Rostock Ritz on the morning of 27 December for Walvis Bay for the continuation of their tour of Namibia. The Rossignols is not unfamiliar with Namibia, as they have visited the country at several occasions before. However, with only a map to guide them to Walvis Bay the couple is believed to have made a judgement error on the day they left Rostock in reading their map, resulting them taking the wrong turn near the Kuiseb Canyon. Hours followed as the couple tried to regain their bearings on direction and soon a new threat started to emerge. Darkness was approaching and the terrain also became increasingly sandy. Then their vehicle got stuck in the sand. Armed with only their map they started off to where they believe would be a small town by the name of Rooiduin. To their horror, and quite a standard feature on any Namibian map, Rooiduin was a reference point only and no town to be found. The Rossignols had to spent the night on a rocky outcrop at Rooiduin, but was able to reach their stranded car again the next day. At the time their drinking water was reduced to five litres. They managed to locate a water hole, dug by desert animals in the river bed. Although slightly salty, the family managed to bring some of the water to the vehicle daily to sustain them. Unbeknown to the Rossignols, a tour company became alerted when they did not arrive at their coastal destination. A vehicle tracking device in their vehicle could also not signal the vehicle’s current location. On 29 December members of the Namibian Police's Special Field Force was dispatched to the area around the Kuiseb Canyons to start a search for the missing French family. Farmers, tour operators and the aviation fraternity were also called upon to be on the lookout. On the afternoon of 30 December a member of the public reported seeing vehicle tracks leading down one of the tributaries of the Kuiseb River. Soon the police established that the direction of the tracks was indeed in the direction of the Kuiseb River. With the police helicopter also in the area, operating from the Walvis Bay Airport, the vehicle and the missing people were finally located. In their words, the policemen who located them showed up like angels of mercy. Apart from suffering from dehydration and severe emotional stress, the Rossignols were soon discharged after being examined by a coastal medical doctor. They returned to Windhoek and left for France where they are recuperating.

Husab fire to delay mine’s opening by five more months

The fire that ripped through the milling section of the Husab uranium mine, some eightyfive kilometres East of Swakopmund on 28 December, will push back the mine's start-up date to at least June this year, informed sources close to the Mine said this week. This is in sharp contrast to the Chief Executive Officer of Swakop Uranium, Mr Zheng Keping who sugarcoated the fire incident on 29 December with a public statement that no mining operations were affected. “No mining operations could have been seriously affected, as there is no significant mining taking place at Husab yet,” an informed source explained over the weekend. Husab would have originally commenced mining opera-

tions by mid-January 2016, but due to delays in the construction of the mine the commencement of mining operations was re-scheduled to May 2015, this source explained. “The damage to the milling plant is massive. We are talking of at least a five months window for repairs,” indicated this source. Adding, once an official investigation into the fire incident concluded a clean-up operation would follow. Experts are set to try and beat the deadline to repair the sec-

tion damaged by the fire to meeting the May 2016 start-up deadline. Swakop Uranium's media statement a day after the fire reads as follows: A fire was reported by ECPM contractor on Monday 28 December 2015 at round 15:30 in the milling section of Husab construction site. The liners of the ball mill caught fire, and the fire was extinguished six hours later at around 21:30 with the support from the Swakop Uranium fire proto team, Swakopmund fire brigade and Arandis fire brigade.

Very good support was given by the Swakopmund and Arandis fire brigades. No injuries were claimed by the incident. The cause of the fire is still not known to Swakop Uranium and pending an investigation. The mining operations were not affected by the incident.” More questions were forwarded to Swakop Uranium regarding the incident, but at the time of going to press a reply was still awaited.

He lost a total of five fingers on the first joints on both hands and suffered 40 % loss of sight in one eye, when a fire cracker exploded in his hands shortly after midnight on 1 January this year. The incident took place at his home in Kuisebmond. He was stabilised at the Welwitschia Hospital shortly after the incident and transferred to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek where the amputations had to be carried out. Muatunga will remain in Windhoek for an

undetermined time in order to measure his recovery as well as further treatment to the injured eye. In the meantime the public has taken to social media over the incident, where opinions are sharply divided. There are those heavily criticising Muatunga for engaging in the handling of fireworks in a built-up area and those who wish him a speedy recovery. Many also criticise people's insensitive remarks over the incident, and is pleading for tolerance in the midst of the trauma Muatunga and his family suffered.

2016 Sardynkwota 14 000 ton

Dienooreenkomstig was daar 209 motors per uur

Partygoers left beaches in horrible state after New Year Local quad bike riders along with members of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) collected several black refuse bags of rubbish on 2 January that was left behind after the New Year's festivities. A clean-up team was sent to the scene the next morning and it is understood that over 15 refuse bags were filled with rubbish that was left on the beach. “Thumbs up for Walvis Bay municipality who sent cleaning teams to Long Beach after New Year's Eve. I have been at the coast since 1990 and it is so shameful to see for the past two to three years how filthy the beach is left by campers. Elizabeth Nampa Jonas So far i filter only revenge, can it be that we no longer forgive, seems the former mayor had more enemies then friends, for now is'nt the right time to shoot revenge arrows, let us act human and pray for his recovery, revenge, grudges won't do anyone good for that matter, it only put a blockage for one to receive blessings from God, remember his good deeds during his time as major and even if crackers caused a Severe injury to his fingers, he is still human and his family need him. Praying for you former mayor. Cass Bester Why did you play with fireworks the struggle is long time something of the past.

Passenger commends Air Nam

I herewith wish to state, that I twice flew with Air Namibia in 2015, as I did in the years previously. I found the service exceptional, especially as I am a difficult passenger having to use a wheelchair. I am also familiar with Lufthansa from Johannesburg to Frankfurt. However, the friendliness, politeness and helpfulness bears no comparison to Air Namibia. With this airline one does not feel like a third class passenger when flying tourist class. Service in regard to pre-dinner drinks and meals are prompt and adequate. The food itself is good and fresh. Thank you Air Namibia. Carry on the way you do and you will be equal to any other international airline. I know what I am talking about, as I flew with the first jet airliner, the Comet of B.O.A.C. Since then with many other airlines. Dr. Harro Fink

Thousands at Henties Touchies

The annual Henties Bay Touchies has once again proven its importance on the festive season’s social calendar, with an estimated three thousand visitors that attended this event on 26 December. A traditional highlight of this day every year is the crowning of Miss Touchies and the 2015 Miss Touchies is Margo Mae and her first and second princesses respectively Lezaan Le Roux and Bea Viljoen. Miss Personality for the 2015 Miss Touchies is Geraldine Botha. With regard to the touch rugby tournament, RFS Tigers and Alco Bodies took the first and second places in the junior category, with Walvis Bay Royce selected as the best dressed team. Juandré van Wyk was selected as player of the day. In the senior class, team Vrotties won the day followed by team Castle Lite and Die Ouens the runnersup. Campers mayhem when sea floods popular beach Liesl Losper

On 26 Decemer at around 04:00 the worst was to happen for holiday goers that were camping out at Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond Beach, when exceptionally rough ocean conditions resulted in a large segment of the camping area flooded by sea water. Vehicles, tents, camping equipment and even expensive music systems were not spared by the floodwater. Vendors selling food and drinks to holiday goers were also hit hard when the water destroyed tents and equipment. Madaka Ndekola, a Walvis Bay resident who were at that time enjoying some time with his friends, recalled these miserable moments: “My friends and I were chatting and having a braai when the wind started to pick up. It was around 04:00. Later on we were in the car and when it got rough we had to drive away. I think this might have been like a small tsunami, we only read these kind of reports on news but never experience it ourselves Madaka said, adding that the water swamped the area in no time. It caught many sleeping unawares too. A mass clean up followed when people started to rescue their property from the water.

Several pets lost after fireworks Madelaine Laubscher After a protest was held to prevent individuals from shooting fireworks in residential areas in the Erongo Region, many complaints surfaced after several persons ignored the protest and the law. This led to numerous animals getting lost during the festive period. Some dogs allegedly ran as far as the dunes and were found by a member of the community later on near Swakopmund. A petition - Ban the

sale or import of fireworks in Namibia 2016, was thus started recently to ban the sale of fireworks in the country. The petition that started

with a single signature quickly increased to over160 supporters up to now. Mixed feelings were portrayed regarding the petition. Some

members are of the opinion that those who abide by the law who use fireworks outside residential areas should not suffer the consequences of having fireworks banned altogether, due to those who do not abide by the law. According to a spokesperson of the Walvis Bay SPCA, over 20 animals are

still missing. “It is terribly sad and worrying that the law clearly states fireworks may not be fired in residential areas, yet it is ignored. We have to go feed six dogs running around at the beach that we are unable to catch. Flyers were handed out at roadblocks along with safety packets to make

everyone aware of the law regarding fireworks. Complaints surfaced from all over town. Many people sacrificed their time in order to search for the animals. The fireworks are still being fired. What will the respective officials do about this? What is shocking is that fact that it is mostly Walvis Bay

residents making themselves guilty of this trend. What can be done to end this? Every year we have the same problem. To those who shoot fireworks in residential areas, you are causing damage and it is absolutely not setting a very good example to the next generation, she said.

Miscellaneous Cleaning Tips Ring around the collar Dirty neck rings around shirt or blouse collars can be removed by putting shampoo on them. Rub the shampoo in like you were washing your hair. Shampoo is specifically made to remove body oils. A cheap bottle of shampoo kept by the washing machine is handy for all kinds of stains in clothing. Don't forget this trick when you are travelling. Cleaning Scuff Marks Use 3 tbsp. Of TSP (trisodium phosphate) to a gallon of water to clean scuff marks or crayon marks off walls. TSP can be found in the paint department of a hardware store. Wear gloves and do not use on semi-gloss or gloss paint or wood surfaces. Removing Blood from Furniture Use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood from clothing or furniture. Rub gently. Dusting Tip Use paint brushes to dust cracks and hard to reach places in telephones, stereos, etc. Removing Gum Gum can be removed using ice to harden and a dull knife to remove.
