Mayor meets stakeholders to discuss land delivery solutions

Wasserfall case to High Court

Rudi Bowe Walvis Bay Mayor, His Worship, Councilor Trevino Forbes, this week met with key stakeholders from various industries to discuss affordable land delivery solutions. The objective of the meeting was to get input and encourage stakeholders to actively participate in land delivery process particularly for their employees. In an interview with the Namib Times recently, Forbes emphasized that the process of land delivery is not progressing at the desired pace, mainly due to financial challenges. Council has injected funds to the tune of N$7 million in farm 37, however this is just a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed to realize the full vision. In order to achieve to full potential of Farm 37 Council needs the co-operation from key stakeholders including

Walvis Bay Mayor His Worship Councilor Trevino Forbes central government. “I believe having this stakeholder engagement is a crucial step in realizing the full potential of Farm 37, and Council can unfortunately not achieve this singlehandedly”. He said. According to Forbes, the meeting was well attended and well received by the stakeholders, however, he mentioned that these engagements is one of the efforts

Council is embarking on to meet the needs of the residents. “It is important that stakeholders get involved as many of them employ a large percentage of residents in Walvis Bay, some of whom live in shacks, thus it's important for them to prioritise the housing needs of their employees”. He emphasised that Farm 37 is not only an informal settlement but a township that will consist of general residential erven for businesses as well as residential erven for middle and low income. Forbes further called on investors and stakeholders to get in touch with the mayor's office for their input. The last Council meeting was marked by chaos with protestors who were interrupting the proceedings of the meeting. Protesters demanded land and some claimed that Walvis Bay is being run like a

Cuca shop. The protesters were invited to the mayor's office and they came on Monday, 16 May 2022. The group expressed their dissatisfaction with the possibility of Council no longer providing them with potable water. Council has been providing the residents with water due to the impact of Covid-19. The protestors claimed that they were politically instigated to protest at the Council meeting. During the meeting with the protesters, the mayor clarified the misunderstanding on water provision and called on the group to establish a committee to represent them and present their concerns to his office in future.“Protesting and chaos at Council meetings is not a solution since Council has an opendoor policy to any group or resident/s” said Forbes.

Orano Mining Namibia announces bursary scheme for 2023

Last week, Orano Mining Namibia announced that it will soon introduce a bursary scheme that will provide funding and support to the first group of selected, excellence-driven students in the desalination and water management-related fields. The scheme will become active in 2023. Orano Mining Namibia, as the owner of the Erongo Desalination Plant (EDP) and a committed corporate citizen of Namibia, recognizes that Desalination can continue to unlock Namibia's economic potential. The company also recognizes that development in this area needs the best talent to unlock growth opportunities. It is therefore with great pleasure that the company announces the Orano Mining Namibia Bursary Scheme. Orano Mining Namibia's Managing Director, Tommie Gouws said: “We are very proud of our legacy with the establishment of Namibia's first-ever desalination plant 12 years ago. Today, the Erongo Desalination Plant continues to provide much-needed potable water to the Erongo Region, enabling development

and creating employment directly and indirectly.” Gouws further mentioned, “In addition, the Namibian government has also recently announced its intention to establish a second desalination plant, which will lead to further economic opportunities for the country and the region. It is therefore imperative that we provide opportunities for Namibian youth to obtain the skills required for our future as a nation, which is why we decided to implement this scheme now. Beyond our plant requirements, we know that Namibia will benefit greatly from skills development with a future vision in this area.” The bursaries will be awarded for undergraduate study at Namibian institutions and will be advertised during the third quarter of 2022. Education and skills development are priority community investment areas for Orano Mining in Namibia and elsewhere. In addition to the bursary scheme, Orano Mining Namibia supports skills development through partnerships with local higher education institutions, as well as support to schools.

A Walvis Bay resident contacted the Namib Times after she came across a slaughtered donkey while on her morning jog in the desert just outside Meersig, Walvis Bay on Wednesday this week. The carcass was left behind with its intestines taken out and next to it. It had its ears and bottom parts of its legs removed. These body parts were missing. Police arrived at the scene and contacted the Chief of stock theft, Chief Inspector Urib. Inspector Urib told the newspaper at the scene he has been hot on the heels of the perpetrators since the day before, as another three donkeys were found slaughtered in the area. “The matter is under investigation,” said Inspector Urib. In an earlier incident this month, a pet sheep that belongs to the horse stables at Walvis Bay was found slaughtered at the back of the stables. In a telephonic interview, Ute Gebhardt told the Namib Times the sheep has been a pet at the stables for the past 12 years and was dearly loved. “This is costing us a lot now, because we have to secure the stables by putting up extra gates and fences. We also now have security at the stables which is adding to our expenses.”

The Annual Emergency Simulation / Drill was organised by the Operational Supervisor of Ndume Trading CC, Victoria Shikwambi with the help of the Managing Director, Paulus Ndume. The aim of the fire drill was to put to practice how a building would be evacuated and how the injured will be rescued in the event of fire. “Emergency fire drills are usually done in the desert just outside Walvis Bay, but this year, we are raising awareness of what to do in the case of a fire at the workplace, and test the response time of the different governmental emergency services. We are pleased with their response times,” Ndume said. “We chose the Police station as the location, because it's one of the most dangerous depots that we deliver diesel to, as their terminals are

under ground and if it happens that a fire breaks out in the police station a lot of lives will be lost.” The responding emergency services included an ambulance and crew of the St Gabriel Community Ambulance Trust, four nurses of the Alba Chipamba Training Centre, the fire fighting crew of the Walvis Bay Fire Brigade and police officers.

Promiseland thanks soup kitchen volunteers Promiseland thanked their soup kitchen volunteers for their dedication to making a difference in others' lives. Although volunteering focuses on helping others, there are many personal benefits that children can gain by getting involved. Promiseland started a volunteer project that gives some of their children the opportunity to get involved in the soup kitchen and reward them with a gift to say thank you for their contribution and commitment (commitment working with volunteers). The motivation behind the project is to give the volunteers the opportunity to take responsibility and thus get a sense of their "first work" experience. Volunteering focus is on helping others and making a positive impact on the community and it fosters positive lives and social skills, creates responsibility, time management, leadership qualities, confidence, empathy, and gives the individual the opportunity to be valued for the difference they make in others' lives. Most of our volunteers themselves have been dependent on the soup kitchen's food scheme at some point in their lives and this inspires them to give back to the organization that has also made a positive impact in their lives. Their tasks include getting everyone together in order, sanitizing and maintaining social distancing. They serve all the guests, assist the youngsters and help with cleaning up. Some volunteers are part of the scheme from an early age and re-register every year which is a confession for us that it makes a positive impact on our young people. The Feeding Project was started in October 2007 after the Trust took over from the previous charity operations of another nonprofitable organisation on a small erf in Tutaleni. The Feeding Project at Promiseland currently provides daily home cooked meals in two sittings for roughly 250 - 300 vulnerable children. The first meal is prepared and served to preprimary children during their morning activities at the Promiseland Center and the second for school-going children in the afternoons. The Trust also assists a local community project with the logistics to feed approximately 2500 needy children at 7 schools daily during the school terms in Walvis Bay. Initially food was prepared and served from a steel container, without the luxury of electricity or running water. There were no ablution facilities or an under-roof structure where children could eat their meals. The Trust then purchased a house and slowly started renovating

the house. Through the support and sponsorships of the local businesses and the community existing structures were transformed to be able to house a well-equipped mess-hall with kitchen facilities where the children can sit and eat in a clean and safe environment. A large number of children in the Tutaleni neighbourhood have come to depend on the Promiseland. Promiseland Kitchen simmers the pots daily and delivers a cooked meal to an average of 250 vulnerable children from our community every day the schools are open. After school, the children sit ten to twelve per table under the supervision of Promiseland staff. Promiseland is a Christian-based, sustainable, charity organisation with roots in the community of Walvis Bay. We offer a child-friendly and safe environment where we provide daily meals, basic education, and day care services to the destitute and vulnerable children of the community. Driven by our core principle to change people's attitudes towards helping themselves, we pursue our vision with passion, investing in the future of these children through nourishment, empowerment and development. “Through our various community upliftment projects, we are empowering vulnerable children to reach their full potential. You can be a force for change too.” Promiseland is a non-profit organization and is 100% dependent on donations, the public and businesses are more than welcome to get involved, financially or on another level

Psalm 23:1- 6 Die Here is my herder niks sal my ontbreek nie. Hy laat my neerlê in groen weivelde na waters waar rus is lei Hy my heen, verkwik my siel, Hy lei my in die spore van geregtigheid, om Sy naam ontwil. Al gaan ek ook in `n dal van doodskaduwee, ek sal geen onheil vrees nie, want U is met my, die stok en U staf die vertroos my. U berei die tafel voor my aangesig teenoor my teenstanders, U maak my hoof vet my olie, my beker loop oor. Net goedheid en guns sal my volg al die dae van my lewe en ek sal in die huis van die Here bly in lengte van dae.
