Christmas Greetings from the South Pole Save Eileen van der Schyff
The Crew of the Marine Fishing Vessel (MFV) Helena Ndume, owned by Honeydew Investments, wishes Namibians a merry Christmas all the way from Antarctica. The management of Honeyguide Investments (PTY) LTD confirmed to the newspaper the crew of the vessel is doing well and sending a special Christmas greeting to all Namibians. “The vessel and crew are doing well. They are currently positioned at the heart of Antarctica. The landscape is breathtaking, surroun-

Many families struggle to find a decent job and in order to put bread on the table they have opted to sell handmade products to tourists. However, these street vendors face a daily challenge. According to them, while walking around town trying to sell their products, they are continuously harassed by security guards who would chase them away. One such street vendor, Avelino Domingos, approached the Namib Times in frustration and expressed his anger with a certain security company which operates in the Central Business District (CBD). He also expressed his frustration with Swakopmund Municipality officials for chasing him away while he was trying to sell his products. Domingos explained, “on 12 December, security guards from a certain security company met me in town while I am busy selling my products, they
took me to their office and told me that I am not supposed to sell my products here in town. I said it is okay then I will go sell my things at the beach.” The following day, on 13 December, according to Domingos, he was at the beach doing business as usual when he again encountered security officers from the same company, who reminded him of the conversation they had the previous day - that he is not allowed to sell his products in town. Upon hearing this, Domingos informed Continues on page 2

before embarking on a three-month fishing expedition in the South Pole. The vessel is expected to return to Walvis Bay in May next year, where it will stay for four months before its next fishing trip to Antarctica as per De Castro's statement that also encourages Namibian fishing companies to consider venturing into international waters.
Save the Dorob Rudi Bowe
Save the Dorob is a community project initiated by local residents, business professionals and holidaymakers to renovate the area north of Henties Bay. Roads to the different fishing spots must be maintained, including Messum Crater and Dead Sea, also motorists should only use the official road and surrounding areas so that these areas are not destroyed by vehicles going off-road. The Dorob National Park in central Namibia, is actually more of a protected reserve than for tourism purposes that highlights a strong focus on conservation measures. It is a key piece of the puzzle along Namibia's coast that allows for the entire 1 570km coastline of the country to be protected. Collectively, this area is known as the Namib Skeleton Coast National Park, and it conso-lidates three greater national parks: Skeleton Coast, Namib-Naukluft and Sperrgebiet, In October this year at the first meeting the following persons were elected to lead the project 'Save the Dorob' Daleen Aggenbach from Spar Henties Bay (Chairperson), Simon Anderson from NSAA (Secretary), Willem de Wet from Desert Air, Neal van den Berg from Kanal 7, Clarinda from Rent a
Drum, Nico Niemand from Erongo Red, S Walker from Coca-Cola, Karel Aggenbach from Henties-baai Tourism, Naude van der Merwe resident of Henties Bay. Mahne Kruger and Desmon Kam-batnamasa from the Henties Bay Municipality. At this point, all the roads including the "Dead Sea" and the road through the Messum Crater have already been scraped. Some roads are not completely smooth, but at least drivable. The fishing signs have also been replaced as far as Horning Bay. The signs are put up to be seen as you drive north from Henties Bay. Due to cost, only one side of the sign is in print. Some of the points that still needs to be done are the poles in front of the beach indicate which exits to scraped roads are, and what has fallen over that must be picked up again. The Welwitschia plants in Messum Crater must be protected by packing stones so that the vehicles do not touch them. Cleaning sessions must be

them that the area he was selling from was not the CBD, whereto the security officers responded by spraying him [Domingos] with pepper spray. “They took me to their office again like the previous day and told me that they don't want to see me in Swakopmund. They said I must go back to Walvis Bay. I have been selling my products in all towns of Namibia since 1996. I don't know why the Swakopmund Municipality and this security company don't want me to sell here in Swakop. I am not working and have a family and we only survive from this business.” Domingos feels that if the Swakopmund Municipality doesn't want him to
sell his products, the municipality must give him a job so that he can earn an income to support his family. According to the Swakopmund Municipality's Public Relations Officer, Linda Mupupa, street vendors fall under the Economic Development Department which are guided by the Youth Development Officer. Mupupa said, “street vendors and hawkers are not permitted to sell within the Central Business District; therefore we have created the Kavita Park which is an area designated for all craftsmen and women to sell their craft. Other areas are located at the SME Parks in different locations in Swakopmund.”

Early in the new year, attention will be given to the roads again and they will also be watered, which will help a lot to bring them up to standard. There are also smaller signs, (1 200 x 30) made from all the fishing spots that can be bought as a souvenir at Spar Hentiesbaai at N$700 per sign. To be able to do all these projects, we need funds

and sponsors. Fortunately, Namibians and all those who love the desert and Henties Bay understand the importance of such a project. Some funds and sponsors, but not enough to cover everything were received. Some of the contributions are large packages for accommodation, hunting and tickets have been made for them which will be sold at Spar Hentiesbaai at N$100 a ticket. Feel free to check out Henties Bay Tourism's website for the prizes that can be won. These are incredible prizes. The projects are also intended to continue continuously over the years. This will cause us to need more funds and sponsors. Other projects have also been mentioned that have not yet received attention and for which funds and sponsors are also needed. In order to make the project successful, anyone can make a contribution to Henties Bay Tourism Association's Bank Windhoek account SAV 2000218933 branch code 481772 or can provide a sponsor for anything that affects the project.

Erongo Triumph: Bannerman Secures Mining License for Etango Advancement Eileen van der Schyff
Australian and Namibian-listed uranium development company, Bannerman Energy Ltd was granted a Mining Licence (ML) for its flagship Etango Uranium Project by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in Namibia. This announcement, coupled with the initiation of early works contracts, marks a pivotal moment for the company.
Public Notice Namib Times
Please note that our last edition for the year appeared today, Wednesday, 20 December and our first edition for 2024 will appear on Tuesday, 9 January 2024. The Namib Times offices will also close today, Wednesday, 20 December and will re-open on Thursday, 4 January 2024. Enjoy responsibly and be safe.
This was revealed in a press release authorised on behalf of Bannerman Energy Board by Brandon Munro, Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Bannerman wasted no time in awarding two crucial contracts, totalling approximately N$36 million, to a local Namibian contractor. These contracts focus on the construction of a temporary water supply and the site access road, crucial components for the impending full-scale construction works. These endeavours are funded from the company's existing cash holding of A$37.3 million. Brandon Munro, Bannerman's Managing Director, and CEO, expressed his gratitude, stating, “the grant of the Etango Mining Licence represents a milestone event for Bannerman and our valued stakeholders." He emphasised the
company's enduring commitment to Etango since its initial investment in 2006. Gavin Chamberlain, Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the significance of the local engagement, stating, "I am delighted that we have awarded the first contracts on Etango to a Namibian construction services business," underlining the company's commitment to contributing to the Namibian economy. The Etango Uranium Project, located in Namibia's Erongo Region, has undergone extensive exploration and feasibility studies over the past 15 years. The recent completion of the Definitive Feasibility Study in December 2022 confirmed the technical and economic viability of conventional open-pit mining and heap leach processing. Banner-
man's adherence to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards was acknowledged with the 2023 African Mining Indaba's ESG Award for Community Engagement. With the mining licence in hand, Bannerman progresses towards a targeted Final Investment Decision, aligned with the positive trend in uranium market fundamentals. Namibia's history of uranium production, coupled with its political stability and supportive infrastructure, positions it as an ideal jurisdiction for Bannerman's strategic endeavours. The commencement of site establishment in January and early works construction over the next four to six months underscores Bannerman's commiment to achieving key milestones on schedule.

'n Brief aan my Dogter… Leandrea Mouers
Bid. Raadpleeg Hom eerste. Abba kan alles laat meewerk. Jy is nie alleen nie, jy is 'n geliefde, jy is belangrik, jy is uniek! Spreek lewe!” Die boek is beskikbaar by Be Cute Wellness Aesthetics Walvisbaai (+264 812 954 702) sowel as by Be Cute Windhoek, Appelliefie Vellies, Cornerstone in Walvisbaai, en daar is 'n afhaalpunt in Swakopmund by Food Lovers Market vir voorL i n d i v a n L o g g e n b e r g , m e t h a a r b o e k , afbetaalde bestellings. Eight learners from the Namib Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Foundation (NamSTEM) attended the iMBEWU South African Youth Engineering and Science Symposium (SAYESS) in Krugersdorp, South Africa from 7 – 9 December. The three-day competition was held at the Misty Hills Country Hotel, Conference Center and Spa. According to Mrs Anastacia Herbert, the founder of NamSTEM, the learners were recruited from the Erongo and Khomas region. “We hope to expand to the rest of the country in future. Our biggest challenge was acquiring sponsorships to attend the competition and many learners had to stay because of that. Namops Logistics was the only sponsor for this trip. All of the learners received medals for their projects and Lilibeth Baziun received the award for best Namibian project and received a prize of R500.” The Namibians competed against learners from South Africa and Zambia. The results are as follow: Dominique Peterson, received bronze for her project Fermentation: Humankind's Oldest Biotechnological Tool. She made kimchi from scratch (making it a bit more authentic to Namibia because of what we have available here) and investigated the changes in pH and glucose levels as the kimchi ferments over 21 days and more. Dudley Sawab, received silver for her project, PVC Watering Machine. Dudley explained that the idea came from trying to find easy ways of gardening that will conserve water and usage of minimum water. “With this in mind I found PVC pipes at the farm underutilized and knowing plastic is not biodegradable and used these pipes while intending to re-use them for gardening, and to build a waterfall. I used the waterfall to see how it could help plants grow faster.” Jadan van Rooyen received bronze for his subject causes the most anxiety? The aim was to find out which school subject causes the most anxiety for senior primary learners. Jesse Herero, received bronze for Robots Programming, and he created and programmed his own robot. Jessica Stein, received bronze, for her project; Hidden: The Dangers of Cleaning. She used experiments to prove or disprove that you can accidentally produce toxic gases when mixing household cleaning products. Lilibeth Bazuin, received silver, for her project Chemification Spherification. Spherification is a technique used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries to create unique, visually striking, and functional products. In this study, the aim was to investigate the impact of spherification on the pH, taste, and texture of different food liquids. She created her own edible spheres (boba) with different food liquids. Ndahambelela Mutumbulwa, received bronze for the project of
investigating the growth of oyster mushrooms. The experiment involved setting up controlled conditions for mushroom cultivation using the substrates. Each substrate was replicated multiple times to ensure reliable results. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light exposure, and ventilation were kept consistent across all conditions. Parameters such as mushroom growth rate, yield, and other relevant observations were measured and recorded throughout the project. Theodor Benyameni, also received bronze for the project, the water purifier. The aim of the study was to design and evaluate a water purifier capable of removing pollutants and toxins from contaminated water sources. The purifier consists of a multistage filtration process using a combination of materials including locally available materials. Aside from participating in the competition, the learners had the opportunity to do some sight-seeing as well. “On the first day we visited Maropeng: Cradle of Humankind. We saw fossils, learned about how humankind was born, viewed stone tools that are up to one million years old, and much more. We walked through some exhibitions of the oldest human fossils and went on a boat ride through the exhibition of the four elements – water, fire, earth and air.” “On the second day, we visited Croc City: Crocodile and Reptile Park. We got the chance to learn more about crocodiles and how they lay eggs and are born, and we also learned about other reptiles such as snakes and tortoises. After that, we went to a live show about snakes and crocodiles and the children got a chance to hold the baby crocodiles and put the snakes on them.” Lillibeth Bazuin, who is a grade 6 learner said that it was an exhilarating and fun experience. “I enjoyed participating and socialising with like-minded teens. I hope we can all do this again soon! Domonique Peterson, a grade 7 learners added that he enjoyed the excurciuons and meetings other like-minded learners. “I'm also happy that I could do this on an international level and would like to do this again sometime.” Herbert added that it is important for children to attend such competitions, as it offers them exposure to a world of possibilities. “They get to experience different activities and also get to interact and make friends with like – minded individuals who care just as much about STEM. They also get the opportunity to compete in more international competitions and more opportunities for their future studies. I hope that more schools will become involved in science fairs next year and if they need any guidelines or information on how to start or get involved they can contact me via email on namstem19@gmail.com.”

The Pupkewitz Jetty Mile
The Pupkewitz Jetty Mile an annual holiday event that attracts more than 250 swimmers is a nautical mile or approximately 1 850 metres an ocean swimming event created out of the legacy of the late Harold Pupkewitz, an avid swimmer himself. Harold Pupkewitz supported the sport over many years culminating in the popular annual Pupkewitz Jetty Mile that will be held on 27 December at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund. The late Harold Pupkewitz, an avid swimmer himself, supported the sport over many years culminating in the popular annual Jetty Mile becoming the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile. Here Pupkewitz sets off the swimming hopefuls at last year's event.
The Jetty Mile starts at Tiger Reef with swimmers proceeding past the Jetty and towards the main beach at the Mole. The Jetty Mile forms part of the Pupkewitz Foundation's grant funding focus areas, and the Foundation believes that sport can be used as a tool to demonstrate and encourage community involve-ment, commitment, volunteerism, leadership, fair play, respect, inclusion, and qualities based on equity and equality that will help children and youth grow into community leaders and community volunteers, therefore using sport intentionally to instill character in individuals and build strong communities. One of the platforms that support this focus area is the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile event, started by the Pupkewitz family in 2007 and continued by the Pupkewitz Foundation on a yearly basis. Competitors need to assess for themselves whether they are capable of taking part on the day. Competitors also need to be selfsufficient in the water, as sea rescue is limited. A swimmer cannot take part in both the Jetty Mile and Sprint. The minimum age for the full event (Jetty Mile) is 13.
