During the official relaunch of the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre on Friday, 6 May, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TransNamib Holdings, Johny Smith, said although TransNamib has 100% ownership of the hotel, the company does not intend on keeping the hotel and will eventually sell it. At the relaunch of the hotel, Smith said the hotel had recently found itself virtually insolvent with its liabilities outweighing its assets. Following a protracted legal challenge amongst shareholders, TransNamib was able to, through a Cabinet resolution and commitment, acquire the shares held by Stocks and Stocks to the value of some N$103 000 000.00, making it a full 100% Namibian owned entity. Smith further said, “by virtue of
that, all of us being Namibians, it is a full asset that we can be proud of. So at least when we invest in Swakopmund Hotel then we know that the biggest portion of it will remain and will be added to the economy in the Erongo region.” Smith also announced the new management agreement with Legacy Hospitality Management Proprietary Limited which is valid for an initial period of 10 years subject to stringent performance conditions and indicators. Speaking at the event, Forbes said, “I'm proud to stay we have walked the walk with you since the beginning, and I would like to thank you for bringing your part to make this happen. It's frustrating to see how long good things take to happen, we need to revisit the process it takes for projects like this to happen as it is providing jobs to our community and provides an essential service. We welcome this development to Walvis Bay.”

ECB approves electricity Second Desalination tariff increase application plant for Erongo Rudi Bowe Sharlien Tjambari The government, in collaboration with Namwater, is now in the final stages of commencing the actual public-private partnership procurement stage for the construction of a second desalination plant at the coast. This is in an attempt to strengthen the rising demand of water for the west coast region.
The Namibian Electricity Control Board (ECB), on Thursday 5 May endorsed public power utility NamPower's application for an electricity tariff increment, which will be effective as from 1 July 2022. Electricity regulator has increased the average bulk tariff by 7.30% from the currently approved tariff of N$1.6982 per kilowatt-hour to N$1.8222 per kilowatt-hour for the period 2022/2023. The approved tariff adjustment will apply to NamPower's bulk customers, i.e. Regional Electricity Distributors (REDs), Local Authorities, Regional Councils and Mines. The approved increase follows a tariff decrease in 2019/2020, no tariff increases for 2020/2021 and an increase of 2.29% in 2021/2022. The ECB considered several factors, including the impact of the tariffs on the electricity supply industry, consumers, and the economy at large. Acting Chief Executive Officer of the ECB Rachel Boois said that the ECB is cognizant of the fact that the economy is affected by the impacts of the Covid19 pandemic and is equally dependent on reliable and
affordable electricity supply. Boois said, “It is the responsibility of the regulator to ensure sustainable electricity industry at affordable tariffs. Future tariffs are expected to increase in line with inflation and to cater for new generation as per the National Integrated Resource Plan.” “However, we must realize that external factors such as weather, foreign exchange fluctuations, and other unforeseen circumstances may affect the project price path and must be taken into consideration when reviewing future tariff applications,” Boois noted. Boois stated that as part of the discussions with the Minister of Mines and Energy, the Ministry availed N$100 million through the National Energy Fund (NEF) to mitigate the impact of the increase on consumers. “The allocated funds will be used for energy related variable
costs of NamPower in consultation with the ECB” Boois said. She said that for the past two years, a total amount of N$85 million was availed to mitigate the impact of the tariff increase on consumers and the economy. “Over the years, the tariff included an amount for Long Run Marginal Costs (LRMC) purposes. The Long Run Tariff Marginal Cost is intended to ensure a smooth tariff path for the future, especially when NamPower is experiencing cash flow challenges due to expensive power supply options or building costs” Boois added. “The long run marginal fund may be used to cushion customers from unexpected tariff hikes or in situations when the economy is depressed or to build new power plants that will ensure affordability on projected tariff path,” Boois said.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein, during the launch of the construction of the Rössing Uranium water reservoirs, recently confirmed a second desalination plant for the coast and central region is in the pipeline. According to Schlettwein, the desalination plant is envisaged to be a modular desalination facility that will not only supply desalination water to the coastal
area but to central areas such as Uis, Karibib, Usakos. Schlettwein said, “and in the third phase, we are anticipating a much larger facility that will supply the dry areas in our eastern part of the country and some parts of the south”. As part of the National Integrated water supply system, Schlettwein said, the Government through Namwater has been working closely to rehabilitate and replace the coastal pipeline network and develop
new water schemes in the area. According to Schlettwein, this means that they have overhauled and replaced the total infrastructure of both groundwater resources that supply the west coast. From the Kuiseb River and the Omdel Dam at Henties Bay to Swakopmund. The total infrastructure is upgraded and replaced, and it now has a lifespan until 2037.

Walvis Bay hosts AEDU Technical Conference Rudi Bowe
The new Electricity Distribution Undertakings Association’s Committee
After a 2-year-break, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Association of Electricity Distribution Undertakings (AEDU) in Namibia held their 11th Technical Conferenceon 11 and 12 May, at the Walvis Bay Town Hall. The Association of Electricity Distribution Undertakings in Namibiais an association of electricity distributors and other institutions with a national focal point and platform for electricity dist r i b u t i o n u n d e rtakings with a direct interest in the electricity supply industry in Namibia. The conference, themed “UNIFIED I N D U S T RY A P PROACH”was attended by members of the Namibian Electricity Supply,
such as Erongo RED, Central North Regional Electricity Distributor (CENORED), Northern Regional Electricity Distribution (NORED), City of Windhoek, number of other Municipalities' Electrical and consulting engineers and various stakeholders from the electricity sector in the country. Walvis Bay Mayor, Trevino Forbes said at the opening of the conference, the AEDU Namibia Technical Conference again aims to provide the platform for all the Industry
Stakeholders to share their ideas, planning and visions for the future to facilitate the winning industry the Namibian Electricity Supply Industry is bound to become. Forbes said, “electricity is one of the Strategic Enablers for this development, thereforeall stakeholders are very much interested in the industry and demand an efficient and effective management of the resource to ensure sustainability.” We know that many intelligent minds are at work all
over the world to solve this limitation and imply that a solution will be forthcoming to unleash the potential of the Namibian Sun.” The mayor added, the progress on electricity storage and associated pricing thereof is becoming more affordable, as illustrated by guidelines that are currently being developed by the Electricity Control Board and the NamPower intention to setup a Battery Storage System of considerable size in the next few years.”Forbes said, “we accept that a
reliable and affordable electrical supply is required for economic growth and social upliftment and is included under the Pillar 4 of the Harambee Prosperity Plan together with its targets to accomplish this. I am confident that the effort that has and is being made here in Walvis Bay will be an example in the region of how the Electricity Distribution and Supply Industry can adapt to a new Business Model to the benefit the community and in support of the Namibian Government Vision 2030.” The mayor said Walvis Bay remains reliant on
services to provide a sustainable environment for its residents, Industry and Commerce. To remain an attractive option, Walvis Bay depends on the electricity industry to supply an electrical supply service that is available, of good quality and affordable. According to Forbes, solar technology has already started to play a role in the region with the now familiar 3MVA solar plant at Arandis and various customers with their own supplementary solar generation to mainly mine the benefit of lower energy expenses and that this trend is expected to continue and has been
joined by wind power generation that is already successfully installed and operated in Lüderitz. “Electricity customers also have a role to play by optimizing their use of electrical power and rather changing over to Solar Water heaters and efficient lighting,” Forbes said. The Association of Electricity Distribution Undertakings elected the new Associations Committe that consists of Jona Hambata, Petrus Nahale, Izaias Ndapona, Paulina Nambele, Leon Hanekom Stuan Steele, Jason Lyambo and Sylvester Wayiti.

A new draft law by Namibia's Communications Regulatory Authority (CRAN) presented to Parliament in consultation with the Minister of Information and Communications Technology, provides for adjustments to be made for licensees of telecommunications services whereby the revised Communications Act provides that a mobile network provider may not issue or activate a SIM card for a customer unless that customer is contractually registered as the holder of such SIM card. Indoor classics tournament 2021 The indoor Fistball tournament will take place this coming Saturday in Swakopmund at the SFC. The first match will kick off at 10:00. CFC 1 is traded as a favourite as they hold the indoor cup in their showcase since 2017. The challenger might again be the first team from SKW. Although SFC is the only club who trains indoors, the first team has suffered many player departures since the beginning of the year hence they shall struggle to remain competitive. However the team has always had a high spirit and with the fans on their side anything could happen. Since this tournament falls outside the scope of the national league, non-registered players and teams are also allowed to participate. The teams are divided into 2 groups. The two best teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. Unlike in the league where sets are played, the tournament is contended according to time with 2 halves. The field length per half is also only 20 meters instead of the usual 25 meters in field Fistball.

The coastal man won their fourth straight game against the visitors from Rehoboth in windy conditions. Kudus scored a total of five tries to pick up a bonus point, with fullback Aston Mukwilongo, right wing Zane Williams, centre Justin Newman, hooker Jarren Koning and substitute back
Michael Hummel all touching down, while flyhalf Aurelio Plato added three conversions. Reho Falcon full back Franklin Busch scored the only points by way of two converted penalties. Fox wins BANK WINDHOEK Winner of Winners Pieter Fox won the BANK WINDHOEK Winner of Winners in less-than-ideal weather conditions last weekend at the Walvis Bay Golf Course. The prestigious BANK WINDHOEK Winner of Winners and Winner of Losers golf day saw 30 players who braved the wind had mixed fortunes on the course, but in the end some players were able to handle the conditions better than others. Fox shot a good 70 to win the BANK WINDHOEK Winner of Winners for the first time after being the runner up five times. Altus van der Westhuizen came in second on 71 and Jakkie de Witt third on 73. The Chris Tempo shot a 74 to win the BANK WINDHOEK Winner of Losers with Danie van Antwerpen runner up on 75 and winning the count out from Estelle Bothma. The club is happy to report that although there
were a few players who came close to exceeding the speed limit of 120, no one did, although there was a 120, a few 116's, a 110 and a good few ranging from 100 to 106. Blame it on the wind guys, I did. There were two 2 clubs - Chris Tempo and Grant Mather were the only 2 clubs. Walvis Bay Golf Club thanked BANK WINDHOEK and Jaans Stander for the continued support of our club. After the Swakop Open Grant Mather leads the pack with Kevin Wentzel in third place at the NAGU order of merit. Last Wednesday we had our first Hole in One for a long time and it was Kyle Johnson who aced the 11th. This coming Saturday will be the DEVRO TRANS P O RT b r i n g a buddy 3 ball alliance. You need to have at least one [could be two] nongolfer or a golfer who has not played for at least one year.
