Hospital to her Poes Garden house. By Monday afternoon several reports disclosed that Jayalalitha had already died but this refuted mainly for fear of a violent reaction from the grief stricken party cadres. After a day of emotional roller-coaster for her millions of followers, the doctors declared her dead of the cardiac arrest she had suffered late on Sunday evening. Her death was announced prematurely by Jaya TV, her party’s television wing, which spread like wildfire as soon as AIADMK workers lowered the flag at the party headquarters to half-mast. Scuffles broke out on Mondy outside the Apollo hospital where Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa is on life support after suffering a cardiac arrest. of the chief minister when they tried to break through the barricades outside the hospital after media reports — later denied — that she had died. Doctors treating the 68-yearold former film star, who enjoys an almost god-like status in Tamil Nadu, say she is in critical condition and on life support. Hundreds of devotees had kept a round-the-clock vigil outside the private Apollo hospital in Chennai since she was first admitted in September suffering from a fever. Their numbers swelled since her condition worsened on Sunday. Police across the state had been put on high alert to maintain law and order, with 1,000 officers stationed at the hospital alone. A near total shutdown like situation
Following the death of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa at Apollo hospitals in Chennai after suffering a cardiac arrest, the AIADMK party leaders have decided that O Panneerselvam will succeed Jayalalithaa as the next CM. According to sources, Panneerselvam will be sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM. He has been the acting chief minister of the state since Jayalalithaa was hospitalised at Apollo on September 22. Panneerselvam is one of the most reliable men of Jayalalithaa and has served as the CM before also when she was not able to hold her position due to various legal issues. Sources say senior leader Edappadi Ramamoorthy and Lok Sabha deputy speaker Thambi Durai are also in the running but the trump card could be with Sasikala, Jayalalathia’s close aide and a power centre on her own right.
3 BJP unit leaders Centre tells BSNL to boost relieved from posts telephony coverage in NE
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, DEC 5 (NPN): In an unprecedented move, the state BJP unit has relieved three party functionaries from their respective posts/assignments in the party setup with immediate effect. The “office order”, signed by BJP unit general secretary (adm) Eduzu Theluo, which was made available to the media, stated that the State unit “as directed by the central leaders” has relieved BJP unit vice president K. James Vizo, v/p Mghato Achumi and spokesman Yanghose Sangtam. Though no BJP party functionary wished to comment on the issue, the sacking of three senior leaders have been seen as a clear indication that all was not well within the state BJP unit. There has been growing differences within the party whether to stay or not in the present NPFled DAN alliance government. The issue started off after Mmhonlumo Kikon was unceremoniously sacked as parliamentary secretary, followed by state BJP’s memorandum to Governor, attacking its long time ally on charges of rampant corruption. The step taken by BJP to attack its ally, wherein BJP also has three of its MLAs in the council of ministers, has not been taken too well by the NPF leadership. Of late, few senior NPF ministers had openly come out against the BJP on various issues.
NEW DELHI, DEC 5 (PTI): To ensure better telephony coverage in northeastern states, the Centre has asked Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to create communication infrastructure in these areas. In an inter-departmental communiqué, the Home Ministry cited usage of signals from neighbouring Myanmar by people living in certain areas of the north-east and has agreed to provide all necessary help in terms of coordination with state governments to facilitate creation of infrastructure. “Lack of adequate cellular coverage in the region has brought a sense of discontentment amongst the youth and general public who despite having means are deprived of benefits of modern means of communication. “It has also been observed that certain sections of society utilise the spillover signals from Myanmar Telephone Service Providers in the border areas. As reach of these signals is limited, the communication in the region remains inadequate,” it said.
Mobile tele phony coverage in the north eastern region of the country has been deficient due to limited presence of Indian telephone service providers. An analysis of region reveals that there are communication voids in the areas along Indo-Myanmar international border, especially in the southern Arunachal Pradesh, southeastern Nagaland, west and southern Manipur and southern Mizoram. “It is suggested that BSNL may be asked to create communication infrastructure in the form of towers in the border areas and the funds available under Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) can be utilised for creation of infrastructure in this region,” the communiqué said. There are eight north easter n states--Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Sikkim. The MHA said similar communication network was initiated by Ministry of Communication in the areas affected by Left wing extremism.

NEW DELHI, DEC 5 (NPN): Joint Naga Civil Societies Delhi (JNCSD) under the aegis of Naga Students Union Delhi (NSUD) took to the streets Monday in protest against Manipur chief minister, Ibobi Singh’s government “to criminalize the Naga political issue”, informed JNCSD Lakpachui Siro. Hundreds of Nagas living in Delhi marched through the streets of Jantar Mantar, chanting in unison, “Release UNC Leaders Without Any Condition”, “Communal Manipur, Down Down Down”, “Ibobi, Stop Persecuting Naga Leaders”, “Stop Criminalising Naga Political Issue” and “Long Live, Naga Territorial Integrity”. Following the arrest of United Naga Council (UNC) presi-
dent, Gaidon Kamai and information secretary, S.K. Stephen by Manipur police, the civil societies had been observing indefinite sit-in protest in Delhi. JNCSD said that the UNC leaders were arrested on the false charges of causing disturbances and damaging public properties following the peaceful total shut down called by UNC along the National Highway in protest against the creation of Sadar Hills District. JNCSD also slammed Government of India for the “political insincerity in allowing a free hand to the Manipur government to intermeddle into the ongoing Indo-Naga political dialogue”. JNCSD condemned the “political persecution” of Naga leaders and warned against unleashing of avoid-
able ethnic violence, which it said may take place in case the UNC leaders are not released immediately. NSUD general secretary Chawangbo Chalunmai said: “The issue of Naga ancestral land and territory is always political in nature and no attempt of the State Government can reduce the issue to a legal nature. The imposition of Section 144 CrPC along the national highway instead of initiating genuine political dialogue in order to resolve the issue is absolutely uncalled for”. On the other hand, Lakpachui Siro said: “The aggressive anti-Naga identity politics being pursued by Ibobi government is nothing but an invasion upon Naga nationhood, culture and identity.
