G7 leaders amps up pressure on China, Russia

HIROSHIMA, MAY 20 (AGENCIES): Group of Seven leaders on Saturday warned China over its “militarization activities,” but also sought to win Beijing’s support for pressing Russia to halt its invasion of Ukraine, as the war-torn country’s leader arrived in Hiroshima for the G7 summit.

A joint communique by G7 leaders a day ahead of the summit’s conclusion called on Beijing to adhere to international norms, including addressing “nonmarket policies and practices,” refraining from “unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion” and respecting human rights, including in Tibet and Xinjiang.

Power outage in parts of Dimapur

DIMAPUR, MAY 20

(NPN): In view of the construction of 11kV Trunk line to strengthen the 11kV feeders along main roads in Dimapur Town, power department has informed that there would be scheduled shutdown of power supply for 11kV airport, Purana Bazaar and veterinary feeders on May 22, 23, 25, 26 and 27 from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Informing this in a press note, SDO (Elec No. II) Er. Chubatemsu Ao said that the affected areas include-- Burma Camp, Purana Bazaar, parts of Walford, Naharbari, Darogajan, Padumpukhuri, Darogapathar and its adjoining areas. Therefore, consumers of the affected areas have been requested to extend cooperation and bear with the inconvenience during the shutdown period.

India logs 782 Covid

cases NEW DELHI, MAY

20 (PTI): India on Saturday recorded a single-day rise of 782 COVID-19 infections, while the number of active cases came down to 8,675, according to Union health ministry data.

With the fresh cases, the country’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 4.49 crore (4,49,85,705). The death toll increased to 5,31,824 with six deaths, including three reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The active cases now comprise 0.02 per cent of the total infections, while the national recovery rate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted the importance of Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, a group of four countries – US, Australia, India, and Japan) while addressing concerns over Chinese assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.

Addressing Quad leaders US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, Modi said, “There is no doubt at all about the fact that the IndoPacific region is the engine for global trade, innovation and development. We agree that the security and success of the Indo-Pacific is important, not just for this region, but, for the entire world.”

“With united efforts, we are giving practical dimension to our vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific,” he said.

Will do ‘whatever we can’ on Ukraine crisis: Modi to Zelensky

India will do “whatever we can” to resolve the Ukraine crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged Saturday as he met President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time since Russia’s invasion.

“I understand your pain and the pain of Ukrainian citizens very well,” Modi said, as the pair met on the sidelines of the Group of 7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

“I can assure you that to resolve this India and, me

personally, will do whatever we can do,” Modi said. It was the pair’s first in-person meeting since Russia’s invasion began 15 months ago, which New Delhi has pointedly resisted criticizing. India to host Quad summit next year: India will host the United States, Australia and Japan next year for a summit of the group of regional powers known as the Quad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday.

JPMT calls for peace in Manipur NCD appeals to Kuki and Meitei communities

DIMAPUR, MAY 20

(NPN): The Joint Peace Mission Team (JPMT)

North East India, Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) and Concerned Citizens for Peace in the region have expressed deep anguish and pain over the over the recent incidents of violence in Manipur.

In a joint statement, Archbishop Emeritus of Guwahati and Chairman JPMT Thomas Menamparampil and JPMT spokesperson Allen Brooks appealed all for peace and to stop the violence against people and places of worship.

“In solidarity we grieve

with our brothers and sisters who have fallen victims to violence and have immensely suffered in consequence,”

JPMT said while conveyed deepest condolences to all those who have lost their near and dear ones to this human carnage.

JPMT said that the situation in Manipur was greatly frightening and escalating to proportions of a huge humanitarian crisis.

Recognising the difficulties in the prevalent situations, JPMT called upon members of the different communities in tensions to explore constructive ways of easing the circumstances and moving forward.

WSKH resolution on ILP

DIMAPUR, MAY 20

(NPN): Western SümiKükamiHoho (WSKH) has resolved to support the government on ILP in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts.

This was resolved at a joint executive meeting of area chaimen and WSKH advisers on May 19 at Western Sumi Hoho office, Chekiye.

WSKH president PhushitoAyemiand general secretary KughatoAwomi said that the house after deliberation, resolved to support the state government’s order to implement ILP in Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima districts.

With regard to Niuland

district, WSKH reminded the concerned authority that there were still many issues regarding implementation of ILP in the bordering district as there are villages under the district that needed proper boundary demarcation with Assam.

Therefore, WSKH has appealed to the administration to consult the leaders and people of the region and look into the matter properly and study the facts.

In this regard, WSKH has requested the concern authority for relaxation of ILP rules or extend some period for implementation of ILP in the region in order let people get enrolled for ILP.

“We hope that they would be able to find ways of settling the differences and hold on to the values of the distant past where models of collaborative conduct and inter-community engagement prevailed with the knowledge that the destinies of all our human communities are intertwined with each other,” JPMT stated. The mission also hoped that the people would be able to find wisdom, courage and sacrifice so that the future generations would be thankful for the sobriety and balanced intervention manifested now even in the midst of distress and grief.

Centre moves SC for review

DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (NPN): Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has appealed to Kuki and Meitei communities of Dimapur to uphold the “familial bond of mutual co-living in Dimapur as before”.

NCD president Etsungmomo Kikon and general secretary LK. Peter Anal said “no inimical or avenging feelings” should be given a chance between the two communities following the clash between the two communities in Manipur state. NCD reminded that Dimapur is a metropolitan city where different communities

live in harmony and peace. NCD cautioned that “no external hate influence/ force should be allowed to create unwanted situation” in Dimapur.”

NCD further appealed Manipur government and the Meitei and Kuki communities to restore normalcy in the state at the earliest. It also called for resuming all learning activities, so that the displaced students from other states, particularly Nagaland, return to their respective institutions in Manipur to complete their studies and save their future careers peacefully.

Siddaramaiah sworn in 24th CM of Karnataka

BENGALURU, MAY 20

(PTI): Siddaramaiah was sworn in as chief minister (24th CM) for the second term, along with state Congress president D K Shivakumar as deputy chief minister, and eight legislators as ministers on Saturday, exactly a week after the party swept the Assembly polls in Karnataka.

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to the chief minister and his cabinet at Sree Kanteerava Stadium here, where Siddaramaiah had taken oath in 2013, when he became chief minister for the first time.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attended the swearing in ceremony, while former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was absent.

party leaders were also in attendance. The event seemed to be a show of strength for opposition parties amid unity efforts to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Supongmeren,who attended the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Karnataka government, said that the thunderous applause and the slogans of victory engulfing the streets of Karnataka was the deserving result of the blood, sweat and tears of the supporters, the party workers and its leadership on all levels.

“The people of Karnataka have shown that they will no longer accept gover-

nance on the narratives of divisional politics and corruption. When every strata of society comes together there is nothing that cannot be achieved,” he stated. Supongmeren asked “if we Nagas could take a page of learning from the Karnataka chapter?”, adding that the people have witnessed a positive change which would kick off a chain reaction to work towards the change that was needed.

Meanwhile, NPCC congratulated the central leadership, chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy CM DK Shivkumar whose actions have inspired all to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.

NSCN/GPRN (Niki) warns antisocial elements

DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN (Niki) has expressed serious concerned over rampant rise of illegal activities including drug trafficking and scams of various forms, duping innocent Naga public, destroying the Naga society.

In a press note issued by the MIP, the group observed that all such antisocial elements, taking toll in Nagaland are being boldly practiced allegedly “under the nose of occupational state police force and are also harbored by its personnel and organized groups.”

MIP said that the

NSCN/GPRN authority was “committed and hard bent to curb all such activities and shall initiate stern action against anyone found involved in antisocial activities.”

MIP, therefore, warned that the NSCN/ GPRN “shall not be responsible or answerable for occurrences of any unfavorable consequences due to hindrance caused by any individual, group or occupational state police in the efforts of the NSCN/ GPRN to contain antisocial elements.”

Climate change is increasing risk of fungal infections: Study

NEW DELHI, MAY 20(AGENCIES): Global rise in temperatures is increasing the threat of fungal infections, which can be fatal to human lives, according to US health officials. Climate predictions show that temperatures will likely rise by more than 1.5 Celsius above the UN-mandated pre-industrial levels at some point before 2027. The health officials state that climate change is “pushing the organisms to adapt to better infect and invade people”, the Telegraph reported.

“Since many of these fungal pathogens typically exist in nature, they`re not as well adapted to hu-

man or mammalian body temperatures at 37 degrees centigrade,” Dr Michael Kurilla, a director of the US National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, a department within the National Institutes of Health was quoted as saying. “But with global warm-

ing, they are actually adapting... (it is) becoming much easier for fungi to colonise and infect and invade citizens, as well as other mammalian species,” he added.

Of particular concern is Candida auris, which has a fatality rate between 30 and 72 percent, the report

said. First identified in Japan in 2009, the pathogen is rapidly spreading around the world, with about 30 countries reporting on it. It is also difficult to detect and even harder to treat.

Candida auris exploits weakened immune systems and has emerged globally as a multidrug-resistant healthcare-associated fungal pathogen, which has led to outbreaks in hospitals across the world.

In March, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in a study published in the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine, reported that clinical cases of Candida auris increased

steadily between 2019 and 2021. Experts saw an especially dramatic increase during that time period: From 2019 to 2021, cases increased from 476 to 1,471. “It’s coming to be a perfect storm,” Dr Prabhavathi Fernandes, a World Health Organization advisor was quoted as saying.

“You’re having increasing resistance rates, increasing immunosuppressed patients worldwide, and you have this bug which is now adapting to higher temperatures.” According to experts a surge in conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and even long Covid will also suit the fungi, the report said.

MIP asserted that it shall not allow anti-social and illegal activities which are rapidly destroying the society.

Greeting the people of Khonoma, minister, of Horticulture & Women Resources and host of the festival, Salhoutuonuo Kruse highlighted the significance of the festival and said that Thekranyi is a festival

of the youth, where the young and the age group enjoy and feast, using their earnings from agricultural labor.

She also said that the festival marks the beginning for the farmers to start their agriculture and farming.

In his short speech, advisor, Youth Resources and Sports, Keoshu Yimchunger acknowledged and shared his experience visiting the green village and described Khonoma as not only a clean village but

a highly potential village.

Advisor to chief minister and chairman IDAN and special guest, Abu Metha speaking on the occasion acknowledged God’s blessings for the auspicious day in celebrating Thekranyi.

He also acknowledged the people of Khonoma for their contribution to the journey of making ‘Nagaland’.

NCD health screening camp was also held after the programme, where 54 people were screened for blood pressure, blood sugar test, weight check and general check-up. The programme was chaired by MO Kilomi PHC Dr.Gihuka Chishi.

At the meeting, Moatoshi reviewed the activities and achievements of the department and emphasized the need for innovation in reducing the unemployment rates in the State.

Municipal/town councils initiate RRR for sustainable living

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, MAY 20(NPN): In an effort to encourage citizens to donate unused items such which can be refurbished, reused, or recycled to create new ones, the municipal and town councils in the state launched the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) centres in their respective councils on May 20.

It may be noted that RRR centers were part of the “Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar” project launched under the Swachh Bharat MissionUrban 2.0 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

In Dimapur, the temporary RRR office initiated by Dimpaur Municipal Council was inaugurated at Dimapur District Sports Council by Naga Women Hoho Dimapur president, Neinuo Kire.

Addressing the gathering, Kire said Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were the three essential practices that would help promote

environmental sustainability if it was properly adopted by the community.

She also called for collective efforts from individuals, businesses and colony councils and residents for the campaign to be successful.

“Under such initiatives, together as responsible citizens, we can create a greener and more sustainable city for present and also future generations”, she said and encouraged everyone to get involved by participating in the donation drive to make the campaign a success.

Delivering the keynote address, administrator, DMC, W Manpai Phom, said RRR campaign was launched under the initiative of Swachh Bharat 2.0 mission, and the drive would culminate on World Environment Day, June 5.

He urged all colony and ward councils to take active part in this campaign, as the three best performing colonies will be awarded Rs. 70,000, Rs. 60,000, and Rs. 50,000.

He informed that first phase collection would be conducted on May 27 and second phase on June 3, and for which colony councils have been asked to identify their RRR centre.

Meanwhile, delivering short speeches, vice president, Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation, Vikheho Chisho, assured full cooperation to DMC and urged the chairman federation and GB Union to carry out work as husband and wife.

General secretary, Dimapur GB Union, T Onen Jamir, also in his short speech assured to cooperate with DMC for the success of the campaign.

Shanavas spoke on the need to limit the use of paper and the absence of proper functioning recycling plant in the state. He appealed to the people to properly dispose the waste by segregating biodegradable and recyclable wastes.

Administrator, KMC, T. Lanusenla Longkumer informed that the RRR campaign would culminate on June 5 and the best three centres would be awarded and massive cleanliness drive will be concluded.

Longkumer also appealed to the people to contribute their surplus old unused items like used clothes, old books and stationery, toys, furniture, shoes, bags and electronic items etc. to the RRR centres.

Hekani meets union ministers with proposals

DIMAPUR: Advisor of Industries and Commerce Department, Hekani Jakhalu called on Union Minister of MSME Narayan Tatu Rane and Union Minister of State MSME, Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma in New Delhi on May 17.

According to DIPR report, at the meeting, various issues of MSME sector and growth potentials in the State were deliberated. Hekani also submitted a number of proposals that would help to promote and improve the MSME landscape in the State.

She also called on the Development Commissioner (Handloom & Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, and solicited support for the promotion of

the sector in the State. At a meeting with the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Pashupati Kumar Paras, Hekani said that food processing was one of the potential and thrust areas in the state where development can be brought about.

Therefore, she urged the Union Minister to consider and support the various upcoming project proposals of the State which will be placed before the Ministry. The Union Minister also in confirmation encouraged the State to submit proposals on projects available under the Ministry and assured approvals.

IMPHAL, MAY 20: Normalcy fast returning in violence-hit Manipur with the situation improving slowly, said security advisor to the Manipur chief minister Kuldiep Singh on Saturday.

Briefing the media on the latest law and order situation at the chief minister’s secretariat in Imphal today, the security advisor said that there have been certain small incidents at different places and nothing major.

However, rumours were still doing the rounds, he said, while reiterating the government’s appeal not to believe in the unverified and unconfirmed news.

Singh claimed that with the situation improving, people of the two conflicting communities have started showing solidarity to each other while relaying some rescue stories.

He informed that in Churachandpur district, four persons abducted by miscreants were rescued and handed over to the Army and security forces for safe passage.

Two of the four persons were rescued by members of Young Paite Association while the other two by the members of the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), he said.

The rescued persons were handed over to the police and security forces for their safe passage to their respective families, he said.

On May 19 also, in Imphal, locals with the assistance of the police rescued a person from the miscreants who tried to whisk away him and handed over to the Army for safe passage to his home.

“These are the good signs,” the security advisor said, adding that earlier people of each community used to chase after or take away people or persons of other communities. Those who were abducted by miscreants were still missing, he said.

It may be mentioned that as many as seven persons were missing after they were allegedly abducted by armed miscreants suspected to be Kuki militants.

The security adviser

said that incidents of rescue and handing over of those abducted to the Army and Central security forces showed that people have confidence on each other as well as in the state security agencies.

“There are the good things that better sense is prevailing and people are having more faith in the Army, Central security forces and local police as well as in the system,” the security advisor said. He said that with the situation improving further, the curfew relaxation hours has also increased.

The curfew was relaxed for 11 hours, from 5 am to 4pm, in seven districts –Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal and

Pherzawl – and 10 hours in two districts –Churachandpur and Chandel.

The same was relaxed for five hours in Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal while there was no curfew in other districts –Tamenglong, Noney, Senapati, Ukhrul and Kamjong. The Assam Rifles and CAPF shifted 11,373 persons stranded at Kangpokpi to Churachandpur on May 18 and another 454 persons from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi on the same day.

Another 54 stranded persons from Keithelmanbi were also shifted to Kangpokpi district, he said.

The Army along with the local police continued to conduct surprise checks at designated camps of the Kuki militants under tripartite suspension of operation (SoO).

The presence of cadres in the camps was increasing day by day. Arms and ammunition in the armouries of the designated camps were also counted by breaking the locks, Kuldiep informed. The Assam Rifles have done a good work, he said while informing

that they collected 10 kg of explosives and 2000 detonators of Bharatiya Infra Projects Limited (BIPL) implementing railway line construction in Manipur took its custody before it went into the hands of miscreants.

The police have also recovered more arms and ammunition snatched by unruly mobs after the May 3 mayhem.

So far, 480 arms and over 6800 ammunition were recovered till date, he said. There has been certain small incidents at different places and nothing major, he said, reiterating the government’s appeal not to believe in the rumours.

He further appealed to everyone and organizations like Young Paite Association, KSO and some other villages that showed a kind of solidarity towards each other to enhance the gesture. “We should have faith in the system and have faith in humanity and should not create unnecessary issues in which peace will be disturbed,” the security advisor said.

GUWAHATI, MAY 20 (PTI): The Assam Police has recommended a CBI enquiry into the death of woman police sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha, who had become popular as the ‘Dabang cop’ in a purported road accident, a top official said on Saturday.

All police officers of Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts, where she worked and cases connected to her were lodged, including those related to her death, are being transferred, Assam Director General of Police G P Singh said.

The criminal investigation department of the police was initially entrusted with the inquiry.

“After reviewing the entire case with the CID team and senior officials at police headquarters, I have recommended to the government to transfer four cases related to Rabha to the CBI,” he said at a press conference here.

Rabha, 30, who was also called ‘Lady Singham’ after Bollywood police movies for her strict

dealings with those who broke the law, was killed early on Tuesday when her car collided head-on with a container truck at Sarubhugia village in Kaliabor subdivision of Nagaon district.

Singh said the decision to recommend the case to the central investigative agency was taken after considering the public sentiment for it.

It was also deemed proper to ask a neutral agency to investigate the matter as it involves the death of an officer of the Assam Police, the DGP added.

Of the four cases, three are lodged in Nagaon district, where she was posted. In one of them, which was

lodged on May 5, she was the investigating officer, while two cases are related to her death. The fourth case was lodged in Lakhimpur against Rabha for alleged criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery, attempt to cause death, wrongful confinement and extortion. It was registered on MaY 15, a day before her death.

Singh said the decision to transfer all police officers of Nagaon and Lakhimpur, including their SPs, was taken after discussing with the chief minister, it has been decided to transfer all police officials of Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts, including the superintendents of police.

Rabha, who was incharge of Morikolong police outpost in Nagaon, was known for her strict dealings but was in the news for her alleged involvement in financial irregularities. After her death in the accident, Rabha’s family and friends alleged foul play and demanded an impartial probe to find the truth behind it.

(PTI): Over 3,000 saplings were planted as part of Mission Green Miao in a sub-division of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, an official said.

The initiative aims to mitigate the effects of climate change, Miao additional deputy commissioner Ibom Tao said.

The saplings were planted on a 26-km stretch of road between Namchik and Miao.

The plantation programme in Miao, a subdivision under Changlang district, is under the ‘Mission Arunachal LiFE Campaign’, a part of the Pakke Declaration.

on November 13, 2021, adopted the ‘Pakke Declaration 2047’, aimed at “climate-resilient development” in the state.

The declaration envisages a multi-sectoral approach towards low emission and climate-resilient development through five broad themes -- forest and climate change, health and well-being of all, sustainable and adaptive living, livelihoods and opportunities and evidence generation and collaborative action.

“The sub-division is witnessing rapid climate changes in the recent past due to an increase in human activities, including deforestation, agriculture and horticulture activities

besides rapid industrialisation. We decided to initiate a rejuvenation plan to mitigate the climate change effect with the hope that human intervention will surely reduce environmental impacts,” Tao said.

Under the new mission, over 5,000 ornamental trees and fruit-bearing trees would be planted along the roads and in vulnerable villages respectively, he said.

“Our plantation drive will continue till World Environment Day on June 5 this year,” Tao said. State Civil Supplies Minister Kamlung Mossang, who launched the plantation programme, urged people to take care of plants.

(PTI): The Assam government issued a dress code for school teachers, stating that some of them were in the “habit” of wearing clothes that sometimes do not appear to be acceptable by the public at large. Teachers would have to attend classes in formal clothes in sober colours, with party and casual apparel to be strictly avoided, the notification issued on Friday said. Sharing the order on Twitter on Saturday, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu wrote: “There are some misgivings regarding dress code prescribed for school teachers. I am sharing the notification for clarity.”

Army rescues 500 tourists from landslide-hit Sikkim

(PTI): The Indian Army rescued 500 stranded tourists, including 54 children, from north Sikkim as torrential rain in parts of the Himalayan state caused landslides and roadblocks,

a defence official said on Saturday.

Heavy rain was witnessed in Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang on Friday.

As a result of the downpour, approximately 500 tourists, who were travelling

to Lachung and Lachen valley, were stranded at Chungthang due to landslides and roadblocks en route, he said.

“On request from SDM Chungthang, troops of Trishakti Corps, Indian Army swung into action and

North Sikkim district collector Hem Chettri said all the tourists, mostly from West Bengal, were stuck following landslides in Martin area of Chungthang on Friday and they were stranded on the road for several hours before the rescue teams arrived on the spot.

The notification said that it has been noticed that some teachers were “found in the habit of wearing the dress of their choice which sometimes do not appear to be acceptable by public at large”.

“Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the work place,” it said.

As per the prescribed dress code, male teachers should wear formal attire only, with formal shirt-pant being the approved apparel.

Due to an “abnormal” hike in the gas price, the production cost in its Rukhia power generation plant has gone up to Rs 7 per unit, which was merely at 2.50 per unit, he said. In the northeastern state, almost all the power plants are fuelled by natural gas.

“We have explained our position before the Tripura State Regulatory Commission through representation as to why a tariff hike is inevitable. Now, it will be the regulatory body to determine the percentage of power tariff hike to make it a win-win situation for all stakeholders”, he said.

It took the number of persons arrested in connection with the incidents of May 13 to 148. Of the two men held on Saturday morning, a 23-year-old man was the one who had lodged a complaint about an objectionable Instagram post, claiming that it hurt religious sentiments. G7 summit: PM proposes 10-pt action plan

HIROSHIMA, MAY 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for building an inclusive food system to provide relief to the world’s most vulnerable people as part of his 10-point action plan to address challenges in the area of food, fertilisers and healthcare.

In an address at a session of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Modi also pitched for checking the “expansionist mentality” occupying the fertiliser resources and strongly batted for the democratisation of technology.

The prime minister’s 10-point action plan included curbing wastage of food, depoliticisation of global fertilizer supply chains, promoting millets, encouraging holistic healthcare, strengthening digital health care and building development models inspired by the needs of developing countries. There is a need to focus on the holistic use of natural resources and the development model inspired by consumerism has to be changed,

Modi said.

The prime minister said efforts should be put to build an inclusive food system that focuses on the world’s most vulnerable people, especially “marginal farmers should be our priority”.

“The global fertiliser supply chains have to be strengthened. Political obstacles in this have to be removed. And the expansionist mentality that is occupying the fertilizer resources has to be stopped. This should be the purpose of our cooperation,” he said.

The prime minister, however, did not name any country.

Modi also emphasised preventing the wastage of food saying it should be “our collective responsibility”.

“It is essential for sustainable global food security,” he said.

The group of seven (G7), comprising the US, France, the UK, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan, represent the world’s richest democracies. Under its G7 presidency, Japan invited India and seven other countries to the summit.

ED files case against alleged Gujarat conman Kiran Patel; conducts searches

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday said it has conducted searches at a dozen locations in Gujarat against alleged conman Kiran Patel who is accused of cheating people by impersonating as a PMO official while taking the Jammu and Kashmir administration on a ride.

The searches, carried out on May 19, resulted in seizure of documents related to immovable properties apart from recovery of “highly incriminating” material, the agency said in a statement.

“Further investigation in respect of his activities in J-K and other places is in progress,” it said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 20 (PTI): Opposition leaders on Saturday attacked the government over the withdrawal of Rs 2000 currency notes from circulation with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee describing it as “Tughlaqi demonetisation drama” and Congress wondering if this was the second “notebandi” exercise.

The BJP rejected this was any sort of demonetisation and instead reminded the Congress that even during the rule of Manmohan Singh, old currency notes were taken off circulation.

RBI on Friday made the surprise announcement but gave the public time till September 30 to either deposit Rs 2000 notes in accounts or exchange them at banks. It said it had asked banks to stop issuing Rs 2000 notes with immediate effect. Banerjee said this move would “hit common people hard once again”.

In a tweet, she said, “Another whimsical and Tughlaqi demonetisation drama of Rs 2,000 notes

will hit the common people hard once again by subjecting them to massive harassment…Such misadventure by an oligarchic & authoritarian government will not be forgotten by the people at large at the time of reckoning.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called for an impartial probe into the entire episode.

In a tweet in Hindi, he said, “You inflicted a deep wound on the economy with the first demonetisation. Due to this, the entire unorganised sector was destroyed, MSMEs were closed down and crores of jobs were lost…”

At a press conference in Patna, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad when asked about the move said, “The RBI has put out a detailed communication clearly explaining how the use of these high denomination notes was dwindling. We would like to remind our Congress friends that even during the rule of Manmohan Singh, old currency notes used to

be taken off circulation. Hence they (Congress) must not call it notebandi.” He added, “If these notes were in use for laundering money, scrapping these will hit such networks.”

Independent Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal also attacked the government over the decision and recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks at the time of the 2016 demonetisation that the magnitude of cash in circulation is directly linked to the level of corruption.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra said “No civilised nation puts its people under constant fear of cash turning to toilet paper. Why should we stress about our wallets vaporising every few years?” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin claimed the move is a ploy to hide the BJP’s electoral debacle. Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Sanjay Raut and Aaditya Thackeray, Bharat Rashtra Samithi spokesperson Sravan Dasoju also questioned the move.

Drugs seized from Indian waters: NCB seeks custody of accused

MAY 20 (PTI):

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), which is probing the recent seizure of over 2,500 kilograms of methamphetamine from a vessel in Indian waters in a joint operation with the Navy, on Saturday moved the court seeking custody of the accused.

The agency sought the custody of Pakistan national accused, Zubair Derakshshandeh for five days from May 22. The accused is currently under judicial custody.

“...the court may be pleased to order production of the accused person... before this court on

22-05-2023 and grant the custody to the petitioner for custodial interrogation in the case for 5 days w.e.f 22-05-2023 to 26.05.2023,” the application filed by the agency said.

In the remand report filed by the agency on May 16, it had said that a drug trafficker from Pakistan had offered the accused, “good money” after the work was completed.

The agency had on May 15 said that the actual commercial value of the contraband after its latest evaluation was close to Rs 25,000 crore, because of the high purity of the seized methamphetamine.

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was given a lunch break for around 30 minutes at around 2 pm. He returned to the CBI office and joined the investigation. He left for the day at around 4:30 pm, the official said.

It was his first appearance before the agency after the case was registered against him, the official said.

The CBI had summoned the former Mumbai Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director for questioning on Thursday

in connection with the case, but he did not appear that day.

The central agency booked Wankhede and four others on May 11 for alleged criminal conspiracy and threat of extortion, besides under provisions pertaining to bribery under the Prevention of Corruption Act on a complaint by the NCB.

On Friday, Wankhede got a relief from the Bombay High Court which directed the CBI not to take any “coercive action”, such as arrest, against him till May 22.

Seeking quashing of FIR, Wankhede alleged before the HC that the “draft complaint” in the 2021 drugs-on-cruise case named Aryan Khan as an accused, but it was later replaced and Aryan’s name was dropped.

Among other things, his petition also provided transcriptions of phone chats with Shah Rukh Khan during the period Aryan was in NCB custody. It cited Khan as pleading with Wankhede to be kind to his son and praising the officer for his “uprightness”

Aryan was arrested by the NCB on October 3, 2021, following the alleged drug seizure on board the Cordelia cruise ship here.

For as many decades till 2014 India has believed in secularism or a nation which does not recognise the hegemony of any religion but treated all equally in consonance with Article 25 of the constitution that guarantees freedom of conscience and right to profess, practice and propagate religion subject to public order, morality and health. India is home to more than nine-in-ten of the world’s Hindus, and also having one of the largest Muslim populations in the world, as well as millions of Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Christians. Indians tend to see this religious diversity as benefiting their country. Roughly half say diversity benefits India (53%), while about one-quarter say diversity harms the country (24%). Generally, Indians of different ages, educational backgrounds and regions of residence tend to agree that diversity benefits the country. However, a sizable minority (24%) does not take a clear position on the question, saying that diversity “neither benefits nor harms the country,” that they don’t know, or declining to answer the question. However, with the advent of Hindutva ideology that propagates “Hindu-ness”, India under BJP is experiencing a move to unveil a modern political ideology that advocates for Hindu supremacy and seeks to transform India, constitutionally a secular state, into an ethno-religious nation known as the Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nationalism). Hindutva ideology is promoted by an array of vigilante, political, and cultural groups, known collectively as the Sangh Parivar. The RSS, a paramilitary organization based in India, is at the center of the Sangh and sets the priorities and tactics for promoting Hindutva ideology.Ramachandra

Guha, best known for his sweeping biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, described Hindutva and Hindu nationalism as an idea which takes its inspiration from 18th and 19th-century European nations which sought to create national power through identifying a common enemy and by promoting the idea of one language, one culture and one leader. In Manipur a state where communal harmony has more or less been maintained, the recent spate of communal violence has inflicted dangerous divide between the majority meiteis and tribals in the state. After the BJP came to power in 2017, it sought to create a Hindu nationalist identity for the Meitei community. This encouragement to see themselves as part of the Hindu fold has come even as nearly 10 percent of the community practice an indigenous religion known as Sanamahism .Under a BJP government, RSS and other organs have sought to sought to promote Hindu nationalism as the dominant ideology and used the Meitei community to advance their political agenda in the state. Tribal leaders in Manipur believe that the recent violence was religiously motivated. They say that the influence of the Hindutvawadis has led to explosion of anger directed at Christians and burning down of churches especially those churches that exclusively belong to Meitei Christians. The Manipur high court order on the state to recommend according tribal status for Meiteis was only a pretext for mobs to target their own community (Meiteis) who became Christians. The trigger that has set Manipur aflame is most unfortunate as it has created a sectarian divide.

When a person is born again, there is a period of time when he does not have the same vitality in his thinking or reasoning that he previously had. We must learn to express this new life within us, which comes by forming the mind of Christ (see Philippians 2:5). Luke 21:19 means that we take possession of our souls through patience. But many of us prefer to stay at the entrance to the Christian life, instead of going on to create and build our soul in accordance with the new life God has placed within us. We fail because we are ignorant of the way God has made us, and we blame things on the devil that are actually the result of our own undisciplined natures. Just think what we could be when we are awakened to the truth!

There are certain things in life that we need not pray about— moods, for instance. We will never get rid of moodiness by praying, but we will by kicking it out of our lives. Moods nearly always are rooted in some physical circumstance, not in our true inner self. It is a continual struggle not to listen to the moods which arise as a result of our physical condition, but we must never submit to them for a second. We have to pick ourselves up by the back of the neck and shake ourselves; then we will find that we can do what we believed we were unable to do. The problem that most of us are cursed with is simply that we won’t. The Christian life is one of spiritual courage and determination lived out in our flesh.

India stood for spread of knowledge

There is a debateset off, among other things, by the review of school textbooks in India - revolving around questions like whether young minds should be exposed to divisive and violent phases of the nation’s past when the entire account of history was made available to the researchers and students of socio-political evolution, in any case. On the sides was also a comparison between Western Knowledge attributed to Scientific Temper and Eastern Thought rooted in Traditional Wisdom and the implicit suggestion that they represented the ‘new’ and the ‘old’ ways of looking at things.

The debate creates geographical and cultural divides in knowledge which are irrational in themselves because knowledge - unlike ‘information’ - is an integral concept applicable to humanity at large.

It is not difficult to imagine that universal knowledge would unite and not divide humanity. ‘Knowledge’ was always meant to be ‘spread’ - unless it fell in the category of secrets that were maintained for the cause of national security or information that had to be kept confidential till such time as was needed for declaring its ownership under the law of Patents in the interest of economic security of the country.

The advent of the IT revolution - with instant communication as its outcome - has enabled a complete bridging of the geographical divide of information and the globalisation of business has further put a stamp on the universalisation of knowledge.

Knowledge enforces transparency. The cultural values of India promoted respect for thinkers, adherence to human welfare and sharing of knowledge for the good of all.

With India’s rise on the world stage as a major influencer on issues of war

and peace, the importance of ‘history for history’s sake’ - beyond its use for drawing lessons for improving a lot of humanity in the future - needs to be examined further in the national context.

It goes to the credit of the Narendra Modi government that India is referring back to its civilisational moorings to bolster its claim as a major power in the world - fully prepared to opt for mutually beneficial bilateral relationships as the base of its foreign policy.

India maintains its freedom from ‘alignments’ and supports the cause of sanity in situations of international conflict like the one created by the military confrontation between Ukraine and Russia.

India’s stand was that the security concerns of both warring nations should have been understood and peace between the two neighbours should have been worked out before NATO’s strength was pledged to Ukraine reviving the Cold War environment.

India abstained from voting on anti-Russia resolutions at the UN on one hand but it also pledged its total commitment to IndoUS strategic friendship, on the other. Prime Minister Modi’s emergence as a world counsel acceptable to all on this conflict of global impact, speaks of the importance India has attained by showing the political will to invoke its civilisational strength in pursuing a path that was deemed to be morally right.

The confidence with which India under Prime Minister Modi coined the motto ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the whole world is one family) for its G20 Presidency is truly extraordinary and is rightly indicative of the need for the nation to reinvent its glorious past that was marked by the primacy of democratic outlook, the pursuit of knowledge and transparency in public life

and also known for the rulers taking care of their people, practising frugality and attaching importance to public morality.

Unfortunately, the political opposition today shuns the word ‘nationalism’, projects rule by the majority as a sign of ‘majoritarianism’ - disregarding the merit of ‘one man one vote’ - and upholds the divisive minority politics that had exposed the country to the shock of Partition and its aftermath.

India has been a land of sages and that is why despite the violence of Muslim invaders it readily accepted the Sufi philosophy that attached importance to Muslim ‘saints’ and Pirs and did not succumb to extremism in the name of Islam.

Today there is ‘supremacism’ of faith being projected by politically motivated groups - hopefully, this will not stand before the civilisational might of India that always propounded that ‘God is one, the ways of worshipping Him could be many’.

Faith-based conflict and extremist violence have to be put down as India in terms of its civilisational past never subscribed to it. India has always followed the mandate that the rulers must look at all subjects with the same ‘paternal and nurtural’ outlook.

A notion still widely prevalent in developing societies is that ‘modernisation’ meant ‘Westernisation’ and this was strengthened by the narrative that the progress of the West was mainly on account of the scientific temper of its people.

It is true that the West gained from Industrial Revolution but this happened also because the independent countries there could practise the economic ideology of a free and competitive market and had a start over the countries less developed economically.

The point is proved clearly by the advent of the

Information Technology revolution at the beginning of the Nineties by which time a free India had acquired the wherewithal to take a lead over the developed world of the West in this technology and emerge as a leader in IT at the global stage.

It was not a lack of scientific temperament but the lack of opportunity that held India back earlier. The enormous incentive generated in India for carrying the country economically forward, has flown top down right from Prime Minister Modi himself whose personal drive to push ahead with digitisation, has yielded unprecedented success.

The growth of entrepreneurship, brisk pace of launch of start-ups and a sharp reduction in the seepage of funds of public schemes are new developments and they all reaffirm the fact that India as a nation could lay its own path of growth and ‘modernisation’ given a certain elevation of the standard of governance and a conscious effort to shun political compromise with fiscal discipline. If invoking the civilisational virtues of India helps this up-gradation of national output, this is welcome.

It is a fact of India’s ancient past that this country was the land of sage thinkers who were so close to nature that they could reach empirical deductions without the benefit of laterday scientific experiments and lab research.

The conceptualisation of the Solar System, the belief that what existed in the physical plane could disappear into energy and the mandate that life was the product of five elements of nature combining at some point in time, were the ideas that proved to be the forerunners of discovery of atomic structure, scientific equation of conversion of matter into energy and the theory of evolution itself.

History of the Gorkhas settled in Nagaland

“Gorkhas” who were settled in the hills and valleys, towns and villages of Nagaland State (erstwhile Naga Hills) prior to Indian Independence, they initially came as construction workers, tea and mining labourers, and military personnel to fit into the colonial designs of the British. Since then the Gorkha Community settled in Nagaland are living in peace and harmony with our Naga brethren. Gorkhas were been recognized through a Government of Nagaland gazette notification, dated October 22, 1974 around more than hundreds Gorkha families and their descendants who have settled in Nagaland (erstwhile Naga Hills) prior to December 31, 1940 in the three districts of Kohima, Mokokchung and Wokha was been declared “Non Naga Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland and accorded certain rights and privileges such as equal property rights, equal educational facilities and equal facilities for industrial license and loan.

During the early settlement the Gorkha Community built a close bond with the Nagas and till dated the Nagas are giving full protection to the Gorkhas of Nagaland. The gorkhas are known for our hardwork and honesty and the nature of Gorkha community are united that is the reason till dated the Gorkha Community has preserved their histriocal records of their settlement in Nagaland State.

economy and universally existing distinctions of colour and creed. India works for assimilation, peace and human compassion for this comes naturally to it because of its timeless cultural tradition.

The debate on what represented the true history of India need not become a political distraction - education of young minds should aim at freeing them from thoughts of a divided nation, unnecessary recall of violent periods of history and exclusivist orientation.

The Modi government is rightly engaged in looking at India’s large population - which has exceeded that of China - as a source of demographic dividend. Its national mission should be to achieve economic growth large enough to take care of fundamental requirements of health, education and purposeful employment so that this advantage was retained for the future.

Prime Minister Modi gives the impression of being fully aware of this larger objective - his calls of ‘vocal for local’, ‘aatmanirbharta’ and clean public life are timely and appropriate.

Indian democracy must rise above religious and regional divides and focus on uplifting the common man economically, enhancing pride in the civilisational inheritance and keeping issues of national security above party politics. This will be the idea of India in the years ahead.

National resilience is built on the adoption of all that was good in the civilisational past, acceptance of the learnings of history for the sake of a better future and adherence to the principle that while pushing ahead with national interests, the cause of humanity at large should not be lost sight of.

ED arrests retd IAS officer in U’khand

NEW DELHI, MAY 20 (PTI): A retired IAS officer, who served as an additional secretary in the Uttarakhand government, has been arrested as part of a money laundering probe against him linked to alleged possession of disproportionate assets, the ED said on Saturday. Ram Bilas Yadav was taken into custody under provisions of the PMLA on Friday, the federal agency said in a statement. The money laundering case stems from a vigilance establishment FIR registered in the past against Yadav for alleged possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of his income.

ED said it is alleged that during the check period -- from 1-01-2013 to 3112-2016 -- Yadav earned Rs 78,51,777 through his known sources of income whereas his expenses are to the tune of Rs 21.40 crore.

KOLKATA, MAY 20 (PTI): The toll in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in West Bengals Purba Medinipur district rose to 11 as one more person, who was seriously injured in the explosion, succumbed to his injuries, a senior official said on Saturday. Rabindranath Maity, who had 80 per cent burn injuries and was undergoing treatment at the state-run SSKM Hospital here, died on Friday evening, he said. “He had third-degree burn injuries. His condition deteriorated constantly since he was brought here and he died last evening,” the official said.

Centre moves SC for review of order on Delhi services

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(AGENCIES): The Centre has moved the Supreme Court seeking review of its May 11 verdict which held that the Delhi government has legislative and executive powers over the administration of services except for public order, police and land.

The review petition, submitted by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said the judgment “suffers from errors apparent on the face of the record and fails to consider the case submitted by the review petitioner”.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, in a unanimous verdict, had put an end to the dispute between the Centre and the Delhi government triggered by a 2015 home ministry notification asserting its control over services, holding the National Capital Terri-

IAF temporarily grounds MiG-21 squadrons

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): The Indian Air Force (IAF) has temporarily grounded its fleet of around 50 MiG-21 fighter aircraft following the crash of one of the jets in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh nearly two weeks ago, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

Three persons were killed after the MiG-21 aircraft crashed into a house in Hanumangarh shortly after it took off for a routine training sortie from the Air Force Station at Suratgarh on May 8.

are currently undergoing technical evaluation and checks, adding they will be allowed to fly only after clearance by the teams concerned carrying out the scrutiny.

The crash of the jet had again put the spotlight on the ageing fleet of Sovietorigin aircraft which were involved in around 400 accidents since their first induction in the early 1960s.

The MiG-21s used to be the mainstay of the IAF for a long period of time. After the first induction, the IAF procured over 870 MiG-21 fighters to boost its

overall combat prowess. However, the aircraft has a very poor safety record.

According to official data, MiG-21s were involved in 400 crashes in the last six decades.

At present, the IAF has three MiG-21 squadrons with a total of around 50 aircraft, according to officials. The IAF last year finalised a timeline of three years to phase out the remaining MiG-21 fighter squadrons. The IAF also plans to start the phasing out of the three squadrons of Mig-29 fighter jets in the next five years.

CBI questions TMC leader Abhishek over school jobs scam

(PTI): CBI officers questioned TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who appeared before them Saturday as part of the agency’s probe into the school jobs scam, for more than 9 hours before letting the young politician off.

Banerjee told newspersons keeping vigil outside the CBI’s office at Nizam Palace here, that the questioning was a waste of time for both him and the investigative agency’s officers, but that he “cooperated in all that was asked”.

“I was questioned for 9 and-a-half hours by CBI … Questioning was a waste of time for them (CBI officers) as well as for me,” said Banerjee after emerging from Nizam Palace. He claimed the real reason why he was called in was because, he had refused to be a “pet dog of Delhi’s bosses” and that is why he has been “targeted”.

He also alleged that while TMC leaders who were unwilling to bend were

being harassed, BJP leaders who had been involved in various cases were allowed to go scot-free. Banerjee’s name cropped up in a complaint filed by Kuntal Ghosh, a local businessman and an accused in the school jobs scam, where he alleged that central investigating agencies were pressuring him to name Abhishek Banerjee in the case.

No perceptible effect on economy: NITI VC on Rs 2,000 note withdrawal

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): The RBI’s decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation will not have any ‘perceptible effect’ on the economy as any such notes returned will be replaced by either equivalent cash in lower denomination notes or a deposit, former

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya has said.

Panagariya further said the likely motive behind this move is to make the movement of illicit money more difficult.

“ We will not see any perceptible effect on the economy. Any currency in Rs 2,000 notes returned will be replaced by either equivalent cash in lower denomination notes or a deposit. So money supply will not be impacted,” he told PTI.

Panagariya noted that Rs 2,000 currency notes represent only 10.8 per cent of the cash currently in the

hands of the public and probably most of it is being used for illicit transactions.

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.

The bank notes in Rs 2,000 denomination will continue to be a legal tender, the RBI had said in a statement.

Asked whether the public will face inconvenience due to this move, the eminent economist said many citizens probably have no Rs 2,000 notes since few

transactions take place in those notes.

“ For those who do, inconvenience will not be beyond an extra trip to the bank. Even that can be avoided by exchanging Rs 2,000 notes when visiting the bank for some other transaction,” he said.

Asked is there is a need for Rs 1,000 currency notes, Panagariya said,”As of now, I do not see a need to issue Rs 1,000 notes as citizens have become used to transact in notes of Rs 500 or lower denomination.”

India’s engineering exports to Russia jump 11 times in April: EEPC

KOLKATA, MAY 20

(PTI): Exports of engineering goods to Russia jumped 11 times in April this year to USD 133.6 million as compared to year-ago month while the US and China markets continued to soften, the engineering export promotion council said on Saturday.

Engineering exports to the CIS country were USD 11.7 million in April 2022.

The value of engineering exports to the US was USD 1.4 billion in April 2023, down 24.9 per cent compared to USD 1.86 billion in the year-ago month.

Shipments to China too continued with the declining trend and fell 15.5 per cent to USD 183.3 million in April 2023 as compared to USD 216.9 million

in the same month last year.

However, exports to Oman more than doubled during the month to USD 153.9 million over the corresponding month of April 2022.

Out of 25 top destinations for Indian engineering goods, as many as 15 saw positive year-on-year growth during the month under review while 10 countries witnessed a regrowth.

The top 25 countries, including the US, Germany, the UK, France, Indonesia and Singapore, contribute about 76 per cent of the total engineering exports from India.

Engineering exports from India continued to decline in 2023-24 as April 2023 saw a 7.15 per cent drop to USD 8.99 billion as

against USD 9.68 billion in April 2022.

Drop in shipment to North America, the EU and ASEAN region led to a decline in overall engineering exports.

Commenting on the latest export data, EEPC India chairman Arun Kumar Garodia stated that the decline in exports was caused due to demand slowdown in almost all regions barring Latin America, WANA, parts of Europe and Oceania.

Sebi proposes to cut IPO listing timeline to 3 days

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): Capital markets regulator Sebi proposed to reduce the time taken for the listing of shares on stock exchanges after the closure of initial public offerings (IPOs) to three days from six days at present. The proposed reduction in timelines for listing and trading of shares will benefit both issuers as well as investors.

“Issuers will have faster access to the capital raised thereby enhancing the ease of doing business and the investors will have opportunity for having early credit and liquidity of their investment”, Sebi said in its consultation paper. The markets regulator, in November 2018, introduced Unified Payment Interface (UPI) as an additional payment mechanism with Application Supported by Blocked Amount (ASBA) for retail investors and prescribed the timelines for listing within six days of closure of issue (T+6). ‘T’ is the day of closure of the issue.

NEW DELHI, MAY 20 (AGENCIES): SEBI has proposed that asset management companies (AMCs) should establish measures to prevent market abuse and fraudulent transactions.

The market regular also suggested that senior management of AMCs should be responsible for detecting and reporting any misconduct by employees, dealers, stock brokers, or related entities.

According to Mint report, SEBI emphasized on the need for AMCs to have a reporting system in place to address potential market abuse and fraudulent transactions.

This recommendation follows SEBI’s recent orders regarding front-running cases involving Axis AMC and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

SEBI has requested public feedback on these proposals until June 3. According to the draft paper, SEBI proposed that AMCs should implement effective surveillance systems and internal controls to prevent misconduct by employees and entities with access to information about fund management and investments.

AMCs are encouraged to customize their surveillance systems and control procedures based on historical data to ensure their effectiveness.

In addition to automated alerts, AMCs should consider softer indicators, such as lifestyle checks and monitoring communication channels like emails, chats, and CCTV footage, to identify potential misconduct.

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): Cashless treatment will now be available to all CGHS beneficiaries at the premier All India Institutes of Medical Sciences in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Jodhpur, Raipur and Rishikesh, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

The authorities have signed a memorandum of agreement with these six AIIMS to provide cashless treatment under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). “Patient care facilities available at six fully functional AIIMS in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Jodhpur, Raipur and Rishikesh shall be extended to the CGHS beneficiaries on cashless basis. “It will be particularly beneficial for the senior citizens (retired pensioner beneficiaries of

CGHS) who find it difficult to submit individual reimbursement claims and follow up approvals,” the ministry said.

The CGHS beneficiaries will have the advantage of accessing state-of-the-art treatment facilities available in these AIIMS, without the hassle of first making payments and then seeking reimbursements from CGHS. This initiative will save time, reduce paperwork and also delays in settlement of individual claims, the ministry said. Till now, CGHS pensioner beneficiaries, availing treatment at AIIMS, are required to first make payment and claim reimbursement later from CGHS. According to the salient features of this initiative, the CGHS pensioners and other entitled categories

of CGHS beneficiaries will be eligible for cashless treatment in OPD, investigations and indoor treatment at these six AIIMS.

These six AIIMS shall raise credit bills of pensioners and other categories of eligible beneficiaries to CGHS, which shall preferably make payment within 30 days of receipt of the bills. Admission of the beneficiary shall be made only against production of valid ID card for the treatment at AIIMS. Besides, AIIMS shall create a separate help desk and a separate accounting system for CGHS beneficiaries. Medicines prescribed by the doctors at AIIMS, for OPD treatment or at the time of discharge from AIIMS, will be collected by the beneficiaries through CGHS. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan lauded this development stating “CGHS is a significant service-oriented vertical of the Health Ministry through which existing and retired employees can avail medical services”.

Clashes between tribal gunmen kill 8 in Yemen

Ferocious clashes erupted on Thursday night and continued into Friday morning between gunmen from the Al Munif and Al Fahih tribes in the Al Wadi district of Marib, the local government official said on condition of anonymity on Friday. The clashes were caused by a dispute over land ownership between the two tribes, the source said, adding a ceasefire began to take effect on Friday night, Xinhua news agency reported.

KINSHASA, MAY 20 (AGENCIES): Democratic Republic of Congo security forces fired tear gas and fought running battles in the streets of the capital Kinshasa with anti-government protesters demonstrating on Saturday over alleged irregularities in voter registration. The protesters are also angry over the rising cost of living and the prolonged insecurity in the east of the country, where armed militias and rebel groups have been carrying out attacks that have killed hundreds and displaced over a million. Around a dozen protesters were detained by security forces just after the start of the demonstration, which was called for by opposition leaders.

The joint communique stated that the leaders of the Group of Seven countries are taking concrete steps to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes” in the face of Russia’s illegal war of aggression. They resolved to strengthen disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, towards the ultimate goal of a world without nuclear weapons with undiminished security for all.

At Hiroshima, the “symbol of peace”, the G7 members have pledged to mobilize all their policy instruments and, together with Ukraine, make every effort to bring a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible. The G7 members condemned Russia’s manifest violation of the Charter of

the United Nations (UN) and the impact of Russia’s war on the rest of the world.

The statement further read, fifteen months of Russia’s aggression has cost thousands of lives, inflicted immense suffering on the people of Ukraine, and imperilled access to food and energy for many of the world’s most vulnerable people.

To ensure a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, the G7 members have urged Russia to stop its ongoing aggres-

sion and immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its troops and military equipment from the entire internationally recognised territory of Ukraine.

“Russia started this war and can end this war,” the statement read, adding that G7 members reiterate their firm rejection of Russia’s illegal attempts to acquire Ukrainian territory by force.

The G7 members in the joint statement also reaffirmed their strong commitment to ensure that Ukraine

has the economic support it needs. The G7 leaders also agreed to stronger language on short-term gas investments in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the resulting energy crisis.

“We stress the important role that increased deliveries of LNG can play, and acknowledge that investment in the sector can be appropriate in response to the current crisis and to address potential gas market shortfalls provoked by the crisis,” reads the text.

KYIV, MAY 20 (AGENCIES): Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Saturday his Wagner fighters had completed the capture of Bakhmut, but Ukraine rejected the claim and said fighting was still going on.

Prigozhin made the claim in a video in which he appeared in combat fatigues in front of a line of fighters holding Russian flags and Wagner banners.

“Today, at 12 noon, Bakhmut was completely taken,” Prigozhin said. “We completely took the whole city, from house to house.”

Ukrainian military spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatyi told Reuters: “This is not true. Our units are fighting in Bakhmut.”

Bakhmut has been the focus of the longest and bloodiest battle of Russia’s war in Ukraine, which is nearly at the end of its 15th month. Distant explosions

could be heard in the background as Prigozhin spoke during the video, in which he said his forces would withdraw from Bakhmut from May 25 for rest and retraining, handing over control to the regular Russian army.

TAIPEI, MAY 20 (AGENCIES): Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen vowed on Saturday to maintain the status quo of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait amid high tensions with China, which has stepped up military pressure on the democratically governed island.

Taiwan will not provoke and will not bow to Chinese pressure, Tsai said in a speech in the presidential office in Taipei marking the seventh anniversary of her governance.

Glazer’s film is austere and challenging as it tells the story of the commandant of Auschwitz and his wife, who have created their dream home directly next to the concentration camp. The constant screams of prisoners, gun shots and smoke from the gas chambers haunt their paradise, but their indifference to such horrors creates a terrifying and sinister juxtaposition, ‘Variety’ notes.

John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise has crossed the $1B mark at the worldwide box office. The Keanu Reeves-led series’ total take to date now stands at $1,011,319,297 global.

Of the quartet, Chapter 4 is the highest-grossing, with $425.3M and counting. Next up is 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum with $326.7M, 2017’s Chapter 2 at $171.54M and the original 2014 crime thriller which did $87.8M worldwide.

Vinesh’s warning: Decisions that khaps will take for us could hurt nation

NEW DELHI, MAY 20

(PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Saturday warned that a “big decision”, which might “not be in the interest of the country”, could be taken on Sunday to protest the “inaction” against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for his alleged sexual harassment of women grapplers.

The wrestlers have set May 21 as the deadline for the khap mahapanchayat to decide on taking the agitation forward.

The wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar since April 23 demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan, who they have accused of having sexually harassed seven female wrestlers, including a minor. Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat said the

decision of the khaps could hurt the country just like the farmers’ agitation, which lasted nearly 13 months.

“The decision our elders take (on Sunday) could be big one, one that might not be in the interest of the country. It could hurt the nation,” said Vinesh at a press conference at Jantar Mantar.

She said that it wasn’t an easy fight and that the wrestlers too had suffered a

lot in terms of missing out on training and competition. “We too have suffered a lot. An issue that could have been solved in a minute has taken a month... the farmers’ agitation lasted 13 months and definitely hurt the nation, so if there is another agitation (like that), definitely the country will suffer,” warned Vinesh. Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia said the marches to create awareness

about their plight would continue with a candlelight march planned at the India Gate on May 23. “We will organise a candle-light march at 4:00 pm at India Gate on May 23,” said Bajrang. “Be it mosque, temple, gurdwara, church we will take our message for justice everywhere,” added Vinesh. Pak Dutch hockey coach resigns after not getting paid for 12 months

KARACHI, MAY 20

(PTI): Pakistan’s Dutch hockey coach, Siegfried Aikman has resigned from his post after not getting paid for the last 12 months.

Aikman, who had joined the national team last year, took to social media to announce he had officially resigned as head coach.

Though Aikman had returned home from Pakistan late last year over a salary dispute, he didn’t relinquish the post waiting for his arrears to be cleared. But with no resolution in sight, he has decided to resign. Around the time Aikman sent in his resignation to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), another Dutch coach, Roelant Oltmans, arrived in Pakistan and will fly out with the

national junior squad to Muscat for the Asia Junior Cup on Sunday night.

PHF confirmed that Oltmans had arrived in Lahore and taken charge of the junior team for the continental event.

PHF has not indicated who will pay Oltman’s salary or whether Aikman’s dues will be cleared.

Aikman had been hired by PHF after the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) said it would pay the Dutch coach’s salary. A standoff between the PHF and PSB over elections and constitutional issues led to a situation where the state-controlled body has stopped funding to the PHF.

Sexual harassment complaint filed against SAI Assam coach

GUWAHATI, MAY 20 ( PTI): Athletes of the SAI Training Centre in Solalgaon have filed an FIR against the in-charge and swimming coach, Mrinal Basumatary, accusing him of sexual harassment.

Most of the athletes are minor girls, the Sports Authority of India stated in a release as a complaint was lodged at the Paltan Bazar Police Station here on Thursday taking into account the “gravity of the matter”.

“As SAI adopts zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment cases, the same will be followed up so as to ensure that justice is delivered to our athletes,” SAI stated in the release.

The matter was brought to light by some athletes of SAI, STC Solalgaon and their coach on the sidelines of selection trials in Guwahati.

“I’ve played some of my best tennis in the last two matches. It’s so difficult to play the top guys, I had to find my best tennis.

“I only found it at the end, that’s how I was able to turn it around.”

Holger Rune fought from a set and a break down on Saturday to book a place in the Italian Open final with a 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-2 defeat of fourth seed Casper Ruud.

“When I was down, I told myself I had nothing to lose, he would probably win,” he said.

“I told myself to play freely, play aggressively as it would likely be my last set.

“That was the key to the comeback - I’m superhappy.”

Rune said his game has lifted at the best moments this week in the capital.

NEW YORK, MAY 20 (AGENCIES):Indian runner Parul Chaudhary won the women’s 3000m steeplechase event at the World Athletics Bronze Track Night here on Friday night. The 27-year-old Chaudhary, competing in her first meet in the event, covered the distance in 9:41.88s, reports Sportsstar.

Parul, however, was nowhere close to her personal best of 8:57.19s that she achieved in July 2022 to become the first Indian steeplechaser to notch up a sub-nine-minute time in Los Angeles. Parul then broke Suriya Loganathan’s record of 9:04.5s, set in 2012 in New Delhi. The 3000m is a non-Olympic event. Parul, who also competes in women’s 5000m running, competed in her first meet of the year in California. There she notched up a timing of 15:10.35s.

FREIBURG( GERMANY), MAY 20 ( AP): With a slice of luck and a goal from a retiring fan favorite, Freiburg beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday to stay in contention to qualify for the Champions League for the first time. Playing his last home game before retiring at the end of the season, striker Nils Petersen came off the bench to score in the 75th minute to take the game away from Wolfsburg — his first goal of the season — after Christian Günter gave Freiburg the lead with a fortunate deflected shot that looped over the goalkeeper. Freiburg stayed fifth, outside the four Champions League spots, despite the win but it ensured the team from the Black Forest in southwestern Germany will have a chance of qualifying

for Europe’s top competition on the final day of the Bundesliga next week.

Freiburg was a point off third-placed Leipzig, which can secure a Champions League spot if it stuns leader Bayern Munich on Saturday, and level on points with Union Berlin, which plays Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Petersen’s goal was greeted with a roar from the Freiburg crowd. The experienced forward has been a Freiburg player since 2015, scoring 105 times in all competitions, and holds the Bundesliga record for most goals as a substitute with 34.

Petersen thought he’d scored a second goal in the 80th but video review showed a teammate had trodden on an opponent’s foot in the buildup and the referee called play back for a

foul to jeers from the stands. Freiburg held on after midfielder Nicolas Höfler was sent off in added time for a reckless tackle. Wolfsburg, which created few chances, dropped to seventh behind Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

DARMSTADT PROMOTED

Darmstadt will be back in the Bundesliga next season for the first time since 2017 after beating Magdeburg 1-0 in its seconddivision game.

That assured Darmstadt of finishing in one of the two promotion places, and it will be second-division champion if secondplaced Heidenheim doesn’t beat Sandhausen on Saturday. It will be the fourth stint in the Bundesliga for Darmstadt, whose best result was 14th in 2016.
