Fuel price increases inevitable The fuel price increase that came into effect in Namibia for the month of May was necessary to counter the under-recovery situation currently experienced with fuel imports. Fuel is sold at N$1,14 per litre less than what it actually costs to bring the fuel to the pump and diesel is sold at 33 cents per litre less than what it costs to bring it to the pump. A fuel price increase of 70 cents per litre on petrol and 20 cents per litre for diesel aims at absorbing this under-recovery and which in effect has to be carried or subsidised by the National Energy Fund (NEF). The NEF remains

under pressure with such large under recoveries. Petrol prices were driven up during April as a result of the international market price for petrol that skyrocketed. In addition, locally a 6 cents per litre

Two children seriously injured in hit and run incident at Langstrand Eileen van der Schyff Residents of Langstrand expressed hope yesterday that the person be held accountable who allegedly injured a toddler and a teenager in a hit and run incident in a street of this usually quiet seaside suburb. On Sunday, the two children, 3 years and 15 years old, were knocked down by a vehicle near Langstrand's new fuel service station. Reports are confusing as to the status of the culprit who allegedly knocked down the children. Both children were hospitalised with serious injuries. The teenage girl suffered both a fractured pelvis and broken leg. See pictures on page 2

Knives meet their end in fire pit Hundreds of knives, panga's and other blunt objects confiscated from people on the streets of Erongo's towns were on Friday put where it belongs – in the fire pit. The Walvis Bay Police, through the Office of the Regional Commander, arranged for these items to be destroyed at the municipality of Walvis Bay's waste disposal site where an incinerator took only minutes to reduce these once dangerous weapons to useless pieces of scrap metal. “We will continue to confiscate knives and any other item we deem to be dangerous weapons from people in the streets. We are realistic about the fact people are allowed to carry a knife it the knife is used for work for instance, but if we encounter you in the streets at night carrying a knife or any other object we don't ask questions. We will confiscate it and if the need arises we will arrest you for criminal prosecution”, it was said at a short media briefing on Friday before the confiscated knives, panga's and other dangerous objects took the last journey into the fire pit.

Sewer water problems Ministry of Works pull up Continued from page 1 your socks The Ministry of Works and Transport is the custodian of all Government property and the Department of Works has maintenance teams which must take care of these problems, explained a police source whom said both the Police and members of the public are equally frustrated. “This is a very bad image. The water has been standing open for days now. It is smelly and it is unhygienic. This is not the first time this is happening. This is a frequent problem and we are becoming fed up”, said one resident.

increase to N$1,36 per litre of the Road Users Charge further put pressure on local fuel prices. The levy came into effect on 2 May. Fuel prices in Namibia is adjusted on a monthly basis and is set according to both international and local market conditions.

Armed soldiers in Dunes Mall – public feels it was “plain bad taste” Members of the public described it as bad taste an incident at the Dunes Mall on Saturday when armed soldiers of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) entered the mall with assault rifles and patrolling the area as part of the ongoing national anti-crime operation Operation Hornkrantz. “This was distasteful to say the least. These soldiers were intimidating just by their presence. The mall is a place where families gather. We don't want an environment where eight or ten soldiers with assault rifles in the hand and in combat uniforms walking shoulder to shoulder through the mall. Children got scared and people really thought this is a police state. What did tourists think of this?”, asked a visitor to the mall who contacted Namib Times. “The mall is safe. There is security personnel on duty and the place is covered by cameras. Although any crime prevention project is much welcomed, we must all know the boundaries. Moreover, with the bad publicity currently ongoing around the deployment of NDF soldiers on crime operations, the people planning these actions really need to take a second look at how they do things”, this person fumed.

Mailboxes overflowing after weeks of no mail “It is either all the way or nothing at all. If you don't want to deliver a postal service then don't. Close down because you don't help us at all”. That is how a frustrated post box holder summed up the situation on Saturday morning after Namib Times took the Walvis Bay post office to task for simply allowing mail to pile up in the mail dispatch room instead of ensuring mail reach the post boxes every day and on time. Members of the public reacted with relief after the front page article on Friday. Only hours later post boxes were overflowing with mail, some mail pieces of which the date stamps revealed it could have spent weeks in the mail sorting room. “We didn't get mail for more than two weeks. Suddenly we have mail boxes filled to the brim and that with some mail pieces more than a month old. Honestly, the post office must decided whether it wants to render the service. If they don't want to, close down and leave it to the private sector to sort out”, said one very frustrated businessman. Utility bills are not reaching the public in the mailboxes in time and often the mail don't reach post boxer holders on time. There is one business owner who explained his electricity supply was cut by ErongoRED some weeks ago because she never received an account through the mail. As it was the deadline for payment, she decided

to pay over the exact amount as the previous month, but unknowingly that was a few hundred Namibia Dollars short. Electricity supply was cut and only when they made inquiries to ErongoRED did she pay in the amount outstanding and electricity supply was restored. Other businesspeople complained they not only receive utility bills late, but there is also a growing problems with clients complaining to them they don't receive their accounts from these businesses over the mail. “We are relying on the postal system. If the postal system is not functioning optimally that means us as private sector get hurt. On the one end if we don't receive utility bills for water and electricity in time, we risk being cut if we don't pay. On the other hand our debtors don't get their accounts over the post in time and that means payments are late. It is not easy to run a business in these challenging times and certainly the postal service is not helping to alleviate the pressure”, explained another. One businessman mail-

ed himself an envelope at several occasions in recent months. He posted the envelope at the Walvis Bay post office and the letter took more than two weeks to reach his post box. “What kind of efficiency is this?” A lady whose post box was filled to the brim after the article in Friday's newspaper says she has no doubts the Walvis Bay post office is underperforming. “Why now suddenly a mailbox overflowing. And that with mail more than a month old?”

No more stink.... Residents along Kovambo Nujoma Drive in Walvis Bay reports a significant increase in the quality of semipurified water that is used for watering the public garden on the shore of the lagoon. Semi-purified effluent was smelly for many weeks during up-grades at the semipurified effluent plant. It should be back to normal now.

A Swakopmund resident is fighting for his life after he was attacked with an axe on Saturday between 20:00 – 21:00 in DRC, Mondesa. Matias Ngwena (28), sustained serious head injuries during the attack and had to be transfered from Swakopmund State hospital to Katutura State Hospital, Windhoek. According to police reports, Ngwena allegedly owed Angula Sakeus (46), cash to the amount of N$4 200 which he failed to pay back. In retrospect the suspect allegedly went to the victim's place and took a generator to keep it until his money was paid. However, when Ngwena went back to collect his generator an altercation occurred between the two resulting in the victim being struck in the head with the axe. Sakues is charged with attempted murder and was set to appear at Swakopmund Magistrate Court yesterday. Police investigations continue Meanwhile, another case of attempted murder was opened against Jonas Jacobs (21), after he allegedly stabbed one Jonas Nepando (40), with a knife in the back. Erongo Region Crimes Coordinator, Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the incident. It is believed to have been fuelled by an argument at the informal Usab settlement in Karibib. The suspect was expected to appear before Karibib Magistrate Court yesterday.

Namibia Logistics Hub gains traction The advancement of the Namibia Logistics Hub initiative continues to gain traction as the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), through its Logistics Hub project pushes forward, implementing the strategies and plans detailed in Namibia's Logistics Hub Master Plan. With the commencement of the count down for the commissioning of the new Container Terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay, slotted for August 2019, the WBCG has intensified efforts to attract more volumes and additional investment in infrastructure. Under the Logistics Hub Project, several additional studies and programs to support this initiative have been rolled out and completed over the past year. Amongst them was the Strategic Marketing Study, which looked at the current trade in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), focusing on major volumes to and from markets like Zambia, DRC, South Africa and Botswana. Through this, the most suitable cargo type was identified and is supported by a strategic intervention plan to move more cargo on the Walvis Bay corridors. The most recent project under the Logistics Hub initiative was the launch of the Namibia State of Logistics report, an important tool to gauge key areas in driving the Namibia Logistics Hub Initiative. The roll-out of this report serves as the premier benchmark for Namibian logistics activity and is a noteworthy milestone, since Namibia is one of the first African countries to have developed a report like this. “Sustaining the momentum gained under the Logistics Hub Project whilst enhancing our business development activities to attract new opportunities to Namibia, remain one of our core focus areas. With that said, WBCG constantly revaluates its approach to the market”, explains WBCG's Acting CEO, Mr Clive Smith. For the organisation, this means fostering alliances and closer working relations with members as well as users of the Walvis Bay corridors, existing and potential. The Logistics Hub Project aims to deepen economic integration and put in place measures to improve competitiveness and enhance closer trade and investment linkages. It's with great pride that the WBCG continues to play a central role in Namibia's regional transport and corridor development. “We rely heavily on partners and our stakeholders and thus allow me to extend our heartfelt appreciation to those that support Namibia's drive to transform itself into a Logistics Nation”, notes Mr Smith. “As a service organisation, our stakeholders and partners remain at the forefront of our daily activities. Consolidating our activities of the past 5 years as we developed and implemented the Namibia Logistics Master Plan, our members and other stakeholders can be assured of our continued efforts to put Namibia on the map as a viable trade route in terms of efficiencies and cost effectiveness”. There is no time for rest, as many important steps have been initiated which lead to the

development of Namibia as a Logistics Hub for Southern Africa. These efforts must continue and the products, such as this State of Logistics report must be utilised. The success of the Logistics Hub Project hinges on a coordinated and synergised implementation of the Logistics Master Plan programmes and projects. Looking forward, the project aims to tackle the areas of capacity building, strategic marketing, better integrated border management, green logistics, port- and corridor development. – this article was published on the official website of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group. Botswana Dry Port

Sea Rail Botswana committed to service delivery Walvis Bay Corridor Group News Botswana's Dry Port operator at the Port of Walvis Bay, Sea Rail has reaffirmed their commitment to delivering cost-effective competitive services in an effort to unlock economic growth. Outlining the value proposition of the Botswana Dry Port, Dry Port Manager Mr. Derick Mokgatle stated that Sea Rail functions as a transport link to regional neighbours, diversifying port routes for Botswana's strategic commodities. “We increase access to international markets (especially Europe and Americas) by having a dedicated port ground on the Atlantic Ocean for imports and exports”, says Mr. Mokgatle. The Botswana Dry Port aims to establish a footprint for future Trans-Kalahari rail

corridor development and to improve efficiencies to Botswana and customers from the Southern African Development Community. As a small facility, clients have direct access to the management staff, allowing them to have full control of their cargo. “We see our clients as partners and pride ourselves in ensuring the customer gets the best possible service”, Mr. Mokgatle adds. The Dry Port's 36 200 sqm can handle 4800 cars annually with its assigned 300 parking bays. The facility offers general housing as well as the potential to
