All Staff at Langer Heinrich receive retrenchment letters Floris Steenkamp

Confirmation was received yesterday that the first workers received their letters of retrenchment at Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU), confirming the worst fears that the mine will not be resuming uranium production anymore, but instead would be placed under care and maintenance (mothballing) indefinitely. A memorandum addressed to all staff at LHU yesterday indicated although the finer details are yet to be ironed out with the Namibian Government and with the mine's joint-venture partners, it is unlikely that production will resume. It was also confirmed to staff that Langer Heinrich Uranium is in a “financially distressed position” and cannot function any more without the financial aid of Paladin Energy, the Australian-based majority owner of the mine. The Langer Heinrich Uranium mine is situated some 75km, east, southeast of Swakopmund. The economies of both Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are significantly reliant on the mine. The mine not only employs and procures locally, but the import of mining chemicals, transport services and the export of uranium oxide are some other segments also expected to take a severe knock downstream. The memorandum states the decision to halt production was already taken on 24 April. All that remains now is a stockpile of uranium ore with which Langer Heinrich can continue to produce uranium oxide. This stockpile is scheduled to run out by June 2019. Langer Heinrich expects to complete the retrenchments by August this year. A pool of 20 employees only will be retained for care and maintenance purposes and to look after the assets of the mine, it is said in the memorandum signed by Michael Introna, Langer Heinrich Uranium's managing director.

NANTU jubilant after High Court victory Sharlien Tjambari The Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) is jubilant after it was victorious in its High Court bid to force the Namibian Government to pay teachers a so-called “hardship allowance”. An agreement dated 2015 between Government and NANTU makes provision for a hardship allowance, but to date no teachers received this payment. NANTU launched a High Court bid on 21 February this year, Erongo Regional Chairperson of NANTU, Jonathan Tsuseb recently explained to namib times. Adding, the hardship allowance falls under the so-called “Bush Continues on page 2

Namibians consume an average of 11 kilograms of fish per annum per person (per capita), way below the global average of 20,5 kilograms of fish per person per year. These statistics were recently released by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau at the inauguration of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust’s fish shop at Lüderitz. In fact, the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust’s primary goal is to promote fish consumption among Namibians and to stimulate business de-

velopment and employment in fish trading. Namibia is a fisheries nation, yet fish consumption by Namibians are far below global averages.

Allowance” which is an incentive to attract, recruit and retain qualified teachers stationed in rural areas. Bush Allowance pay-outs amount to N$1 750-00 and a Hardship Allowance is N$1150-00. Government only committed itself to paying out the Bush Allowance. Teachers entitled to the Hardship Allowance never saw these payments and through NANTU dragged Government to court. Tsuseb explained some of these allowances are payable since October 2015. He further said the High Court ruling states Government has six months to come up with the money to pay these allowances in arrears. MUNW’s as Langer Heinrich Uranium to set record straight The Mine Workers Union of Namibia says it has not been involved in the process of Langer Heinrich Uranium's decision not to resume uranium production and for the retrenchment of all employees, safe from a handful that would stay behind to take of the mine's ongoing maintenance and care (“mothballing”). In a letter to Langer Heinrich Uranium yesterday, the Union asks for the CEO of Australian-based Paladin Energy, Alexander Molyneux, and also for the managing director of Langer Heinrich Uranium, Michael Introna, to set the record straight in this regard. In this same letter the Union says it only learnt via the grapevine in October 2017 of possible retrenchments and in fact only learnt through Molyneux's media statement last week the mine will not resume production of uranium oxide.

Father Herman Klein-Hitpass How we knew him Ambassador Wilfried Emvula remembers Father Klein-Hitpass A humble, sophisticated, intelligent and yet a leader of outstanding character came to Walvis Bay in the late 70's to lead the Catholic church. It was however not by humble choice but forced by the circumstances of that time. Those were the years when political and church leaders inside the country were victimized by the notorious Apartheid regime. Father Kleinhitpass, better known to all as simply Father Herman used to serve and lead the Catholic church in Tsumeb and the surrounding areas where he also assisted communities against Human Rights violations, those evicted from the farms as well as those who were dismissed unfairly. It was due to his service that he found himself on the wrong side of the law then. When the regime had enough of him, as in the case of other Catholic priests who used to be German in most cases, they served him a banning order (deportation) to leave the country in a short while. After some consultations with his superiors, he took a decision to put the regime in a test by deciding to move to Walvis Bay which was then regarded as part of South Africa. That decision was taken to see if they will further victimize him by serving another banning order

which could have been understood to mean that indeed Walvis Bay was not part of South Africa. The regime of that time, then seem to have understood the logic and left Father Herman alone. They, however, kept him under house arrest for the rest of the time warning him not to go to Swakop or any part of Namibia (South West) without the knowledge and permission of the Security Service. Father Herman became part of the oppressed members of the community and continued his work as a Good Shepherd, as by the name of the Catholic congregation in Kuisebmond. He continued his work unhindered although he was closely watched, followed at a distance in many cases as he moved around in the community especially when it came to Kuisebmond and Narraville. He raised his voice against human rights violations, victimization of workers and the

oppressed and disadvantaged majority. He used to organise legal aid through the CCN and the Catholic church and organized legal defence for the vulnerable persons who otherwise could not afford legal services. We remember the case of Leonard Sheehama who was accused of bombing the Atlantic Butchery and the Walvis Bay Post Office, the arrest of students from the Kuisebmond Secondary School, the case of a young man who was grilled over a hot plate by the then security police during interrogation and many such incidents. He has been harassed and warned by the security police for housing destitute for a night in his house in town when they, according to the police, didn't belong there. Father Herman will be remembered for having fought for the rights of the oppressed, both in minority and majority groups. He fought against the

Council refuses request Küska 2018 be cancelled A group that calls itself the Descendants of the Survivors of the 1904-1908 Genocide threatens to sue the Swakopmund municipality if it allows the German carnival, Küska, to proceed this year. The town council last week turned down a written request to dump the Küska, which now leaves the ball entirely in the group's court. In a letter dated 16 April 2018, Descendants of the Survivors of the 1904-1908 Genocide invited a group of people they stereotyped as “all white German community members in Swakopmund” to come and explain why “their” German forefathers killed the Herero and Nama people. The invitation was set for 21 April. In the letter the group says they will not allow the Küska to continue if this appointment was not honoured. On the same day a letter was directed to the Swakopmund town council in which it was requested the Küska 2018 be cancelled, fail-

ing of which legal action would follow. Council last week at its Ordinary Monthly Meeting indeed turned down the request for the Küska to be cancelled. The Group nowhere in these writings acknowledges the fact Germany

already publicly apologised for the HereroNama Genocide and committed itself to development aid to Namibia as a means to compensate for this wrong committed against the Herero and Nama people. ·The Marine Denkmal (marine monument) at Swakopmund (pictured) has become a symbol of distaste for the descendants of the Herero and Nama people whose forefathers were killed or suffered in the events of 1904 to 1908. There were calls before for the monument to be packed and sent back to Germany.

Body washes ashore at Langstrand The body of a male person, presumably a coloured person, was found on the beach at Langstrand Extension 2 at 07:30 yesterday. The Namibian Police at Walvis Bay suspects the man washed ashore after death, and investigators are now appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the identification of the deceased. The deceased is believed to have been between 22 and 25 years of age. The person was wearing a grey jockey with the trade mark “Calvin Klein” at the time of his death. The body displays a tattoo on the right hand side of the chest reading: “Loyalty”. If you have any information, kindly contact your nearest police station. Contract Labour system and the unfair wages of t h e f i s h e r m e n . We remember when he virtually forced the Walvis Bay/Kuisebmond Municipality to build 5/6 houses for a Topnaar Community that used to live at the dump site which took hard negotiations with the authorities. And he got it right. The houses were built when most thought it was not going to happen. I vividly remember when at times I had to ferry letters to Swakop for confidential matters that needed to reach the church leadership in Windhoek, we would climb up into the church tower in Kuisebmond to take photos, when the police was victimizing the demonstrating SWAPO members and students of the High School in Kuisebmond, for purposes of evidence in order to send it to the papers. One interesting case which also comes to mind, is when the issue of illegal exploitation of natural resources was highly reported, raising questions as to where our uranium was being exported to.

We used to track and trace the movement of containers leaving Rossing Uranium by night, being shipped from Walvis Bay to Durban, back to Cape Town before it left for some far destinations. It was interesting to note the secrecy around it and how the process was administered over night, moving containers from ports around South Africa before it ultimately leave onto the high seas. In 1989, when I was on the verge of being dismissed as Headmaster of Duinesig Primary, and now Judge Dave Smuts, who was then founder of the Legal Assistance Center approached me to open the Walvis Bay Advice Office as Paralegal and Director, Father Herman allowed us to open the Office at the garage on the premises of the Catholic church in Kuisebmond. That was the time when security was sharpened around Walvis Bay. People were not allowed to go over the Swakop bridge, without an ID when entering or leaving Walvis Bay. Many were harassed, assaulted and even beaten up. We then

used to organize for legal assistance, and get lawyers from Windhoek. The Office used to benefit a lot from the advice Father Herman provided. Father Herman was a man of truth, fearless and indeed humble and yet sophisticated. He feared for no regime of that time. He served his communities with grace. He was a man of truth and fairness, It is regrettable that we lost him in the condition he was but still humble. A man of few words, but very philosophical. He was well informed through a network of friends in all communities. When one met Fr Herman early morning, he could tell what happened in each of the three sections of Walvis Bay over night. May the good Lord, grant him a deserved resting place along other saints and other such leaders of the church and communities. May his soul rest in eternal peace, We will remember him for the good deeds of bravery. He has offered his safety and comfort for many.

Road signs damaged by vandals

Several road signs were damaged and even destroyed by unknown people in Walvis Bay over the past few days. The vandal or vandals bend sign faces, and in most instances they break. The culprits also pull signs out of the ground. “It is important for people to understand damaging road signs can lead to serious road accidents. It can lead to the loss of innocent lives or very serious injuries. Please refrain from vandalising road signs”, a senior traffic official said yesterday.

Lions Club of Swakopmund introduces poster to educate people on environment Sharlien Tjambari

The Swakopmund Lions Club commenced with an awareness campaign against pollution of the ocean. In this regard an environmental awareness poster was handed over to the Swakopmund Municipality and will be displayed to educate the public over the effect of non-biodegradable substances, like plastics, in the ocean. According to Renate Witt, the coordinator of the Swakopmund Lions Club, the oceans became home to islands of floating plastic that not only kills off marine life, but it also negative influences the water quality of the ocean. The oceans are increasingly becoming acidic and cannot sustain marine life as we know it indefinitely. Apart from Swakopmund municipality, schools will also receive these posters as the youth is the future of healthy oceans. These posters will be displayed at school reception areas and in libraries. “Let us educate the young ones on how to keep our town litter-free. The posters will also be displayed at venues across Swakopmund including guest houses and other public outlets”, explained Witt. The Deputy Mayor of Swakopmund, Councillor Maria Elago, who received the poster on behalf of the council on Monday this week said in order for our town to achieve its goal of securing a sustainable environment, we need to educate our people on environmental sustainability. That includes targeting long distance taxi operators, tour operators and other systems which handle people in masses. “Together we must take responsibility towards the cleanliness of our environment, because we all depend on it for our own well-being. This is why I continually urge citizens of Swakopmund to join the municipality in all its ef-

forts in making Swakopmund the cleanest

town in Namibia”, said Elago.

The President of the Lions Club Max Schwieger hands over the environmental awareness poster to the Deputy Mayor of Swakopmund Councillor Maria Elago.

Nick’s Racing

Nick's Racing is your trusted name in the automotive industry to improve engine performance and fuel consumption. Nick van Bergen returned from one of his many overseas trips twenty-five years ago and decided to open Nick's Racing. He never missed an opportunity to learn more and expand his knowledge in motor racing, specifically engine tuning. With the business now celebrating it's 25th anniversary it went through many changes, but two things remained throughout: his passion for getting the most horsepower out of an engine. Then of course he also only uses spare parts he too would use for his motor engines. One of the trusted brands associated with Nick's Racing right from the start and which stood the test of time is K&N Air Filters. K&N Air Filters carry a million miles guarantee and stock carried by the business exceeds N$4 million. Nick's Racing also in the beginning sold exhaust branches and later steel bolt-on systems. This too expanded and today the business takes exceptional pride in its custombuilt performance exhaust systems. Work are done to customers' requirements. Nick's Racing's high-performance, custom-built exhaust systems banished the myth that a high-performance exhaust system must be noisy. Nick's Racing also does traditional head porting (gas flowing), and Nick has camshafts grounded to his own specifications. All work is done by Nick himself and over the years he placed a high premium on

acquiring the right tools to get the job done. Nick van Bergen's approach is roll with the punches, develop solutions on the go and adapt with technology enhancements. Nick's Racing makes use of a state-of-the art Dynamometer where petrol- and diesel engines are tuned to perfection. A lot of research is also going in on alternative fuels for high performance output, like CNG. “The Dynamometer is a tool. It is not a device to stroke your ego, nor to produce flattering figures”. At Nick's Racing one is for sure: improved engine performance, enhanced engine reliability and fuel efficiency. Nick's Racing has highly competitive prices and tariffs. Compared to prices charged by South African service providers, Nick's Racing beats them hands down and the secret here has to do with the fact all work is done in-house at Nick's Racing. Nick van Bergen admits time is slowly but surely catching up with him. He has no one to inherit his business and probably one day has to sell it. In the meantime, he says, he maintains fully committed to quality service, quality parts and do what he does best – tune those engines to perfection for maximum performance. All prices and information can be found on www.nicksracing.com with regular updates on https://www.facebook.com/nicksracing/here you will find a lot of other parts too, such as Light Force spotlights as well as the Mile Marker hydraulic winches.

Was hatte sie vergessen? Da war was los!” Ein grotesk häßliches For-

Wider den Ärger

Musst dich nicht ärgern; wen interessiert's?! Musst dich nur wundern, was alles passiert!

Geht mal was schief, bewahre ruhig Blut! Mensch, bloß nicht ärgern, Lachen tut not!

Tierschutzverein Swakopmund (S.P.C.A.) Fun Dog Day We are pleased to report that once again, thanks to our sponsors and animal loving community, we had yet another successful SPCA Fun Dog Day. The turnout was exceptional and we thank everyone who took the time out to spend the day with us. As always, our Fun Dog Day was well organised, thanks to our great team of volunteers and staff who worked diligently in making this event a success. Pooches of all kinds were entered, and a highlight was the category “best dressed companions where doggies and their humans wore extravagant and colourful outfits. The event also hosted a raffle and this year we had some truly great prizes thanks to our sponsors. The purpose of hosting our Fun Dog Day is to create awareness for the SPCA Swakopmund. The Tierschutzverein Swakopmund operates as non-profit and independent animal welfare organization (WO438) and we rely solely on donations and support from the public. However, as a community it is also a day to relax and have fun with our fellow dog lovers. A heartfelt 'Thank You' to all our sponsors, without you we would be lost and so would all the many dogs and cats in our care. Your contributions are valuable and much appreciated. We have more events planned for the remainder of this year and also in preparation of our 50th Anniversary in 2020, please continue to support the animals and join us in making their world a better place. Contact us at 064-404419 or shelter@spcaswakopmund.org for more information or if you perhaps would like to become a member or make any donation. We are always in need of cat food especially and blankets.

Kickboxers bags 29 medals as Historic Championships

Oom Callies' Yellow Ball Competition We have held the always popular three ball alliance yellow ball competition, which is more affectionately known as Oom Callies' Yellow Ball Competition, and it was our pleasure to have Oom Callie with us and say a few words at the prize giving.

Rudi Bowe

The Namibian Kickboxing team, who participated in the 12 African Karate and Martial Arts Championships from 25-29 April 2018 in Botswana scooped 13 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze medals. The competition catered for Karate – (General, Traditional, Koshiki and Knockdown) Kung Fu. (Hard and Soft forms and Sparring) Kickboxing (Point and Continuous) and Grappling. This was the first time that a competition like this hosted all martial arts participating together. Great for the unity and development of the martial arts of the martial artist. The president of the Namibian Kickboxing Federation Anita De Klerk said, “It was the first ever attendance from Namibia in this championship. It was an all-platform, multi-disciplined martial arts tournament held on the African continent with five countries in attendance. The Namibian National team did exceptionally well and the team's display of fighting was of a very high standard”. The Namibian coach, Sensei Martin Gunter said, “the quality and standard of the Namibian fighters are on a good track, and we are more than ready for any international competition. The hard training of all our fighters paid off in all ways and we set the bar high for other countries”. The President of the United African Karate Federation (UAKF) Imtiaz Abdulla said, “We want to have a world movement of participation. Developing karate-ka will also open entries in all divisions and all forms, starting from twelve African Karate and Martial Arts Championships, we are encouraging organisations to work together and unite and develop jointly. This discrimination in calling organizations 'dissident', because you don't want them to exist is not healthy for karate and the martial arts. We come from the same source, and we are all taking the same journey to the top of the mountain, the route may be different but the goal is the same. We ask all karate-ka and martial artist to embrace this new and open understanding and encourage you to join this movement.” Imtiaz Abdulla further mentioned that the twelve African Karate and Martial Arts Championships in Botswana, was an historic event as it was the first time ever in Africa that all forms of Martial Arts were fighting against each other in one place.

Zone 6 President, Mr. Thuto Thuto says that he is satisfied with the competition hosted in Botswana. The standard of all fighters is remarkable, and that the Martial Arts in Africa can compete at world level, and can bring Medals back to Africa. Botswana was honoured to be the host of this historic event. Thuto thanked all the countries part of this. The Namibian fighters who stood their ground were Giano Alcock, Oshidoshi Delano Müller, Sensei Lesley Hoaeb and Xanthe Snyman as they all won two Gold medals. The youngest competitor, Raymundo Bowe had it very tough as he had to compete against competitors with more experience. He managed to scoop a Bronze medal and received a special recognition as the youngest competitor. The other medal winners were: Anco Snyman Gold and Silver, Darren Nell Gold and Silver, Dawn Spangenberg Gold and Silver, Mia Kittler Gold and Silver, Sensei Martin Gunther Two Silver, Rohan Kotze only Bronze, Hugo Jones only Bronze, James-Dean Goagoseb Gold and Bronze, Jan Willem van Zyl Gold and Bronze, Llewellyn de Jager Silver and Bronze, Stephanie Schoonbee Silver and Bronze. Imtiaz Abdulla UAKF President extends an invitation to the Namibian Kickboxing Federation to host the African Continental Games in 2020. The President of the NKF said that they accept the invitation, but still need to consult with the Namibian Sport Commission before a final answer can be conveyed. The President and all the fighters would like to thank the Municipality of Walvis Bay for the sport bags, also they would like to give thanks to Mandi van der Lith for the Westmed sport bags, and to Dr Leonie van Zyl for the Medical Kit. Gratitude to all our parents who made the trip possible. Big thanks to all the private businesses and people who sponsored individual fighters and made it possible for them to travel and compete. The next competitions will be the Desert Storm in September this year and the Zone Six Championships next year in South Africa.

A magnificent field of fifty four players turned up, including a few from over the river – Rossmund, nice to have you guys visit. Even Willie Pens showed, but poor golf saw him and team leave early. Twenty seven holes on any given day is a challenge, but three scores with a yellow ball in the last nine is a real game breaker for a good few of us, and so it proved. Winners on the day with a record of 228 points were Pieter van Aarde, Francois Champion and Luandre Duvenhage. Second place on a distant 210 points, went to the junior team of Emile Vilbert Jnr, Willie Coetzee and Jonathon Mather. Third place went to Wouter van Wijk, Wayne Hart and Kurt Brits at 207 points. Fourth place at 202 points was won by Potch Alchin, Leroy Rentzke and Chris Bothma. There were three lucky draws, and closest to the pins in two on the par fours were won by Carlos de Gouveia and Francois Champion. Thanks to Herman Smidt, Andre Burger and Grant Mather for their contributions towards the prizes, with the club topping up the balance. I think the real winners on the day, were the guys who took the beers of Wayne, Kurt and Wouter, but that is another story. Thanks to Oom Callie, Callie Jnr and Quinton for the traditional 'bell' after the event. We look forward to the May Day next year. We also wish Oom callie a happy 80th birthday today, 2 May. Last week Saturday was a hidden format competition and it was won by David Peake and Elton Rentzke on 77 points with Chris and Estelle Bothma [drawn together] coming in second on 72 and winning the count out. Third place went to Boel Grobelaar and Heinie Franken. Two clubs were recorded by Leroy, Kurt and Gert Jnr twice. The jackpot was not won. The calendar for the next few weeks is as follows 5/5 Club Competition 12/5 Angolink and it will be special from Morne 19/5 Piscs Medal Fri 25th Nine hole club practice from 13h00, there will be a few small prizes Sat 26th we take on Tsumeb here at home. Just for the Tsumeb event I will be running with this so if you have any ideas and or thoughts please let me know.
