At a fundraising gala dinner held on Friday, 12 November by the Board of Trustees of the Narraville Elderly Home, an amount of well over 2 million was raised for the construction of the old age home in Narraville, Walvis Bay. Pioneers in the fishing industry, individuals and captains of industry showed their generosity to create the possibility of better living standards for the elderly. The idea of building an Elderly Home in Narraville originated about 20 years ago when Board Chairman David Williams shared his dream with a few handpick friends in Narraville. The Elderly Home is to give the elderly an opportunity to life happy lives by providing services tailored to their individual needs. The total construction cost of the Narraville Elderly Home is expected to be around N$22 million (Excluding Vat). The home will consist of a main hall, a clinic and 56 single and double residential units with a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and lounge which will be constructed at a cost of N$250 000 per unit. The Narraville Elderly Home will be constructed in two phases. An amount of N$13 million is needed for the construction of the first phase that will consist of 50 units, the main hall and the clinic, on erven 295 and 328 on the corner of Langenhoven Avenue and Attie Carolissen Street. An amount of N$2.2 million is needed for the second phase for the construction of the remaining 8 units, and preparation of erf 297 in Johannsen Street, at the same site where the current facility for the elderly is located. Another N$2 million is needed for land clearing, landscaping and landfill. The boundary walls and gates will be erected at a cost of N$380 000. An additional amount of N$1.5 million is needed for the construction of the main hall while N$1.6 million is needed for the beautification of the landscape and paving of the park. N$1 million is needed for the clinic with equipment,

School News and N$1 million for preliminary and unforeseen costs. Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes said the municipal council supports the initiative. Forbes said,“The current Council is in support of their proposal and I envisioned that the process of being granted in principle approval by Council is sooner rather than later.” “A successful town is judged by the living standard of its elderly population and the quality of education provided to the youth.” The mayor urges everyone to be part of the transformation to accomplish this success during our lifetime. Pledges were received from (with the amount pledged in brackets), ARECHANAB COMMUNITY TRUST - ERONGO MARINE (N$350 000) and (N$100 000) for Rugby Jersey, WESCO ENG+WASTE (N$250 000), Continues on page 2

Remembrance Day commemorated The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (M.O.T.H.) Escarpment Shell hole of Walvis Bay joined the German war veteran's society, Alte Kameraden in Swakopmund on Sunday to commemorate Remembrance Day. A ceremony was held at the war memorial near the holiday town's iconic Mole. Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day among noncommonwealth nations) marks the month, day and the hour the guns fell silent in the First World War. Following Germany's defeat by Allied nations, Armistice was signed on the 11th of November 1918, at eleven o'clock (eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Remembrance Day is commemorated on the Sunday the closest to 11 November each year. Under normal circumstances the M.O.T.H. would have held a ceremony at the war memorial in the J.C. Harries Park. However, due to the death recently of M.O.T.H. Frank Keller, who managed the food and beverage section of the MOTH hall, the facility could not be opened as the business is currently winded up for the purposes of his estate. Under the leadership of the current serving Old Bill, MOTH Herman Saunderson, it was decided to support the Alte Kameraden this year and attend their ceremony.

High vaccination rate could soften the Covid-19 grip during winter 2022 Countries in the southern hemisphere, including Namibia, have their eyes set upon countries in the northern hemisphere where the winter months are fast approaching. Many of these countries experience a spike in Covid-19 cases despite having high vaccination rates. In fact, what the effect of Covid-19 will be on these countries during the northern hemisphere's winter will be indicative of what countries in the southern hemisphere (with a high vaccination rate) can expect during its winter months of 2022. “There are a few very important indicators that will develop from countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, some Eastern European countries, Israel, Russia and even China. Many of these countries have high vaccination rates, yet they

experience a spike in Covid cases”, explained a local medical practitioner to Namib Times this week. This medical practitioner declined to be named and agreed to discuss the matter on account of anonymity. He urged Namibians to vaccinate, as statistics and global research confirmed and continues to confirm that vaccinated people are overwhelmingly less likely to contract serious Covid-19. Vaccinated people are also overwhelmingly run a lesser risk of hospitalisation, a stint in an intensive care unit or

even death. “My opinion, and that is the opinion of the biggest part of the medical fraternity, is that the spike in Covid19 cases in countries with high vaccination rates will actually prove the Covid-19 vaccination's effectiveness beyond doubt”, the medical practitioner explained. Vaccinated people will most likely contract what is known as a breakthrough infection, meaning they will contract Covid-19 but will not require hospitalisation and would make a full recovery. He also expects death rates

to be dramatically less for these countries with high vaccination rates. We as Namibians must now more than ever make the effort to get vaccinated. I want to echo the Health Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula's recent warning that we should not let our guard down amidst Covid-figures dropping to single numbers. Covid-19 remains a real threat and if we as a country can achieve a high vaccination rate the effect of Covid-19 on people's health and lives will reduce significantly in 2022. Namibia's vaccination rate is approximately 22 % of the total population (Namibia's population is currently given as 2 588 856 people). Of this 22 % a total of 286 000 people is fully vaccinated and 348 224 received the first dose.

First passenger liner to call in “year and a half”

As tourism numbers are steadily increasing for Namibia in recent weeks, residents of Walvis Bay can look forward to the first passenger liners in more than one and a half years to call at the port of Walvis Bay. The passenger liner Europa is scheduled to dock on 25 November, followed by six more passenger liners during December this year.

Maersk and Grindrod to partner up A Danish shipping company, A. P. Moller-Maersk, has announced a partnership with a South African shipping service provider, Grindrod Limited, to enhance its capabilities as a global integrator of logistics in South Africa. According to Ships and Ports, this new joint venture will ensure that the logistics activities of Grindrod's intermodal business and the ocean activities of Ocean Africa Container Lines will complement Maersk's current ocean capabilities as well as logistics and services. The company said it would have a 51 per cent share in the proposed joint venture, which would increase its access to landside infrastructure and capabilities as it sought to deliver reliable logistics solutions. Maersk Southern Africa and Islands Area Managing Director, Jonathan Horn, said, “We will have a far greater ability to integrate solutions between ocean and the landside whilst weaving into our organisation an increased capability and experience through colleagues from Grindrod, who has long held a reputation in the landside logistics space.” Maersk said bringing together logistics operations skills and capabilities under the new proposed joint venture would create a base for growth and enable Maersk to excel in the logistics and services products execution through better-serving customers via intermodal solutions in trucking, rail, depots, warehousing, and ocean feedering. According to the company, the partnership is still subject to regulatory approvals. It said the new organisation would be formed and become operational within a few weeks after approval has been granted”. This report is quoted from the online maritime news site, PUNCH.

FNB advises retailers on how to prevent shopping fraud this Black Friday Namibia has witnessed an upsurge in online shopping opportunities over the past two years as numerous retailers now offer this option, while a number of new online shopping portals have opened for business, particularly on social media. This popular way of shopping allows consumers and businesses to maximise shopping

sprees such as Black Friday, it also requires enhanced measures to minimise the risk of

fraud. Rivan Meyer, Head of FNB Digital Channels, says: "Irrespective of

whether a business is large or small, it must have measures to detect and prevent fraud for

point of sale (card present) and online shopping (card not present) payments. During Black Friday, retailers that have specials are likely to process more transactions than usual. Unfortunately, the risk of in-store and online shopping fraud is also enhanced.” Meyer advises businesses and retailers to pay careful attention to warning signs of potential fraud, such as: Failure to verify the Card Ve r i f i c a t i o n Va l u e (CVV): To minimise the risk of fraud, retailers are encouraged to request a CVV number for online shopping transactions. The CVV number verifies that the person placing the order has their physical or virtual card in their possession. A failure by an online shopper to verify the 3digit CVV number on their physical or virtual card is a red flag. Several unsuccessful attempts to transact: When a fraudster is using a stolen card, it is common for the card to decline several times. This could be due to an incorrect address, expiration date, or mismatched CVV. One or two declines may be common, but multiple declines are suspicious. Multiple quantities of the

same item: Fraudulent orders will often be made with the intention of reselling or ordering different items from the same category. To protect your business, keep track of ordering trends and be aware of high-value purchases. Especially when the items are in high demand. FNB Merchant Services also encourages retailers to consider the following safety measures for instore transactions: Ensure that the supervisor PIN is adequately protected: It's important to choose a strong supervisor PIN to avoid exposing the business to undue risk. Furthermore, a supervisor's PIN must never be shared or written down, and it needs to be changed regularly. Conduct a daily tally of Speed point devices on hand: Take note of each Speed point device's serial number to ensure that only authorised devices are at the store. Be wary of skimming or

the tampering of Speed point devices. Verify the details on card present transactions: Always verify the card by comparing the last four (4) digits of the card number with the first four (4) digits on the signature pad on the reverse of the card. Take note of embossed card numbers that are unusual or of an uneven type or style and be vigilant when a cardholder presents multiple cards that result in successive declines. "While seasonal shopping sprees such as Black Friday and the Festive Season are key to profitability, especially for retailers, businesses must be on high alert to avoid incurring losses due to fraud. It is important to remember that fraud-sters are always looking for loopholes, so businesses must be multiple steps ahead with adequate safety measures," concludes Meyer.

your support,” he said. When asked what the possibility is to record some episode of “Koortjies with Jonathan Rubain” in Namibia, Rubain said the following “the possibility is there, with all the support Namibians provide for all the KYKNET programs like Suidoosters, Binnelanders, Klop, Getroud met Rugby, Arendsvlei and many more.” He however said that it will obviously cost a few Namibian dollars, but if there are a few Namibian businesses that would like to

come on board and help he thinks it will then be possible. At the schools he visited, he told the learners that in order to be successful, they must learn hard and

listen to their teachers and parents and that a person can become anything theywant. Organiser, Danny Morkel said Rubain will be back in Namibia early December

2021 for country wide concerts and to help Namibian musicians. “Thank you so much for everything. I love you so much,” Rubain concluded.

FEI Jumping World Challenge The Namibian Equestrian Federation held the first and second legs of the 2nd KATE ALISON on SEEIS SHELTON (1 penalty) Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) Jumping World Challenge from 5 to 7 CATEGORY B 1.10m – 1.20m Competition 1 November 2021 at the Reiterverein Swakopmund. A record number of Category A entries, had six athletes competing in the highest level this year with a further seven entries competed in Category B and ten in Category C. The aim of the Jumping World Challenge is to give riders the opportunity to compete internationally without having to leave their own country, reason being the challenges and costly expenses of travelling a rider and his/her horse across the globe. Twenty riders and horses entered from across Namibia, with only the top two from each geographical zone qualifying for the FEI Jumping World Challenge finals. The top two competitions out of the three competition “Legs” count towards this. This competition is currently divided into 10 geographical zones and offers three height categories in one age group. Athletes may participate from the age of 14 in the following categories: CATEGORY A 1.20m – 1.30m CATEGORY B 1.10m – 1.20m CATEGORY C 1.00m – 1.10m The jumping courses are the same in all 10 zones, being designed by an appointed

international course designer, and built in every country in the same sized arena of 65m x 45m. The technical aspects of the courses are in correlation with the Levels 1 & 2 of the FEI Coach Education System, which is implemented in the same National Federations that participate in the FEI Jumping World Challenge. Judges, Christiane Hass and Matthias Braune were extremely impressed with the high standard of riding over the weekend and everyone is now looking forward to the 3rd and final leg that will be from 3 to 5 December 2021 in Swakopmund, and incorporates the qualification for the Youth Equestrian Games 2022, in Aachen, Germany. Rough seas foil the brave “Amphibian Namibian” Rudi Bowe The former Namibian Paralympics swimmer Gideon 'The Amphibian Namibian' Nasilowski in the longest and most difficult challenge he has ever faced, braved the icy weather and water in Cape Town as part of his ongoing awareness campaign for disability not only in Namibia, but internationally. After 16-month of perpetration, The Amphibian Namibian on Monday, 15 November 2021 set course to swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand in South Africa. The Namibian Amphibian is an assistant manager at Food Lover’s Market in Walvis Bay. Nasilowski was born with a rare disorder called arthrogryposis, a congenital multi complex that causes joints to curve and contract therefore causing severe constraints on flexibility and movement of arms and legs. Gideon Nasilowski aka the Amphibian Namibia said, “Although I am disabled, I don't stand back for anything or anyone.” Managing Director of Connecting People to People, Buttons Heyns said, unfortunately, the weather did not play along with us today. The wind and swell were just too strong and Gideon was not moving forward for more than 40 minutes. A call was made to end the swim at plus/minus 3km from Big Bay, as Gideon and Buff were just moving more and more north and not forward. In total, Gideon swam 9,7 km in 5 hours, 21 minutes and 56 seconds, still an amazing effort and achievement. This is not the end; we shall try again and keep an eye on The Amphibian Namibian in future.” The Amphibian Namibian and his team thanked every person and company that have made a contribution in the past 16 months towards this Robben Island Challenge and what Gideon aims to achieve. “Without you we would not have

been able to be where we are today.” - Photos contributed
