Health Minister cautions public about scammers asking for ID's and Vaccination Cards
Langstrand speed bumps
The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr kalumbi Shangula yesterday cautioned the public to be careful about possible scammers who are reportedly going around asking people for their identification documents and vaccination cards. In the daily Covid-19 update, the health minister said as the new dispensations of COVID -19 regulations come into force, it is of utmost importance that the public is urged to join hands and take responsibility towards observing public health measures in order to curb the further spread of infections. The health minister announced 599 new Covid-19 cases yesterday that was recorded 24 hours earlier. At the time of going to press the more updated number of cases were not yet released. The majority of cases are from the Khomas Region that recorded 283 cases. In the Erongo Region, 14 new cases were recorded. Swakopmund recorded nine, Walvis Bay three and Omaruru two. Among the new confirmed cases,

Eileen van der Schyff For the last decade the Dias Point Lighthouse situated at the entrance of Lüderitz has been an eyesore as it lost its overall appearance. A team of painters transformed the lighthouse that has been lighting the way to the Lüderitz Bay since 1915 to its former stately appearance recently. The Diaz Point Lighthouse was erected in 1915 to shelter the bay of Lüderitz. It is mounted on a one-story hexagonal stone base and is painted with red and white horizontal bands. The lighthouse has a focal plane of 53m and a 28m tower with lantern and gallery. The foghorn is located 450 meters north of the lighthouse. The Dias Point site with the Dias Cross is open to the public, however, the tower remains closed to the public.

Seafood Shack between a rock and Eileen van der Schyff a hard place Whale Tale Seafood Shack pop-up restaurant, after a Court Order dated 6 December from the High Court of Namibia to the Swakopmund Council, to stop this pop-up restaurant from operating, wants the public to know their side of the story. The High Court of Namibia, after an urgent application from Swakopmund residents on grounds of breach of the holiday town's town planning scheme ordered the Municipal Council of Swakopmund to stop the residential operation of not only this pop-up restaurant, but any other similar establishments. Owners of The Seafood Shack pop-up restaurant, Heidi Garbade and Sebastian Wrede in a telephonic interview with the Namib Times, told the newspaper, the idea of imitating successful pop-up restaurants in South Africa, was born when they lost their jobs this year. Although the concept is not new, it is foreign to Namibia. “It's an “All –you-can-eat” seafood site right on the beach, running for a period of four weeks over the festive season, “explained Garbade. This temporary site was aimed at alleviating the rush-and-push of trying to find seating amongst the holiday makers. The Swakopmund Municipal Council was approached and were enthusiastic about the idea. Sites were proposed, agreed upon, various submission were made, and written authority was given for the goahead. “We followed all the rules and due process. We first went to The Wreck surf-spot on the beach at the end of Garoeb Street, where only 23 distant upmarket home owners complained, based on various reasons such as noise-pollution, and the smell of seafood to name a few,” said Garbade. Residents in the area objected and forced the Municipal Council to move the pop-up restaurant. The pop-up restaurant was moved further away by the council to Pebble Beach at Mile 4. “The Swakopmund Council was very helpful, and we had an amazing set-up there, which was much appreciated. We planned our opening with fifty people and started cooking, fires were burning and drinks were being chilled.” After briefly being at this site, working day and night rebuilding and recreating everything, Garbade and Wrede had to send all their customers away on the opening day of the pop-up restaurant. “All of a sudden the same lawyer got a High Court Order against the council ordering the council to stop us from operating. The worst part is, this was 1.5 hours before our first guests were supposed to arrive. After everything,
and all the work, we had no choice but to call and cancel our guests and abide by the orders,” the disgruntled Garbade said. It is in the owners of this pop-up restaurant's opinion; the older generation of the town does not want the younger generation to succeed or come up with new ideas. Garbade explains: “This is very sad for Swakopmund. We have over 250 signatures from people in the area, and it's only a temporary pop-up structure over a period of four weeks. There is a general head scratch as to the objections. Now they want to move us again, for the third time, after we missed our opening. We must rebuild and restructure everything and make a way regarding funding just to move to the worst place in Swakopmund, with hidden view and little parking. A location known for car-boot parties and folks that have had one too many. This is not the image we wish to portray. We cater for families in a family friendly environment and for corporate business clients. We will have to rebuild, reorganize, restructure, and refund the whole Seafood Shack.” Who would be carrying all these moving expenses? Food is going to waste, staff are waiting in anticipation to operate further, and now we remain between a rock and a hard place, without the beach! We have suggested three other places to move to 20 meters toward Pebble beach, where our present set up currently is, next to the yellow bus or on the open space opposite Wurstbude. The 5 chancellors, of whom only two voted, that overrule the Swakopmund council decided they on giving us the worst place to operate from, even though the land is owned by council who are very capable of helping us but chose not to. We have paid a substantial amount of money to rent the council land. We have been shuffled from pillar to post and still we are no way closer to fulfilling our dream and plan. We want the counsil to situate us in a spot where it makes sense for everyone or reimburse us for all our expenses and loss of income. I want to make it known that they had the capacity to help, but by their own choice, chose not to. Due to the response, we saw from our fellow Namibians on social media, we request the public to comment on our Facebook Page, Seafood Shack Swakopmund, as to your suggestions. What do you think of the Seafood Shack concept and idea, and would you support this going forward? You can also email us at booking@seafood-swakop.com Thank you for the support we have received so far, and we endeavor to find a workable solution to provide you all with the best seafood, on a beach.”

Microchip records history of penguin rescued at Walvis Bay harbour Eileen van der Schyff
A very emancipated penguin spotted and rescued at the Walvis Bay harbour on 23 October, has a really interesting history. A history which could be traced. The penguin, dubbed Chippie was microchipped in August last year before her release into the wild from Stony Point Penguin Colony east of Cape Town. Chippies history showed she was rescued as an abandoned egg at Boulders Penguin Colony, Cape Town in May last year. She was hatched and raised at the Southern African Foundation for the The first of three speed humps going up in Langstrand's 1st street Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in Cape Town. When chippie was released, she headed north, following marine habitat cues (chemical cues used for communication, homing ability, habitat selection, sensing predators and prey) Interestingly, some of these cues are susceptible to changes in the pH of water. She swam past Cape Town, past the Orange River mouth and up the Namibian coastline. Penguins rely on krill, anchovy and sardines to survive, but human fishing of these food web pillars in Namibian waters has significantly impacted penguin population sizes and Chippie found herself a victim of an ecological trap. At the same time, it was time for Chippie to moult. For this process a penguin needs a lot of fat reserves. At the time of her rescue from the Walvis Bay harbour, Chippie's old feathers were no longer keeping her waterproof and warm at sea, she was thin and her plumage looked moth-eaten. Chippie was placed in the expert care of local seabird rescuers, Dr Sandra Dantu and Mark Boorman in Swakopmund where she quickly gained weight and moulted into a brand-new, snug, waterproof diving suit. By the end of November, she was ready to return to the wild. The penguin got a ride to Lüderitz from Swakopmund with Pilot, Isak Kotze who offered a ride. Chippie was picked up at the Aus airfield and was taken to Guano Bay, opposite Halifax Island on 11 December. After a little hesitation, Chippie darted off to freedom in a northwesterly direction past Halifax Island.

The #Aonin Community Trust, establish by the Ministry of Environment, Forestryand Tourism (MEFT) is part of several innovative strategies adopted by Namibia to achieve biodiversity conservation within the framework of national plans and poverty reduction, which included benefit-sharing. The Topnaars, a community of about 2 000 peoplein the NamibNaukluft and DorobNational Parks was officially recognized by MEFT on 1September. The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism,PohambaShifeta said the Topnaar community now have the responsibility as an association to work with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism in the management of wildlife resources in the Namib Naukluft and Dorob National Park. According to Shifeta, the Topnaar community can make about N$3 million annually from both concessions. This is apart from the last two years where tourism was down due to Covid-19. “We want to see money generated through the utilization of wildlife and from tourism concessions going to the community in terms of building classrooms, rural electrification of our villages, medical support to communities, and provision of water to communities, humanwildlife conflict mitigation, support to school learners and University students, and many other developmental projects.” “The parks are endowed with unique plants and animals, beautiful natural landscapes and diverse cultures of people, which when combined have the potential to support conservation and ultimately carry significant economic rewards for the Topnaar community,” Shifeta said. The minister said that the misuse and misappropriation of the association's property and finances by individuals is at the expense of the broader community. Therefore, association's management should ensure that the tourism concessions benefit the community, and not individuals as it distressing government's innovative strategies to achieve biodiversity conservation within the framework of a national development plan and poverty reduction. “The money that is coming from the two tourist concessions should be able to develop the community, such as building classrooms, for rural electrification, the provision of water as well as support learners. But the money is only benefiting individuals while the community at large suffers in poverty,” he added. The minister told the Topnaars that not having annual general meetings before spending income, and the fact that only a selected few know about their community's financial affairs, is a huge challenge. He told them that what has happened in the past should be corrected and that there should be more transparency. “We need to get the financial records and know how much money was made, and collaboratethe income with the books of the ministry.” Shifeta added that as from now all the money that comes into the accountmust be used for community projects.

Cavema donates one ton of fish for the disabled Sharlien Tjambari
Cavema Fishing, through the office of the Governor of the Walvis Bay Rural Constituancy, Cllr Florian Donatus Tegako, donated one ton of Maasbanker to people living with disabilities in Walvis Bay. Fifty-three registered people living with disabilities in the town was identified and invited to a lunch, aimed at very important people, people living with disabilities at the office of the Walvis Bay Rural Constituency on Wednesday, 22 December 2021. Group Human Resources Manager of Cavema Fishing, Sonny Ndalumbumo said the donation is for the upcoming function. “This year was not a good year; the economic downturn did not spare anyone. Be as it may there are those exceptional circumstances, where you then have to say, even if it is your last cent, you just have to do it and this handover is one of those exceptional instances where Cavema Fishing have thought of giving a small donation and we hope that the people living with disabilities will enjoy the nutrients of out fish product.” Governor of the Erongo Region, Neville Andre Itope expressed his gratitude to Cllr Tegako for this gesture towards a very important group of people in our society who are excluded from many services and activities, and that the cries of the community are heard to not discriminate and exclude the disabled from services they are just as entitled to as anyone else. “Christmas is one of the most important times of the year, and many might not be able to spend time with their loved ones, many might not be able to have something to eat or to celebrate Christmas, but I am happy that this less privileged group was identified to celebrate and be remembered for their good work. What is important, is that as community members, as leaders in our communities, as private sectors we have an obligation to assist and help the less privileged in our society.” Itope said. Tegako said the Walvis Bay Rural office plans to have a lunch with people living with disabilities. “I approached the office of the governor to help and solicit funds from the good fishing industry for assistance by donating fish towards our people. There are some people living with disabilities who might not recall the taste of fish because they are hidden by family members and so on. We want them to go out, join us, give them something to eat and something to take home to prepare for Christmas”, said Tegako. A box of fish will accompany a goodies package prepared for the people living with disabilities as a Christmas hamper. Tegako said he used his entertainment allowance as councillor to buy food for the early Christmas lunch for people living with disabilities so the ton of fish will be given as a gift hamper. A ton of fish is 50 twenty-kilogram boxes of fish.

Mayor's Christmas Message On behalf of my family and the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay, I would like to extend my best wishes to all residents and visitors to enjoy a peaceful Christmas and a wonderful holiday season. This is a very exhilarating time of the year as we welcome local and international visitors to Walvis Bay. During my previous working life, I regularly worked throughout the Christmas and New Year period so I would like to pay special thanks to those who continue to do so, such as the police, fire service personnel, nurses and doctors, hospital and care staff, the hospitality and retail workers, and all those who keep our utilities running. In all honesty, the year was tough, but we still delivered to the best of our ability. We won't always get it right but rest assured, we are trying our best. I would like to appeal to motorists and pedes-

During this season of hope and joy, I offer my sincere thanks to all of our residents for their continued collaboration and support. Our locals are the foundation of Walvis Bay and their active civic engagement contributes significantly to the progress and advancement of our town. I also express my appreciation to all municipal employees for their dedication, commitment, and service to our community. As the New Year approaches, we look forward to embracing new and exciting opportunities. Last, but by no means least, I'd like to drive the message home that Christmas is not only a time of joy and festivity, but also the time of year when we should look out for those who are alone, vulnerable, or without close family ties. Water safety:
Summer is here and everybody is in a holiday mood and relaxed. However, the best time of the year can easily end in tragedy. Parents should always be vigilant when children are around water, in fact, this should be the number one safety concern every holiday. · Parents should ensure their child is water safe by taking them for swimming lessons from an early age. · NEVER leave a child unattended where there is open water like swimming pools, dams, ponds, baths and even buckets with water in. · Make sure your pool cover is always on when the pool is not being used. A physical barrier around the pool is also advisable, one that a child cannot open or climb over or be left open by someone else. · NEVER trust other people to look after your child when there is open water. · Many children drown when in the care of family members or friends. · Make sure your child's swim wear is easily
seen even under water. · Should a child be found unconscious in water, start CPR immediately. (An unconscious child that is pulled out of the water and not resuscitated on the spot but rather rushed to the hospital without continuous CPR is less likely to survive.) · Call an ambulance with paramedics while someone else continues to perform CPR. · Always take a child that was found submerged in water to be checked out by a doctor at the emergency room of the hospital. · Even after successful resuscitation one can experience secondary drowning when all the water absorbed into the blood steam is leaked back into the lungs, hours later. · Be careful and be responsible and have a safe holiday season.

NBL committed to road safety
With road accidents and fatalities on Namibian roads peaking during the festive season, Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group and member of the Namibia Road Safety Forum (NRSF) – has re-affirmed its commitment to the national road safety campaign for the 2021 December holidays. NBL remains an advocate for responsible consumption. NBL, through its 'Don't Drink and Drive' campaign, which is aimed at promoting safer and accident-free roads in Namibia, sponsored the Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL) with 500 cases of its water brand, AquaSplash. Valued at N$82 500, this donation will support the efforts of frontline officers who will be stationed at roadblocks during the festive season. NBL further sponsored breathalyser equipment disposables worth N$53 700 as a token of support for the work done by the Namibian Police to keep our roads safe – a worthy cause and effort that speaks directly to the O&L Group Purpose, 'Creating a future, enhancing life'. NBL Managing Director (MD), Marco Wenk: “As the global COVID-19 pandemic has and still greatly impacts our country, we have already seen an alarming number of fatal road accidents this year. Road safety is the responsibility of each one of us and all Namibians must therefore join forces to tackle this enormous challenge we face daily as a nation for our society to move towards a safer future”. The NBL sponsorship will be effectively spread in usage at roadblocks in six (6) regions: Hardap, Khomas, Erongo, Oshikoto, Oshana and Otjozondjupa. According to NAMPOL Major General J S Shikongo, Deputy Inspector-General for Operations: “The festive season is characterised by an increased number of road users travelling to various destinations. The increased vehicle population on our national roads and
the behaviours of road users demands higher levels of vigilance and preparedness. We truly appreciate
NBL's continued unwavering support for the work of law enforcement, particularly during this time
of festivities where the police need a helping hand to ensure traffic laws are enforced.” Wenk further urged Namibian motorists and holidaymakers: “Pace yourself, Know the limits, Don't Drink and Drive, and enjoy a safe and pleasant holiday.”

Sun safety this holiday season
Stay safe in the sun this holiday and protect your skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These UV rays from the sun can be harmful and damage your skin and over time lead to wrinkled skin, sagging skin, dry skin, colour changes on the skin, and the main risk of overexposure of unprotected skin to the sun's rays, skin cancer. The most harmful to the skin of UV rays are UVA and UVB rays which causes darkening of the skin, known as tanning. The sun's rays passing through your vehicle's windows can damage your skin. At the coast, some of the worst cases of sunburn happen on overcast days. Snow, ice, sand, water and concrete around pools reflect the sun's rays and contribute to sunburn. Before going outdoors, apply sunscreen. Try to stay out of the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM when the
sun's rays are the strongest. Wear protective, tightly woven clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt and pants. If you are sensitive to the sun, consider buying sun protective lightweight clothing. Use an umbrella for shade. Wear a tightly woven hat with a round brim. The brim of the hat should be at least 4 inches wide. Protect your eyes from sunlight with sunglasses, even when walking short distances. Do not use tanning beds and tan-ning salons. Their UV light causes early aging and increases your risk of skin cancer.

Traveling journalists in awe with Namibian Contributed hospitality experience
We are two dusty traveling journalist who stumbled upon a Mediterranean haven, an oasis in the Namib desert dunes along the Atlantic Ocean's edge. Eric's Cove, a restaurant in Langstrand. The cloudland horizon, rubricated by the sinking sun especially caught our attention. Our rumbling bellies were paused by the idyllic summer land charm. The Greek beach style influence of white, blue and red decor was soothing and calming to the mind. As the glistening waves gently kissed the shoreline in its ebb and flow, a softly lit pier stretched into the sea and tranquil desert sand dunes tower behind us. Giggling children frolic in the sand pit, others float through the air on a jumping castle, while teens take panoramic selfie photographs. Nestled together, a cosy couple have an intimate celebration, a birthday party table revel at their burgers and pizzas and the barman carries frosted beer jugs to thirsty
tourist. Our beloved Swiss Shepherd, Aquarius, runs in front of us and is lovingly welcomed by the restaurant owners, Albert and Yvette, who love dogs as much as people. Aquarius, was allowed with us at our warm and snug fireside table. The casual and relaxed staff welcomed us kindly, friendly and professionally. We were treated like honoured guests by the friendly always smiling waitress Maureen. The scintillating aroma from the kitchen wafted up to our noses, the plates of food carried to nearby tables made us salivate. Our food arrived, our prime beef mushroom burger and succulent pork schnitzel were brimming over the
17 platters, we feasted as if we were at a sensory party. We cleared our plates down to the last morsel. Mimi, the cook took a moment from her busy schedule to acknowledge our compliments. Truly a lady with the hands of a magician who humbly serves her passion in a toil of love. The superspeed free Wi-Fi, quality of service and affordable a la carte menu, all wrapped up in the warm ambiance, is the cherry on the cake for working travelers and all. This well-kept secret of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay has now been exposed as the Jewel of the Dunes. We recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Swakopmund
Swakopmund Mayor’s Christmas message I am sure you will all agree that the year 2021, much like 2020, was filled with obstacles as much as it was blessed. The aftermath of Covid 19 in 2020 impacted businesses, government, education, and communities all throughout the nation. Therefore, one cannot deny that it is truly by God's grace that we are all witnessing the festive season this year. The festive season is a time to appreciate one another through gifts, gestures, enjoying each other's company, and expressing gratitude for being carried this far in the year. It is during the festive season that we are reminded to celebrate and spread love and peace. With that being said, valued residents, stake-holders, and visitors of the beautiful town of Swakopmund, allow me to spread some love to you all. Dear residents, on 28 January, I mentioned in my announcements my hope for an impactful year as we – the municipality continue to work together to serve our community members and it came into fruition, which would have not been possible without the patience, support, and trust that you
have in the municipality. When this time of year comes around, nostalgia is experienced all throughout. It is inevitable to take a trip down memory lane and recall happy times. I herewith would also like to extend my heartfelt condolences to each home that has lost a loved one. Words cannot describe the amount of devastation this brings about to a household. I share with you Psalms 147:3 that says, “He heals the broken-hearted, and binds up their wounds,” to remember that the almighty God is always our fortress in times of difficulty. This year was quite eventful for our town, from kicking off with the ground-breaking ceremony of the 8 Block development project, Handover of 40/40
social housing, streetlights in Wagdaar, inauguration of Matutura parks, naming of several streets, the first harvest day in the urban agriculture project to receiving the two ambulances from the embassy of Japan through the rotary club to name a few. We can truly wave a flag of pride for all we have achieved. Council will, with no doubt build on the excellence achieved this year in 2022. Furthermore, our beautiful town continues to hear praise about its cleanliness, infrastructures, services, and friendlies from visitors. I could not be prouder in my capacity as mayor. Dear residents thank you, on behalf of council, for making 2021 a treasure. Dear Stakeholders, the Municipality's vision is “to provide and maintain safe, sufficient and affordable services for residents and visitors and promote future development to the benefit of our community”. 2021 showed Council that the challenges to serve our people in this regard are ever increasing and circumstances are not always favourable. Now more than ever the power of stakeholders extending a hand to support and aid our community members together with the council is extremely vital. It is with that, that I want to convey my appreciation to all stakeholders that stood beside Council in keeping to every word in our vision this year. It is indeed true that “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. Dear visitors, welcome to the best town in the country. Swakopmund, 196.3km2 of bliss and paradise. Filled with activities and beautiful sights to see, you are not going to regret your choice in visitation. There is no place like the beautiful town of Swakopmund. The ultramarine water of the Atlantic Ocean makes for the best relaxation and enjoyment. The bright smiles and friendly nature of our residents will make you feel right home. We have rich and historic infrastructure which tells tales of how we came about to where we are. Our law enforcements are aimed and dedicated to ensuring safety and security of all visitors and residents. Finally, we have a variety of local business and activities that provide top notch services that are all set to provide you with the optimum experience. I truly wish you all the best with your stay in our beautiful town. Do not be shy to return. It is our greatest pleasure to have you. Dear residents, stakeholders, and visitors I encourage you all to enjoy the festive season immensely in a cautionary manner. I warn against drinking and driving, promote obedience to rules and regulations set in place to protect you and the life of your neighbour. Lastly, I advocate for sanitizing, social distancing and wearing of facemasks. Please remember that your safety and wellbeing is of utmost importance. As I end, I would like to leave you with this beautiful saying. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart”- Helen Keller. Therefore, beloved residents, stakeholders, and visitors, please accept my heartfelt wishes for you towards this festive season and a prosperous 2022. May God Bless You Merry Christmas! Mayor of Swakopmund - Her Worship, Louisa Kativa

Festive Season Message from Emergency and Law Enforcement Unit Manager, Melvin Cloete “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23 With the festive season upon us, The Municipal Emergency Law Enforcement Division and other emergency services are preparing for one of the busiest times of the year. In the coming weeks the number of vehicles on our roads to the coast will increase significantly as more Namibians will visit our town, Swakopmund and people who travel to be with their families for the Christmas period. Our priority is to ensure our roads are safe for all travelers this Christmas period. The Festive Season period, the loveliest of season is about the closeness of family, the comfort of home and friends. People travel very far distances from all corners of our Country to celebrate with loved ones, renew bonds of love and share in the joy of compassion and generosity. As we share plenty, we should not forget the less fortunate by extending a hand of friendship by giving to those in need. The best Christmas present you can give is for you and your family to arrive safely at your destination. It is against this spiritual background that I call upon all road users to exemplify the spirit of love during this festive period. As we spend time with our immediate and extended families, let us use this quality time to rededicate ourselves to being more appreciative of and loving towards the special people in our lives. Let us think of all road users on the National Road Network of Namibia, and especially in Swakopmund to ensure that we look out for one another, in a loving way, during this period. Many of us will find ourselves on the road, travelling to our respective destinations. This year, let us THINK road safety by taking a united and committed approach towards ensuring all Namibians and visitors from abroad are safe and happy on our roads. Therefore, let us all actively participate in looking out for all stakeholders as law enforcement agencies, drivers, cyclists, passengers, and pedestrians. The Municipal Emergency Law Enforcement Division is committed to public safety and will have additional high visibility patrols on our major arterial roads to improve safety on our roads. Traffic Officers will target high risk driver behaviours that are the main causes of serious crashes; excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol and those committed traffic moving violations. The festive season period is a time of celebration and relaxation that was all too often marred by death or serious injury on our roads. These are not new safety messages, but they work. We all have a responsibility to drive with care and attention for the benefit of all road users. We can have a casualty-free Christmas holidays if we speak up against speed and against drinking and driving. Being amongst family and friends is always a joyful time, a time for laughter, a time to revel and celebrate. However, we should avoid the abuse of alcohol and other intoxicating substances during this time as these activities pose a risk to human life by contributing towards senseless violence, avoidable accidents and unnecessary injuries and deaths. Let us therefore endeavor to celebrate responsibly and ensure that this Christmas will be memorable for everyone. During this time of the year the holidays are filled with happiness and celebrations, BUT it can also be a time of danger and sorrow for road users. It seems everyone is in a hurry trying to wrap up their shopping and enjoy festive celebrations. As you're dashing around town, it is important to keep road safety top of mind as the streets are busier and drivers are distracted by their holiday to do lists. This season calls upon all of us to be alert and circumspect when we use our roads, for road fatalities and injuries are sudden, violent, traumatic with the impact which is long lasting and often permanent. All Festive Seasons period is generally characterized by high traffic volumes on the different routes of Namibia especially to the coastal Towns with fatalities over this period remaining unacceptably high. Apart from the national industry shutdown and school holidays, this period is also a characterized by religious pilgrimages and mass events. The Swakopmund Municipal Emergency & Law
Enforcement Unit together with all our road entities is on high alert to enhance road safety and serve all road users. Alone we might not be strong enough, but we now need to stand together with our stakeholholders to declare that road crashers, fatalities and injuries can be stopped. I appeal and humbly request the Namibian public, especially drivers and visitors, who will soon embark on holiday trips all over the country, to be extra careful on all public roads. Road crashes are amongst the most causes of deaths in our country, particularly during the festive seasons. Therefore, I would like to urge road users to act responsible and obey the rules of the road. Respect traffic regulations, always wear a seatbelt, watch your speed, do not drink and drive, take a rest after a long distance of driving, and generally do everything that we advise to do in order to stay on the safe side of the law s of this country. Our data reveals that it is the young, productive citizens in the 16-35 age groups that are over-represented in roadtraffic fatalities. Yearly road causalities totaled increase, currently more than 500 which is too high and it's too many which can still increase every day. Go on the road with the correct attitude so that you as the driver of a vehicle can make the right decisions within a fraction of seconds. Motorists are urged to be more careful on the roads. Here are a few friendly tips to ensure your Festive season is a safe one: Obey the traffic rules of the road and carry a valid driver's license with you. Plan your route to your holiday destination. Make sure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before departure. Do not overload. Try to avoid driving after dark if possible. Have a good rest before you embark on your journey Don't drink and drive. Try to recognize potentially dangerous drivers on and pedestrians alongside the road and keep well clear of them. Be visible, always drive with your lights on. Headlamps should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within range of the main beam. Always wear your seat belts and see that every occupant is wearing theirs. Drive defensively. Always stay within the speed limit. Only overtake when it is safe to do so. Avoid distractions on the road such as texting, conversations on cellular phones. Be courteous towards fellow road users- keep temper and resist the temptation to retaliate. Speeding, drunken driving and overtaking are the most common causes of road accidents. Please do not double park in the Central Business areas but make use of offside parking areas where it has been paved and watch by car guards. Let us also take time to pay tribute to our Law Enforcement Agencies. Stay on the right side of the white line and if you cannot count those unbroken lines, it means that you are driving too fast. During the Covid 19 years, 2019 and 2020 the Country recorded its lowest number of fatal and serious injury crashes for the past years. It's a trend we all want to continue, and this can be achieved by working with members of the community and other partner agencies. “In the past 2(two) years 12 people have been killed over the Christmas – New Year period and 73 people were seriously injured. That is too many families undergoing a very difficult Christmas. When you are driving give it 100 per cent of your concentration. Stop and rest if you're feeling tired when driving. Plan how you are going to get home before you leave. If you are celebrating, plan to share a taxi home, stay the night or choose a Designated Driver.
We invite you to the coastal town Swakopmund to come and rest and enjoy your time with your families, but please remember to do it within the framework of the law. Our slogan for this Festive Season 2021 is “Apply your good intention to accident prevention. Our standby cellphone numbers are as follows: 081 122 4678/9 or 081 127 4330 if needed in a case of traffic related incidents. I thank you

Avoid the holiday blues in January With the Festive Season around the corner, it is advisable to spend money wisely and plan. Customers should not fall into the trap of spending more money than they can afford during the holidays. This overspending can put them under financial stress during the first couple of months of the New Year. Bank Windhoek's Head of Corporate Affairs, Hayley Allen said that customers should use their funds to cover the beginning of the year's educational expenses: school fees, new uniforms, and stationery. They are also advised to keep in mind that although they are on holiday and relaxing, they cannot let down their guard regarding financial discipline. The following few tips can help customers save some money during the Festive Season: Stick to a budget: It is easy to overspend during the Festive Season due to the hype of activities and joyous mood. Since this is the time for gift-giving and spen-ding time with family and friends, customers should draw up a budget and stick to it for their holiday period. They should not overspend on the budget. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash: It seems easier to spend more when one has a large amount of physical cash at hand. Carrying large amounts of money is also a dangerous habit as one might become a robber's target. Use the money wisely: For those who are fortunate enough to get a 13th cheque, they should first set aside some of it to honour their financial commitments at the beginning of the year. The same goes for those that take out a loan or overdraft to fund their holidays. The holiday might be long gone, but they will still be paying for it for a long time. Do not fall for the discount trap: As much as one would hunt for bargains during the Festive Season, customers should not buy more than they need. Retailers will shout out their discounts, but is it a need? Customers should examine every purchase they make
during the Festive Season. Plan the holiday: Planning for a holiday in advance is always a great idea since it saves money and reduces pressure on personal finances. Next year, customers can perhaps start saving money for their holidays and Christmas gifts six months in advance. Bank Windhoek has several convenient savings products tailored to suit the individual's or a group's saving needs. Check the shopping list: Customers are reminded to check that their gifts' shopping list is not necessarily long and unrealistic. If the list is too long, they can cut it down on the number of people on their current list. They can then bake some cookies to give to the people they snipped from their original gift list. This will ensure they spread the holiday cheer. Be Alert: This season is also synonymous with theft, especially cyber-fraud. Customers must not share their personal bank information with anyone claiming to be calling from the bank. Fraudsters will use this to authenticate transactions on a customer's behalf. Finally, customers should avoid withdrawing large amounts of money and keep their personal belongings safe. The Festive Season is a time to spend with loved ones and not impress others with expensive gifts. Customers should clearly distinguish between their needs and wants and look after them instead of buying what they want. The essential rule is to always stick to the budget and cultivate a culture of saving instead of satisfying immediate wants. The Festive Season can be more exciting and memorable with a clear budget plan.

Visit Seacore Food Market for your fresh and affordable fish Seacore Food Market which opened its doors to the public in August this year is currently one of the most affordable and popular fish shops in Swakopmund and is run by two brothers who have the interest of the public at heart. Seacore Food Market is located on 39 Mandume Ya Ndemufayo Street, Swakopmund. Seacore Food Market is owned by two brothers, Michael and Sven Hopkins. Michael started with the planning, vision and design of Seacore Food Market but quickly realised that it was a business venture that needed a partner. He thought: “who better to work with that has the same outlook in life than my own brother. I have always wanted to work with my younger brother and realised that the time has finally come, definitely a dream come true to work together”. Michael said his motivation to open the fish
shop was that he did not know of a seafood/fish shop in Swakopmund that catered for the lower and higher income market, whilst still creating an enjoyable shopping experience for everyone. The two brothers strive to deliver quality seafood at affordable prices. Michael said the location was well thought out, describing it as the "perfect location", being not too far out of town nor too far from the suburbs. It has a lot of traffic and pedestrians pass by the shop on their way home or in and out of town. The shop is open between 09:00 and 18:00 Mondays to Fridays. Saturdays and on public holidays they open from 09:00 to 13:00 and they will be closed on Christmas Day. Their top selling products are Jacopever, Ribbin and Horse Mackerel, but they have a big variety of products - something for everyone.

Understanding Your Vehicle's Tyres Always inspect your vehicle's tyres before a long trip, but ideally a tyre check should be done monthly. Your vehicle's tyres are the only part of the vehicle that has direct contact with the road. Tyres affects the vehicle's handling, ride, braking and overall safety. For optimal performance and safety, vehicles must have the correct air pressure, thread depth, balance and wheel alignment. Poor tyre maintenance can lead to premature tyre wear, a flat tyre or even a blowout. Worn suspension parts and wheel alignment both play a direct role in tyre wear and performance. Problems to look for during a visual inspection: Over inflation: Too much air pressure causes mostly the tyre's middle section to contact the road. This creates wear primarily in the center of the tread, with less wear at the tyre's edges. Under inflation: Too little air pressure causes mostly the tyre's outer edges to
contact the road. This creates wear primarily on both edges of the tire tread, with less wear in the center. Tread wear on one edge of the tyre: This typically occurs when the wheels are out of alignment. Erratic tread wear: This is often called cupping, and may mean the wheel is out of balance, or that the shock absorbers or other suspension components need to be replaced. Raised portion of the tread or sidewall: May indicate that one of the belts in the tire carcass has separated from those next to it. Tire Problems to Look for while driving Unusual vibration or thumping noise: Vibration or thumping noises can indicate an out-of-balance tyre, one with tread that has a flat spot due to locking the wheels in a panic stop, or a tyre with a separated belt. A pull to one side: While driving at a steady speed, pulling to one side may indicate an underinflated or damaged tire on the side of the car to which the vehicle pulls. If this is not the case, a brake problem or poor wheel alignment may be causing the pull.
