Namibia celebrates 32 years of independence Piquet Jacobs

Namibians will be celebrating the 32nd anniversary of Independence of Namibia in customary fashion for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, with a public gathering to be hosted in Swakopmund at the Vineta Stadium on 21 March. When the clock struck midnight on 20 March 1990, Namibia became an independent, democratic nation and on 21 March 1990, thousands of Namibians watched as former president Sam Nujoma was sworn in as Namibia's

first president by UN Secretary General Perez de Cuellar. ''In the name of our people, I declare that Namibia is forever free, sovereign and independent,'' said Sam Nujoma. Namibia's independence was not just a

victory for this country but a beacon of hope for especially the oppressed. Independence in Namibia has always been celebrated with great enthusiasm, as homage is paid to the sacrifices made and the

struggles experienced for Namibia to help attain its freedom. This day is vital in reminding us about the importance of freedom, as well as the responsibilities that come with that freedom.

Rössing Uranium donates analogue radios to Swakopmund Neighbourhood watch groups Rössing Uranium donated (50) analogue radios to four neighbourhood watch groups from Swakopmund on Friday, 11 March. The donation was a proactive initiative by the mine, in its efforts to assist the teams to enhance communication amongst each other when on duty. Speaking at the occasion, Rössing Uranium's manager Corporate Communication, Daylight Ekandjo said that at Rössing Uranium safety is key to its operation and are committed to supporting community initiatives which are aimed at enhancing and protecting the lives of our people. “Neighbourhood watch teams play a pivotal role in safeguarding communities, as you serve as our eyes and protection both day and night time, and we can just imagine how difficult it is at times to effectively communicate amongst each other when you are performing your duties. We sincerely hope that this donation will help you in executing your job effectively and that it empowers and encourage your members to do even more”, she said. Daylight said: “We have a famous hashtag at Rössing which I want to leave you with today, #Onlytogether. I encourage you as you go out there to safeguard the community, to remember, #Onlytogether can we make Swakopmund and Namibia crime free.” On behalf of the teams, Tamariskia neighbourhood watch team member, John-fefa Ngola thanked Rössing Uranium for the gesture, noting that they will now communicate better as they no longer will need to make “call me requests” to a fellow team member when they have to perform their duties. “Thank you, Rössing Uranium, for looking after us. This donation means a lot to us,” he said.

The Best Nett was won by Poena Johnson on a great 60, Best Gross was won by Kyle Johnson on just as good 69. Runner up Nett was another youngster, Amandio Sardinha on 66. Third place Nett prize went to Ethan Johnson on 69. The new format of prizes allows for a best Stableford was won by Wouter van Wijk with Stableford runner up Jordan Wentzel. Thanks to Thomas Wolff for handling the prize giving and to MULTISAVE for the sponsorship of the medal competitions. There were no two clubs registered and the jackpot was also not won, which is a surprise with those scores. Eleven teams entered for the first leg of the WINDHOEK INTERNATIONAL PAIRS played at the Walvis Bay Golf Club. Results were not available at the time of going to press, but will follow on the social platforms so check there please. This coming weekend is a long weekend and as such there will only be a club competition and the list will be on the platforms as normal, and just for a change all players to play off the red tees. That will sort the boys from the girls. The popular pairs, the CARLOS PAIRS will be on 26 March. The format has been changed from a 27-hole event to 18 holes, and will now be the first six holes foursomes, second six holes better ball and the final six holes will be both scores to count. Indeed, an interesting concept so it is suggested, no recommended, to select your partner correctly, no not correctly, make it wisely. The entry list will also be on the social forums next week. The date for the Tsumeb Golf Day will be on 26 August 2020. Just a reminder that Friday 1 April the LIONS CLUB will be hosting their day/night golf fundraiser. for further info please contact Emile. It is a great experience so please consider entering a team.

Sad day for Namibian Rugby Rudi Bowe Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) president, Corrie Mensah, along with fellow board members elected in 2018, resigned on Tuesday, 15 March. The board's unceremonious decision to part ways with the union was triggered by a submission of a motion of no confidence by a group of dissatisfied clubs to be served at the annual meeting slated for 9 April. The board members decided not to oppose the motion in the interest of the sport and to avoid protracted controversy and division. Corrie Mensah said in a statement that their decision to step down was in the best interest of the local game, as any other move contrary to such a decision would have been catastrophic to the union. Mensah explained, had the clubs succeeded in removing the board through a motion of no confidence at next month's annual general meeting, that such a move would have been catastrophic for the union's stability and for Namibia's 2023 World Cup ambitions. Mensah added, not only will the resultant leadership vacuum at the NRU create a dent in the country's ongoing 2023 World Cup qualification bid, it would also severely affect the country's other national teams, including the women and junior sides, as well as the various development programmes currently being rolled out. Mensah said in his statement, “A vacuum will be created if there is no board in place during this crucial period, and

any decision-making requiring governance intervention would be curtailed. This would impact the logistical and financial preparations required for the final qualification round of the 2023 World Cup although we are of the opinion that it is unlikely for the motion to pass the two-thirds majority vote at the coming annual general meeting, the board has no intentions to embark on a campaign to counter the motion, and would therefore opt to step down for the benefit of the sport, its reputation and the athletes, who will be impacted further should disputes arise from the motion.” He mentioned that the board would like to avoid a similar situation presently being experienced in other sport codes concerning the division in leadership. “Our decision not to contest is also attributed to the damage caused to the board's reputation and trust. As a result, we believe that it would not be conducive for the board to continue under these conditions of mistrust and division as there will be no common ground. This would impact the logistical and financial preparations required for the final World Cup qualification in July 2022, possibly impacting Namibia's ability to qualify for the seventh consecutive time.” The board leaves behind an uncertain future and a hefty N$172 700 bill incurred through a sanction from Rugby Africa for Namibia's failure to pitch at the

2021 Barthes Cup under20 tournament in Nairobi, Kenya. The NRU hooked the junior national side from the roster after “a significant number of players” contracted Covid19. Mensah said they managed to reduce “most of the N$5,5 million debt inherited from their predecessors. The remaining outstanding balance was not stated. “Audits were successfully undertaken over the past four years with at least three consecutive audits being unqualified. The 2021/22 financial audit is in progress and should be finalised soon.” He says the fallout will undo efforts made in reestablishing a good rapport with government, World Rugby, sponsors and other key stakeholders. “It is once again a sad day

for Namibian rugby to be faced by irresponsible actions which will result in significant damages to the sport in general, the good name of the country in the international sporting arena and specifically, and most importantly, to the future progress of our athletes,” Mensah said. The NRU board members were Corrie Mensah (President), Walter Don (Vice President for Management Affairs) and Winnie Christiaans (Legal Affairs), Julia Shipahu (financial auditor), Talitha Jario (women's rugby) and Juanita Ockhuizen (Hardap representative), Elmo Kurz (Erongo Representative and Chairperson for Competitions), James Camm (Central, Chairperson for High Performance Programs), Ernst Groenewald (Referees) and Steve van Wyk (Northern Representative).

The Medixx Captain vs Vice-Captain challenge The Medixx annual Captain vs Vice-Captain challenge proudly sponsored by Medixx Occupational Health Services was held on Saturday, 12 March at the Rossmund Golf Club (RGC) in Swakopmund. The competition led to quite a bit of confusion by the scoreboard, but not too much for the newly crowned Captain: George Murasiki and Vice-Captain: Mark Jacobs to sort out. It was time to ring in the changes with a Betterball Stableford - Scramble Drive – needless to say this very social format brought out a great field of golfers from all levels of the game, including some of our recently handicapped juniors – everyone enjoyed a great day of golf – despite the traditional handicap cut to 75%.

Due to the format, there were no 2-clubs on the day - the funds collected from the players was donated to our Junior Golf Development Program. There were however two Nearest to the Pins on Number 7 and Number 12 won by Bertie Saunderson and Stuart Salt, respectively. The new partnership with Medixx Occupational Health Services will consist of 4 competitions to be held on a quarterly basis.
