Walvis NCCI meets with Ministers

NEWS
Piquet Jacobs
The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Walvis Bay branch hosted a dinner at the Atlantic Hotel on Monday evening with the ministers of trade and justice, Calle Schlettwein and Utoni Nujoma, as guests. Schlettwein took the opportunity to air his thoughts on the position of the Namibian economy, “We are an economy with severe skills gaps, leaning too heavily on our primary sector. This is all due to our historic legacy”. He elaborated on the fact when Namibia received independence; the country was saddled with baggage and isolated with no contact with the global economy, where industrialised countries had industrial protection and policy space. The new government however attempted to break the isolation and to become a part of the global economy through
a variety of partnerships and policies that created opportunities for trade between Namibia and global economies including the European Union and Asia. Since independence, Namibia’s economy has grown steadily, yet not enough local wealth has been generated by this growth. There is also an uneven distribution of industry across the country. Therefore, Schlettwein highly encourages a value chain approach. “We must use our raw materials to produce more and more value. Without value and development of a value chain, we will not grow,” says Schlettwein.
Minister Calle Schlettwein
He called for a value chain approach to economic development and poverty reduction which involves addressing the major constraints and addressing opportunities faced by farmers and producers, processors, traders and other businesses at multiple levels and points along a given value chain. “This will inevitably include a wide range of activities such as ensuring access to the full range of necessary inputs, facilitating access to cheaper or better inputs, strengthening the delivery of business and financial services, enabling the flow of information, facilitating improved market access, or increasing access to higher-value markets or value-added products” he said. Schlettwein also encourages the support of local production, for Namibia to become competitive in the global market and to “pick ourselves up from the bottom of the global value chain”. The dinner was held in order to give NCCI members the opportunity to have their questions answered and to create a good flow of communication between stakeholders. Gathering of business leaders, executives and small enterprises (SME’s) under the umbrella of the NCCI is very important as it provides a good platform for meaningful engagement between stakeholders and the business community. The NCCI is mobilising the private sector to be positive and all efforts are aimed to achieve higher levels of competitiveness and growth and reducing unemployment.
Stone factory opened Piquet Jacobs
The Yu Tian Stone Product Factory, said to be the largest dimension stone factory in Africa, was officially opened on Monday and will start with production within the next three months. Minister of Trade and Industry, Calle Schlettwein officiated at the introduction ceremony of the factory which is part of the Best Cheer Stone Group, an international corporation. Schlettwein expressed his satisfaction with this large project, and the positive effect it will have on the Namibian economy. “The shared responsibility of Government and the private sector to bring about win-win situations, whether they are big, medium or small enterprises, they are all important to the growth of the economy and
the creation of wealth. Namibia’s economic growth is still depending to a large extent on investments in the primary sector and specifically in extractive industries. In order to sustain and even enhance high levels of economic growth we must diversify the economy towards a stronger secondary sector,” he said. The factory will be the first where dimension stone will be processed into a variety of final products, which include dimension stone tiles, table tops, mosaic and other commercial
products, specifically for basic building material and building decoration. It is said that 90% of the water used throughout the processing will be purified on site and reused, even the sludge-waste from the processing will be recycled into dimension-stone bricks. The factory is expected to process up to 1 million tonnes of dimension stone every year. Granite blocks of up to 30 tonnes a piece are transported to the Erongo Region by low-bed trucks from several of the company’s quarries around the country
like Karibib, Omaruru, Okombahe and Usakos. They will then be sawed, filed, cut and polished into the various products at the factory. According to general manager, Mike Cai, about 1 000 people will be employed at the plant. Employees to work with the machines will be sent to China for training. An investment of N$300 million was made by the Best Cheer Stone Group for machinery and capital for the Yu Tian Stone Product Factory in Namibia.

the ministry and various SME’s in an effort to encourage an open dialogue between government institutions and the private sector,” he stated. This, according to the Minister is in order to support his Ministry’s “Growth at Home” strategy and that of the SME’s to eventually become big and competitive Namibian companies. He called on all of the

beneficiaries to use the equipment to optimise economic gains. Schlettwein noted that the lack of access to appropriate production machinery, technology and inputs were identified as the main cause for low productivity. He encouraged existing and emerging Namibian small entrepreneurs, especially the youth and women to take advantage
of this support scheme, in order to improve their businesses and by doing so, contribute to poverty reduction and national socio-economic development. Their regional offices countrywide remain available to provide detailed information on the Equipment Aid Scheme, including the application procedures, Minister Schlettwein stated.

New church for Kuisebmond Madelaine Laubscher
A ministry that started having their church services in 2006 in a freight container in Kuisebmond, held its grand opening service on Sunday on their new property, to celebrate the construction of the new building that will have a seat capacity for 1000 people. The small ministry started in the container with 20 children. The founder of the church, Pastor Emmanuel Mutipula, initiated the idea to teach vulnerable children about God. It resulted in the ministry expanding into a fully grown church after the parents saw a positive change in their children. A local resident said that the ministry relocated from the
container to a shack that could accommodate 100 people. More people wanted to join the church services. Later on, they had to rent the Kuisebmond community hall,” the resident said. According to this person the church currently has more or less 700 members. They started renting the community hall to be able to accommodate everyone. The congregation ap-
proached the municipality in 2007 to buy land to build a proper church building. The groundbreaking service was held on Sunday at the open plot to bless the land. Pastor Mutipula spoke to the newspaper about the history and the growth of the church. “The ministry began in A u g u s t 2 0 0 6 . We educated children that were heading down the wrong path to follow God. We also started a
soup kitchen and taught them basic bible principles. One of the parents came to me and requested that we also start grown-up sessions since the positive changes in their children were evident. Thus we built a shack that accommodated more people. We also support orphans and widows and have a lot of other projects r un n i n g. T h e c on struction of the building will start in

Noble to sit throughout trial Piquet Jacobs Mr Gavin Henry Noble (53), alleged drug dealer, stood before Magistrate André Matulich once again on Wednesday only to hear that his umpteenth application for bail was unsuccessful. The accused was simultaneously rapped over the knuckles for what is considered abuse of the legal process. Noble, shortly before the verdict in his bail application pleaded for mercy due to medical reasons. He was arrested on 13 October last year after being caught with a total of 14 pieces of cocaine with a street value of about N$1 000. He has been in detention for nine months and has made several applications for bail, which till date have been unsuccessful. Magistrate Matulich analysed every reason in the latest application for bail and found that no new
facts to the court are justified. He stressed that new facts in any subsequent application should be relevant. Noble's attorney, Jan Wessels, in a previous court appearance presented several aspects of the state's case against his client and his precarious financial position and his deteriorating health, as new facts to justify release on bail. Matulich has rejected these grounds, referring to a previous statement that no guarantees exist that Noble will not return to crime when he is released, as Noble is not a first time offender. About the status of the state's case against Noble, the magistrate said the court can only decide once all the facts are on the table. He then told the accused that he would remain in custody until the case is complete and that his bail application was rejected.
Animal abuse not tolerated Madelaine Laubscher A local Walvis Bay resident shared her distress with the newspaper after she discovered that her cat had been physically abused and was traumatised by what occurred on Wednesday. According to the cat owner she found her cat “Einstein” in a very bad state after an offender wrapped masking tape tightly around the cat`s hind legs and tail. Underneath its tail a thin pipe was attached to make it difficult for the cat to move freely. According to the owner her cat must have escaped the episode that could have turned out much worse, by chance. “I found my cat on Wednesday in a terrible state and realised that she had been through some sort of abuse. I took my cat to the vet immediately. At the vet it was discovered that she had a strange black fluid underneath her tail as well. I want to know what sort of person could have done this to my cat. I do not even want to think of
what could have happened to her further on if she did not escape. I am deeply shocked by this,” the cat owner said. The Tierschutzverein SPCA Swakopmund requested anyone who has any information regarding this to contact them. According to them the cat is home safely and fortunately did not sustain any long-term injuries. The cat did receive an enema to assure that all is well. “Your call or message will be treated with strict confidentiality. We will appreciate any information leading to whoever did this. Animal abuse does not belong in our community and will not be tolerated. Those of you who abuse animals should be prosecuted. We believe such a person needs professional help, because if they can do this to an innocent animal they can do this to anyone. It is a criminal offence,” the spokesperson said.
Police on the ball Piquet Jacobs The Police are taking charge of crime slowly but surely, as seen after catching up with housebreaking suspects in a vehicle chase. At approximately 03:45 Wednesday morning, members of the police were patrolling the Narraville area and made a stop at the Narraville Bridge to observe the move of traffic, when a gold Nissan Almera sedan (N53253W), with two passengers, came speeding past them into the direction of Kuisebmond. This is when the car chase began, with the police hot on the heels of the vehicle. The chase continued to the Seapoint area of Kuisebmond, where the suspects parked the vehicle at a specific house and fled. The police lost track of the suspects but when carefully investigating the area and the car, they came across a Samsung flat screen TV, a Toshiba laptop and a pair of Puma sneakers hidden behind a shack, as well as a brown jacket, a black and green DC cap and a pair of sunglasses in the vehicle. It then became clear to the police that the vehicle and suspects were connected to a house break-in that took place in Neptune Street, Narraville shortly before the car chase began. “These isolated crimes are mostly house break-ins, and alcohol related crimes such as assault. Thieves pay more attention to
stealing electronics, which makes for quick cash exchange. They also are more likely to target homes in the early morning hours and before lunchtime, when homeowners are either fast asleep or not at home. People buying these stolen goods are contributing to the problem, and I request the community to not provide a market for these sales – if anyone has knowledge of such
activities, they are requested to report it immediately. We must work together to suppress these criminal activities. All in all I must thank the community who assist the police, and congratulate the police for their fast reaction”, commented Commissioner Hoëbeb, Erongo Regional Commander. He further expressed his discouragement toward the abuse of alcohol, especially by the youth, and reminds liquor outlets to comply with trading hours. Hoëbeb also elaborated about the meetings held through traffic coordinators, to discuss the recent increase of motor vehicle accidents, “We have beefed up visibility on the roads and put up more roadblocks to deal
with those not complying with the road laws. I want to also advise the community, drivers especially, to be aware of your actions, be conscious when driving, plan your driving ahead of time not to have to rush and please think of other drivers and passengers,” he said. When it comes to motor vehicle theft, Hoëbeb advises motorists to make sure that vehicle doors are properly locked and to not leave valuables in their vehicles, as this creates opportunity and temptation for thieves. In connection with the recent lap-top theft, where police found fourteen stolen laptops in the possession of a passenger in a taxi; seven of these laptops have successfully been identified and five of these laptops have already been handed over to their lawfull owners. People whose laptops were stolen/lost, must report to Narraville Police Station with proof of purchasing docu-ments to claim their laptops. The Narraville Neighbourhood Watch (NNW), at a recent meeting, has decided to step up and become more active in and around Narraville in aid of preventing these criminal activities. They would like to invite anyone from the community to join them, and would like to encourage the community to contact them with any information regarding criminal activity. Contact persons are NNW Chairman, Mr Fisher, at 081 129 4425 or NNC member, Mr Lewin, at 081 350 6429.

Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations.
UKTI is the Government of the United Kingdom’s (UK) trade promotion body. Mr Rudham’s visit follows the success of the fact-finding mission by a British business delegation to Namibia, which took place from 23 - 24 September 2013. The visit will help provide UK companies with updates on opportunities in the Namibian rail sector
and help determine what British expertise is needed. Mr Rudham’s visit is in response to the Namibian Government’s request for greater commercial engagement by British companies in the Namibian private and public sectors. Mr Rudham met with the Minister of Works and Transport, the Permanent Secretary of the National Planning Commission, as well as representatives of
TransNamib, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Namport and British Business Group member Ernst and Young. After the visit, Mr Rudham concluded: ‘I had a number of very productive meetings and it’s clear that there are some great opportunities for UK companies in Namibia. I believe UK companies have got the right skills and experience to help Nami-
bia develop its infrastructure projects. We look forward to further engagement and developing these opportunities’. It is envisaged that there will be more UK companies engaging with TransNamib on projects such as the TransKalahari Railway. To highlight the continued investment by the British Government in a range of projects to support the
shared aims of the UK and Namibia, the British High Commission, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Calle Schlettwein, launched the Easing the Way for Investment in Namibia report that identifies obstacles to foreign investment in Namibia and recommends reforms and improvements aimed at removing them.

MINISTRY OF FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES

From left Ephraim Nyameni (Professional Engineer, Railway Infrastructure), Mr Andries Leevi Hungamo (PS National Planning Commission), Mr Kilus Nguvaua (Deputy Minister Works and Transport), Erkki Nghimtina (Minister of Works and Transport), Me Katherine Newaka (British High Commission), Mr Jakes Rudham (UK TI Rail Specialist) and Mr Robert Kalomo (Director: Railway Infrastructure Management)
WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

partnership with Comic Relief and The Royal Commonwealth Society, has established The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 years of service to the Commonwealth. The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust is a charitable foundation, established in 2012, to mark and celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 60year contribution to the Commonwealth. The Trust has received donations from governments, corporate partners, trusts, foundations, community groups and individuals from across the Commonwealth, and its programmes work in alliance towards eliminating avoidable blindness and to empower a new generation of young leaders. With a five-year timeframe in which to deliver successful programmes, the Trust’s aim is to leave a lasting legacy, owned by the whole Commonwealth, to honour Her Majesty The Queen. Established in 1985, Comic Relief is a major UK fundraising and grant making charity which uses the power of entertainment to create long-lasting change. Its vision is a just world, free from poverty. It strives to make this vision a reality by supporting poor, disadvantages and vulnerable people in the UK and across some of the world’s poorest communities to change their own lives for the better. The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), founded in 1868, is a network of individuals and organisations committed to improving the lives and prospects of Commonwealth citizens across the world. Working through a range of edu-cational, civil society, busi-ness and governmental net-works, the RCS addresses issues that matter to the Commonwealth citizens. Young Leaders from Namibia and the rest of the Commonwealth Member States to apply with vigour and zeal to this programme. Not everyone agrees that leadership can be taught but all know that leadership can be learned, and through such programmes we can produce the finest leaders that are able to transform the vision of the Commonwealth and ensure that the challenges, we as Young Leaders face, are dealt with the tenacity and capacity required.“ From Google Hangouts to Twitter mirrors, the Duke and Prince will use social media to help spread the message that #TheSearchIsOn, calling on young people from across the Commonwealth to apply or be nominated for the opportunity to become a Queen’s Young Leader. In recognition of their achievements they will receive an award from The Queen and a year of mentoring and training so that they are able to reach their full potential and go on to inspire other young people to help shape the future of the Commonwealth. To achieve its aim of discovering, celebrating and supporting inspirational young people to lead the way across the Commonwealth the Programme will comprise or two elements: Awards to recognise the achievements of 240 inspirational young people and provide support enabling them to take up leadership roles and inspire future leaders and Grants to support organisations in selected countries across the Commonwealth that work with young people to transform their lives. Young people from all across the Commonwealth can apply or be nominated to become a Queen’s Young Leader from today (Wednesday 9 July 2014). #TheSearchIsOn. Their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales recently launched the search for exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth to receive an award from Her Majesty The Queen for their achievements in transforming their own lives and the lives of others. On behalf of The Queen, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry will host a unique reception at Buckingham Palace where they will start the search from a state of the art social media hub, backed by Google and Twitter - the first ever to be installed at the Palace. The search for award winners aged 18 29 from all 53 countries of the Commonwealth, including Namibia, who are to be celebrated, rewarded and supported for their achievements, is part of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme, a unique new initiative that aims to enable young people to step up as leaders and improve the lives of people across the Commonwealth. The life changing Programme has been established by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust (the Trust) and will run in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society in honour of The Queen’s 60-year contribution to the Commonwealth. On the occasion of the launch, Prof Peter Katjavivi, SWAPO Chief Whip, MP, and Namibian focal person for the Commonwealth, highlighted: “I wholeheartedly welcome the important initiative by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and its partners, the Royal Commonwealth Society and Comic Relief, to encourage and recognise young people across the Commonwealth with the view to empowering them, so that they can help themselves to achieve their goals. I hope young Namibians will take full advantage of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme and use it to improve themselves and in the process contribute to the wider goals of our country’s developmental endeavours. After all, young people are our future.” NANSO Secretary General, Sharonice Davinnia Busch, added: “I call on my fellow

ENTERTAINMENT
to stardom
Madelaine Laubscher
“I visualise and then I create,” were the words of a local visual artist of Swakopmund, who tells the newspaper that his life revolves around the passion for art and that he aims at being known worldwide for his work.
Artwell Musungate
Artwell Musungate (46), born and raised in Swakopmund, started out with a love for music in primary school, but soon learnt that his true passion lies in art. He said that he loves doing oil and acrylic paintings and that he has been interviewed from all over Namibia by various newspapers and held a few international exhibitions. “Before I paint, I listen to jazz music which inspires me. As I listen I visualise images in my mind and put those images on canvas, which I like to describe as `erupts` into a work of art. I listen to the music and find myself `fuelled and inspired` to paint or in other words `to create` what I visualise in my mind. I used to sell my paintings for only N$200 or less, but lately, none of my paintings can be purchased for less than N$2 000. I recently sold a painting worth N$68 000 to an art
gallery in South Africa,” he said. He recalls that he has done quite a number of art exhibitions in Knysna in South Africa, France, Denmark, Germany, the United States of America and elsewhere in the world. He paints on big canvases. According to him his goal in life is to become a renowned artist worldwide and also to leave a legacy behind. He mentioned that his second child, a girl, is also very interested in art and wants to follow in his footsteps. “I have learnt over the years to appreciate art and what I do. I am proud that one of my paintings belongs to the former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki. Since my daughter is following in my footsteps I can say `long live my legacy`,” he said. Follow him on facebook under Artwell Musungate.
Cardo going places Mavourlene Gaes
Recardo Langani (24) from Walvis Bay is not only a House artist, but he is also a producer and edits music videos. Cardo, as he is better known has lived in the coastal town for as long as he can remember and says that it is in this town that he has developed the strong love he has for music. He went to Kuisebmond Secondary School and knew then already that music is what he wanted to do. Explaining how he ended
up in the music industry, Cardo said he was influenced by people that he grew up with who loved music. He added that his big brother has especially been a huge contributor, since the years of audio cassettes. He also mentions Boeta Lezy as his first producer and recalls how he would go over to Boeta
Lezy’s small studio at the time and study the equipment. He dropped out of school in 2003 because of a lack of financial support but he added that he has put that behind him and is now focusing on the future. After his grandmother sadly passed away in 2009, he no longer had a stable home and would move around and stay
with friends that were kind enough to offer him a place to sleep. After he released his two singles last year, “Ama / nam te” meaning truly love me in a local language and “Ons is hier” in Afrikaans, he says the response from the public has not only been great but it has also been a huge motivator, giving him the confidence that he can and
will go far with his music. When asked if we can expect an album from him any time soon, he said the album is ready but that he and his manager/advisor Young Ben, who is also the co-owner of his record label “Give five” still need to decide on the release date. The album consists of ten House tracks and features the likes of Bertholdt and Brumhilda.

Monthly Monitor for June 2014

Graph 1: 12 Month Returns
On June 13 rating agency Fitch downgraded South Africa's outlook from stable to negative. Standard and Poors downgraded South Africa's long-term currency rating to BBB-. But what does this really mean? th
Market Review: South Africa's downgrade is owed to sluggish GDP growth (-0.6% in the first quarter of 2014) and labour unrest (first the platinum miners and then the metal workers, which started on 1 July). What the downgrade ultimately means is that investor confidence in the South African economy is deteriorating. In order for South Africa to reverse this downgrade, the country would have to improve GDP growth and reduce the trade deficit. This is very challenging and the two are unlikely to improve together as South Africa's growth depends heavily on imports. Other obstacles include unequal income distribution, high unemployment and inflation, Rand depreciation and corruption within government circles. On the positive side, South Africa does have some relief on the side of their strong financial system, foreign currency denominated debt and floating exchange rate which acts as a shock absorber for the economy. For the time being, Fitch has revised its forecast for South Africa's GDP growth from 1.8% to 1.5% in 2014. The next review is scheduled for December. Source: Glacier Research Portfolio Performances: Below we show the performances of cash: the steady thin red line – a proxy for cash and bonds (safety assets) and local shares: the volatile thin brown line – a proxy for different types of shares (growth assets), and my six managed portfolios as graphed by MoneyMate.
As cash, bonds and property markets slowly start to recover, our conservative, cautious and cautious plus portfolios have been slightly outperforming their benchmarks: The conservative portfolio reached 8.8% (benchmark: 8%), the cautious portfolio reached 12.2% returns (benchmark: 8.5%) and the cautious + portfolio obtained 14.8% return (benchmark: 9%). As more equity investments are included in portfolios, the returns become higher as the global and local stock market reach new heights. The moderate
portfolio attained 16.6% returns (benchmark: 9.5%) and the moderate + portfolio reached 20.8% (benchmark 10%). The assertive portfolio earned a 26.8% return (benchmark: 10.5%). Thus, it can be said that all of the above portfolios outperformed their benchmarks by between 0.8% and 16.5% over a one year period. It is important to note that these attractive returns cannot necessarily be maintained as the markets change. Valuations and Risks: The Global Share Index has risen by 5.8% since April 2014. The global economy is improving with decent job reports, better manufacturing and consumer confidence, recovering property markets and a stock market at a record high: · Economist Garzarelli says that after severe weather conditions, the US economy is recovering with reduced unemployment and less volatility in the markets. Earnings, interest rates and the economy are admirable for US equities, but a small correction may take place of less than 7%.
Interest rates are expected to stay low, which is excellent for bonds, equities, economies and commodities. · The European Central Bank has employed negative interest rates to stimulate the economy. This method's success is evident through stabilised lending, declining bond yields, improving economic growth, and increasing share prices. · In Asia, Japan's economy is growing at its fastest rate in 3 years and is out of deflation. China's economy is stabilising as infrastructure spending kicks in. · Despite South Africa being downgraded, the share market has outperformed other developing economies' share markets, proving that equity markets and economic performance are unrelated. Although the South African share index looks expensive, JP Morgan's analysts say that it is at fair value. The repo rate remains unchanged at 5.5%. Bond prices are depending on the Rand to strengthen before they can increase in value, says RMB. The SA Gold Index is up 54% this year and the Mining Index is up 9%.
· On the commodities side, Brent Crude oil prices have jumped by 5.5% in June as a result of instability in Iraq, which is the second largest oil producer. Gold, silver and copper prices have also been climbing. In Conclusion With South Africa's downgrade and unstable economy and its contrasting equity market in full swing, uncertainty lingers. SA's Finance Minister says that the SA economy is unlikely to go into recession, even after a contraction in the first quarter, because the latest data releases point toward a rebound in the mining and manufacturing sectors.

Red Dot Award for New Mercedes-Benz V-Class As part of the Red Dot Gala held on 7 July 2014 in Essen, the new Mercedes-Benz V-Class received the Red Dot Award: Product Design in what is one of the world's largest product competitions for design quality. The MPV impressed the jury primarily with its elegance and sportiness. Thanks to its design elements, the new V-Class is unmistakably a member of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car family and exudes an air of modern luxury. The powerful front is underscored by an upright radiator grille with threedimensional, centrally positioned star and gives the vehicle its character. Typical features of the brand also include the headlamps which extend far into the wings. In the interior too the V-Class demonstrates the clear design philosophy: the cockpit in particular features strong passenger car characteristics, with the design of the circular instruments, the ventilation outlets and the freestanding central display. Both the contrasting interplay of sensuality and clarity in the interior of the MPV and the intelligent use of space are hallmark features of MercedesBenz. This creates a refined and pleasant sense of a generous amount of space. "Sensuous, dynamic contours, intelligently showcased high tech and exquisite high-class appeal make the V-Class an automotive icon that blends elegance and functionality to perfection. The new V-Class is a self-confident statement of modern luxury and embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity in striking fashion," says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler
AG. The independent expert jury comprising members from different countries was impressed by the design quality of the V-Class. "Its elegant and at the same time sporty design makes the V-Class a modern MPV offering plenty of space", said the jury in its reasoning statement in the Red Dot Design Yearbook 2014/2015. In addition to the V-Class, three other passenger car models from MercedesBenz received prizes as part of the Red Dot Award: Product Design. The Red Dot for high design quality went to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class as well as the MercedesBenz GLA. The S-Class CoupĂŠ was honoured with the "Honourable Mention" award for particularly well-implemented detailed solutions. The so-called Red Dot Award, which stands for a high standard of design, is granted each year by a panel made up of international experts. This year some 1816 manufacturers, designers and architects from 53 countries submitted their products and projects in an effort to win the coveted Red Dot. The 40-man jury made it decisions on the winners for 2014 as part of an evaluation process lasting several days. In addition to the award for the outstanding design quality of products, prizes are also awarded for communication design and design concepts.

God saw him getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His Arms around him and whispered “Come With Me” With tearful eyes you watched him slowly fade away, Although you loved him dearly, you could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke your hearts to prove He only takes the best. Rus Sag in Jesus se arms uncle Pietie, ons gaan jou baie mis.

Final touches for Reddig ahead of Junior Olympics
Xander Reddig His participation came about after Namibian National Coach Marja Woortman first met Hyung-Tak at a coaching seminar in Brazil last year and discussed a possible future participation. But it was only this year that an actual cooperation materialised. While being at the World Cup in Turkey, World Archery (WA) invited Reddig and coach Woortman to a coaching clinic in Thailand, but a series of unfortunate events prevented the pair from attending. Reddig did, however, need some more specialised training and Woortman quickly got in contact with Hyung-Tak to arrange a visit which was confirmed shortly thereafter. “Hyung-Tak made Xander shoot a few arrows to see what kind of grouping he achieved,” Woortman
Namibian’s top junior recurve Archer Xander Reddig has received his final touches ahead of the Junior Olympics in August when he participated at a training camp with world renowned trainer Kim Hyung-Tak outside South Korean capital Seoul from 22 June to 3 July.
said about the humble beginnings in South Korea. “After getting a clear picture on his capabilities, Hyung-Tak changed his style step by step. The adjustments were kept simple but they made a huge difference,” the Namibian coach, who holds the highest qualification in the country, continued. The South Korean was amazed at how quickly Reddig learned. En route to the games, Xander will continue his new training routine in his hometown Tsumeb, practising not less than two hours a day under the watchful eye of his father Frank, who also saw positive changes in his son’s style. “Xander learned a lot with Kim Hyung-Tak. The training was extremely intensive and very personal in
terms of individual training. The set-up was world class and Xander is very positive that he will put the things he learned to good use”, his father Frank said. Kim Hyung-Tak started archery back in 1972 and is widely considered to be one of the founders of modern South Korean archery. He has since acted as head coach for both the South Korean and Taiwanese national teams at various tournaments, including the Olympic Games and Asian Games. Coach Hyung-Tak opened his training centre in 2004. Since then, more than 800 archers from around the world have come to learn from him. Some of the participants later went on to win medals at the Olympic Games, such as Ruben Victor of the Ukraine.

It’s Argentina against Germany!
Marshallino Beukes As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and in this case it’s the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Tears of joy and despair were shed all over the globe over the past month, with teams being eliminated and the best of the best advancing to the grand finale on Sunday. Argentina and Germany proved to be in a class of their own, after fighting their way through to the final, despite lots of controversies and with lady luck also having her say in the whole scenario. The Germans shocked
the world on Tuesday, when they gutted the hosts, Brazil, with a record breaking 7-1 win. Argentina, on the other hand, had to fight hard for a well-deserved victory over the Dutch. The game ended goalless, with not one of the two teams managing to score a single goal during normal and extra time. This was as poor a semifinal the World Cup has
ever seen, a largely shotfree game between two teams unwilling to really open the match up. After 120 nerve-racking minutes it all went down to the penalty spot. Argentina won 4-2 on penalties, with Maxi Rodriguez making no mistake with the decisive penalty kick after Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder were both saved in the shootout by Argentine goalkeeper, Sergio
Romero. The Netherlands will face Brazil on Saturday in the third-place playoff and this will be the foreplay to a classic encounter: Argentina beat Germany for the World Cup in 1986, Germany snatched it right back in 1990. The third place playoff will take place on Saturday (22:00) and the final on Sunday (21:00).

The Sardinha family of Multisave stepped in at a late stage to sponsor last weekend and over 50 players in the field took on some wind and cold weather later the evening. The format tripped some two balls and friends turned into foes as the better ball with a multiplier on all par 5’s got hold of some players. Piet van Niekerk and Wynand Breytenbach started the day’s par 5 with a 9 pointer in the bag. That gave them a solid foundation although they did not perform that well on the rest of the Par 5’s, it was good enough to give them a boost for the rest of the game. Janie Brits and her partner Mr Engelbrecht -visitor- did not do that badly on the first hole, but all did not end that well for them. They tried and tried again but nothing came together as they won the spoon by a big margin, ending on 19 points for the day. Boom Boom Barnard played along with ringer Duane. They also did not start badly and carded 27 points on the first nine. Jason, still playing from a 12 handicap, at least showed

Brothers in arms Otis Finck
Erich Goeieman (33) says his road to recovery has been a tedious and painful experience but that he is slowly and surely regaining his form. He and his brother Albertinus (19) competed as a relay team at the Sam Nujoma Half Marathon Championship on 4 June and finished in 3rd place. Both are members of the Swakop Striders Athletics club. Guan Packaging sponsored the two brothers and made it possible for them to compete at the event. The running duo expressed their gratitude towards the company for the sponsorship which enables them to compete. Erich is guiding his younger brother and rising road running star Albertinus who is on the fast track and
eager to follow in his older champion brother’s long distance running footsteps. Albertinus recently won the 5km distance event of the Swakopmund leg of the Old Mutual Victory Race on June 28 in a time of 13 minutes and 6 seconds while Erich finished with a 6th position. This was Albertinus second major title. He also won the Spitzkoppe 10km race in 2013 in a time of 35min. “I want to improve my times and become a champion runner like my brother” he says. Goeieman competed at the World Youth Festival
in Quito the capital city of Ecuador as a member of the Namibian Youth team on 16 December 2013. He was in action in the 3km race event and finished with a 3rd place and in time of 8:37. Athletes from various countries competed at the event. He was also in action at the DIACORE City half Marathon over 21 km in Gaborone Botswana and finished 4th with a time of 1:08 amongst 10 000 competitors. A packed long distance running program awaits the two brothers for the remainder of the 2014 season.
Erich will compete in the 21km event at the Telecom City Marathon and Albertinus in the 10km event on 20 July. They are also looking forward to compete in the Areva Race of 10km and 5km in August, at the Spitzkoppe half marathon (21km) in September and the Lucky Star marathon over 42km in October. Eric will once again attempt the Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town in April 2015 Erich says he is focusing on reclaiming the form which propelled him into the road running limelight in 2010 when he finished
The Goeieman brothers 6th at the 21km event of the Two Oceans Marathon in South Africa, 2nd at the 42km Mauritius Marathon, 2nd at the 10km event of the Gaborone Marathon. He also dominated the coastal road running scene with wins at the Rossing,
Lucky Star, Spitzkoppe and won the DSTV 10km race in Windhoek. The temporary closure of Areva Mine has also affected the road running training program Goeieman conducted for approximately forty learners
for the past three years at Spitzkoppe on behalf of the mine. “I unfortunately had to stop the training sessions due to financial constraints and will definitely resume it again when the situation allows” he said.
