Namibia's Renewable Energy Pathway Could Tackle High Electricity Costs and Boost Energy Security
Namibia is currently facing a significant electricity challenge, withhighcostsandaheavyrelianceonimports.
Around 60-70% of the country's electricity is imported, mainly from neighbouring countries, making Namibia's electricitypricessomeofthehighestinSouthernAfrica.
This dependency and high cost of power present obstacles to Namibia's economic growth, andtheissueisparti-
cularly pressing as nearly 45% of Namibians, especially those in rural areas, still lack reliable access to electricity
In response, the Namibiangovernmentisexploring renewable energyoptionstolower electricitycostsandincrease energy security
NOTICES & VACANCIES
This goal was highlighted in a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), launched at the Africa Energy Week 2024 conference. The IEA's 'Renewable Energy Opportunities Report for Namibia' empha0sises the country's potential to use solar, wind, and green hydrogen to power its future. Speakingatthe report launch, Namibia'sMinisterofMines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, stressed that renewable energy could play a transformativeroleinreducing energy costs and dependency on imports.
“With rural communities being underserved, this report
highlights the importanceofadecentralised energy approach to bridgeourenergygap,” Alweendo noted, pointingtorenewableenergy as a critical path forward. Headdedthat the report's findings would help policymakers and industry leaders make informed decisions to support Namibia's energy goals. The report outlines Namibia's goal of achieving 70% renewableenergyby2030. With some of the highestsolarirradiance and favourable wind conditions in the region, Namibia is wellpositioned to lead in renewable energy production. According to Alweendo, Namibia's
abundant resources provide a roadmap for sustainablegrowththat aligns with both nationalandinternational priorities. IEA Deputy Executive Director Mary Burce Warlick further emphasised Namibia'scommitment to becoming a major player in renewable hydrogen Namibia's high-qualityrenewable resourcesandavailable land make large-scale green hydrogen production possible, but withalimiteddomestic market for hydrogen, initial production would focus on exports. This would require investments in port infrastructure to handleammonia, akey carrier for transporting
hydrogenoverseas. Additionally, integrating renewable energy sources into Namibia's mining sector, which accountsfor14%ofthe country's GDP, could enhance the competitiveness of Namibian products in global markets Alweendo highlighted that by using wind and solar energy in mining, operational costs and emissions could be reduced, making Namibian resources more attractive internationally “Our commitment to renewable energy is clear,” Alweendoconcluded.
