol for the entire Aegean and not only for Mykonos.
The complex includes four churches on the ground floor and one, the most significant one, on the floor, which also was the original one. The current closed narthex of Agios Efstathios on the ground floor was the side door of the castle. Much later, around 1920, local craftsmen formed today’s churches of Ai Stathis pros Anatolas, together with three more small churches arranged in line, the Agioi Anargyroi in the middle, Agios Sozos to the north and Agia Anastasia to the south. The case of the two-storey Paraportiani as it appears today-regardless of whether the two temples were built during the same period -as it is likely-, or at different times-seems to belong to a rare architectural type, where the ground floor chapel and the floor chapel are actual chapels. The current form of the exterior of the complex and precisely the east side, which is the classical view of the monument, is not completely identical to the original. The original full form, before been changed and enriched with that much imagination from time, must have been a completed and closed geometric form, as all Aegean churches. Agia Eleni of the Castle: A large two-aisled vaulted basilica with excellent wooden temple and Byzantine icons of the 17th / 18th century which, until 1878, was the Cathedral of Mykonos. Right next to Agia Eleni, is the church of Agios Dimitrios which for many is the oldest church of the Castle. Agia Sotira is the small chapel next to the sea which has in its floor, the tomb of the last pirate Manolis Mermelechas, who died in 1854. In the same area there is another church by the sea, Agios Giannis tou Vathous. This church has also two beautiful images of 1668 of Michael Rafiou.

Getting to know the city Aerial photo by Andrea Giuriani
Our walk begins from Paraportiani*, the most photographed church of Cyclades, which is located in the area of the ancient Castle. Right across the street, on the northern side of Paraportiani, stands the Folklore Museum. Behind Paraportiani is positioned the chapel of Sotira, in which resides the tomb of Mermeleha*. By crossing the alleys of Aghioi Anarghyroi and Lambrou Katsoni, in actuality what we do is we follow the evolution of the settlement of Chora (downtown). This resulted in the creation of the districts of Barkia and Alefkandra*, in the square of which is built the Church of Zoodohos Pighi, nowadays called Metropolis*. Next to the Orthodox Church is located the only Catholic church of the island, the Virgin of the Rosary, the icon of which dates back to the Venetian era.
Moving southwest to Alefkandra, only a few steps separate us from the stairs leading to the picturesque windmills*. The inside of the windmill is only accessible to the Agricultural Museum that is located in the southeastern side of the country. Southwest we meet one of the most famous neighborhoods of Mykonos, known as Little Venice*. The homes of the captains at the time, literally dipped in the sea with balconies facing the Aegean, constituting nowadays the trademark of Mykonos along with the Windmills. Turning back and continuing our course on Mitropoleos Street and Armed Forces, we find ourselves at the historic Three Pigadia* which were built in 1722 and ensured the water supply of Chora until the mid-1950s.

Aerial photo by Andrea Giuriani Turning left our destination is the building that dominates in the area. It is about the so-called Voinovic* building, which was used as the General Consulate of Russia in the Archipelago that was settled in Mykonos around 1774. Inside it is hidden the administrative history of the island from then until today, since it houses the Town Hall of Mykonos.
Moving away from the Three Pigadia and the myths that follow, we encounter the naval tradition not only of Mykonos but of the whole Aegean. Just a few steps below Aghios Georghios and Aghia Varvara, we see the Aegean Maritime Museum and the House of Lena. These are two necessary stops for any visitor who wants to indulge in the historical depths of the island of winds.
Right behind it, resides the first public school of Mykonos called “the School of Mavros”, which was built at the expense of the Egyptian Marcus Mavros at the times of king Otto in 1859 with the help of the plans of the Bavarian engineer Weiler. During the excavations, important archaeological finds were revealed from prehistoric to later times. Today the building houses the administrative services of the Municipality.
Exiting Lena’s House and continuing in the same direction, at the top of the two-storey building at the corner of the Armed Forces and Tourliani Street, one can see the marble inscription displaying the place of birth of one of the important figures born in Mykonos. This is about Ioannis Svoronos*, offspring of a naval family of Mykonos. Moving on without having realized it we are already passing through the most crowded street of the traditional settlement of M. Andronikos, the famous Matoghianni, while at the beginning, turning our head on the right, it is impossible not to be drawn to the imposing church of Panahra, the second parish church of Chora.
Carrying on, a neoclassical mansion welcomes us to the famous Matoghianni, which, according to the well-known travelers’ descriptions, seems to have been carved at least since the beginning of 1700. At the end of the settlement we encounter the third parish of the settlement (once there were eight), the Holy Church of Aghia Kyriaki, on the left
side of which is located the Municipal library of the island that is housed in the ground floor of the Kabanas Mansion*. The next stop, carrying on downwards, is the beach. Looking at our right, stands out the bust of Mykonian heroine Mantos Mavrogenous.
Leaving the central petal of the traditional settlement area, strolling through the scenic alleys of the Mykonos Labyrinth, you will find yourselves amongst beautiful neighborhoods, picturesque squares and churches of significant historical value, from the 60 and more that actually exist in the traditional settlement.

Top Secrets * Paraportiani: Church dedicated to Mother Mary. It owed its name, however, to the “paraporti”, ie the small gate of the Castle, next to which it was built.
* Marmelechas: The legendary pirate of Mykonos who helped the inhabitants of the island and surrendered himself to the Turks in order for the Mykonian people not to be murdered. The “Robin Hood of the Seas” ended up working as a baker and died poor but glorified in 1854.
* Alefkandra: An area where Mykonian women washed (whitened, since lefkos means white) their clothes in the past.
* It is also called Panaghia (Virgin Mairy) Pighadiotissa because according to tradition her icon was found in a well (pighadi). They also call it Angel-built because another tradition states that the angels helped to rebuild the temple. The exact date that the temple was built is not known, however, the oldest testimony that exists is in a 1616 document. * Little Venice: Characteristic neighborhood of the open sea. It began to be built since the mid 18th century. Wonderful architecture with colorful loggia, windows, doors, stairs, wooden balconies which are literally wetted by the waves and give the district a smell that reminds the famous Italian city.
* Three Pigadia: Tradition says that whoever drinks water from the Three Pigadia will love a Mykonian woman and will marry her, thus staying forever on the island.
* John Svoronos was born in 1863 and has excelled as one of the most renowned numismatist not only in Greece but also globally.
* The first owner of the mansion was Dimitrakis Mavrogenis (grandfather of the Mykonian heroine Mantos
Mavrogenous), the military and political provincial governor of the island in 1753.
* Voinovic Building: The building was named after the Russian count Ioannis Voinovic.

The island’s trademark/ Windmills, Paraportiani church, Town Hall &… Peter
38
“The Windmills” Paraportiani church
“The Windmills” are found south of Chora, in between the picturesque Alefkandra and Neochori. They impress visitors with their all-white overwhelming massive shapes, in a row facing the sea. Today, seven in number have been preserved, out of the ten mills which until beginning of the 20th century, ground the local wheat using the unfailing power
of the wind. The wind windmills of Mykonos, in cooperation with its many bakeries, contributed to the economic travel of the island, as it became a necessary stop, from the provisioning of paximadi (ship’s biscuit), for ships playing the Aegean. The “Bakery of Yiora”, in Neochori, with its wood-burning over, is a working example of the bakeries of past time.
In the Kastro, which is the original nucleus of the present-day town of Mykonos (on its northwestern edge), stands the Paraportiani, a group of building impressive for its shapes plasticity. In this location, during the Middle Ages, there was a tall, fortified tower, side by side
and above one of the entrances to the Kastro. Now there is a complex made up of five churches altogether, four on the ground level and on the floor above, the church of the Virgin, which is the oldest of all. The Paraportiani, and the windmills are the island’s trademark.
The Town Hall Peter the pelican
The Town Hall, built about 1780, is an early neoclassical two-story building with a tile roof, which was constructed after the 1760-1774 conflict between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, in order to house the Russian Consul General of the Archipelago. A few years later it came under the jurisdiction of the “Koinotita” (the local self-governing body of the island of the Greek revolution) and, since then, the office of the Municipality of Mykonos has been located there.
A morning in Chora. Somewhere on the shore or in one of the narrow streets of chora, the bird symbol of Mykonos, Petros the Pelican, moves lazily and smugly toward the stalls of fishermen or the Town Hall to have his breakfast. This is a very popular and photographed theme of Mykonos, which can be met by visitors
at any time of the day, until the lights of the night fall, some times to watch him swim to the waters of the shore and others to stand proud for a quick photo shoot among thousands of tourists . There was a time that up to three pelicans were on the island. Today there is only one.
Delos/ the holy island
39
Delos: The island of Apollo’s light Delos, from antiquity to today, constitutes a special place. Its main characteristic is the fact that all the prosperous civilizations have recognized it as a meeting point for Gods and Men. It is a rocky island, only 3.5 km long and 1.300 m wide, a sacred island that has linked its existence with the birth of Apollo, god of the sun, and Artemis, goddess of the moon, and is full of ancient treasures inextricably linked with the history of the greek race.
E
Delos emerged unscathed from the adventure of the Persian wars, because the Persians as well considered it sacred and did not plunder it like the rest of the Cycladic islands. It is an open-air museum of history and culture. An exhibition of works of art with a history of about three thousand years. When the visitor steps foot on Delos, they can say with certainty that they are wandering through history. Oikos (the house) of the Naxians, Artemisio, the Stoa (a classical portico) of Philip, the Exedra (platform) of Dionysus and a bit further the ancient dwellings of Delians and the temple of Isis. A little further away, lies the Terrace of the the Lions, the marble lions-guards of the island and the sacred Finikia (palm tree) that Leto held on to, as she was giving birth to the god of light, Apollo. Eveything is still here. Among them, a prominent place is held by
the ancient theater, along with the private houses of Cleopatra and Dioskourides. The oldest traces of human presence on the island date back to the 3rd millennium BC. It is said that the first inhabitants of Delos built their ellipsoid huts on the highest part of the island, the peak of mountain Cynthus which is 113 m high, as to be able to supervise and control the small valley and the sea around them. Ascending to the highest point of Delos takes about 20 minutes, but walking will reward you once you see all the Cycladic island forming a circle around it, below your feet. It is estimated, according to archaeologists, that in the beginning of the 1st century B.C. around 30,000 people resided in Delos and that 750,000 tonnes of cargo could be transported every year to its harbors. The wealth gathered in Delos and the friendly relations of its inhabitants with Rome were the main cause of its destruction. The island was plundered and ruined twice: in 88 BC. by the King of Pontus, Mithridates, who was at war with the Romans, and in 69 BC. by the pirates of Athenodoros, ally of Mithridates.
A
Delos, to this day, still carries all the signs of its exceptional importance and since 1990
it constitutes a World Heritage Site. One of the best collections of ancient greek sculptures in the world is here. The archaeological museum of Delos was built in 1904 and is one of the most important in Greece. Its rooms host ancient sculptures, mosaics, vases, inscriptions, jewels, tombstones, columns. You will notice the torso of kouros from the Sanctuary of Apollo, the statue of Dioskourides and Cleopatra and the marble complex of Voreas abducting Oreithia.
The myth
Desperate and persecuted from everywhere, Leto – bearing the child of Zeus - seeks a place to give birth. Zeus pleads with his brother, Poseidon, to help her. He asks him to immobilize the invisible and unnecessarily wandering rock called Adelos (invisible), so that Leto can give birth to Apollo there. Poseidon accepts and anchors the rock into the sea. He binds it with diamond chains on the bottom and calls it Delos (visible). Leto gives birth to the god of light, touching her back in mount Cynthos, holding with her hands the only palm of the island.
F
Nowadays Delos is uninhabited and only a few guards reside on the island. Excursions are daily (morning and afternoon) and it’s a must for every one visiting Mykonos.
Tradition/
40
The famous fairs of Mykonos Fairs are a way of life for Mykonians but also a connection between themselves and tradition.
The innumerable churches of Mykonos and the private chapels dedicated to the Saints of the Christian Church constitute the best meeting point for the locals. The traditional fairs are held during the celebration days that are dedicated to the the Grace of the Saints, where one can be offered traditional bread, pastries, boiled meat and all sorts of dishes offered by the organizers, served with much love and plenty of wine. The tables are filled and the feast begins.
Tradition/
41
The traditional instruments and orchestras accompany the celebration that begins in the afternoon, after Vespers, and ends in the early morning hours. The summer fairs begin on the day of the Holy Trinity, some of them being the one of Aghia Marina on
the 17th of July, Prophet Elijah’s on the 20th of July, Aghia Anna’s on the 25th of July, Aghia Paraskevi’s on the 26th of July, Aghios Panteleimonas’ on the 27th of July etc. The biggest one is the one of Panaghia (Mother
Mary) on the 15th of August at Ano Mera, where the whole island ascends to honor Her Grace, as well as on her Novena (nine days) on the 23rd of August, with a great celebration in the central square.
A big celebration is also the one of the Patron Saint of the island, Aghios Artemios, whose name day is accompanied by a public holiday on the 20th of October and is celebrated, among others, with the presence of official governmental and other authorities. Generally speaking, the religious tradition is held high on the island, which, despite the intense tourist development, honors its traditions and customs that constitute the connecting link of its society.

Ano Mera Ano Mera is the only village of Mykonos with a strong cycladic element and beautiful images for the visitor. Up until 1999 it was a separate community and through it passes everyone who wishes to visit the
northeastern beaches of the island, which have been experiencing a particular growth in recent years. Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Elia, Lia and Aghia Anna are, now, some of the most known. The picturesque square is
the characteristic feature of the village in the center of the settlement, where dominates the Monastery of Panaghia Tourliani and the Monastery of Palaiokastro.
The Monastery of Paleokastro and its Environs Located to the north of Ano Mera, this 18th century nunnery is a typical example of the monastic architecture of the Cyclades. It takes its name from “Paleokastro”, the neighboring hill, crowned with a medieval castle (early Byzantine, occupied until the time of Gizi), which has its foundations on the remains of an ancient fortress. This area is known as one of the two major settlements of the island in ancient time. One can see here, among other things, the old church of Agios Vlassis with its neighboring large dovecote and a prehistoric grave-marker consisting of a single 3-meter-high granite slab.
The Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Tourliani Founded in 1542, this monastery was built in the place where there originally was an old church of The Virgin. From 1757 to 1767, consecrated/ dedicated to the church of The Presentation of the Virgin, it was renovated by the holy monk lgnatio Basoula and achieved its present day from The marvelous, carved- wood “baroque” rood screen in the three-chambered church, the bishops throne and the ambonas…(late 18th century) are said to have been made in Florence; the beautiful icons on the rood screen are attributed to the icon painter Ioannis “of Korfu”. The architecture of the complex, by the simplicity of its grandeur, impresses the visitor who will carefully observe the marble belfry and the water spigot in the courtyard which are elaborately decorated with carvings, typical examples of traditional marble sculpture. The monastery’s collection include many old tools and utensils, important religious relics, priests’ robes furnishings (old carved wood epitaph, analogia/podium etc), post-Byzantine icons, and various other offerings. The main settlement of present day Ano Mera has extended (from its’ center) in the area surrounding this monastery which formerly was vary significant to the island.

“If you take Greece apart it the end you will be left with an olive tree, a vineyard and a boat, which means that with these items you can rebuilt it” said the Nobel Prize winner Greek poet Odysseas Elytis. And he was right since the naval profession is in the dna of Greeks, the olive nourishes them and the vine offers them its valuable wine. In the hinterland of Mykonos, in the lowland of Maou, in the famous vineyards of Mykonos is produced the famous Mykonian wine, named «Paraportiano». It is a biological crop based on the tradition, the wisdom of nature and the good music for healthy grapes. The ecological farm “Vioma of Mykonos “ first started in 1994 inspired by the passion of Nick Assimomitis, that became a reason for the revival of Mykonos’ vineyard. The abandoned vineyard of the monastery of Panagia Tourliani, an area of thirty-six acres was rented, renovated and nowdays 44 acres of vines are cultured in it. Besides the wine, vinegar, grape leaves, molasses and table grapes are produced. On the farm there are 20 beehives and honey is produced. In the traditional wood stove is baked bread with organic flour from oats, rye, corn, barley, carob meal and whole wheat, enriched with a variety of seeds. In the melon field seasonal vegetables are biologically grown.
Engage with a fascinating mixture of experiences while exploring Mykonos island on a bike! Take the time to inhale the freedom offered by a cycling adventure and capture each moment with all your senses sharpened.
Since May 2014, are organized cycling trips/ tours to the unknown, to many people, parts of the island, in the rural settlements of the area of Ano Mera and the surrounding beautiful beaches, starting from the farm. The rides are designed to suit every fitness level, depending on the participants.
What a combination! Sunkissed routes through the rural countryside of the island. A glimpse over Mykonos’ hidden gems and pristine beaches. An insight into Mykonian religious, culinary and rural tradition. The sun’s dazzling light mirrored over the azure waters of the Aegean sea. Stress-free, leisurely and fun family tours as well as awe-inspiring, scenic bike rides on steep inclines at the mountain top. The best solution for cruise passengers with limited time but great desire to explore. And, as a treat in the end, a quaint vineyard following bio-dynamic cultivation methods and offering unparalleled relaxation moments.
Through the tours, the visitor will discover some beautiful sides of Mykonos that are not screen and are no easily accessible by other means. All the equipment needed, first aid, and insurance are provided. The farm is open for guided tours, wine tasting and tasting of Mykonos’ traditional products after contact.

Driving with Safety/
62
What does it mean “driving with safety”? On holidays and generally in any occasion, others relax and others carry the stress of work, be they tourists or people working, trying to serve them. Or on the other hand, those running to catch an unoccupied sun lounger on the beach, or a table at their favorite bar or restaurant. However, we all know that: Good
vacations means safe vacations, without anything unexpected or any accidents occurring. Due to the fact that, usually, when we relax, we do tend to overdo it a bit more while driving to a completely unknown for us environment and road network, here are some small yet useful tips to remind us what it means to drive safely.
Driving with Safety means that: I learn and I apply the Highway Code I do not drive under the influence of alcohol I respect the speed limits I do not illegally overtake the vehicle in front of me
It’s easier to travel with

I stop at the STOP signs and I give priority I give priority to pedestrians and people with disabilities I respect the signs and the instructions of the traffic controllers I always wear a seat belt I place the children in the back seat of the car and I make sure they wear their seat belt In case of me driving or being at the back of a motorcycle, I always wear a helmet

By Sea Bus
In the town of Mykonos there are two starting points for the bus. Depending on the area you wish to go you must choose the respective starting point either in Fabrica (south of the town) or the starting point in the old port (west of the town).
There are three taxi stations on the island and specifically the two of them are in the town and one is in Ano Mera.
The faster and at the same time more picturesque transportation on the island remains the marine transportation. By the time that the sea breeze overwhelms you, in just eight minutes, you find yourself in the center of the town, on the shore and the exploration begins.
From Fabrica leave the buses to the beaches Platy Gialos, Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Paradise, Paranga, to the Airport and the New Port.
The one taxi rank of the town is located behind the archaeological museum in Kamnaki and the other one is in Fabrica next to the bus terminal.
It is difficult to find taxi in the taxi ranks during the summer and even more difficult to stop one on the street.

The SeaBus offers easy access to persons with disabilities. And also the luggage transfer is possible. There are routes every hour starting from 07:30p.m. until 20: 30m.m. If a cruise ship arrives in the New Port, the SeaBus departures are held every 30 ‘.
