State-of-the-Art Mobile ICU for Walvis Bay District Hospital
The United States Department of Defence's Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster and Civic Aid (OHDACA)programmethroughtheUnitedStates(US)embassyinNamibiadonatedaState-ofthe-Art Mobile Intensive Care Unit (ICU) valued at N$20 million to the Ministry of Health and SocialServices(MoHSS)onMondaythisweek.
The 5-bed ICU is designed to provide MoHSS with the ability to not only serve the local populationofWalvisBay,butalsodeploytheICU to other locations in response to a possible medicalcrisis.TheICUisself-sufficientwithdual generator power, water and sewage systems and air conditioning allowing it to operate autonomouslyin the field.It is also stockedwith 600000NamibianDollarsofmedicinetoensure theICUisimmediatelyreadyforoperations.The ExecutiveDirectoroftheMinistryofHealthand Social Services Ben Nangombe said that the donation comes at a crucial time as we enhance capacity at public health facilities nationwide.
“The ICU is in support of governments plans to
construct permanent ICU wards at all 34 District Hospitals in the country” Nangombe said, “followingCovidtherewereabout23ICUbedsin thecountry,withthesedonationstheICUbedswill increased to 93 beds for public health facilities.”
He added that the importance of such facilities in strengthening the nation's healthcare system, particularly in enhancing ICU infrastructure, training healthcare professionals, and supporting medical interns. Alarming Rise in Road Crashes in Namibia

The latest road crash statistics reveal a worrying increase in traffic incidentsacrossNamibia,withtheErongoregionreporting387crashes and 18 fatalities this year. These figures are sourced from weekly collision reports compiled by the Namibian Police Traffic Law EnforcementUnit.
According to a post on West Coast Safety Initiative's social media, the nationwidemotorvehicleaccidentstatisticsfortheperiodfrom1Januaryto 7July2024,showasignificantrisecomparedtothesameperiodlastyear Thisyear,therehavebeen1468accidents,upfrom1375in2023.
Thenumberofinjurieshasalsoincreased,with2700individualsinjuredin 2024comparedto2425lastyear Themostconcerningstatisticistherisein fatalities. So far in 2024, there have been 212 deaths resulting from road accidents,comparedto182fatalitiesduringthesameperiodin2023. IntheErongoregionalone,theimpactofroadcrasheshasbeensevere,with 387reportedincidentsand18deaths.
Suspected Electrocution Incident in Omaruru
OnTuesday this week at approximately 08:10AM, a 22-year-old man wasfounddeadneartheOmaruruRivernexttotherailwaybridge.
Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba, spokespersonfortheErongopolice, reported that the deceased, identified asWilhelm Markus (also known as John Olyn), a resident of Omaruru,wasdiscoveredwithburn wounds and head injuries next to a pole-mounted transformer owned by ErongoRED. According to the preliminary investigation, it is
suspected that Markus climbed the pole with the intent to cut copper wire and was electrocuted as a result.“Nofoulplayissuspectedin thisincident,”statedChiefInspector Shapumba. “However, an autopsy will be conducted to officially determine the cause of death.” The next of kin have been informed of thetragicloss.

Walvis Bay lawyer, Richard Metcalfe has announced on Wednesday, 16 July its withdrawal from representing the Walvis Bay Municipality in legal matters involving RedForceDebtManagementCloseCorporation.
Metcalfe stated, in a memorandum to the WalvisBayMunicipal Council that his firm cannot continue to representaclientwho refuses to comply with the provisions of the Local Authorities Act, the Public Procurement Act 15 of 2015, its own Credit Control Policy, and Water Regulations “We hereby terminate all services to the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay We will file our Notice of Withdrawal as Legal Practitioners of Record in both High Courtcases.” Hesaid the decision was basedonfindingsfroman investigation into the municipality's appointment of RedForce as its exclusive debt collector and subsequentactions. Metcalfe stated that despite the provisions of the Local AuthoritiesAct,CreditCon-
trol Policy, and Water Regulations,theMunicipal Council of Walvis Bay has allowed RedForce Debt Management Close Corporationtoactcontrary to these regulations. This specifically relates to the disconnection and reconnection of water services for residents, which Metcalfe said is done without legal authority “It is also obvious that you have nointerestinthefinalisation of the Report into the Appointment of RedForce Debt Management Close Corporation and/or its operations and/or the residents and ratepayers of Walvis Bay We accordingly cease and desist with such investigation,” he said and went on to say, “Thewriterapologises thatthefactsdiscerned from investigations disclose apparent fraud and theft. This,
however, can not be attributed to RedForce Debt Management Close Corporation, as it is now glaringly obviousthatallactions of RedForce are initiatedandcondonedby the municipal council of Walvis Bay, as constituted by the six councillors, GM: Finance and Manager: Revenue and Credit Control.Noblamecan be attributed to RedForce and suspected corruption, fraud and theft is solely attributable to the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay In such circumstances, an unreserved apology is tendered to RedForce,”hesaid.
ThepleaoftheWalvis Bay Municipal Councilforthetwocasesin which Metcalfe was the legal representative, case number HC-MD-CIV-ACTOTH-2024/01615, is due on 26 July, while case number HCMD-CIV-ACT-OTH2024/01947isdueon 30 July. “Your resolutions have effectively settled such matters to the detriment of your electorate in favour of RedForce Debt Management Close Corporation. It is obvious that you havenointerestinthe finalisation of the report into the appointment of RedForce Debt Management Close Corporation and/or its operations and/or the residents and ratepayersofWalvisBay Weaccordinglycease and desist with such investigation. When contacted for feedback, the Municipality of Walvis Bay declined to comment at this time.

The Brandberg Backyard Ultra hosted by Namibia Ultra Trails and directed by Riana and Nico Scholtz who have organised the Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride since 2015 hasbecomeakeyevent on the running calendars of top long distancerunners.
BBUwilltaketheform of the standard Backyard Ultra, where runners have to completealoopof6706km within every hour for consecutivehours,starting on the top of the hour,foraslongasthey can.Oncearunnercan't completetheloopwithinanhourormissesthe start of the next loop, theirraceends.
The last single runner to complete an entire loop in the given hour wins the race, and the racewillend.Theevent hasnopredetermined
cut-off or end time.As long as there are runners on the course, the racecontinues.
The loop route starts and ends at Brandberg Rest Camp and heads outintotheTsisebConservancy on jeep track, soroughly90%ofeach loopisongravel.There will be a day route during daylight hours, and a night route on a different course for the night loops. A strong headlamp is required withsufficientbatteries forthenightloops.
