Sewer system troubles:
Ourselves to blame! Walvis Bay is steering towards a disaster with its sewer system, and a considerable part of the problem lies with the behaviour of the harbour town's inhabitants. Not the ageing system itself. Shocking statistics were released by the Walvis Bay municipality this week showing a steady increase yearly in the number of reported drain blockages and overflows. In 2018 there were 8046 incidents of blockages and overflows and almost double in 2019 with 15 033 incidents reported by the public. In 2020, a total of 18 960 incidents were reported, according to media statement. Although not denying the town's sewer system is aged and in need of a massive upgrade, the municipality of Walvis Bay states in the statement residents must do their part by not dumping unwanted items in the sewer system. From sheep heads, fly traps, tires, pipes, heavy duty ropes, fishing nets, clothing items and old camping chairs were found to be responsible for many of these blockages and overflows. People simply don't care and use the sewer system to get rid of these unwanted items. Little do they realise they are the cause of many of these smelly and messy blockages and overflows. Apart from causing their own discomfort and that of their families, friends Continues on page 2

Port of Walvis Bay’s importance to Zambia’s copper mining sector Eileen van der Schyff The port of Walvis Bay continues to raise the bar as logistics hub for import and export flows between world markets and landlocked Southern African nations. South African Covid-19 strain has firm foothold in Namibia As many as 20 percent of Namibians who contracted Covid-19 could have been infected by the new South African strain, also known by the scientific name of 501Y.V2.
The new strain was first detected in Namibia in October 2020 and February 2021. The same time the new strain was detected in the South African population, according to Namibia's health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangu-
la. Although the new strain was only detected in ten of the country's fourteen regions, chances are not ruled out that 501Y.V2 is present in people in the remaining four regions. In a statement on Wed-
nesday, Dr Shangula announced Namibia's health authority collaborated with its South African counterpart to determine to what extent is the new Covid19 strain present in the two countries' people. Samples were drawn from specimens of peo-
ple that tested positive for Covid-19. A total of 105 samples were drawn from stored samples at the National Institute for Pathology (81 samples); Pathcare (12 samples) and the University of Namibia (12 samples). These samples were taken during August 2020 and last month and were all from patients who
tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid19). Of these 105 samples sent to South Africa, 81 could be successfully sequenced and analysed in a process known as “genomic sequencing”. Out of these 81 samples, 16 were from the new South African strain.
“Based on these results, we now know that the variant identified in South Africa is present in Namibia”, Dr Shangula says in the statement. Adding this new variant was also detected in the hu-man populations of Botswana and Zambia. Dr Shangula assured Namibians that the Continues on page 2

Blame! Continued from page 1 and fellow residents, the municipality of Walvis Bay also has to spend exorbitant amounts of taxpayer money each year to open up the blocked sewer system. Just in 2020 alone, Council had to spend N$21,170 million to unblock the sewer system. If the abuse of the town's sewer system can be curbed these funds could be applied to upgrade the existing system. The work requires the commitment of an operations team all days and hours of the week. This operations team, despite many residents not cooperating, continues to serve the Walvis Bay community with exemplary service. As an example: recently a blocked system was reported in Narraville's Koedoe Street. The call by a resident was logged at 12:30. By 12:45 the team was at the scene to unblock the sewer. The blockage was so severe that the team only
concluded the work at 22:00. The team retracted a broken pipe, clothing items, plastic bags, kitchen utensils and various other unwanted items from the manhole. It was clear the blockages could have been prevented had people not dumped their unwanted items in the manhole. Let us stop the abuse of our town's sewer system! As responsible citizens we must do our part to maintain our public infrastructure and in doing so ensure protect one another's health and free up taxpayer money to be spend on more urgent projects. Note: when the sewer line of an individual house is blocked, it is the owner or resident's responsibility (at own cost) to get a plumber to fix the problem. When the sewer system of two or more premises are blocked or overflowing, it becomes the responsibility of the municipality. It needs to be reported at 081 128 8324.
Port of Walvis Bay’s importance to Zambia’s copper mining sector Continued from page 1 mines of Zambia. Granulated sulphur is used by Zambian copper mines to produce sulphuric acid, an important chemical component in copper production. During February of this year a consignment of 20 000 tons of granulated sulphur was handled in the port of Walvis Bay. Although 20 000 tons is a fair average for dry bulk handling by the port of Walvis Bay, this operation was unique in two very important aspects: Firstly, a bagging plant was bagging the sulphur as the product was discharged from the ship. The bagging plant, recently commissioned by the Manica Group of Namibia on a 22 hectares area of land in the port of Walvis Bay, completed the task at a rate of 3 000 tons per day. Secondly, the bagged sulphur was transported by road to Zambia. That ensured empty trucks could haul copper from Zambian mines to the port of Walvis Bay, for export. The bagging of dry bulk commodities landed by ships in Walvis Bay is creating more dry bulk business opportunities for Namport with Namibia's neighbouring countries. Simultaneous, trucks hauling the dry bulk products to Zambia returns with copper, cutting transport cost for producers and creating local business opportunities for Namibian operators, Namport explains in a statement. Adding, it also creates opportunities for increased sulphur imports and boosting Zambia's copper export capacity.
548 vehicles landed at port These pictures show some of the unwanted items ending up in Walvis Bay’s sewer system. Residents must understand the town’s population and also informal housing is growing at a rapid rate. That places more strain on the sewer system. It is therefore important not to abuse the system, as it only worsens the situation.
Two roll-on roll-off vehicle carriers (RoRo's) called at the port of Walvis Bay this to discharge a total of 548 vehicles, destined mainly for Namibia's neighbouring countries Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The vehicle carrier Glovis Cugor (the ship on the extreme left) discharged 159 vehicles and the carrier Liekut Valetta (pictured here on the new quay) 389 vehicles.

Statement by U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson in Recognition of International Women's Day on March 8 Each year on March 8, the world celebrates International Women's Day. This year, I am taking this opportunity to encourage women in Namibia, especially those who are HIVpositive, to get screened for cervical cancer. Every woman who has ever been sexually active should be screened regularly starting at the age of 20, every three years if HIV-positive, and starting at the age 25, every five years if HIV-negative. Getting screened is especially important for HIV-positive women because HIVpositive women are more than five to six times likely to develop cervical cancer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people may have put off important health screenings. However, I encourage women to prioritise cer-
vical cancer screening. This is an important screening that women should not delay. Cervical cancer screening can save your life. When pre-cancerous cells are identified early, they can be quickly and easily treated. Getting screened is an easy, lifesaving action you can take to protect your health. On this International Women's Day, I call on all women in Namibia to go for cervical cancer screening and to encourage their female friends and relatives to do so as well. Do it for yourself, and for those that you love. Happy International Women's Day!

Destination Swakopmund Tee Up At Rossmund The Destination Swakopmund team was back on the course on Saturday 6 March after confirming their monthly sponsorship. Weather conditions were perfect for good golf – leading to some excellent scores. Two clubs on the day coming from Warren Theron and Graham Louw (goes to show you don't need power just have a good easy swing). The winners on the day were Justine Shikulo/Jaco Vollgraaf 48 points with Steven Johns/George Murasiki with 43 points as runners-ups. We appreciate and thanked the continuation of support of Destination Swakopmund to golf and also all the work that they are doing towards tourism - not only in the Coastal Region but all over Namibia. We say a special thanks to Oliver Ahrens
for giving up of his time to officiate at the prize-giving.
